Deer are opportunists who will no doubt see your garden as a salad bar ripe with all of their favorite foods. As housing developments continue to encroach on the natural habitats of deer and other animals, these animals are becoming more visible. Deer may become accustomed to the “easy pickings” they find in neighborhood yards.

Raising a child is an expensive endeavor, one that couples must start preparing for the moment they learn a baby is on the way, if not earlier. Expecting parents likely know their lives are about to change, and those changes must extend to their finances.

Give a room a new look without breaking the bank Redecorating a room or an entire house can change the entire feel of the space dramatically. Changing elements in a room does not have to be expensive. A few updated pieces or accessories can give a room an entirely new look without breaking your bank account.

Slipcovers Slipcovers are no longer the shapeless sacks they once were, they now come in all different price points. Spending a little more can mean getting a style that is elasticized or form-fitting, it’s a simple way to cover up an outdated style of sofa fabric or a chair. They also protect new couches from damage when there are children or pets in the home. To get the right slipcover, measure the piece of furniture you intend to cover. Without the correct fit, even a well-crafted slipcover can look awkward and cheap. Pay attention to the material of the slipcover, so you know it will be durable and thick enough to cover an existing sofa fabric pattern. Knobs & Pulls Breathe new life into older furniture by changing the knobs, Paint or Stain draw pulls, and handles. Many Painting a room’s walls times furniture comes with standard a different color can provide brass knobs that can look dated over time. immediate results. But furniture also Using sleeker, more streamlined knobs can can be painted and stained. Many times make traditional furniture look more modern. older furniture is made from quality wood, Changing pulls from metal to wood can make not the type of composite or pressboard a room look more earthy or country. Home wood of some less expensive furniture improvement stores and accessory retailers options. That means that finishes can be stock a wide variety of handles and knobs stripped and replaced with new stains. Turn that can transform just about any piece of a dated dresser into something that looks furniture. What cannot be found brand new with a new stain color or a in a store can most likely be coat of paint. Think about painting purchased online. or staining using foam sponges to reduce the appearance of brush lines. Bare Minimum Sometimes less is more, and this can also pertain to home decorating. Revamping a room can be done by subtraction as well as addition. Homeowners can explore the option of taking out a piece of furniture that may be cumbersome and blocking foot traffic. Removing knickknacks from shelves and thinning out the use of collectibles can make a room more airy and inviting. Before money is spent on changing furniture or accessories, people can look into what they can remove from the room to freshen it up.

Accessories Swapping out curtains, throw pillows and even wall art can easily and often inexpensively transform the look of a room. Homeowners can purchase accessories with bright colors that add a pop of brightness throughout the room & can provide a pick-me-up from neutral tones. Older lamps can be given a new look just by replacing lamp shades. There are many affordable options at discount stores and major retailers. Area rugs can also transform a room with little effort. Bring in a new color scheme with a different patterned rug and carry the pattern to stairways with runners.

Q

: My apartment has this cool original wood floor made up of wide pine planks. They’re painted over, so scratches haven’t been a problem. But there are a few spots where heavy furniture or dropped items dinged and dented the wood. Is there a quick way to repair these spots? -- Carla in Taunton, Mass.

A

: There’s an interesting fix you can try, using a clothes iron and a damp towel to try and bring up the dent. Because the dent is a compression of the wood, using dampness and heat may help the wood to expand and minimize the dent. This technique is not one that I would recommend for floors with a heavy coat of wax (as some older floors do), because the heat may discolor the finish, but since your wood floor has just a coat or two of paint, you shouldn’t have much of a problem. However, the paint may bubble or crack due to the initial damage and the expansion of the wood, so have some matching paint handy in order to touch up the area afterward. (As always, test a less-conspicuous area of the floor before making the repair.) First, dab the dent with a wet rag to soak the wood a bit. Wait a couple of minutes. While you’re waiting, fill the reservoir of your clothes iron and turn it on high, with full steam setting. Once the iron is hot, place a damp towel over the dent. Place the iron atop the towel, holding it directly over the dented area and trying to avoid the surrounding floor. Move the iron in a circular pattern while applying full steam, for about three minutes. Lift the towel to check your results. If the dent appears to be less deep, reapply the iron for a minute or so, checking each time until the dent is almost level with the rest of the floor. Once the area has cooled, repair the cracked or bubbling paint over the dent. Sand away the damaged paint, wipe clean with a damp cloth, and touch up the spot with matching paint. 12

