The southern stretch of Patong is a colourful and intriguing area. Many small art-shops and local restaurants enhance the ambiance of this the area. Moreover, it has become one of Patong’s most buzzing entertainment hubs. The first major player to set up here was the internationally renowned Hard Rock Café. Then Hooters arrived to add to the area’s good-time vibe. And more recently, the rebranded DusitD2 hotel and bar(s). A corridor now connects the Hard Rock Café, Hooters, D2 bar, and an English-style pub due to be open in the new future. The first thing one notices about the DusitD2 is the massive glass doors leading to a big circular bar with colored LED lights. The bar serves probably some of the best mixed cocktails in Patong, with its supremely refreshing Mojito earning particularly high marks. The food is just as excellent, thanks to the culinary skills of Chef Yi-fan Chu who hails from Taiwan. He was educated in USA, and then worked in Germany, before arriving here. Here’s been in Phuket for five years now. Yi-Fan learned how to cook at a young age from his mother, and summarizes his outlook as thus: “We believe that a great meal should be a kind of journey, returning you to sources of pleasure you may have forgotten – and places you haven’t yet been.” If it is a quiet night, take the time to meet the chef, especially if you have a special function in mind and wish to discuss your requirements. These he specializes in. On the day we visited, we tried a number of dishes including: the Diver Scallops, the D2 US Burger, the US Prime Rib Eye, the Passion Fruit Pana Cotta, and our personal favorite, the D@ Signature Duck Curry. This writer has a fondness for his duck curry, and the one I enjoyed here was probably one of the best I’ve tasted in the last decade. This venue offers terrific value, including: A Thai Buffet Night Market featuring street food at 599++ Baht per person, every Friday night and An Italian Buffet Night at 699++Baht per person, every Tuesday night. However we are all hoping Chef Yi-fan introduces a Taiwanese Night featuring the spicy fare of his homeland. After all, there is a scarcity of really good Chinese food in Phuket. Maybe the talented and personable Yifan Chu is just to person to fix that shortcoming. In any case, you’ll never leave this place hungry, and anything less than utterly satisfied.

Первой ласточкой было всемирно известное Hard Rock Café. Потом подоспел Hooters, чтобы добавить громкости и вибрации в воздухе. И наконец, открылся D2 бар в обновленном отеле DusitD2. В общем, барная стойка теперь тянется от Hard Rock Café через Hooters и D2 бар к английскому пабу, который заработает вот-вот. DusitD2 встречает массивными стеклянными дверями, ведущими в большой круглый бар с разноцветными LED огнями. В баре подают, пожалуй, одни из лучших коктейлей на Патонге, а освежающий мохито вообще вне конкуренции.

За отменную кухню особое спасибо шеф-повару Йи-Фан Чу из Тайваня. Он получил образование в США, а затем поработал в Германии, прежде чем оказаться на Пхукете. Вот уже пять лет он радует нас здесь. Йи-Фана научила готовить мама, когда он был ребенком. Свой кулинарный принцип он формулирует так: “Мы считаем, что настоящая еда – это путешествие в прошлое к источнику удовольствия, который вы, возможно, забыли, или поездка туда, где вы еще не были.” Если у Йи-Фана есть свободная минутка, с ним можно обсудить какой-нибудь ваш особенный гурманский изыск. В наше посещение мы попробовали такие блюда: дайверские гребешки, американский бургер D2, американские говяжьи ребра на угле, Пана Котта из маракуйи, и на наш взгляд, лучшую утку карри от шеф-повара D@. Тайваньский поэт с особенной любовью творит свою утку,

и такого наслаждения от этого карри-шедевра я не испытывал за последнее десятилетие, пожалуй, ни разу. У заведения найдется много привлекательных неожиданностей, чтоб побаловать посетителя: тайский буфет “Ночной рынок” с уличной едой за 599++ Бат с человека каждый вечер пятницы, а вечер итальянской кухни за 699++ Бат с человека каждый вторник. Однако мы все в предвкушении, что Йи-Фан наконец-то устроит тайваньскую ночь с пряными блюдами своей далекой родины. Нам очень не хватает на Пхукете хорошей китайской кухни. Может быть, кулинарный кудесник Йи-Фан Чу – это тот человек, который призван исправить досадный недостаток. В любом случае, вы не уйдете отсюда голодным, более того вам гарантировано гастрономическое и эстетическое наслаждение для глаз, носа, желудка и отчасти, удовольствие для души. №17 Ноябрь 2014

