These are the names people think of when the Palace name arises. Well, fuck that. Thirty-one years ago this past February, Palace Brothers released a lone 7", “Ohio River Boat Song.” It was a beginning, and what’s more, it led us to present and then re-present Lost Blues and Other Songs, which compiles that diamond and 8 other singles, more or less the complexity and diversity of which represented a long strange trip for a lot of people. Adding several previously unreleased choice studio cuts and a live track from 1994 makes Lost Blues and Other Songs ever so much more so of a special buy so special, in fact, that 27 years since its original issue, its physical manifestation in vinyl form is landed on Earth with Us once again.

While it is true that this record does not include every A– and B-side, as was stated back in 1997, this is a conscious sequence for the purpose of LP flow, and to maintain the special value of those original sides. Maybe you know this already because you streamed the album and something didn’t seem right. But you listened, and relistened, oh, so many times to these songs.

And whether you liked it or not, they changed our life(s).

A note on the dedication: when the record came out, someone asserted that they were sure that “ P.G.” referred to Pussy Galore, which of course it didn’t. It referred to Paul Greenlaw, who played banjo and did the cover art for the “Ohio River Boat Song” 7" and for There Is No-One What Will Take Care of You. He was (is?) unique in his approach to, well, everything, and it was desired at the time to not give him too much to obsess over, especially with potential botherings from other people. Now it should be known!

NC MUSIC LOVE ARMY • WE ARE NOT FOR SALE

THE NC MUSIC LOVE ARMY (NCMLA) emerged in the Summer of 2013 sparked by the Moral Monday movement led by the North Carolina NAACP, forming a powerful coalition of NC-based musicians united in their stand against regressive politics in their state.

Co-founded by C AITLIN CARY and JON LINDSAY , the collective quickly grew to include more than 50 members determined to fight by means of original songs by and for the people of NC, spotlighting the moral bankruptcy of new policies from the state’s Republican supermajority. Over four years, the NCMLA issued 14 releases, becoming a soundtrack for social justice and championing the causes and candidates fighting for an inclusive body politic.

Their debut full-length album, We Are Not For Sale, captured the energy and spirit of this movement that stands the test of time. The record is primarily delivered through the lens of roots rock and folk, with songs featuring a litany of passionate vocalists trading fiery verses while tackling issues like women’s health, voter suppression, and tax policy. The songs presented here are deceptively simple in their efficacy; while weighted heavily in message, they remain catchy and musically interesting, a compelling listen from beginning to end. The album became a battle cry for NC’s Democratic party, with its anthems leading the charge in the fight to successfully quash Governor Pat McCrory’s bid for a second term in 2016. We offer it up again in 2024 as a call to arms for progressive change for a new Blue Wave of listeners and singers-along.

Recorded mostly in Raleigh, NC, with GREG ELKINS , the album was produced by Jon Lindsay and mixed by CHRIS STAMEY . The record features contributions and performances from a diverse array of artists, some who now enjoy wide acclaim.

Ben Folds Sleigher

“Christmas is constant,” says Ben Folds. “Allowing you to take stock of what’s different, to understand who you are and all the ways you’ve grown and changed.” That notion lies at the heart of Folds’ brilliantly titled new holiday collection, Sleigher. Built on an eclectic mix of originals and reimagined classics, the album examines the passage of time through the lens of Christmas, reflecting on memory, loss, and longing as it explores the variety of ways the yuletide season marks the chapters of our lives. The songs are playful here, full of humor and cheer, but they’re also laced with an inescapable sense of melancholy, a looming darkness that always seems to hover around the periphery of those late December nights. Folds’ performances, meanwhile, flirt with the standards while stretching the boundaries of tradition, at times offering up flashes of Vince Guaraldi and Burt Bacharach while still remaining true to Folds’ singularly virtuosic brand of off-kilter indie pop. The result is not so much a Ben Folds Christmas record as it is a Ben Folds record set at Christmas, a meditation on the inexorable turning of the calendar and our ever changing selves as observed at the most wonderful— and challenging—time of the year.

