EDITOR’S NOTE

AS I WRITE THIS in early May 2022, things continue to get back on track for the Maine wedding industry. Calendars are full, spirits are high, and preparations are underway for a full summer season of weddings across our beautiful state. I am happy to report that we received a record number of submissions for our July 2022 issue! Real weddings, styled shoots, elopements, and everything in between. It is humbling to see the breadth of talent represented in these photographs. 2021 was a tough recovery year for the wedding industry, not just in Maine but across the country. It is fantastic to see the hope represented in these submissions and the dedication of the professionals represented. It is nice to know that despite the challenges faced as businesses fully reopened, weddings continued to happen all over the state. Happy faces on brides and grooms, beautiful cakes and flowers, brightly lit tents on oceanside cliffs, and secluded forest clearings all represent what we love about Maine weddings: happy times, great memories, and photos to share. These images show resilience and the ability to bounce back, and we are thrilled to share some of these with you in this issue. You’ll notice that we have updated and expanded our layout in this issue of Real Maine Weddings. We have decided to use Maine’s wonderful geographic regions — Aroostook, Downeast an Acadia, Greater Portland & Casco Bay, The Kennebec Valley, Maine’s Lakes & Mountains, Maine’s MidCoast & Islands, The Maine Beaches, and The Maine Highlands — to frame our content. Our newly revised website expands on this, with featured weddings and other content centered around these regions. We hope Mainers and our friends from other states will find this new framing an opportunity to dig a little deeper into what each of these regions offers for weddings and tourism and continue to use Real Maine Weddings as a jumping-off place for the wedding planning process.

HOW EXCITING!

You are recently engaged and starting to plan your wedding. There are so many moving parts and possibilities. Where do you start? Here are some tips and suggestions to help you get started.

Your guests will hear everything better as the sound bounces off the curved rows of chairs.

The guests at the ends of each row will be able to see better, and no one feels left out. You’ll be able to see your guests better. It looks beautiful and elegant in photos.

CURVING YOUR CEREMONY CHAIRS semi-circle creates a more intimate ceremony and helps all your guests see you. When the chairs are curved ever so slightly around the ceremony spot...

It creates a cozier experience for your guests.

1. PERSONALITY. Meet in person or Zoom with them and get to know them. Do you jive with that person and feel comfort able?

Remember: there are no hard and fast rules to wedding planning anymore. Sit down with your partner and determine what the essential pieces are to you. Everything else will fall into place. Did you know? Whether you are a native “Mainah” or plan ning a destination wedding, thank you for choosing to have your wedding here and helping keep Maine moving in this signifi cant way! Weddings in Maine represent $1,000,000 in annual revenue. Everything you spend on venue rentals, catering, hair & makeup, transportation, equipment rentals, photog raphy, videography, etc., supports a small local business. Every dollar goes back into the local economy, and we love you for that.

It is customary to feed the professionals you have hired for your wedding celebration. This team varies but often includes your event planner , photographer, band or DJ, and officiant . Talk to your caterer about the best way to feed the team efficiently — timing is everything!

You might think you should be able to compare photogra phers the way you’d compare plumbers — who can do the job at the price you want to pay and guarantee it will turn out the way you want. Considerations such as personality, products, artistic styles, how working with us will make you feel on your wedding day, and how you’ll feel with the finished product afterward should be on your radar.

We all have different pricing structures, shooting styles, and ways of interacting with our clients. Some photographers charge a low base price and let you add options to customize your finished package. Others have an all-inclusive price, which may or may not include prints, files, albums, or other products.  Some won’t share pricing until they meet with you, and some photographers write custom quotes for each wedding. Your wedding will be different from any other we’ll see this year, so please forgive us if we spend a little more time trying to under stand how we can help you before just quoting you a price.

You’re not a leaky faucet to us, and you probably want more than just a washer replaced!

HELPING THOSE IN NEED THROUGH YOUR WEDDING A new national program has just launched that offers meals directly from your wedding to hungry people in your area! Ask your caterer if they have heard about the You Can Have Mine Initiative. This program lets individual members of the vendor team choose to waive their meals at your wedding and donate the dollar amount to a local shelter or food bank, where it will go straight to feeding hungry kids and adults in your area. Every bite counts when you are food insecure.

Getting Started!

Your caterer can also walk you through the best options for vendor meals. Some times the team eats the same meal that the guests are having. Sometimes a sepa rate buffet area is set up for the team members to eat on their schedule. Figure out what works best for your particular situation.