Understanding Heat E xhaustion & Heat Stroke Summer is a season best spent outdoors, and many people anxiously await their opportunity to soak up some sun in the warm, summer air. But the summer heat can be relentless, posing a potentially significant threat to those who aren't careful when the dog days of summer arrive. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are two of the biggest concerns for those spending time under the summer sun. Differentiating between the two and understanding the causes and symptoms of each can help revelers survive the summer heat.

might be able to work in the garden in late spring and feel no ill effects. However, once summer arrives with its humidity and higher temperatures, those same gardeners are not accustomed to such conditions and might develop heat exhaustion as a result. Especially humid days make it difficult for the body to properly evaporate sweat, and the body will lose fluids and electrolytes. As this is happening, people who do not adequately replace those lost fluids are more likely to suffer from heat exhaustion.

What is heat exhaustion? Those who work or exercise in humid or hot conditions might have experienced some level of heat exhaustion. When a person is suffering from heat exhaustion, their body is losing its fluids through sweat, and that loss causes dehydration. The body will also overheat, with its temperature rising as high 104° F.

What causes heat stroke? Unlike heat exhaustion, which is largely caused by external conditions, heat stroke can result from an existing medical condition or medications. People with certain conditions or on medications that hinder the body's ability to sweat may be predisposed to heat stroke because their cooling mechanisms are already impaired or compromised. But heat stroke can also be caused by anyone exerting themselves in a hot environment, even if those people do not have a preexisting medical condition.

What is heat stroke? Heat stroke can be life-threatening. When a person is experiencing heat stroke, his or her body's cooling system stops working, and the body's temperature can rise to 105 F or higher. The cooling system is controlled by the brain, so heat stroke can even damage the brain and/or additional internal organs. What causes heat exhaustion? Many people who suffer from heat exhaustion are not used to exercising or working in hot or humid environments, an unfamiliarity that makes them susceptible to heat exhaustion. Gardeners, for example, 18

www.REALIVINGWY.com

What are the symptoms of heat exhaustion? Heat exhaustion symptoms vary but can include: • sweating profusely • feelings of dizziness • muscle cramps or pains • fainting • dark-colored urine (dehydration) • nausea • pale skin • rapid heartbeat • headache

July 2013

What are the symptoms of heat stroke? A body temperature of 105° F or above is a telltale indicator of heat stroke, but additional symptoms may include: • throbbing headache • flushed, hot and dry skin • slightly elevated blood pressure • dizziness and light-headedness • nausea and vomiting • rapid, shallow breathing • lack of sweating despite the heat • rapid heartbeat that is strong or weak • unconsciousness What do I do if I suspect I am suffering from heat exhaustion? If heat exhaustion is suspected, get out of the heat immediately. Ideally go into an air-conditioned room or under a tree in the shade if that's the only option. Call a doctor if you cannot keep fluids down or if you seem incoherent. Those who can keep fluids down should drink plenty of noncaffeinated and nonalcoholic beverages, and remove any tight or unnecessary clothing. In addition, take a cool shower or bath, but ideally only do so if someone is around to monitor you. What should I do if I suspect I am suffering from heat stroke? Heat stroke is potentially lifethreatening, so immediately dial 911 if you feel you have heat stroke. If you suspect someone else has heat stroke, administer some first aid while waiting for an ambulance to arrive. Move the person to an airconditioned room, and try to get his or her body temperature down to a more manageable 101° F or 102° F. Wet the person's skin and apply ice packs to the armpits, groin, neck, and back, as these areas have an abundance of blood vessels close to the skin, and cooling them can help lower body temperature. ∑

Spirit of the Hills Wildlife Sanctuary was founded in 1999 by its Director, Michael Welchynski, to provide a permanent home for unwanted, neglected and abused animals.

Located in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, the Sanctuary sits on 200 acres of rocky, forested terrain. It is currently home to over 300 animals of 40 different species. Coming to the Sanctuary from South Dakota and its five neighboring states, many of the residents at the Sanctuary were injured or orphaned in the wild (at the hands of people) or have been rescued from illegal breeding operations, fur farms, irresponsible “pet” owners and the entertainment industry. The Sanctuary provides a lifelong home for these animals, free from further abuse and exploitation. Guided walking tours* are offered from June 1 through Labor Day, Tuesday– Saturday at 8:30 and 10 a.m. and Sunday at 2pm only. Closed on Mondays (these tour times are when the animals are most active.) *EVERYONE VISITING MUST BE WITH A GUIDED TOUR* (due to regulations anyone visiting the sanctuary has to be with a guide) You don’t need to call to reserve a tour time. Financial Pointers for Expecting Parents

