it’s our time to thrive! Welcome to the second issue of thrive magazine and the start of a new healthy year! Since our premier issue launched back in July 2013, it has been wonderfully received by Triangle area men and women.
This issue we cover a very important topic; Health and Genetics. As more and more information is revealed about the importance of knowing your family health history, we thought we would devote an entire section to it. We chose our beautiful cover family this year in part because of their similar physical features. But just as genes have us looking like our mothers, fathers, brothers

How to Get a Professional Look for Family Photos Great photos make wonderful memories for years to come. Bad photos remind you how much you hated your crooked teeth or how embarrassing that awkward phase was every time you look at them. While you may not be able to hide certain features, there are things you can do to get professional looking photos that you will love for years to come, by simply making different choices with your clothing and how you pose. What to Wear Though you don’t want to be too “mitchy-matchy” in your wardrobe selection, your family’s clothing should complement each other. Your clothing shouldn’t look like a uniform that you all put on for picture day, but it shouldn’t clash either. Choose a color family, such as pastels, to create a cohesive. Limit patterns, as these can compete with the background or what other people in your group are wearing. Avoid clothing with logos, characters and text on it. Also, avoid any obvious trend pieces. No one wants to remember acid-washed jeans or Hypercolor t-shirts.

How to Group Yourselves A good photographer will tell you where to stand for the best composition in the photo. However, knowing a few tricks of your own can help you to work with the photographer for the best possible shot. Standing close together is best for an intimate shot, and staggering your levels creates visual interest in the photo (by alternating who is sitting, standing, kneeling and so on). For large families, you should think about how you are arranged in groups of twos and threes. Think about how you look in each of these “mini-groups” and then think about those groups in terms of the overall composition. Posing It may be difficult not to strike a pose when you are sitting for a formal family photograph. However, learning how to relax and just be yourself in front of the camera can create some beautiful photographs that show off your real personality. Relax your face and

your body. Tell jokes to one another so that you will laugh and your smiles will be genuine. If you are taking pictures with several children, take some formal shots right away, but then let the children relax and play. You will find that you are likely to get better shots when you can capture their natural vibrancy and energy.

Each story spotlights the coping skills each individual applied to their situation and what personally worked for them in healing.
Would you like to share your story? We would love to hear from you. Email us at info@thrivemagazines.com and tell us about yourself or a friend or family member who you would like to see in our next issue. Please also submit a low resolution picture with the email. small percentage of patients have some swelling and bruising. Comfort levels vary from patient to patient during the treatment.” These may include overthe-counter pain relievers, prescription medications, and local anesthesia. This would be discussed during the consultation and a plan formulated specifically for you. “Ultherapy addresses mild to moderate laxity of the face and neck by stimulating collagen in the deeper tissue layer,” Dr. Diehl shares. “Some patients can expect a 20 to 40 percent face lift result, giving a gentle lift to the treated areas. Subtle and gradual changes over time keep the results natural. A healthy lifestyle and pharmaceutical-grade skin care work hand in hand with facial rejuvenation procedures to give the best long term results.” Ultherapy is appropriate for any skin type since it is not a laser therapy, so any patient may be eligible for the treatment. “Because the technology is treating the deeper tissue layers, there is no skin sensitivity, need to avoid the sun after the treatment, or increased risk for different ethnicities,” Dr. Diehl says. Patients with more complex skin issues may need to combine Ultherapy with other treatments, such as laser therapy or chemical peels. It is important for each person to consult with a doctor discuss therapeutic options that will achieve the best results.