New West Records is proud to release Can’t Steal My Fire: The Songs of David Olney to be released July 26, 2024. This album features new versions of David Olney songs recorded by Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Willis Alan Ramsey, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Mary Gauthier, Jim Lauderdale, and Buddy Miller among others. The tracklist is also highlighted by a never-before released live recording by Townes Van Zandt

Originally from Rhode Island, Olney moved to Nashville in the early 70s and fell in with a group of songwriters including Townes Van Zandt, John Hiatt, Steve Earle, Guy Clark, and Rodney Crowell. With his rock band David Olney and the X-Rays he toured tirelessly. He went on to release a string of brilliant albums and his songs were recorded by Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Del McCoury, Linda Ronstadt, and many others. But the bright lights of stardom never shone on David, and he died the way he lived: onstage in a club, far from home, singing a song.

This album gathers some of David’s friends and colleagues to pay tribute to his unique vision. Many of these artists are legends in their own right; all are here because of their deep admiration and respect for the man and his Songs.

Interpol’s iconic sophomore album celebrates 20 years as part of Matador’s ongoing Revisionist History catalog series, released on limited edition red vinyl available exclusively to retailers. The reissue supplements a wider anniversary campaign that draws attention to Interpol’s classic, era-defining 2004 studio album through previously unreleased music, concert footage, and photos.

After 2 years of seemingly endless tours, the quartet returned in early 2004 to Peter Katis’s Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, CT to record their 2nd album. They had already debuted a handful of songs earmarked for Antics on the road: “Length of Love,” “Narc,” “C’mere.” Meanwhile, having revisited – and reinvented – the material from ‘Bright Lights’ night after night, they discovered new strengths. There was more room for experimentation in these songs, for toying with arrangements and intricacies of individual parts, than on their debut.

With ‘Antics,’ Interpol has delivered a disc even more engaging than its celebrated predecessor, without sacrificing any of the depth that has made them such an important band for so many. The songs are at once catchier and more variegated, revealing themselves over time to a degree heard on few current releases, and nothing is ever obvious. Frontman Paul Banks describes, “A lot of time, there are specific topics or events that that inspire the songs, but it’s not explicit in my lyrics.“ Indeed, with Interpol, things are rarely what they seem.

GANG OF FOUR SONGS OF THE FREE

Gang of Four was formed in Leeds in 1976 by bassist Dave Allen, drummer Hugo Burnham, guitarist Andy Gill, and singer Jon King. The band pioneered a style of music that inverted punk’s blunt and explosive energies — favoring tense rhythms, percussive guitars, and lyrics that traded in Marxist theory and situationism. They put every element of the traditional “rock band” format to question, from notions of harmony and rhythm to presentation and performance.

With this original lineup, the band released their first two hugely influential albums, ‘Entertainment’ (1979) and ‘Solid Gold’ (1981). Dave Allen departed the band, and Sara Lee joined to record their third album, ‘Songs of the Free’, where her added vocals no doubt helped propel them to a different level. The album includes “Call Me Up”, which is a live favorite, and their biggest “hit” – “I Love A Man In Uniform” which climbed the UK charts until the BBC decided to ban it during the Falklands War, presumably because it might be considered critical to the military. In the US, the song received a lot of airplay, particularly from stations that saw it as a pro-military dance song. The dancefloors saw some action too…

The album was recorded at Ridge Farm Studios in Surrey and co-produced by Jon Howlett, whose recent experiences recording bands like OMD and A Flock Of Seagulls may have helped with the album often being referred to as slightly less punk and a touch more new wave.

Matador is pleased to confirm further reissues with legendary Philadelphia ensemble Bardo Pond. Following the long-since sold out repress of ‘Amanita’ in 2021, Bardo Pond will release a remastered edition of their classic 1999 LP ‘Set and Setting’ on purple vinyl, featuring the eleven-minute opener “Walking Stick Man” and the single “This Time (So Fucked).”

Accompanying ‘Set and Setting’ is the new double LP compilation ‘Melt Away,’ cataloging late-90s rarities and outtakes from a creative apex in the band’s career, released together on vinyl for the first time. Album highlight “The Trail,” originally recorded for the ‘What’s Up Matador’ compilation, dissolves six minutes into a moment. Blink once and you’ll miss it. Blink twice and the wallpaper might start to move.

