KIM DEAL Nobody Loves You More
Nobody Loves You More is Kim Deal’s debut album, although it’s technically not her first release under her own name – she selfreleased a 5-part, 10-song 7” vinyl series in 2013, and beyond that, she’s earned her stripes as early as the late 80s with bands Pixies and The Breeders. The long-awaited record’s creation began with its oldest songs, “Are You Mine?” and “Wish I Was,” which were written and originally recorded in 2011 and included in said vinyl series, shortly after Deal concluded Pixies’ ‘Lost Cities Tour’ and relocated to L.A. In the years since, the record took shape in pieces, coming to light with a variety of collaborators, including Breeders past and present (Mando Lopez, Kelley Deal, Jim Macpherson, and Britt Walford), as well as new friends like Jack Lawrence (The Greenhorns) and Savages’ Fay Milton and Ayse Hassan. Tracked over the last several years, the record’s last recording was helmed by iconic engineer and Deal’s close friend Steve Albini, tracking “A Good Time Pushed” with Jim and Kelley in November 2022.
Sonically versatile and propulsively infectious, the resulting record is a celebration of Deal’s unmatched artistry, nodding not only to her career highlights with celebrated bands across the alternative landscape, but also to her immovable cultural weight, including her impact on current young musicians such Olivia Rodrigo (who even invited Deal and The Breeders to support her on Guts World Tour this year). At one of her sold-out Madison Square Garden dates with the band, Rodrigo told the crowd that she remembers her life in two parts: before she heard their song ‘Cannonball,’ and after. “I thought Kim was the coolest girl in the world,” Rodrigo said. “I’m very inspired by them and everything they stand for. They are absolutely iconic.”
Outside of enduring praise from the likes of Rodrigo and other persisting fans, Nobody Loves You More, Deal’s first individual entry into her musical canon, will only cement her legacy even further and hopefully crystallize the free-wielding, creatively daring spirit she’s been fostering since her very first appearance.

ADRIANNE LENKER
Once A Bunch / Who Can Say
Earlier this year, Adrianne Lenker released her beloved new album Bright Future via 4AD. Praised as “characteristically brutal and brave” (Rolling Stone) and “a genuine competitor for the best album she’s ever been involved with,” (Paste), Bright Future has already appeared on many mid-year Best-Of lists, including The New York Times, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, SPIN, Brooklyn Vegan, and many more.
Now Lenker shares new single “Once a Bunch” as a limited edition 7” with an exclusive b-side, specifically for the independent retailers who have so fervently supported her catalog. Recorded during the Bright Future sessions and originally only appearing on the Japanese CD release of the album, the sweet, country-tinged single – already a live favorite – sees its physical release for the first time.

