The start of spring also coincides with International Women’s Day, a time to reflect and celebrate the central role women play in our culture and society. In keeping with this theme, our April issue features many beautiful and forthright women who have achieved remarkable success in their fields of endeavor. We speak with controversial Russian ballerina Anastasia Volochkova about coping with jealousy, fashion designer Yana Shevchenko tells us about the sources of her seemingly endless inspiration and Muay Thai star Marcelа Prats tells us how she carved out her reputation in the male dominated world of Thai boxing. Despite their diverse talents, one thing that unites these women is their love of Phuket and its stunning natural beauty. Michelin Guide to launch Bangkok edition this year It seems like the gourmands Michelin, publishers of the world’s most respected dining guide have finally deemed the “Big Mango” worthy of serious attention. No doubt Bangkok’s top chefs will be sharpening their knives in anticipation of the chance to be rated in the guide – where a rating of even one Michelin Star can propel a chef and their restaurant to fame and fortune. There are plans to expand the guide over the coming years, so let’s hope Phuket – which had already been crowned a “Creative City of Gastronomy” by Unesco in 2015 – is the next destination to get its own version of the guide. Thailand will become the sixth country in the Asian region to have a Michelin Guide following China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea.

Phuket Bike Week, 11-13 April Once you hear the roar of packs of big bikes rumbling around the hills and highways of Phuket Island, you’ll know that Phuket Bike Week is coming. This annual event is always set in the month of April and is usually organized to coincide with Songkran, Thailand’s biggest festival. It has a number of concurrent fun events to entertain bikers, their friends, families, and onlookers including motorbike and custom bike exhibitions, Miss Phuket Bike Week competition, a beach party, concerts and a ride for peace, just to name a few. Lately, the bike week has been promoting the theme ‘ASEAN Ride Together’ to show the spirit of unity among Asian riders as many participants come from Malaysia, Singapore and neighbouring countries.

Count on each talented chef to cook up amazing culinary dishes that reflect their home country or restaurant menu, with a healthy dose of imagination for good measure. Musical entertainment by Phuket’s top female DJ, Fabuloops, runs from 9pm to 12midnight, with a live auction featuring fabulous holiday prizes to exclusive destinations also on offer. Tickets to ‘The Sassy Chefs Kitchen’ Dinner are priced at THB 3,800 net per person with all proceeds raised going towards assisting the 150 Burmese children who attend the BanYa Literacy Centre. These students recently moved into a dedicated eight-room learning facility last December 2016, funded and built through grants and donations. However, the average cost to support each child runs about 10,000 baht per annum. Good Shepherd Phuket helps women and children on the island who have been abused, are caught up in human trafficking or the sex industry, as well as in poverty or suffering from HIV. They are given shelter, counseling, schooling and the opportunity to re-educate themselves and thus earn a decent living. Handicraft items made by the women are also sold at some of the top resorts in Phuket.

Phuket Pride Festival, April 27 – 30 Colourful, eccentric, outrageous and full of fun, Phuket’s annual Gay Festival held in Patong is a riot of floats and parades and the colourful demonstrations of supreme confidence in what might be called ‘alternative’ sexualities. The Gay Festival attracts revelers from the world over and is a week of fun and well-organised activities, parties, competitions, quizzes, parades and over-the-top costumes and characters. Based around Soi Paradise and gay-friendly hotels, the festival certainly leaves its mark on Patong Beach.

Dream Beach Club’s Sunday Brunch — a Phoenix rising from the ashes In Greek mythology, a Phoenix is a bird that rises from its own ashes. In some ways, this appears to be happening to Dream Beach Club reopened from “the ashes” of Nikki Beach Club in December 2015 after a 5 month refit to coincide with the opening of Dream Hotel.

Most locals had given up on the Beach Club when it closed in early 2015 and most thought it would follow the fate of the many other Beach Clubs that the government closed in places like Surin Beach, but like the mythological Phoenix it seems to have been reborn again. In a way, Dream has the advantage of location right on Layan Beach, a great view. two pools and a big space with ample parking close by and no neighbours to complain about the noise. As a nearby resident, I had willed it to succeed because of its proximity but always it seemed to never get things right whether it be the service or food and drink offering — that is until recently. I was finally convinced to try it again after swearing I would never go back with so many things wrong with it- and I am glad I did.

New General Manager Russell Steiner (he is actually the 4th GM of the venue) and his new team, including Chef Eak (Thai national who has been in Phuket about 11 years and worked in some other great Phuket beach locations), seem to be finally sorting things out. The day I was back was a Sunday Brunch with almost 200 people enjoying Sun, Surf, Food, Drink and music — a great sign that it is getting its mojo back. Dream is attracting a tourist crowd in their 20’s to early 40’s, with a wide cosmopolitan background where nationality and style changes according to whether its high or low season and national holidays or weather. They were looking for an all-day sun filled destination and they were all clearly enjoying it. A good buffet of seafood, roasts, salads and sushi starts at noon through to about 3;00 PM, The afternoon then morphs into a pool party until sunset then it’s time to maybe think of dinner. Most importantly the food has improved significantly over the last few months and

the Chef is now taking advantage of seasonal availability here in Southern Thailand. Best thing? Service levels have improved dramatically and a great sign that the management team have a much better idea on how to run a good Beach Club. They even had 2 wines (a rose and chardonnay) on special at half price of less than 1,000 baht each. Seating ranges from formal seating for the brunch, to pool lounges right through to sun beds or even a beautiful beach. The view of the turquoise Andaman Sea with its water temperature of 28’C or body beautifuls whether muscly or skimpily dressed, is simply the icing on the cake especially when mixed with the good dance music that builds up late into the night. Never thought I would say it, but I will be back and I hear that Russell and his team finally have plans for something special in mind for the upstairs area- but that will be another story. Немногие верили в то, что на месте закрывшегося Nikki Beach на Лайяне может появиться что‑то столь же значимое для островитян. Однако, подобно птице Феникс, восставшей из пепла, на месте культового Nikki появился Dream Beach Club, очень быстро ставший для местного комьюнити любимым местом проведения досуга по выходным.

