HOW EXCITING!

You are recently engaged and starting to plan your wedding. There are so many moving parts and possibilities. Where do you start? Here are some tips and suggestions to help you get started. Remember: there are no hard and fast rules to wedding planning anymore. Sit down with your partner and determine what the essential pieces are to you. Everything else will fall into place.

BUDGETING 101

Every wedding is different, and you’ll discover what is essen-

Did you know?

Whether you are a native “Mainah” or planning a destination wedding, thank you for choosing to have your wedding here and helping keep Maine moving in this significant way! Weddings in Maine represent

$1,000,000 in annual revenue. Everything you spend on venue rentals, catering, hair & makeup, transportation, equipment rentals, photography, videography, etc., supports a small local business. Every dollar goes back into the local economy, and we love you for that.

CURVING YOUR CEREMONY CHAIRS

semi-circle creates a more intimate ceremony and helps all your guests see you. When the chairs are curved ever so slightly around the ceremony spot:

& VENUE

It creates a cozier experience for your guests. Your guests will hear everything better as the sound bounces off the curved rows of chairs. The guests at the ends of each row will be able to see better, and no one feels left out. You’ll be able to see your guests better. It looks beautiful and elegant in photos. And, best of all, the rounded edges of rows make it feel like you’re getting a big hug during the ceremony!

Three things to consider when hiring your wedding planner/coordinator:

1. PERSONALITY. Meet in person or Zoom with them and get to know them. Do you jive with that person and feel comfortable? 2. TRUST. After meeting, do you feel confident they will have your back and make the best decisions for your big day?

3. REVIEWS/REFERENCES. Check out their social media and wedding websites for reviews from past clients!

— Renee Strange-Farnham, Strange Events

It is customary to feed the professionals you have hired for your wedding celebration. This team varies but often includes your event planner , photographer, band or DJ, and officiant . Talk to your caterer about the best way to feed the team efficiently — timing is everything! Your caterer can also walk you through the best options for vendor meals. Sometimes the team eats the same meal that the guests are having. Sometimes a separate buffet area is set up for the team members to eat on their schedule. Figure out what works best for your particular situation.

HONEYMOON ESSENTIALS

You are thinking ahead and planning your honeymoon. Good idea! Where to start? A travel agent: 1) saves you time by doing the research for you, 2) has access to exclusive promotions, 3) is your advocate if anything goes wrong on the trip.

PHOTOGRAPHY:

Getting Started!

You might think you should be able to compare photographers the way you’d compare plumbers — who can do the job at the price you want to pay and guarantee it will turn out the way you want. Considerations such as personality, products, artistic styles, how working with us will make you feel on your wedding day, and how you’ll feel with the finished product afterward should be on your radar.

HELPING THOSE IN NEED THROUGH YOUR WEDDING

A new national program has just launched that offers meals directly from your wedding to hungry people in your area! Ask your caterer if they have heard about the You Can Have Mine Initiative. This program lets individual members of the vendor team choose to waive their meals at your wedding and donate the dollar amount to a local shelter or food bank, where it will go straight to feeding hungry kids and adults in your area. Every bite counts when you are food insecure.

We all have different pricing structures, shooting styles, and ways of interacting with our clients. Some photographers charge a low base price and let you add options to customize your finished package. Others have an all-inclusive price, which may or may not include prints, files, albums, or other products.  Some won’t share pricing until they meet with you, and some photographers write custom quotes for each wedding. Your wedding will be different from any other we’ll see this year, so please forgive us if we spend a little more time trying to understand how we can help you before just quoting you a price. You’re not a leaky faucet to us, and you probably want more than just a washer replaced!

making sense of tippingvendorsyour

STORY BY ABIGAIL WORTHING

OF THE MANY RESOURCES that lead couples to Maine when choosing their wedding destination, the diverse and talented vendor community is among the most attractive. From boutique florists, planners featuring bespoke elements tailored to your tastes, and caterers working with the freshest ingredients available, you don’t need to look far to find a wealth of incredible vendors willing to go above and beyond to make your wedding dreams a reality, at times reaching beyond what you had imagined. With a wedding community that continues to grow and nurtures some of the best, you will be stunned not only on the day of but throughout the entire process.

So how do you thank the people who ensure every box on your list gets checked, every guest leaves with a smile, and you have the day you always dreamed of? Finding the right way to say thank you can be difficult, and it can be hard to know when, if, or how much to tip for these vendors who see you through the months of planning. While not every vendor expects to get a tip, there are a few tried and true guidelines to help you navigate why and how to tip your vendor’s best.

