Top of the Gulf Regatta in Pattaya, 4-7 May The annual Top of the Gulf Regatta is one of the biggest sailing events in Thailand. Entering its 13th year, it attracts a unique array of boat classes to Ocean Marina Yacht Club, just south of Pattaya, for four exciting days of racing on the Gulf of Thailand at the beginning of May. While the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta takes the title of the largest event of this kind in Thailand (and in the rest of Asia, too), The Top of the Gulf Regatta is unique for being the only multi-class sailing event in the area. It was founded in 2005, when a series of smaller events were combined together into one big one, featuring keelboats, ocean multihulls, one-design Platus, beach catamarans, dinghies and Optimists.

Miss Tiffany’s Universe in Pattaya, 13 May The Miss Tiffany Universe contest was launched in 1998 in tandem with the government’s Amazing Thailand Year, a publicity campaign that emphasised the country’s unique tourist attractions. It was also aimed at creating a positive image for transgender people, who struggle to find jobs outside of the entertainment and tourism industries. The winners of Miss Tiffany’s Universe receive 120,000 Baht in cash, a new car and other prizes, totaling over 1 Million Baht.

Laguna Phuket Marathon, 3-4 June On June 3-4, 2017, thousands of runners from around the world will ‘Run Paradise’ in the latest edition of the Laguna Phuket International Marathon at Asia’s most popular family-friendly destination marathon. Along with the full-on 42km marathon (18yrs +) there’ll be a 21-km half-marathon (16yrs +) and 10-km run (13yrs +), 10km run (13yrs +), a five-km community walk (all welcome) and a two-km children’s race (up to 12yrs), so there really is something for all participants. It’s a colourful and friendly morning in a beautiful green location with plenty of excitement, refreshments, lots of parking and best of all – it’s for a good cause.

Elevating Thailand’s farm-to-table movement Launched last December, PRU is breaking ground in Phuket as one of the region’s most anticipated dining experiences nestled in the award-winning luxury beachfront resort Trisara. Фермерский подход шефа Джима к высокой кухне Открывшийся в декабре 2016 года в отеле Trisara ресторан PRU предлагает уникальный гастрономический опыт, ведь все блюда создаются здесь на основе продуктов, полученных на собственной ферме Pru Jumpa.

На площадях Pru Jumpa, расположенной, у живописной реки, бережно выращиваются куры cвободного выгула, сельскохозяйственные культуры, органические овощи, местные травы и специи и многое другое. A matter of
taste
Taste Bar & Grill could be reviewed in just a few short words — «In Phuket since 2007». After all, how many friends do you have, who’ve been here that long? And how many such restaurants do you know? I bet not many, and chances are that those are some of your best friends. And some of the best restaurants on the island. BY MACIEK KLIMOWICZ Anyone who’s been in Phuket longer than for a brief holiday, knows that our beautiful place under the sun is a transient one — people come and go, and so do businesses. The culinary landscape of the island also changes perpetually, with new restaurant joying the scene and other falling into oblivion. Those that manage to stay open beyond a season or two, must be doing something right. What is it that Taste Bar & Grill does right? Initially the restaurant occupied a premium spot in Surin beach. Beachside location, lots of foot traffic, spectacular sunset — no wonder the business succeeded, right? Just partly. While those things certainly helped, Taste was given a chance to prove that their formula is about much more than just the location. That chance came in the shape of a total wipe-out of the beach promenade businesses in Surin, perfumed with uncompromised fortitude by the military government. Taste was forced to move to a new address, across the street from Tesco in Cheng Talay, away from tourists and natural landscapes. And yet it survives to this day. More than survives, it thrives. How?
«It’s not really any secret, we simply care for each and every customer,» says Taste’s owner, the self-taught chef Martin Ostlind, and continues to express his absolute devotion and passion for the job. «For me cooking is like an addictive video game, I just keep coming back to it, to improve and try new things.» To prove his words, he produces his specials menu. «This is my space to experiment, there is always some project going on, something new cooking. it’s a great excuse for locals to keep returning to try my new dishes,» he says. And they do. As we sit and chat over a plate of maybe the best crab cake I’ve ever tried in Phuket, chef Martin keeps shaking hands and nodding to returning customers. Whether it’s an elderly couple sipping cocktails at the bar («We make our cocktails strong! «proclaims a chalkboard sign), a group of friends sharing crunchy flatbreads with a variety of toppings, or a family of four dining at a table entirely covered with plates of entrées and tapas, everyone seems to feel at home in the dimly lit interiors of Taste, decorated with just the right amount quirky art (the silver lama at the entrance is not to be missed!)