Еще бы, ведь Dream находится в отличной локации: Лайян — один из самых красивых пляжей острова, рядом — национальный парк. Не говоря уже о том, что в Dream есть два бассейна, удобная парковка и никаких соседей, жалующихся на громкую музыку. Как живущий неподалеку человек, я искренне желал успеха этому месту, но каждый раз, когда я там бывал, что‑то было не так то с едой, то с напитками…до недавнего времени. После долгих уговоров я согласился на бранч в Dream, несмотря на обещание самому себе забыть туда дорогу, и я счастлив, что позволил себя переубедить. Новый управляющий менеджер Рассел Штейнер (вообще‑то он уже четвертый GM заведения) и его команда, включая шефа Ика (тайца, который уже 11 лет работает на Пхукете), смогли избавиться от старых проблем. Я застал Dream Beach Club в воскресенье,

во время бранча, когда около 200 человек наслаждались едой, солнцем, напитками и музыкой — отличный знак, что место зажило новой жизнью. Dream привлекает всех — как 20‑летних, так и 40‑летних из разных стран и с разным бэкграундом в зависимости от сезона, праздников и других нюансов. Что объединяет всех этих людей, так это поиск идеального места для полноценного дневного отдыха, и Dream Beach Club предлагает для этого все и даже больше. Хороший шведский стол с морепродуктами, жарким, салатами и суши накрывают здесь в полдень, заканчивается бранч в 3 часа дня. Самое важное, что еда качественно улучшилась за последние несколько месяцев, и шеф пользуется преимуществом доступности сезонных продуктов, которыми богат Южный Таиланд. Теперь здесь подают два вида вина (розовое и шардоне) вдвое дешевле обычного — менее тысячи батов за бутылку.

Уровень обслуживание выше всяких похвал, еще одно подтверждение, что менеджмент Dream Beach Сlub наконец нашел оптимальный способ управления заведением. Гости могут занять столики как в обеденной крытой зоне, так и у бассейна на лежаках или даже на пляже. Умиротворяющий вид Андаманского моря и красивые люди вокруг делают общую картину полной, особенно, в сочетании с танцевальной музыкой, которая играет здесь до позднего вечера. Никогда не думал, что скажу это, но обязательно вернусь сюда снова. Тем более, у Рассела есть новые грандиозные планы. Впрочем, это уже совсем другая история. Иан Ланкастер — один из самых уважаемых экспатов на Пхукете, глава пхукетского отделения сообщества гурманов La Chaine des Rotisseurs.

Chef Francesco — Artist, Historian or Scientist or a bit of all three? We read the ad or the magazine review or the menu and its often a superficial insight into a restaurant. Sometimes we research Trip Advisor or even better hear word of mouth about a restaurant or Chef but rarely do we get to talk to them.

Koala choice

Recently I met with Chef Francesco Greco in Plum Prime Steakhouse at Cape Sienna. I had his profile before meeting him and this showed the background of a typical Italian Chef. Grandmother cooking (in this case for the Rothschild family in Paris in the 1930’s) his mother a chef, Francesco starting in hospitality at 16 as a bell boy, then a staff shortage getting him into the kitchen to help and the rest is history. Typical path then to role of junior chef, studying at Hotel Schools and obtaining Three (3) Sommelier degrees then working around Europe, America, Middle East and Asia. I have interviewed many Chef and this pattern is fairly common arriving in Bangkok in 2003 for a special 15 day assignment- he stayed, got married to a Thai lady and then moved to Phuket in 2010. But there is far more to this Sardinian Chef and Plum Prime Steakhouse at Cape Sienna. The Restaurant started repositioning in November 2016. Prior to that 70% of the Plum guests were inhouse guests. In many ways, it was a little out of the way and not on the radar for many residents. Chef Francesco is a bit of a food history buff and has researched the origins of

many foods especially sauces whether it is the 1938 Lexington Dip (the basis for BBQ sauce) or the origins of the traditional way for Beef Carpaccio (not small thinly sliced) but the large thin slices of raw beef- he serves it on a bed of lettuce. His French Bordelaise sauce takes 7 days to make and is served in a small dish under a flame (the artist’s touch). The Restaurant opens at 6:00 PM just in time for a spectacular sunset and view. You have a choice of inside in the air-conditioning or outside to enjoy the breeze. Be prepared though as there is a floor of steps to get to the elevator and another floor to climb at the end of the elevator- but the view is worth it. Plum is perched high above southern Kamala so you can slowly contemplate the wonders of this world including Thailand. It slows you down- especially important as all dishes are cooked fresh on demand and not pre-cooked like many restaurants. Whilst called Plum Prime Steakhousethere are also some great fusion dishes and seafood dishes as alternatives. For meat eaters there are great steaks from USA and Australia all served simply as just a meat dish, accompanied by a selection of individually presented sauces- Lexington Dip (BBQ), Argentinian Chimichurri Steak Sauce, traditional French Béarnaise Sauce and a warming Bordelaise sauce. You can then choose your own compliment from 10 side dishes (at about 120 Baht each) with about

120 wines to choose from. Menus are presented on a laptop with photos and backgrounds to sauces etc just a click away. The menu changes regularly according to the availability of ingredients. For those who struggle to decide what to order, there is a Degustation menu of 6 items for 1,890 baht for 2 people. A special treat is to understand Chef Francesco is a Single Malt Whisky aficionado so Plum has a trolley of some 20 odd whisky’s to choose from at the end of the meal. So you can finish your evening in style. In Chef Francesco, we have a chef that just wants to be a Chef, is driven to learn and expand his knowledge and understands that a good restaurant has to be consistent and delivering what the Fine Dining market wants while keeping prices reasonable. In-house guests now represent about 30% and residents and high end tourists are up to 70%. When asked what the life of a Chef is all about- he responds it is like being in a maze. It is a JOURNEY and you don’t always know where you are going. It is not the destination, it is forever moving and seeking something special without ever getting out. Иногда по рекомендациям на Trip Advisor или совету друзей мы идем в ресторан за отличным шеф-поваром, хотя чаще всего нам так и не доводится с ним познакомиться.

Недавно мне довелось пообщаться с шефом Франческо Греко из Plum Prime Steakhouse в Cape Sienna. Я ознакомился с его досье перед встречей, так что имел в голове образ типичного итальянского шефа из династии поваров. Бабушка Франческо готовила для семьи Ротшильдов в 30‑е годы прошлого века, мама — тоже шеф, ну а сам Франческо начал карьеру в сфере гостеприимства в 16 лет в качестве коридорного, затем случайно попал на кухню и так там и остался. Франческо затем стал младшим шеф-поваром, отучился в гостиничной школе, получил три диплома сомелье, после чего работал в Европе, Америке, на Ближнем Востоке и в Азии. Надо сказать, я общался со многими шеф-поварами, и такая модель карьеры довольно распространена: приехав в Бангкок в 2003 году всего по двухнедельному контракту, Франческо остался, женился на тайской девушке и перебрался на Пхукет в 2010 году. Сейчас он заправляет Plum Prime Steakhouse, который решил изменить позиционирование в ноябре 2016 года. До этого момента порядка 70 % гостей ресторана были постояльцами Cape Sienna.