You may even be thinking “Is that a thing?” Not only is it a thing, but it’s just as important as protecting those other investments in your life – maybe even more so since it’s the only skin you’ll have throughout your life, and you need to protect it. how to buy a mattress for optimum health and better sleep A good night’s sleep can be the best medicine for improving your health. Getting enough sleep, and getting high quality sleep, can help to reduce your stress levels, increase your energy, balance your moods and lower your overall risk of poor health conditions and disease. Your mattress can have a big impact on how much you sleep and how well you sleep. Understanding the important qualities of a good
thrive magazine
mattress can help you choose the best mattress to give you a great night’s sleep.
32
Criteria to Look For
Health Benefits
Selection Process
Size
The more size you have, the more room you have to roam on the bed. If you are sharing a bed with a significant other, the size becomes even more important. If you are both crammed into a full, you may find you don’t have enough room to stretch out and relax. You may wake up with pinched muscles or cramps.
By having the room to stretch out as needed, you allow your muscles to relax, which can help you to relieve stress and to get a better night’s sleep. You’ll wake up feeling refreshed and with more energy.
Measure your room to find out how much space you have for your new mattress. If you can spare the space, a king size bed is the best choice for a couple, and a queen provides plenty of room for a single person. If you and your significant other are smaller people, you may find you have plenty of space in a queen.
Mattress Type
There are three primary types of mattresses: Polyurethane foam mattresses, innerspring mattresses and water beds. The first are the “memory foam” type mattresses that mold to the shape of your body. Innerspring mattresses are the most common type of mattress, and they include springs in the cushioning of the mattress to provide support. Water beds tend to provide the least support and may actually contribute to health problems.
Memory foam mattresses help evenly distribute your weight for maximum support to relieve pressure and encourage deep, restorative sleep. Innerspring mattresses come with a range of options, including different firmness and padding. Mattresses that offer even distribution and support are the best. Water beds offer few health benefits since they allow sleepers to roll around a lot and provide little support.
Try the “sleep test.” When choosing a new mattress, lay down on the mattress in your typical sleeping position. Choose a mattress that makes you feel comfortable and supported.
Firmness
A mattress should be neither too firm nor too soft. A firm mattress can give you support, but if it’s too firm, it can lead to more aches and pains, like a stiff back.
A firm mattress helps provide support for your spine, keeping it in alignment and relieving stress and pain. For example, firmer mattresses can relieve back pain. However, if a mattress is too firm, it can cause pain on pressure points, such as the hips and the shoulders.
Consider your health conditions when choosing your mattress. If you have an achy back, a firmer mattress may be best. If you suffer from hip or shoulder pain, you may need a mattress that is a bit softer.
Sleep Temperature
Maintaining a comfortable temperature in your sleeping environment can help you rest better. Memory foam mattresses and water beds may not allow the mattress to “breathe” as easily, which can make the bed hot and uncomfortable. Innerspring mattresses offer more breathability to keep the surface area of the mattress cool.
WebMD says that the best temperature for sleeping is between 65 and 72 degrees, and that when this temperature is maintained, people can sleep longer and more deeply. Better sleep equals better health.
When comparing mattresses, look for manufacturer information about the breathability of the materials. Conduct the sleep test and lay on the mattress long enough to get a feel for the temperature. If you start to feel warmer in your short test, you can feel fairly certain that the mattress will warm up a lot over a night’s worth of sleep.
Be sure to comparison shop when you are looking for a new mattress to help you get the best price. Always ask for a guarantee, and always shop for mattresses in person.

the nucleus of the cell for the woman’s egg and not the mitochondrial DNA that carries the genes for certain types of diseases.
What is Genomics? Genomics is the study of all the genes in a person, as well as the interactions of those genes with each other and a person’s environment. All people are 99.9% identical in genetic makeup, but differences in the remaining 0.1% hold important clues about health and disease.
However, women would have to agree to in-vitro fertilization to take advantage this method, as it cannot yet be used with natural conception. Women can also choose to become pregnant using donor eggs and IVF. By using someone else’s eggs, a woman can bypass her own genetics and reduce the chances that her offspring would inherit a predisposition to a disease. In rare cases, you can take extreme measures such as removing tissues or organs

By studying the relationship between genes, environment, and behaviors, researchers and practitioners can learn why some people get sick, while others do not. Family health history information can also help to identify people who may have a higher risk for certain diseases. Better understanding of genetic and family history information can help researchers and practitioners identify, develop, and evaluate screening and other interventions that can improve health and prevent disease.