«Our menu is not designed to fit any one particular person» says chef Martin. «A lot of people open it and start scratching their heads, because they cannot figure out what kind of restaurant we are. Is it Mediterranean cuisine, a BBQ? Yes, there are elements of those things, but it’s more than that,» he explains. What this «more» constitutes is hinted in the restaurant’s name — Taste. As long as it tastes good, you might find it on the restaurant’s menu. Some products are sourced locally, but many come from around the globe. «We import great meat from Australia, salmon from Norway and other, because we look for produce of absolutely best quality!» exclaims chef Martin. He then continues tell me how they peel their own crabs, make their own bread, mince their own burgers and make their own ice cream, but with each dish that lands in front of me — the Spanish style Gambas, double braised calf cheek, a lamb steak with a potato gratin that is not short of divine — I feel less words are necessary. For chef Martin each dish comes with a story, but for me they all speak for themselves, with their flavours. And then, somewhere during our conversation, chef Martin proclaims his affection for our island «It’s our home and we’ve been here so long. We love Phuket,» and as I dig into the home-made, Belgian beer sorbet, I finally grasp what the secret of Taste Bar & Grill is — yes, they love Phuket…and Phuket loves them back. И если заведение продолжает жить после одного-двух сезонов, значит с ним как минимум все в порядке. В чем же секрет успеха Taste Bar & Grill? Изначально заведение находилось на пляже Сурин. Удачное местоположение во многом определило успешность заведения. Но лишь отчасти. После того, как власти очистили Сурин от всех увеселительных заведений и ресторанов, Taste был вынужден переехать на новый адрес — на этот раз в Чернгтале. Ресторан обосновался напротив супермаркета Tesco Lotus, у дороги и в общем‑то не в самом привлекательном для туристов районе. Но, несмотря на локацию, ресторан выжил и продолжает процветать. Как? «Это вовсе не секрет, мы просто заботимся о каждом нашем клиенте, — говорит владелец Taste, шеф-самоучка Мартин Остлинд. — Для меня готовить так же увлекательно, как какая‑нибудь затягивающая компьютерная игра. Я постоянно занимаюсь этим и пробую что‑то новое». В подтверждение своих слов Мартин продемонстрировал специальное меню заведения: «Это мое пространство экспериментов, здесь всегда появляется что‑то новенькое, что заставляет наших клиентов возвращаться снова и снова».
Пока мы сидим и болтаем за поеданием, возможно, лучшего крабового пирога, который я пробовал на Пхукете, шеф Мартин продолжает пожимать руки и приветственно кивать гостям, которые явно пришли сюда не в первый раз. «Наше меню создано не для удовлетворения желаний какого‑то одного человека, — объясняет Мартин. — Многие люди почесывают голову, глядя в наше меню. Они не могут понять, на какой кухне мы специализируемся. Cредиземноморская или барбекю? Конечно, есть элементы и того и другого, но Taste — это нечто большее. Если есть что‑то вкусное, то вы найдете это в нашем меню».

Топ-4 лучших бургерных Пхукета В конце марта на Пхукете прошло главное гастрономическое состязание за звание «Phuket Best Burger». Лучшие рестораны и отели отправили своих шеф-поваров в Boat Lagoon, где весь день 25 марта на гриле жарились котлеты из отборной говядины и подрумянивались свежие булочки, разнося по округе невероятный аромат и притягивая туристов и экспатов со всего острова. И все это только ради одного — выяснить, кто же готовит любимое народное блюдо лучше всех. Награду в 2017 году получил отель Thavorn Beach Village & Spa, а мы по этому поводу вспомнили еще несколько бургерных, достойных внимания каждого уважающего себя мясоеда.

Silk Restaurant One of the challenges of Phuket is the number of new and different restaurants that are always opening on the island. We are always keen to try the new and cult restaurants but in a way, we tend to forget the «Golden Oldies».

I recently went back to Silk after almost 4 years. When I was first on the island, Silk was well known on the coast road at its Surin Plaza address — next to Allan Zeman’s corporate office, the developer of Andara Resort & Villas — but later moved to its current location at Andara Resort south of Kamala Beach on Millionaire’s mile. The restaurant itself is a traditional dark wood panelled Thai setting, with lots of silk and mirrors, it consists of air-conditioned area and two comfortable terraces, but its little secret is the pool area outside and the great sea-view. If you are looking for a luxury beautiful venue, Silk is the perfect choice. For those that are not house guests there is a pool pass option called «A Day in Paradise» that includes a drink and a light meal to go with the use of the pool. This pass costs 1,100 Baht each. Thursday nights there is a poolside BBQ with live music and entertainment during the dry season. Silk is well recognized for its Thai food and also enjoys a broad Western menu thanks to its new Executive Chef, Tino Rominger, a Swiss national, grown up in St. Moritz. Tino’s traditional French culinary skills serve him well in this new environment. Add to this his spoken Italian and love of Italian food that shines through the entire Western menu. He also embraces the love of Thai food. The extensive lunch and dinner menus are available with options of vegetarian

Ресторан Silk в Andara Одной из непростых задач на Пхукете является выбор ресторана, поскольку едва ли не каждый день здесь открывается новое место. В поисках новых ощущений мы нередко забываем о старых проверенных местах и очень даже зря.

