t's been another exciting month in Phuket. We've had the usual relaxing beach activities that locals and tourists have come to expect and everybody is ready for the happy season. The worst of the weather is behind us and clear, sunny skies lie ahead. Plenty of great events lie ahead too. In the coming month Seduction Nightclub will be hosting a number of fun-filled functions that will surely wow everyone on the island. Phuket Night Run7th of November
Exercise is important, but running through the day in Phuket can be quite tiresome due to the tropical weather. Running at night is much better, so why not take part in the Phuket Night Run? There are three race types to choose from, a small fun run of 3.7 Km. Medium sized runs at 5.6km and 8.5 and a mini marathon at 11.4 km. With something for everyone, it's sure to be fun for the whole family. It's also a great chance for people to get together and take a tour through Old Phuket.

Loy Krathong is one of Thailand's most cherished festivals. Whereas Songkran is all about having a wild, fun time, Loy Krathong is more subdued and peaceful. It is a time when people float lanterns into the sky and Krathongs out onto the rivers. Krathongs are homemade floats made from banana trees, leaves, flowers and other adornments such as candles. The ceremony symbolises the letting go of the previous year, it allows all your worries to float away. Phuket is a great place to experience the festival, as many lanterns can be seen floating over the ocean. A truly beautiful experience.

Loy Krathong25th of November Лой Кратонг – один из самых любимых праздников в Таиланде. В то время как Сонгкран наполнен весельем, Лой Кратонг – спокойный и очень трогательный ритуал. С 24 по 26 ноября люди запускают в небо китайские фонарики, и пускают в воду венки – кратонги. Их обычно делают из банановых деревьев, листьев, цветов, и венчает это маленькое великолепие зажженная свеча. Церемония символизирует уход прошлого года, вместе с венком должны уплыть все печали и волнения. На Пхукете особенно красиво празднуют Лой Кратонг, так как горящие фонарики улетают в небо прямо над океаном.

Thai Restaurant Etiquette How to Dine Thai Style?

eople do things differently all over the world. What some people find offensive, others find polite. These differences are what make life so interesting, but there are times when it's important to respect cultural differences and not make any social faux pas'. Thailand is a place of tolerance, but that doesn't mean that you should take advantage of the patience of Thai people. Wherever possible it is best to adhere to Thai etiquette, especially when dining.
If the check comes to you, pay for it, unless of course it's exorbitant. In Thai culture, the
check is given to the richest looking person at the table. Conversely, don't offer to pay if the check is given to someone else. Don't take too large a portion when dishes are handed around. Leave some for others. Finish everything on your plate, whether you liked it or not, it lets the chef know you enjoyed the meal. If there are old ladies in your midst, let them order for everyone, it's tradition. Wait until your host tells you to start. No one will mention it if you dig in before others, but they'll be thinking about it. If you're the one ordering, get a balance of sweet, sour, salty and spicy dishes. Thais always go for that balance. Don't leave your chopsticks in a bowl, for some reason it represents death and no one wants to be reminded of that when they're eating. Thai meals are always shared, so don't be possessive with your meal. In Thailand, forks are for shoveling food onto spoons, so don't use them to put food in your mouth. Don't expect a knife, most meals have been cut up to be bite size and spoons are usually used for cutting larger pieces. These are just a few tips for dining with Thai people. There are probably plenty more ways to do things wrong but most Thai people are too polite to tell you.

