PRELUDE
W E A R E N E A R I N G T H E E N D of a vibrant and hectic 2021 wedding season as I write this. It was amazing to see couples and wedding professionals work together to bring the wedding industry in Maine back to life. After a devastating year during the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 wedding season arrived fast and furious for Maine’s engaged couples and vendors alike. Everyone collectively got creative and came up with ways to gather safely in large numbers and found ways to schedule new weddings and process the thousands of postponed celebrations from 2020. It was remarkable to see things spring back to life so quickly — hats off to everyone who gathered together to make things work efficiently and safely! The record number of submissions that we received for this issue is a testament to the hard work and dedication that 2021 brought to the table. Venues saw multiple weddings each weekend (and even weekdays!) Décor was shared between clients to ease the transition between events in the same location. Plans changed, and large group gatherings moved from their original indoor plans to gorgeous outdoor locations from Maine’s mountains to its coastline. 2021 saw a fundamental shift in the Maine wedding industry, and the results were spectacular. As you look at the featured weddings and styled shoots in this issue, you can feel the excitement that we all felt as the world opened back up, and we could get back to what we do best — creating and celebrating at the beautiful weddings that we knew would eventually return. A special shout-out goes to our Wedding of the Year winners, Rachel and Adam Szymaniak. They held on as the pandemic caused the first-ever remote announcement of the contest winners, Zoom meetings instead of in-person visits, and the eventual postponement of their 2020 wedding. When we finally made it to their wedding weekend in October 2021, Rachel and Adam said, “Thank you for our fairy-tale wedding week! The 27-month engagement was worth the wait.” Don’t miss the photos from their wedding weekend from Kivalo and Molly Breton & Co. starting on page 102. 2022 is here! Let’s get out there and enjoy it. We can’t wait to see your weddings. Best,

transportation information
SCOPE OUT TRANSPORTATION options early. When you plan your Maine wedding, remember there aren’t multiple airports, bus stations, or public transportation venues for your guests to choose from.
2
LEAVE TIME for people “from away” to get lost.
10 | WWW.REALMAINEWEDDINGS.COM
If people are driving, provide SUGGESTED REST STOPS. I-95 can go on for miles without one, so be prepared.
5
If you are planning a wedding in Maine from thousands of miles away, it helps to have a local person steer you in the right direction. If you don’t have friends or family in the area, consider hiring a MAINE WEDDING PLANNER. If you’re flying in from out of state, KEEP YOUR WEDDING ATTIRE ON HAND. Pack it in your carry-on bag and have it pressed when you arrive.
BE AWARE OF TRAFFIC. Coastal Maine is a popular place in the summer, and Route 1 can come to a standstill, making travel time between the church and the reception longer than planned.
PUT SIGNS UP along the road in rural areas so your guests won’t get lost.
CONSIDER PROVIDING TRANSPORTATION. If people are coming in from out of town for your wedding, consider hiring a party bus, van, or even a trolley to take guests from their hotels to the wedding ceremony, to the reception (if it’s in a different location), and back to their hotels. It will save on parking spaces and offer your guests a safe alternative to driving.

Planning an island wedding? Remember these two words: FERRY SCHEDULE. You don’t want your guests to miss the boat.

Rural areas can lack a large number of available accommodations. Be prepared to BOOK ROOMS AND GUEST HOUSES well in advance.
If you’re getting married in the fall, book hotel rooms early. Autumn is “LEAF PEEPER” SEASON in New England, and accommodations book up fast with out-of-state tourists.

Want to send your guests home with a bit of piece of Maine? How about a sapling? The Maine state tree is the EASTERN WHITE PINE. Have your guests plant the tree and help the environment.

