Doing It The Marie Forleo Way Using your talents to target success

Marie Forleo is a life and business coach with a clear mission to motivate others to become the best person that they can possibly be and to use whatever talents and gifts they have to change the world. That’s a big mission, but if her example is anything to go by, then it’s one that is completely doable. No one knows the value in backing herself more than Marie Forleo. At the age of 43, this inspirational woman has been named by Oprah as a thought leader for the next generation and her business is listed as one of Inc’s 500 fastest growing companies. So, just who is Marie Forleo and how did she become someone that Oprah wants on her couch?

8

When Forleo first started her mission to motivate others almost twenty years ago, she was still trying to work out her own path in life and was working two jobs to make ends meet. She had dabbled in the finance world and in the world of magazines before stumbling on what was going to become her life long passion – life coaching. So, she quit

her secure, full-time job, went back to bartending and waiting on tables and back to school to learn what a life coach is and how to become one. She knew at the time that it was a crazy idea, but somewhere deep in her bones, she knew it was the right idea for her and she wasn’t afraid to back herself. The gamble paid off. Today, she is the founder of B-School, the creator of the award-winning online show, Marie TV, has worked as a mentor at Richard Branson’s Centre of Entrepreneurship, has spearheaded the Change Your Life, Change the World Initiative and has a huge global following of people being inspired and motivated by her mission and belief that everyone can be successful.

“Use all of your strengths and talents to create success, don’t limit yourself!” Forleo credits part of her success to her ability to combine a variety of different passions, interests and ideas into her work life - her love of fitness and dance, her spirituality, business interests and passion to make a difference. One of Forleo’s strongest messages is “use all of your strengths and talents to create success, don’t limit yourself!” In an interview for the podcast “This Is Success”, Forleo succinctly explains one of the keys to her success. “I call myself a multi-passionate entrepreneur. If you’re built somewhat

like me, where there are many things that you want to do and explore, you should do them. Because, there will likely come a convergence point at multiple areas in your future where everything you’ve done comes into play and then all of a sudden, like in my case, it creates such a unique strength 9

set and talent set that is unmatchable by anyone,” she says. Great advice, but aside from playing to her strengths, how exactly did one women develop such a strong brand that she has a following of over 500 000 women in 108 countries, an invite by Sir Richard Branson to mentor other young female entrepreneurs in South Africa and an invite to the Oprah show? Here are some of the things that Marie Forleo did to become one of the worlds most talked about female entrepreneurs: •

She created a distinctive and clear brand even before her business took off: From the very foundation of her business days Forleo knew her brand message and exactly what she wanted it to represent. She was very clear in the qualities that she wanted her brand to represent even way before her business prowess begun to flourish.

She took every opportunity to build her business: Even in the early days when her business was just a pipe dream whilst she was working in a bar, Forleo took her opportunity to talk to people about her ideas, to pitch her thoughts and to obtain contact information for her future email newsletter. Her business idea was at the forefront of her mind and she took every opportunity to talk about and promote it.

She let others do the talking:

There is no better way to promote any business than by word of mouth and Forleo has always been big on letting others do the talking for her. She knows the value of a great testimonial and is not afraid to let the positive talk speak for itself, making sure that her website is full of all the great testimonials that she has received. •

She gives generously: One of the best ways to position yourself in your field as an expert is to make sure that your message is shared freely and generously. Forleo has always done this well. From her start up days she has provided the community with a vast array of information, ideas and thoughts that have been invaluable to her branding success and her business growth. By giving freely and generously she has allowed her audience to get to know her and invest in her prior to making any decisions to buy from her.

Forleo’s innovative and inspiring approach to business success is influencing a new generation of female entrepreneurs and is changing the way that women think about business. MarieForleo.com is one of Forbes.com’s Top 100 Websites for Entrepreneurs and is a great place to visit to learn more about Marie Forleo or to get some inspiration to start your own entrepreneurial journey.

