"I am going to be crucified, I'm sure" - Dominick Fernow. July 21st, 2010 We've been banging our head against the wall for months now trying to verbalize what this albums means to us and to the world we work within. We continue to find it a conundrum on every level, a Rubik's cube of sorts, that is helping us to challenge so much of how we think and feel about music, life, relationships and the business that has brought it all together. Our therapist now even has a copy. Really. Dominick Fernow has been delivering genre defining noise/experimental/electronic releases as Prurient (and via his slew of other bands/collaborations, including Cold Cave, Ash Pool and others) for nearly a decade and a half, many on his own NYC based Hospital Productions. Revered in many circles, and often loathed within them as well, he's cultivated and curated a tastemaking-ly obsessive worldwide following of like minded folks. The beautiful irony is that it is these very folks that will no doubt be most challenged by what Bermuda Drain represents. We have rarely experienced another artist who has so openly and candidly shared the drive and meaning behind something so painful and powerful. The beauty in his sharing has no limits, and the further we engage with him the more deeply we feel committed to our role in the process. In so many ways art is life, or at least art is an extension of persona. Its this very idea that continues to challenge us day after day. His intent vs our own individual interpretation…

On these nine tracks, we can clearly hear the echoes of Prurient's howling past, but are also faced with something perhaps even more unsettling - that being the territory of the unknown present and its indication of possible futures. The album, both in content and sound, is at once violent, magnetic, abrasive and emotional. The more we listen the deeper we fall into it, taking what has been provided and using it as a tool for our own self reflection. If the true idea of noise is perpetual freedom, then Bermuda Drain may well be the genre's most profoundly challenging record since Merzbow went laptop. Bermuda Drain is a boldly melodic, beat based synth record, complete with the very verse/chorus/bridge structures that the community so often defines it self by eschewing. The Prurient of today is more truly in line with the original spirit of noise than ever before. We give it two years before there is a collaboration with Trent Reznor.

LOLLAPALOOZA LIVE RELEASE DATE: 7.19.11 1. SWEET JANE 2. SENSELESSLY CRUEL 3. DIRTY BLVD. 4. WAVES OF FEAR 5. MAD 6. PARANOID KEY OF E 7. I’M WAITING FOR THE MAN 8. WALK ON THE WILD SIDE In July 2008, Lou Reed assembled a never-before featured cast of musicians into a band which essentially tore the house down at Lollapalooza. The band included Lou stalwarts Rob Wasserman on bass, Tony ‘Thunder’ Smith on drums, Mike Rathke on guitar, as well as more recent sideman like Steve Hunter (who played on Lou Reed’s ‘Berlin’), keyboardist Kevin Hearn, Ulrich Krieger on sax, and Sarth Calhoun on fingerboard continuum and processing. This historic Lou Reed set at Lollapalooza included classics like “Walk On the Wild Side” and “Sweet Jane” as well as rarely featured gems like ‘Senselessly Cruel’ and ‘Mad’. Lou’s performance also featured a 15-minute mid-set section of instrumental noise by Lou’s Metal Machine Trio, which added an extra bit of intensity to the proceedings. This special Lou Reed performance has been called one of the greatest ever at Lollapalooza.

WILEY '100% PUBLISHING' Street Date: 07/19/11 CD • BDCD180 • $14.99
Wiley is the Lord Byron of rap. It’s so obvious I’m not even going to explain it. Arugably one of the most important British musicians of the last ten years or more, this mass of every contradiction the human race can muster is also a stone-cold genius, albeit one who occasionally seems a trifle unhinged (don’t they all? Ask Byron…). Now the latest switchback move in a career defined by switchback moves is his return to Big Dada with his latest and arguably finest album.
2LP • BD180 • $19.99
“100% Publishing” is one hundred per cent written, produced, vocalled and recorded by Richard Cowie, the shadowy figure behind the Wiley persona. Well, 99.99% written, produced, vocalled and recorded by him. This being Wiley, having decided on the concept, he did sneak one guest vocallist onto the record (on the chorus to “Talk About Life”) and get his four year old daughter, Leah, to offer some sage advice to her father on “Music Not Money” (which isn’t even on your promo as he submitted the track too late for us to get it on there). It’s somehow in the nature of everything that is thrilling, exciting and also, in some ways, infuriating about Wiley that this track should completely contradict the message he puts over in his first single from the record “Numbers In Action” (and even more so in that you can’t even hear it).