DEAN & BRITTA & SONIC BOOM
A PEACE OF US
In a season where we all seek comfort, tradition, and a return to a home of sorts, a trio composed of indie music’s foundational members have gifted us A Peace of Us —— an album of diverse holiday tunes filtered through their musical imaginations. Dean & Britta, well-known from their work defining a genre with Galaxie 500 and Luna, join Spacemen 3’s Sonic Boom, another bastion of indie’s collective adolescence, to bring to life a collection that draws from early ‘60s pop, garage, country, James Bond soundtracks, Christmas carols, and electronica. Dean Wareham recalls a sentiment from his DJ friend Chris: “You can experience all the emotions of Christmas through music: love and hate, joy and heartache, nostalgia, regret, anticipation, and frustration.”
DEAN & BRITTA & SONIC BOOM
A PEACE OF US CAK178
Street Date: November 22, 2024
File Under: Indie / Holiday
Their venture into a holiday album was organic, spurred by a few cover tunes over the years, a Christmas special during the pandemic, and finally collaborative sessions between Dean & Britta in L.A. and Sonic Boom in Portugal. The trio all contributed vocals, with guitars by Wareham, bass and keyboards by Phillips, effects, and mixes by Sonic. The result is an album of exploration as well as comfort, “like Bing Crosby...on acid,” Britta adds, the tracklist a reminder that the holidays are complex and tragicomic.
As is often the case with holiday merriment, the album has a soft undertone of the bittersweet. Wareham sings one of David Berman’s final songs, “Snow is Falling in Manhattan,” one Dean believes is “destined to be a holiday classic.” Its lyrics foreshadow Berman’s tragic death: “Songs build little rooms in time / and housed within the song’s design / is the ghost the host has left behind.”
The Christmas blues surface again with Willie Nelson’s “Pretty Paper,” rendered here as a duet between Britta and Sonic Boom, their pulsing synth-heavy production updating the song for a darkened nightclub rather than a bright honky tonk. This collection steers clear of the usual Christmas chestnuts, but fans of classic indie haze may find a new favorite in “Peace on Earth / Little Drummer Boy” (created for Bing Crosby and David Bowie’s 1977 TV duet). Wareham notes that “Our favorite version is the German one by Marlene Dietrich, so that was our jumping-off point.” All three sing this one together: Wareham’s tenor, then Sonic Boom’s thrumming baritone, and finally Phillips’ soothing contralto making the plea for peace.
If collaboration is the fuel, peace and mutual understanding is surely the fire, and A Peace of Us has us gathered around it. “Christmas is mostly for children anyway,” says Dean. Sonic adds, “Or the inner child in all of us. Goodwill to all men. Hopes and fears for the year to come. And light in the darkness. Where this festival began.”

OVERVIEW
Originally released in 2017, PHANTOM BRICKWORKS is an ongoing ambient/drone project by Stephen James Wilkinson a.k.a. Bibio. The work explores the human echoes still present in various sites around Britain. Wilkinson has visited these locations, observed their gradual decline, and responded with improvised and composed music. New in 2024, a sequel titled PHANTOM BRICKWORKS (LP II) is a 10-track LP, mastered by Guy Davie and vinyl cut by Hendrik Pauler. The new record draws attention to new sites - some are intriguing, vast scars on the natural landscape, others survive only in local memories, historic clips and photographs. A few remain submerged from ordinary sights, while some exist purely as legends and stories.

: Honey Dijon
Fashion icon, catwalker, curator, historian, commentator, activist, Grammy winner and – damn right – DJ, there ain’t much these days that Ms. Honey Dijon doesn’t do with aplomb Most of her achievements thus far came via her passion for clubbing and the art of DJing, from those early Chicago parties to her role as a de facto ambassador for world dancefloors.
Chatting to Honey for a few minutes, you swiftly realise when it comes to records, labels, releases, she’s a house music nerd, having been schooled by some of the Windy City’s masters and is as adept at bringing the past into the future as anyone else in the business This compilation is a testament to someone whose knowledge of the underground labels of yore is encyclopaedic and Ms Dijon has dredged the recesses of her clubbing memories. ’I’m a huge fan of research. So putting this compilation together was basically going into my dancefloor experience and finding gems I wanted to present to people that they may not have been familiar with or that they didn’t even know existed ’ Thus we have Psychedelic Research Lab’s anthemic NY banger ‘Keep On Climbing’, which came out on producer Scott Richmond’s own store label, Satellite, or Sir Lord Comixx’s London vibes on the aptly-named ‘Soul House’ which, says Honey, ‘I heard Danny play it at 7am in Twilo and it was so fuckin’ weird’. Kingsley O, the London boy marooned in Connecticut, contributes the Jersey vibes on Maydie Myles’ brilliant debut single, ‘Keep On Luvin’, reinforced by Blaze associate Cassio The Cassmaster’s ‘Getting Hot’
This compilation is a pan-global, multi-era waltz through house music’s storied past Repping Chicago, there’s Dance Mania’s Dance Kings, Blackjoy and Art Of Tones carrying the flag for Paris and even Shaboom’s Blackpool gets a nod. Some of these are forgotten classics, some are dollar bin finds, and there’s also a brand new Dijon track, sprinkled with her usual mustard-hot flourishes and lightly seasoned with some more recent efforts by Waajeed and Kiko Navarro. This can be consumed on a dancefloor, in the back of a cab or relaxing at home with a glass of something cold (or, if you must, hot)