Так что заведения не было на радарах островитян в целом. Франческо — любитель гастрономической истории и исследовал происхождение многих продуктов, особенно соусов, будь то Lexington (основа для соусов BBQ) или исконный способ производства карпаччо (не мелко нарезанной говядины, а большие ломтики, которые шеф подает на листьях салата). Его французский соус бордолез готовится 7 дней и подается в небольшом блюде, эффектности которому добавляет пламя (авторский штрих Франческо). Ресторан открывается в 18:00 — идеальное время для наслаждения закатом и видами Пхукета. На выбор вы можете занять столик в кондиционируемом помещении или на открытой террасе. Plum находится высоко над южной частью Камалы. Несмотря на то, что в названии заведения фигурирует стейкхаус, здесь вам приготовят и морепродукты, и любое фьюжн-блюдо. Кстати, что важно, каждое блюдо готовится индивидуально по вашему заказу, а не заранее, как это частенько бывает. Любого мясоеда здесь ждет настоящий праздник: лучшие стейки родом из США и Австралии подаются без лишнего — только соус составляет им компанию. Все меню с фотографиями представлено на дисплее и меняется в зависимости от сезона и доступности ингредиентов. Особое удовольствие знать, что шеф Франческо — поклонник односолодового виски, так что в Plum вы увидите телегу с 20 сортами этого благородного напитка, который станет достойным завершающим аккордом вечера. Резюмируя выше сказанное, скажу, что Франческо являет собой пример шеф-повара, который всегда в поисках новых знаний и который понимает, что хороший ресторан должен быть последовательным и отвечать требованиям высокой кухни, не завышая при этом ценник. Кстати, сейчас 70 % посетителей — это не постояльцы отеля, а жители острова и обеспеченные туристы. Когда я спросил Франческо, что такое жизнь шеф-повара, он ответил, что она похожа на лабиринт. Are sea views a driver of price for Phuket condominiums? While Phuket is an island, most property buyers are led to believe that sea views or proximity to the ocean are a key driver of real estate value. Fact or fiction? According to data from leading online marketplace FazWaz.com the answer lays inside the numbers. Looking at Phuket’s primary and secondary condominium sector and analyzing pricing points from the ocean up to ten kilometers inland, what is clear is developers and sellers are not maximizing what is one of the leading USP’s in the trade – location, location, location. Based on the Phuket numbers the average value of condominium units located from the oceanfront up to just under two kilometers away is THB100,000 per square meter, while the number actually escalates up to up to THB117,000 psm at a distance of two kilometers. Getting inside the data, what has driven the later number is actually views versus direct proximity to the beach. Once you move inland on the island and the views disappear, the mean average rapidly drops dramatically to THB34,000 per square meter at midway point between three and four kilometers to approximately THB34,000 psm. The storyline here is how developers have used low-cost land and delivered entry point pricing. Underlying land cost remains a critical component of ultimate condominium pricing throughout Phuket. As you shift away from the beach to increasingly urban areas inland from four to six kilometers, the pricing surges upward

again with much product in the THB80,000.00 per square meter to 120,000.00 psm tier. This recurs again when viewing city properties of eight to ten kilometers with pricing averaging THB80,000 psm to 90,000 per square meter. Urban land prices and strong demand are key factors propelling numbers. What is clear in the FazWaz data are two things. First is that unlike many comparable resort real estate markets, that developers have been unable to maximize premium pricing levels in relationship to properties near to the ocean. Sea views seem to still carry greater weighting with both developers and owners. Second is that inland properties are rapidly pushing up in value as a result of key commercial, retail and transportation infrastructure. Впрочем, если вы думаете, что тенденция сохраняется и дальше в центр острова, то ошибаетесь. Уже на удалении от четырех до шести километров квадратный метр стоит от 80 тысяч до 120 тысяч батов. А в диапазоне от восьми до 10 км в глубь острова цена опять немного снижается,

составляя от 80 до 90 тысяч батов за квадратный метр. Цены урбанистических районов и высокий спрос — вот основной движок цен на рынке. Данные FazWaz говорят о двух вещах: во‑первых, в отличие от многих сопоставимых с Пхукетом курортных рынков недвижимости, здесь девелоперы не смогли извлечь выгоду из локации жилья премиум-класса вблизи моря. И тем не менее, расположение еще играет важную роль как для продавцов, так и для покупателей. Million Dollar Baby Marcela Soto Prats is a Phuket based Muay Thai fighter who works as a nutritionist at Thanyapura Health & Sports Resort. Hailing from the tropical island of Costa Rica, the diminutive brunette is a picture feminine beauty and health. But appearances can be deceiving – beneath Marcela’s beaming smile and friendly manner beats the heart of a fierce warrior. In conversation with RL Magazine Marcela spoke about breaking into the male dominated world of Muay Thai, her passion to succeed, gender equality, the women who inspire her and her new life here in Phuket. Photo Anka Mua: Irina Sycheva I’m from Costa Rica which is in many ways quite similar to Phuket. If you love Phuket you’re going to love Costa Rica. It’s a small country with a beautiful natural environment and lovely warm tropical weather. I am from the capital San Jose, but it’s not a big city like Moscow or Bangkok, it’s small, actually the whole country is quite small. I lived just one hour away from the beach, and my parents have a beach house, so I would usually spend half of the week there. In Costa Rica we have an expression ‘pura vida’ which literally means «pure life» and it sums up life in Costa Rica perfectly. We don’t have big issues, our country is very secure, I love it, and I guess the only reason I decided to move to Phuket was to train in Muai Thai. I’ve been an athlete all of my life. Before I ever started training in any combat sport, I loved swimming and would swim twice a day. In Costa Rica we have good waves and when I was growing up I spent every weekend surfing at my parent’s beach house. That’s something I really miss because here in Phuket the surf is quite seasonal and the waves are not as good as back home. I thought a lot about whether to go to Bangkok or Phuket. But I decided that I really didn’t want to go to a big crowded city. I wanted to train and fight real Muay Thai and when I first came here to Phuket it was incredible — it felt like home. One day in Costa Rica my friend took me to a Muay Thai gym and told me «you’re gonna love this». So that’s how it all started. Over time I started to get better and eventually my trainer asked me if I wanted to have a real fight in the ring. But in Costa Rica there are not many girl fighters, so I went to the USA to participate in a championship competition — but it didn’t go very well. I felt so frustrated and couldn’t figure out what was wrong, but then I realized that these girls were much more experienced and had competed in many more fights than me. Another problem was my weight, because I’m very light, about 50 kilos, and there are not many fighters in this weight category in America. So the decision to go to Thailand, the home of Muay Thai, seemed like the best way to get more experience and be able to compete against more girls in my same weight group. So when I graduated from university, I quickly organised everything and travelled straight to Thailand. I was lucky to get sponsorship from a gym, which is really difficult — that doesn’t

