AS I WRITE THIS letter for each issue of Real Maine Weddings, I take the time to think back over the last six months of the Maine wedding season. Each time, I am reminded of the talent and creativity represented in the diverse group of professionals, both in the images submitted and in the people I work with in my own business. I continue to be humbled to work with such talented and passionate professionals. I recently appeared with a group of Maine wedding professionals on a local tv news segment about the Maine wedding industry and its recovery from the pandemic. When it aired, it struck me how I continue to be grateful to work alongside the owners of the businesses represented. The Maine wedding industry is full of genuinely remarkable people dedicated to helping create memorable wedding days for their clients.
You will notice in this issue that we have kept the format from the last and arranged things according to Maine’s many diverse geographical regions: Aroostook, Maine Highlands, DownEast & Acadia, Kennebec Valley, MidCoast, Lakes and Mountains, Portland, and Maine Beaches. There are so many great opportunities available to engaged couples looking to get married in these regions of the great state of Maine! I love that we have started framing the submissions we receive this way, and I hope that you enjoy looking at things with these regions in mind.
It is exciting for all of us to be at the beginning of the 2023 wedding season! Keep an eye out for our newly revamped website, designed to be used specifically as a resource for engaged couples and anyone looking for assistance as they start the planning process. As always, let us know if there is anything we can do to assist you in your planning. We would love to help you in any way that we can!
Sincerely,

HOW EXCITING!
You are recently engaged and starting to plan your wedding. There are so many moving parts and possibilities. Where do you start? Here are some tips and suggestions to help you get started. Remember: there are no hard and fast rules to wedding planning anymore. Sit down with your partner and determine what the essential pieces are to you. Everything else will fall into place.

Did you know?
Whether you are a native “Mainah” or planning a destination wedding, thank you for choosing to have your wedding here and helping keep Maine moving in this significant way! Weddings in Maine represent $1,000,000
in annual revenue. Everything you spend on venue rentals, catering, hair & makeup, transportation, equipment rentals, photography, videography, etc., supports a small local business. Every dollar goes back into the local economy, and we love you for that.

The guests at the ends of each row will be able to see better, and no one feels left out. You’ll be able to see your guests better. It looks beautiful and elegant in photos. And, best of all, the rounded edges of rows make it feel like you’re getting a big hug during the ceremony!
Three things to consider when hiring your wedding planner/coordinator:
1. PERSONALITY. Meet in person or Zoom with them and get to know them. Do you jive with that person and feel comfortable?
2. TRUST. After meeting, do you feel confident they will have your back and make the best decisions for your big day?
3. REVIEWS/REFERENCES. Check out their social media and wedding websites for reviews from past clients!

It is customary to feed the professionals you have hired for your wedding celebration. This team varies but often includes your event planner , photographer, band or DJ, and officiant . Talk to your caterer about the best way to feed the team efficiently — timing is everything! Your caterer can also walk you through the best options for vendor meals. Sometimes the team eats the same meal that the guests are having. Sometimes a separate buffet area is set up for the team members to eat on their schedule. Figure out what works best for your particular situation.
HONEYMOON ESSENTIALS
You are thinking ahead and planning your honeymoon. Good idea! Where to start? A travel agent: 1) saves you time by doing the research for you, 2) has access to exclusive promotions, 3) is your advocate if anything goes wrong on the trip.
— Maria Northcott, Steward and Porter Travel by Dream Vacations
PHOTOGRAPHY: Getting Started!
You might think you should be able to compare photographers the way you’d compare plumbers — who can do the job at the price you want to pay and guarantee it will turn out the way you want. Considerations such as personality, products, artistic styles, how working with us will make you feel on your wedding day, and how you’ll feel with the finished product afterward should be on your radar.
HELPING THOSE IN NEED THROUGH
YOUR WEDDING
A new national program has just launched that offers meals directly from your wedding to hungry people in your area! Ask your caterer if they have heard about the You Can Have Mine Initiative. This program lets individual members of the vendor team choose to waive their meals at your wedding and donate the dollar amount to a local shelter or food bank, where it will go straight to feeding hungry kids and adults in your area. Every bite counts when you are food insecure.
—Fausto Pifferrer, Blue Elephant Events and Catering
We all have different pricing structures, shooting styles, and ways of interacting with our clients. Some photographers charge a low base price and let you add options to customize your finished package. Others have an all-inclusive price, which may or may not include prints, files, albums, or other products. Some won’t share pricing until they meet with you, and some photographers write custom quotes for each wedding. Your wedding will be different from any other we’ll see this year, so please forgive us if we spend a little more time trying to understand how we can help you before just quoting you a price. You’re not a leaky faucet to us, and you probably want more than just a washer replaced!

