REVIEW 2014 has been the 6th year in which the best cliff divers in the world were battling for victory. The season was action-packed and breathtaking, with seven stops all over Europe, the Caribbean and North America, in natural venues as well as in urban surroundings. More than anything, it was proven that the athletes were ready to push their limits. Everybody performed on the top of their game, providing the foundation for four competition winners, including a new face on top of the podium – former Olympian Blake Aldridge – and a gunfire of 10s in Texas. Gary Hunt put on another cliff diving masterclass with the
highest overall score in a single competition in the history of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series (526.40pts). With four victories throughout the season, Gary Hunt laid down his legacy as a four time World Series champion. The competitions in the US, Norway and Mexico were spiced up with the newly introduced Women’s World Series and the female grace of diving. After winning all three competitions, America’s Rachelle Simpson was the first woman to receive the overall winner’s trophy.

QUALIFICATION Eight dives to match technique and physical artistry in the quest for diving perfection and top scores from the judges – 17 athletes from 12 different nations had been given the opportunity to qualify for the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2015. Five spots were available for the sport’s most prestigious series of competitions and were contested in a top-class qualification competition in Cali, Colombia, on February 5 and 7. Held over two days and eight dives from 27m, only 0.20 points decided if a diver would be a permanent part of the World Series. The qualifiers had to show their full
potential and diving repertoire in front of an international judging panel of five in order to go forward to eight World Series competitions during the 2015 high diving season. The two required dives, with a limited Degree of Difficulty and two optional dives from both days, were added and the cumulative scores from all eight dives constituted the final result. The names of the top-five of the qualification have now been added to the World Series’ permanent list of 10 divers. During the season, up to four wildcards will be invited per stop – according to their performance in the qualifying.

HIGH STANDARDS From an individual’s passion, high diving has turned into a recognized sport, which draws people’s attention worldwide. “It’s getting more and more interesting for new divers to come into the Series, because it’s kind of a prestige thing, it’s the top in our sport. Just like in any other sport, there is the one event that everybody wants to participate in and win. This is what every high diver wants to win. Not because you’re on TV or in magazines, no. Everybody in this sport knows your name after you’ve won this one,” Orlando Duque explains. In 42 competitions between 2009 and 2014, the athletes have pushed the sport to such a high level that American Greg Louganis – four-time Olympic gold medallist and the most successful diver of all time – predicts an even brighter future for cliff diving: “This series standardized
the sport. The height is always between 26.5m and 28m; they have a fixed degree of difficulty and a good panel of judges. Consequently, the divers know a lot more about what to expect and therefore, can prepare better. I think it’s very possible that cliff diving becomes an Olympic sport, now that the Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) has added high diving as a professional sport. There is so much more talent coming into the sport. It’s an exciting time for cliff diving.” The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series aims to guarantee the highest possible quality in this sport, featuring the world’s best athletes as well as young talents, and, since 2014, also a Women’s World Series. It provides them with a platform to excel and express their passion over and over again.

ATHLETES As the pinnacle of cliff diving competitions, the 2015 World Series once again spotlights the sport’s elite athletes. Ten men and four women from ten countries will excel in performing at the highest level and fighting for glory, challenged not only by a series of wildcards, but also by the elements. In its seventh year, the title is decided during eight competitions for the men and three for the women.

RISKS
The highest risk of injury occurs during the landing phase, when parts of the body are already exposed to absolute deceleration and others, above the surface, are still at full speed. At this point, maximum physical tension is absolutely crucial. Immediately after hitting the water, the athlete has to actively dive away to avoid compression or contortion of parts of the body due to the hardness of the water. However, major mistakes can be ruled out because of the divers’ technical training and experience. A pancake landing from such heights can be compared to a hard landing on concrete from about 13m. This is why only about three to four dozen athletes in the entire world can engage in this elite extreme sport. Generally speaking, high diving over 28m does not gain a lot of time benefit due to the rapid acceleration; however, the risk of injuries increases disproportionately.