INTERVIEW / ИНТЕРВЬЮ normally happen. Since that day I lived the life of a professional fighter and have had to deal with all the challenges that came with that. I trained hard and had fights every two weeks. All I did everyday was train, eat and sleep. That was my life for about four years — from 2010 until about 2014. I went back home for one year and then my husband got a job offer from a Phuket-based gym — that’s where I train now. So I decided to apply for a job as a nutritionist at Thanyapura, because I didn’t want to be just a fighter anymore. Now I have much more balance in my life, which is very satisfying. As a nutritionist, I work together with a chef to help make balanced and healthy meals. He is the main creative person behind a dish, but when we finally finish a new dish, we both try it and discuss what should be changed or added, or what kind of sauce would work well with it. The excellent food at Thanyapura is a result of a lot of hard work. I am not completely vegan but my diet is about 80 % plant-based. In the morning I can have a few slices of fruit, than I go for a run, than right before training I would usually have some matcha tea with almond milk. Then after I train I have breakfast at Thanyapura — maybe eggs with avocado on toast. For lunch it could be beans or fish, or sometimes chicken. At 3:30pm I have a snack — usually something light like fruit and cashews. Than I train from 4:30pm until about 7pm and after that I will have something for recovery — maybe matcha tea with almond milk again. In the evening when I get home I usually cook something for myself and my husband — most of the time it would be something with protein and plant-based — for instance tomatoes with mozzarella and pesto. If you really want to dedicate yourself to this sport, and become a real fighter, you have to come to live in Thailand for at least a year. It’s different to the way you get trained in any other part of the world. Here it’s totally challenging. As for the money, you have to have at least 30,000 baht per month for the gym and living expenses and that’s still really basic. You

You will have to train 6‑7 hours per day and it’s really hard. I’ve really adopted the Muay Thai lifestyle and even though I was disciplined in my training back home before I started fighting, I am even more disciplined now. I look up to Valentina Shevchenko as a inspiring example of an extremely focused fighter. Her hard work and dedication has led to success in both Muay Thai and MMA. She says that in the macho world of combat sports, women have to work even harder than men to succeed. It would be a lie if I said that women are treated the same as men in this sport. In Thailand, just 20 years ago, women were not allowed to fight at all, and girls are still paid much less than men in professional Muay Thai. There are only two big stadiums (the most famous ones in Thailand, that women can’t fight, but in the rest of stadiums we can fight), I can’t even enter the ring in them (women can’t even touch the ring in those 2 stadiums — Lumpinee and Rajadamnern). But it is good to see that more and more people are coming out to watch female fights — I’ve really noticed the difference in the last year. I know some male Muay Thai fighters who get paid three to four times more than me, even though they fight at same level as I do. What it boils down to is that guys can live on the money they get for fighting. For girls it’s much harder and I really admire Thai women who make a their living through paid fights only.

I don’t consider myself as a feminist, but I try to be equal. I hate it when I hear people say «Oh, I don’t like to watch women playing football, because they play like girls». But things are changing, now it’s fascinating how women can be so inspiring through their sport. Men don’t watch them just thinking about their their gender or beauty but because they are really good at their sport. Of course we are different physiologically — but in my case it just made me want to work harder to achieve better results. Maybe I’m not as strong but I can use my intelligence to plan good strategy. Don’t give up — that’s the most important thing. When you see me fighting, you might think that it all comes naturally. But I didn’t. I had to work hard and I still do.

Я из Коста-Рики, которая во многом похожа на Пхукет. Это маленькая страна с теплым тропическим климатом и в окружении чудесной природы. Сан-Хосе хоть и является столицей, не похож на большинство больших городов, вроде Бангкока или Москвы. Костариканцы называют свой стиль жизни «pura vida», что буквально означает «чистая жизнь». Это выражение идеально описывает жизнь на моей родине. У нас нет серьезных проблем, страна очень спокойная. Я думаю, что единственная причина, по которой я изначально переехала на Пхукет, — тайский бокс. Всю свою жизнь я была спортсменом. До занятий боевыми искусствами я плавала дважды в день. В Коста-Рике сильные волны, так что я занималась еще и серфингом каждый уикенд. По серфингу я очень скучаю на Пхукете, здесь с волнами все не так хорошо, как дома. Я много думала, где я хочу жить — в Бангкоке или на Пхукете. Решила в пользу последнего, поскольку большие города — все‑таки не мое. Все что я хотела — это заниматься муай тай, и Пхукет идеально для этого подходит. Здесь я чувствую себя как дома. Однажды мой друг привел меня в спортзал, где занимался тайским боксом, и сказал: «Тебе это понравится». Так все и началось. У любого занятия должна быть цель, так что, когда мой тренер спросил, не хочу ли я выйти на ринг, конечно, я ответила, что хочу. И в какой‑то момент меня осенило, что мои американские соперницы просто имеют больше возможности драться на ринге, чем я в своей стране. Мое положение усугублял еще и мой вес — всего 50 кг. Найти девушек в такой весовой категории среди бойцов в Коста-Рике было той еще задачей. В общем, стало очевидно, что нужно ехать на родину муай тай — в Таиланд, что я и сделала сразу же после университета. Жизнь профессионального бойца началась для меня, когда я получила спонсорскую поддержку в клубе, где тренировалась, что происходит крайне редко. Я тренировалась постоянно и каждые две недели выходила на ринг. В таком режиме я прожила где‑то четыре года.