юди часто одни и те же вещи делают по-разному в разных странах мира. То, что где-то считается неприличным, другие найдут очень даже вежливым. Эти различия делают нашу жизнь интересной и забавной, но, конечно, важно знать о некоторых важных культурных различиях, чтобы не попасть впросак. Таиланд – очень толерантная страна, но лучше не испытывать терпение тайцев за столом. Соблюдайте их застольный этикет, и многие закрытые двери, к вашему удивлению, распахнуться для вас в тот же момент. Вот несколько советов, как правильно кушать по-тайски:
Если счет за ужин подали вам, заплатите по нему, если, конечно, там не сумма с четырьмя нулями. В тайской культуре счет преподносится человеку, который выглядит самым богатым за столом. Опять же, если счет подали кому-то другому, не предлагайте оплатить его. Не берите слишком большие порции с общей раздачи за столом. Оставьте и другим вкусненького. Обязательно доедайте все на своей тарелке, хотите вы этого или нет, ведь это позволяет шеф-повару понять, что вы получили удовольствие от приготовленной им еды. Если за столом есть тайские леди в возрасте, позвольте им заказать еду на всех. Это традиция! Подождите, пока хозяин не позволит начать трапезу. Никто не сделает вам замечания, но вот подумают о вас не очень хорошо все. Если вы заказываете еду в ресторане или кафе, соблюдайте баланс между сладкими, кислыми, солеными и острыми блюдами. Тайцы всегда придерживаются этого правила. Не оставляйте палочки для еды в тарелке, это символизирует смерть, и никому не будет приятно, если вы напомните за столом о бренности существования. Тайские застолья всегда сопровождаются угощением из общей тарелки. Не будьте ханжой, кушайте с удовольствием то, что подали всем. В Таиланде вилки – это лишь вспомогательный предмет, который всегда ассистирует ложке, не используйте вилку, чтобы класть себе лакомый кусочек в рот. Не ожидайте, что вам подадут нож в тайском ресторане. Большинство блюд подаются уже мелко нарезанными, так что ложки, по мнению тайцев, вполне достаточно. oy Krathong takes place in the evening of a full moon of the twelfth lunar month of the Thai calendar, which is usually in November. It is one of the most colourful and picturesque as well as meaningful festivals celebrated throughout Thailand. It is believed that the festival marked the end of the rice harvest season and to give thanks to the Water Goddess, Phra Mae Khongka, for her gifts and benevolence to the people, and to ask for forgiveness and blessing for all wrong doings for the year. The words "Loy Krathong" may sound unusual to you but the meaning is beautiful. "Loy" means float, and "Krathong" is a special Thai floating sculpture, vessel or basket which is elaborately decorated with folded banana leaves, flowers, incense stick and a candle in intricate towering designs. Very often, this is crafted in the shape of a lotus, an important religious symbol for the Thais. Traditionally these are made from a slice of a banana tree trunk. During festive day, you will find hundreds of Krathong being sold near the festivity areas. Some Thais even made these themselves to add special personal meaning to the festival. Throughout the country, where there is a stream, river, pond, sea and even swimming pool, as long as there is water, you will find hundreds of krathongs with their twinkling candles floating in the dark water, against a full bright moon. The visual effect, to say the least, is not only stunning, but beguiling and tranquil. Loy Krathong has an immensely personal meaning for me for it is also the festival of dreams and hope. On this night, as I place my flowers and candle on the krathong, I will recite a silent prayer and make my wishes before I launch it into the water. As it floats gently down the stream, I am also floating away all my anger, worldly troubles and negative feelings. A sense of calm, hope, peace and inner happiness descends upon me as I see my candle twinkling and slowly floating into the horizon... Yes, next year will be a year of luck, happiness, and good karma for me. That is what makes Loy Krathong so special to me. оябрь – это месяц самого красивого праздника в году, праздника уплывающих вдаль желаний и грез. Когда я думаю о Лой Кратонге, я вижу картину сотен огоньков, качающихся на воде. Каждый из них несет в себе молитвы и желания тех, кто опустил его в воду. Словосочетание «Лой Кратонг» может звучать для вас достаточно необычно, но его значение красивое и простое одновременно: «лой» значит «плывущий», а «кратонг» - это как раз та самая композиция из цветов и свечей, для нее в тайском языке есть свое особое словечко. Традиционный кратонг делается из пенька бананового дерева, который изысканно украшается скрученными банановыми листьями и цветами, чтобы получилось подобие башенки. Вы найдете сотни кратонгов, продающихся преддверие фестиваля повсюду. Люди верят, что Лой Кратонг – это способ попросить прощения и благословения у богини воды Пра Мае Конгка. BILL BARNETT’S ASIAN DREAMS Bill Barnett - CEO and founder of C9 Hotelworks What made you want to come to Asia?
It was an exotic and imaginary place, I had read about all my life. I was living in Hawaii and read a book about the disappearance of Michael Rockefeller in New Guinea. Suddenly I was captivated about moving to Papua New Guinea, exploring the wild places and jungles that I ended up doing and it was my gateway to a new life as an expatriate in Asia some thirty years ago.
As an American, what is the strangest thing you have come across in Asia?
My experience in post-war Vietnam. I was the first American hotelier to work in Vietnam after the war, in 1991. I managed a hotel in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and later in Hue. Many of my staff have been involved in the war and frankly speaking the kindness, openness and generosity of the Vietnamese could not have been more positive. Life has moved on for these people and I was happy to show them new ideas and help tourism come into the country at its developing stages. When I left Hue over one hundred people came to the airport and I can remember seeing them from the plane waving to me as we took off its etched in my memory to this day.
Why did you choose the name C9?
We are a hospitality and property business, so cloud nine came to mind, and C9 popped up, as a likely tag as that is where you go to sleep up there in cloud nine.
How does the Hotel business in Asia differ from the hotel business in Western countries?
Asia is the fastest growing hotel sector in the world; it is an exciting and dynamic marketplace, where there is opportunity like nowhere else in the world. Where else can you see so many projects you work on rise up before your very eyes? I love driving around Phuket and see projects like Andara, Point Yamu by Como, Phuket Pavilions, Mövenpick Karon, Laguna Village or countless others that we were involved in when they only existed in the developers minds.
What are your predictions for the hospitality market in Phuket? It is all about location and Phuket is such a central location to all of Asia and a crossroads from East to West. There is a strong service segment and while its inevitable the island will urbanize, as will Bali and so many other Asian leisure destinations it hold a strong appear with hotels, yachting, tourism and key demand generators like international schools, retail and a skilled business sector. I remain decidedly positive over Phuket’s future, it remains the place I most want to live in the world, where I house my business and have chosen to raise my family.
What advice would you give to future investors in Phuket?
What should they do and what shouldn’t they do? Take a long term view, come, and learn the market before jumping in and understand there are always niches that can prosper. Don’t follow the herd?