What is there to tell you? This is one of the most varied musical sets Wiley has ever assembled. You could begin with the stripped back bounce of tunes like “Numbers…,” “Information Age” and “Yonge Street” (so named cos it’s the longest street in the world). You could point to the effortlessly supple grime of title track “100% Publishing” or “Boom Boom Da Na.” Depending on your mood or taste, you could highlight the avant garde genius of a tune like “I Just Woke Up,” the r&b strut of “Pink Lady,” the sweet soulfulness of “Up There” or the introspective solemnity of “Wise Man And His Words.” Throughout, Wiley spits lines which are often funny, sometimes shocking, regularly suprising but always shot through with a surreal lyrical brilliance which shows the man’s deep love of language. A genuine attempt by Wiley to embody his huge, hugely complex personality in one album, this may be a project that is, on some level, doomed to failure. But you’re not going to find a more exciting, vital, thrilling, scary, funny and crazy attempt to do just that by any other musical artist any time soon. Wiley is unique. This is all him, even if not all of him. Enjoy as much as you can take in.

Mention Fink (real name Fin Greenall) and you surprisingly get one of two reactions: head-scratching non-familiarity; or the impassioned response that prompts artists such as John Legend and Professor Green to wax lyrical about him live on air. It is a remarkable void, one which looks set to finally close upon the release of Fink’s latest studio album ‘Perfect Darkness’ on June 13th. Recorded and mixed by producer Billy Bush ‘Perfect Darkness’ is a smouldering, pulsating, and purposeful book of songs. From its emotion-rousing, self-titled opener, to the darkly cinematic ‘Fear Is Like Fire,’ and the uplifting nostalgia of album closer ‘Berlin Sunrise’, the ‘Perfect Darkness LP’ bristles with tense passion and hypnotic charm. It is in two words, bewitching and addictive. “Singer-songwriters always get criticised – fairly – for sometimes sounding like a scratched record,” says Greenall. “…moaning about this, moaning about that, girlfriend’s left you, blah blah, blah. With Fink we do sing about relationships and love and emotions – but we also sing about other stuff: embracing fear, Berlin dawns, looking forward. Perfect Darkness was written about a friend of mine who’s just signed a massive record deal and it’s all about to kick off. And I’m saying, ‘just roll with it man. It’s gonna get dark but you’ll survive and you’ll come out the other side.’ “ Following three critically-acclaimed albums, ‘Perfect Darkness’ marks the next chapter of an incredible musical journey for the Bristol-born artist. The first and pre-eminent singer-songwriter signed to legendary British label Ninja Tune after making the transition from world-clas club DJ and electronic producer Fink is also an in-demand collaborator having written for the likes of John Legend, Ximena Sarinana, Amy Winehouse and Professor Green. He has also graced some of the world’s most prestigious stages, and with bandmates Guy Whittaker on bass and Tim Thornton on drums, has toured the globe several times over. Up until now Fink has remained in the shadows, working quietly and diligently in the background, but judging by this new record he is set to emerge into the bright lights of long-deserved mass recognition.

SOLE
AND THE SKYRIDER BAND
HELLO CRUEL WORLD
FFINC027 CD/LP : SOLE AND THE SKYRIDER BAND HELLO CRUEL WORLD RELEASE DATE: JULY 19, 2011 On Hello Cruel World, Sole aka Tim Holland returns with the Skyrider Band for his first full length since the split with Anticon, and his third album with the Skyrider Band. While much was made of Sole leaving the Anticon empire he helped create, there's a refreshing, new found confidence and focus not seen since his now-classic albums Selling Live Water and Bottle of Humans. On Hello Cruel World sees Sole has assembled an army of the most exciting voices in indie culture to be apart of the new record, recruiting everyone from LILBTHEBASEDGOD, Xiu Xiu, Pictureplane, Sage Francis, Ceschi, and more, to create a pretty stunning tapestry that is a new high water mark in Sole's creative output. The album drops July 19th on cd, vinyl, and digital via Fake Four Inc., with the European release being handled by Equinox Records. Perhaps even more interesting, listeners will notice that Sole has adopted the most deliberate flow of his career--abandoning the freewheeling, hyper-timed assaults of his earlier work in favor of a biting clarity and all around accessibility. The record draws on the wealth of his newly found freedom, tapping into the positivity and ethics of a DIY tradition he has always known and embraced throughout his career - transforming his past cynicism into a call to arms and personal empowerment. The Skyrider Band itself has been similarly transformed; trading in their dense soundscapes and organic touchstones for an impeccable attention to detail and more studio-centric productions. On Sole and the Skyrider Band's last record, Plastique, Sole claimed, “I've been digging my grave since age 15.” Since then, he's been hard at work converting his grave into trenches that span from California to Barcelona, and the bottom of the ocean to the moon. Hello Cruel World occupies these trenches, steadfastly refusing to be flushed into a niche.

