Manager Profile
Chris Woodward Texas Rangers
Chris Woodward begins his second season as manager of the Texas Rangers this spring. He guided the club to a 78-84 record in 2019, an improvement of 11 victories from 2018 that tied for the third highest increase among Major League teams year over year. The 78 victories marked the second highest total in a Texas manager’s first full season of the past six Rangers’ full-time skippers. Woodward’s first regular season victory on March 28, 2019 against the Chicago Cubs came at the age of 42 years, 277 days, the youngest Texas manager at the time of his first win with the club since Kevin Kennedy (38 years, 335 days) on April 5, 1993 at Baltimore. Woodward was officially announced as the 19th full-time manager in Texas Rangers history on November 3, 2018. He received a three-year contract covering 2019-2021 that included a club option for the 2022 season. Prior to joining the Rangers, Woodward spent three seasons as third base and infield coach on Dave Roberts’ staff with the Los Angeles Dodgers. In that span, the Dodgers compiled a .589 (287-200) regular season winning percentage while capturing the N.L. West Division title all three seasons, advancing to the World Series in 2017 and 2018. Woodward was the first base and infield coach for the Seattle Mariners in 2014-15. He began his coaching career as Seattle’s minor league infield coordinator in 2013 and was promoted to the Major League staff late in that season. He started 2014 as Seattle’s infield coach before assuming first base coaching duties early in the season.
Woodward managed New Zealand in the 2017 World Baseball Classic qualification tournament in Australia in 2016 with a 1-2 record. He was a coach for the New Zealand squad in the 2013 WBC qualification. The former infielder spent all or parts of 12 seasons in the Majors with Toronto (19992004; 2011); New York Mets (2005-06); Atlanta (2007); Seattle (2009-10), and Boston (2009), hitting .239 with 33 homers and 191 RBI in 659 games. He played every position except pitcher and catcher in his MLB career. Woodward made his Major League debut with the Jays on June 7, 1999 at New York-NL in Shea Stadium, posting a sac fly in his first plate appearance and an RBI single off Orel Hershiser in his first at-bat. He spent much

of the 2002-04 seasons as Toronto’s starting shortstop, including Opening Day starts in 2003 and 2004 and hit a career-high three home runs on August 7, 2002 vs. Seattle, the lone multi-homer game of his career, becoming the 15th shortstop in MLB history to hit 3 HR in a game. The right-handed batter hit .276 with 13 homers and 45 RBI with the Blue Jays in 2002 and .261 in a career-best 104 games the following season. He split time between the majors and minors from 2009-11 and concluded his pro career with Triple-A Las Vegas in the Toronto organization in 2012. Woodward was selected by Toronto in the 54th round of the 1994 MLB Draft and signed by Blue Jays scout Bill Moore.
16
He starred in baseball at Northview High School in Covina, CA, where he also played football, and earned All-League, All-Valley, second team All-CIF and team MVP honors in baseball. Woodward then attended Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, CA, where he was named all-conference. He was born in Covina, CA, the same hometown as Rangers Baseball Hall of Famer Michael Young, and the pair knew each other and lived in close proximity at one point during childhood. Woodward now lives in Chandler, AZ with his wife Erin and three children: daughter Sophie and sons Mason and Grady. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in business management from the University of Phoenix in 2012.