Rebecca Ray:

SCARED, BUT TENACIOUS

Author Rebecca’s message centres on the task of living bravely in the truth of our experiences as finders and seekers of meaning and connection. A Clinical Psychologist for the best part of two decades, she is also the creator of digital courses including Overcoming Self-Sabotage: From Paralysis to Progress and Radical Courage: Transforming Fear into Freedom. She is the author of The Art of SelfKindness, The Universe Listens to Brave and Be Happy: 35 Powerful Methods for Personal Growth and Well-

Being and is a wealth of knowledge on the journey through fear. Soulful Business chats with Rebecca about her latest book, The Art of SelfKindness, where she asks you to extend an invitation to yourself to be your own best friend. “The basis of self kindness is teaching people that the relationship they have with themselves is the most important one of all. It affects every single other relationship we have in our lives,” says Rebecca. 11

“Self-love can sometimes feel unachievable and out of reach. To be able to come to place of self-kindness, to be able to relate to yourself in a way that is gentle, compassionate and allows you to move forward without judging, attacking or punishing yourself, is far more realistic,” she says. Running your own business is something that can trigger a lot of fear. It’s easy to beat yourself up about feeling this way, but Rebecca knows there is a way through this by being kind to yourself.

“The world needs the piece of you that you are bringing,” she tells herself. “Humans often don’t allow ourselves to do its to trip up and make mistakes. If you are going to run a business yourself, manage a relationship and parent, you need to understand that there is a lot of risk there. You won’t be able to show up a hundred percent in every area, so you will need to be able to fail bravely. This means giving yourself permission to get things wrong without giving yourself a hard time about it.”

“The basis of self kindness is teaching people that the relationship they have with themselves is the most important one of all. It affects every single other relationship we have in our lives.” “When we run our own businesses, we run the gauntlet every single day. We do things every day that are scary, so if you can’t face fear gently, by being able to be kind to yourself and give yourself space to be imperfect, you can end up with a brick wall in front of you.” She says its important to remember that it’s really okay “to not know, but to do things anyway,” to remember to say yes, to allow yourself to be human. “Every time I say yes to something I haven’t done before, I feel the fear breathing down the back of my neck. I’ve been able to harness courage and be kind to my self and say, ‘you can do this your way, in your voice, the way you look right now. 12

“There’s courage behind that, because although you are vulnerable, you are still trying to do something meaningful and move forward,” she says. Rebecca is just as human as the rest of us. Her struggle to maintain everything a busy woman juggles is as real as anyone’s and with a 20 month old baby at home, she is tested by her load daily. “Some days, I just don’t know how to do life. I just don’t. But my process is focusing on the present moment. Speaking to myself in a way that’s respectful and kind, but not copping out.”

Several years ago, Rebecca suffered burnout. She had been a psychologist for twenty years and had been giving to others every day. She realised that she was completely depleted. Wanting to continue her work without clinical visits continuing to empty her resources, she turned to social media in 2015. “The fear I had in writing under my own name, was huge, but I realised that this is what its all about. Sitting in that. Getting my message out to the people who need it, showing up, being vulnerable, being real.” She was surprised to find her purpose where she didn’t realise it would be. After resisting social media for a long time, Rebecca knew she had to finally strip it all back and say ‘this is me and this is what I have to share with you.’ “There’s power in that,” she says. “It goes beyond us. I’m not me without my people. They show up online. They’re there for me just as much as I am there for them.” “There’s a line right now in the world of over sharing and under sharing. I try to walk a middle line. I share with hope and humour, that there is a way through and it’s going to be ok.” “I harness in the energy to get where I need to go and draw some lines, but I try to maintain a sense of consecutiveness that there is something bigger than me. “I just do it. No matter how much fear gets in my way, I still do it. I’m tenacious. I’m scared, but tenacious.”

Rebecca can be found online daily, interacting with her community about finding courage and living expansive lives while going gently on ourselves. Listen to the full interview here https://vimeo.com/384900155

Clarify

YOUR PHILOSOPHY

BY DR. MARK POSTLES Every person on this planet has a philosophy - including you.The philosophy that you have relates to and includes everything in yourworld. The clothes you wear, the car you drive, the relationships you have, the business you create etc. They are all a result of your ruling philosophy. Philosophy as a way of thinking about something. Every result that you have in your life and business has to do with your philosophy. You craft your philosophy, whether you are conscious of the process or not. Your philosophy is an integrated view of your perception of existence. Your ideas, experiences, thoughts, words, and deeds form your model of the world. This is your philosophy and it plays out giving you what you are and have.