This April, the cliff diving elite will touch down on Colombian grounds for the very first time, when the 2015 season kicks off in Cartagena, the ‘undisputed queen of the Caribbean coast’. Stop number two takes the World Series back to its all-time favourite location – La Rochelle, France, for the fifth time in seven years. For the third stop, we take a leap over the Atlantic Ocean and return to the USA’s Lone Star State, Texas, and to the visual feast of Hell’s Gate at Possum Kingdom Lake for the second consecutive year. The two towering cliffs, rising dramatically out of the water, also provide the first platform for the 2015 Women’s World Series. Back in Europe, the series will return to the familiar waters of Copenhagen in June. From the rooftop of one of the world’s best-equipped opera houses, it will be the best high divers from all over the globe attempting to impress an audience. The phenomenal monoliths of Portugal’s Azores – also featuring a female competition for the very first time on this unique volcanic archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean – will see the athletes propelling into the water from great heights in July. August takes the cliff diving elite to new grounds in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, where an annual bridge diving competition has been a tradition for many years. The second-to-last stop is held in the very south of Italy, in Polignano a Mare, where cliffs are the foundation of everyday life, with the town itself perched on the precipice. Hosting the World Series for the third time after 2009 and 2010, the Italian fans will see the coronation of this year’s women’s champion in mid-September. The season final will take place among last season’s most enthusiastic fans, in the capital of the Basque Country. Bilbao’s La Salve Bridge will not only be the take-off strip for the last aesthetic freefalls of the year and the place for the handing over of the 2015 champion’s trophy, but it will also be the venue for the 50th competition in Red Bull Cliff Diving – with the world-famous Guggenheim Museum as a breathtaking backdrop for this huge milestone.

TAKE OFF POSITIONS & DIVE GROUPS
DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY
vv In the front group (group 1), the diver
vv Type of take off vv Number of somersaults vv Number of twists vv Position during the somersaults vv Type of entry
The divers have to choose from these five take-off positions: front, back, inward, reverse, armstand, front twisting, back twisting, reverse twisting or inward twisting. takes off facing forwards and rotates forwards vv In the back group (group 2), the diver takes off with his back to the water and rotates backwards vv In the reverse group (group 3), the diver takes off facing forwards and rotates backwards vv In the inward group (group 4), the diver takes off with his back to the water and rotates forwards vv Each one of the four groups above can also incorporate an axial twisting movement and will therefore be considered among groups 5, 6, 7 and 8 vv Any dive commencing from a hand stand is in the armstand group (group 9). The armstand can be executed from either the forward or backward direction and can also include twists
The Degree of Difficulty is the rating for dives performed in a competition and is multiplied by the sum of the judges' scores, with the highest and lowest scores discarded. The DD of a dive is evaluated on the following factors:
The DD in the World Series ranges from 3.8 for the required dives to up to 6.2 for the sport’s hardest dives. According to the official Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2015 rulebook, the jury has to judge what is seen and not what wants to be seen. Moreover, each dive has to be judged disregarding any bias towards the diver or dive to ensure an objective result.
WHAT DO THE JUDGES CONSIDER FOR THEIR SCORES?
Head judge Claudio De Miro: »At the take-off, we look at the elevation from the platform, the trajectory and the distance from the platform. The body position – pike, tuck or straight – is important during the execution; they have to be performed correctly. At the entrance, the most important things are the body alignment, the position of the arms and the splash.«
1 1
PIKE With knees straight but a tight bend at the hips
2 2
DiVE
POSITIONS STRAIGHT With no bend at the knees or hips
TUCK Body folded up into a tight ball, hands holding the shins and toes pointed
FREE Body position is optional but the legs shall be together and the toes pointed
3 POSITIONS A sequence of the above (3) positions
DiVE ELEMENTS BARANI One somersault forward rotation with a 1/2 twist. Used as an entry manoeuvre, it gives the diver the best view of the water
TWIST A twist is any movement during a dive that occurs when the diver rotates around an imaginary vertical axis that runs from the head to the toes. Up to four revolutions can be performed in competition and can be added to dives in the forward, back, reverse, inward and armstand categories
BLIND ENTRY The last time the diver sees the water is at least half a somersault before entry and so lines up “blind”
FLYING Describes dives consisting of at least one complete somersault performed in the straight position for no less than 90°. The straight position must then be followed by either tuck or pike position
2 2
2 2
DOS/ DON’TS: WHAT THE JUDGES DO NOT WANT TO SEE AND WHAT THEY REGARD AS MISTAKES: vv Powerless take-offs, incorrect distance to the platform
vv Unaesthetic execution, open or crossed legs, unpointed toes, legs that are not straight in pike or layout position or entry phase
vv Short and non-vertical entries, underor over-rotated entries
WHEN DO THE JUDGES DEDUCT POINTS FROM THEIR SCORES? vv If the arms are clearly extended above the head at the entry
vv If the arms are away from the body but below the head at the entry
vv For incomplete arm stands, as the body should come to rest in a vertical and straight alignment for no less than two full seconds before initiating the action of the dive
vv “Flying” dives should display a full 90 degree rotation upon take-off before executing the described position
vv If an obvious break of straight position
occurs after at least one complete somersault has been performed in either tuck or pike position
vv A break in position at or just before
entry, an intermediate break of position and if a dive is done in a completely different position than announced