Testing for Genetic Risk The following information has been retrieved from cancer.gov for reproduction in this article. For more information visit their website at: www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/genetic-testing
What is Genetic Testing? Genetic testing looks for specific inherited changes (mutations) in a person’s chromosomes, genes, or proteins. Genetic mutations can have harmful, beneficial, neutral (no effect), or uncertain effects on health. Mutations that are harmful may increase a person’s chance, or risk, of developing a disease such as cancer. Overall, inherited mutations are thought to play a role in about 5 to 10 percent of all cancers.
What genetic tests are available for cancer risk? More than 50 hereditary cancer syndromes have been described. The majority of these are caused by highly penetrant mutations that are inherited in a dominant fashion. The list below includes some of the more common inherited cancer syndromes for which genetic testing is available, the gene(s) that are mutated in each syndrome, and the cancer types most often associated with these syndromes. n

What genetic testing can do is help people develop a preventive health plan that can reduce their risk of developing the cancer, and increase their chances of early diagnosis and treatment if cancer does develop. Eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, getting plenty of sleep each night and reducing stress can all help to reduce the risk of all types of cancers. Though dentists agree that cavities themselves are not inherited, several factors that may lead to an increased number of cavities can be passed down from your parents.

Seven Things to Eat Right Now! Overall, look for items that stimulate saliva production, which has a neutralizing effect on acid. That’s because saliva naturally contains bicarbonate, which neutralizes acid, as well as calcium and phosphate which help to “re-mineralize” the tooth’s surface, according Mark S. Wolff DDS, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Cariology and Comprehensive Care, also at the NYU College of Dentistry. Other acid neutralizers, like those found in dairy can also help prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Here are seven foods that have been shown to help in the research or clinical practice: (1) Cheese (2) Sugar-free Gum (3) Celery (4) Tap Water (5) Pears (6) Yogurt (7) Sesame Oil
and there are no home remedies to change the shape or spacing of your teeth. However, there are many dental treatments available to fix these issues. For example, Dr. Vice offers braces and Invisalign treatments, crowns and bridges, veneers, dental implants and toothcolored fillings. These treatments can correct your bite, the spacing of your teeth and even the shape of your teeth. Depending on the types of dental problems you may have inherited, you might need to use a combination of treatments. By visiting a dentist every six months, you can catch the signs of any oral health problems early, before they worsen. Ultimately, you are not helpless to your genetics. Take charge of your oral health every day, and work closely with a dentist or orthodontist to evaluate and correct

& breast cancer screening Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women, regardless of race or ethnicity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 40,996 women and 439 men died from breast cancer in the United States in 2010, the most recent year for which data is available. That same year, 206,966 women and 2,039 men in the United States were diagnosed with breast cancer.
Early detection is one of the most powerful tools in the fight against breast cancer. By detecting the symptoms of breast cancer as early as possible, doctors can begin providing treatments to eradicate the disease before it has a chance to spread to other parts of the body or to grow in size. Benign growths can also be detected before they become malignant. The American Cancer Society recommends that women begin getting mammograms at the age of 40 to begin screening for early signs of breast cancer. The ACS says that women should then get a mammogram every year. However, the National Cancer Institute says that screening can take place every

A traditional mammogram takes a 2D image of a woman’s breast tissue by flattening the breasts between two x-ray plates and taking a picture. A 3D mammogram takes additional photos of the breast tissue with an x-ray arm that moves in an arc over the breast.
Because of the clearer image that a 3D mammogram produces, the test has been shown to improve breast cancer detection by 27 percent to 50 percent.

Some doctors have expressed concern about the levels of radiation used in 3D mammography. Though it is a low dose, the levels of radiation in a 3D mammogram can be twice as high as in a traditional mammogram. However, it is important to note that the overall level of radiation is very low, and still falls under the threshold identified as

spices for immunity and health Spices can take your cooking to a whole other level, adding a unique flavor to your favorite dishes or making a bland dish more flavorful and interesting. Yet spices bring more to the table than a little zest on your pasta or a savory hint to your sweet potatoes. The right spices can actually boost your immune system, lower your blood pressure, or lower your risk of diseases such as diabetes and cancer. Learn which spices can benefit you and then keep your pantry stocked so you can quickly and easily add them to all your dishes.