At the start of 2024 BADBADNOTGOOD were brimming with new creative energy. Having just come off a run of one-off international tour dates and a series of sessions for projects with artists Daniel Cesar, Charlotte Day Wilson, reggie, Baby Rose, and Turnstile, the Canadian-trio of Al Sow, Chester Hansen and Leland Whitty were eager to get back into the studio to simply create. The trio called on some of their closest friends and collaborators, BADBADNOTGOOD touring member Felix Fox-Pappas (keys) and a few key-players in the Toronto jazz scene including Kaelin Murphy (trumpet), Juan Carlos Medrano (percussion) and LA musician Tyler Lott (guitar), for an intensive and productive one-week of recording at Valentine Studios in Los Angeles in February 2024. The result of those sessions is the Mid Spiral series, originally released as 3 parts – Chaos, Order and Growth –digitally earlier this year and now collected altogether on a double LP and CD.

The Mid Spiral suites see BADBADNOTGOOD return to their roots of instrumental jazz while once again pushing the boundaries of how they cross pollinate genres, incorporating their love of hip-hop, neo-soul, psychedelic, funk and more. For the sessions, the trio incorporated additional musicians to add more voices of instrumentation, resulting in a deeply collaborative and expansive new sound. As the trio sifted through the weeks’ worth of material, it was clear that three distinct moods emerged, a deeper reflection of where the musicians are within their own personal lives, along with the state of the wider world: Chaos, Order and Growth.

Sun Ra's 1982 track "Nuclear War" is an intense and potent call to action against the use of nuclear weapons and the potential for their use to inflict global destruction. The track is a stark reminder of the consequences of human carelessness and ignorance and the potential for our own demise. Originally written in response to the Three Miles Island incident in Pennsylvania in 1979, close to where The Arkestra was living at the time, in Philadelphia. ‘Ayo Ke Disco’ (meaning ‘Let’s go to the disco’ in Indonesian) celebrates the musical identities emerging from the newly independent countries in South-East Asia during the 1970s and 80s.

Soundway general manager Alice Whittington, aka Norsicaa (DJ), selects 10 deep cuts from local labels, officially reissued on vinyl for the first time – forming a snapshot of the vibrant discotheques and live scenes across Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong and the Philippines.

The artists featured here were known for exploring traditional sounds alongside funk, disco, city-pop and even political psych-rock, genres that were indicative of the exciting but often turbulent period. But despite the post-war backdrop of instability there came unprecedented levels of economic prosperity. With a hopeful buzz filling the air, the music scene was helping lead the way in reshaping the new identities of the region.

From the band who invented Alt-Country, ‘Viva Lone Justice’ is the first album to be released by Lone Justice in nearly 40 years. Featuring original band members Maria McKee, Ryan Hedgecock, Marvin Etzioni and Don Heffington.

In 1983, Lone Justice started playing the clubs in Los Angeles. Word spread like wildfire. By 1984, Lone Justice was on Geffen records, and by 1985, the self-titled debut album emerged. The LA Times gave it "Album of the Year". They played shows with U2, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and Willie Nelson. By 1986, Lone Justice broke up. McKee, Hedgecock, Etzioni and Heffington would begin their solo careers….

Now, through the advent of technology, sweat and tears, a new Lone Justice album has been completed, featuring the original debut album band Maria McKee, Ryan Hedgecock, Marvin Etzioni and the late Don Heffington. Special guests include string arranger Tammy Rogers, multi-horn player David Ralicke, Greg Leisz on steel guitar and Benmont Tench on piano.

The opening track, ‘You Possess Me’, puts McKee up front and center, backed only by a string and mandolin quartet. ‘Rattlesnake Mama’ was once a thrashing electric staple in their 1983 live set - this version, however, is all acoustic with Hedgecock on rhythm auto-harp, and features Tammy Rogers on fiddle. Later, they screech through a blistering cover of ‘Teenage Kicks’ (the 1978 single by The Undertones).

It is no wonder Los Angeles was lit up by the live performances of Lone Justice. The energy continues with palpable excitement… Let word of mouth spread news of Lone Justice like wildfire once again. Let ‘Viva Lone Justice’ touch your heart and burn your barn down, too.