Following a successful qualification in Australia, former US national 10m champion David Colturi became the youngest diver to appear in a full World Series in 2012. In his debut season, he went from strength to strenght. The World Series’ sunny boy, who is now based in California, set his stall out early in 2014, doing lead-ups for the famed triple quad – a dive with a Degree of Difficulty of 6.2, that only World Series champion Gary Hunt had been able to master. Inevitably, performing the complex dive in competition produced some up-and-down results, but David saved his best performance for last. The winner of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series Qualification Competition in Colombia in February 2015 first shot to prominence during the 2011 edition of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. A few days before his 22nd birthday, the Mexican wildcard landed on his tailbone during qualification in Malcesine, Italy, but showed willpower and talent the day after, when he almost made it on the podium. The now 25-year-old is one of the most technically proficient divers in cliff diving and hopes that 2015 will deliver a first World Series win. In February of 2015, Jucelino fulfilled a long-held dream, when he qualified for the World Series after finishing fifth in a two-day long qualification competition in Cali, Colombia. And now the high diver, the first male athlete to represent Brazil in the World Series, is determined to seize his chance: "Now that I took the first step, I want to do even better and make Brazil proud. I am working hard in every training session. I love to represent my country and live my passion for high diving."

An ever-present figure in the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series ever since the very first competition in May 2009, Czech Michal Navratil has established himself as one of cliff diving's most consistent athletes. Famous for his extrovert character, "Supratil" – so called because of the Superman-style dives he performed following competitions in 2009 – once again impressed in 2014, appearing in six out of seven finals, and finishing seventh overall. Missing the automatic qualification for the following year by a hair, Navratil finished third at the qualification competition in Cali, Colombia, to confirm his place in the 2015 World Series.

Cartagena COLOMBIA CONVENTION CENTER
It will be a very special moment for cliff diving legend Orlando Duque, when this year’s World Series kicks off in Colombia’s Cartagena – a huge crowd of Duque devotees is guaranteed. The location at the Convention Center, with its splendid view over the bay of Las Ánimas, provides an ideal location to launch into the seventh season. The emblematic city of Cartagena de Indias, located in the north of Colombia and each year visited by thousands of tourists from around the world who fall in love with the history of this magnificent port, is full of invaluable artistic and cultural heritage. Cartagena is a city well known for its history linked to pirates. In the 15th century, hundreds of them arrived from Europe to plunder the treasures of the colonial era, which earned the city the nickname ‘the best fortified city of the Americas’.