Не так давно я впервые за четыре года вновь побывал в ресторане Silk. Когда я приехал на остров, ресторан располагался в торговом комплексе Surin Plaza, напротив офиса Алана Земана (девелопера Andara). Позднее заведение переехало в отель Andara Resort & Villas на Камале, на Милю Миллионеров, где и находится по сей день. Интерьер ресторана выполнен в традиционном тайском стиле, с обилием шелка, темного дерева и зеркал. Имеется кондиционированное помещение и две террасы с удобными диванами, но главный секрет этого места — в бассейне на открытом воздухе с потрясающим видом на море. Если вы ищете роскошное красивое место, Silk — прекрасный выбор. Кстати, бассейн доступен не только для постояльцев отеля, но и для outdoor гостей по специальному тарифу «День в раю», включающему напиток, легкий перекус и, собственно, сам бассейн. Стоимость билета в рай — 1100 батов на человека. А по четвергам во время высокого сезона у бассейна проходят барбекю-вечеринки с живой музыкой и шоу-программой. Ресторан Silk давно известен великолепной тайской кухней, и также предлагается европейская — над ней работает швейцарец Тино Ромингер, который ранее полтора года был личным поваром в Москве. У Тино, выросшего в Сан-Мориц, классический французский подход к своему делу. Добавьте к этому его знание итальянского языка и любовь к итальянской кухне, что сквозит через все европейское меню.

Но вернемся к тайской кухне ресторана Silk. В подробном меню обозначена острота блюд, а также указано, можно ли сделать то или иное блюдо в вегетарианском варианте. Лично мои фавориты: блинчики с уткой (Maning Phuket), пананг-карри с тофу (Panang Tao Hoo Taud), салат с грибами на гриле (Yam Had Yang) и острый луциан во фритюре (Plaa Thaud Samun Prai). Silk — не только ресторан, но и известный бар под руководством опытного бармена Кун Ра. Здесь вы можете отведать разнообразнейшие коктейли и в добавление к вашей еде — вина из отличной коллекции, причем цены на вина вполне уместные.
Маленькие секреты… Если вы уже запланировали поход в Silk, рекомендую приехать в районе 17:30, расположиться с видом на закат и насладиться счастливыми часами. In a welcome sign of hope for the endangered tiger, a new scientific survey has confirmed the presence of the world’s second breeding population of Indochinese tigers and provided the first photographic evidence of tiger cubs in eastern Thailand. Conducted in partnership by Freeland and Panthera with support from the government of Thailand, the camera trap survey carried out in the forest complex in Eastern Thailand indicated a density of 0.63 tigers per 100 km2.
The Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation and its partners organized the 8 annual Mai Khao Marine Turtle Release Ceremony on Songkran day, April 13. With five hundred hotel’s guests, Phuket residents, tourists and provincial dignitaries gathered at Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa’s beachfront and were welcomed by General Manager of the hotel, Mr. Oriol Montal. All monies have raised through donations during the event, it went towards supporting the Phuket Marine Biological Centre’s injured Turtle Rehabilitation Program and the Third Naval Area Command’s Turtle Hatchery Program.
In April famous rock band Coldplay visited Phuket Elephant Sanctuary in Phuket. Along with their families, musicians spent the most fabulous afternoon strolling the sanctuary with elephants Kannika, Madee and Dok Gaew. Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is the first and only true ethical elephant sanctuary in Phuket, Southern Thailand.

He has developed his unique life-coaching philosophy over many years as he overcame painful setbacks and strove to live his own life to the fullest. Now he shares his hardwon knowledge with others, to help them to acheive a healthy balance, both physically and mentally, in their own lives.

Hayden, you were born in New Zealand, so how did you end up living in Phuket? In 2004 I was surfing my way through Indonesia and ended up in Chiang Mai exploring Thailand. At that time, I was asked by SEARA International to help establish a wellness orientated urban health club in Bangkok. Bangkok was not my cup of tea… so I ended up developing a more boutique health club for SEARA in 2008 – RPM Health Club, Phuket, located in the beautiful Royal Phuket Marina. Most of our Russian readers know nothing about your home country and its people. What are New Zealanders like? Tree-hugging hippies, running around in rags and living in caves… I’m kidding! It’s a very modern country, high-tech and full of well-educated, fun life-loving Kiwis [a Kiwi is someone from New Zealand]. Most kiwis are pretty down to earth, honest and nature loving people, perhaps stemming from the beautiful culture of the Maori people. The landscape is diverse and the South Island contains some of the most incredible natural beauty in the world. You might be looking at waves on a deserted beach with snow-covered mountains in the background, and then if you drive for 30-minutes, you can be walking through a rain forest or around the shore of great lake. Nature is appreciated in NZ and most people connect with it regularly. We are an outdoor orientated people… who also love beer, barbecues, beaches, and of course, rugby! Back home you were a junior-level rugby player and a senior-level surfer. Then, as I understand, your dreams of playing professional rugby were shattered due to serious injuries. Do you miss it? I missed rugby terribly when I was younger, but the minor brain damage, head trauma and hospitalizations really made me consider what was important in life. As for surfing, it’s now in my blood and whenever even a small swell arrives in Phuket I make the most of it. It’s not great surf here, but the beauty is that you can find some fun waves if you are lucky and understand the weather, the sand banks and the tides.