Young Marble Giants' "Colossal Youth" has mystified and beguiled audiences since its 1980 release. Seen by primary songwriter Stuart Moxham as "a last gasp" at making a record, Stuart insisted the one-off 7" deal offered by Rough Trade be altered to allow an entire album . . . that paid off when with a big seller which produces cover versions even from bands whose members were a decade or two away from being born on the album's release. When YMG disbanded, Stuart was at a loss; he'd never envisioned a follow-up. A series of experimental recordings made with pal Phil Legg (Essential Logic) and supported by other YMG members, musicians from This Heat and Swell Maps, old Cardiffian pals, and new friends like Vivien Goldman resulted in an album, "Embrace The Herd", as The Gist. Released just before Rough Trade made bold moves toward pop charts with Scritti Politti, The Smiths and others, the album was odd for its time, but has since taken on the lustre of genius. Years of silence followed, thereafter intermittently broken by the odd release from small labels. Stuart delved into family life, though he never stopped writing and recording. In more recent years, two retrospective compilation of lost recordings by The Gist have been released, as well as a superb collaboration with French arranger Louis Philippe, "The Devil Laughs". "Fabstract" is the final gathering of Stuart's lost recordings. Compiling long-lost YMG-era tracks with the recent brilliance of "Crow, Crow" and "Suburban Monochrome", through bits of whimsy and vastly alternate versions of fan faves, this diverse album shouldn't work . . . but it does, telling a satisfying story of an underrated talent whose mistake was following his muse, not the charts. This album precedes a new recording, years in the making, produced by Dave Trumfio, which promises to be Stuart's most complete - and original - work since "Colossal Youth".

Anthony Moore’s post-Slapp Happy output, for years an underrated-to-outright unknown quantity, achieves another dimensional plane with this third archival release from his personal tape library. Home of the Demo triangulates upon the art-pop qualities found in his previously unreleased OUT (1976, officially issued 2020) and the new wave-adjacent Flying Doesn’t Help (1979, reissued 2022), finding

Anthony’s early/mid-80s compositions drifting into the actual mainstream, just moments before it began giving way to the inevitable Next Waves. . London, circa 1978–1984! Zoom in on a small, pleasantly rundown Victorian house in Whitechapel. Just one among many in a working neighborhood, with natives and immigrants alike simply trying to get by — the synagogue and the mosque side by side. Folks who keep themselves to themselves and don’t make much fuss over some wild-eyed fellow making a ruckus in his basement most evenings. Having a hard time picturing it? Well, it actually happened, and Home of the Demo unpacks ten tracks from what we might otherwise call a lost era. Subtitled “from the dawn of bedsit recording” (and further attributed with “on the cusp of the analogue-to-digital shift, ‘78–‘84”), this collection largely represents something nearer to DIY than we’d hear from any of your fancy modern kit! As Anthony remarks in his liner notes, “We are talking about a few hundred quid’s worth of gear balanced precariously on bookshelves and table tops in bedrooms and basements.” And yet, the tracks sound right dreamy. Forty-some years on, we find them marvelously mellowed by time (and latter-day mastering). Anthony was a songwriter and musician whose first decade-plus in the music ‘business’ had brought him outside-in, through experimental/ avant projects into the pop music world he’d loved as a youngster. He was an old hand at getting sounds as well; distinctly “80s” elements that might abrade the ear instead benefit from his tactile deployment of that gear stacked up on tables and bookshelves in the basement. In this manner, he produced well-appointed, ambitiously clever songs for himself and others, such as his friend David Gilmour’s band, who used a couple pieces on Home of the Demo for their 1987 comeback album. Amidst the assiduous work of writing the Next Big One, a relaxed, almost playful mood prevails throughout the pieces assembled here — as one might imagine at home demo sessions where one man plays all the parts. It’s also true for the numbers that feature special guests, such as the ominously monikered “Page The Oracle” on lead guitar (!) — or the singer simply dubbed, “Guest” — no doubt a safe alias for a hot young Bunnyman rising to his commercial peak in those halcyon days! In the years since, Anthony’s managed to continue on in all the far-flung areas of his interest, with modern composition, improvisation and pop songs all playing an important part in his ongoing work. The unique journey of this “earthbound misfit” through the fringes of the late rock and roll era tells us much of value about the era’s secret history — perhaps not so much “secret” as too “extra” for the basic cut of the proceedings at the time. Drag City, a curious fellow-traveler along this slow-setting arc, as well as to the subsequent/current Director’s Cut era, are happy to be responsible for hawking this particular Extra. As ever, let the inconvenient truth loose!

