The Chronograph Diaries July 2014

LOUIS MOINET The inventor of the chronograph изобретатель хронографа The recent discovery of a hitherto unknown timepiece is rewriting the history of watch development. It turned out to be the ﬁrst ever chronograph, although its maker, Louis Moinet, called it a “compteur de tierces.” According to hallmarks on the dust cover, the chronograph was started in 1815 and completed the following year. This remarkable instrument of an entirely original design is evidently the work of a genius well ahead of his time. It measures events to the sixtieth of a second (known in those days as a “third” or tierce in French), indicated by a central hand. The elapsed seconds and minutes are recorded on separate subdials, and the hours on a 24-hour dial. The stop, start and reset functions for the central hand are controlled by two buttons which qualiﬁes it as a chronograph in the modern sense, although the term was coined much later. The return-to-zero function was revolutionary for the time. Until today, this invention had been thought to date from Adolphe Nicole’s patent of 1862.

The Ateliers Louis Moinet are at Saint-Blaise near Neuchâtel in the heart of Switzerland’s watchmaking area. This independent company was established about 15 years ago by JeanMarie Schaller with the aim of producing watches in the spirit of Louis Moinet: a blend of art and technology.

Although Louis Moinet was an eminent horologist of the 19th century, his work has been largely forgotten. However, recent research has brought to light some of the masterpieces of the past, which are kept in the museum section at SaintBlaise. These treasures include decorative clocks, complicated pocket-watches, a timer and original documents of the period as well as different editions of Moinet’s 1848 Traité d’Horlogerie.

Stardance, the watch from the stars Stardance is an extraordinary watch for the modern woman. In order to create this timepiece, Louis Moinet had to be patient while waiting to obtain the extremely rare Enstatite EH3 meteorite, which contains nanodiamonds from space! What could be more romantic for the creation of a unique, elegant watch with the name ‘Stardance’? The meteorite was then shaped by the most highly skilled artisans to indicate the phases of the moon. Stardance is an automatic watch with a design inspired by the worlds of day and night. The seconds hand is in the shape of the sun, while the moon phase is displayed against a starry night sky... The watch skilfully combines different materials including mother-of-pearl for the dial and aventurine for the moon phase sky. The titanium frame perfectly sets off the white gold bezel and diamonds. Stardance was recently shortlisted for the Grand Prix de Genève.

The pistes are the best prepared in the world. Various themed areas provide skiers with a variety of exciting settings. Forest skiing is more protected than ever. With 140 million Euros in planned investment over the next seven years, S3V (Société des 3 Vallées) currently has the most ambitious Schedule in France. The

company is supported by exceptional teams who make the Courchevel slopes a jewel in the 3 Valleys crown on a dayto-day basis. 470 professionals work on the ski resort: patrollers, snow groomers, avalanche experts, snow experts etc. “These people make the resort what it is,” says Thomas Thor-Jensen, Director of the ski area. “It’s more than just a job; mountains are our passion.”

TRAVEL At Courchevel, the piste maintenance staff are true craftsmen. “They are all passionate,” says Thomas Thor-Jensen. “They pride themselves on our pistes being the most beautiful, the best groomed and the safest.” The vehicle fleet is updated on a regular basis to help them on their quest for perfection. 4 grooming machines are systematically replaced every winter. Courchevel has a total of 21 machines. This winter, the first ever hybrid grooming machine in the world will start work: the PistenBully 600 E+ by KASSBOHRER. But the resort hasn’t forgotten the machines that have made it what it is today. For example, the American tracked vehicle brought over by Emile Allais in the 60s, the famous Sno Cat, has been refurbished and is now exhibited at démonstrations and events.

Like all Gulfstream interiors, the cabin of the G650 can be configured precisely to the customerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needs. A variety of styling options and materials are available, and the G650 cabin can accommodate up to 18 passengers in up to four distinct living areas. Options include one of 12 interior layouts with a forward or aft galley, with or without a crew compartment. Gulfstream will help the customer design a cabin configuration that best meets the desired versatility and productivity.

The G650 design incorporates increased width, height and length of the fuselage, to increase cabin volume. The wider fuselage can accommodate larger seats, a wider aisle and the capacity to seat three across both sides of conference tables for meals and meetings. The larger body also enabled Gulfstream to increase the size of their signature large oval windows, which are 16 percent larger on the G650, and which enhance the sense of space in the cabin. Sixteen windows run the length of the cabin and fill the space with natural light. For flying at night, LED lights are strategically placed to provide task lighting bright enough for reading but positioned in such a way as to avoid distracting others. The cabin is also designed with a 100 percent fresh-air system that provides a cleaner, healthier cabin environment so passengers arrive at their destination alert and well rested. Cabin altitudes range from 3,200 to 4,850 feet/975 to 1,478 meters, which helps create a more comfortable, and therefore more productive, environment, resulting in a decrease of physical stress for all on board. MB&F Maximilian B端sser & Friends The projects that gave Maximilian B端sser the most pleasure and personal satisfaction during his 15 years managing prestigious watch brands were those working with talented independent watchmakers. An idea for his own personal utopia emerged: that of creating a company dedicated solely to designing and crafting small series of radical concept watches in collaboration with talented professionals he both respected and enjoyed working with. The entrepreneur in B端sser brought the idea to reality.

