EDITOR’S NOTE

AS I WRITE THIS at the beginning of winter, I reflect on the incredible 2023 wedding season. I am filled with the memories of events I attended, clients I worked with, and wedding professionals I collaborated with. It has been a great season here in Maine! Real Maine Weddings hosted the 4th annual 2023 Maine Weddings EDU conference in South Portland in October. We had record attendance and a fantastic lineup of speakers that included Chef Nettie Frank, Kunbi Odubogun, Jaclyn Watson, Terrica, and Marc McIntosh, as well as local pros including Michelle Fratianne, Rob Labelle, The Wellness Connection, the State of Maine Liquor Bureau, and Jerry Bazata. Aisle Planner, caron&co, Life in Focus, M.A.N.E. Catering, and Total Party Planner provided invaluable sponsorships. It was great to spend two days with other wedding professionals, learning and discovering new ways to enhance local wedding businesses and make the experience even better for you, our clients. We are excited to announce the launch of our new website, coming in early 2024! It will feature all new content to help you as you plan your wedding. You’ll find anything and everything you’ll need— from florals and cakes to attire and jewelry — in one comprehensive place at realmaineweddings.com! Look for a launch announcement in January 2024. Our team hopes that you enjoy this new issue of Real Maine Weddings! It is always exciting to see the scope and breadth of the weddings in Maine each season. The talent that goes into producing them and the smiling faces of couples, families and guests are a heartwarming reminder of all that’s good in the world.

HOW EXCITING!

You are recently engaged and starting to plan your wedding. There

are so many moving parts and possibilities. Where do you start? Here are some tips and suggestions to help you get started.

Remember: there are no hard and fast rules to wedding planning

essential pieces are to you. Everything else will fall into place.

bar staff, will have gratuity as a line item in the ask if you have questions. Make sure to clarify, especially if you’re unsure what the cost or line item may

directly or to another service you are receiving. When

gratuity is not included, prepare the gratuity ahead of time. In situations where there is staff that should be

If you’re flying in from out of state, KEEP YOUR WEDDING ATTIRE ON HAND. Pack it in your carry-on bag and have it pressed when you arrive.

SCOPE OUT TRANSPORTATION options early. When you plan your Maine wedding, remember there aren’t multiple airports, bus stations, or public transportation venues for your guests to choose from.

LEAVE TIME for people “from away” to get lost.

14 | www.realmaineweddings.com

If people are driving, provide SUGGESTED REST STOPS. I-95 can go on for miles without one, so be prepared.

BE AWARE OF TRAFFIC. Coastal Maine is a popular place in the summer, and Route 1 can come to a standstill, making travel time between the church and the reception longer than planned.

PUT SIGNS UP along the road in rural areas so your guests won’t get lost.

CONSIDER PROVIDING TRANSPORTATION. If people are coming in from out of town for your wedding, consider hiring a party bus, van, or even a trolley to take guests from their hotels to the wedding ceremony, to the reception (if it’s in a different location), and back to their hotels. It will save on parking spaces and offer your guests a safe alternative to driving.

Planning an island wedding? Remember these two words: FERRY SCHEDULE. You don’t want your guests to miss the boat.

Rural areas can lack a large number of available accommodations. Be prepared to BOOK ROOMS AND GUEST HOUSES well in advance.

Want to send your guests home with a bit of piece of Maine? How about a sapling? The Maine state tree is the EASTERN WHITE PINE. Have your guests plant the tree and help the environment.

One great way to have an authentic and greener wedding is to PURCHASE SUPPLIES LOCALLY. Incorporate Maine food, drink, and favors.

16

SERVE LOCAL FAVORITES like Maine microbrews, blueberries, whoopie pies, and fiddleheads. Many people can’t get these things where they live.

Lobster is a Maine tradition, but it’s messy! If you plan to serve lobster, consider serving it “LAZY LOBSTER” style — pre-cracked and ready to eat. It will keep your tables and guests tidy.

Maine summers are short! Be sure to BOOK YOUR VENDORS WELL IN ADVANCE. 12-18 months in advance is not too early.

planning from afar 21 O M A WA Y

If you plan a Maine wedding from afar, try to MAKE AT LEAST ONE TRIP to your destination site and meet with all of the companies you have booked.

VISIT THE CEREMONY SITE during the same time of day and year that you have scheduled your ceremony and make notes of external or environmental noise. There’s nothing like a foghorn to ruin the moment.

Figure out what flowers are in season in Maine for your wedding. Using SEASONAL FLOWERS in your bouquet and decor will save you money and will still look beautiful.

23

If you are planning a destination wedding in Maine, a great place to start is to CONTACT A LOCAL WEDDING PLANNER in the area you’d like to be wed. They’ll know all of the helpful details to get you going! Maine is just as beautiful in the winter as it is in the summer. CONSIDER A WINTER WEDDING in the woods or on the ski slopes of one of Maine’s premiere ski resorts.

Since going barefoot on the beach is a norm, offer your guests PRE-MOISTENED TOWELETTES so that they can wash their feet before putting their shoes back on.

tive Chef and Owner of M.A.N.E. Catering, there is one place during your wedding where you should put yourself first, no

“I always tell my couples to spoil themselves for your

food,” said Orgo. “There are so many ways you’ll bend over backward to make people happy, but if you’re paying for the food, you should have exactly what you want, even if it isn’t what you think is ‘wedding food.’”