Couples expecting their first child often find that the months leading up to the birth of the baby are an exciting time filled with anticipation. But those months are also a time for expectant parents to make some important decisions regarding their finances. Raising a child is an expensive endeavor, one that couples must start preparing for the moment they learn a baby is on the way, if not earlier. Expecting parents likely know their lives are about to change, and those changes must extend to their finances. The following are a few financial pointers for parents-to-be. Determine your necessary income. Many couples have hypothetical discussions regarding children and their finances, but until they receive the news that a baby is on the way, those conversations have a way of being put on the back burner. Now that a baby is on the way, couples need to revisit those discussions, and determining how much income they need is a great place to start. The dual-income household has become the norm in the 21st century, when the cost of living has skyrocketed. But couples must determine if it’s in the family’s best interest for both parents to keep working once their child is born. The cost of childcare is considerable, and it may be in a family’s best interest for just one parent to work until the child reaches school age. Consider your total income as well as your financial obligations (i.e., mortgage, car payments, etc.) and then shop around for the cost of childcare. If it makes more sense to 22

www.REALIVINGWY.com

become a single-income household, even if it’s just for a few years, then you will have another important decision to make. Determine who is staying home. Couples who have decided that it’s in their best interests to become a singleincome household once their child is born must decide who will be staying home and who will continue working. It’s easy to say the parent who is earning the most should continue working, but that decision is not so black and white. Consider the cost of healthcare offered by each of your employers. Some healthcare plans are significantly more affordable than others, and this might weigh heavily on your decision, especially if both parents are earning relatively similar incomes. Another thing to consider is each of your opportunities for advancement at your current company and within your field. Earning potential should factor heavily into the decision as to which parent will continue working, especially if you plan to have another child down the road. The conversation as to who will continue working should be treated delicately. Discuss your housing needs. Couples who are expecting a child often feel this is a great time to abandon apartment living and buy a home of their own. But chances are you can comfortably manage to live in your apartment for a few more years after your child is born. Those extra years of apartment living can give you the chance to save more money so you can afford a nicer home in a better neighborhood that boasts better schools. Or apartment living for a few more

July 2013

years may give you more time to save and place a larger down payment on your home down the road. The larger the initial down payment, the lower your monthly mortgage payment, so it might be in your best interest to squirrel away a few more dollars before you go house hunting. Establish a financial safety net. Many financial advisors suggest both singles and couples have between three to six months’ income saved in case of emergency, such as a layoff or an accident that prevents you from working. This is especially important for expecting couples, who will soon have an additional mouth to feed. This safety net should be big enough so you can comfortably pay all of your bills, including those for housing, transportation and food, for three to six months. If saving that amount of money is not realistic, save as much as possible and continue to do so once your child is born. Purchase life insurance. Life insurance is perhaps the most important purchase expectant couples can make once they learn a baby is on the way. It’s understandable if young couples without children have no life insurance, but that child on the way will be relying on his or her parents for financial support for at least the next 18 years. Life insurance ensures you can provide that support even if something happens to both you and your spouse. The months leading up to the birth of a child is an exciting time for the expecting parents, but it’s also a time to make some important financial decisions. ∑

Residential sales showed a slight decline in total sales and volume in the 1st half of the year for 2013. The market has been steady throughout the 2nd quarter and interest rates held at all-time lows. The average sales price was down slightly; however on the upside, the average days on market were down, meaning it’s taking less time to sell the average home. The market could be on the upswing as the construction season hits and new developments begin to take off. The commercial market closed the first half of the year with less volume but higher average prices. There still hasn’t been an overwhelming amount of sales in this market; however, the market has been a bit slow as compared to 2012. From the data and numbers it could be inferred that the Gillette market is down;

however, I believe due to the amount of new construction we will see those numbers increase. There is some uncertainty due to slight increases in interest rates. This may or may not have a direct effect in the 3rd quarter but may lean more towards the 4th quarter or even 2014. Judging by the average list price to sales price, sellers are getting fair market for properties priced competitively. As energy demand goes, so goes our market. ∑

Simple ways to ease the ‘ouch’