INTERVIEW / ИНТЕРВЬЮ I’ve read that at following your rugby injuries, you had some difficult times, but eventually you rebuilt your confidence and strength and decided to live healthily and positively. Could you say a few words about that time and what inspired you to change your life? After suffering minor brain damage from multiple head injuries from rugby, and spending time in and out of hospital, I thought something was wrong with me. I had to stop playing rugby and my parents helped me gain back some of my confidence and channel my energy into swimming and gymnastics. Although I became competent, it just wasn’t the same love that I had for rugby. After years of training I was really good at a few certain gymnastic disciplines and competed at the national championships. But after a nasty fall during my routine, I missed my chance at a medal and ended up placing fourth… that hurt my pride. I don’t know if I lived ‘unhealthily’ I always aimed to have balance, but sure, I participated in some unhealthy choices along the way. During that time in my early adulthood I had some relationship issues that really led me to ponder on my life. I had pretty much lost everything I thought was most important at that time – money, job, car, friends, fitness and my mental wellbeing. I lived in an emotional and mental nightmare for what seemed like eternity. I was very close to suicide and again, knowing what I know now, I should have been in psychiatric care.
I WAS IN A BAD PLACE AND I CAN TELL YOU, SUGAR, ALCOHOL, DRUGS, LACK OF MOVEMENT AND A LACK OF AWARENESS WILL DRAW YOU DOWN INTO A HEAVY MENTAL DARKNESS THAT ENCOMPASSES YOU AND DRAINS THE VERY LIFE OUT OF YOU set and body and it’s best to do it with an experienced coach. You are specialist in nutrition, but more than that, you’re about coaching people to lead a holistically healthy lifestyle. Could you tell us more about your current job? I am the general manager of RPM Health Club and that position is very varied and unique. One minute I may be writing a marketing article and the next teaching a class – the club is a very dynamic environment. As both the GM and a coach, my job is to be a role model for what true health is all about – being mentally happy and sharp, emotionally peaceful, spiritually content and physically balanced.
I was in a bad place and I can tell you, sugar, alcohol, drugs, lack of movement and a lack of awareness will draw you down into a heavy mental darkness that encompasses you and drains the very life out of you. This was my most powerful learning life experience – I learned so much about the human psyche and how brains and bodies are interrelated – as well as understanding myself.
I think coaching people about both the physical and mental aspects of their life isn’t something you can learn at university – of course there are some skills which you can learn – but I also think you have to go through some stuff. Coaching is about helping people to help themselves. I am here to guide people to where they want to go; but would possibly struggle for years if they tried to do it on their own – or perhaps never reach their goal without a coach.
The pain during this time was my inspiration – to never feel or look like that again. It took years to get ‘me’ back, using the power of proper nutrition, mind training, spiritual gym workouts and movement as my medicine. People always want quick fixes – well a quick fix is just another drug, just another addiction – it takes time to rebuild and re-shape one’s mind-
Seems like many nutritionists are vegan or at least vegetarian. Do you keep to a vegetarian diet? What is healthy nutrition to you? No. I do however believe that certified organic vegetables are the best source of minerals and nutritional content out there. I also believe each person is wired with individual biochemical re-

quirements and the study of epigenetics is now proving that our DNA responds very differently to different diets – so the “one size fits all approach” is scientifically very outdated. Healthy nutrition begins with valuing your relationship with food and learning how your body responds or reacts to all foods. Going on a full vegan diet just because someone told you to try it, especially if you are training hard in X-Fit or Muay Thai… is that spiritual or stupid? As a person who professionally helps people become happier and healthier what would you say is the key to happiness and good life? Mindset. Doing what you love and working to have a positive impact on the world. What is the point of living if you do not love what you do regularly? Nurturing your unique gifts and talents – trust them and use them for the benefit of others. Tune in to your intuition. Live, give, laugh and learn. When you do all that you will find your flow. What is your professional advice to our readers who want to change their lives and become a healthier and happier person? Work on your mindset. Your dominant daily thoughts make you are who you are. Give yourself QT daily – quality time and quiet time. And give yourself PT daily – play time or a personal trainer who is fun. Learn how to love yourself – we don’t get classes, education, lectures on this… it’s nuts how we educate ourselves. Stop looking for all answers outside – they are inside.

Новозеландец Хайден Роудс — движущая сила фитнес-клуба RPM Health Club (www.rpmhealthclub.com) и видный деятель ЗОЖ на Пхукете. Как и всякий человек, на протяжении жизни Хайдену приходилось сталкиваться с трудностями и неудачами. Но именно они придали ему сил и помогли создать целую жизненную философию, которой Хайден с удовольствием делится с людьми в качестве лайф коуча, помогая им достичь баланса в жизни. В разговоре с коллегой по спортивному цеху и репером Адамом Говардом-Флеммингом специально для RL Magazine Роудс рассказал свою историю. Интервьюировал Адам Говард-Флемминг — Хайден, ты родился в Новой Зеландии, как же ты оказался на Пхукете? — В 2004 году я занимался серфингом в Индонезии и как‑то оказался в Чиангмае. Тем не менее, кажется, что все там очень необычное. Это так? — Хиппи бегают повсюду в рваных одеждах и живут в пещерах… Шучу! Это очень современное место, продвинутое в плане технологий, образования и там полно жизнелюбивых киви (так называют новозеландцев). Так вот, большинство киви — честные и очень любящие природу люди. Природа играет огромную роль в нашей жизни и каждый новозеландец чувствует с ней связь. У нас она очень богатая и на юге вы найдете такие красоты, которых нет больше нигде в мире. Причем, здесь вы увидите и заснеженные горы, а всего в 30 минутах вас поджидает тропический лес на берегу потрясающе красивой реки. Неудивительно, что киви так любят проводить время на свежем воздухе. А еще мы любив пиво, барбекю, пляжи и, конечно же, регби! — Ты занимался регби на родине, а еще был про серфером. И насколько я понимаю, твои планы стать серьезным игроком регби порушились из‑за травмы. Ты скучаешь по игре? — Когда был моложе, я безумно скучал по регби. Но травмы головы и госпитализации действительно заставляли меня задуматься о том, что важно в жизни. Что касается серфинга, то это в моей крови, и когда на Пхукет приходят малейшие волны, пользуюсь возможностью встать на доску. Здесь с серфингом дела обстоят неважно, но если вам повезет и вы поймаете нужную погоду, то можно оторваться.

