Chris Burkard took this photo on the Aleutian Islands off Alaska. The secret behind its beauty: “Research, experience and timing”

"KEEP IT NATURAL“ Prize-winning outdoor photographer Chris Burkard’s clients include Apple, the BBC and National Geographic. Here, the man whose Instagram account has 3.5 million followers explains how amateur snappers can come home with spectacular holiday shots, too. destination red bull: What makes a good holiday photograph?

8

chris burkard: It’s all about being able to capture the spirit of the moment. I’ve always tried to create images that are timeless – photographs that could have been shot at any time allow the viewer to think that it could be them on the picture. Whether on social media or printed to hang on the wall, these are the images that tend to last.

Thanks to smartphones, everyone’s an amateur photographer these days. But if I genuinely want to improve, what rules should I observe? For the basics there’s Google. But a good start is to use the first and last 20 minutes of the day because that’s when the lighting is best. And when you purchase your first lens, I recommend a prime [one that doesn’t zoom]. That forces you to interact with your subject instead of zooming in from an impersonal distance. The rest is practice. Shoot as much as you can for the camera to become an extension of your body.

Do I have to invest in some expensive equipment, or will I be OK just using my smartphone? Technology is less important than the composition of your picture. During my travels in India and Cuba I’ve often seen how intimidating a big camera can be, whereas nobody fears a smartphone. The smaller the camera, the more naturally people act. xclusive coaching on a very secret track, lessons from the experts in MotoGP and the odd action-packed surprise here and there… Two Destination Red Bull guests reveal how they spent their time in Barcelona. And the trip with our seasoned guides is on the programme once again for 2020!

Your playground: Sete Gibernau’s private track is normally reserved for professionals and VIPs. Here you’ll learn the finer details of riding a motorbike

20

“ Sete didn’t just say hello, he did everything himself” Fans Sandra and Markus (second from left) with Sete Gibernau and Dani Pedrosa

You have been following the MotoGP circus for 16 years and know most of the circuits. And then your husband came along with an odd proposal in November 2018... markus: I’d read a report on the Destination Red Bull trip with Sete Gibernau. My wife had once been on a Ducati MotoGP two-seater in 2011 at Silverstone. And I thought to myself that this trip would also be something for us! sandra: Indeed – the things my husband finds online! (She laughs.) So we flew to Barcelona even though we didn’t really know what to expect. So there we were, eating dinner when Sete Gibernau, his sister and her son suddenly appeared. It was surreal. It

You didn’t just have dinner – you also visited him at his private racetrack. What’s it like there? sandra: Yes, he’s actually built his own track behind his garden. It’s 1.3 kilometres long. He cobbled together all his favourite turns from various tracks for the layout. markus: You can see the final turn at Valencia, the snail-shell-like section from China, the two quick turns at Mugello and then a chicane that resembles the one in Assen. sandra: And there were already six motorbikes standing there in a sort of pit lane. There were computer screens, changing rooms… plus someone else – Dani Pedrosa! He was your second Destination Red Bull coach. Which motorbikes did you end up riding? ? sandra: Mini-bikes. And even though we had our own leathers with us, Sete gave us some of his that were brand new and still shrink-wrapped. markus: He said we’d only be able to drag our knees on the tarmac in these. sandra: To which I said, ‘But we’re not going to drag our knees on the tarmac’. ‘You are,’ Gibernau said with a laugh. ‘You’ll get down that low.’ Well, that did sound reassuring after he’d mentioned it. And I really did manage it in the end. markus: Gibernau took care of everything himself. I had mistakenly believed that he would just come and say hello and let other people do the work. D E S T I N AT I O N R E D B U L L

SHUTTERSTOCK, GOLD & GOOSE/RED BULL CONTENT POOL

destination red bull: Sandra and Markus, you describe yourselves as MotoGP-crazy. Can you describe what you mean by that? sandra: We’ve been hooked on MotoGP ever since we went to our first race in Barcelona in 2003. Sete Gibernau was my first hero. We enjoy the scene so much that we’ve resolved to visit every MotoGP circuit at least once. I think that’s more exciting than visiting the same place over and over.

was Sete who had – without realising it – first attracted us to the sport. And now – here he was, standing right in front of us.