Fronted by the late Dex Romweber, the duo’s fourth album was the first album of all original material. Produced by Caleb Southern, White Trees is a Flat Duo Jets’ masterpiece that proved that Romweber could diversify his band’s material without losing his recklessness and urgency.
“The fourth album by North Carolina’s Jets is a tarnished neorockabilly gem. Dexter Romweber’s battered honk is the perfect voice to wrap around these twisted tales about Charlie Dick (Patsy Cline’s hubby), UFOs, and dining with Van Gogh. It’s as if the ”Eraserhead” soundtrack were recorded at Sun Studios and sent to Weekly World News for editing.”- Entertainment Weekly
“Arguably the busy Duo’s most accomplished set, ‘93s handily diversified White Trees jumbled stylistically antiquated originals in a cohesively dignified manner.” -Beermelodies

“This one to me is a time capsule more than most any of my recordings. All music is a time trapped in time that preaches timelessness -– preaching either convincingly or not. But with a radio session such as this, there is a different aspect. It’s all live, all first take, no overdubs. Also I think having the BBC engineers at the controls, with their own aesthetic, not one I am bringing to the studio, that makes it more encapsulated -- “remember that day we did that?” The circumstances and the memory of the smell of the studio makes it stand out. So it’s more of a performance maybe than a usual recording, because the audience (engineer and producer) were foreign to us. British, milk in tea. So we gave them something to show them who WE were -– Dale Coopers with our black coffees.
Somebody said this EP is very Twin Peaksy. Not in a Badalamenti, torch-song way –- a deeper connection. I can see that.
“Beautiful Child” has been turned into a minor key song because, well, it really should have been one in the first place! “Cold Discovery” was a live staple then and some nights it could really catch fire. We got a pretty good one for BBC. “Dirty Pants” here is probably better than the LP version. And then there’s “Jesus”. Sweet, sweet “Jesus”. Here sounding like a deathbed plea shot through with visitations from the angel of mercy.”

PAPA M BALLADS OF HARRY HOUDINI
The “Great Escape Artist” is back – no, not THAT one – dude’s dead! We’re talking about Papa M. And HE’s talking ’bout Harry Houdini – at least in the title of this record, anyway.
Yes, once again, after a gap of YEARS, Papa M just rolls up and shows us how it’s done. This time, with a fresh, fine and fat-assed set of songs. And just SIX of ’em! So you know they’re some groovers.
Sometimes you never know when it comes to Papa M and his ol’ left-shoulder angel (or is it right? We forget.), David Christian Pajo. After Slint’s disbandment, he whiled away the 90s playing with literally everybody who asked, pausing long enough here and there to start his own band, called M. One literally awesome single later, he tells us, “I have an album, but now I’m gonna call the band Aerial M.” Alright, okay...it’s early days yet – go for it! One insanely great album and an (also amazing, goddamn!) remix album later, he’s like, “The next record is gonna be credited to Papa M.” And there we were with a thousand promotional Aerial M beer mats ready to go – fuck! Ah, we used ’em to shim wobbly table legs and such, and gave the world the Papa M they deserved.
Two epic/classic albums and a forbiddingly large outstretched palm of singles (eventually collected into another epic full-length) later, David was looking a bit green around the gills. It’d been five years of Papa-ing off; time to do something/ anything else for awhile. Okay, fine. Let us know. And twelve long years go by before he sends in Highway Songs. Nearly did the label in! We put that out with the quickness in 2016, then A Broke Moon Rises in 2018. Seemed like things were looking up! And nothing. Until last week, when we got Ballads of Harry Houdini, with a request to “rush release.”
Do you get it now, why we call him the “Great Escape Artist”?
Because when he’s not escaping out, he’s escaping in. Following the path of M records from Aerial to Papa, (the just-released The Peel Sessions excepted!) David recorded Ballads of Harry Houdini on his own, receding deep inside himself and taking the time for ideas new and old, from soup to nuts, et al. Having his fun before spitting it all out onto the world – setting down some tracks, getting lit, grabbing a guitar, getting a sound going, and soloing over ’em! With a bit of singing here and there too. Sounds kinda like gasping for breath sometimes, but we know Papa M better than that. Everything that’s meant to be in the picture is in there. The shit that isn’t, int’t. Frankly, the amount of hip-shaking sleaze oozing out of these pieces blows the idea that these are simple ad-hoc assemblies right the FUNK out of the water. Sure, when David does blues scaling, he sounds a little like Billy “I’m Just a Fool for Your Stockings” Gibbons. But then there’s the insistent torn-n-fucked delirium that’s accompanied EVERY Papa M expression into the marketplace (with pride) since 1999. As ever, it’s mixed extra-crispy, with earworms and easter eggs and lots of other surprising shit (like – spoiler alert – sweet peach colored vinyl!) that’s bound to change your whole personality.
And so it is and so it does. Ballads of Harry Houdini: it can make you dance, sing or anything. And you know what? DO try this at home. It’s dangerous, but how could it not be worth the effort? Or are you still living under the assumption that you might just live forever? Fuck that