Planning an outdoor wedding? Rent a SOUND SYSTEM. You want your guests to be able to hear your heartfelt vows. If you’re worried about bugs, put a bottle of INSECT REPELLENT on each table at the reception and make use of citronella candles when decorating. FILE MARRIAGE INTENTIONS:

WHERE TO FILE: If you are both Maine residents, file your intentions at the municipal office in the town or city where at least one of you resides. If only one of you resides in Maine, then both of you must file your intentions at the municipal office in the town or city where you hold residency. If neither of you is a resident of Maine, you can file intentions at any municipal office in Maine. If either of you happen to be divorced, remember to bring a copy of your divorce decree. If you don’t have one, this can be obtained from the district court where the decree was issued. This needs to be an orig inal document issued by the court with an embossed seal, not a photocopy. Present this to the clerk when you apply for your license and you will be good to go! Once your intentions are filed and the license is issued, you are free to marry anywhere within the state.

It is an urban myth that throwing rice at weddings is harmful to birds, but it does make a very real mess. Think about another FESTIVE KIND OF SEND-OFF: blow bubbles, play musical instruments, throw birdseed, or light sparklers.Getting married in the OFF-SEASON (aka winter) may save you money on the reception site and the vendors you choose.

FILLING OUT & FILING: The marriage license must be completed in black ink only. The officiant is respon sible for filing the license with the municipal clerk at the municipality where the license was issued. They have seven days from when the ceremony took place to file. Su er is for Boho and Boudoir!

In a world where we’re taught not to put ourselves first, boudoir photography offers women the chance of self-love and empowerment. For many women, the idea of getting married is both exciting and nerve-wracking. There are so many decisions to make and details to plan, and it can be easy to lose sight of your own needs in the midst of it all.

That’s why more and more women are taking the time to schedule a boudoir photo shoot before their big day. Not only is it a fun way to celebrate your body and femininity, but it can also be empowering and boost your selfesteem. Many brides choose to do a boudoir shoot as a gift for their significant other, but it is also a great way to document this special time in your life. FLEXIBILITY

38 | www.realmaineweddings.com PRO MOVES

Do they have all the necessary permits, licenses, and insur ance? Working with a licensed professional caterer is essential. Workers’ comp, liability, liquor liability insur ance, etc. – these important professional items indicate that the caterer is operating following all state and local guidelines. Most venues require proof of these from the caterer, and you should too. If you are talking with a catering company that does not provide these things, keep looking.

Are the caterers you are talking to available for your date? What is the reservation process? Caterers book up quickly! You need to understand how to reserve a date with your chosen caterer. Do they require a retainer to hold the date while you work out the details? Make sure to clarify the details before booking. Most caterers require a signed contract and retainer to reserve your date.

BY SARAH MAURER, STONE COVE CATERING, BRISTOL, MAINE

Do they understand the logistics of your venue? Each venue is different – barns, hotels, private homes, etc. Each one has a unique footprint and logistical chal lenges for caterers. Make sure that the caterers you are speaking to are familiar with the venue or understand the plan from the beginning.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

FOOD PLAYS AN INTEGRAL PART in most wedding celebrations, and catering will most likely represent a large part of your overall budget. Finding the right caterer for your wedding reception could be one of the most significant decisions you’ll face as you plan your wedding weekend. Stone Cove Catering’s Sarah Maurer offers some advice on how to go about selecting the perfect caterer for your special day.

SERVICES

What rentals and services will the caterer provide? Will they help you determine the necessary rentals that you need for your wedding? Will you need to hire someone else to help coordinate the details? Some venues include many things that you need, including tables, chairs, etc. Some venues are “blank slate” venues that require everything to be rented and brought in. Check and see if the caterer plans to assist you with these details. Most caterers include services like this or offer them available for an additional charge.

How flexible will they be with dietary restrictions, children’s meals, and other special requests? Most caterers offer a variety of menu options that will allow you to cover all of your bases, but be upfront from the beginning about your needs.

LOGISTICS

CATERING EIGHT THINGS TO CONSIDER PHOTOGRAPHYHOYLEJILL(INSET)PHOTOGRAPHY;AXELROD(TOP)PHOTO:

Founded in 2002 by Sarah Maurer and her husband Todd, Stone Cove Catering is one of Maine’s premier catering companies. It is a uniquely talented group of artists who view celebratory food as an exciting expression of indi vidual style. Each event that they host is a unique occa sion and always artfully tailored to each of its clients. The Stone Cove Catering family also includes the impeccably restored antique 1812 Farm in Bristol, Maine, a 4-season wedding and event venue, and King Eider’s Pub, known for its cozy atmosphere, frosty Maine brews in handcrafted mugs, and fresh oysters harvested just steps across the street in downtown Damariscotta. Start searching for a caterer with a clear sense of what you want. This will help you quickly narrow down options and find the best catering company for your wedding.