GENRE : PSYCHEDLIC/EXPERIMENTAL FILE UNDER: “E” Eternal Tapestry “S” Sun Araw The friendship of Eternal Tapestry and Sun Araw’s Cameron Stallones goes back to the Not Not Fun curated Neon Commune Fest, January 2007 at the much loved, and missed, Echo Curio in Eagle Rock, LA. Eternal Tapestry shared the second night’s bill with Cameron’s old band Magic Lantern (Barn Owl and Pocahaunted rounded out the night’s festivities!), and the two psych crews hit it off immediately. LA shows were played together every time Eternal Tapestry made it south. Fast forward to Austin, TX for SXSW 2010 when Eternal Tapestry shared a bizarre afternoon parking lot gig with Sun Araw. The Tapestry had a live broadcast in-studio session lined up on KVRX student radio that night, and in true Tapestry fashion they invited their buddy Cameron to join in.
The session took place in a large TV studio on the UT campus, with the band setting up in a big circle. The line-up was Dewey Mahood and Nick Bindeman on guitars, Jed Bindeman on drums, Ryan Carlile on tenor sax, Yoni Kifle on bass, and Cameron Stallones on keyboard and trademark flute. After a brief discussion of mood, the six musicians improvised together for 45 minutes continuously. The music is heard as played that evening - no overdubs, and only a few edits to create a four section suite for the LP release. The piece is titled Night Gallery, in homage to the surreal early 1970’s TV show produced by Rod Serling of Twilight Zone fame. It was this program that the six musicians fell asleep to, and woke up with, during their five day stay in Austin.

GENRE : POP/ROCK FILE UNDER: “F” Future Islands
Release Date: July 19, 2011 NO EXPORT TRACK LISTING: 2010 saw Future Islands release their critically acclaimed Thrill Jockey debut In Evening Air, along with two 12” EPs and nearly six months of touring in the US and abroad. The band perfomed instores at Amoeba in Hollywood, Reckless in Chicago, and Criminal in Atalanta. They performed on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, Seattle’s KEXP, and recently for NPR’s Tiny Desk concert series. Their video for “Tin Man” was featured on Pitchfork TV and Stereogum. 2011 will bring us a highly anticipated new album from the band set for release in September. But first the band would like to serve up two new tracks in the form of a very limited 7”. The 7” format exists for tight concept records like “Before the Bridge”, the first release of 2011 from the band. Here Future Islands serves up two addictive new tunes exploring the flip sides of love - from the hopeful first encounter to the painful final parting - each threatening to take control of your turntable once the needle hits the wax. Impassioned A-side “Before the Bridge” finds the band returning to their North Carolina roots, recorded in Elizabeth City with close collaborator Chester Endersby Gwazda (producer of the band’s most recent LP, 2010’s In Evening Air, and Dan Deacon’s Bromst). Exclusive B-side “Find Love,” recorded in Baltimore with Gwazda, is an ecstatic, dancefloor-ready jam brimming with song-of-the-summer potential. Both tracks feature live drums and additional percussion by Denny Bowen of Double Dagger. Limited to 750 hand-numbered copies, and featuring a cover-sleeve painting by DC-based artist D’Metrius Rice, “Before the Bridge” is simultaneously a must for the already converted and a perfect starter pack for new listeners.