STARTING FROM Winter additions have provided the Rangers with a deep rotation By T.R. Sullivan Mlb.com
The Texas Rangers biggest off-season acquisition this winter was a 33-year-old right-handed pitcher who pitched in just seven games last season, won two of them and had a 5.80 ERA. The Rangers expect that pitcher to be at the front of what is projected to be one of the team’s deepest starting rotations in many years. They just need two-time Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber to be fully recovered from a fractured right forearm that ended his 2019 season when he was hit by Miami outfielder Brian Anderson’s line drive on May 1. How Kluber responds to that injury is high on the Rangers agenda this spring during their time in Arizona. But it is also why the Rangers feel as good as they have in a long time about
18
their rotation going into Spring Training. “I know what he has done in the past,” Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. “Clearly a No. 1 starter. Two-time Cy Young winner. Talking to him and seeing how he has responded, we are not too concerned about what happened last year. That has healed up. He works his tail off. His work ethic is legendary. We fully believe he can get back to somewhat of what he used to be. If he is anywhere close to what he used to be, he is absolutely an ace.” Kluber joins left-hander Mike Minor and right-hander Lance Lynn at the top of the Rangers rotation. Minor and Lynn were one of the best 1-2 starting combinations in the Major Leagues last season.
The Rangers acquired two-time A.L. Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber in December. SU R PR ISE S TA D I U M .COM
Minor, in his second full season with the Rangers, made the American League All-Star team and finished 14-10 with a 3.59 ERA and 200 strikeouts over 32 starts. Lynn, signed as a free agent the previous winter, was 16-11 with a 3.67 ERA and 246 strikeouts over his 33 starts. If Kluber is at full strength as expected, the Rangers have a formidable trio to lead their rotation. Kluber was close to being back with the Indians last summer before being shut down by a strained oblique muscle. “I had so much time off in the summer,” Kluber said. “Having been doing what I felt was really good work coming back in my rehab process, I didn’t want to just shut down and forget about it. I just wanted to keep that positive work reinforced. I felt I was in a really good spot. Hopefully, I can hit the ground running in Spring Training.” Three starters do not make a rotation. The Rangers filled out their top five by signing free agent right-handers Kyle Gibson and Jordan Lyles. Both have interesting situations worth watching in Spring Training. Gibson was 13-7 with a 4.84 ERA in 29 starts and five relief appearances for the Twins last season. He was also dealing with ulcerative colitis for much of the year and was never really at full strength physically. He is still a pitcher who has averaged 29 starts, 172 innings and 11 wins over the past six seasons with the Twins. “We have a number of connections from the team to Kyle,” President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Jon Daniels explained. “(Minor League director) Paul Kruger
Mike Minor was the Rangers 2019 Pitcher of the year and a first-time A.L. All-Star.
knows him personally and has always spoke highly of him. Lance Lynn, (teammate [from Minnesota), a friend of his, spoke highly of him. Obviously the player, he has always been a really good starter. A lot of things to like as a pitcher. Outstanding slider, one of the better sliders in the game, really good changeup. He has a lot of ways to get hitters out.” Lyles caught the Rangers attention at the end of the last season after he was traded by the Pirates to the Brewers on July 29. The right-hander made 11 starts for the Brewers and was 7-1 with a 2.45 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. This is a pitcher who stopped relying on a sinker and got better use out of the high fastball. The adjustments he made with the Brewers give the Rangers optimism that he could be a big winner over a full season.
SU R PR ISE S TA D I U M .COM
19
Lance Lynn won 16 games with 246 strikeouts in 2019.
“Jordan Lyles was a guy we identified found something last year,” Woodward said. “When we faced him, we said, ‘OK, he has made some really good adjustments to how he’s using his pitches.’ That was really intriguing for me going forward. He’s always had good stuff, but now we feel like he can sustain the quality that he had for the second half of last year.” The Rangers are in far better position this spring than they were last year when they went to Arizona counting on Drew Smyly, Edinson Volquez and Shelby Miller to all recover from Tommy John surgery. They went 0-for-3 in that regard. The Rangers feel they are in much better position this time around with Kluber, Lyles and Gibson joining Minor and Lynn. This also allows the Rangers to give more Minor League development time to some of 20
their younger pitchers. That group includes left-handers Brock Burke, Kolby Allard and Joe Palumbo, and right-hander Jonathan Hernandez. “That’s what you want, going into Spring Training,” Woodward said. “I know there are going to be setbacks at times. I have been around the game a long time so to think all five starters are going to go all year is not realistic. But we have that depth now. Guys that we were possibly going to have to rely on to fill those spots, are now our depth. “We have 10 or 11 starting pitchers with five really quality starters at the top. We arguably have one of the best rotations in baseball. Sitting here this spring, we feel better about the rotation than we have in a long time.”