“we will be wherever the fires are lit is sort of a sequel to Stateless. These songs come from crevasses of sometimes longer improvisations or short ones . . . there are no rules, I am still learning how to do this.
Making music in these dark times feels meaningless but it is what we do, small anthems to muddle through. I recorded these songs alone in my little shed as I have always done, it’s all improvised. Finding some sort of solace in ringing clatters and broken harmonics through an old guitar, strumming in opposition to the towers.”

No Export To UK, EU, Australia, NZ— Send Everywhere Else The Fires Are Lit!
Four years separate the release of Stateless and we will be wherever the fires are lit. In the interim, Tashi Dorji has seldom stood still, playing and touring almost constantly, continuing to record both as a solo and in collaboration with artists including Susie Ibarra , Alex Zhang Hungtai, Bill Orcutt , Michael Zerang , Elliott Sharp, Audrey Chen, Sally Gates, Marshall Trammell, Efrim Manuel Menuck , Aaron Turner, Dave Rempis and Joe McPhee. For Tashi, the playing of this music is always political even in its most abstract iterations. In and of itself, music can’t solve political problems but since no moment of life is without its political context, “strumming in opposition to the towers” is therefore a universal state, a freedom of expression made while doing all the other things involved with playing, maintaining a sense of lineage and documenting forward movement. we will be wherever the fires are lit was recorded over a period of a month on a Zoom recorder in a cabin behind Tashi ’s home. His music, as ever, is all improvised, using different guitar preparations tape for muting, and metal for buzz. Different tunings and techniques; inspirations from all over. Tashi ’s sound is his own, but we can’t help but feel the sound of many nations, in all hemispheres, storming through these acoustic expressions. Who else would it be for, if not for everyone?

THE MORMON TABERNACLE CHOIR: Sings Christmas Carols
(Expanded Edition)
STREET DATE: NOVEMBER 22, 2024
We have a tradition here at Real Gone Music of releasing Christmas albums on CD every holiday season, and this year we are releasing a record that started a tradition of its own. For nearly 70 years, The Mormon Tabernacle Choir–today known as The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square–has provided the soundtrack of Christmas. The 360-person, all-volunteer choir’s lush and majestic sound is one of the most distinctive in American popular song, and that’s in no small part due to the group’s legacy of Christmas albums. That legacy, which is still going strong today, began in 1957 with the Columbia Masterworks release of The Mormon Tabernacle Choir Sings Christmas Carols. Though the Choir made its first recordings in 1910, Christmas Carols was their first seasonal set, and quickly became a beloved perennial in the Columbia catalog. Eight years later, with stereo sound having all but taken over, the album was re-recorded, and the original disappeared…until now! Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records are proud to celebrate the season with the first-ever authorized reissue of The Mormon Tabernacle Choir Sings Christmas Carols in all its gorgeous mono splendor. Christmas music has never sounded so stirring and inspirational as on this set of fifteen classic carols and hymns. We’ve added four rare period bonus tracks (in stereo) to this essential package. It’s all been newly remastered from the original tapes by Mike Milchner at SonicVision, and The Second Disc’s Joe Marchese has penned new liner notes exploring The Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s history of Christmas music. The most wonderful time of the year has just gotten a bit more wonderful with the CD premiere of this lost classic from “America’s Choir” that’s sure to enliven your Christmas morning!