Buzzing Barcelona: locals and tourists alike head to its inviting beaches

A legion of fans: Marc Mรกrquez is celebrated as a local hero

21

D E S T I N AT I O N 2

sandra: First of all he explained to us how the bikes worked. You change gear in the opposite direction because that’s the best way to accelerate from the tilt. Dani and Sete led the way with two out of a total of four participants always behind them.

markus: We stopped after six laps each time and then Dani and Sete went through the data with us. Braking, accelerating, changing down, coming into the turn. sandra: We rode from 10am to 5pm, except for a lunch-break. By the end I’d managed to perfect my line, except for on that Valencia turn, which I just couldn’t get the hang of. I prefer quick turns: left, right, left. markus: I’m not as good a rider as Sandra. I only really wanted to see how it was done but I soon got into it. However at the end Sete said I had surprised him the most.

Your stylish accommodation in Barcelona: Hotel Barceló Raval

And then there was another bonus for Sandra afterwards… sandra: There was. And what a bonus! Gibernau appeared with a long-legged enduro bike and let me ride on the back with him. The bike was stable. We touched our knees on the tarmac. And then he went and did a wheelie too! It was really amazing. And at this point you hadn’t even been to the real race yet. sandra: That evening and the next day there was the Barcelona MotoGP and we had access to Red Bull hospitality while we were there. Dani Pedrosa just took us in with him – the security staff could only look on in amazement. Later on we watched the race from the pits. People dropped in and said hello – the people who we’d seen earlier, only now we were on the inside. I’d do the whole thing again straight away if I could. I hope my husband reads it the next time it’s advertised!

‘‘Stay on in Barcelona for longer and let us show you the hippest spots in town. As well as all the regular sights, the city offers plenty of new discoveries and well-known traditions. We’ve prepared a few secret tips of our own and would love to tweet them over to you!” Arguably the most beautiful terrace in Barcelona: from the rooftop of your hotel there is an panoramic view over the houses and down to the sea

destination red bull: You have now been travelling the world as one of the top cliff divers for a good two decades. You keep coming back

On this trip you’ll attend the Red Bull Cliff-Diving competition and learn to cliff-dive yourself. But it’s also about the “water experience”. What does that mean exactly? You will get to know the ocean surrounding the island in all its glory. The Azores aren’t a typical snorkelling destination but there are spectacular gullies to explore either by diving or swimming.

“ You’ll get to know the ocean surrounding the island in all its glory. If you’re lucky, you might even see whales” Orlando Duque, 45, is the Destination Red Bull Tour Guide

Trip tip: make time to visit the Church of St. Sebastian in Ponta Delgada on the Azores island of São Miguel

26

to São Miguel Island in the Azores. What is it that makes this place so special? orlando duque: Firstly, the island’s in the middle of the Atlantic. There’s nothing but water all around you. Portugal is 1,300 kilometres away. You’ll find nature on the Azores so beautiful and the cliffs are rough, like the ones we know from the Irish coastline. Add to that predictable, sub-tropical weather and exciting dive locations.

Is it true that one often sees dolphins? At least, that’s what every guidebook to the Azores says. You really do come across dolphins pretty often. If you’re lucky, you might even see whales! Blue whales, fin whales, sperm whales and other species are to be found around the islands. The variety is astounding. For the Red Bull Cliff Diving competition and the workshop, you cross from São Miguel to the volcanic Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo. We found amazing online photos of some spots there, too... It’s a very special, magical place. The island is actually a collapsed volcanic crater with a lagoon in the middle, where you can snorkel. Access to the island is limited. I said to the people who’d booked the Destination Red Bull package in 2018, “Enjoy the moment. Not many people get to come here.” You even get to explore the island by diving, trekking and leaping off cliffs. What is it that makes this tiny island so good for cliff diving? You can find more than one hundred good places to dive from on its rocky coastline. From very high for the Red Bull Cliff Diving professionals to very low rocks for the rookies. D E S T I N AT I O N R E D B U L L