WHY SHOULD YOU PLAN TO TIP YOUR VENDORS?

You’ll be fortunate to work with some of the best small businesses in Maine. Maine isn’t a state known for large chains or “man-behindthe-curtain” companies. Most of the time, you’re planning with the proprietor. Wedding professionals in Maine are artisans and specialists whose faces you will come to know and whose words will come to assure you during your planning process. They are small business owners employing locals and using Maine ingredients to give you the curated experience you came for. In most larger cities, your wedding may be one of hundreds or more in a

Expected Vendors

BANDS: $25/$50 per band member

DJ: $50/$150 or 15% of the total bill

DELIVERY DRIVERS/SET UP CREW:

$5–$20 per person, based on the level of work required and the service received

HAIR/MAKEUP ARTISTS: 15–25% of the total

RECEPTION CATERING STAFF: 18–20% of the final bill, usually included in the final total, but read the contract to make sure

BAR STAFF: 18–20% of the final bill

year, but for many Maine vendors, yours will be an event they know inside and out.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHICH VENDORS TO TIP?

First, it’s always best to start by reviewing your contract. Some vendors, like caterers or venues with bar staff, will have gratuity as a line item in the contract. Read everything over, and don’t be afraid to ask if you have questions. Make sure to clarify, especially if you’re unsure what the cost or line item may mean. For example, a “service charge” often does not mean “gratuity” and may go back to the company directly or to another service you are receiving. When gratuity is not included, prepare the gratuity ahead of time. In situations where there is staff that should be tipped — referenced in our guide below — confer with your coordinator or event lead on how to dispense the gratuity best.

WHEN SHOULD YOU TIP?

Rather than you or your partner trying to track down all your vendors on your wedding day, entrust your planner or a loved one — think parent, friend, or member of the bridal party — to distribute tips on your behalf. Write cards in advance and have them sorted and in envelopes so they are easy to hand out on your big day. Anyone you miss, drop a card in the mail after the fact! For truly stellar service, follow up after the event by leaving a great review and sharing photos of your wedding with the professionals that helped make your day run smoothly.

WHOM SHOULD YOU TIP? AND HOW MUCH?

When tipping your vendors, remember that there are vendors for whom gratuity is expected and others for whom it is optional but always appreciated. See the examples below for guidelines.

Optional (but appreciated!)

OFFICIANT: $50–$100. If hosting a religious ceremony, donate to the religious organization instead.

If you are planning a wedding in Maine from thousands of miles away, it helps to have a local person steer you in the right direction. If you don’t have friends or family in the area, consider hiring a MAINE WEDDING PLANNER .

If you’re flying in from out of state, KEEP YOUR WEDDING ATTIRE ON HAND. Pack it in your carry-on bag and have it pressed when you arrive.

SCOPE OUT TRANSPORTATION options early. When you plan your Maine wedding, remember there aren’t multiple airports, bus stations, or public transportation venues for your guests to choose from.

2 LEAVE TIME for people “from away” to get lost.

If people are driving, provide SUGGESTED REST STOPS. I-95 can go on for miles without one, so be prepared.

PUT SIGNS UP along the road in rural areas so your guests won’t get lost.

BE AWARE OF TRAFFIC.

Coastal Maine is a popular place in the summer, and Route 1 can come to a standstill, making travel time between the church and the reception longer than planned.

CONSIDER PROVIDING TRANSPORTATION. If people are coming in from out of town for your wedding, consider hiring a party bus, van, or even a trolley to take guests from their hotels to the wedding ceremony, to the reception (if it’s in a different location), and back to their hotels. It will save on parking spaces and offer your guests a safe alternative to driving.

& reservations

If you are renting tenting, tables, chairs, etc., doublecheck the details of your RENTAL DELIVERY, especially if you are having a rural wedding. It may be easier for your rental company to deliver your order earlier in the week, giving you more time to set things up.

10

There are many beautiful, natural places in Maine to get married without access to a restroom. Plan accordingly to have RESTROOM TRAILERS available for your guests.

11

Rural areas can lack a large number of available accommodations. Be prepared to BOOK ROOMS AND GUEST HOUSES well in advance.

Planning an island wedding?

Remember these two words: FERRY SCHEDULE. You don’t want your guests to miss the boat.

Give your guests MAINE-MADE FAVORS

It’s an easy way to be unique and send your guests home with a reminder of the time they spent with you.

Want to send your guests home with a small piece of Maine? How about a sapling? The Maine state tree is the EASTERN WHITE PINE. Have your guests plant the tree and help the environment.