Sunblock - and its adequate reapplication - is one of the single most effective ways to prevent sunburn and a host of sunrelated maladies. Despite the warnings of skin cancer and ailments related to the sun, people succumb to sunburn year after year. The results can be quite painful. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, getting sunburned even once can make a person more likely to get skin cancer. Though it can be that simple to increase risk for skin cancer, there's actually quite a lot going on behind the scenes when a person gets a sunburn. The very outer layer of the epidermis, or the outsidemost skin, is made up of dead skin cells. Directly below them are living skin cells that can be damaged when ultraviolet light from the sun penetrates these living cells and eventually kills them off. Once the body senses the dead cells, the immune system springs into action. White blood cells are sent to the area to repair damage, which involves increased blood flow. This blood flow makes the skin red and warm. Furthermore, the damaged skin cells send out chemical messengers that activate pain receptors. This is why sunburned skin is red, warm and painful. There are different remedies for alleviating the pain associated with sunburn. While there are some over-thecounter analgesics that will temporarily numb pain, some of the best treatments are simple and natural. • Cool water baths and brief showers can reduce the temperature of the skin. • Aloe gels often soothe and cool. It is believed that aloe has anti-inflammatory properties.

July 2013

• Some say that white vinegar can reduce pain and inflammation when sprayed on the affected area or used in compresses. • Sunburned skin is often dry and chapped. A moisturizer, such as cocoa butter, can help minimize irritation. • It's important to remain hydrated because damaged skin may not be as effective in locking moisture inside. Plus, the body needs food and water to fuel the repair of sunburned skin. The best remedy for sunburn is to avoid it at all costs. Wearing sunblock, a wide-brimmed hat, UV-protection clothing, and sunglasses and avoiding the sun during peak hours are ways to remain comfortable and healthy. ∑

s t ’ n o D Dos & s k r o w e r for Fi

As the mercury rises, the parties and festivities that have come to signify summer excite revelers far and wide. Summer has become the season of pool parties, trips to the beach, barbecues, and, of course, fireworks. Love it or hate it, warm weather seems to beckon neighbors out of hibernation and incites a desire to set things on fire. When cooking over an open flame doesn't satisfy that desire, many take to shooting off bottle rockets and whistlers. But fireworks can be dangerous, and not everyone is equipped or legally allowed to ignite fireworks. Therefore, to avoid potentially dangerous injuries, fines or arrests, it pays to follow these fireworks dos and don'ts. DO find out if fireworks are legal in your area. If you have to travel over state lines or into another country to purchase fireworks, there is a good chance you are not allowed to use fireworks in your community. There are many regulations regarding the sale, transport and use of fireworks, so be sure you're not breaking any laws before buying any fireworks.

34

www.REALIVINGWY.com

DON'T buy fireworks from just anyone. You want to ensure you are purchasing them from a reputable retailer of legal fireworks. DO check any safety guidelines and warnings on the wrapper of the fireworks before lighting them. DON'T light fireworks near people, trees, homes, or any combustible materials. DO keep a fire extinguisher or water hose nearby in the event of a fire. The National Fire Prevention Association notes that the Fourth of July features more reported fires than any other day of the year. DON'T forget that sparklers and firecrackers are no safer than other types of fireworks. The tip of a sparkler burns at a temperature of more than 1200° F, which is hot enough to cause third-degree burns and is hotter than the temperature it takes to melt glass. DO leave fireworks to the professionals to avoid injury or fire. DON'T light more than one firework at a time. DO wait 15 to 20 minutes after lighting a firework to see if it has ignited. If not, dump the firework in a bucket of water and move on to a fresh firework. DON'T let small children handle and light fireworks. DO make every attempt not to store fireworks. If you purchase them, use them all up. However, a cool, out-of-the-way place may suffice for a day or so.

July 2013

DON'T have any part of your body over the firework when lighting it. Try to use a lit stick or butane lighter to keep as far away as possible. DO say no to alcoholic beverages when lighting fireworks. Your perception and dexterity can be compromised by alcohol. DON'T shoot fireworks off in windy conditions. Otherwise, make sure the prevailing wind is blowing away from the audience. DO wear eye protection when lighting fireworks. DON'T shoot fireworks off of uneven ground. To ensure stability, always light them on a hard, flat and level surface. DO use common sense at all times when in the presence of fireworks. DON'T assume pets and children will enjoy the loud noises. Make accommodations for a quiet respite. DO make sure spectators keep their distance. They should be 25 to 40 feet away from groundbased items and even further for aerial products. Fireworks can be beautiful to watch and often signify special moments and celebrations. Safety should always be on the minds of people spending time around fireworks. ďż˝

s t i b a H y t u a e B to Avoid . . . Looking good and feeling healthy are top priorities for many women. In addition to spending hours researching the latest beauty regimens and spending thousands on products that promise everything from turning back the hands of time to making hair thicker and more resilient, women could be engaging in a few habits that may be doing more harm than good. As cosmetic procedures and beauty trends are passed down from generation to generation, some women may be unsure what is best for them and which habits need tweaking.

