IMPACT REPORT · RANCHO FAMILY YMCA
THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT This has been the Rancho Family YMCA’s most successful year since we opened our doors in 1989. We first began to offer adventure guide programs and backyard swim programs and now we are a full service YMCA with three sites offering swim, sports, gymnastics, dance, wellness, group exercise, active adult gatherings, and much more! It’s so fitting that this year also marked our 30th year serving the community - we are so humbled to be given this privilege and look forward to thirty more years. This year we opened a weekly Certified Farmers Market which provides fresh, locally sourced healthy food options for the community. Open every Saturday in the YMCA Parking Lot, this community market has had over 400 visitors each week since April. We thank the PQ Town Council and City of San Diego for their important role in making this vision a reality for the PQ Community. I am proud to say that our Annual Campaign was a huge success this past year, raising over $200,000 for members of our community who need it most. With your financial support we were able to provide scholarships to 507 individuals this year – These funds reduced costs for military families, teen programs and to support children with developmental disabilities be successful in programs like camp. We cannot thank you enough!

This campaign will bring additional program space and needed updates to both sites. Stay tuned for more news on the projects. We continue to make the Rancho Family YMCA a home for so many families and individuals in this community. We thank you for your support and we look forward to the exciting new year ahead of us. We hope to see all of you at the Y!

SUMMER CAMP
Words cannot express our gratitude for the opportunity you provided to my ten INCLUSION WEEKS year old son, Paul, who has autism. Because of your giving hearts, Paul was able to at no extra cost attend the YMCA Day Camp during the summer of 2015. Paul is the older brother for children with to Brooke, an eight year old girl. Since Brooke was in pre-school, Paul has been riding special needs. along, in the car, as we go to drop Brooke off and pick Brooke up again from day camp. For years, he has been asking to attend summer camp, but I have never been aware of a program who could handle Paul’s demanding behaviors. I learned of the Y Camp during the spring of 2015. Finally, there was a program designed to accommodate Paul’s needs! I talked to him all about what to expect, even taking him to the field in advance so that he FAMILIES RECEIVING would be familiar with his surroundings. He assured me he was ready to be a camper.

The first day arrived and he had a great day. He came home talking about his day. His dad and I were very optimistic! The second day arrived and Paul fell apart at camp. The staff worried that he may be too disruptive, but they assured us they were willing to try to give him the best camp experience possible. By the end of the week, Paul fell into a routine, was excited about camp, and asking to go back to camp each evening. He attended several different weeks throughout the summer as his schedule permitted. With each week, he grew to love camp more and more. He even made a few friends which is a completely new concept to Paul! We even took him to the camp barbecue, one Friday night. He jumped out of the car as soon as we parked (not his usual tentative self) and, proudly, showed us all of his favorite activities. The camp staff all greeted him, warmly, by name. When camp ended, he was very disappointed. Several months have passed and he still points and asks us to exit the freeway as we pass the camp exit. It was such an exciting summer for Paul. As a parent, it was extremely meaningful to me to be able to offer the camp experience to my son so that he was able to enjoy the same summer fun as his typical peers. It still makes me tear up just thinking of his experience. Our family was grateful for the Y Camp. We enjoyed attending camp through Paul’s eyes and the stories he shared in the evenings. Thank you from the very bottoms of our hearts for a wonderful summer. We cannot wait for him to return.