What to do in Patong? The question sounds like the start of a long-winded joke. If you think it it's all girlie bars and dodgy discos, then you have been going out with the wrong crowd! Patong is changing and cleaning up its act just a little bit. Today there are some really cool and fun places to go. For a first stop you can't go wrong with Joe’s Downstairs. The service at cocktail bar is outstanding by Patong standards. Friendly staff, excellent and varied cocktails, Cuban cigars, and sublime snacks in a superb location – what more could you ask for? They also serve pretty good dinners and have a decent wine selection. Close by are two more good restaurants, D’Marizio, specializing in Italian fare, and Baan Rim Pa, which serves up high-end Thai food. Another option for fine dining is the 9th Floor. Top-quality in both its menu-offerings and service. A drink in the newly opened D2 bar is a must if you are planning on having a big night out. A quick shot here is sure to get the party going. As for nightclubs, "Seduction" is where the party never stops! This club manages to get the best deejays from around the world to play there. And the club is always packed with fun and friendly people; the kind rarely found in other Patong nightclubs. For an even classier night in Phuket's playful Sin City, the Blow VIP club is a hip venue for the über-cools, so make sure you are dressed for the occasion. Above all, enjoy the "sanook" -- the Thai word for fun and good times. There's nowhere in the world like Patong.

“What did Dom Perignon say to fellow monks after he invented champagne? ... ‘Come quickly, I am tasting the stars.’” Champagne occupies a special place in our culinary consciousness. It’s the sparkling cupful to celebrate success, outstanding achievement, life’s milestones and sometimes simply for the sheer pleasure of enjoying this exquisite and celebratory French wine. Many enjoy Italian Prosecco for the same kind of motives. But they are two altogether rather different kinds of “bubbly”. Strictly speaking, Champagne is a sparkling wine produced from grapes grown only in the Champagne region of France, and in accordance with a set of state-mandated regulations that includes a imperative secondary fermentation of the wine in the bottle – in order to create its famous carbonation. “Méthode Champenoise” is the means by which Champagne is produced. Although Champagne is considered the king of sparkling wines, various other “bubblies” are produced worldwide, including in Spain, Germany, South Africa, and Italy. For example, Prosecco – made from same name grape – is produced from vineyards around picturesque northeast Italy. Unlike Champagne, Prosecco usually is produced using the “Charmat” method, in which the secondary fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, making the wine less costly to produce. The dark-brown colour of a tree trunk, and the varied textures of the coconut fruits – these colours and textures are intrinsic to Phuket. Duly, such colours and and surface textures can be found on the walls covering and the furniture, as well as the outdoor accessories, and of course there are a lot of palm trees around. You can see them through the three-metre high sliding windows. Which reminds me, these windows will enable residents to enjoy Phuket's fabulous sea breezes.

Bay. The regatta began with a mixture of keelboats, catamarans, Lasers and even windsurfers. More recently the regatta has become a big boat event, attracting keelboats and ocean-going catamaran teams from around the world. As a principal fixture on the Asian Yachting Circuit, the regatta annually features upwards of 90 boats (with a record of 103 vessels in 2007) and 2,000 mariners, ranging from the Formula One of the sea lanes, the Racing Class, to live-aboard ocean cruisers, multihulls and classics. Under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King of Thailand, the Regatta is organised by the Phuket King's Cup Regatta Organising Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Province of Phuket.

King’s Cup design The winner of the regatta receives the ‘King’s Cup’, a trophy designed by renowned architect and designer ML Tridhosyuth Devakul. The trophy is made off silver and ashwood, and features nine beautiful sails emerging from the central silver column positioned on a base representing the sea, and nine bezels of widening growth under the nine sails. The final day of sailing and award presentations usually ends with a prize-giving ceremony and an extensive party with over 1,500 guests. The gathering is attended by participants, their families and friends, VIPS and hundreds of sailing enthusiasts from around the world. The proceedings traditionally conclude with a stunning fireworks display over the bay and its exclusive holiday accommodation. We are looking forward to the Kings Cup Regatta 2014!

This Megayacht has top speed of 31 knots with 2 Diesel Engines and 2 Gasturbines coupled to 4 Waterjets producing 94,000 horsepower. It is also equipped with a Submarine and a Missile Defence System! Fuel consumption at top speed is reported to be 23 tons per hour! Building costs were around $600 million.

When this Yacht was ready for delivery, Mr. Abramovich argued with the shipyard about extra works that he apparently ordered for approx. € 50 Million that he did not wanted to pay, therefore delivery was delayed for around 6 Months before this problem was sorted out.

Yas Length 141 m Built in 2011 at Abu Dhabi Mar in U.A.E. for Hamdan bin Zayed al-Nahyan. With it's very special design it was built in a 1977 Royal Dutch Navy Frigate Hull. Unusually for a Yacht of this size, the Hull is steel and the superstructure is made out of GRP.