Your philosophy gives you your wings and empowers you to create what it is that you create. Eleanor Roosevelt said it this way, “One’s philosophy is not best expressed in words. It’s expressing the choices one makes. In the long run, we shape our lives and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die, and the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.” Whether you have defined your philosophy or not it still runs you. Herein lies the challenge. You may have taken on a philosophy on life, people, success, the world (you name the entity) that may have been useful at some point on your life’s journey but may no longer be but because you think FROM your 15

16

“Go deep into this. This is so incredibly important. You are totally unique.”

philosophy and not ABOUT it you don’t question it. It keeps producing the same results that you don’t want and you feel disappointed and frustrated. Maybe it’s time for you to revisit some of your basic notions, your values, your beliefs? Take a moment to look at your contradictions. Confess any errors in your thinking. If you have a situation that’s not working, and you continue to do the same thing, and you continue to maintain the same philosophyyou are keeping a contradiction in place. Where are you not accepting your divine essence? As James Ray reminded us, “Buried deep within each of us is a spark of greatness. A spark can be fanned into the flames are passion and achievement. And that spark’s not outside of you. It’s born deep within you.” Breathe it in. Be grateful for EVERYTHING (“Good” and “Bad”). Choose your words with care because they resonate through every tissues of your body and beyond. Just for starters ask yourself, “What drives me? What is it I’m really passionate about? What makes

my heart sing? What’s my view on life? What’s my view on the world? What’s my view on people? Do I trust people? Are people inherently good or they inherently evil? “Am I OK with abundance, wealth and prosperity?” What’s my greatest gift to humanity?” What amI here for? What’s my mission? Got the idea? Identifying your core personal and business values, creating your purpose statements, crafting a manifesto, doing morning and evening gratitude sessions are a great place to start the process of identifying your philosophy. Go deep into this. This is so incredibly important. You are totally unique. You are here for a purpose. You have a message for the world. You have a responsibility to shine your light upon the world and grace it with your presence. Your philosophy frames every fabric of your life. So make sure that you give it the time that it deserves. thein8model.com

WORKING WITH THE

Cycles Of The Moon

By Nerida Weaver

Many of us Soulful business owners started out with a strong passion, a calling that could no longer be ignored and a beautiful vision of creating a lifework balance. The dream of balance can over time become a nightmare of overwhelm, to-do-lists and all-nighters so that you can work around the kids. The familiar push-push energy we vowed we’d never do again becomes a default state and all of a sudden we find ourselves a long way down the fatigued track, feeling completly disconnected from the inspirational seed and burning desire to make the world a better place that made us start in the first place. Or is that just me? Actually, that was me up until a few years ago. I have built several very successful companies but with each of them, wound up at the point of burn out and exhaustion.

18

And then... I made a discovery that turned everything around! Lunar Abundance by Dr Ezzie Spencer found its way into my awareness. A system of working with nature’s rythms (such glaringly obvious wisdom that I’d completely missed in the context of how I worked!) The sun doesn’t shine 24/7, the flowers don’t bloom consistently, the moon waxes and wanes. Many of us are raised with a very masculine work ethic which unconsciously plays out as us pushing to be “on” and achieving every working moment. It’s no wonder that females being cyclic by nature, inevitably find ourselves at burn out point. Tuning into the cycles of the moon opened a whole new way of working my business that felt amazing! Following nature’s rhythms and applying the Lunar Abundance system allowed for a balance of yin and yang energy (where

previously I was almost consistently in the yang state). This was a way to transition from the push-push type of energy to a much more gentle one of attraction. Things just fell into place, the space created in the yin times allowed room for reflection, gratitude and receiving. The yang times allowed for discerning action, redirection when necessary and giving back. Working this way feels so much more spacious. Whether you are the A-Type action person, a procrastinator that finds it difficult to move into action or somewhere in between, following the Lunar Abundance system is a great way to have a natural prompter to keep you on track and mindful the whole month. I love that each cycle is only a few days long and a perfect way to balance anyone’s work method. 20

For all soulful business owners but most particularly females, working with the cycles of the moon creates an environment of balance and guilt free self-care that supports our personal welfare so that we can sustainably go forward and create the change in the world we’re here to. If you’re not already using a system that tunes you into nature’s rhythms, I hope you’ll apply this and give it a go! In fact, it’s become such a big part of how I run my business that I’ve incorporated this aspect into our monthly membership to help other business owners tune in and reap the benefits of working with the cycles of the moon.