MB&F is not a watch brand, it is an artistic and microengineering concept laboratory in which collectives of independent horological professionals are assembled each year to design and craft radical Horological Machines. Derived from the iconic HM3 series, MEGAWIND combines a giant 22k gold and titanium winding rotor with highly legible time indication cones rising up from the complex asymmetric case, like truncated gold-framed monoliths. Inevitably inspiration has come from the second-generation Continental GT Coupe, unveiled to universal acclaim almost a year ago. Many of the GT’s signature styling cues have been woven into the new Continental GTC, and the result is a progressive, sculpted and dynamic exterior that re-interprets the family heritage – dating back to the original 1950s R-Type Continental – in a stunning new four-seat convertible body. While the first Continental GTC was elegant and understated, the inspired new design has made its replacement more modern and contemporary. The classic Bentley matrix radiator grille is framed by a striking new headlight design, in traditional four-lamp format, with exquisite jewel-like detailing including eyecatching, LED daytime-running lamps. The car’s muscular front wings are created through an advanced manufacturing process called aluminium Superforming. Heating the aluminium to nearly 500 degrees Celsius, before cleverly shaping it with air pressure, produces uniquely sculpted body panels. And by using a single sheet of aluminium no seams or welds are required. The result is an improved coachbuilt design aesthetic with a reduced number of shut lines. Thus you may “beach” in the lagoon of Piantarella, you may encounter dolphins in the Gulf of San’Amanza or further offshore the Capu di Feno and most certainly near the Lavezzi Islands, you will encounter the European Shag (a species of Cormorant), puffin from the albatross family) and with a bit of luck, the very rare Audouin’s Gull (it’s beak striped with black contrary to the Yellowlegged Gull whose lighter coloured beak bears a red spot).

ARCHITECTURE

It is in the heart of the Alps, in the town of Sion, nestled between the mountains and the vineyards, at the foot of the castles of Valère and Tourbillon that François Meyer chose to settle his architect’s studio in 2004.

Native of Canton of Valais / Switzerland, he also studied in France, Denmark and the United States. He has always been fascinated by art and architecture. Therefore, after his return to Switzerland it was a natural step for him to study architecture at the University (College) of Engineering and Architecture in Fribourg. After receiving his diploma, he worked with various studios in Switzerland and then established himself with his own studio. Fascinated by contemporary architecture he has continuously participated in competitions, which represents for him a way of developing his approach and of measuring himself against

the evolution of the practice. He avoids the easy solutions. For him, each project is unique whatever its nature. He first seeks to identify the challenges of a project in order then to have a clear and appropriate response. The originality and quality of his work has therefore often been recognized by numerous awards in architectural competitions. The studio undertakes a wide range of projects from private homes to large competitions. From public buildings for local authorities, such as ; schools, gymnasiums and homes for persons with mental difficulties to the renovation and conversion of a hotel, the town hall and courthouse in Sion.

MEYER ARCHITECTURE He has been equally active in private home construction and is currently completing his first project for blocks of flats, having won the first prize in that competition. He worked on the conversion in Vetroz with M. Laurent Savioz and M. Claude Fabrizzi Architects. Francois Meyer loves all aspects of his work but states “he prefers the project concept phase because that’s when everything is at stake”. His guideline leaves a great deal of room for imagination while at the same time being realistic, efficient and responsible, resulting in an architecture of quality at all levels ; aesthetic, functional, economic and ecological. His projects are based on a synthesis of the client’s wi-shesandtheexistingconstraints.Suchasrespectforthe surrounding land and constructions, the views to be prioritised and the relationship to the exterior which are all factors that feed the creative process. On a conversion, it is essential to adapt the space to our contemporary lifestyle such as spatial reorganisation, the use of light, its expansion, but it is equally important to recognize the qualities and strengths of what was there before so as not to erase the history of a building. It is necessary to conceive the space so as not only to render it functional but also, and especially, to find the detail that gives it a particular character and special atmosphere. This may be achieved through the choice of materials, colours or an opening towards the exterior, making it possible to create an atmosphere and to elicit feelings. All in the respect of minimum means for a maximum effect. Meyer Architecture offers the full range of architectural services, from project design to execution, including invitations for tender, scheduling, work management and worksite supervision. Its works also extends to furniture production and often collaborates alongside designers and landscape architects to complete each proposal. François Meyer has made a vocation of his passion and has been working for over 20 years on the creation of space.

Olivier Lavielle is a fan of the period from the 1930s to 70s. His world is coloured with jazz, swing, blues and rock’n’roll, with a hint of disco. Untouched by the æsthetics of his own era, his subjects are best expressed exclusively in black and white. His dynamic works are inspired by Hollywood scenes. As an avid traveller, he finds his inspiration in Asia and the United States. As a private pilot, his photos of aircrafts intimately express the special relationship he has with these exceptional machines, which are more than just their technical

nature for him they are fully fledged characters in his film in which they play a leading role. Spend a few moments talking to Olivier and he will convince you beyond a shadow of a doubt that what you have so far only perceived as a collection of rivets and metal are actually magical machines, animate, with their own souls and which, if you pay attention, can take you farther, beyond the horizon, beyond the clouds, beyond history and time … Accredited by Yellow Korner gallery, Olivier Lavielle has been able to touch

the whole world with his nostalgic and poetic vision of aviation. Today his art has gone beyond photography to include cinema, in which he plays the roles of writer, director and, of course, director of photography. But his heart and his eye will always be turned to the sky, the rightful place of the legends of aviation, and he will not rest until he returns them there. His goal is to revive the wonderful DC3, brave little planes and volunteers, pioneers and legendary heroes …