If you are planning a wedding in Maine from thousands of miles away, it helps to have a local person steer you in the right direction. If you don’t have friends or family in the area, consider hiring a MAINE WEDDING PLANNER .

transportation information
SCOPE OUT TRANSPORTATION options early. When you plan your Maine wedding, remember there aren’t multiple airports, bus stations, or public transportation venues for your guests to choose from.
2LEAVE TIME for people “from away” to get lost.
If people are driving, provide SUGGESTED REST STOPS. I-95 can go on for miles without one, so be prepared.
5If you’re flying in from out of state, KEEP YOUR WEDDING ATTIRE ON HAND. Pack it in your carry-on bag and have it pressed when you arrive.
PUT SIGNS UP along the road in rural areas so your guests won’t get lost.
BE AWARE OF TRAFFIC.
Coastal Maine is a popular place in the summer, and Route 1 can come to a standstill, making travel time between the church and the reception longer than planned.
CONSIDER PROVIDING TRANSPORTATION. If people are coming in from out of town for your wedding, consider hiring a party bus, van, or even a trolley to take guests from their hotels to the wedding ceremony, to the reception (if it’s in a different location), and back to their hotels. It will save on parking spaces and offer your guests a safe alternative to driving.

STUFF rentals & reservations
If you are renting tenting, tables, chairs, etc., doublecheck the details of your
RENTAL DELIVERY, especially if you are having a rural wedding. It may be easier for your rental company to deliver your order earlier in the week, giving you more time to set things up.
10There are many beautiful, natural places in Maine to get married without access to a restroom. Plan accordingly to have RESTROOM TRAILERS available for your guests.
Planning an island wedding? Remember these two words: FERRY SCHEDULE. You don’t want your guests to miss the boat.
11Rural areas can lack a large number of available accommodations. Be prepared to BOOK ROOMS AND GUEST HOUSES well in advance. FO R THOSE FRO M A
YAW planning from afar
If you’re getting married in the fall, book hotel rooms early. Autumn is “LEAF PEEPER” SEASON in New England, and accommodations book up fast with out-of-state tourists.
Give your guests MAINE-MADE FAVORS
It’s an easy way to be unique and send your guests home with a reminder of the time they spent with you.
Want to send your guests home with a bit of piece of Maine? How about a sapling? The Maine state tree is the EASTERN WHITE PINE. Have your guests plant the tree and help the environment.
SERVE LOCAL FAVORITES like Maine microbrews, blueberries, whoopie pies, and fiddleheads. Many people can’t get these things where they live.
16
One great way to have an authentic and greener wedding is to PURCHASE SUPPLIES LOCALLY Incorporate Maine food, drink, and favors.
Lobster is a Maine tradition, but it’s messy! If you plan to serve lobster, consider serving it “LAZY LOBSTER” style — pre-cracked and ready to eat. It will keep your tables and guests tidy.
Maine summers are short! Be sure to BOOK YOUR VENDORS WELL IN ADVANCE. 12-18 months in advance is not too early. 21
If you plan a Maine wedding from afar, try to MAKE AT LEAST ONE TRIP to your destination site and meet with all of the companies you have booked.
VISIT THE CEREMONY SITE during the same time of day and year that you have scheduled your ceremony and make notes of external or environmental noise. There’s nothing like a foghorn to ruin the moment.
23
Figure out what flowers are in season in Maine for your wedding. Using SEASONAL FLOWERS in your bouquet and decor will save you money and will still look beautiful.
If you are planning a destination wedding in Maine, a great place to start is to CONTACT A LOCAL WEDDING PLANNER in the area you’d like to be wed. They’ll know all of the helpful details to get you going!
Maine is just as beautiful in the winter as it is in the summer. CONSIDER A WINTER WEDDING in the woods or on the ski slopes of one of Maine’s premiere ski resorts.