Their music is playful but steeped in subtle detail, with both emotional heft and a pungent sense of theatricality... Drawing from a few different traditions while making them their own, Future Islands prove here to be a well-versed group of wild, woolly storytellers.” - Pitchfork (7.6) “There is an uncommon thrill in hearing a band discover and deliver a fresh approach, and this is what Future Islands achieves on the nearly perfect In Evening Air.” - PopMatters (8/10)

CARLOS FORSTER Family Trees
STREET DATE: 7/19/2011
It started out as a way of simply getting together. Old college friends, Carlos Forster and Matt Ward began looking for opportunities to connect on weekends. Scattered over several years going all the way back to 2003, Forster spent a number of weekends in the Pacific Northwest with Ward, hiking and swimming in destinations like The Columbia Gorge and Sandy River, between leisurely recording Forster's songs. No stranger to recording, Forster contributed backing vocals to Ward's debut album Duet for Guitars #2, released in 1998. More notably, he helmed the San Francisco band for Stars from the late nineties to 2002, producing three acclaimed albums for the independent label Future Farmer (also home to early M. Ward recordings). In the wake of the band’s dissolution Forster went on to study and then practice psychoanalytic theory and psychotherapy. He now works in private practice and community metal health in San Francisco. Forster made five trips up to Portland between 2003 and 2009 in which he and Ward recorded Family Trees at Mike Coykendall’s Blue Rooms studio. The songs on the record are a mix of old and new: a few Ward adored (and was likely influenced by) from their days as students at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo ("Campfire Songs" in particular), and a few written during the recording process. Friend Rachel Blumberg (who played with M Ward, Bright Eyes, The Decemberists, Mirah and Jolie Holland) stopped by to add drums. Jonathan Richman, who refused to speak after 6 p.m. -- he wrote everything down on a piece of paper and handed it to you to read—added a noodly guitar track to “If I Could Be”. When he showed up he was holding a nylon string guitar and said, “I just want to play second rhythm guitar.” Ward's laid back approach to producing and recording was welcome, though at times foreign and anxiety-inducing for Forster. Having rarely ever done less than a twelve hour day in the studio with for Stars, he was surprised when after three or four hours of recording Ward and Coykendall would call it quits for a couple hours to take a walk, get a beer, and maybe some tacos. Forster befriended Coykendall years earlier in San Francisco when he engineered much of for Stars' Windows for Stars [1999]. Forster later connected him to Ward when he moved to Portland. As a consequence, it was a kind of reunion amongst good friends. This can surely be felt in the relaxed, unhurried atmosphere of the record. Tim Mooney (American Music Club) and Forster put the finishing touches on the record, mixing it in San Francisco at Mooney's Closer Studio. A mix between Forster's lighthearted early folk songs and more recent musical movements with themes relating to loss and the difficulties of coming to terms with one's own mind, Family Trees is as influenced by his forays into Sigmund Freud and other obscure British psychoanalysts, as it is by his deep love for artist such as Brian Wilson and Randy Newman (Ward and Forster bonded over their shared obsession with the Beach Boys in college). All and all it's a fairly whimsical affair drenched in moods likely connected to the southern California sunsets Ward and Forster grew up with.

The Bye Bye Blackbirds hail from Oakland, California with former members of Yuji Oniki, Overwhelming Colorfast, Scott Miller (Game Theory/Loud Family), Kingdom County, Samiam and The Mr. T Experience. The band’s sound has best been described by power pop icon Bruce Brodeen of notlame.com as follows: “Classic 60s pop with the moody jangle of 80s New Zealand, the melodic lushness of 70s countrypolitan... borrowing equally from... 60s and 70s staples such as the Byrds, Big Star, Badfinger, and the Only Ones to 80s icons such as XTC, the Go-Betweens, and the C86 scene... along with some key 90s indie rock heroes like The Elephant Six collective, Lilys, Spoon and Beachwood Sparks.” They have also shared the stage with a wide array of bands including Mitch Easter, Title Tracks, Matt Nathanson, Music For Animals and Tommy Keene. In their latest album, they achieved a bright, clean, open, modern sound – how the band sounds live. The jangly guitar has touches of the Byrds, but is definitely more modern rock rather than 60s. This album is solid Americana like Tom Petty, with elements of Elvis Costello, Cotton Mather, and The Contrast. The songwriting is everyday romantic – about the little mysterious worlds of our close relationships. The album title, Fixed Hearts, refers to the healing of broken hearts, unchanging hearts, and also to the heart surgery the drummer had during recording.