DEAN TREML/RED BULL CONTENT POOL, GETTY IMAGES

ou could discuss water with Orlando Duque for hours on end. A veteran of the international cliffdiving elite, Duque was the first winner of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in 2009 and in 2013 he was crowned the FINA [International Swimming Federation] Cliff-Diving World Champion. The 45-year-old Colombian spent most of his working life in oceans or diving pools. And he has continued to explore the world’s oceans as a diver, swimmer and canoeist even since bringing his career to an end in 2019. “Water relaxes you and makes you happy,” Duque says of his element. On this, his third Destination Red Bull trip to the Azores, he’ll be bringing the ocean alive for his guests in a way no-one else can.

Only professionals can fly like this: Duque cliff-diving on the IlhĂŠu de Vila Franca. Participants in his workshop will dive from up to 14 metres

27

27

D E S T I N AT I O N 3

You’ll let whoever books this package in on the secrets of cliff diving. What can I, as an amateur, learn at your workshop? I will teach you how to enjoy cliff diving. And everything is tailor-made to suit my guests. One can start very

low – from one, two, three metres. But I can also teach you to dive from 12 to 14 metres up. It’s all easy! I can’t really believe that! The key is being comfortable in the air. A lot of people dive and then seize up in the air. You can still keep your balance on the descent and correct your pose, like you would on a slackline. I can teach you all these techniques. I promise it will be fun. I’m still thinking about the 12-14 metre thing. What exactly is fun about that?? It’s fun to experience the moment of fear before you dive. That’s totally normal. But when you come back out of the water, you feel an enormous surge of joy because you had the guts to go through with it. That’s an important thing to realise.

So will I find out something about myself if I cliff dive? You will. The thing you need to learn is that we’re often only afraid of something because we don’t know everything there is to know about the subject. Cliff diving totally falls into that category. But I’ll give you the tools you need to conquer your fear. So this means I’ll be able to talk shop with the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series stars when we have dinner together after the competition. As a guest, who do recommend I talk to? The whole gang is amusing company, but Gary Hunt would definitely be a good choice. He’s a British athlete and a six-time world champion. Gary also likes gardening, playing the piano and juggling. You definitely won’t get bored talking to him.

Room with a view: just a few steps from your balcony to the great outdoors

“Why leave when it’s so lovely here? There are countless ways to enjoy the ilhas dos Açores, as the locals call them. With everything from island-hopping to ecolodges, it was love at first sight for us Birds with the goshawk [açor is Portuguese for goshawk] islands and we’re sure it will be for you too.” Bird’s-eye view: Pedras Do Mar Resort & Spa lies right on the rugged northern coast of the Azores main island of São Miguel

He is also an informal and approachable man who communicates with people in a very direct and friendly way. “Goldi,” Manfred Köstinger begins, “is a happy guy. And he’ll share very personal things with you, even when you’re meeting him for the first time. You just realise how nice he is straight away!”

The personal coach. Salzburgnative Manfred Köstinger first met Andi in Vienna last May at the Wings for Life World Run where Goldi was working his magic as a Destination Red Bull guide to make the running experience as pleasant as possible for a small group of participants. “Andi came and got our starting numbers with us the day before and told us about the course,” Manfred explains. “That evening we had dinner with him and the well-known runners. We were in the same hotel, had breakfast together and then went to the start. We made our final preparations in the VIP area and then set off with

the top athletes from the front row.” So definitely not a quick handshake and then ciao but, as Manfred puts it, “real high-level care”. Andi is an old hand when it comes to the Wings for Life World Run. 2019 was his fifth time, even though he doesn’t like long road races. He is more of a mountain runner and he has never done a marathon. “But I see the Wings for Life World Run as an obligation. Firstly, it’s a cool idea! You run until you’re caught by the Catcher Car. Which means the quicker you run, the longer you run too. And I like the fact that all the participation D E S T I N AT I O N R E D B U L L

