P

ro-Health International (PHI) is a faithbased non-governmental organization working for the health of all people, especially those in the rural areas of Africa. Through provision of medical consultation, surgery, eye care, dental care, health promotion, and sharing the love of Christ with the people, PHI brings love and hope to the hopeless and needy. Inspired by the example of foreign missionaries who came to Nigeria to render free health care to the poor, PHI was established in 1991 to care for the less privileged in rural Africa. One of the objectives of establishing the organization was to challenge African health care professionals to imbibe the spirit of giving back to the society. Based in the middle belt region of Nigeria, PHI has grown from carrying out 2 to 3 medical missions yearly to executing over 45 medical missions annually especially in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Other African countries like Ghana, Liberia, Gambia, Togo, South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique, Burundi, Zambia, Mali, Kenya, Niger Republic, Malawi and Burkina Faso have also benefitted from her services. PHI is the largest volunteer-based free healthcare provider in West Africa. The heart of PHI's work is helping to bring free health care to the communities lacking easy access to health care majority of which are located in rural areas. This lack of access, either through land barriers, lack of finances or knowledge of their need for proper health care contributes significantly to the increased morbidity and mortality in the various communities. Vital to these medical missions are our sponsors and partners who render technical and financial assistance and contribute in no small measure towards the success of our free health care projects. Though we have come some distance, the work ahead is enormous. We are however convinced that as we continue to develop new partnerships, attract more donors, these seemingly endless vistas will be surmountable.

SURGICAL UNIT The presence of PHI projects within the rural areas just in the nick of time has made a lot of impact within the communities. We believe God rules and reigns in the affairs of men. For example in 2006, during one of our projects in Eket, Akwa Ibom, a woman with obstructed labor was rushed to the project site, an emergency caesarian was performed by able hands, delivering both mother and child who recovered well subsequently . Another example of God's special mission occurred in August 2003 in Okigwe, Imo state were in partnership with NDDC, PHI was able to perform and remove a 15KG tumor from 36 year old Precious Ibifuruba, native of Okrika, Rivers State, whose history began 14 years ago, where initially it was assumed she was pregnant although all pregnancy tests were negative. When her delivery time was past and her abdomen progressively increased, the story took a different toll. She began seeking treatment and help from traditional herbalists. Her friends and families forsook her and many carried rumors that she was a witch being punished. The surgical removal of this 15kg tumor marks the beginning of a new hope for Precious Ibifuruba. We believe in making a difference and this turned out to be a huge one.

NIGER

BEFORE SURGERY

DURING SURGERY

The grave condition of Niger’s Healthcare is a matter of deep concern to the nation, as it is one of the main causes of countless deaths occurring in the country from time to time. The main reason for the incredible loss of lives in Niger is because the people are totally ignorant and unconscious of healthrelated issues. This ignorance results from lack of education and knowledge for most of the population. A handful of serious diseases, which strike the nation quite often, form the primary concern to the Nigerien Healthcare system. Among such diseases, diphtheria, pertussis, measles and tetanus affect the population in the worst possible ways, taking the form of epidemics and claiming numerous lives. Most of these diseases are outcomes of unhygienic and unsanitary living and feeding conditions of the people, which facilitate outbreak of such infective maladies.

Pro-Health International has three Mobile Surgical Units (MSUs), one donated by the Times Square Church New York, USA, and two from the Niger Delta Development Commission [NDDC]. These MSUs tread into rugged rural area s with no functi onal surgi cal faci lities. Over the past few years hundreds of surgeries have been performed in the Mobile Surgical Units.