Wrapping wet hair in a towel turban: Gathering wet locks together and twisting them into a towel is a recipe for damage and breakage. Wet hair is more delicate than dry hair, and it can stretch or break more easily. Gently squeeze hair dry with the towel and then use a detangling spray to make it easier to comb out knots. Putting hair too tightly in elastics and wearing them for long periods of time can result in thinning of the hair or a condition known as: traction alopecia. Layering products: You may have a relative beauty arsenal tucked into your medicine cabinet, but while these products may work well on their own, there is no way to know how they will interact. Less is more when using different beauty serums. Experiment with each item separately to gauge skin reaction and if an allergy is present. ∑

Road Trippin’ in As you’re leaving South Dakota coming into Northeastern Wyoming you’ll be on Interstate 90 (I-90). The first thing you see when you cross the state line into Wyoming is a sign that welcomes you. As well as having the Wyoming logo of a bronco rider on a bucking horse, you’ll see the words “Wyoming - Like No Place on Earth” and you can take that literally. As you pass the sign into Wyoming you will see the rolling hills and partial flatlands, plus the remnants of the Black Hills. The first little town you come to is Beulah; a small town of only a couple hundred, a usually quiet and mild town, unless of course you’re hitting it during the Sturgis Bike Week as hundreds of thousands of bikers converge on Northeast Wyoming and Northwest South Dakota, then it transforms Beulah into a hub of bikers and excitement. The other great thing about Beulah is if you turn South at the Beulah exit and go approximately 7 to 10 miles you’ll hit historic Ranch “A”. Here is where the infamous “Mid West Bank Robbers” such as Al Capone and the like would come to cool off and stay out of the public eye. Ranch “A” is a beautiful log building full of luxuries and amenities. Quite a fancy place considering the time it was built. From there you’ll venture West on

© John Tieman 2013

I-90 and just 6 miles out of Beulah, you’ll see the Vore Buffalo Jump on the North side of I-90, a prehistoric site used by countless Indian tribes to hunt buffalo over the last 10,000 years. It’s amazing just how much history has taken place in this part of the country. Next stop going west: Sundance. Sundance, you guessed it, it’s where the Sundance Kid got his name. The Sundance Kid rode with Butch Cassidy and both were notorious train and bank robbers that haunted the West during the Wild West days. Sundance isn’t very big, but it’s a good stop for the museum and a break from driving. From Sundance you can turn North and swing up to Devils Tower National Monument, not only famous for being the first National Monument in America but also featured in the science fiction movie: “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”. Devils Tower offers KOA camping and a nice park full of wildlife and beautiful scenery. This area of Wyoming is a recommended stop for all travelers. Leaving Sundance you can hang a left and go South heading towards 4 Corners and Newcastle, Wyoming. 4 Corners is at the edge of the Black Hills and if you head back Northeast you’ll go thru Spearfish Canyon with its entire majestic splendor. If you continue South, just before Newcastle, you will come across the valley that General Custer followed

n NE Wyoming on his way to the Little Big Horn in Montana. Just South of Newcastle are the Thunder Basin National Grasslands with miles of flat grasslands where great herds of bison roamed in centuries past. Back on I-90 going West from Sundance, the next point you’ll cross is full of fossils and prehistoric history all the way to Inyan Kara, which has large significant spiritual history for many tribes of Native Americans, as well signs of dinosaur inhabitant. Once in the area of Inyan Kara you’ll marvel at the beautiful countryside on the western fringes of the Black Hills. This area is also teaming with wildlife: mule deer, white tail deer, antelope and many birds of prey. Onward West on I-90 just 16 or 17 miles further is Moorcroft, Wyoming. A quaint little ranch community, Moorcroft is steadily growing as Northeast Wyoming grows rapidly with coal and coal bed methane wells, not to mention the vast oil production that takes place all over Wyoming. A right turn takes you to Devils Tower National Monument, or go South