fees go into research to help find a cure for spinal injuries. So we’re running for those who can’t run themselves. It’s a great thing to do!” Ten ankle operations. Charity was also an important part of Manfred Köstinger’s logic for taking part in the race. For very personal reasons. The hotelier from the Austrian town of Bad Hofgastein broke his ankle six years ago and during the operation, the wound became infected. This resulted in nine further operations and for a while Manfred didn’t know if he would be able to keep his leg at all. “You only get through something like that if you have a super physical constitution,” he says, looking back. And he did. Indeed top-level sport is something of a tradition in the family. Urban centre: in the MuseumsQuartier, art meets comfort

His grandfather participated in the Nordic combined event at the 1936 Olympics in Garmisch, and his uncle was the top-rated Central European in the same event at the 1964 Olympics in Innsbruck. Manfred made it into the Austrian Skiing Association squad himself until his hotel eventually took priority over sport. He was also a pretty good amateur runner, running 16 marathons over the course of 13 years, and recorded a personal best time of 2 hours 40 minutes. And then the ankle happened and sport took a back seat for a while. Bid and run. When Manfred saw

the sports auction on the Austrian TV channel ORF telethon Licht ins Dunkel [Light into the Dark] and realised that he could bid for a spot in the Destination Red Bull package with Andi Goldberger as his coach for the Wings for Life World Run in Vienna, he immediately thought to himself: “I’m up for that! I wanted to give this to myself as a present to motivate myself to start over!” And how did they both do? Whereas Andi got up to 39 kilometres – and was very happy, at that – Manfred was caught at the 10-kilometre mark. “My dream would have been to keep up with Andi but it wasn’t possible with my foot and the bad weather,” he says. But the experience was still a special one. As was the helicopter trip with Thomas Morgenstern – another ski-jumping legend who is a friendly figure to talk to – who was caught later due to the bad weather in Vienna. But that’s another story.

Evening mood: Anyone wanting to explore Vienna while here for the Wings for Life World Run should make a detour to the culinary scene by the Danube Canal

Our destination: the dramatic Verdon Gorge in southern France, a prime limestone climbing area

An epic climbing road trip with Stefan Glowacz. The Bavarian adventurer has been exploring the Verdon Gorge in the south of France for 20 years. Now you get to accompany him on one of his legendary trips for the first time. Here our guide tells you what you can expect when you travel to Europe’s Grand Canyon

s a climber and adventurer I’ve been fascinated by the Verdon Gorge for over 20 years now. It’s a huge trench a two-hour drive west of Nice that stretches through Provence for 40 kilometres. The Verdon River has gorged its way 700 metres down into the rock there over the course of several million years. That’s why the gorge is known as the Grand Canyon of Europe. The sight of the steep rockfaces takes my breath away every time. And the quality of the limestone is incomparable. I now go to the Verdon Gorge almost every year. And I really like the climbing lifestyle there too.

tourists have left by the time we arrive in September. You’ll have enough time to explore the extensive gorge on our 10-day trip. I know the Verdon area like the back of my hand and can show you routes that you won’t find in any guidebook. A small advantage you get from knowing the French locals. A gorge highlight. The important

thing is that we only climb where my guests feel comfortable. So we take a cautious approach and start with easy routes on the surrounding crags. That way you slowly get used to the quality of the local rock. One thing I will advise: you should be able to climb safely to grade six on the French scale and know basic rope techniques, i.e. belaying and abseiling, for you to be able to enjoy the trip together to the greatest extent possible. That being the case, there’s absolutely nothing standing in the way of the highlight of the trip: a longer, multi-pitch tour into the Verdon Gorge. There are multiple extraordinary routes of varying levels of complexity. We’ll find the right one for every participant. And expert professional mountain guides will accompany us into the gorge itself,