La Rochelle FRANCE SAINT NICOLAS TOWER
The season’s first stop on European soil is a comeback to the World Series’ all-time favourite location – La Rochelle, France. During seven years of the series, France has served as host country six times and, besides one side-step to Corsica in 2012, it was the city whose name literally translates to ‘little cliff’, that has welcomed the cliff diving elite. The divers’ last visit in 2013 saw the biggest crowd ever for a World Series event – over 70,000 spectators! And the superlatives continue, as the intimidating former defence tower of Saint Nicolas is still the most daunting venue in the entire competition. From the catacombs, the athletes have to take120 steps to the platform, looming 27m above the chilly waters of the Bay of Biscay. Andrey Ignatenko (2009), Gary Hunt (2010 and 2011) and Artem Silchenko (2013) are the former winners in La Rochelle, while Orlando Duque came back strong from an injury at the kick-off in Corsica back in 2012. When the 42m high landmark and former jail with its pentagonal layout will again be a lynchpin, it will be the first time the athletes dive into cold European waters – an additional challenge to diving acrobatically from the equivalent of an eight-story building.

From France, the World Series travels across the Atlantic, to the USA’s Lone Star State, Texas, and the visual feast of Hell’s Gate at Possum Kingdom Lake. The two towering cliffs, rising dramatically out of the Brazos River’s first water supply reservoir, also provide the first platform for the 2015 Women’s World Series. Looking back at the previous season, a red-hot final round followed a competition that saw outstanding action from 28m and included six 10s from the judges. With the highest overall score in a single competition in the history of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series (526.40pts), Gary Hunt put on another cliff diving masterclass and laid the foundation for his fourth overall victory. There were also top marks for style and poise in the first-ever Women's World Series competition, which saw seven athletes compete from a 20m platform. Rachelle Simpson, who hails from San Antonio, took first place, with German Anna Bader in second, and Texan Cesilie Carlton in third.

Copenhagen DENMARK OPERA HOUSE
From hot and dry Texas, stop 4 takes the cliff diving elite to the most northerly spot in the entire season. When mounting the 27m platform on the roof of the Copenhagen Opera House, the city provides the athletes with a panoramic view of the royal palace Amalienborg and the adjacent domed Marble Church. Located in the heart of the Danish capital, just opposite the royal palace and the shore of the harbour, the opera house is built in alignment with Amalienborg and the marble church. If one stands in the main entrance of the opera, one can see the marble church over the water through the palace. Donated to the Danish state by A.P. Møller, the co-founder of Mærsk, the world’s largest container ship and supply vessel operator, and Chastine McKinney Møller’s foundation in August 2000, the opera was designed by architect Henning Larsen and engineers Ramboll and Buro Happold, as well as theatre consultant Theatreplan. A lot of time and passion was dedicated to the acoustics and interiors, making the house one of the best equipped opera houses in the world. Construction began in June 2001 and was completed on October 1, 2004. It was opened on January 15, 2005.

SÃO MIGUEL | ISLET OF VILA FRANCA DO CAMPO
The phenomenal monoliths of Portugal’s Azores will see the athletes propelling themselves into water from great heights in July. This unique volcanic archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic serves as take-off point for breath-taking cliff dives for the fourth time in a row. However it will be the very first time that a female competition will be held on the circular-shaped Vila Franca do Campo islet offshore from São Miguel. 'Back to the roots' is the motto going into the second half of the season. Pure cliff diving directly off the cliff face, an impressive monolith of volcanic stone and the outside crater walls of the almost perfectly round islet are ideal spots to explore this pure sport. Spreading their wings diving straight from the cliff, the divers act the same way the pioneers did back in Hawaii, almost 250 years ago. Only for the more difficult and optional dives, the athletes may use a special platform construction placed above the ocean. Situated in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, almost 1,400km west of the European mainland, the Azores archipelago comprises nine islands spread over three groups. This territory symbolises the beginning of the grand adventure of discovery that began in the 15th century and led the Portuguese to have a presence in the four corners of the globe.