FEES

PERSONALIZATION

Does the caterer that you are interested in offer flexible, customizable menus? Do you want to recreate a special recipe from your first date that will help tell your story as a couple? Do you have a unique idea for dessert or a late-night snack? Run these by potential caterers ahead of time to gauge their ability to personalize things for you.

What financial charges should you anticipate? Ask ahead of time about how fees will be calcu lated. Most catering companies are clear about the fees they charge, but it is up to you to understand and anticipate these charges. These can include everything from staffing and state sales tax to gratuities and travel time.

Gifts. For your intended: Think about something special to buy for your fiancée. A thoughtful and memorable gift on the wedding day will be the icing on the cake. For your groom’s party: Think about personal gifts that show your appreciation for their time and friendship. Check in with your cellular provider. If you are planning to be out of the country after the wedding, arrange for a data and calling plan that will allow you to post those honeymoon selfies in real time. Going off the grid is great, but having a working phone in case of an emergency is always a good idea.

3 MONTHS

6 TO 8 WEEKS

Sort out your attire. Are you going full traditional with a tuxedo or a more relaxed look, incorporating your own style? With this in mind, consider renting versus buying your wedding attire. Buy things you’ll want to wear again, rent those you think you’ll only want for the weekend.

2 WEEKS Get marriageyour license. In Maine, your marriage license is good for 90 days from the date of issue. You may apply for a marriage license at any town office or city hall. Don’t forget to bring your photo IDs! If this is not the first marriage for one of you, bring a certified copy (raised seal) of the divorce from or death certificate of the last spouse.

12 MONTHS

Start thinking about your honeymoon! Have you been dreaming about an exotic trip around the world or planning a mini-moon closer to home? Make sure you and your fiancée are on the same page and start pulling your ideas together to figure out what makes the best sense for you.

64 | www.realmaineweddings.com

Select the members of your groom’s party and your best man. Do this early and give everyone plenty of time to plan ahead. Start working on your gift registry. Sit down with your intended and think about what you really want and need. No one wants to buy you a blender — give your guests some good suggestions!

Start working on your guest list. This can be more complicated than you think. Give yourself time to consider the relationships with your family and friends and come up with a complete list that works for everyone.

6 MONTHS

CHECKLISTGROOM’S THINGS TO DO IN THE MONTHS LEADING TO YOUR WEDDING FASHION FUN FASHION

1 WEEK Start packing your bags. Don’t leave this to the last minute — you’ll forget something. Prepare a few words for the weekend. Even if you aren’t planning to give a speech during your wedding weekend, you might be called on at some point to say something. Being prepared makes all the difference! Write something meaningful and hide it for your intended to find on the morning of your wedding day. A thoughtful gesture like this will set the tone for the entire day.

A GREAT TIE: Dress things up with a statement tie that speaks to who you are and what you love.

MINI-MOONS Maine

MAINE IS CALLED “VACATIONLAND” FOR A REASON. NOT ONLY IS MAINE A GREAT PLACE TO GET MARRIED, IT’S A GREAT PLACE FOR A MINI HONEYMOON! STORY BY MELANIE BROOKS

PHOTOGRAPHYMCNAMARAPATRICKPHOTO:

For those Maine couples that get married right here at home, a Maine mini-moon is the perfect post-wedding retreat. If your wedding is held during the summer or fall, you might not want to miss out on the gorgeous Maine weather by taking a honeymoon right away. Why not plan your honeymoon during the winter or spring and take a quick mini-moon with your new spouse after the wedding? This will give you time to save up for the honeymoon of your dreams and trade a snowy March for drinks on the beach. Many of you have busy schedules and can’t

Many couples that plan a destination wedding in Maine extend their wedding celebra tion a few days beyond the “I do” and enjoy a Maine mini-moon. You’ve come all this way, so why not take advantage of everything Maine has to offer! You have decided to hold your wedding celebration in Maine for a reason, and we bet you didn’t have a lot of time during your wedding preparations to really get out and enjoy it. Now is the time to say “goodbye” to all your wedding guests and take some time for yourselves in a place that will forever be special to you.

HONEY

Real Maine Weddings July 2022 | 163

THE TRADITIONAL WEEKLONG honeymoon following your wedding reception is wonderful if your budget and vacation time allows for it. Many times it doesn’t, but that doesn’t mean you have to forgo a getaway all together! Shorter mini-moons (typically two nights) are becoming more popular as they are easier to fit into busy schedules and don’t break the bank.