There are many beautiful, natural places in Maine to get married without access to a restroom. Plan accordingly to have RESTROOM TRAILERS available for your guests.

rentals & reservations
If you are renting tenting, tables, chairs, etc., doublecheck the details of your RENTAL DELIVERY, especially if you are having a rural wedding. It may be easier for your rental company to deliver your order earlier in the week, giving you more time to set things up.
FAV O R S
Give your guests MAINE-MADE FAVORS. It’s an easy way to be unique and send your guests home with a reminder of the time they spent with you.

One great way to have an authentic and greener wedding is to PURCHASE SUPPLIES LOCALLY. Incorporate Maine food, drink, and favors.
SERVE LOCAL FAVORITES like Maine microbrews, blueberries, whoopie pies, and fiddleheads. Many people can’t get these things where they live.
Lobster is a Maine tradition, but it’s messy! If you plan to serve lobster, consider serving it “LAZY LOBSTER” style — pre-cracked and ready to eat. It will keep your tables and guests tidy.

Maine summers are short! Be sure to BOOK YOUR VENDORS WELL IN ADVANCE. 12-18 months in advance is not too early.

planning from afar 21 FR

If you plan a Maine wedding from afar, try to MAKE AT LEAST ONE TRIP to your destination site and meet with all of the companies you have booked.
VISIT THE CEREMONY SITE during the same time of day and year that you have scheduled your ceremony and make notes of external or environmental noise. There’s nothing like a foghorn to ruin the moment.
Figure out what flowers are in season in Maine for your wedding. Using SEASONAL FLOWERS in your bouquet and decor will save you money and will still look beautiful.
23
If you are planning a destination wedding in Maine, a great place to start is to CONTACT A LOCAL WEDDING PLANNER in the area you’d like to be wed. They’ll know all of the helpful details to get you going! Maine is just as beautiful in the winter as it is in the summer. CONSIDER A WINTER WEDDING in the woods or on the ski slopes of one of Maine’s premiere ski resorts.

If you are planning a romantic ceremony outside on the coast, be aware that it can get quite WINDY. Make sure your hairstyle pulls your hair away from your face to keep from holding it back with your hand throughout the vows.
—Jackie Gardner, Moonset Farm Floral (Porter, ME)
Two words. MUD SEASON. If you’re getting married outside in the spring, beware. If you’re worried about bugs, put a bottle of INSECT REPELLENT on each table at the reception and make use of citronella candles when decorating.
If your ceremony is in a church without a cooling system or outside in a hot area, have PAPER FANS for your guests to cool themselves.
14 | WWW.REALMAINEWEDDINGS.COM
42 BLACK FLY season runs from mid-May to early July; MOSQUITOS can be an issue, too. Try not to schedule your ceremony during the buggiest times of day — like dusk — if you are having an outdoor wedding.
Summer evenings can be chilly in Maine. Plan on renting PATIO HEATERS if people are going to be outside in the dark, especially on the coast, where it can be windy.
BRING AN UMBRELLA. If it’s not going to rain, you can use it as shade.
On the coast it can get especially chilly at night in summer. Remind guests to PACK A SWEATER.

GUY STYLE BRINGING YOUR PERSONAL STYLE INTO YOUR WEDDING ATTIRE
C
ustomizing your wedding wardrobe can be a subtle way of bringing your own
personal style into a traditional tuxedo type of affair. Here are a few ways to add some highlight notes to your wedding attire.
SHOES Shoes make the man! Get creative with your footwear. Whether you choose matching high tops, bespoke dress shoes or velvet smoking slippers, your shoes can be a signature highlight of your wedding wardrobe.
JEWELRY Jewelry isn’t just for the bride anymore! Get creative and think about cufflinks, tie bars, bracelets, necklaces, and even earrings. Jewelry is a great way to personalize your wedding attire with a bit of bling. Get creative and give jewelry to your groomsmen that they will wear at the wedding and use afterwards.
COLORS A subtle nod to your wedding colors in your boutonniere, tie or pocket square, or even your suit itself can add a bit of flair to you and your groomsmen. 80 | WWW.REALMAINEWEDDINGS.COM