INTERVIEW / ИНТЕРВЬЮ — Слышал, после спортивных травм у тебя были сложные времена, но, в конце концов, ты смог вернуть себе уверенность и силу, решив взять курс на здоровый и позитивный образ жизни. Расскажи об этом поподробнее. Что тебя вдохновило изменить свою жизнь? — Получив повреждение головного мозга, вызванное множественными травмами головы от регби, и проведя много времени в больнице, я подумал, что со мной что‑то не так. Родители помогли мне вернуть часть моей уверенности и направить свою энергию на плавание и гимнастику. Я быстро преуспел в этих видах спорта, но это была уже не та любовь, что к регби. Я не знаю, вел ли я вообще когда‑либо нездоровый образ жизни, но я всегда стремился к балансу. Тем не менее, какие‑то объективно нездоровые вещи я делал. В первые годы своей взрослой жизни у меня были некоторые трудности во взаимоотношениях c людьми, заставившие меня пересмотреть всю жизнь. Я потерял все, что было для меня ценно на тот момент — деньги, работу, машину, друзей, фитнесс и психическое равновесие. Я жил будто в кошмаре и был очень близок к самоубийству. Оглядываясь назад, я понимаю, что нуждался в психологической помощи. Я был в плохом месте и могу сказать, что алкоголь, наркотики и нехватка движения могут привести вас в очень мрачное состояние, которое охватывает вас и высасывает из вас саму жизнь. Это был самый мощный жизненный опыт: я много нового узнал о человеческой психике и о том, как взаимосвязаны мозг и тело, а также о том, как понять себя. Боль, которая пронизывала меня все это время стала моим вдохновением:
ЗДЕСЬ С СЕРФИНГОМ ДЕЛА ОБСТОЯТ НЕВАЖНО, НО ЕСЛИ ВАМ ПОВЕЗЕТ И ВЫ ПОЙМАЕТЕ НУЖНУЮ ПОГОДУ, ТО МОЖНО ОТОРВАТЬСЯ во что бы то ни стало, я больше никогда не хотел так выглядеть или чувствовать себя. У меня ушли годы тренировок, практик и здорового питания, прежде чем я снова смог стать человеком. Движение и спорт стали моим лекарством. Люди всегда хотят быстрых изменений, хотят быстро встать на ноги, но это так не работает. Чтобы изменить свой разум и тело, придется долго к этому идти и лучше всего, чтобы рядом был профессиональный наставник. — Ты специализируешься на здоровом питании, и более того, на лайф-коучинге. То есть ты помогаешь людям достичь лучшей жизни. Можешь рассказать об этом поподробнее? — Я управляю RPM Health Club. Моя работа по‑настоящему уникальна и разнообразна. Сейчас я могу писать пресс-релиз, а через несколько минут у меня занятие с группой. Это очень динамичное место. В качестве генерального менеджера и тренера я стараюсь стать образцом для подражания и взрастить в своих учениках идею, что истинное здоровье — это быть счастливым, эмоционально спокойным и физически сбалансированным. Думаю, что лайф-коучинг не является чем‑то, что можно выучить в университете. Нужен опыт, вы должны побывать в передрягах. Cейчас моя задача — направить людей
туда, куда они хотят прийти. Но путь этот может занять годы. — Многие люди, пропогандирующие здоровый образ жизни, придерживаются ограничений в еде, например, не едят мяса. Как ты на это смотришь? — Я думаю, что каждый организм индивидуален. Об этом свидетельствуют и последние исследования в области эпигенетики: ДНК по‑разному реагирует на различные диеты, так что правило «one size fits all approach» (один размер подходит всем) уже устарело. Здоровое питание начинается с правильной оценки ваших отношений с едой и изучения реакций организма на те или иные продукты. Так что садиться на диету только потому, что вам кто‑то посоветовал, особенно, если вы занимаетесь X-fit или тайским боксом..хм,по‑моему, это глупо. — Как человек, который профессионально делает людей счастливее и здоровее, что бы ты назвал ключом к счастью и хорошей жизни? — Мышление. Делайте то, что вы любите, и старайтесь оказать положительное влияние на мир. Какой смысл жить, если вы не любите то, что вы делаете? Взращивайте свои уникальные таланты. Доверяйте им и используйте на благо других. Живите, дарите, смейтесь и учитесь. Когда вы все это сделаете, вы найдете себя.