The journey starts at the Japanese harbour of Otaru City then moves to the Sea of Okhotsk and visits Sakhalin Island, on the coast of Magadan, Kamchatka and the Kuril Islands. This extreme route is full of face-to-face encounters with wildlife and is compensated by a 5-star, all-inclusive service on board: excellent cuisine, endless selection of wines and other drinks and, of course, personal room concierge. heard and as we neared the landing beach, shapes could be seen, some small and many large – these were the mammalian inhabitants of Tyuleniy Island - seals! I could make out two species of seals, the small Northern Fur Seal, and the larger Steller's Sea lion. We were climbing up quickly to an area which overlooked part of the island. The view from here was simply breathtaking. The whole of the island was covered with a living carpet of Common Guillemots or Murres numbering tens of thousands. On a nearby roof of an abandoned hut was another incredible sight: a group of the most unlikely looking seabirds. Almost black in colour, they have bright white eyes, a lipstick-red beak and cutely curling crest on the forehead – these were Crested Auklets. Setting up my spotting scope on these fabulous little darlings, I invited the guests to come and get a close-up view of them. June 18, 2014 - Piltun Lagoon, Sakhalin Island We arrived at Piltun Lagoon at the Northern end of Sakhalin Island. When we headed towards the shore we suddenly came across a Western Grey Whale mother and her calf in the shallows! The 15 m mom and her 7 m offspring were staying rather close to our Zodiacs (inflatable boats). Several times the whales came as close as 20 meters and made our cameras click away in frenzy. June 15, 2014 - Otaru, Japan At 10:30 the Silver Discoverer cruiser, a seven-deck ship left the harbour in the city of Otaru and started sailing towards the Sea of Okhotsk. Shortly after the expedition, leader Juan Carlos Restrepo, conveyed all the main safety information. We were then able to enjoy the cruise with cocktails on the Pool Deck introducing each other by chatting to get to know our cruising partners for the next few weeks. June 16, 2014 - Korsakov, Russia In the morning the Silver Discoverer docked at the port of Korsakov on Sakhalin Island. We were all excited to take our first steps on Russian soil. It would be nice to know something about the local people. In winter, there is downhill and cross country skiing and ice fishing to be enjoyed, while in autumn hunting, berry picking and a great Russian “shashlik” barbeque are an attraction. At local markets one can buy food such as king crabs and vegetables. I could not help myself but I had to check out the old soviet cars like the Ladas and the UAZs. As the evening started, we had our Captain’s Welcome Cocktail party, where Captain Nicolay Tililyuk introduced himself and welcomed our lucky guests to this very unique and unexplored part of the world on board the Silver Discoverer. Вид открывается просто захватывающий. Весь остров покрыт живым ковром. Кроме тюленей это десятки тысяч птиц: тонкоклювые кайры, чистики и др. На соседней крыше заброшенной хижины открывается другое невероятное зрелище: группа самого неожиданного вида птиц. Почти черного цвета, они имеют ярко-белый глаз, будто напомаженный красный клюв и милый гребень на лбу - это большие конюги. Июнь 18, 2014 – Пильтунский залив Мы прибыли в район Пильтунского залива на северной оконечности острова Сахалин. На пути к берегу мы неожиданно наткнулись на мать и детеныша западных серых китов, плавающих на мелководье! 15-ти метровая самка и 7-ми метровый младенец были так близко от наших резиновых лодок “Зодиаков”. Несколько раз киты подошли к нам ближе 20 метров, и все пассажиры защелкали камерами в исступлении. Мы могли почти чувствовать запах этих великанов! На берегу нам встретились промысловики, которые готовили свои сети, в то время как другие местные жители ловили рыбу удочкой. На земле было набросано много кунджи (разновидность лосося) и какая-то обыкновенная рыбешка, кото-

Some of us were able to spot several brown bears playing in the far distance on a snowy slope. After we completed our walks and came back to the landing site, everyone was enjoying a heart-warming drink and a joyful conversation when a juvenile brown bear was sighted coming towards the landing site. All passengers immediately proceeded to the Zodiacs whilst the bear checked our camp. Thanks to a great response from the guests and an outstanding teamwork from the Expedition Team, the emergency evacuation from Cape Yapon proceeded very well and everyone made it safely back to the ship. Occasionally it would raise its head and stare towards us, sniffing the air because the wind was blowing towards us, and as bears have poor eyesight, it just ignored us. It was an 'I don't care' bear, coming right down to the water's edge and even lying on a rock looking at us with its paws crossed. Unbelievable! June 20, 2014 - Malminskiye Islands & Fedora Bay, Russia While we had Martini Tasting and a satisfying Mexican style lunch, Silver Discoverer had dropped anchor off Fedora Bay at the Siberian mainland. The plan was to have a close encounter with the taiga (boreal forest) this afternoon. Ten intrepid explorers set off with a local ranger to the summit of a nearby hilltop, unaware that they would soon be bushwhacking their way. While the going was rough, the views were spectacular and well worth the effort. But we stripped off a few layers of clothing on the way. And so we turned for home, retracing our steps back to the Russian camp from which we had started. Here we had time to sample local fish, pet the puppy and sleek Russian blue cat that had recently wandered in. It was an idyllic setting and we lingered a while before heading back on board. June 19, 2014 - At Sea and Iony Island We navigated by GPS through the fog and could hear the island long before we could actually see it. We heard rumbling, snorting and grunts from the Steller's sea lions and the incessant squawking of the kittiwakes. Finally, our Zodiac came up close to little Iony Island with its pyramid-perfect peak and razor-sharp jagged granite rocks. Every available rock face was covered wall-to-wall with the bodies of Thick-billed Murres and Steller’s sea lions. We switched off the engine and floated quietly so we could take in the smells and sounds of hundreds of massive Steller’s sea lions fighting for a position on the beach.