With a career that began with 15 years working stren-

uous hours in restaurants, Nick Orgo turned to catering to have a happier balance with his home life. He was looking for

a schedule that would leave evenings and Sundays open for family, while still working with food. He started catering as a chef for a different company, and in 2014 he decided he was

ready to stop working for other people and strike out on his own with M.A.N.E. Catering so he could do things his own way. With M.A.N.E. Catering now flourishing in Bridgton out

of a restaurant/kitchen space called Stella’s on the Square (named for his daughter) and as the new owner of the Bear

Mountain Inn in Waterford, Nick has become the expert at

doing things his way. When working with his clients at M.A.N.E. Catering, he encourages them to think of their wedding food in this way too.

“In my opinion, the food should be all about the couple

and no one else,” said Nick. “Wedding planning starts to feel like it’s a day for all their friends and family, but really, it should be a day for themselves.”

While M.A.N.E. Catering does provide sample menus on

their website, when Nick and his team talk to their couples, the most important question they ask is, “What would you like to eat?”

“Couples have this idea that the food at their wedding

needs to be fancy, but it is about what is fancy for them,” says Nick of menu planning. “If they want steak for dinner but

them changing everything,” says Nick. “With the way things are, you have to be flexible with your catering. Everything

Nick credits his love of catering to people with his Greek

and Italian heritage. As he has taken on a more client-facing role within M.A.N.E. Catering, he has found joy in working

with couples for their day and helping them create a menu that is true to who they are and what they love.

“I love incorporating special food to a couple, like serving

tuna the groom caught or vegetables your family grew for a reception,” says Nick. “Being there for their day, seeing it through to the end of the day, and watching them be so happy is special to me.”

As out-of-state clients come to sample what Maine does

best, M.A.N.E. Catering helps to embrace the fruits of the

ocean while also encouraging their clients to think “outside the roll,” creating summer delicacies like lobster deviled eggs and a decadent lobster-stuffed donut with tarragon mayo.

“Food at weddings is becoming about the show, the expe-

rience,” says Nick of current wedding trends. “It’s not always

about the 300-person event with a sit-down meal; it’s more about large grazing tables, outdoor grills. It’s more acceptable

to be yourself and express yourself through your wedding, making it more fun.”

For Nick, the most important thing is to remember what

the day is really about and to only invite the people you know will share in the joy of the day, no matter what ends up on their table.

“It’s about what makes you happy, not anyone else,” says

Nick. “Invite people who support you. Everyone there should be happy to have RC Cola and hot dogs because the day is not

about what they eat; it’s about having your best day. If your best day is pizza, then let’s have pizza! People forget that they aren’t there for the food but for the love.”

2024 TRENDS & STYLES

S hapes&Textures DAY’S JEWELERS HAS BEEN BRINGING JEWELRY TRENDS TO ITS CUSTOMERS SINCE 1914. THESE TRENDING RINGS ARE SURE TO BRING ADDED SPARKLE AND EXCITEMENT TO YOUR WEDDING DAY.

DISTINCTIVE PAIRINGS

Much like the adage, “opposites attract,”

sometimes the most vital partnerships

merge the unexpected, and once-disparate

elements augment and bolster one another. For a modern

look, we love the distinctive pairing of gemstone geometry, seen in this 14kt yellow gold band featuring classic round and bold baguette bezel-set diamonds intimately nestled together

Round and Baguette Diamond Bezel Band in 14kt Yellow Gold (3/8 ct tw)

in glimmering dynamism. Like your love story, there’s beauty and strength in bringing out the best in one another.

Nestle your engagement ring perfectly within the loving contours of a curved band, like a custom-fit hug. Whether you

choose a subtle, gradual curve or favor a bold or sharp look, pairing a curved or contour band with your engagement setting is a perfect way to

create a truly custom stack to tell your love story your way.

SHARP SHAPES

Try an eye-catching, sharp shape for a striking update on the

traditional. We love the bold design of this pear band, featuring not fancy-cut diamonds but round stones outfitted

in distinctively bold settings. This modern band packs a visual punch while maintaining the softness and glamour of a classically romantic bridal moment.

A WHOLE LOT OF LOOK

Ovals are one of the hottest bridal trends in 2024 and are often favored in engagement rings for their effect of visually elongating

the wearer’s finger. The symmetry of an oval

Oval Diamond Band in 14kt White Gold (13/4 ct tw)

cut also lends itself to the visual implication of an even

larger stone. So, in selecting your wedding band, why not go for a whole lot of look?! We love the look of an oval wedding

band for its striking beauty and bold styling — a ring that is a testament to your marriage and is sure to turn heads. PLAYFUL PARTNERS

Selecting a wedding band should be a joy, and it can sometimes be overwhelming if you find yourself torn

in your decision-making process. Find yourself

drawn to both the simplicity of an unadorned band and

crave the sparkle of a diamond eternity. Do you love both distinctive textures and want the high gloss look of polish? Might we suggest the “both/and” route? We love the exquisite

Diamond and High Polish Band in 14kt Yellow Gold (1/4ct tw)

interplay of textures, features, and design elements of these bands, making playful partners for any and everyone.

TOUGH AND TENDER

You deserve a ring that will withstand everything you put it

through. This buffed, yellow-toned tungsten wedding band perfectly blends love’s classic symbolism and

modern-day durability and style. Crafted

simply for the modern-day spouse, this ring is sure to be there through it all.

ETERNAL EMERALDS

The very vintage look of Emerald Cuts is

having a majorly modern cultural moment, as are bold bezels. Why not embrace the eternity of this look with a stunning Emerald Cut

Bezel Eternity Band? This true showstopper

will become an iconic and treasured family