What is your favorite place to dine?
Siam Supper Club for dinner, it can’t get any better than Sean’s place and Catch or Bimi for sunset drinks, Surin Beach – you have to love it.
What kind of music do you like?
Rock and roll from the late 60s’ to early 70’s all great R and R came from that era, old Jazz, Contrane, Charlie Parker, and West Coast country, Graham Parsons, lets just say I have eclectic taste in music.
Are you a party guy?
Let’s just say in days past I have seen the sun come up many times. These days I tend to be getting up in instead of going to bed, as the rays of a new day comes up, funny how life evolves…
When you were young, who was your idol?
I read so much, be it Graham Greene, Hemingway of course, Joseph Conrad, offbeat writers like Richard Brautigan, Tom McGuane and of course Dr. Gonzo- Hunter S. Thompson. Travel and books framed much of my youth, so perhaps a yin to the yang of life.
What is the one thing you hate most in life?
Sitting on a low-cost airline, cramped and annoyed, and knowing the person in front if you is going to recline their seat into your lap immediately after take-off.
In many countries around the world, there are local ethnic communities. Do you feel that Phuket has these communities?
If not, why do you think there are no such communities? Phuket is a melting pot and in it’s diversity there is also a rich fabric, of flavor and texture. Historically this was a coastal trading town and has always attracted different cultures and people this remains the same as present day.
What is the car of your dreams?
Cars are not my passion so I take a practical approach to them and living in Phuket, an SUV just makes sense.
What people do you like/don’t like?
I love talking to people who engage life, have a worldview and have something to talk about. My inner narcissist especially liked the dark, cynical English sense of humor. As for those I don’t like, that’s the haters, those who sit behind their computer screens and only spew out negative drivel about what’s wrong with Phuket It always starts off with those waxing poetically how the island has been ruins, developed and is an absolute hellhole. What I don’t understand is they are still here? What a sad life living in someplace that you hate so much. Yes, I don’t like the haters.
Funniest Thing in Asia?
For me one of Asia’s great country’s is the Philippines- I’ve lived there, worked there and it’s a place close to my heart but also there is a humorous side. From corn ice cream, corn tuna, to putting sugar on pasta. Also terms – like those signs for bed spacers etc, it brings a smile to my face just visit the place and the often ironic things that appear before your eyes.
Superstitions?
I struggle with sardines. Wait, that’s not a superstitions, but when I was little I avoided walking over lines in the street, somehow that all went away so since then It’s just this thing about sardines.
What is your life motto?
This isn’t a dress rehearsal so you best step outside and live your dreams, for better or worse or just for what they are…”