Dean Spunt’s all-new Basic Editions is an excursion in electronic sound that instrumentally unpacks his fascination with language — in this case, the syntax of systems and processes. By turns meditative, compulsive and consumptive, Basic Editions distills a 64 voice module through a headful of ideas — somewhat like pouring a cornucopia of possible ambient moods and EZ listening impulses backwards through a funnel, inspiring a deceptively absurd rainbow of soul to spray out the other end.

With this new release, Dean IDs his process as “using sounds, rather than making sounds.” This approach to music-making is a train of thought that’s been rolling out from the far horizon of the past for ages now — but for Dean, whose previous works within and without No Age depended on their making of sounds, it’s a fresh work stance. Given, however, No Age’s traditional sonic manipulations (via loops and treatments), Basic Editions delivers further unexpected hard-rights and lefts in the non-aesthetic aesthetic that has defined Dean’s path over the past two decades. Steering toward wacked digital soundscapes that bounce colorfully across the stereo azimuth, Dean creates a kind of post-ambient neo-exotica that hinges upon a giddy conflation of cosmic and comic.

And to think that it all happened ’cause of a glimpse of an E-mu Mo’Phatt at the local online gearery! Dean was looking for a box to give him a new angle; not knowing anything about this one seemed like the right path through the next phase of his own adventure. This “urban dance synth” was made great use of in hip-hop productions around the turn of the millennium. There’s lots more to know about the machines of that time — choose your own rabbit hole — but the takeaway here is that it generates a finite amount of very circa-2000 sounds and he got it for fifty bucks. Inspired, Dean spent a minute getting its basic capacities in hand, while acquiring a few other boxes with compatible cards (more sounds!). Then he was rolling — doing gigs with his Mo’Phatt and a midi-keyboard while recording more involved collages at home.

In one way of thinking, Basic Editions is the sound of Dean not being influenced by anything — how could he be? The sounds were all preset! There is, however, an instinctiveness to pushing a closed system in a curatorial manner, and it’s here that Dean’s inclinations took the wheel of the proceedings, bending the farmed sounds in and out of color and shape, creating improbable constructions whose gears clash together and revolve with an odd combination of nerviness and chill. It’s all RIYL: Moebius, Nuno Canavarro, General Magic & Pita, Carl Stone, Jon Hassell.

Further refinements are provided with the artwork, which reprocesses generic graphic information sourced from various modules, while the album title tips its cap to a fine rank-and-file clothing line offered at K-Mart. Singer/Songwriter Juliet Lawson’s album, ‘Boo’, was released on the Sovereign label in the UK in 1972. The album was the confident debut of a young British artist and featured twelve of Lawson’s own compositions.

In the same wave of early 1970s English singer-songwriters such as Nick Drake, Vashti Bunyan, Christine McVie and despite being described at the time as ‘Britain’s answer to Joni Mitchell’ ‘Boo’ was to prove her only major label release with limited commercial success.

Over the next 50 years the album’s reputation has slowly grown and is today an expensive and collectible item. ‘Boo’ is presented here in its entirety.

The first pressing of the vinyl edition of the album also come with a bonus 7-inch single featuring two early demo tracks produced by ex-Yardbirds founder Paul Samwell-Smith, who also produced Carly Simon and Cat Stevens.

Heated Garage is a sonic snapshot of what happened when boundless musical energy and middle American moxie combined to create a cultural phenomenon. Most of the music on 90 comes from the 2-track Revox tapes (1968 – 80). Working with his Echolette tape delay and Farfisa organ—the equipment on which Achim recorded his beloved Selbstportrait records and much of the seminal work with Dieter Moebius and Michael Rother—the Revox tapes document the processes and sounds that continue to inspire generations of music lovers and sonic adventurers.

90 is in no way intended as the exhaustive retrospective of the oeuvre of an important artist. The actual chronology of these pieces, and in some cases who might have collaborated with Achim on them, remain a mystery. But the historical context of this music is undeniably compelling—it doesn’t feel like hyperbole to suggest that these cascading, hypnotic cycles equal the best of contemporaries like Terry Riley, working half a world away on their own minimal masterpieces.