and head back to Newcastle and the Grasslands. Moorcroft has history, great hospitality and a good truck stop for rest and refreshments. Just 25 more miles on I-90 and you’re in Gillette, Wyoming, one of the largest cities in Wyoming. Gillette is where you’ll find everything from ranching to coal mining, oil production and more. The largest coal seam of low sulfur coal goes right through Gillette, and you can see that with all the coal production that takes place on every side of the city. A large coal mine, Wyodak Coal Mine, is at the Eastern edge of Gillette, where you can see what an open pit coal mine looks like from your car. Wyodak is used just for the purpose of producing power for the Black Hills. The other mines around Gillette ship most of their product to other states for heat and power production. The Visitor Center, located in the center of Gillette just off Exit 126 at the Southwest corner of I-90 and Hwy 59, has literature and information on tours and inspections of the various mines around Gillette. Once again you’ll see wild game

along the roads and interstates in and around Gillette, so you will want to keep a good look out because it is not unusual to see them on the roads. Another thing to be aware of in and around Northeast Wyoming is the fact that there is open range. Not on the interstate, but on many of the rural roads in the counties. Open range is when local ranchers allow their cattle to roam free and graze. Wire fences and cattle guards that the cattle will not cross, section off these areas, which only keep them in a certain area but can still cross roads within that area. You can head South out of Gillette on Hwy 59 and it will take you to Wright and Douglas, Wyoming, and straight down to Colorado, if that’s your destination. Another southbound route out of Gillette is Hwy 50, which will take you to Midwest and Edgerton where the Continued on page 52

Deer-Proofing Your Garden

Creating a beautiful and bountiful garden is a popular pastime for people all across the country. It is important to keep in mind that aesthetically appealing plants may be appetizing to area wildlife, including deer. Those who do not want their gardens to turn into all-you-can-eat buffets for deer, rabbits and other wild animals can take a more proactive approach to gardening. Deer are opportunists who will no doubt see your garden as a salad bar ripe with all of their favorite foods. As housing developments continue to encroach on the natural habitats of deer and other animals, these animals are becoming more visible. Deer may not be able to forage for food effectively in their smaller, natural surroundings, or they may become accustomed to the “easy pickings” they find in neighborhood yards. Either way, you may encounter a deer in or around your area. Keeping deer at bay involves some work and maintenance on the part of a homeowner. There are safe and humane methods to repelling deer, or at least blocking access to the plants worth protecting. Here are some ways to deerproof a garden. Fence It Fences are one way to deter deer from entering a yard and dining on your garden. Keep in mind that deer can jump fences that are quite tall, but they have to be especially motivated to jump an eight-foottall fence. Still, they tend to be weary about scaling a fence when they cannot see what is on the other side. Therefore, if you are fencing out deer, choose a fence that camouflages the garden well and completely encloses the area to be protected. If you do not want the fence to be solid, consider putting stakes or thorny plants within the garden so that the deer will hesitate to jump into the garden. Scare Them Deer are naturally skittish around people, but over time they can become quite complacent around human beings. Once a deer decides that something will not present a threat, the deer can adapt to its presence.

Anna Achtziger ~ Alexanna ~ As a retired acupuncture practitioner, I became interested in taking a poke at a different calling. Owning Alexanna has truly allowed me the opportunity of channeling my love of nature and wearable art. A self professed lifelong “rockaholic” I bring that passion, along with essences of both my Native American and Celtic heritage, to distinctive beadwork artistry. I allow the stones I select to be highlighted by the threading, the patterns, and the beading designed for each piece.

Tricia Sheele

This passion applies, as well, to my unique wood turned hollow vessels. With an intrinsic ardor for the land and nature at large, I seek individual pieces of wood, many of which are indigenous to the area of the Black Hills. My wood has been featured in multiple magazines and trade articles. I also continually enjoy exploring and mastering new methods and techniques and then bringing them each to one of a kind pieces. You can view some of Anna’s work at www.artistsoftheblackhills.org “I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Horses have always been my inspiration. I believe it comes from not having access to them as a child. They became something ethereal and unattainable. They were glorious gods that shimmered in the sun and smelled of heaven. I started drawing them to surround myself with horses.