I’ve acquired over 40 years of such expeditions, not just when it comes to the climbing itself but also how to plan an expedition and how to camp in the middle of nowhere. I can talk about mistakes and about strategies that work well when you’re on the move. In a nutshell: I want to be an open book for my guests. Moments that last an eternity. What should the takeaway from our trip be? For me, life is a sequence of moments. And the more intense those moments are, the less you forget them. That’s where the real wealth in life is. I’ve already had many such unforgettable moments in the Verdon Gorge: when you’ve found a pleasant spot and the vultures fly past you majestically, one after the other, and your gaze follows them. Or when you’re down in the ravine by the river and the water is glistening and you’re all alone. Those moments have special value in my life. That’s why I want to pass them onto my guests.”

Red Bull Rampage might be the only event where every spectator has their fingers crossed for every participant. Thanks to Gee’s insider knowledge, we know in advance which line which riders are going to take and what tricks they’d been working on in the days running up to the event and yet some of them even manage to surprise him. Party with the stars. Being at Red Bull Rampage live means goosebumps all day long, means joy for the winners, means exclusive access to the contest after-party and the world’s best freeriders as a Destination Red Bull participant. There won’t be a dry eye in the house. When we

Mandalay Bay, Caesars Palace, MGM Grand: we pass one legendary hotel after the other. The Vegas effect. We settle in the

Wynn, right on Las Vegas Boulevard, change a handful of dollars into quarters and promptly feed them into various slot machines. Some clichés can’t be avoided. Though saying that, one of our party does have a small windfall! We soak up the atmosphere of this garish, wild and yet unique city. What a contrast to the previous days on the dusty rocks of Utah. And what an inimitable and action-packed trip!

“Were you taken with Zion National Park, the backdrop to Red Bull Rampage? Then don’t miss other highlights such as the Horseshoe Bend downstream from Lake Powell, a spectacular sunrise at The View Hotel in Monument Valley, the Grand Canyon and Route 66. 10 FACTS ABOUT YOUR TRIP

landlocked country 5 The of Lesotho

When the Paris-Dakar race was first held in 1979, the organisers already had the Roof of Africa experience to fall back on. Drivers and motorcyclists had set off to “conquer the worst road in South Africa” as far back as 1967. And that was the verdict of Bob Phillips, the engineer who’d just constructed it. Fans consider the Roof of Africa as the “mother of all hardenduro races”.

the winners’ 2 Exploring playground

Today’s Roof of Africa no longer has anything to do with the “worst road” of those early days. The course now has no roads, just trails at best. The skills needed are similar to those required to do well at the Erzberg Rodeo (in the Austrian state of Styria). So don’t be surprised that the list of winners in the last few years is similar to that for the Erzberg: Graham Jarvis, Chris Birch... On your tour, you’ll explore the picturesque landscape where the Roof is held and follow in the professionals’ footsteps.

68

Your Destination Red Bull guide Alfie Cox is unsurpassed with his nine Roof of Africa wins. But there is currently a changing of the guard. His son Bradley first entered the B-class race aged 19, led until day two and ended up coming home in second with his father waving frantically at the finish line. “An emotional day for me. The Roof of Africa has always been my favourite race. It was overwhelming seeing Bradley following in my footsteps.”

The constitutional monarchy of Lesotho is well-known for its extraordinary altitude. Its territory lies more than 1,000 metres above sea level and more than 80 per cent of its area is as much as 1,800 metres above sea level. Its highest point is Thabana Ntlenyana, at 3,482 metres. At 3,050 metres above sealevel, Afriski is the highest ski resort in Africa.

The weather was totally unpredictable when the race was held in October rather than December. Alfie Cox remembers 1988. “A river had burst its banks due to heavy rain. It was only 15 metres wide but it was two metres deep. There was no way you could ride through it. The only thing to do was to swim through and drag the bike behind you with one hand. Once we got to the other shore, we had to turn the bikes upside down to drain the water out of them. And then, soaked to the skin, we had to remove the air filters, clean the carburettors, dry the spark plugs. Just as well I’m a trained mechanic!”