For now, a celebration is sufficient—the portrait of an extraordinary life at 90, narrated in beautiful, intimate, innovative music.

With Book 3, The Chronicles of Father Robin reach the final chapter of “The Songs & Tales of Airoea”. This dynamic and soulful journey starts with the upbeat “Magical Chronicle”, a vocal driven track full of lush harmonies and clear references to prog classics such as Gentle Giant, Yezda Urfa and the Canterbury Scene. From the atmospheric “Skyslumber” and the soaring prog ballad that Yes never wrote, “Cloudship”, the album burst into the dynamic psych-rocker “Empress of the Sun”, a song full of energy and contrast eventually sliding into a keyboard lead middle part reminiscent of The Doors at their most adventurous. Featuring members from some of the most revered progressive rock bands from Norway, Wobbler, Jordsjø, Tusmørke and seasoned post-rockers The Samuel Jackson Five, TCOFR is a veritable all-star team. “The Songs & Tales of Airoea”, 30 years in the making, is a cohesive triple concept album with 18 songs set in an alternate archaic world for over a period of three decades. The first album, “Book I”, was released on September 15th, and “Book II” will be out December 08th.

The Chronicles of Father Robin (TCOFR) emerged from the remains of the band Fangorn back in 1993- 94, mainly inspired by the classic bands and albums of the early 1970s progressive music scene, alongside contemporary bands like Änglagård, Anekdoten, White Willow and Landberk.

This recording consists of music intensely devoted to the exploration of dichotomy as a type of musical interaction, where even a unison can be dichotomous. Dichotomy as an incomplete responsorium, or a bipolar monologue. Here, they present this duo of improvisation. This music is often dense, fearlessly virtuosic, it has a vocation to be rough but can’t help being meticulously articulate at the same time. It can’t be devoid of a mood, of course, but it has no interest in being more than just one thing. The first and the last tracks are different, they transport the listener in and out of a place: the other tracks are that place. “Between the conception and the creation, between the emotion and the response falls the shadow” (T.S. Eliot).

Akin to bringing a personal journal to life, William Harries Graham threads vivid and vibrant memories and moments into the fabric of his music. Against a mosaic of dusty Americana, energetic rock ‘n’ roll, and eloquent folk, the Texas-born singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist tells the kind of stories typically reserved for classic dogeared novels and timeless flicks.

Growing up in Austin, William intuitively gravitated to music. Mom worked as a professor, while dad Jon Dee Graham gained renown as a respected independent musician and performer himself. As such, William spent countless hours watching his father either playing or recording. He went from messing around with dad’s guitars to receiving a guitar of his own at twelve-years-old. “That’s when I started taking it really seriously,” he recalls.

Thus far, he’s consistently proven himself on stage, remained prolific in the studio, and built an audience one fan at a time. Now, he welcomes everyone into his world on his fourth full-length offering and debut LP for Strolling Bones Records, Annie’s House.

Following on from their many mutual remixes and first collaborative EP “Pleamar” (Wonderwheel Recordings 2020) Chancha Via Circuito y El Búho return with a new EP “Tenalach" which sees the duo enter new territories and soundscapes. This mysterious, atmospheric and melancholicEPislikethesoundtracktoavideogamethattakesplacein a strange and wonderful parallel universe. Imagine Zelda set in the junglesandmountainsofLatinAmerica.

While the BPM may have risen, this is neither ‘downtempo’ nor ‘umtempo’andanEPthatcannoteasilybepigeon-holed-itisfreshand original. It also reflects a darker side to the pair’s music, a sub-conscious reflection of a changing world, holding in each song a constant tension andthedesiretoescapetonewrealitieswheretheconnectionbetween humansandnatureisblurredandequal.

Shika Shika is a label for music without borders. The label was founded in 2015 between Berlin, Mexico City, Buenos Aires and Paris to give a platform to emerging artsts from around the world, focussing on artists exploring global folk roots, organic sounds and electronica. Since then, the label has released music from over 90 artists from 30 countries, including 36 digital and +15 vinyl releases. Chancha Via Circuito & El Búho Tenalach

Bounds follows Craven Faults’ second full-length album Standers. Following loosely in the footsteps of 2020’s Enclosures release, here’s another 37-minute journey through Northern England via a lifetime obsessing at the fringes of popular culture. New details and perspectives. Dusk gathering.