New Era of Texas By Madison Pelletier
A
new era of baseball is about to start in Arlington, as the Texas Rangers move into their new state-of-the-art home, Globe Life Field, just in time for the 2020 season. Globe Life Field will provide an unparalleled experience for Rangers fans, including intimate sightlines and upgraded amenities throughout, but the most noticeable difference will be climate control, provided by the largest single panel retractable roof in America. The retractable roof will provide shade and cooler temperature 365 days a year, keeping the average temperature in the mid-70’s, 30 degrees cooler than the hottest peak at Globe Life Park last season. The 5.5 acre retractable roof is one of the most prominent features of the facility, and it was designed with transparency in mind. The roof will be composed of ETFE, a transparent plastic polymer related material, allowing for natural light to fill the entire facility. “Even if the roof may be closed, it’s going to feel like an outdoor facility. That was one of the things we strove for as engineers and architects, was to achieve a feeling of openness even though you’re inside,” Rangers Senior Vice President of Project Development Jack Hill said. Aside from the roof structure, Globe Life Field will also have ETFE placed throughout the facility, allowing for a natural flow of light inside the concourse. Strategic openings through the upper concourse and suite level allow natural light to filter down into the main concourse. “We have been to a lot of other facilities with roof structures and they tend to be a little bit dungeon-like and dark. So one of the things that we stressed with the architects is to try to achieve a feeling of openness and like you were outdoors. I think they’ve done a good job in achieving that,” Hill added. 28
While the climate-controlled atmosphere is a large upgrade, several additional amenities throughout the facility will provide a unique sporting venue experience for all fans. The capacity of Globe Life Field is 40,300, 21 percent less than that of Globe Life Park. The smaller capacity allows for a much more intimate setting. “I think that the fans will probably appreciate the intimacy that we will have with the new Globe Life Field,” Hill said. “When you start comparing the sightlines between Globe Life Field and Globe Life Park, there are clearly some intimate sightlines.” With a larger footprint of 1.8 million square foot, Globe Life Field will provide a wider range of amenities for Rangers’ fans. From a private speakeasy, to the closest suites in baseball, the amenities throughout the ballpark are nothing short of premium. The intimacy and upgraded amenities aren’t limited to the lower bowl, which is approximately seven feet closer than the same accommodation at
SU R PR ISE S TA D I U M .COM
Baseball Globe Life Park. The first row of seating behind home plate on the upper concourse is estimated at 30 feet closer to the field than its predecessor. “At the end of the day that’s what we want; we want a premium experience for all the fans, not just the ones in the premium seats,” Rangers Executive Vice President of Business Operations Rob Matwick said.
The Final Stretch:
Since breaking ground in September 2017, work has stayed on schedule to progress to the fast-approaching March of 2020 opening date. “Normally construction seems to move so slowly that it seems like you can look at the same thing for a week and nothing happens. This project to me has been exactly the opposite of that,” Matwick said. The ballpark is currently transforming from a construction zone into the completed vision, as tile, fixtures and cabinetry are being installed on all levels of the facility.
For the last 30 months, over 1,500 individuals have worked over five million man hours to turn the Rangers’ vision into reality. “That’s how things happen so fast because there are [so many] people focused on their specific area of work,” Matwick added. The last few weeks of construction will be focused on interior finishes, as well as final details for the 240,000 square foot retractable roof. Final work for the synthetic grass surface will also be finalized, making sure the field is ready before the Rangers take on the St. Louis Cardinals in the first exhibition game on March 23rd. Just a week later, the Rangers host their first Opening Day at Globe Life Field, taking on the division rivals Los Angeles Angels.