August takes the cliff diving elite to new grounds in Mostar, where an annual bridge diving competition has been tradition for many years. The humpback bridge in today’s design was inaugurated with a diving exhibition in 2004 and will be the venue for a World Series competition for the first time this year. Built in the 16th century, the iconic Stari Most, which means ‘old bridge’, gracefully arches over the emerald water of Neretva River, connecting two parts of the old town in Mostar. On both sides surrounded by fortified towers, it fits seamlessly into the landscape, creating an impressive sight. This single span stone bridge seems to change when looked at from different perspectives. Built by Mimar Hayruddin, disciple of the great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, legend has it that the builder never saw the bridge completed, as he left before the scaffolding was removed, having no strength to see if the bridge will stand. Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent threatened to decapitate him if the bridge falls. The bridge, together with the surrounding part of the Old City of Mostar, is on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites, and is often cited as one of the most beautiful bridges in the world.

We're back in the European Mecca of cliff diving! The second-to-last stop is held in the very south of Italy, in Polignano a Mare, where cliffs are the foundation of everyday life and the town itself is perched on the precipice. Hosting the World Series for the third time after 2009 and 2010, the Italian fans will witness the coronation of this year’s women’s champion in mid-September. Coming to Polignano a Mare means mozzarella, delicious raw fish and people of all ages fascinated by jumping into the water. An enormous crowd can be expected for the seventh stop of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in 2015. Italy probably provides the most unusual venue: the take-off spot is a private roof-top terrace and the athletes have to enter the platform 27m above the Adriatic Sea through a private living room. The house is built on the most famous cliff of the coast and looks integrated into the cliff itself. Within the international high diving scene, this spot is renowned for its uniqueness.

After tackling 23 different countries in seven years, the 50th Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series competition will happen at the grand final in the Basque city of Bilbao in late September. Located on the northern tip of the Iberian Peninsula and less than 20km south of the Bay of Biscay, the city lies within one of the most populous metropolitan areas in northern Spain. Ever since the 14th century, Bilbao has been a commercial hub and experienced heavy industrialisation that has started a social, economic and aesthetic revitalisation process by the iconic Guggenheim Museum. The diving location, the Salve Bridge, cuts through one vertex of the triangular site of the museum and will not only welcome the sailors returning from sea, but also the cliff diving elite. After the huge success of last year, Bilbao’s La Salve Bridge will not only be the take-off strip for the last aesthetic freefalls of the year and the place for the handing over of the 2015 champion’s trophy, but it will also be the venue for the 50th competition in Red Bull Cliff Diving – the Guggenheim Museum as an awesome background for this huge milestone.