There’s some discussion over where this journey begins. Certainly, less than twenty miles north-west of the city, but possibly much closer. Ironic given we’re searching for a distance marker. A gritstone pillar is the prime candidate - destroyed by lightning almost 200 years ago, and then rebuilt a quarter of a mile away. A curiosity. Many a journey starts here these days, as we take flight and head further north and west. The tarn was drained in 1940 to protect critical infrastructure. We leave the sounds of heavy industry behind us to float weightlessly over the moors.

We pick up pace and hit those levels of repetition engineered to the highest standards in Düsseldorf and Köln, 1971. A gift to the world. At this point the altitude is no longer clear; there’s no sense of scale. We could be a matter of inches from the ground, but the patterns are the same. Eventually we arrive at a hillside with no defined boundaries. The limestone pavement is visible in parts, and snaps us into focus once again.

It’s a little way east for our next stop, very close to where the journey began on Standers. Documents from 1651 suggest an arbitrary drawing of boundaries, the distribution of power and wealth set down in pen and ink and then passed down through generations. We beat a path around the perimeter. The divides still exist although the crab apple tree is long gone. Melodies give way to bent notes and dissonance.

We take a circuitous trip to Hamburg and Rome for filming between February 11 and April 23, 1972. A slower pace. Less structure, but emotive, evolving. The master touch, indeed. One final job before retiring and living off the land for the next 373 years.

Multi-instrumentalist and synth wizard Paul White readies his third album for R&S Records, offering up a cinematic journey on ‘Peace In Chaos’ that captures the current mood with its shadowy electronic prowess.

With an unabashed love of 80s synth music and film scores, the South London based producer presents an album of perhaps his most pop leaning tracks yet, following on from 2018’s ‘Rejuvenate’ and 2014’s ‘Shaker Notes’. Across eleven tracks, White delves into a world of esoteric electronic pop, as waves of melodic synths wash over towering drum patterns and majestic bass, with White adding his own enigmatic vocals to many of the productions.

Five years since her debut album Delivery, Mikaela Davis has moved away from her hometown of Rochester, shared the stage with the likes of Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Christian McBride, Bon Iver, Lake Street Dive and Circles Around the Sun and entered a new decade. But it’s the ever-evolving relationships between her closest friends and bandmates that has propelled the Hudson Valley-based artist onto her latest album And Southern Star––a truly collaborative effort that ruminates on the choices we make, and the people we always come back to.

The band, made up of Davis (harp/vocals), Alex Coté (drums), Cian McCarthy (guitars/vocals), Shane McCarthy (bass/vocals) and Kurt Johnson (steel guitar), have been playing together for over a decade and it’s the first time they’ve appeared on a full length record together. Weaving 60s pop-soaked melodies, psychedelia and driving folk rock, And Southern Star picks apart the reflection we used to recognise, while trying to build a new one. It navigates the periphery of past selves, the coexistence of isolation and excitement in a new environment and the tension of growing away from what we thought we wanted, tackling it with a luscious, kaleidoscopic grace. “I finally feel like this album is more me than anything else that’s been released,” Davis says, adding that producing the album along with her four bandmates allowed them to carve out their own ideas, rather than someone else’s. The renaissance of Peter Perrett, whose new album The Cleansing is his third for Domino since going solo, is not only heartwarming and extraordinary given his long-term history of addiction and associated vanishing acts, but a timely reminder of one of most singular songwriters, vocalists and characters that the UK has ever produced.

All necessary proof is contained in ‘Another Girl, Another Planet’, which Allmusic described as, “Arguably, the greatest rock single ever recorded.” It’s at the very least a quintessential new wave anthem, released in 1978 and subsequently covered by R.E.M, The Replacements, Belle & Sebastian, The Lightning Seeds and Blink 182 but originally recorded by The Only Ones , who Perrett spearheaded through three albums of quicksilver rockers and languid ballads before imploding in a mess of drugs and exhaustion in 1981.