Carmen Marshall: BALANCING WORK AND LIFE FOR SUCCESS

Multinational entrepreneur, Soul Craft™ founder, Carmen Marshall is the master creator behind a new business strategy that incorporates true work / life balance. Her company’s modern-spirited line of educational programs, products, courses, gifts, and wisdom help you create a life you love— “because life is too short to watch your soul crumble, and your enthusiasm fade.” We sit down with Carmen to chat about clarity, growth, abundance, freedom, love, accomplishment, ease, confidence, purpose, prosperity, and even a little magic. “I had no idea I wanted to be an entrepreneur when I was at university. I graduated, got my dream job in South Korea and was working so hard to make someone else wealthy, I realised I should harness my skills and set myself up instead,” says Carmen. 21

She entered into the world of network marketing at 27 and says she couldn’t afford a lot, but was always looking for her purpose; something she would really love. “We need to love what we do. I knew I was meant to be doing something amazing. I still ask myself all the time, am I enjoying what I’m doing. Not, is it easy, but, do I still love what I am working toward?” Her first business was in Australia, where she invested a year and a half working on a product that she was very passionate about. “This is so important to becoming successful; to be passionate about what you are doing. I then went looking for my second network marketing company and after I looked at 73 different companies, in the year 2000, I found the one,” she says. Personal development was still Carmen’s passion. She was health coaching on the side, as well as teaching fitness classes all while still trying to develop a company that talked about health, money and life design It took a couple of years for a turn around to happen where she began to see it flourish. “My business is a framework for designing an all-new kind of modern lifestyle that lets you live—and earn— in gorgeously-inspired ways…without having to give up one in order to have the other.” “I teach in one of my programs about the 10 needle moving activities for your 22

business. 5 of them are things you need to do for your business and the other 5 are things you need to do for your life,” she says. “Working on both is soulful nourished life, it is so important to balance BOTH of these aspects.”

Carmen’s 4 key points to hit when starting out in business: 1. Figure out what you LOVE first of all, whether you’re paid or not. There are so many ups and downs and if you truly love it, you’ll still keep going through the hard times. 2. Give it two years. No matter what, it takes two years to start seeing success. 3. Find mentors. Find people who not only say they know how to do it but love their life. Their mindset will flow through to you. Make sure you really resonate with them as a person. 4. Reinvent yourself. Don’t be scared to evolve. “It’s the number one thing that I teach in my 8 week course is to do what you love and you find all of your people there,” Carmen says. Carmen truly believes that we must find out what makes us feel alive. Lift weights, do yoga, walk in nature, make music, dance, sing, paint; these things can really bring us to life, giving us that important work / life balance. Her passion is dance. She still teaches dance and has even furthered her businesses through her passion.

“Everyone can dance. It’s in our lineage. Dancing is one of the quickest ways to make you feel alive. It releases inhibitions, if you just let go and connect with yourself, it will transfer out of the dance class and into the real world,” she says.

“I’m proud to have been spearheading the Soul Craft™ movement for the past twenty years, where I’ve helped women from around the world design an intentional life that feels good for them to live—while making abundant, soulful money that feels good to make.”

“Word of mouth is everything. If it comes from a place of doing something you really love, then your vibration is very high and so the people who are coming to you, their vibration is very high. Then you have this network where people are feeling good and they are recommending you. That’s literally how I built most of my businesses – through my dance classes. Two days per week, I found my people. My tribe.”

Carmen’s Top tips

Measure your success by looking at if your business is working well and your life is working well. That means success. Carmen says if one or the other isn’t working, then it needs attention and rebalancing. This global entrepreneur shares her time between Maui, Bali and Australia these days. “We live and work in these different places. It gives me fresh inspiration each time. It satisfies both parts of my personality; the creativity of yoga and dancing, then the structure and organisation of business.” “I love that my clients are from 20 different countries. With the internet we can connect all over the world. The online world is so noisy and so when I took my work online 9 years ago, it changed my business.”