Билл Барнетт - основатель и директор C9 Hotelworks Что заставило Вас переехать в свое время в Азию?
Это было экзотическое и впечатляющее место. Я всю свою жизнь читал об Азии всякие удивительные истории. Я жил на Гавайях и прочитал историю Майкла Рокфеллера, который пропал в Папуа Новой Гвинее, открывая для себя дикие места в непроходимых джунглях. Я решил ехать туда. И это был мой первый пункт в долгом путешествии по Азии, начавшемся 30 лет назад.
Что для вас, как американца, стало самым странным в Азии?
Мой опыт в послевоенном Вьетнаме. Я был первым американским отельером, который начал работать во Вьетнаме в 1991 году. Я управлял отелем в Хошимине (Сайгоне) и позднее в городе Хюэ. Многие сотрудники помнили войну, участвовали в ней, но их доброта, открытость и щедрость меня просто поразили. Жизнь для тех людей не остановилась на полях сражений, и я был счастлив показать им новые горизонты, новые идеи и помочь туристической отрасли сделать свой вклад в восстановление страны. Когда я улетал из Хюэ, более 100 человек пришли, чтобы меня проводить. Я помню, как все они махали вслед взлетающему самолету. Это не забыть никогда.
Почему Вы выбрали название С9 для своей компании?
Мы работаем в сфере недвижимости и гостеприимства. Так что «Девятое небо» (Cloud 9) сразу пришло мне на ум. Это своеобразная метафора, хэштег – вы отправляетесь спать на облака.
В чем отличие отельного бизнеса в Азии от Европы?
Азия – самый быстрорастущий рынок гостеприимства в мире. Это очень динамичный сектор экономики, где есть такие возможности, которые и не снились на Западе. Где еще вы можете увидеть такое количество проектов, которые растут как грибы после дождя. Я люблю ездить по Пхукету и смотреть на такие проекты, как Andara, Point Yamu by Como, Phuket Pavilions, Mövenpick Karon, Laguna Village и многие другие, в создание которых мы вложили свои силы и душу.
Каковы Ваши прогнозы по поводу роста отельного бизнеса на Пхукете?
Пхукет – центральное место всей Азии, где пересекаются все дороги с Запада на Восток. Здесь сильный сервис и множество путей для развития. Остров продолжит урбанизироваться, как Бали и многие другие курорты в Азии. Будут появляться новые отели, марины, будет развиваться туризм, откроются новые международные школы, торговые центры. Я считаю Пхукет очень перспективным местом, именно его я выбрал для бизнеса, для своей семьи, здесь я вырастил своих детей.
Какой совет Вы могли бы дать инвесторам?
Что им делать и что не делать? Ок, сперва изучите, как бизнес развивался в долгосрочной ретроспективе, постарайтесь обнаружить все «подводные камни» до того, как нырнуть в него с головой. Старайтесь найти незанятую нишу. Не идите по проторенной дорожке.
Каковы Ваши хобби?
Много путешествовать и писать, когда есть время.
Какие рестораны на Пхукете в Вашем топ-листе?

Какую музыку Вы предпочитаете?
Рок-н-ролл поздних 60-х и ранних 70-х. Лучшее время для этой музыки. Старый добрый джаз, Contrane, Чарли Паркер, и стиль кантри с Западного побережья США. Мне также нравится Грэхам Парсонс. В общем, у меня очень эклектичный вкус.
Вы любите вечеринки?
Скажу так, раньше я очень часто наблюдал рассветы, не ложась спать всю ночь. Сегодня же я предпочитаю ловить первые лучи солнца, протирая глаза в кровати. Забавно, как все меняется в жизни.
Кто были Ваши кумиры?
Я всегда очень много читал. Это и Грэхэм Грин, конечно, Хемингуэй, Джозеф Конрад. Такие «нетрендовые» писатели, как Ричард Бротигэн, Том МакГуэйн и, не могу не вспомнить, Доктора Гонзо – Хантера С. Томпсона. Моя молодость прошла под знаком книг и путешествий, так что это мой инь-янь.
Что Вы больше всего ненавидите?
Сидеть в тесном и раздражающем кресле самолета лоу-кост авиакомпании и понимать, что человек спереди опустит спинку своего сиденья сразу после взлета.
Во многих странах мира экспаты объединяются в сообщества. На Пхукете это есть?
Даже если нет, вы думаете сообществ нет? Пхукет – это плавильный котел, где люди находят друг друга не по национальному признаку. Богатство культур, вкусов исторически свойственно Пхукету, как месту, где всегда процветала прибрежная торговля. Сюда всегда приезжало огромное количество иностранцев, которые привносили что-то свое в общую культуру острова.