However, regulars of Phuket’s famous martial arts training mecca of Soi Ta-iad in Chalong – even those who are only six-years-old – might more readily bring to mind Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Why the mental association for someone so young? Well, because it’s at this tender age boys and girls are admitted to the jiu-jitsu school at the Phuket Top Team MMA Training Camp. At the age of eight, some of these students are already winning medals at international competitions. Take for example Michael Zavalny who at the end of March took bronze at the Pan-Asian Games in Manila and followed it up with a gold medal at a prestigious tournament in Bangkok. Michael’s teammate at Phuket Top Team — nine-year-old Andreas Mugu — competed admirably, but did not make it to the podium. Nonetheless, plenty more medal opportunities still lay ahead of him in the regular jiu-jitsu competitions in the region. For example, the recent tournament in Bangkok was based on Japanese, not Brazilian, Jiu-Jitsu but Michael and Andreas adapted to new rules and fighting styles without problem. The development of juvenile jiu-jitsu at Phuket Top Team is overseen by Ben Royle and Marc Gaba Dovi. There are just a dozen children in the training group which
allows each child to receive close personal supervision and training. Typically Marc divides the students into two groups: one for basic skills and technique training and another for more advanced students who are training for competition. For Marc, jui jitsu is much more than just a martial art and he is passionate about the manifold advantages of the training. He is quick to emphasize how the classes help to build self-confidence and teach children how to work hard towards a goal and not give up. «In terms of the social aspects, the main bonus is a kind of modesty. You understand that you never know in advance who is better than you and in what,» he says. «If you look at the sports side, then ju-jitsu is one of the best martial arts for children. It perfectly develops coordination and helps to form important skills of self-defense. It’s also a low-impact technique, so no one is hitting a six-year-old child on the head!» Marс explains. along with the skills of the students themselves, has gone from strength to strength. All the students train in pairs: one participant conducts an attacking movement and the other performs a defensive response. Trainers watch the students and dive in to adjust technique, give advice and encouragement, and make sure everything goes smoothly and safely — all while imparting a sense of sporting passion. Hour-long training sessions are ended with some «free sparring», which in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is known as «rolling». Here, students you can try out new moves and techniques in a more competitive situation — so there is a little more excitement but its all still under the watchful eye of the coaches. «When they are in the same weight category and really work hard in the sparring session they learn much more quickly,» explains Marc. Generally jiu-jitsu is a very democratic sport. For classes, you do not need anything except a kimono (which is called «gi»), and you don’t even need that to start out with some basic training. In addition, jiu-jitsu is completely gender neutral: both boys and girls are engaged in one program together and are free to work with each other in pairs in both training and «rolling». Currently, lessons for children in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu take place at Phuket Top Team three times a week: on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the afternoon and on Saturdays in the morning. The training centre also plans to expand the program and open a kickboxing section and other disciplines as well. Однако завсегдатаи сой Тайед в Чалонге первым пунктом укажут бразильское джиу-джитсу, причем даже те из них, кому всего шесть лет.

Про шесть лет — отнюдь не шутка, поскольку именно с этого возраста принимают мальчиков и девочек в школу джиу-джитсу при Phuket Top Team, а в возрасте восьми лет уже можно завоевывать медали на международных соревнованиях, как Михаил Завальный, который в конце марта взял бронзу на паназиатских играх в Маниле, а затем золото на турнире в Бангкоке. Одноклубник Михаила по Phuket Top Team — девятилетний Андреас Мугу — также выступил уверенно, но до подиума не добрался. Его медали пока впереди, благо соревнования по джиу-джитсу в регионе проходят регулярно. К примеру, турнир в Бангкоке был по японскому, а не бразильскому джиу-джитсу, но Михаил и Андреас к новым для себя правилам адаптировались без проблем. Развитием юношеского джиу-джитсу в Phuket Top Team занимаются Бен Ройл и Марк Габа Дови. С учетом того, что на занятиях в группе не более десятка детей, то тренерским вниманием никто из воспитанников не обделен. Состав участников интернациональный, равно как и опыт занятия единоборствами. Марк условно делит воспитанников на две группы: базовую и тех, кто уже занимается с прицелом на соревнования. Для Марка джиу-джитсу — это больше, чем просто единоборство. Перечисляя плюсы этого вида спорта он подчеркивает, что занятия придают ребенку уверенность в себе, учат упорно работать на результат и не сдаваться. «В плане социальном главный бонус — это своего рода скромность. Ты понимаешь, что никогда не знаешь заранее, кто лучше тебя и в чем», — говорит он. Если же смотреть именно на спортивную сторону, то джиу-джитсу — одно
из лучших единоборств для детей. Оно отлично развивает координацию, формирует необходимые навыки самообороны и отличается минимальным травматизмом. «Это безударная техника, так что никто не будет бить шестилетнего ребенка по голове», — объясняет Марк. С момента открытия школы в августе прошлого года ни одной травмы у занимающихся не было. «При этом борьба — это очень важно, потому что большинство случаев физического взаимодействия — это один-два удара, а потом все сцепились», — добавляет он. Кроме того, занятия детям просто нравится, в чем можно убедиться, проведя полчаса-час в тренировочном зале. Все приемы отрабатывают в паре: один участник проводит атакующее движение, другой выполняет защитное. Тренеры по ходу корректируют технику, дают советы, все проходит плавно и безопасно, но со спортивным азартом. Завершаются часовые тренировки свободными «спаррингами», которые в бразильском джиу-джитсу носят говорящее название «роллинг». Здесь можно опробовать приемы по своему вкусу, азарта чуть больше, но внимания тренеров — столько же. «Когда они в одной весовой категории и работают сами, между собой, то они гораздо