Each year, millions of children and mothers could be saved through improved access to basic health interventions. Those who most desperately need them - the rural poor - live in remote villages where the cost of reaching them could be five times greater than urban areas. ProHealth in partnership with The Samaritan’s Feet bridged this gap through its medical out reach. 54 Improving the Health of Africa's People

In rural Gambia, the result of having so little money is that the rural people are desperately short of the doctors, nurses, equipment and appropriate drugs. Patients are incredibly stoical but need and deserve better care - patients are dying everyday because they can’t get drugs, equipment, doctors or nurses. The Health personnel and NGOs are constantly trying to improve the services they offer and are having some successes in this regards. 20

VOLUNTEERING

INTERNATIONAL MISSIONS

The time I have spent in Nigeria with Pro-Health has really exceeded all expectations. There are several things that really impressed me since I’ve been in Nigeria. The first thing is the way Pro-Health is so Christ-centered. The second thing is that Christ is seen through all the staff and volunteers. I have also learned a lot of practical things as far as doing medical missions in the rural areas is concerned. I know projects can be so intense-I would do it all over again, and glad God used me to bless others. Lubov Naranovich OR Nurse

I feel fulfilled using my profession to serve God and humanity. I will always make myself available any time I am called upon. Hope Nesianisimu, Dental Surgeon

I am grateful to God for giving me an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of many people across Nigeria. Its wonderful being God's hands touching people and leaving them with hope and joy. Manji Bonkat, Physician

It was a great opportunity to serve. I have learnt that nothing is too small or to big to offer. PHI has provided me the opportunity to give my time and skill. Karry Barrows Volunteer

I have been working with Pro-health for the past 5 months and it has been very demanding due to the large crowds of people on project site, I have also learnt to do things here that ordinarily I wouldn’t have known how to do. I love Pro-health, thank you and God bless. Jim Ferriter Logistics

I have been a volunteer since 1996 and have been volunteering ever since. The experience has been rewarding both professionally and spiritually. It has given me the opportunity of knowing and serving Jesus better with other volunteers. I encourage other young volunteers to sign up and contribute their quotas. Jacob Abimiku Physician

Being a blessing to people in need is the most rewarding experience anyone should aspire to have. It affords you the opportunity to serve God Toma Gabriel Physician

PHI is God-sent to Africa, as a health service provider & evangelism NGO. I count it a privilege & a blessing to be a part of it. Katharine Jones Logistics

My first mission trip was in 1996, each time I am opportuned to attend a medical mission, I get excited. All of the time the crowd is overwhelming, but the most interesting part of it is that lives are being touched both spiritually and physically. I love the mission and will always volunteer my skills and time to the glory of God. Zainab Fagboyo, OR Nurse

BURUNDI

Being a volunteer has been very enlightening. The need for healthcare is enormous. Its been a great opportunity to serve God and humanity. Mercy Okharedia, Optometrist

I have been involved in PHI mission trips for about 4 years and they are usually exciting moments for me, physically ,mentally and spiritually. It can be physically draining and demanding but God gives us the grace to carry on. The fact that volunteers are able to give of their time for free impresses me, and I know God is honored in our giving. The people are appreciative and that gives me joy. I look forward to more mission trips. Francis Akor, Pediatrician.

Volunteering for PHI has changed my life. It’s given so much reality to my faith, and has helped sharpen my focus. I‘ve seen God at work even in seemingly mundane events, and I now appreciate many gifts of life I once took for granted. Thank God for PHI.. Ann Goetcheus Physician

Mission work would not be more stressful, yet enjoyable and refreshing. Most amazing is how everyone lay their trophies aside and work so harmoniously together. I dare say no hospital, I've seen has ever achieved that. Korede Pharmacist

my time in Nigeria has exceeded any expectations I had. I‘ve had experiences & learned lessons that I’ll carry for the rest of my life. I've learned what it means to give. God willing I will work with PHI again in the future, whether I do or not, one thing I know is that Pro-Health will always be part of me. Nik Godshall Evangelist

The President of Burundi, Pierre Nkurunziza in a praise session during medical mission in Burundi

Burundi today faces a great many challenges. In addition to the real difficulties in guaranteeing access to health care due to the high cost of consultations in public health facilities, aid agencies are still having major difficulties reaching the most vulnerable people. The link between poverty and health is now well known, and health is recognised as an essential requirement for economic development. Yet there are hundreds of thousands of Burundians who have no access to basic health care as a result of their inability to pay for it. Pro-Health International Profile 47