Take 30 minutes every Sunday night for your week’s action plan. Have a short and simple morning ritual to connect to what you want and need. Niche down to a few things that you really stand for. Be authentic and vulnerable, but you don’t need to over share to get followers. To stand out authentically, create a tribe and get REALLY clear on what you are standing for. Never share while you’re still learning a lesson. If you wait until you’ve come through the other side, you can share it from a clear perspective. Teach after you’ve learned. It’s ok to ask for help, it doesn’t mean you’re not good enough or weak. Asking for help is a valuable tool. “My purpose is around dance and to help people who don’t feel like they can dance. My other purpose is to share with people that you can have balance in your life. You can have both. It’s not an illusion. True soulful success is when your business works and your life works. It’s not an either/or world.” https://vimeo.com/388087212 www.carmenmarshall.com

How

ALIGNED ACTION WILL GROW A BUSINESS FASTER THAN BUSYNESS BY NERIDA WEAVER

Can I tell you a secret? When I started my first business (many years ago!) I associated my level of busyness with the success of my business. But as the years passed I came to the realisation that in fact, busyness was the very thing that was stifling the growth of my business. Busyness is a way to avoid the tasks we don’t like or that take us out of our comfort zone. Busyness is a way we can tell ourselves how hard we’re working while still hiding from the actions that would in fact create the biggest personal and business growth. Even today, after nearly 20 years in business I still find I can fall into this pattern! When I catch myself and look at what it is I’m actually avoiding, this is a usually sure indicator of what

24

I need to be doing! I also see this pattern play out the same way with the companies I consult with. With so many things needed to be done and as is the case with small business owner, wearing many hats – it’s very easy to get caught up in busyness without actually producing any measurable results. So the big question is what’s the solution to the busyness epidemic? The solution I’ve discovered best works for me and many of my clients is twofold. Firstly, slowing down to speed up. Yes it sounds counter intuitive and it’s particularly difficult for those of us who love to get and get things done and tick off our list!

However, slowing down and stepping outside our rush patterns, allows us to really tune into what is going on for us personally and for our business. It gives us space to consider how (and why) we’re doing things the way we are. To re-think where we could be more effective and course correct if required. To see how we could simplify and more importantly how can we create more impact with more ease. Which really leads us to the second part of the solution.

Taking aligned action (although it often pushes us out of our comfort zones) can create quantum leaps in our business that no amount of “busyness” could have ever achieved. When I heard one my favourite intuitive entrepreneurs Brigit Esselmont of Biddy Tarot announce 2020 as the Year Of Aligned Action, there was a deep resonance for me. The energy of aligned action had flooded into the last quarter of 2019 for me personally and like many others, entering this decade has felt like surfing a tidal wave of something way beyond possibility.

“Aligned action is the key.” 25

There is a potency to focused intention and energy that is undeniable. Taking aligned action is the ultimate way to tap into the powerful yang energy and move forward with confidence and ambition. Which, dear reader was the very inspiration for our upcoming Aligned Action 5 Day Challenge. Founder of The Beautiful You Coaching Academy, Julie Parker, passionately trains and supports heart-centered people to become life coaches. This modern day priestess with a focus on her Celtic, Balkan, Iberian and Greek lineage, is committed to contributing to a world where qualities of intuition, presence, social justice and service are honoured. The Editor in Chief of COACH Magazine, a published author and in demand speaker, Julie is the recipient of numerous leadership and women’s business awards and is also the CoFounder of Priestess Temple School and host of the top ranking Priestess Podcast. Soulful Business couldn’t wait to sit down with Julie to find out how she manages such a full plate and how she maintains balance. “Hand on my heart; I don’t balance things well all of the time. When you are a business woman with so many things on your plate, there will be times when things are off balanced, and that’s ok. Our pursuit of keeping things in

balance all of the time can sometimes contribute to the pressure, which throws us off balance,” Julie says. She is beautifully supported by a team, which enables her to hold space and do the work she does, she also contributes her ability to keep it all together with tapping into her exceptional “left-brain” skills. “This may not sound very sexy, but I am deeply planned and organised. I love flow, creativity, intuition, imagination all of those things, but the unsexy thing is, if I wasn’t as planned and organised in my business, I wouldn’t achieve what I do.” When we have are focused on achieving a goal, it’s so important understand your “why” (or your purpose). It will serve as a point of reference for all your actions and decisions and allow you to measure your progress and know when you have met your goals. We wanted to find out what drives Julie. “I feel as though my life and my business is a combo of ancient wisdom and lineage that comes through from the women in my family, through many generations, who have always had a 27