Perrett’s first band England’s Glory had been an underrated vehicle for his Bob Dylan, Lou Reed and Syd Barrett fixations before he truly came into his own with The Only Ones, dissecting love, lust and obsession with disarming honesty in his lyrics and press interviews – an uncompromising stance that continues to this day – including the depth of his drug-taking. Post-Only Ones, Perrett took time out to be with his baby sons Jamie and Peter Jr, but soon heroin took over his life. He finally reemerged in 1994 with The One, a short-lived attempt to recreate former glories with a younger crew. 2007’s seemingly improbable Only Ones reunion (at the behest of that year’s All Tomorrow’s Parties festival curator Warren Ellis) lasted longer, but no new album was forthcoming.

Against the odds yet again, with Perrett finally addiction-free and a band containing his sons Jamie on guitar and Peter Jr on bass, he started playing under his own name. His first album in almost 20 years was How The West Was Won, released in 2017. “Perrett has pulled off something genuinely remarkable here,” said The Guardian. “If How the West Was Won does turn out to be one last defiant breath, then it’s an astonishing twist to his story.”

The album wasn’t Perrett’s defiant last, as Humanworld followed in 2019. The album, The Guardian noted this time, “isn’t just good by the standards of albums made by people who spent years on hard drugs, or by the standards of late career revivals: it’s simply a very good album indeed.”

The Cleansing, an epic 20-song set, doubles down on this excellence, Perrett’s voice and songwriting miraculously intact five decades after 'Another Girl, Another Planet' launched him skyward.

“This music is more for the creatures than for the humans” - Songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Sam Blasucci.

Having spent the last 10 years tinkering with his songwriting through his extensive catalog with folk/rock group Mapache, as well as his debut solo album ‘Off My Stars’, Sam works alongside co-producer Johnny Payne for his follow up sophomore solo album ‘Real Life Thing’ via Calico Discos. Sam & Johnny take a leap from everything they have done in the past into brand new territory for this collection of songs. Sam connects new dots and bends genres with unheard style and instrumentation on songs like ‘Death’, with words adding to the conversation of gender and sexuality. The occult-dancer lead single ‘Witching Hour’ pulses with feeling through a high energy chorus built around a beautiful and bold middle section of just percussion and vocals. In addition to new pathways, homage is also paid to Sam’s first loves of music through the notable Motown feel of the existential soul tune ‘Flower’, as well as the vintage pop gleam of ‘No Magic’. These songs are two examples of the recurring lyrical themes of life and death on this record. “Something clicked before I wrote these songs that put me in a place of wonder and confusion and bliss that I had never experienced before.” Some of the lyrics found on this record have been previously released in Sam’s debut book of poetry ‘Guidelines For Dying’, which quickly sold out of its first print.

While remaining quite elusive to genre or category, a few of Blasucci’s deepest influences can still be spotted throughout the musical and lyrical shape of his new album. New literary and musical discoveries seem to be constant for Sam, but shades of Leonard Cohen, Prince, and Bjork peak out behind this batch of songs as well as the writings of Ariana Reines, John O’Donohue, and Edgar Allen Poe. Sam notes that the many influences around him became heavier and more vibrant after falling extremely ill for two years between 2020 and 2022. “Gaining back my ability to be active, to travel, to live - it was all very much a rebirth in so many ways. Things emerged sharper and clearer from that period of my life”. Sam is healthy

and moving forward at a seemingly fast pace with this new album and the accompanying conceptual concert film of the same name.

The film - directed by Sam and produced/shot by Bryce Makela - brings these influences and songs into a literal Real Life Thing through their collaborative visions and physical representations of the album. Filmed at the same studio where the album was recorded - Carbonite Sound in Ojai, CA - the film runs like a type of musical play. The album is performed live with stage hands and different set changes to accentuate each mood throughout the record - certainly Sam’s most ambitious project to date.

Sam was born in Los Angeles in November 1994 and currently lives in Ojai, CA. Having had residence in Los Angeles, CA / Coahuila, MX / Orem, UT & New Orleans, LA - it’s safe to assume Sam will be on the move again soon and with more fresh energy to give of himself through his art. Determined to live by creation, Sam is the type of artist that is always creating something, maintaining a sort of inexhaustible hunger to make his music.