Manager Profile
Mike Matheny Kansas City Royals
36
SU R PR ISE S TA D I U M .COM
Mike Matheny was named the 17th fulltime manager in Kansas City Royals history on October 31, 2019. He takes the reigns after previously managing the St. Louis Cardinals (2012-18), while he served as a Special Advisor to Player Development for the Royals during the 2019 campaign. He enters
this season ranking seventh among active big league managers with 591 victories, while his .555 winning percentage (591-474) is fifthhighest among that group. Matheny was named Cardinals’ manager on November 14, 2011 and at the time was the youngest manager in baseball (41 years, 53 days). He posted a winning record each year with St. Louis, including a Major Leaguebest 100 victories during the 2015 campaign. Spanning his tenure, the Cardinals had the third-highest winning percentage in the Majors, behind only the Dodgers (.573) and Nationals (.564). Mike led St. Louis to the postseason in each of his first four seasons, becoming the first manager to do that in Major League history. Under his leadership, the Cardinals were a Wild Card qualifier in 2012, before winning three-straight National League Central titles (2013-15). He took the club to the World Series in 2013, falling to the Boston Red Sox, while his teams reached the NLCS in 2012 and 2014, before bowing to the eventual World Series champion San Francisco Giants both years. He will enter the 2020 season having managed 43 postseason games, which are third most in the Majors since 2012, trailing only Houston’s AJ Hinch (50) and the Dodgers’ Dave Roberts (47). Over the last eight postseasons, Mike’s 21 victories are fifth-most. He was relieved of his duties in St. Louis on July 14, 2018. A veteran of 13 Major League seasons as a player, Matheny was originally selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the eighth round of the 1991 First-Year Player Draft. He made his debut with Milwaukee in 1994 and spent time with the Brewers (1994-98), Toronto (1999), St. Louis (2000-04) and San Francisco (200506) in his career.

37
He was a four-time Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner (2000, 2003-05) behind the plate and still holds the Major League catching record for most consecutive errorless games (252). At one time, he also held the MLB record for consecutive errorless chances by a catcher (1,565), until it was broken by Mike Redmond in 2010. He led National League catchers in fielding percentage twice (2003, 2004), while his .994 career fielding percentage ranks 21st all-time among big league backstops (min. 500 games). Mike earned the first Darryl Kile Award in 2003, which is an annual award that recognizes a Cardinals’ player who best demonstrates the qualities that the late Kile brought to
38
the clubhouse. He also earned the Willie Mays Award with the Giants in 2005, being recognized as the most inspirational player on the team. Mike and his wife, Kristin, have five children: Tate, Katie, Luke, Jacob and Blaise and one grandson (Ryker James). His oldest son, Tate, played baseball at Missouri State University and was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2013. His daughter, Katie, played women’s ice hockey at Ohio State University, while sons Luke (Oklahoma State) and Jacob (Missouri) both played baseball at the NCAA Division I level. A native of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Matheny attended the University of Michigan, where he was co-captain of the Wolverines’ baseball team. His wife, Kristin, was also a varsity athlete at Michigan, playing field hockey. During his final years as a player, Mike organized and created the “Catch 22” charity, which resulted in the opening of the “Catch 22 Miracle Field” at Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex in St. Louis in 2005. The field is designed and constructed to allow children of all abilities to experience the thrill of playing baseball. In 2015, he published a book titled “The Matheny Manifesto”, which is about coaching youth baseball with the philosophy of respect, ownership, self-motivation and nononsense sportsmanship.

The Royal Leaders By Nick Kappel, Manager, Communications & Broadcasting Photos: Jason Hanna and Amy Kontras/Kansas City Royals
Despite the team’s disappointing record, the Kansas City’s Royals’ 2019 season was highlighted by many outstanding achievements on the field. Last season, the Royals became the first team in 41 years to have a player or players lead the American League in hits, triples and home runs. Whit Merrifield led the Majors, in fact, with 206 hits, while he, Adalberto Mondesi and Hunter Dozier tied for the Major League lead in triples (10) with Arizona’s Eduardo Escobar. Jorge Soler completed the trifecta by becoming the first Royal to lead the American League in home runs, setting the franchise’s single-season record with 48.
Soler’s 48 home runs were 10 more than the previous record set by Mike Moustakas in 2017, and were one more than Rafael Palmeiro’s 47 in 1999 and 2001 for the most in a single season in Major League history by a Cubanborn player. Twenty one of Soler’s blasts came at Kauffman Stadium, matching Chili Davis (1997) and Dean Palmer (1998) for the most homers in one season in the 47-year history of the ballpark. For good measure, Soler also recorded a career-high 117 RBI, which were the seventh most in franchise history and the most by a Royal since 2000, when Mike Sweeney had a club-record 144 RBI and Jermaine Dye had 118. Soler’s breakout season came thanks in part to his ability to play every day. After playing in no more than 101 Major League games in a season prior to 2019, Soler joined teammate Whit Merrifield, Jonathan Villar and Marcus Semien as the only American League players to appear in all 162 games in 2019. Soler and Merrifield became the seventh and eighth Royals to play in all 162 games in a season, marking the second time in the last three seasons that the club had two players appear in all 162 games. Prior to Eric Hosmer and Alcides Escobar turning the trick in 2017, it hadn’t been done by an American League team since Seattle’s Raúl Ibañez and Ichiro Suzuki did it in 2008.
Another wHIT title
For the second straight season, Whit Merrifield led the Majors in hits, finishing with a career-high 206. After leading the Majors with 192 hits in 2018, Merrifield is the 40