большему учатся», — объясняет Марк. Вообще джиу-джитсу — весьма демократичный спорт. Для занятий не нужно ничего, кроме кимоно (которое здесь называют «ги»), а если на первых порах его не будет — форму дадут в самой школе. Кроме того, джиу-джитсу полностью свободно от гендерных стереотипов: мальчики и девочки занимаются вместе по одной программе и свободно оказываются друг с другом в паре на отработке приемов и в «роллинге». Сейчас занятия по бразильскому джиу-джитсу для детей проходят в Top Team три раза в неделю: по вторникам и четвергам во второй половине дня и по субботам утром. С осени клуб планирует расширить программу и открыть секцию кикбоксинга, да и к другим видам спорта воспитанники тоже неравнодушны. The priciest superyachts at the Singapore yacht show The superyachting market is now saturated with yacht shows, but most industry influencers agree that the Singapore Yacht Show is one of the most significant shows in the ASEAN market. This year’s edition, which took place April 6th-9th, brought some of the most impressive yachts in the region to the award-winning ONE°15 Marina Club. Beyond regional debuts from the likes of Simpson Marine, Ferretti Group and Azimut Singapore, there were lifestyle offerings including supercar parades and fashion shows. For serious buyers and charter clients though, all eyes were on the water.

Fast by name and fast by nature, Silver Fast, the largest superyacht ever to be displayed at the Singapore Yacht Show, is capable of tearing through the water at 27 knots. Up to 18 guests can enjoy this boat, taking in a movie in the outdoor cinema or enjoying a dip in the glass-fronted Jacuzzi on deck. A helipad also makes exploration and transfer on and off the boat a breeze. Guido Krass, owner of SilverYachts chose to build her in Australia, encouraged by the country’s experience in fast aluminium boats. The result is a slender 77m yacht with a sleek silver profile that is destined to steal the show. Selling for US$85.9m.
At 65m this Benetti-built superyacht is the second biggest superyacht at this year’s show, accommodating 12 guests across six cabins as well as a further 18 crew to cater to their every need. Four decks offer plenty of space for the most luxurious amenities, including a touch-and-go helipad, Jacuzzi dip pool and piano bar. Italian shipyard Benetti have been proactive in the Asian market and now have a growing fleet of superyachts in the region including 55m Ocean Paradise and 56m Lady Candy.
The average support yacht might not get hearts racing, but Echo Yachts’ twinhulled Charley is anything but average. The 51m vessel will act as a shadow boat to White Rabbit Golf, which will be largest yacht ever built in Australia and the largest trimaran yacht in the world when it launches later this year. On board Charley, there’s room for several RIBs, jet skis and a hovercraft – but beyond her capabilities as a storage boat, she also ticks boxes for entertainment, with accommodation for five guests across three cabins, a dining area and space for 13 crew.

Kata Rocks hosted the first ever Kata Rocks Superyacht Rendezvous during the high season this year. Could you tell us a bit about the event and how it went? Kata Rocks has hosted previous superyacht rendezvous’ over the past few years, however this was the inaugural Kata Rocks Super Yacht Rendevous. Overall we are thrilled by the response we have received from all the Superyacht Rendezvous participants. The Feedback has been extremely positive and it is very gratifying to help elevate Phuket to elite status as a true luxury destination and superyacht playground Any other big events in the nearest future? Or do you shut down it till next high season? We never stop at Kata Rocks! We continually try to innovate and create exciting activities throughout the year. One of the most exciting activities we hold is “The Collective” series, which was conceived as a way to provide interesting and different experiences for our guests. From creative wine and food pairing dinner events in our underground wine cellar, to exclu-

What do you think about this statement? We are very lucky with the views, style and design of our property which combine to make it very “Instagramable”

Our hand-picked guest list featured Kata Rocks villa owners, owners of superyachts larger than 24 meters in length and industry professionals. Could you describe your daily routine? First off catching up with the departments and finding out what’s happening for the day and also discussing what’s happening with our guests. Then I try to meet as many guests during the morning as I can. The rest of the day is spent working with the sales team on our business, and with the F&B team planning of events and menus, as well as reviewing all of our operational business. Scot Toon is the Director of Operations at Infinite Luxury. He joined the group as the pre-opening General Manager at Kata Rocks. He joined the company from Paresa Resort Phuket where he held the position of General Manager.