* THE DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY
THE CLIFF DIVING ´ESSENTIALS´ It’d be an exaggeration to call this section ‘essential equipment’, as we’ve all learned that cliff divers don’t need more than a super-fit body, a high cliff and a stretch of water beneath them to enjoy their sport. And, of course – courage! But that’s about it and everything mentioned below is probably a means to an end, a fond habit or something that provides ease and comfort. Here's a list of things a cliff diver never leaves the house without:
SPEEDOS No matter what, when cliff divers travel, they always carry their ‘speedos’ – diving lingo for swimming trunks – in their hand luggage. In cliff diving, this is the only real piece of equipment and some of the divers even wear more than one when diving from great heights. You might be tempted to say that they wear as many as possible because they got so many, but that’s only one half the truth. The other half is that the impact on the water is so strong, that putting some extra layers of fabric between your skin and the water takes away a bit of the impact.
SHAMMY The chamois or ‘shammy’ is a small towel that serves more than one purpose. First, it keeps the diver’s body dry before a dive. This is important because the hands and legs need to be dry so they won't slip out of position in the air. At the same time, the athletes use it to keep their hands wet – in the same way that some people lick their fingertips before turning the page of a book. In case of low temperatures, the divers also use the chamois to dry their bodies and stay warm. It's also dry again as soon as you wring it out!
FLIP-FLOPS Never ask cliff divers why there are so many different kinds of shoes – they won’t have an answer. Because all they need, wear and use are flip-flops: to climb slippery rocks or ladders, walk the platform, travel and even to go out. Flip-flops, paired with the shammy, are the two things that make it to the water even before the diver himself; knotted together, they are thrown down the cliff – sometimes right on top of a scuba diver – and are immediately picked up by the athletes as soon as they surface. Never separate those besties for too long!
6 6
GOPROS An important tool to communicate with the world: take a GoPro, put it on a stick, lean over the edge of the platform and upload the shot directly onto your social media page. But not only athletes use these super-flexible and tiny cameras to take spectacular pics, they are also used by the professional moving and still images crew of the World Series, who provide people at home with some of the most fascinating and one-of-a-kind close-up shots.
SUNGLASSES One could say it’s a typical gadget for people living the desirable life of a ‘sunny boy or girl’. However, in the real life of a cliff diver, sunglasses are a necessity to give their eyes a break from the bright sunshine, allowing them to see the actual dive of their competitors in bright sunlight, hide their emotions or simply make them look even cooler!
6 6
LIFEPROOF® Protects competitors’ smartphones to ensure that they can focus on competing, knowing that their device is protected from dirt, dust, rocks and, crucially, water! JUGGLING BALLS Gary Hunt introduced juggling to the World Series. It’s his way of mental relaxation, as it completely takes your mind off of everything cliff diving-related. The perfect distraction before a high dive.
MEASURING TAPE In outdoor sports, we’re always confronted with Mother Nature and her moods. The platform is usually mounted 20m (for the women) and 27m (for the men) above the water, but only the measuring tape erases all doubts regarding the actual height. So sports director Niki Stajkovic checks the distance between platform and water each time before training and competition. TOWEL Believe it or not, cliff divers do freeze, and not just when jumping into the chilly waters of Norway, Ireland or France. Exposing your body to extreme conditions like fear, pressure and top diving performance in combination with muscle flexibility and continuing mental concentration, can wash away their energy. A warm towel right after getting out of the water is simply the easiest way to warm up and relax a bit. EXERCISE MAT Your square metre of comfort to warm up and getting your muscles and joints ready for three seconds of acrobatic freefall and hitting the water at speeds of close to 90kph. HEADPHONES A cliff diver’s best friend in the last phase of preparation. From hip-hop to hard rock to the latest hits – a cliff diver’s playlist is multifarious and long. If they want to tune out, they tune in!
It’s pure, it’s fascinating and it will takes your breath away – cliff diving continues to spread its unique spirit around the globe.