Drawing on the inspiration of traditional rhythms and sounds, notably from Latin America, Camino de Flores is an album that transports you to another place Following the success of his first LP, titled Balance, El Búho is back and takes us on a journey from high mountains to cascading waterfalls, from a dusky rainforest to a crackling fire beneath a clear, star-filled sky The album charts a pathway between traditional rhythms, the sound of the natural world, IDM electronica and a deep, enveloping dancefloor sound
With rhythms, instruments and effects built from field recordings or “found sound”, on Camino de Flores it is often hard to distinguish between synths and drum machines, from birds, water, rain or crunching leaves

Zë Nigrö
Silêncio
Entitled Silêncio, the new album is due in September and will arrive as a natural continuation of the first, featuring songs that had been left out as well as those that were part of Nigro's shows with the band. "The songs have come to life. Today I feel more confident about doing my own thing, more assured. I want to propose this listening to silence, to the hidden subtleties that are revealed in existence", he concludes.
Recording the first album was a personal adventure with an uncertain destination. Apocalip Se embodies this feeling of conducting an internal investigation, a rediscovery from the inside out. On the new album, the image on the cover is about being open, with your hands absorbing the outside, feeling the power of nature reflected in its greatness," Nigro reflects.
"I always woke up at 4 a.m. to the sound of a variety of birdsongs, and I kept thinking 'what are these birds saying? Do they even think about us?'". The artist then composed the instrumental part with his guitar and sent it to the poet Eveline Sin suggesting this theme, and she responded years later, at the time of the recording of Apocalip Se. The song was formed in several movements, also bringing together pianist and partner Dustan Gallas, with a new arrangement featuring more than 20 musicians, taking the new version to another level of interpretation. As for the construction of the melodies, Nigro reflects: "I think the voice is an instrument, a fascinating harmonic instrument". In addition to producing for numerous well-known artists, such as Russo Passapusso, Francisco el Hombre, Curumin, and Anelis Assumpção, onalbums that have marked the history of independent Brazilian music, Zé Nigro has used his role as a singer as a long experiment in self-knowledge."
ABOUT ZÉ NIGRO
Zé Nigro has accumulated knowledge throughout the entire journey of making a song, from the studio to the stage. The music producer, composer, arranger, and musician from São Paulo has had his work crowned by the Latin Grammys twice: first for the recording of Liniker's album Indigo Borboleta Anil (2022), which won in the Best MPB Album category, and for the audio engineering of João Donato's album Serotonina (2023). Nigro also received award nominations for the production of the albums Boca (2017) by Curumin and SoltasBruxa (2016), the debut album by the group Francisco el Hombre, which has reached over 50 million plays on digital platforms and won Platinum

With an introduction stitched together by conductor Arthur Verocai's orchestral arrangement, along with synthesizers and the strong pulse of the bass and drums, Gorjeios features lyrics by Eveline Sin. The song, which opens the second studio album by producer, composer, arranger, and musician Zé Nigro, was inspired by an attempt to decipher birdsong. Serving as a warning about the environmental crisis we're living through, the single features a dialogue between the orchestra, choirs, and synthesizers, giving a timeless characteristic to the song.
The collaboration with Arthur Verocai gave shape to a long-standing admiration. "When I first encountered Verocai's work, I was completely mesmerized. His arrangements are featured in the most incredible songs of Brazilian Popular Music. So, as soon as I met him in person at a recording session in 2021, I was overwhelmed by hearing his arrangement played by an impeccable orchestra. From then on, we started exchanging ideas about the arrangement of 'Gorjeios'", recalls Zé, who adds: "As soon as I sent him the song and asked if he liked it, he commented that it sounded like his own music, which made me feel honored, coming from an iconic MPB maestro. When I heard the arrangement played by the orchestra for the first time, it was a unique sensation – I almost fell off my chair."