very strong heart driven purpose to service other people,” she says. The wisdom, which Julie carries, comes through her DNA, but in, a modern form. Her grandmother wasn’t a coach, but was known as a medicine woman, which has been passed through to Julie to become the teacher she is today. “I feel very proud to carry this. I have inherited the deepest passion for human potential from all of my ancestors. My why, is actually other peoples why and how they bring that to life.” Her desire to guide others on a massive scale, requires clever balancing of the two halves of the brain. “I work very much from my right side of the brain, tapping into love, care, and sympathy. I work chiefly with women and the divine feminine, but in saying that, I also think that left side of the brain is needed for balance. “I am very feminine driven, but to be sustainable and successful, I must be able to use my masculine brain; ordered, logical, structured etc. Finding that balance is so important.” Julie knows all too well that setting yourself up with a rigid routine to help balance things out, such as, ‘I must exercise at certain time, I must take a bath 3 times a week, I must meditate every morning,’ can actually hold you back from balance. Life doesn’t always go to plan and going with the flow is sometimes the thing that brings balance.

“Sometimes balance looks like a five minute cup of tea. And, if that’s all you get that day, maybe the following day you can aim for a walk or a lie down. We do our best. And understanding whatever balance happens to be for us, on that particular day, is so important.” Another aspect of creating a thriving soulful business is to understand the role that failure plays in your success. Julie says that failure can emerge our biggest wins, bring growth and, most importantly, build resilience. “We are not broken. We are all whole, but we are also all healing at the same time. Our wounds from childhood, our ego, our fears, anxieties and yes, overwhelm can sometimes cause us to misstep or fail at something. These things will happen. This is life, it’s normal and it’s part of the business life,” says Julie.

“Heart driven business owners need resiliency. If you’re not tested and you’re not putting yourself out there in a way where things are not working or need tweaking, then you’re not putting yourself out there enough. “If everything is always vanilla, you are only extending yourself so far. That’s fine in the beginning to help you gain your confidence, but eventually, you are going to have to put yourself out there more.” Beautiful You Coaching Academy academy leads people into their coaching destiny. This is Julie’s core business with over 1400 coaches, all over the world, and although this is her passion, she explores a more spiritual journey with The Priestess Temple School and Priestess Podcast. “These have come from my own awakening. I was drawn to have conversations with people, mostly women, and I wanted to put it out there for everyone to learn from on a podcast. Although I’ve only been talking about being a priestess of my life for 4 or 5 years, I really have been one all my life - we just didn’t have the language. For such a long time, it wasn’t safe for women to talk about their spirituality in that way. It’s a reclaiming.” A priestess is a sacred leader that opens and holds space for others to explore their divinity. Julie realizes that connection with spirit through the divine is going to be different for everyone. “There’s no right or wrong. This is one of the great paths of spirit. Tolerance is

something we all need to work on and understand that everyone’s paths are different and what is right for them is right for them, just as what is right for us is right for us.” When people feel that spiritual calling to help others, her programs nurture and support them toward their pathway. This varies from person to person; depending on their qualifications, experience and skills, of course, but Julie has learned what it takes to coach others. “No matter where someone starts from, the first thing you need to do to open up your pathway to being a coach is that you have to commit wholeheartedly to doing everything you possibly can to becoming the very best coach you can be. You must commit to the art, skill and craft of coaching. If you don’t know what that is, you have to find the right books, coaches and course to make that happen,” she says. “You can have the fanciest website, the most wonderful network, hot social media, but if you are not good at what you do, it’s all for nothing. The very best coaches in my experience build their practice through word of mouth. The next client always knows a current client.” “You must ask yourself, how do I become the very best at this, I possibly can be? The rest will fall into place.” “A coaches job is to ask powerful searing questions that helps them to understand that they are sovereign, that they are their own best friend. It is about self actualisation.” juliesuzanneparker.com