ENCYCLOPEDIA
E N CY CL O 足足 PEDIA
A–Z Did you know that… ?
ACAPULCO
In ACAPULCO, Mexico, pearl divers began to dive from the cliffs of La Quebrada in the 1930s – some more skillful than others – in order to find the biggest and most valuable pearls. Legends recall the heights from which they jumped. The figure of 36m is engraved into the top of the cliff; however, many people talk about jumps in excess of 40m. The highest level on site is actually 25.9m above sea level.
BLIND ENTRY
The last time a diver sees the water is at least half a somersault before entry, as he or she lines up ‘BLIND’.
BRAKING DISTANCE
The BRAKING DISTANCE for a high dive from 26m is approximately 4m after entry into the water.
CHAMOIS
The CHAMOIS or ‘shammy’ is a small towel that serves more than just one purpose. First, it keeps the diver’s body dry before a dive. This is important because the hands and legs need to be dry so as not to slip out of position in the air. At the same time, the athletes also use it to keep their hands wet – in the same way that some people lick their fingertips before turning the page of a book. In case of low temperatures, the divers can also use the chamois to dry their bodies to stay warm. It's also dry again as soon as you wring it out!
DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY
The DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY of a dive is evaluated based on the following factors: take-off, number of somersaults, number of twists, position during the somersaults and entry into the water.
EQUIPMENT
There is no need for EQUIPMENT. Cliff diving means athlete versus gravity, which is one of the main reasons why so many people are intrigued with the sport.
EVOLUTION
Improvement and EVOLUTION are crucial aspects of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. Besides offering jaw-dropping diving action, the World Series also intends to push the limits of high diving. Bringing together the best of their kind and providing them with a steady platform height and a set number of competitions, broke new boundaries in its very first year of existence. Gary Hunt’s triple somersault with four twists – the Triple Quad – was the first dive created exclusively for cliff diving and has a degree of difficulty of 6.2. The evolution of high diving, which began in 2009, continued in the past years, following intense off-season preparation. More jaw-dropping action is guaranteed in the 2015 season, with 27m dives into unforgiving, concrete-like water.
FEMALE COMPETITION
The first FEMALE competition in the history of Red Bull Cliff Diving was held in Malcesine, Italy, in July 2013.
7 7
In 2014, the World Series crowned the first ever female champion, American Rachelle Simpson. In its second year in 2015, the Women’s World Series will again determine its world champion during three competitions in the US, Portugal and Italy.
HEROES
FINA
IMPACT
In April 2012 the Fédération Internationale de Natation, FINA, added high diving as a professional sport. During the 15th FINA world championships 2013 in Barcelona, Orlando Duque (COL, men) and Cesilie Carlton (USA, women) were crowned world champions.
FREE FALL
During a dive from 27m, the athletes have about three seconds of FREE FALL in which they have to perform spectacular movements before plunging into the water.
G-FORCE
At the highest point, the G-FORCE value increases to five, which means that the diver experiences a force equal to five times his or her own weight.
GUINNESS WORLD RECORD
There are two GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS in cliff diving. Orlando Duque’s perfect dive during the WHDF Cliff Diving World Championship in Kaunolu, Hawaii, in 2000, when he performed a double back somersault with four twists from 24.4m. He earned a perfect 10 from all seven judges and scored 159.00 points; a number which has been noted as the highest scored dive ever. The Colombian has also participated in more world championships than any other cliff diver.
HEIGHT
7 7
High diving competitions are held at HEIGHTS ranging from 18-23m for female and 20-28m for male divers. 26.5m – the minimum height in the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series for a men’s competition – is equivalent to an eight-story building.
Outstanding achievements, broken records and unforgettable moments – cliff diving has its HEROES, like King Kahekili, Enrique Apac Rios, Lucy Wardle, Olivier Favre and, of course, Orlando Duque. The force of the IMPACT is nine times harder than from the 10m platform and can also be compared to a hard landing on concrete from 13m.
JURY
Each dive is judged by an international JURY of five. The judges consider take-off, position in the air and water entry. Their scores range from 0 to 10.
KAHEKILI
In the 1770s, none other than than KAHEKILI, the last independent king of Maui, indulged in cliff diving.
KAMEHAMEHA
In the 19th century, the Hawaiian King KAMEHAMEHA was the first to allow the organisation of cliff diving to hold contests with defined rules. Through these contests, the best and bravest athlete was determined.
KAUNOLU
Cliff diving is a very traditional discipline, that has its origin in the 1700s in KAUNOLU, on the south western part of the Hawaiian island of Lanai.
LELE KAWA