Overview
Artist: Babe Rainbow Title: Endless Path EP
6.21.2011 WRP9317
“[Endless Path EP] features guest vocals from G-Side’s Yung Clova on ‘Greed,’ and we are going to play it on loop at all the terrifying barbecues we plan on throwing" – FADER Aptly titled, the Endless Path EP arrives propelled by the momentum of Babe Rainbow’s 2010 debut Shaved EP. That release found fans in SALEM, Gonjasufi, Lil B and Main Attraktionz amongst many others. Its dark atmospherics and minimalist bass excursions certainly inform this new material, but it’s also strongly colored by the myriad mixtapes and “chopped & screwed” projects that Babe Rainbow has unveiled in the past year. It would be a misnomer to say that Cameron Reed’s (the intrepid Vancouver producer behind Babe Rainbow) mood has lightened on his latest Warp release, but it has certainly expanded its monochrome universe. One particular touchstone is “Greed” which features a scene-stealing appearance from the charismatic Yung Clova of Huntsville, Alabama’s rising stars G-Side, who have been called the successors to Outkast’s throne atop dirty south hip-hop. “It’s All Happening” is a spectral slab of ghoulish synths and neanderthal drums and is accompanied by a disturbing video that suits its mood to a tee. “Chains” is a vaporous exchange between mountainous bass tones and manipulated, wordless voices while “Set Loose” is a propulsive, percussion-laced odyssey that began life as a track intended for rapper and full-time internet phenomenon Lil B. Part of a generation of like-minded peers like Oddfuture and The Weeknd who create online worlds around their musical output, Babe Rainbow has built his own discography of remixes (MF Doom, Midnight Juggernauts, the aforementioned The Weeknd), mixtapes and more recently, production for the likes of young rap firebrands Main Attraktionz. All of these things have clearly been built into the DNA of Endless Path and as Reed’s sound continues to evolve it will also no doubt spawn many more of these bastard children of Babe Rainbow.

RYAN DRIVER - Who’s Breathing?
FORMAT - CD LABEL - Fire Records UPC - 809236118127 CATALOG # - FIRECD181 LIST PRICE - $16.99 PACKAGING - DIGIPACK With his new album Who's Breathing?, Ryan showcases some of his new songs which, not unlike the drink that's named after him, are both eclectic and sweetly intoxicating. The first half is a top-heavy, bleary-eyed amble through the metaphysi-cal country moves made familiar through his work in The Silt. Central to these songs is Ryan's heady, almost surrealist lyr-ics, which traipse commonplace folk themes on the slant and uneven ground of a funhouse. Here his way with a turn of phrase demonstrates its dexterity amid slinking caterpillar accompaniments (including a rest stop-style pedal steel and even an English horn pilfered from the AM waves). The second half assumes the mentalist lounge approach, that particular sound not unfamiliar to those who attend the monthly Ryan Driver Quartet appearances at the Tranzac bar in Toronto. 'Prince In Blue' kicks things of with its post-punk riffs and tongue-in-cheek barbs. Potential suitors, beware: no nice boys are ever going to capture these girls' hearts. "You've been treating me just too well/ Too much pressure, I'm going to hell," they taunt, brushing unwanted attention away. 'Keep The Horse', meanwhile, flippantly recounts the tale of a divvying up of marital assets ("Charlie will be his/ Debbie will be hers") and gossiping acquaintances ("Your rent is in arrears/ And your neighbours are all ears") over a nagging helter-skelter riff that's reminiscent of fellow South American's CSS. A laid-back, cool sound that evokes a feeling of dark comfort, a reclusive stance where the world only really exists in the mind. The album draws its inspiration from both the immediate and increasingly distant past, from the point where memory slides into idealised nostalgia; The post-war cars, dark suburban streets, fields of flowers, thunderstorms and snowstorms to where one falls into play `in medias res` .More musically speaking, the keywords are gangsterjazz, experimental surf music, classic rock’n’roll and film noir soundtracks. The recordings are to a large extent unedited and unpolished. Some of the arrangements are built on extensive sketches and detailed planning, but most of them are quite basically the result of whoever was present in the studio at the given time.

Ryan Peel. “Even If” EP. Memphis native Ryan Peel melds modern pop sensibilities with an old-school soul sound. His original compositions are embedded with vocal stylings worthy of Al Green’s greatest hits, and his drumming skills are evocative of the circa-1960s Stax studio technique made famous by the legendary Al Jackson, Jr. Yet at 23, Peel is no mere revivalist – his songs are punctuated by a modern, urban slant that plays on hip-hop and southern rap. By partnering with Emmy award-winning and Grammy nominated producer and film composer, Scott Bomar (Hustle & Flow, Cyndi Lauper and The Bo-Keys), they create timeless, relevant and contemporary Memphis music.