INTERVIEW / ИНТЕРВЬЮ Я уехала из Таиланда в Коста-Рику на год, а потом мой муж получил предложение работать на Пхукете в клубе, где я тренируюсь в настоящее время. Я не хотела возвращаться и заниматься только тайским боксом, поэтому я нашла работу специалиста по здоровому питанию в Thanyapura. В Thanyapura я работаю вместе с шеф-поваром над созданием сбалансированного здорового меню, но все же он — главный креативщик в этом вопросе. Так или иначе, когда рождается новое блюдо, мы пробуем, обсуждаем, думаем над его совершенствованием, так что все наши блюда — это результат долгой кропотливой совместной работы. Я не веган, хотя 80 % моего рациона составляют растительные продукты. По утрам я могу перекусить каким‑нибудь фруктом, потом иду на пробежку, после которой могу выпить чай матча с миндальным молоком и пойти на тренировку. На работе я завтракаю яичницей с авокадо на тосте. На ланч я могу съесть рыбу, иногда курицу. После 3‑часовой тренировки я еду домой и готовлю ужин, обычно это что‑то легкое. Сегодня, например, были помидоры с песто и сыром моцарелла. Если вы планируете посвятить себя спорту, тем более, боевому, вам нужно переехать в Таиланд, по меньшей мере, на один год. Тренировки здесь принципиально отличаются от занятий в любой другой точке мира. Это настоящее испытание. Что касается денег, то вам понадобится

по меньшей мере 30 тысяч батов в месяц, чтобы покрыть проживание и оплату занятий в клубе, которые стоят недешево. Я думаю, что этих денег хватит на самые базовые нужды, без изысков. Но главное, к чему нужно приготовиться, это к изнурительным тренировкам по 6‑7 часов в день. Не рассчитывайте, что эта поездка станет отдыхом. Валентина Шевченко — вдохновляющий пример целеустремленного бойца (киргизский боец MMA — прим. ред.). Она усердно трудилась, прежде чем достичь высот как тайском боксе, так и в смешанных единоборствах. Будет неправдой, если я скажу, что к женщинам и мужчинам в тайском боксе одинаковое отношение. Еще и 20 лет не прошло, как девушкам разрешили выходить на ринг в этой стране, и до сих пор женщины зарабатывают меньше мужчин. На Пхукете только два крупных стадиона, и я не могу там выступать, потому что я — девушка. В то же время, есть положительные тенденции: все больше людей интересуются женскими боями. Я знаю несколько бойцов среди мужчин, которые не дотягивают до моего уровня и все равно зарабатывают в три-четыре раза больше. Парни действительно могут жить на эти деньги, в случае с девушками все сложнее. И я искренне восхищаюсь женщинами-бойцами, которым удается жить на гонорары от боев. Не думаю, что я — феминистка. Я считаю, что все должно быть справедливо.

Ненавижу, когда говорят что‑то вроде: «Женский футбол — это скучно». Слава богу, ситуация меняется и мужчины начинают смотреть женские бои не из‑за красоты участниц, а потому что они классно делают свое дело. Мужчины изначально сильнее. Но я могу быть умнее и грамотнее выстраивать стратегию. Не сдавайтесь — это основа всего. Если вы увидите меня на ринге, вам может показаться, что я была такой всегда. Но в действительности мне пришлось много работать, чтобы стать, кем я являюсь сейчас, и я продолжаю это делать.

Outspoken Russian ballerina talks to RL about her controversial life Famed ballerina, singer, actress and philanthropist Anastasia Volochkova is a regular target of the tabloid press in her native Russia, and internationally, who can’t seem to get enough scandalous gossip on her flamboyant lifestyle and outspoken political opinions. During her recent visit to Phuket the statuesque blonde bombshell took a leading role in several sensational entertainment projects organised by Culture rEvolution in partnership with Maikhao Dream Villa Resort & Spa. During RL’s interview with Anastasia, we couldn’t help but ask what it’s like to have her private life splashed all over the covers of tabloid newspapers. But we also found time to discuss her passion for the philanthropic work which currently takes up much of her time, as well as her impressions of Phuket. What do you devote most of your time to currently? At the moment it probably my concert activities. My charity project “Symphony of Goodness” puts on a series of concerts, all of which are free for people to attend. I manage to organize between 70 to 80 of these events every year. Each concert features performances by extremely talented children from all over Russia. Of course, I also give a lot of attention to my daughter Arisha, she is a very interesting young lady and we are like best friends. You are constantly portrayed as hero ine in Russia’s tabloid media

and newspapers like the UK’s Daily Mail for your outspoken politics. Yet paradoxically, they also manage to project a negative image of you with their scandalous stories involving your personal life. What do you think makes the the tabloids both attracted and repulsed by you? Is their any truth to their stereotypes? Of course, there is some negative images of me in the media, which is also compounded by the people who wish me ill, who I think are simply jealous of my success, beauty, freedom and independence. We live in a time when even minor events in a celebrity’s life, positive or negative, are regularly turned into a scandal to make headlines for the media. So I suppose the fact that I am a regular heroine of the tabloid media only confirms that my personality and lifestyle is of interest to a lot of people. Which do you prefer Phuket or the Maldives? To be honest, I do not go to Phuket very often, in fact, my mother and daughter come here more often than me. For me, Phuket can be somewhat noisy, but this time it was different, because my friend recommended that I stay at this absolutely extraordinary place – Maikhao Dream Villa Resort & Spa – it’s really amazing, I feel a complete sense of solitude there. I also like the Maldives very much, I feel very much in harmony there. It is the only

Of course, it is an elite place to take a holiday – each villa has several rooms, a kitchen, a swimming pool and a Jacuzzi – but it is all is hidden away in a very secluded setting. You participated in the show of your famous fashion designer friend Yana Shevchenko, which was organized by Mai Khao Dream, can you tell us how it went? I was very inspired by the creativity of these events. I had even considered dancing [the classic Russian ballet] The Dying Swan, but unfortunately I did not have time to organize the delivery of a costume from Russia. So we decided to keep this idea for a future show. The fact that Russian artists and musicians are being brought here to perform is fantastic, and it really shows just how many Russians have decided to visit or make their lives in Phuket, I wish prosperity to this beautiful place, and I hope it preserves its special charm.

Чему вы посвящаете большую часть времени? — Сейчас, наверное, концертной деятельности. Она, в основном, носит благотворительный характер. Это целый фестиваль «Симфония добра», который включает в себя серию концертов, все зрители которых приглашаются совершенно бесплатно. Сейчас в качестве актрисы я также задействована в проекте «Леди», который был специально для меня изменен и воссоздан. И, конечно же, много внимания я уделяю своей дочке Арише. Мы с ней очень-очень хорошие друзья. — Вы — постоянная героиня светской хроники. При этом, нельзя сказать, что в прессе у вас положительный образ. Зачастую, вы фигурируете в скандальных историях. Это особенность вашего характера, попадать в конфликтные ситуации, или что‑то еще? — Я люблю быть, а не слыть. Конечно, есть некий негативный образ, но он сложен моими недоброжелателями, которые не прощают мне успеха, красоты, свободы и независимости. Meet Russian fashion designer Yana Shevchenko Over the past decade designer Yana Shevchenko, together with her creative daughter Anastasia, has climbed to the top of Moscow’s fickle fashion scene and somehow managed to stay there. Her early recognition came from her unique take on traditional Russian ornamental shawls. But she soon parlayed this initial success into a blockbuster fashion brand called YanaStasia. Yana recently visited Phuket and RL Magazine was lucky enough to have the chance to ask her a few questions. We spoke to her behind the scenes at her recent fashion showcase in Phuket which dazzled islanders:

Yana, how long have you been designing clothes, and why you decided to create a brand inspired by Russian traditional ornamental shawls? I have been designing clothes for many years. At first, I only made clothes for myself and sometimes for friends who liked my style. One day I got the idea to create a small collection which would incorporate the style of traditional Russian Pavlov-Posad ornamental shawls. My friends liked it so much that I decided to make several models to sell. As a result, a brand was founded, which I gave the name YanaStasia – from the combination of my name Yana, and the name of my daughter Anastasia, who by that time had already participated in the development of the collection with me. How do you share responsibilities with your daughter and not have professional conflicts, who has to make the concessions? We have very warm relationship in both in our work and personal lives. Therefore quarrels and conflicts really don’t happen, we both work together to realize the different ideas that inspire us. Thanks to this, very diverse collections are created: from swimwear to ski clothing. Each of us brings something to the brand, our symbiotic relationship is so strong that the brand has existed for more than seven years – this is somewhat unusual in the Moscow fashion industry, where every year there are new brands but for some reason they don’t last.

Как создать модный бренд из павлопосадского платка Известный русский модельер Яна Шевченко, у которой одеваются Анастасия Волочкова, Сергей Зверев и другие звезды, рассказала, как из павлопосадского платка родился бренд YanaStasia, о творческом союзе с дочерью и назвала мужчину мечты.

Яна, давно ли вы занимаетесь дизайном одежды, и что вас вдохновило на создание бренда? Почему именно русские орнаменты? — Дизайном одежды я занимаюсь много лет. Сначала, шила только для себя, и для друзей, которым нравился мой стиль. Однажды в голову пришла идея сшить небольшую коллекцию из павлопосадского платка. Она так понравилась друзьям, что я решила сшить несколько моделей на продажу. В итоге получился бренд, который получил имя YanaStasia — соединение моего имени Яна и имя моей дочки Анастасии, которая к тому времени уже активно принимала участие в разработке коллекции вместе со мной. Как вы делите обязанности с дочерью и не бывает ли у вас профессиональных конфликтов, кому приходится идти на уступки? — Наши отношения с дочкой очень дружные и в жизни и на профессиональном поприще. Поэтому ссор и конфликтов не бывает, мы обе реализуем идеи, которые

кажутся нам вдохновляющими. Благодаря этому получаются очень разноплановые коллекции: от купальников до горнолыжной одежды. Каждый привносит в бренд частицу себя, поэтому наш тандем такой крепкий и бренд существует уже более 7 лет, а это хороший стаж в московской модной индустрии, где каждый год возникают новые бренды, но по тем или иным причинам закрываются. В ваших ярких показах регулярно участвуют российские звезды шоу-бизнеса — Филипп Киркоров, Лолита, Шура, Волочкова и т. д. Как вам удалось покорить столь избирательную публику, на вас счет? И носят ли звезды вашу одежду в повседневной жизни? — Если я скажу, что работаю со звездами — это будет не совсем правда. Мы, скорее дружим. Со многими, например, с Лолитой, Настей Волочковой, Сережей Зверевым мы дружим очень близко уже много лет. Поэтому привлекать их к работе с брендом не пришлось — они сами с удовольствием участвуют в наших показах

и одевают нашу одежду на выступления, используют её во время фотосессией и, конечно, носят в повседневной жизни. Dmitry Yankovsky The Voice of Russian Opera Dmitry Yankovsky, ex-drummer turned soloist for the Moscow Helikon-Opera Theater, who also played five roles in the musical “Beauty and the Beast”, recently sat down with RL to tell us about his favorite contemporary music and his first ever performance in Phuket.

The project “Сulture rEvolution” which brought you to Phuket, combines modern and classical music for concerts performed in island’s relaxed tropical surroundings. Have you ever participated in such an unusual project? Frankly, this was an extreme and totally new experience for us. We were faced with the fact that some of the instruments were off-key because of the heat, something we’ve never had to deal with before. So it was something of a challenge. Do you listen to modern music? I am a music lover, I listen to almost everything. For example, one of my favorite bands is System Of A Down, which I was a huge fan of in my youth. But now, in my 30s, I listen to all types of music – folk, rap, jazz and ethnic music, I’ll try anything. You started as a percussionist. Did you dream of becoming a drummer? Why did you change your mind?

Like many teenagers, a friend I started a band together in which I played drums and sang and my friend played guitar. My parents picked up on my passion and decided to decided to try to channel it in a more professional direction. So at the age of 10 I started playing drums at Rimsky-Korsakov Music School St Petersburg. Then at 16, I started taking classes in vocal performance – from that moment on my destiny changed and I began to study and fall in love with opera singing. You were nominated for the record for a performer playing the most roles in a single play “Beauty and the Beast” for The Guinness Book of World Records. Tell us about this experience, how is it possible to play five roles at once? The Stage Entertainment company brought “Beauty and the Beast” to the Moscow stage, and I was honored to be able play the five main roles, including the beast. I didn’t play them all at once, of course, but took turns playing the different roles. I had plenty of time to practice too, as we played about 550 performanc-

es in two years – that’s 34 performances a month. You tour a lot. Where is your favorite place to perform? It’s very nice in Phuket, but my favorite vacation spot is still our family cottage in the Leningrad region. There I have my bathhouse and all the other conditions needed for rest and relaxation. As for the tour, thanks to organizers of the festival “Culture rEvolution”, we broke all of our previous attendance records in Phuket, and I think this place will be remembered as one of the top tour spots for the project “Neoclassic”. Could you share your plans with our readers? Where are you heading after Phuket? You can see me performing at Moscow’s Gelikon-Opera where I take part in different plays. On March 26, we will perform at the rock festival “Revolution”, and on May 25 we will be performing a major concert with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra at one of grandest venues in the city – the Palace of the Unions.

Голос российской оперы Дмитрий Янковский В самом начале весны на Пхукете с серией выступлений побывали музыканты проекта «NeoClassic» во главе с Дмитрием Янковским. Cолист московского театра «Геликон-Опера», исполнитель пяти ролей в мюзикле «Красавица и чудовище», а в прошлом еще и барабанщик рассказал о любимой современной музыке и экстремальных условиях на Пхукете.

Проект «Сulture rEvolution» сочетает современное и классическое, да еще и в тропической обстановке. Вам приходилось раньше участвовать в таких экспериментальных проектах? — Для нас выступление в тропиках стало новым экстремальным опытом. Мы впервые столкнулись с тем, что инструменты стали вести себя непредсказуемо — у кого-торасстроились, у других канифоль (канифолью натирают смычки для игры на струнных — прим.ред.) расплавилась на жаре. Так что мы прошли через своего рода испытние.