Есть ли автомобиль, о котором Вы мечтаете?
Машины – не моя страсть, так что внедорожник или паркетник – отличный выбор для тех, кто живет на Пхукете.
Есть что-то, что вас раздражает на пхукете?
Я люблю общаться с людьми, которые живут полной жизнью, имеют широкие взгляды на мир, и с кем есть, о чем поговорить. Мой внутренний нарциссизм обожает циничный черный английский юмор. Я терпеть не могу людей, которые сидят перед экранами своих компьютеров и пишут негативные комментарии везде, где только могут. Им не нравится на Пхукете все, они плачут по тому, что разрушено, по девственности острова. Я одного не пойму, что они до сих пор здесь делают? Как же печально жить там, где тебя все раздражает. Вот таких персонажей я не люблю.
Самая забавное для Вас в Азии?
Для меня одной из самых значимых стран в Азии являются Филиппины. Я жил там, работал, но есть там кое-что забавное. Начиная с кукурузного мороженого и заканчивая посыпанием макарон сахаром. Еще меня всегда смешили знаки, предостерегающие от чего-либо.
Есть ли у Вас суеверия?
Я боюсь сардин. Это можно назвать суеверием? Когда я был маленьким, я всегда избегал хождения по нарисованным линиям на тротуарах. Но сейчас это прошло. Так что остались одни сардины.
Каково Ваше жизненное кредо?
Жизнь не предполагает репетиций, нельзя что-то переиграть по-новому, так что лучше всегда следовать своей мечте, к худшему или лучшему она приведет, неважно! Главное, что мечта есть!

A Fusion of Fashion and Medicine
A
n interesting new photography exhibition came to Chulalongkorn Hospital recently. In an effort to show support for the extraordinary work that people involved in medicine commit themselves to on a daily basis, two of Thailand's most renowned photographers, Tom Potisit and Surachai Saengsuwan, decided to curate an exhibition focusing on the themes of body, organ and blood donations. Anatomy 101: The Medical Fashion Photography exhibition celebrates the work of surgeons, doctors and of course organ donors. The exhibition marked the 101st anniversary of the hospital and a large number of famous Thai and International celebrities were invited to attend, including Madamn Mod, Gene Kasidit, Cholly Wachanannont, Rossarin(Rose) Sinjarearn and many more. The idea for the exhibition came about when Tom Potisit and Surachai Saengsuwan went through treatments and operations themselves. They came to the realization of how important organ donation is to the medical community and decided to hold a photographic campaign to support the hospital and the Red Cross. The exhibition combined elements of fashion and medicine. Its aim was to raise public awareness of how everyday people can make many different types of donations. Examples of the types of body parts that can be donated were presented in the exhibition and information about how to donate was provided as well. The Anatomy 101: The Medical Fashion Photography exhibition ran from the 25th of September until the 4th of October at the Chakrabongse Building, Chulalongkorn Hospital. На ее открытии побывали многие тайские селебрити, в их числе: Мадам Мод, Гене Касидит, Чоли Вачананонт, Розарин Синджареарн Идея выставки была предложена Томом и Сурачаем после того, как им пришлось перенести серьезные операции. Они поняли, насколько важна проблема донорских органов, их завещание людьми больницам и госпиталям, ведь это может спасти не одну жизнь. Они решили сделать фотовыставку, чтобы поддержать один из главных бангкокских госпиталей и Красный Крест Таиланда. Выставка сочетает в себе элементы моды и медицины. Ее главная цель – дать понять публике, насколько важно ежедневно получать донорские органы и кровь. На фотографиях изображены различные человеческие органы, которые могут быть завещаны, предоставлена информация о том, как это делается и зачем.