Please note that even if an item is gener ally admitted, you may be subject to addi tional screening by a TSA official. The final ruling of what will and will not be allowed through the checkpoint rests with the TSA agent.

Carry-On Luggage Limitations Rules for carry-on luggage can differ depending on the airline, so make sure you check before heading to the airport. The general rule for American carriers is to allow their passengers to bring one carryon bag and one personal item onto the plane with them. Some airlines allow you to board with these items free of charge, and some will charge you for them. The amount charged can change depending on your destination and airline, so make sure you check before trav eling to avoid any surprise fees.

Common carry-on items that are allowed

Whole fruits (like an orange or banana)

CARRY-ON PACKING TIPS

Disposable razor Scissors (less than 4 inches in length) Plastic flatware Tools such as pliers and screwdrivers (less than 7 inches in length)

3-1-1 Breakdown: 3 = 3.4 ounces (100 ml) max of liquids, gels, aerosols, creams, and paste 1 = 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag 1 = 1 bag per passenger Travelers are permitted to carry on certain liquids, such as medication, in quantities that exceed the 3.4-ounce limit. You must declare these for inspection, and a TSA officer may open them for additional screening. If you need to bring larger quantities of liquids, gels, aerosols, creams, and pastes on your honeymoon (like sunblock, shampoo, etc.) pack them safely in your checked baggage.

Pre-packaged sauces, oils, yogurt, etc. (must be less than 3.4 ounces)

164 | www.realmaineweddings.com HONEY

Toiletries,Lighters like toothpaste, lotion, gel, or aerosol (up to 3.4 ounces each and must fit in one clear, plastic, quart-sized, resealable bag)

Carry-on bags must not exceed the following dimensions, which include handles and wheels: 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches. Or you can think of it this way, the combined length, width, and height of your carry-on bag must not exceed 45 inches, including the handles and Personalwheels.itemsmust not exceed 9 inches x 17 inches x 10 inches. Examples of a personal item include a purse, briefcase, laptop computer bag, or other similarly-sized totes. You can measure your carry-on luggage upon check in. If your bags do not meet the requirements, it may be checked and subject to applicable service charges.

3-1-1- Liquids Rule for CarryOn Luggage

take time off from work after your wedding. Some of you might be saving for a house or finishing your degree. Whatever the reason for not taking a honeymoon, a mini-moon is a great way to get away with your new husband or wife to celebrate alone. A Maine mini-moon affords you the opportunity to explore parts of Maine you may not have seen before. Hit the sand beaches in southern Maine or enjoy a quaint bed and breakfast in the midcoast. Relax by one of Maine’s pristine lakes or in a moun taintop lodge. Plan a spa service or whitewater rafting trip. Pack your hiking shoes, ski boots, or your flip-flops. The choice is yours! By driving to your destination you avoid the hassle of flying and have more time to enjoy your surroundings. Many accommoda tions will offer champagne or wine, flowers, chocolates, or other treats placed in your room upon your arrival. Surprise your new spouse with something special! Take advantage of browsing the local shops, dining at new restaurants, and trying an activity you’ve always wanted to do. You can schedule a moonlight cruise on a schooner, zip line down a mountain, rent mopeds or bikes, catch a live concert, visit a museum, take a ski lesson, try the local brew eries and wineries, and so much more. Of course, after all the activity of your wedding day, you might just want to relax and be pampered. Book a couples’ massage, hit the beach, order room service, or relax in a Jacuzzi.Aslong as you are together, it doesn’t really matter what you do! Just because a mini-moon is brief doesn’t make it less romantic than a traditional honeymoon!

The trationSecurityTransportationAdminishascreated this easy numerical system to help you remember what you are allowed to bring with you in your carry-on luggage. As a traveler, you are allowed to pack one small bag of liquids, creams, gels, etc. into your carry-on luggage, but there are limits to how much you can bring. You are permitted to carry no more than 3.4 ounces of a liquid substance onto the plane. Travelers are asked to contain their various packages of liquids in one clear, zip-top bag. This requirement helps maintain the efficiency of the checkpoint experience.

Prohibited Items Wondering if you can pack your knitting needles, fingernail clippers, or golf clubs in your carry-on luggage? (Yes, yes, no.) There’s an app for that! Download the My TSA app and use the “Can I Bring?” tool to search for items you aren’t sure are allowed in your carry-on or checked luggage. (You CAN pack golf clubs in your checked luggage.)