— А к современной музыке как относитесь? Есть ли что‑то близкое вам лично? — Я — меломан. Слушаю почти все, есть любимые группы, например, System Of A Down, но это просто группа моей молодости. Ну а в свои 30 лет я слушаю любую музыку, начиная от фолка, рэпа, экстрады, джаза и знаканчивая этнической.

Где любите бывать больше всего? — На Пхукете очень здорово, но все‑таки, наверное, для меня любимое место отдыха — это наша семейная дача в Ленинградской области, где есть моя баня и все

остальные условия для отдыха и умиротворения. Что касается гастролей, то благодаря организаторам фестиваля «Culture rЕvolution» Пхукет побил все рекорды наших гастрольных маршрутов, и я думаю, что это место встанет в топ-100 лучших гастролей проекта «Neoclassic». — Поделитесь с нашими читателями планами на ближайшее будущее, любимыми проектами, в которых вас можно увидеть, помимо «Culture Evolution» на Пхукете? — Увидеть меня можно и в московском оперном театре «Геликон-Опера», где я участвую в разных постановках. Также я принимаю участие в различных постановках, мюзиклах, шоу. 26 марта у нас состоится выступление в рамках рок-фестиваля «Revolution», а 25 мая — крупный концерт с Симфоническим оркестром в Москве, на одной из лучших площадок — в Колонном зале Дома Союзов. «NeoClassic» — музыкальный проект Дмитрия Янковского, соединяющий шедевры классической музыки с эстрадными хитами. Любимые, всем знакомые поп и рок песни, исполняются оперным певцом в сопровождении живых классических инструментов и начинают звучать как оперные арии.

— Начинали вы как перкуссионист, то есть мечтали стать барабанщиком? Почему передумали? — Как любой подросток, тем более семья у меня довольно музыкальная, я в подростковом возрасте решил вместе с другом создать свою группу. Мы организовали коллектив, в котором я играл на барабанах и пел, а мой друг играл на гитаре. Мои родители подхватили мое увлечение и решили перевести это в более профессиональное русло, где‑то с 10 до 15 лет я занимался классической постановкой руки на ударной установке, играл на литаврах, ксилофоне в музыкальной школе имени Римкого-Корсакова. What to give the person who has everything? Maybe, new Bugatti yacht The makers of the world’s fastest production super sports car, Bugatti, and the world’s largest motor yacht builder, Palmer Johnson, are embarking on a joint project. Under licence granted by Bugatti, the world renowned yacht brand has designed a new series of stunning and elegant open carbon-fibre sport yachts, featuring distinctive Bugatti design elements and advanced materials. The series bears the Niniette name and is available in three models from 42ft to 88ft. Prices for the smallest model start at 86.4 million baht. Company founder Ettore Bugatti had already developed racing boats and yachts in the 1930s. The visionary’s very personal relationship with his yachts is evident from the names he gave them: Niniette was the pet name of his daughter Lidia.

Now, more than 80 years later, this tradition has been revived and the brand motto of “Art, Form, Technique” is once again being applied to a boat. As with the sports cars, the Bugatti design team followed its approach “Form follows Performance”. The luxury yacht with its carbon fibre hull takes up style elements of Bugatti’s iconic classic cars and combines them with the revolutionary hull shape of Palmer Johnson’s SuperSport series. The design is characterized by the falling shoulder line of the Bugatti Type 57 C Atalante and the perfectly balanced proportions of the Type 41 Royale. Purist, flowing surfaces and lines create a per-

fect equilibrium between elegance and sportiness. The close link between the Palmer Johnson Niniette and Bugatti’s design DNA is also evident from the accentuated waist line and the typical two-tone color scheme. Viewed from the side, the design is highlighted by a contrasting blend of ultra-strong ultra-lightweight titanium and dark blue exposed carbon fiber. On deck, the combination of a brown bubinga, maple or naturally blue morta oak wood provides a warm contrast with the lightweight high-tech materials. Oh and did we mention it also comes with a jacuzzi and a fire pit? Only 66 of these will ever be built, making it even more exclusive than the Bugatti Chiron supercar, which is not capped in terms of total units available but Bugatti can only make 70 per year.

A Bigger Splash – Songkran The Songkran festival is the traditional Thai New Year’s Day and is celebrated from 13 April to 15 April. History of Songkran The word Songkran is from the Sanskrit language and means the passage of the sun from one sign of the Zodiac to another. That means there are twelve Songkrans each year, but the significance of the this Songkran (sometimes called Major Songkran to distinguish it from the others) is when the sun enters the sign of Aries the Ram. The particular event was also closely related to the Vernal Equinox. Celebrating New Year at the time of the Vernal Equinox was very common in the past. The Songkran celebration is similar to those of the Indian Holi Festival, the Chinese Ching Ming, and the Christian Festival of Easter. Indeed April Fool’s Day probably originated as mocking those who didn’t accept the switch of New Year from April to January in France in the Sixteenth Century. The date was originally set by astrological calculations, but it is now fixed on 13 April. The festival may be extended if some of the celebrations fall over a weekend. In Thailand, New Year is now officially celebrated on January 1, in line with almost all other countries. Songkran was the official New Year until 1888, when it was switched to a fixed date of 1 April. It wasn’t until 1940, that this date was then shifted to 1 January.

Making a splash The most famous aspect of the Songkran celebrations is the throwing of water. The custom originates from spring cleaning aspect of Songkran. Part of the ritual was the cleaning of images of Buddha. Using the ‘blessed’ water that cleaned the images to soak other people is seen as a way of paying respect and bring good fortune. It also doesn’t hurt that April is the hottest part of the year in Thailand, so being soaked is a refreshing escape from the heat and humidity. Nowadays Thais will walk the streets having ‘water fights’ using containers of water or water guns, or stand at the side of roads with a hose and soak any one who passes by. You may also get covered in chalk, a custom originating from the chalk used by monks to mark blessings. This combination of water and powder is almost identical to the celebrations of Holi, and indeed, it maybe that the customs originated in India as certainly Songkran is celebrated more widely and longer in the Northern part of Thailand.

Did you know? In ancient times, the dates of Songkran and the Vernal Equinox would have been closer, but they have shifted due to an effect called procession, where the Earth wobbles on its axis over a 25,000 year period.

Even more interesting is that the custom of water fights pops up in a distant place at the same time of year. Dyngus Day is celebrated on Easter Monday in Poland, and on the Monday the custom is that boys get to soak girls with water, but on the Tuesday, the girls get to throw crockery at the boys — again the water and powder combination. As mentioned, Songkran is a Spring Cleaning Day, both physically and spiritually. On the physical side, in addition to cleaning other customs are that anything old and useless must be thrown away or else it will bring bad luck to the owner. On the spiritual side, some people make New Year resolutions.