This Indian spice has a long history of being used to improve health. It is known to be a detoxifying agent to naturally cleanse the liver. It also has antibacterial properties and is anti-inflammatory, which can reduce the risk of many diseases, such as cancer, Alzheimer’s and arthritis. It has also been linked to a lower risk of depression.
This fragrant herb stimulate digestion, which can lead to healthy elimination to detox the body and lower the risk of poor health conditions. Marjoram has been shown to help regulate mood, improve sleep and treat itchy skin.
They may be too hot for some to handle, but chilis have a number of health benefits. Chili powder has antioxidants that can fight pain, reduce inflammation and boost immunity. Chili powder can also increase your metabolism, so that chili dog might not go straight to your hips.
This savory herb is a favorite for Italian dishes. Oregano is loaded with antioxidants, which can fight inflammation and lower the risk of disease. Oregano is also an antibacterial agent to fight against infection and illness.
Suggested Uses
Sprinkle it on a stir fry or curry, roasted vegetables or risotto. You can also create a tea with lemon, turmeric and other spices, such as cinnamon.
Suggested Uses
Rub it into a roast or loin before broiling or grilling, sprinkle it on pasta or mix it in with soups and stews.
Suggested Uses
Add it to chili (obviously), stews, soups, meats, pasta or roasted veggies. If you don’t like the spicy stuff, just sprinkle a little bit for a little punch that won’t overwhelm your tastes but will still give you the health benefits.
Suggested Uses
Put it on salads, pizza, pasta, meat, vegetables and more. It has a savory flavor, so it can go with most dinner foods.

Rosemary has a strong, pleasing smell, which is often used in aromatherapy. When you add it to your food, rosemary has been shown to regulate mood, improve digestion, and fight colds. Rosemary is an antiseptic, so it can fight infections and alleviate aches and pains.
Cinnamon is a sweet “spice” that can help you regulate blood-sugar levels, improving your metabolism and lowering your risk of diabetes and metabolic disorders.
Ginger helps to settle an upset stomach, which is why so many pregnant ladies drink flat Ginger Ale. Ginger can also fight inflammation and improve digestion.
Suggested Uses
Suggested Uses
Sprinkle some on your morning oatmeal, or stir it into a cup of coffee. Cinnamon tastes great on just about any dessert – from ice cream to cakes – as well as some savory dishes, like a curry or sweet potatoes.
Add it to stir fry or drink it in a soothing tea. You can even eat pieces of candied ginger for a treat.
Garlic is the spice that everyone either loves or hates – though most love. Garlic has strong anti-inflammatory properties, has been shown to improve immunity, and has been linked to a lower risk of cancer and heart disease.
Suggested Uses
If you’re brave, you can roast garlic cloves and eat them whole. Otherwise, mince it or slice it and add it to meats, vegetables, potatoes, casseroles, pizza and pastas.

Lowri says: “This is a quick and easy, but incredibly nutritious midweek supper. Salmon, avocado and pumpkin seeds are all packed full of healthy omega 3 fats which are great for your heart, skin and brain. The crisp, pepperiness of the radishes are a great contrast to silky texture of the salmon and avocado. Plus, if you use a good non-stick pan and a spray oil, you keep the unhealthy saturated fat down and the salmon stays succulent.”

After the solid vegetables have been in for 30 minutes turn them and add the softer vegetables after tossing them in oil, roast a further 40 minutes. Tie the rosemary sprigs together and leaving one length of string long, tie it to the handle of the pot. Bring the contents of the pot to boil and then reduce to simmer. Once the vegetables have roasted remove them from the oven and add to the pot and simmer for 3 hours (you may need to add some water over those hours as the soup may dry up slightly). 3D MAMMOGRAPHY WE’RE TALKING WAY BETTER IMAGING, EARLIER DETECTION, FEWER FALSE POSITIVES AND LESS CHANCE OF A CALL BACK. END OF DISCUSSION.
3D MAMMOGRAPHY • GREATER ACCURACY • REDUCED ANXIETY • NOW AT WAKE RADIOLOGY Let’s have a frank discussion. You can’t treat what you can’t detect. And 3D mammography, along with your regular 2D exam, is revolutionizing breast cancer detection. How? By significantly improving clarity for earlier detection and fewer false positives. Which, of course, reduces recall rates and the anxiety that comes with additional tests. To learn more about 3D mammography or to schedule an appointment, visit wakerad.com. Like we said, you can’t treat what you can’t see. And now we’re seeing better than ever.