caron&co photography is Russ and Liz Caron, an award-winning, full-time, husband and wife wedding photography team. They photograph awesome weddings throughout Maine, New England, and beyond. Admittedly, they love Maine weddings the very best, with the seacoast, lakes, camps, and mountains each having their own special beauty and charm. They live in Brunswick with their mini–Australian Labradoodle Daisy and their orange cat Charlie.
LAD Photography, p. 90
Lauren DelVecchio is a Certified Professional Photographer and has her Master of Photography and Craftsman degrees. She has won the Maine Wedding Photographer of the Year Award, the Photographer of the Year Award for Maine and New England, and has earned several national and international awards for her work. “My clients tend to be happy, laid-back couples who know how to have fun. They love that they can trust me to make their day stress-free and photograph them in a way that is unique and creative.”
Molly Breton & Co., p. 102
Molly Breton is a southern girl at heart, a wife and mother of two beautiful boys. She grew up in Virginia and yes, she still has an accent. Her husband, Benn was originally from Maine and he always wanted to move back. Fast forward a few years and here they are living in the most beautiful place ever, managing an outdoor ice skating rink in Portland during the winter months.
Revolution Summer Photography, p. 96
Corey Butler, a member of the Wedding Photojournalists of America, is a documentary-style wedding photographer. He prides himself on a hands-off low-key reportage approach that allows couples to see their true selves in their photos, and details of their day unstaged and unmanipulated as they actually happened. A Maine native, Corey lives with his wife, son, and dog on Unity Pond.
Kivalo Photography, p. 102

Now she considers herself extremely lucky to spend her weekends with amazing people in beautiful places documenting moments. Grey Havens Inn overlooks the beautiful coastline of Maine, and for the wedding, the couple was able to rely on the former owner of the venue to help as they planned from New York. Both ceremony and reception were on the cliff overlooking the water, with the islands nearby adding to the feeling of a cozy harbor. The Grey Havens Inn was built in 1904 and boasts of the opportunity to experience Maine “the way it used to be.” Often referred to as the “castle by the sea” with its two turrets facing east, guests visiting the inn are treated to awe-inspiring sunrises from the porch. Ming and Chris. When speaking of their wedding, the two rave about their experience working with the inn for their special day. With the early start time for the ceremony, the couple had a lunchtime reception for the guests at the inn. As the reception wound down, the couple had arranged for a 70-foot sailboat to sail slowly into the hotel’s deep harbor to escort the guests on a cruise of the harbor in two groups to extend the happy occasion. After the second tour of the local coastline, the sailboat pulled up at a working lobster dock. There, the couple treated their guests to a sampling of authentic Maine fare with seafood as fresh as it from

The venue has two houses right on site that we could book for the whole wedding party for the full weekend — so we got to fully occupy the venue from Friday to Sunday instead of just a couple of hours. priority was to find a gorgeous, flexible venue, then to find a kickin’ band, then to finagle an open bar, and the rest would fall into place,” Margo remembers. “Most of our decorations were bought online, but our coordinator helped us put everything together so tastefully, you would have never known we were able to keep the decor on a tighter budget. It helped to have a venue that was so beautiful on its own!” In addition to the overall feel, it was essential to Margo and Scott to include a few unique touches to the day that would add to the magic. “After our ceremony, we had our guests wave streamers which provided for easy clean up after the ceremony and for some fun color while we walked back up the aisle.” Instead of a traditional sit-down dinner, they chose to go with food trucks. “For dinner, we had food trucks which gave our guests more options for what they would like to eat. That gave us a lot of flexibility for adding or subtracting last-minute guests, as we could pay for what we use. Additionally, we ate “cafeteria-style” at long tables with benches and no seating chart, which allowed our guests to squeeze in or spread out as they desired. This informal arrangement saved us lots of time having to put together a seating chart and figuring out who would want to sit with who.” After dinner, they chose to bring in a twist on a classic summertime favorite.