I strive to capture the joy that they embody in my work. Bright colors and happily dancing patterns swirl in the form of the horse. I strive for a correct horse that will please a very particular horse lover and still give pleasure to an art lover. I work in a variety of media but I am always a painter at heart. living in yesteryear

the

Americans are unique in all the world because we stand ready and willing to fight for our way of life. It has never mattered where the threat comes from or who the enemy is, even when that enemy is another American. This unmatched quality not only ignited the American Civil War between North and South, but also a

Johnson County War

number of less-publicized civil wars in the wide-open West, including Wyoming’s Johnson County War. In the late 1800’s, Wyoming’s economy was largely given over to raising livestock. Stockgrowers grazed vast unsegregated herds over boundless tracts of public land, which were richer in area than nutritional value due to the sparseness of the grass. Because the threats to their herds were the same for everyone, success depended on mutual cooperation and resource sharing. And so long as everyone profited, harmony prevailed on the open, self-regulated Wyoming frontier. But as time went by, immigration to Wyoming increased, putting severe pressure on shared resources such as water and grass. Fluctuating beef prices and occasionally disastrous winters also squeezed profit margins periodically. The well-financed and established ranchers of Southeastern Wyoming responded by increasing their land holdings and herds, incorporating their operations, and advancing their common interests through collective organizations such as the Wyoming Stock Growers Association (WSGA). This left the cash strapped smallscale stockgrowers and immigrants operating in Northeastern Wyoming’s Johnson County to compete individually with the bigger and better-organized WSGA ranchers for ever-scarcer public resources. Once again, trouble was brewing between North and South, but this time in the newly formed state of Wyoming. After the harsh winter of 1886, which decimated herds and drove feed prices through the roof, many of Johnson County’s small-timers went belly-up. The stockgrowers who survived allegedly did so by replenishing their herds with cattle appropriated from WSGA herds. In addition, a band of outlaws known as

48

www.REALIVINGWY.com

by Robert Bennett

the “Hole-in-the-Wall Gang”, whose members were probably drawn from the recently bankrupt, began rustling cattle from WSGA herds grazing in the North and selling them to local stockgrowers. Taking matters into their own hands, WSGA ranchers launched a campaign to drive Johnson County stockgrowers out of business and cement their control over Wyoming’s cattle industry. While their tactics were usually not legitimate, they were organized, well conceived and ruthlessly carried out. As the Two-Bar Ranch was buying up land fronting the Chugwater River and cutting off water access to large tracts of public grazing land in Johnson County, the WSGA was choking off the work supply by blacklisting cowboys who rode for non-WSGA-member stockgrowers. Meanwhile, WSGA riders seized and hanged two leading Johnson County citizens without a trial, claiming that the victims, Jim Averell and his wife Ella Watson, were notorious rustlers.

July 2013

Unless they organized, Johnson County’s independent stockgrowers knew they would eventually succumb to the WSGA’s campaign of terror. So in 1891, they founded the Northern Wyoming Farmers & Stock Growers Association and entrusted its leadership to a local rancher by the name of Nate Champion, whose history of steadfast resistance to the WSGA and irresistible surname ensured his election to this unhealthy post. Realizing that their recently organized enemies could no longer be picked off one at a time, the WSGA recruited an army of mercenary gunfighters from Texas and Wyoming. Composing over 50 men, a battlefield physician and two reporters, the heavily armed WSGA force rolled into Johnson County in April 1892. Their original plan was to launch a surprise attack on Buffalo, the seat ofJohnson County’s government, and kill the opposition’s front men, including the county Sheriff, Red Angus, three county commissioners,

and Nate Champion. Then, after removing the opposition’s front men, they would install a county government friendly to WSGA interests and hang around long enough to remove any further dissenters. But even the best battle plans invariably fall apart as soon as the troops take the field. An unexpected Northeast Wyoming blizzard and a falling among the army’s leadership put the WSGA expedition two days behind schedule. Finding itself closer to Nate Champion’s KC Ranch than Buffalo, and having received misinformation from one of Champion’s old enemies that he was indeed there together with 14 other suspected rustlers, the WSGA army decided to eliminate Champion first and then invade Buffalo. On the morning of April 9, 1892, the heroic but luckless Nate Champion found his cabin surrounded by the WSGA force. Nick Ray, a comrade in arms who he had been planning to breakfast with, had just been shot while on a trip to the water pump and was bleeding out on his cabin floor. Knowing his doom could be mere moments away, Champion fought bravely to keep his attackers at bay. But greater numbers eventually prevailed, and WSGA gunmen managed to creep close enough to the cabin to set it alight. With the cabin going up in flames, Champion had no choice but to break cover and make a run for it. He burst out the backdoor, guns blazing, and got maybe four steps from the inferno before unfriendly fire cut him to ribbons. There was, however, a silver lining to this ominous cloud. During the one-sided battle, Champion’s neighbors managed to get word of the attack to Buffalo and Red Angus. Champion’s intrepid resistance had afforded Angus enough time to raise a counter-force of 200 angry locals, who immediately set off to settle the score with the WSGA. The local militia quickly found the WSGA force, but they had taken up a daunting defensive position in the heavily fortified T A Ranch after having received news of the size and intentions of their pursuers. Angus ordered the T A Ranch encircled and a two-day standoff followed, with both sides exchanging shots but neither mounting an attack. Unknown to Angus, one of the men managed to sneak through the besieger’s undisciplined lines