thinking seasonally!
LOOKING TO FEATURE FRESH LOCAL FLOWERS AT YOUR MAINE WEDDING? HERE ARE SOME FAVORITES THAT ARE AVAILABLE IN MAINE DURING WEDDING SEASON.
Wear SUNSCREEN and bring SUNGLASSES. Many weddings are outside, and you don’t want photos of you to show you sunburned and squinting.
If you’re worried about bugs, put a bottle of INSECT REPELLENT on each table at the reception and make use of citronella candles when decorating.
If you are planning a romantic ceremony outside on the coast, be aware that it can get quite WINDY. Make sure your hairstyle pulls your hair away from your face to keep from holding it back with your hand throughout the vows.
Two words. MUD SEASON. If you’re getting married outside in the spring, beware.
42Summer evenings can be chilly in Maine. Plan on renting PATIO HEATERS if people are going to be outside in the dark, especially on the coast, where it can be windy.
If your ceremony is in a church without a cooling system or outside in a hot area, have PAPER FANS for your guests to cool themselves.
BLACK FLY season runs from mid-May to early July. MOSQUITOS can be an issue, too. Try not to schedule your ceremony during the buggiest times of day — like dusk — if you are having an outdoor wedding.
BRING AN UMBRELLA
If it’s not going to rain, you can use it as shade.
On the coast it can get especially chilly at night in summer. Remind guests to PACK A SWEATER.

BOTH PEOPLE
GETTING MARRIED must visit the town office in person to apply for a marriage license. If either of you were married before, bring a copy of your divorce decree. You do not need to apply in the town where the wedding is planned. Different rules apply depending on where you are from, so check out maine. gov for information.
Licensed to Wed
If you are getting married at a PUBLIC PLACE, such as a park or a beach, check to see if you need permits, especially for alcohol.
Getting married in the OFF-SEASON (aka winter) may save you money on the reception site and the vendors you choose.
49There are only so many Saturdays in the summer! Consider having a wedding on ANOTHER DAY OF THE WEEK, like a Friday or Sunday — especially if the venue you want to use is already booked.
It is an urban myth that throwing rice at weddings is harmful to birds, but it does make a very real mess. Think about another FESTIVE KIND OF SEND-OFF: blow bubbles, play musical instruments, throw birdseed, or light sparklers.
TUOBA sage advice
FILE MARRIAGE INTENTIONS: The first step in obtaining a marriage license is to record the marriage intentions in writing. Both of you must sign the intentions stating you are free to marry.
WHERE TO FILE: If you are both Maine residents, file your intentions at the municipal office in the town or city where at least one of you resides.
If only one of you resides in Maine, then both of you must file your intentions at the municipal office in the town or city where you hold residency.
If neither of you is a resident of Maine, you can file intentions at any municipal office in Maine.
If either of you happen to be divorced, remember to bring a copy of your divorce decree. If you don’t have one, this can be obtained from the district court where the decree was issued. This needs to be an original document issued by the court with an embossed seal, not a photocopy. Present this to the clerk when you apply for your license and you will be good to go!
Once your intentions are filed and the license is issued, you are free to marry anywhere within the state.
ISSUING LICENSE: There is no waiting period in the state of Maine. Once your intentions to marry are filed, the license may be issued immediately with your signatures. The license must be used within 90 days (not three months) from the date the intentions were filed and can only be used in the state of Maine.
AFTER CEREMONY: The person who performed the ceremony is responsible for completing the appropriate section of your marriage license. This includes obtaining the signatures of two witnesses (traditionally your maid of honor and best man) plus the signature of the officiant.
FILLING OUT & FILING: The marriage license must be completed in black ink only. The officiant is responsible for filing the license with the municipal clerk at the municipality where the license was issued. They have seven days from when the ceremony took place to file. Once it’s filed, you’re officially married.