IN MARGO’S WORDS I’m so glad... that we decided to do a “first look” instead of waiting to see each other during the ceremony. Getting all my nerves out of the way privately with just my partner made the ceremony more relaxing and fun! One of my favorite moments was... when my ring bearer’s boutonniere flew off his lapel just as he started to walk down the aisle in front of me. As soon as that little mishap happened I started to laugh, and it immediately calmed my nerves and I started to enjoy myself. I didn’t realize... how much of an impact our photographer would have on our whole wedding experience, and I’m so happy we went with Corey! The

photos we have are special to us because they capture the day exactly how we remember it. I wish... I had gotten a s’more from The Marshmallow Cart. People always say to slow down on your wedding day to enjoy all of it, and that couldn’t be more true! I really liked... the flexibility we had throughout the whole process. There are so many things that can come up last minute, and having flexible plans kept me calm and collected throughout the planning process through the wedding day! My advice to other couples is... to worry less about tradition and focus on what you’d like out of your wedding. Our imperfect wedding was perfect to me!

This made the process less stressful and kept things more sanitary with the current situation. She even made adorable nautical masks for my bridesmaids and a sophisticated mask with pearls for me. Those little touches were so appreciated and made the day run smooth. The Henry’s had a huge selection of gorgeous wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses. Molly figured out my style quickly after just a few dress changes. She started pulling dress after dress like she was reading my mind. Patty Takacs from Kivalo Photography joined the group to document the trip. “We marked the days on our calendar leading up to the next planning day because we could not wait to see our venue! The day finally arrived, and we had beautiful weather. We pulled up to Sebasco Harbor Resort and took our time admiring the gorgeous landscaping and sweeping water views. We looked at each other with huge smiles, because we knew this was a very special place. Fausto, our wedding planner from Blue Elephant Events and Catering, was waiting inside for us to begin a fun day filled with food tastings, flowers, and tours. It was our first time meeting him in person, but you wouldn’t know it. We all instantly clicked, even with masks covering our faces. “Flower arrangements with Ashley Dyer from Farmhouse Florals by Estabrook’s were first on the agenda. I grew up in a house exploding with plant life and developed a great love for flowers, so I was excited when I saw pictures of Ashley’s incredible work! Ashley took the time to comb through our Pinterest and make a few storyboards tailored to our style. We both instantly fell in love with her ideas, which were Pinterestworthy themselves! We couldn’t wait to see her creations come to life on our big day. Her ideas for the church sound like a fairy tale, and we cannot wait to see how Patty and Molly capture it all on camera.” Of course, everything was carefully documented by one of the photographers assigned to the wedding. “Patty from Kivalo Photography joined us took some cute photos around the resort and soaked in the beautiful day. Our favorite moment was checking out the vintage bowling alley on the resort and having Patty snap some photos. Our first date was bowling, so we planned to incorporate the resort’s vintage candlepin bowling alley into our 108 | WWW.REALMAINEWEDDINGS.COM

special weekend. An extra perk of having Patty there was all the candid
reception. This day was documented by Molly from Molly Breton & Co., who even took photos of Rachel and Adam in the former church crypt at Agora Grand. “We met the Real Maine Weddings team at the end of April for our third official planning day. Spring was here, and the long quarantine of winter was finally over! It felt so good to stretch our legs and resume wedding planning. We began the day with a bang by discussing our honeymoon to Saint Lucia! We could not think of a better way to start the day. Marigot Bay Resort generously gave us a week-long honeymoon! “We enjoyed coffee and sunshine outside a café with the Real Maine Weddings team. That’s where they introduced us to Maria from Steward and Porter Travel by Dream Vacations. Maria is an expert travel agent who kindly donated her time and talent to give us an unforgettable honeymoon. We felt a little nervous about travel due to our inexperience and the ever-changing pandemic rules. However, we felt a connection with Maria and were instantly put at ease. She walked us through every little detail like flights, food, adventure, and safety. She gave us some great insider tips and recommendations as well.” From there, the team traveled to Lewiston, to the renovated church that is now Agora Grand Event Center. Rachel remembers her experience of seeing the venue for the first time. “Our jaws dropped upon entering the historic neo-Gothic style church with 55foot ceilings and shimmering stained glass windows. The place is a masterpiece. The owner, Billie, warmly welcomed us with a full tour. After that, we got to business planning the welcome party with Billie and Fausto. We decided on a simple and elegant aesthetic to let the stunning architecture shine. From there, we just needed to find welcome party