Everyone who has ever backpacked through Southeast Asia knows the best shopping is not at stores but at the prolific markets. There are some tips for market visitors. Never stop smiling and nodding. If you

show respect and humor, you will be rewarded with it. By nodding you are showing an attempt to place your head lower than the vendor. It means you show respect. Know your tools. Whatever the first offer is, counter-offer with a quarter or a third of that price. (With a smile of course.) Start lower than you are prepared to spend. If the vendor drops their offer by US$1 or 30 baht or whatever, then raise yours by the same amount. Keep on going in this fashion until you both can find a price that works for you. Don’t start what you are not prepared to finish. Many times just by walking by a booth and touching something, you are signifying the beginning of a bargaining party. As soon as you start, it is rude to stop. No one likes a tease. Services have their own rules. Always, always, always decide on every aspect of the price before you accept the services, unless prices are clearly posted. Know when to accept defeat. You can’t always get what you want. There is nothing that is more embarrassing than watching Westerners try and try to get a vendor to cave in over less then a dollar.

ARTEM: The Story began when the Snake Show opened in late 2010. At the same time a small corral with crocodiles was installed as an additional element of the show. However, later we had the opportunity to expand the area and the question was what to build on it. It is quite logical “to settle” crocodiles next to the snakes. Next to this is a hall with a balustrade around it, and a bridge over a huge pool about 20 metres in diameter. There will be dozens of crocodiles teeming in the water. We call this place the "feeding pool". Our guests will have the opportunity not only to observe reptiles right from the top, but also feed them with special rods. These will suspend by pieces of chicken or even the whole carcass. The word "feed" sounds harmless. But believe me, it is a really bloodcurdling sight when a huge creature leaps out of the water and bites the meat of with its toothsome jaws! Finally, the main hall consists of a round arena with bleachers and a stage in the centre. Of course, the highlight of the show is the moment when the arm or the head of the tamer is in the crocodiles jaw. No need even to explain to the reader how dangerous this trick is. At the end of the show, everybody has an opportunity to take a photo sitting on the biggest crocodile. After the show visitors can enjoy some shopping. Hundreds of products from topquality crocodile skins, snake (python), stingray, lizard, and shark as well as a lot of items made of crocodile blood and internal organs. В конце зрители получат возможность сфотографироваться на самом большом крокодиле, сидя верхом. А после представления можно будет заняться шоппингом. В просторном зале посетителю предлагаются сотни изделий из высококачественной кожи крокодила, змей (питона), ската, варана, акулы, а также препараты на основе крови крокодила и его внутренних органов. Продукция, в основном, тайского производства и некоторые товары из Индонезии, в частности змея. Должен сказать, что здесь продается исключительно натуральная кожа, никаких заменителей или искусственных вставок.

Later, on the Indonesian paradise island of Bali, in 1978, he established what is now known as the Paul Ropp franchise. Fast-forward to today, and Ropp is again intriguing the market with his newest creation: a limited edition line of fashion dubbed "Back to the Future". "My love of history has shown me that some of the greatest things I witness today have been created in the past and brought forward to be continued and admired in the present. This can be seen in architecture, art, literature and music, and fashion – colours, sizes, and styles may change, yet the concept remains both aged and timeless; simply reapplied to fit the needs of the present." Paul Ropp details his inspiration from the cyclical recycling of old ideas that will continue to remain applicable and aesthetic in the present, because they continues to maintain fundamental values. As Paul himself has said: "I thought that it would be very interesting to show the public some of the products I made years ago, and to see if that product still holds up today. The result of doing so, using social networking, has been absolutely astonishing. Many of our world-wide friends have shown interest in past styles and ideas dating back to fifteen years ago. What all of this has shown me is that all remarkable expression that was appreciated in the past, still endures in the present, and will likely do so in the future".