If you’re getting married in the fall, book hotel rooms early. Autumn is “LEAF PEEPER” SEASON in New England, and accommodations book up fast with out-of-state tourists.

SERVE LOCAL FAVORITES like Maine microbrews, blueberries, whoopie pies, and fiddleheads. Many people can’t get these things where they live.

Lobster is a Maine tradition, but it’s messy! If you plan to serve lobster, consider serving it “LAZY LOBSTER” style — pre-cracked and ready to eat. It will keep your tables and guests tidy.

Maine summers are short! Be sure to BOOK YOUR VENDORS WELL IN ADVANCE. 12-18 months in advance is not too early.

21

If you plan a Maine wedding from afar, try to MAKE AT LEAST ONE TRIP to your destination site and meet with all of the companies you have booked.

VISIT THE CEREMONY SITE during the same time of day and year that you have scheduled your ceremony and make notes of external or environmental noise. There’s nothing like a foghorn to ruin the moment.

16 One great way to have an authentic and greener wedding is to PURCHASE SUPPLIES LOCALLY Incorporate Maine food, drink, and favors.

Figure out what flowers are in season in Maine for your wedding. Using SEASONAL FLOWERS in your bouquet and decor will save you money and will still look beautiful.

If you are planning a destination wedding in Maine, a great place to start is to CONTACT A LOCAL WEDDING PLANNER in the area you’d like to be wed. They’ll know all of the helpful details to get you going!

Maine is just as beautiful in the winter as it is in the summer. CONSIDER A WINTER WEDDING in the woods or on the ski slopes of one of Maine’s premiere ski resorts.

Have a PHOTO BOOTH at your wedding. It’s still fun, and people love it. There are many great photo booth rental companies that offer a variety of options.

Planning a backyard wedding? Call the local town hall to see if there is any CONSTRUCTION PLANNED for the area around the time of your wedding. Summer in Maine is also road construction season.

It’s also a good idea when planning a backyard wedding to LET THE NEIGHBORS KNOW what time it’ll take place, so they’ll be sure to cease mowing their lawns during the ceremony.

BRING A PAIR OF SHOES to wear during the scenic photoshoot on the rocky coast of Maine. The last thing you need on your wedding day is a sprained ankle.

Since going barefoot on the beach is a norm, offer your guests PRE-MOISTENED TOWELETTES so that they can wash their feet before putting their shoes back on.

Planning a beach wedding?

NIX THE IDEA OF A LONG TRAIN on your wedding dress. Delicate fabric doesn’t mix well with sand and seaweed. If you are going to take beach photos, make sure your BUSTLE keeps your dress from dragging in the sand.

Beach weddings have a casual feel, so why not SAY “NO” TO STILETTOS and wingtips and choose flip-flops?

OUTTHIS W EATHER? weather in maine

34

The weather can change quickly in Maine. If you plan on having an OUTDOOR WEDDING, have an inside space ready as a backup.

Wear

SUNSCREEN and bring SUNGLASSES. Many weddings are outside, and you don’t want photos of you to show you sunburned and squinting.

Planning an outdoor wedding? Rent a SOUND SYSTEM. You want your guests to be able to hear your heartfelt vows.

If you’re worried about bugs, put a bottle of INSECT REPELLENT on each table at the reception and make use of citronella candles when decorating.

If your ceremony is in a church without a cooling system or outside in a hot area, have PAPER FANS for your guests to cool themselves.

Two words. MUD SEASON. If you’re getting married outside in the spring, beware.

42 Summer evenings can be chilly in Maine. Plan on renting PATIO HEATERS if people are going to be outside in the dark, especially on the coast, where it can be windy.

On the coast it can get especially chilly at night in summer. Remind guests to PACK A SWEATER.

BLACK FLY season runs from mid-May to early July. MOSQUITOS can be an issue, too. Try not to schedule your ceremony during the buggiest times of day — like dusk — if you are having an outdoor wedding.

BRING AN UMBRELLA

If it’s not going to rain, you can use it as shade.

licenses & permits

BOTH PEOPLE GETTING MARRIED must visit the town office in person to apply for a marriage license. If either of you were married before, bring a copy of your divorce decree. You do not need to apply in the town where the wedding is planned. Different rules apply depending on where you are from, so check out maine. gov for information.

A Maine marriage license is valid for 90 DAYS

Licensed to Wed

GETTING MARRIED IN MAINE? YOU NEED A LICENSE IN ORDER TO MAKE IT LEGAL. HERE’S HOW.

If you are getting married at a PUBLIC PLACE, such as a park or a beach, check to see if you need permits, especially for alcohol.