I am from France. I grew up in the south, Perpignan, and my most remarkable memory is the beautiful time I spent with my friends and my years at the Hotel School. If I would miss anything, would be taking my motorbike and riding around France in search of its beautiful gastronomy and exceptional regional produce. Having exceptional encounters with wine producers, exceptional Chefs or having fresh oysters directly from the oyster farm by the seaside. I am the son and grandson of restaurateurs and this industry runs deep in my blood. Like any profession anybody can do as long it is chosen with passion, without it you cannot become a good hotelier. This is a demanding profession requiring a fair bit of devotion for your job, for your customers, and has a lot of respect for the employees. I lived 12 years in Switzerland, 7 years in England and 3 years in Northern Ireland; then short of 3 years in Japan, 3 years in South Korea and 7 years in China, and a certain number of short missions in Honk Kong, Macau, Malaysia and South Pacific. With a demanding job, I like winding off playing golf, go to the cinema or reading and listening music. Also my other big passion being food and wine, I like to discover new restaurants and Chefs or taste and discuss wines with my friends sommeliers. For the second part of this question, as I am in Phuket for only three months, I am still discovering the island and everything that it has to offer.

I believe, that while I am quite strict on certain aspect, I also tend to empower my colleagues expecting from them to take responsibility for their jobs. I like to share what is happening in the hotel so everybody feels they are fully part of a Team. I strongly believe that a happy Team performs better and provides the best service and care to our guests. I am in this field since infancy and being around hoteliers, restaurateurs, chefs and sommeliers my entire life, I have a deep passion for what I do. I always feel the happiest when I meet or hear satisfied guests. I admire personalities that have integrity, honesty and courage.

Phuket villa and condo market stable, but key indicators down, says CBRE Real estate consulting firm CBRE Thailand has released fourth quarter 2016 figures for Phuket’s real estate market. The figures show that Phuket’s market from entry-level condos to luxury villas remains stable but many figures are down when compared to the same quarter last year.

The Phuket villa market remained slow even with the increase in the number of villas sold from 28 in Q4 last year to 35 in Q4 2016. Most sales came from the lower-end segments (B5–35 million per unit) driven by investors seeking rental yield returns of around 5‑7 % for 2‑5 years. Only two luxury villas were sold in Q4: one in The Residence by Anantara in the B200-500mn range and the other one in Sri Panwa Luxury Pool villa in the B200–300 million range. There were two projects launched in this quarter. One, The Aristo Villa, was an entry-level villa (B5-15mn) and the other, Anchan Hills, mid-range (B15–35 M). «We believe that the overall Phuket villa market will remain slow with limited new project launches. Purchasers are starting to take into account the viability of the rental programs as it highly depends on the developers’ ability to manage and market the property to have daily rentals,» stated the report by CBRE. In the residential market, only 560 units were sold during Q4 2016, decreasing by 15 % year-on-year (Y-o-Y). Ninety percent of condominium sales in this quarter came from entry-level products (less than B8mn per unit). At least 85 % of sales came from projects offering some form of yield guarantee. Forty-eight percent of sales came from projects offering guaranteed yields that will be managed by recognized hotel brands such as Best Western and Wyndham. The upscale property segment priced above B15 million per unit was stable with 56 units sold in Q4 2016. There was a slowdown in new project launches with just three launches in Q4 2016 compared to five in Q4 2015. Two were entry-level while the third was the only

luxury project priced above B20mn which was launched in 2016. The first phase of this newly launched Angsana Beachfront Residences (30 units) sold out within one month as beachfront condominium supply has become more limited.

Leonardo da Vinci was fond of using warm-toned sepia in his sketches, while the artists that came to promenance in the first flush of the Renaissance, like Caravaggio and Rembrandt, created work steeped in shadows created from a hundred hues of brown. ‘The Victorians loved dark rich colours — the gothic revival was mainly to blame, but it was also practical in a time of industry and coal smoke,’ says House & Garden’s former online features editor Bonnie Robinson. ‘Browns lightened to taupes in the Twenties and Thirties, lingering during WWII, before being rashly swept away in the Fifties when brights and whites signalled a new optimism in post-war interiors. People swayed away from utilitarian and military shades. 2. The Technical College, Phang Nga — the Division of Hospitality and Science and the Division of Agriculture. The Technical College is responsible to develop a curriculum for the Pre Vocational Education programs for hospitality and agriculture in cooperation with Yaowawit and the business partners. Both divisions will on a regular basis be involved in the teachings and will supervise the vocational teachers in Yaowawit. At the end of each term the College will oversee a test of the progress of the students and will provide the students with certificates.
4. Yaowawit School, Kapong / Children’s World Academy Foundation Yaowawit is the home of the first two Pre Vocational Education programs in South East Asia if not the world. It provides all necessary facilities like class rooms, the hotel and the farm for training purposes. Yaowawit organizes the day to day operations and schedules for the program. It communicates with all partners to ensure successful operations. Yaowawit is chosen as a role model for Pre Vocational Education in Thailand and will host interested groups to show case this new way of integrated education in Thai schools. Pre Vocational Education brings a new dimension into the day-to-day learning in schools. It gives every student a chance to be active and participate, instead of being passive. And by including the after school learning into the classroom, it makes learning meaningful.
3. The Marriott Group, Thailand The Marriott Group is the expert training partner for Yaowawit’s Pre Vocational Hospitality Education. Marriott provides a full time vocational teacher and teaching materials for the hospitality program. Marriott sends experts from their hotel operations for training courses on a weekly basis.