Healthy Aging starts in Kindergarten No, this is not a sales slogan for a new medication. It is the conclusion of an alarming shortcoming of our health care system and the irresponsible life styles we have adopted, which lead self-inflicted to diseases and sickness. The health care system is defined as the organization of people, institutions, and resources that deliver health care services to meet our health needs. It is getting better all the time at treating all kinds of conditions. But in spite of advances in medical technology, we seem to be getting sicker and sicker. And really alarming is that what used to be mostly senior citizen health concerns have now gone mainstream. Elementary school kids are defined by their asthma and allergies, attention deficit disorders, weight issues and diabetes. Youngsters are also increasingly suffering from overweight and obesity afflictions, stress, cardiovascular conditions and cancer. If our children don’t feel good we immediately take them to the hospital. And in today’s drug based culture, «intervention» means prescribing the latest pharmaceuticals - even if recommending commonsense nutrition (like the good old chicken

soup) and lifestyle changes (a little bit more exercise) would do the job. And the result of this is frightening. People do not know any longer how to take care of themselves and their children, they rely on the system to do so. Another major problem in our societies is, that we allow the food industry to dictate what and how we eat. We all know that a healthy nutrition is vital for a healthy body, especially for children. But we do not eat healthy any longer. In food shops the fresh fruit and vegetable section are tiny, the convenient and instant food isles miles long. They are stacked with processed food in unbelievable varieties containing masses of sugar, saturated fats, preservatives and other unhealthy ingredience. Pasta and pizza, sugary fruit juices and soft drinks, every day meat, too many dairy products – all of this and on top of that too much TV and computer games and not enough exercise conditions the little

people perfectly to suffer under old people’s diseases. The leading causes of death nowadays are heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases, strokes, diabetes, and kidney diseases. These are life style diseases – meaning diseases associated with the way a person lives – they all are self-inflicted. And this clearly demands a different approach than medication and surgeries. So, what about preventive care, about learning as early as possible, preferably already in kindergarten, how to live a healthy life by eating the right things and by exercising on a regular bases. Meatless Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, daily exercise, water instead of juice, many behavior patterns should be learned in early childhood. So let us start to teach our children about healthy life styles from the very beginning, in order for them to have a long and happy life without having to go through the difficulty of having to change their behavior pattern and life styles when they are older. Painting my «primavera» Zoe Olivia Eyres Young was artist in residence at Mom Tri’s Villa Royale in December 2016. She will be exhibiting at Mom Tri’s Gallery until April 30, 2017. RL Magazine recently had a fascinating talk with Zoe about her life, her work and her artistic inspiration. by DAVID LINKLATER What medium do you paint in and how does it help your express yourself in your paintings? I use Driven Matisse Acrylic Paints, I researched a variety of brands and felt this paint, combined with a quality medium and impasto really worked well. As my painting method involves the layering of different colours, the fast drying qualities of acrylic paint suit me, the high quality of Matisse acrylic paints means that although the paints are acrylic, they look like oils and retain the same vibrancy that oil paints do – which I love, the colour must remain delicious!

Are you planning to enter again this year? Any hint about who you might be painting? I’m constantly painting portraits in the studio and yes, there have been some pretty high profile people walking through the studio door recently, but no, no hints, the Archibald Prize is cloaked in mystery and I don’t want to jinx the process!

Female figures and images of motherhood feature quite prominently in your work, is there an autobiographical aspect to this? I think all works that artists create are autobiographical to an extent, motherhood was an epiphany for me, where I finally felt I had a sense of purpose in the world, it was like the springtime of my life – my primavera – and so I wanted to try and depict those feelings through painting the figure in the landscape.

Your colour palette you use is quite subdued, what does this reflect? Is it influenced by the colours of the Australian landscape where you live? On my website you’ll notice a variety of different pallets over the last year, ranging from the monochromatic to pastel with a punch, though I guess my work does always sit on the more subdued notes of the colour palette. Ultimately I guess because at this point in my life I feel that way, but feelings are fleeting and times change. When I was a teenager I painted heavy charcoal works and maybe as I grow older I will return to that or move onto something more bolder. I think colour is fairly indicative of an artist’s temperament at the time and what the world is dealing them at that point.

You have been a finalist in Australia’s prestigious Archibald Prize twice with portraits of prominent women – what do you admire in these women that inspired you to paint them? Both girls broke the stereotypes in their careers, snowboarding was generally a male dominated sport and the Australian fashion scene was generally filled with blonde haired blue eyed beach girls. Torah and Sam both share a very refreshing professional, yet down to earth disposition, which I related to – happy go lucky, yet ultimately focused when it came to getting the job done.

Tell me about some of the artists that have influence and inspired you, in what ways did they influence your style? Australian Artist’s Ben Quilty, Tim Storrier and John Olsen all live near by in the countryside just south of Sydney. I relate to their work for different reasons, living in close proximity to these artists, I realised the biggest thing they all share was a very strong work ethic. I think people often misinterpret our jobs as being something more like a holiday. We’re all in the studio everyday – as [renowned American artist] Chuck Close said “inspiration is for amateurs”.

As far as influence goes, obviously Manet, Édouard Vuillard, Californian artist Richard Diebenkorn and the Australian female modernist painters, Grace Cossington Smith and Margaret Preston. I’m currently looking to 60’s films, especially Jacques Tati’s “Mon Oncle”, it’s my favourite film. Has moving from the city to the countryside had an effect on your painting style? The country side bought me the required focus to really push through with my own painting, there’s too many influences in the city. Don’t get me wrong, I love the city, but it’s just too much, too many distractions. The countryside gives me time and space to really conjure up and grasp concepts that are otherwise lost amidst the noise of the city. How did the exhibition at Mom Tri’s come about? Have you exhibited outside of Australia before? I exhibited with Mom Tri’s at the old Boathouse Gallery in 2008. My parents have a place in Phuket and in 2008 I was living here and painting, sailing and surfing. The exhibition was titled “The Colourful Island”. I spent most of my twenties in-between studying at The National Art School in Sydney and travelling throughout Asia and Europe. I’ve often exhibited my work in unconventional ways. I remember there was a cafe in Chiang Mai called Marmalade. I swapped board and food for the week whilst I painted a mural over their entire back wall – now my days on the road bartering my art for beer are well and truly over. But the spirit of painting everyday never leaves me, I have to create, it’s the same as air for me, I can’t live without it.