It would have taken us forever to create something half as nice without their guidance. We were excited to have the public vote on their favorite!” The last stop of the day was one that Rachel and Adam had been looking forward to for a long time: wedding rings and jewelry at Day’s Jewelers in South Portland. “We started the day with honeymoon planning, so we had to end it with an even bigger bang… WEDDING BANDS! We felt like kids in a really nice candy store, but with champagne and diamonds. Kristin Kennedy of Day’s Jewelers took great care of us. She was incredibly patient and narrowed down our personal style right away. We were able to find several wedding bands each for public voting, and we cannot wait to see the winners. We also picked out some stunning crystal jewelry — and something blue — to wear for the wedding. Overall, it was a truly wonderful day that even felt a little magical.” As Rachel and Adam found themselves nearing the end of the planning process, they found time to take advantage of a couple of other fun activities included in the Wedding of the Year package. A trip to the Regency Spa in Portland was the perfect way to relax, unwind, and get into the wedding mood. They followed this with a fun session at Board and Brush in Portland, where they created some beautiful DIY wooden signs,

including one that would feature promi-

The final planning day scheduled with the team was a trip to Saco. “Our next planning day couldn’t come fast enough, so we were happy to hit the road for Maine again a few weeks later. We giddily talked about our wedding and played our wedding playlist on the ride up from Boston. All those little touches made us feel special and made an already great day even better! We arrived at the Blue Elephant office to a lovely welcome sign. Fausto is known to gift his clients a little blue elephant keepsake, and we were excited to be given one that day. Our little blue elephant sits lovingly on our desk at home and serves as a reminder for wonderful days ahead.” Next was a meeting that Rachel and Adam had been looking forward to for a long time. It was finally time to talk about the wedding cake! “We were so excited when we heard a knock at the door because that meant wedding cake time. We both love dessert! Owen Dyer, the owner of Confection Art, arrived with a huge variety of gluten-free and regular cakes for us to taste. We are so appreciative that he can bake a really good glutenfree cake and that he brought us several flavors in gluten-free for tasting. We wanted to offer both gluten-free and regular cakes at our wedding. Owen offers so many mouthwatering flavors, and the combinations are practically endless! We loved that Owen’s recipes are beloved old family recipes that he has perfected. You can just feel the love and enthusiasm when eating Owen’s cake. We felt so energized by Owen’s passion and couldn’t wait to see how our wedding cake turned out!” Lastly, Rachel and Adam met up with Jason Strycharz from The Music Man DJ Service and Maine to Boston Photo Booth to discuss the music and special dances for the reception and the photo booth experience for the guests. Rachel and Adam’s Welcome Party at the Agora Grand was the perfect way to kick off the Wedding of the Year weekend.
2021 due to the pandemic, Rachel, Adam, and the Real Maine Weddings team found themselves finally at go time in October of 2021. The weekend started at the Agora Grand in Lewiston for the welcome party. Rachel and Adam gathered for drinks and snacks with their friends and family in the dramatically restored church. It felt good to be back together again, and the anticipation for the weekend ahead was palpable. Everyone enjoyed the food and drinks provided by the venue, and we all made it an early night to prepare for the next day. After months of waiting patiently, it was finally time for the rehearsal dinner! In the afternoon, Rachel and Adam greeted their guests at the Maine Maritime Museum for a