and telegraph word of the siege to Wyoming governor Amos Barber in Cheyenne. Barber immediately telegraphed a plea for aid to Wyoming senators Carey and Warren in Washington D.C., who then passed the plea on to President William Harrison. Harrison, who had been dragged out of bed by the apprehensive Wyoming Senators, immediately approved federal intervention. Straight away, the War Department telegraphed orders to Fort McKinney, located just three miles west of Buffalo, instructing the 6th Cavalry to proceed with haste to the T A Ranch and take the WSGA force into custody. Take a moment and imagine the scene from the eyes of a WSGA gunman up from Texas, who has been promised a fat paycheck for shooting fish in a barrel. Only now you’re besieged and outnumbered, and nervously manning your position inside the T A ranch house. You peer out of a window and catch an unexpected and ominous sight - a mantlet is rolling towards you on wagon wheels, propelled by men with murder on their minds. You and your buddies squeeze off dozens of rounds into the mantlet, only to see the hot lead bury itself harmlessly in the soft pine planking. A few more yards and they’ll be close enough to fire the house; then you’re done for. A cold sweat breaks out on your forehead and begins oozing into your eyes. Your stomach is churning, and the dry biscuits and weak coffee you had for breakfast are doing their best to come back up. You begin praying fervently for your soul on the off chance that somebody up there is listening. A voice from behind the mantlet cries, “FIRE IN THE HOLE!”. No way you’re going to get out of this one alive, so you grip your rifle tightly, Sight it on the mantlet, and prepare to sell your life dearly. The guy next to you is thinking the same, and in a grim and determined southern drawl, says, “let’s show ‘em how Texans die” Inexplicably, the mantlet stops, and a long silence ensues. You can’t believe your eyes, so you rub the sweat out of them with your knuckles. Then you realize that you’ve been holding your breath for almost a minute and let it out in an explosive gasp. The men behind the mantle start screaming confused and frustrated curses back at their

own lines and at each other. Unable to resist your curiosity any longer, you bolt upright and poke your head out the window. And that’s when you hear it: a sound so angelically beautiful it couldn’t possibly have issued from a blast of human breath through a brass tube. But it did, because you hear that bugle repeat its sweet, sweet music. Oh yes, sweet Jesus, the cavalry has come to the rescue. Just in the knick of time did the 6th Cavalry arrive on the scene and snatch the invader’s bacon out of the fire. After tense negotiations between Major Wolcott, the WSGA army’s leader, Sheriff Angus of the Johnson County militia, and Colonel Van Hom of the 6th Cavalry, the WGSA men were taken into custody and marched back to Fort McKinney to await trail. At this point our story takes a decidedly modern turn and becomes less like a Louis Lamoure western and more like a political-legal thriller. Yep, you guessed it: enter the corrupt lawyers and politicians. Remember Wyoming governor Barber’s suspiciously urgent plea to the federal government for armed intervention? It’s alleged that he and other state politicians in Cheyenne had not only known about the WSGA’s plans before April 1892, but had also approved them; it just wouldn’t do for this to come out in open court. So Cheyenne applied political pressure and got the state courts to transfer the case against the WSGA henchmen from Buffalo to Laramie. Unfortunately, Wyoming law required Johnson County to fund the trial, including the cost of feeding and housing the very men who had planned to murder several of its citizens and overthrow its government. Defense lawyers managed to delay the trial long enough to drive Johnson county into bankruptcy. Unable to continue due to lack of funds, the Laramie court dismissed the case again the invaders before it ever came to trial. Nate Champion and Nick Ray’s murderers walked away free men. Emotions ran high for many years following the ‘Johnson County Cattle War’ as some viewed the large and wealthy ranchers as heroes who took justice into their own hands in order to defend their rights, while others saw the WSGA as heavy-handed vigilantes running roughshod over the law of the land.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! Answer on page 56