second right-handed batter to lead baseball in hits in consecutive seasons, joining Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett, who did it from 198889. Merrifield is the first player, regardless of handedness, to lead the big leagues in hits in consecutive seasons since Ichiro Suzuki did it in five straight seasons from 2006-10. Merrifield was able to reach the 200hit plateau in part because of his uncanny consistency. He recorded a hit in a Major League-best 129 of 162 games (80.1%), three more than Kevin Seitzer’s previous club record set in 1987. Merrifield’s 129 games with a hit were the most in the Majors since Derek Jeter also hit in 129 games in 2012. Merrifield’s season, of course, began with an 11-game hit streak. In tandem with his 20-game run to end the previous season, Merrifield’s 31-game hit streak broke George Brett’s previous franchise record of 30, set in 1980. It was the longest hitting streak in the Majors since 2011. Merrifield started games at six different positions in 2019, and his defensive prowess keyed an important team record. The Royals committed just 73 errors last season, second fewest in the American League. It marked the third straight season that the Royals have set
the club’s single-season record for fewest errors in a 162-game season, after being charged with 79 miscues in 2017 and 77 in 2018. In doing so, the Royals became the first team in Major League history to record 80 errors or fewer in three straight 162-game seasons.

Royal Flush
Kansas City’s dynamic trio of Merrifield, Soler and Adalberto Mondesi achieved feat that hadn’t been accomplished in almost 90 years. According to research by Fox Sports Kansas City’s Dave Holtzman, the 2019 Royals were the first American League team since the 1931 Yankees to have a player with at least 200 hits (Merrifield), a different player with at least 45 home runs (Soler) and another player with at least 40 steals (Mondesi). Those 1931 Yankees turned the trick with few players you may have heard of: Lou Gehrig (211 hits), Babe Ruth (46 home runs) and Ben Chapman (61 steals). Merrifield and Soler were also the first American League teammates in which one had
at least 200 hits and the other had 45 home runs since Derek Jeter (206 hits) and Alex Rodriguez (54 home runs) did it with the Yankees in 2007.
Magic Mondi
Despite missing 52 games over two stints on the Injured List last season, Mondesi still produced a historic season as the Royals’ shortstop. According to Sportradar, Mondesi was the first player since at least 1900 to record at least 40 stolen bases (43) and at least 10 triples (10) in fewer than 450 plate appearances (443). He was the first American League shortstop to reach that combination of steals and triples since Kansas City’s Freddie Patek (49 steals, 11 triples) in 1971.
Last season, the Royals became the first team in 41 years to have a player or players lead the American League in hits, triples and home runs.

Closing with Kennedy
Veteran pitcher Ian Kennedy made the successful transition from starter to reliever last season, and tied for fourth in the American League with 30 saves. After recording just two relief appearances in the Majors prior to 2019, Kennedy became the fourth pitcher ever to record a 20-win and 30-save season, joining John Smoltz, Derek Lowe and Dennis Eckersley. (Kennedy previously won a careerbest 21 games with Arizona in 2011.) Of Kennedy’s 30 saves, 28 came between May 30 and the end of the season, two more than any other pitcher in the Majors during that time.
No Minor Feat
If you’re still looking for optimism in 2020, consider that lots of young, exciting talent is on the way, courtesy of a stacked farm system. Five of Kansas City’s minor league affiliates earned postseason berths last season, and all five reached their league championship series. Burlington (R) lost in the Appalachian League Championship Series, but the Dominican Royals 1, Lexington (A), Wilmington (A+) and Idaho Falls won their respective league titles, making Kansas City the first organization to have four minor league championship-winning teams since the 2004 Cleveland Indians.