CATERING
BY LAURA CABOT, LAURA CABOT CATERING, WALDOBORO, MAINE
MINGLE THE BOLD colors and 1980s vibe of the past with eco-sensibilities and the concern for sustainability so prevalent with today’s couples, and you’re on trend for this season and next. Maybe GREEN is the new, trending color?
At Laura Cabot Catering, we enjoy allowing the season’s bounty to drive a menu. What ingredients are “of the moment?” What feels appropriate to the time, occasion, and place? Are there elements of shared experiences or travel the wedding couple would like to employ? How can we infuse a menu with the natural feel of the land and sea?
Wine is undoubtedly known for terroir, but how about oysters, for instance? The waters which sustain them also give them unique mineralogy and flavor, and here in Maine, we are blessed with many expert oyster growers and sea farmers. I feel the
same way about seaweed and use it judiciously in my cooking and presentation.
Along the same line, the carrots in my gardens taste much different than those from another farm. Supporting our boutique farms is a personal passion, and I love to incorporate this into my wedding menus.
Speaking of trends, I have noticed discussions on the re-emergence of bows in wedding couture. Still, unless we’re discussing farfalle pasta, I am not including them in the menu conversation. I see a renewed uptick of interest in grazing tables. Supersized and elaborate charcuterie boards with antipasti elements are a specialty here at Laura Cabot Catering. Also, small plates are seeing a comeback and are a fun way to taste many things and mingle without getting overly full.

EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN… WITH A TWIST !
For a larger-scale, crowd-pleasing menu that checks all the boxes, here is an example of a wildly popular menu we presented at an island wedding event this past autumn. It featured a raw bar with Islesboro oysters and Gulf shrimp, representing the two domiciles of the family we were serving. We also had charcuterie as a stationed appetizer.
ter·roir /ter’wär/ noun
Passed items were varied to include seasonal items (butternut squash, lateseason spinach) and to address dietary concerns such as veganism and an allergy to tree nuts.
We offered a plated salad course, which served to upscale the feel of service with an eye to the budget, and coupled that with an assortment of rustic breads and butter — always a good way to break the ice with dining table companions.
The two-sided buffet allowed the crowd to move gracefully and efficiently. The menu offered three entrées: a bespoke heritage herbed pork loin roast with demi-glace and morels, an airline chicken breast with optional caponata, and a vegetarian, glutenfree, vegan Ratatouille with parmesan on the side. The sides were a mixed rice pilaf, local parsley potato, and a medley of seasonal farm vegetables. I find that creative and hearty side dishes are one way to satisfy many different diets and tastes, and preferences. We’ve also deliberately moved to using exceptionally high-quality oils for cooking and finishing our foods as another way to please our discriminating clientele.
Although this next season marks our fortieth at Laura Cabot Catering, every season brings its lessons, trends, challenges, and triumphs. We love every bit of it and the wonderful families we have yet to serve.

PHOTOGRAPHY: Kim Chapman Photography kimchapman.com
The combination of my love of gorgeous light and color and making you comfortable in front of my lens is why I believe I’m a successful wedding and portrait photographer. If you are comfortable, I will capture your beautiful natural soul, where the magic happens. For weddings, I also like to be unobtrusive in telling the real story and shooting moments as they unfold. Strong moments are a must-have. I have also learned that no two weddings are anything alike, so each wedding needs to be photographed to complement the vibe. My advice to other photographers? Love life more than you love photography, and you will be a great photographer.