Getting married in the OFF-SEASON (aka winter) may save you money on the reception site and the vendors you choose.

W E KNOW WH AT WE’RE TA L K I N

There are only so many Saturdays in the summer! Consider having a wedding on ANOTHER DAY OF THE WEEK, like a Friday or Sunday — especially if the venue you want to use is already booked.

It is an urban myth that throwing rice at weddings is harmful to birds, but it does make a very real mess. Think about another FESTIVE KIND OF SEND-OFF: blow bubbles, play musical instruments, throw birdseed, or light sparklers.

FILE MARRIAGE INTENTIONS: The first step in obtaining a marriage license is to record the marriage intentions in writing. Both of you must sign the intentions stating you are free to marry.

WHERE TO FILE: If you are both Maine residents, file your intentions at the municipal office in the town or city where at least one of you resides.

If only one of you resides in Maine, then both of you must file your intentions at the municipal office in the town or city where you hold residency.

If neither of you is a resident of Maine, you can file intentions at any municipal office in Maine.

If either of you happen to be divorced, remember to bring a copy of your divorce decree. If you don’t have one, this can be obtained from the district court where the decree was issued. This needs to be an original document issued by the court with an embossed seal, not a photocopy. Present this to the clerk when you apply for your license and you will be good to go!

Once your intentions are filed and the license is issued, you are free to marry anywhere within the state.

TUOBA sage advice

ISSUING LICENSE: There is no waiting period in the state of Maine. Once your intentions to marry are filed, the license may be issued immediately with your signatures. The license must be used within 90 days (not three months) from the date the intentions were filed and can only be used in the state of Maine.

AFTER CEREMONY: The person who performed the ceremony is responsible for completing the appropriate section of your marriage license. This includes obtaining the signatures of two witnesses (traditionally your maid of honor and best man) plus the signature of the officiant.

FILLING OUT & FILING: The marriage license must be completed in black ink only. The officiant is responsible for filing the license with the municipal clerk at the municipality where the license was issued. They have seven days from when the ceremony took place to file. Once it’s filed, you’re officially married.

Infinite Possibilities ONE ENGAGEMENT RING,

YOUR LOVE STORY IS WHOLLY UNIQUE, AS IS YOUR EXQUISITE ENGAGEMENT RING. SELECTING A WEDDING BAND IS A WAY TO TAKE AUTHORSHIP OF THIS NEXT CHAPTER — AND YOUR PERSONAL STYLE. BUT HAVE YOU CONSIDERED JUST HOW INCREDIBLY VARIED THIS CHOICE MIGHT BE? YOUR ENGAGEMENT RING CAN BE STYLED IN A DRAMATICALLY DIFFERENT WAY, JUST BY YOUR CHOICE OF WEDDING BAND. LET’S BAND TOGETHER AND EXPLORE THE OPTIONS.

PHOTOS: COURTESY OF DAY’S JEWELERS

DIAMOND ROPE BAND

Two roped bands of 14kt yellow gold wrap tightly around a dazzling row of colorless diamonds — an interplay of contrasting textures creating a bold and alluring look. These varied elements update a classic choice of a thicker wedding band while still showcasing your spectacular engagement ring.

14kt Yellow Gold, 1/2CTW

ALTERNATING MARQUISE-SHAPED BAND

At first glance, this is your classic, sparkling choice. But look closer to see something far more subtle and dynamic at play. This band features alternating round stones with traditional prong settings, paired with faux marquise’ elongated curves featuring two brilliant round diamonds nestled within the shape, a graceful interplay of motifs for a soft and romantic choice.

14kt Yellow Gold, 3/8CTW

CURVED DOUBLE DIAMOND

BAND

Like you and your beloved, this unique band features two distinct, disparate styles made even better together. Two rows of prong-set colorless diamonds gently hug one another in curved lines, a shape that dances around and with your ring in tender, whimsical harmony.

14kt Yellow Gold, 3/8CTW

MARQUISE WRAP BAND

A spectacular next step forward in your life’s journey deserves a spectacular ring. This exquisitely curved wedding band positively luxuriates as its shape wraps sumptuously around your engagement ring. This band features five marquise diamonds and four round brilliants, which adds a fanciful and decorative flourish to your dream set.

14kt Yellow Gold, 1/2CTW

TRADITIONAL DIAMOND PAVÉ BAND

Add the perfect sparkling band to your stack with this lux and glamorous traditional diamond pavé band. Uniform, delicate round diamonds banded perfectly together add dimensionality without overwhelming to augment and showcase your gorgeous engagement ring.