Roof of Africa is older 1 The than the Dakar Rally

Lesotho is completely surrounded by South Africa. So no wonder that this small country is reliant on its larger neighbour. Ninety per cent of all goods are imported from South Africa and the majority of the population earns its living from its comparatively rich larger neighbour. Lesotho’s currency, the loti, is worthless in South Africa but the South African rand, by contrast, is accepted all over Lesotho. (In an agrarian country like Lesotho, there is, admittedly, a parallel currency: cattle.)

Snow isn’t a rarity. When there’s fresh snow, Baboons Pass in particular becomes nigh on impassable, unless, that is, you happen to know a German snowplough. Alfie explains, “One time in the 1990s it snowed like mad and it was piling up. I’m not exactly a giant, physically. There was no way I could have got through there on my own. But there was a huge German guy, Bert von Zitzewitz. This hulk of a man had ploughed his way up the mountain through the fresh snow and left a trail. If it wasn’t for his snowclearing abilities, no-one would have made it to the finish line that year. We’re still friends to this day!”

Majestic landscape: the Drakensberg between South Africa and Lesotho

Lesotho is the only country in the world where an item of clothing has made it onto both the national flag and car registration plates. The Basotho hat is topped off with its characteristic knot, woven from grass, designed in the shape of a mountain and is only to be found in Lesotho. Any takers for a cowboy hat making it onto the American flag?

Lesotho is rich in water... and diamonds

South Africa and Venezuela keep bickering... are the Tugela Falls in Africa taller than the Angel Falls in South America? Depending on how you measure, you get to just under 1,000 metres in various stages. The area where the Roof of Africa is run is picturesque and provides one of the most stunning backdrops a motorbike explorer could hope for. There are mountains, there’s solitude, there are lush green meadows and the ubiquitous red stones. Another type of stone altogether provides up to 10 per cent of Lesotho’s GDP. The small country is one of the world’s largest diamond producers.

A time like that will probably remain unattainable for ever for amateurs like ourselves but we can dangle it like a carrot in front of our noses as an example of what is possible, at least in theory. Your training partner in the perfect surroundings of the Playitas Resort on Fuerteventura is excellent, and approachable too. And, as one of the world’s best triathletes of recent years, he shares his secrets as part of this trip to the Canaries.

“ After morning training session, we have breakfast as we gaze out to sea” Sebastian Kienle, 35, Destination Red Bull Coach

Caleta de Fuste, famous for its sheltered beach, is a 30-minute journey from your resort

74

Sebastian Kienle is an advanced athlete. An athlete who’s happy to use the latest technologies to improve his performance: wearable computers, power meters, VR goggles and hightech legwarmers all help him to make the most efficient use of his training time. And what’s good for a man at the top of his game must surely also be good for us amateur triathletes. Don’t we all have the problem that the days are too short and the amount of time we spend at the office too long for us to actually reach the training goals we’ve set ourselves?

That’s the chief advantage of this Destination Red Bull package. You’ll only be working with professional triathletes. Before you fly, you’ll be given a heart and kidney check-up at the Athlete Performance Center in Thalgau so that your training schedules can be tailored according to those data. On Fuerteventura you’ll be met by Kienle and his team, this includes Ronnie Schildknecht, his manager, an eleven-time participant in Hawaii and Switzerland’s most successful triathlete. Fuerteventura is an excellent spot for bike-training, which is why Kienle likes to focus on it. “Playitas is made for cycling. It makes sense so early in the year – we meet in March to work on basic stamina and to incorporate exercises for increased strength on the ascent into the rides.” How might a typical day spent with you pan out? “I’d like to design the training individually, depending on group members’ strengths and at the same time make things as varied as possible. We usually start the morning with an hour of swimming or a straightforward run. Then we have a healthy breakfast overlooking the

This training camp is definitely not about you surviving a week with world-class athletes. On the contrary, Kienle will give you an