LELE KAWA is an Hawaiian expression, meaning ‘leaping feet-first from a high cliff into water without making a splash’ and was used by Kahekili, the last independent king of Maui, as an initiation rite for his warriors.
LIFEPROOF®
LIFEPROOF is the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series partner to protect competitors’ smartphones, to ensure they can focus
on competing, knowing that their device is protected from dirt, dust, rocks and crucially, water! For more information, visit www. lifeproof.com. #LiveLifeProof
LOCATIONS
Cartagena (COL), La Rochelle (FRA), Possum Kingdom Lake (USA), Copenhagen (DEN), Azores, S.Miguel (POR), Mostar (BIH), Polignano a Mare (ITA) and Bilbao (ESP) are the eight alluring LOCATIONS for the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2015.
MAXIMUM HEIGHT
The MAXIMUM HEIGHT for competitions in the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series is 28m. Due to the rapid acceleration, almost no time benefit occurs from higher dives and the risk of injury increases disproportionately.
MIND
A lot of things go through a diver’s MIND before a dive: before stepping onto the platform, they rehearse the entire process mentally. Some of them also mimic the dive, recreating it in their minds, trying to feel it. In the last seconds before the dive, the divers are completely focused and any fear vanishes.
ORIGIN
Cliff diving has its ORIGIN in the 1700s in Hawaii.
PANCAKE LANDING
A PANCAKE LANDING, or crash landing, from cliff diving heights can be compared to a hard landing on concrete from a height of 13m.
PLATFORM
The PLATFORM must be a steady take-off board, constructed with a minimum length of 1.5m, a minimum width of 0.75m and a water-sprayed rim at least 2m beyond the vertical line.
PRESSURE
As proved by the Red Bull Diagnostics and Training Centre in Austria, the mere thought of a high dive in a neutral and relaxed environment sees the heart rate and body tension rise to the same high level as experienced before the actual execution. This underlines the mental and physical PRESSURE the athletes are exposed to.
REQUIREMENTS
The main REQUIREMENTS for high divers are an extensive technical education, many years of experience in diving or a similar acrobatic sport, as well as courage, self-confidence and extraordinary physical control. It's also crucial that the athletes have the ability to make decisions within fractions of a second based on factors like sight, space, time and experience.
RISK
The highest RISK of injury occurs during the water entry, when parts of the body are already exposed to absolute deceleration and other parts are still above the surface, at top speed. Crash landings can still be ruled out, because of the divers’ technical training and experience.
SAFETY
Regulations for SAFETY are a maximum height (28m), a minimum water depth (5m), a steady and water-sprayed platform with a minimum length of 1.5m and width of 0.75m and with a rim at least 2m beyond the vertical fall line. Rescue divers, paramedics and ambulances are also on site.
SKILL Most athletes reach their maximum technical SKILL and mental maturity around the age of 30. Besides a technical education, the main prerequisite for all high divers is at least 10 to 15 years of training in diving or a similar acrobatic sport. Another necessary requirement is the ability to make split-second decisions
7 7
based on factors like sight, space, time and experience.
SOMERSAULT A SOMERSAULT is an acrobatic exercise in which a person rotates around the somersault axis, moving the feet over the head. It can be performed forwards, backwards or sideways and is an important part of each high dive.
SPEED From 27m, the SPEED at which you enter the water is between 85 and 90kph; an acceleration that compares to a Lamborghini Murciélago.
TAKE-OFF At the TAKE-OFF, the diver leaves the platform. After the take-off, the diver has about 10 to12m to perform his tricks. A good take-off almost always guarantees a good entry.
TRAINING A balanced TRAINING program includes springboard diving, flexibility and power training, as well as a good mental workout.
TRIPLE QUAD Gary Hunt’s (UK) triple somersault with four twists – the TRIPLE QUAD – was the first dive created exclusively for cliff diving and has a Degree of Difficulty of 6.2.

Consequently, UBIMET is the independent weather authority because of its innovative product ideas and high-quality services. Further information: www.ubimet.com
VERTICAL POSITION
To minimise the risk of injuries and the water splash, the water entry should be in a perfectly VERTICAL POSITION.
WATER
WATER is the central element in high diving. Characteristics like temperature, density and colour play important roles when the diver approaches the entry point.
WATER ENTRY
The most dangerous part of cliff diving is the WATER ENTRY. Even if the divers have a good line and break the water’s surface perfectly vertical, it still hurts. With their bodies under tremendous pressure, the water is like a wall; with forces nine times harder than those faced by Olympic athletes from a 10m tower.
A TWIST is one of the nine main groups in which dives are classified. Any dive incorporating an axial twisting movement falls in this group. Twists of up to four revolutions are performed in competitions and can be added to dives in the forward, back, reverse, inward and armstand categories.