Able Noise are a cross-continent duo based between The Hague (NL) and Athens (GR), built around the experimental baritone guitar and drum playing of George Knegtel and Alex Andropoulos. After a few formative attempts at collaboration, they officially came together as the Able Noise we see now in 2017, uniting over shared thoughts on art and performance encountered while studying at The Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague. Their first recorded work, a seamless 30 minutes of glistening postrock anti-formalism, emerged in low-key fashion in 2020 as a cassette through Glasgow’s famed GLARC label. Numerous European wide tours and left-of-centre festival appearances led the pair back to the studio for the recording of debut LP, High Tide,
The shift to a studio environment was a significant one, since Able Noise was primarily conceived as a live band, thinking of and writing for the live concert experience specifically. Consider their practice an Active Performance of sorts, one that seeks to challenge understandings of the medium of the live arena, how its properties and limitations can be addressed creatively, and the dialogical relationship between performer and the audience.
True to this approach, the pair have embarked upon the recording of their debut album with a similar exploratory impetus. In a studio without a physical audience to confront, the questions are suddenly quite different: how does one create a definitive recorded music initially rooted in improvisation, how is that recording then listened to and understood, and, without the spectacle of performance, how is it possible to work with the sense of hearing alone.

Ben Lukas Boysen’s new album, Alta Ripa, signifies a seismic shift in his artistic journey. It revisits the foundational impulses of his youth, shaped amidst the serene beauty of rural Germany a bucolic backdrop where his creative palette flourished. However, it was his move to Berlin in the early 2000s that electrified his sound, infusing it with the city’s pulsating energy and diverse cultural influences. Alta Ripa captures this transformative experience, blending the introspective melodies of his rural beginnings with the bold, experimental tones born from Berlin’s vibrant electronic music scene. This album is a testament to Boysen’s evolution, showcasing how geographical shifts can profoundly shape artistic expression.
Boysen’s fourth studio album under his own name, Alta Ripa is a nod to his beginnings as much as a hint to his future, and as a work, it’s almost contradictory in its boldness and humility. He invites the listener on a journey of self-discovery; both for himself and for them, describing the music as “something the 15-year-old in me would have liked to hear but only the grown-up version of myself can write.”
His last two albums involved working closely with other musicians, including cellist Anne Müller, flugelhorn player Steffen Zimmer, and drummer Achim Färber. However, inspired in part by a recent return to live performance, Alta Ripa sees Boysen circling back to his passion for pure computer music.
For Boysen, the return to his youthful musical language marks a major turning point in his career. It represents a departure from his roots in classical music – his mother was an opera singer and his father an actor with an appreciation for Wagner, Arvo Pärt, Keith Jarrett, and Stockhausen. Although these are still important influences, Alta Ripa encapsulates a new, exploratory interplay between Boysen’s careful craft and his ability to let go of some of the process.
The album’s title comes from the original Roman name of the town that Boysen grew up in, Altrip, where he lived until his early twenties. This formative period is central to the ideas behind this album, from Boysen’s parental ‘schooling’ in classical music through to his sonic journeys through drum and bass, Aphex Twin, and Autechre all of which changed his idea of what music could be. The extreme energy of tracks like ‘Acperience 1’ by Hardfloor, ‘Tracks & Fragment’ by Cari Lekebusch, ‘Focus2 Implan’ by Jiri.Ceiver, and ‘Low On Ice’ by Alec Empire are also pivotal influences.
For Boysen, this time of his musical development also involved knocking down the pillars that he previously thought had carried his world. A key moment for Boysen was being given a precious (pre-internet) club cassette at school that featured artists like Source Direct, Photek and Goldie. Excited by this new discovery, he introduced his father to the song ‘Dred Bass’ by Dead Dred. After the song finished, Boysen Sr. turned off the tape and proclaimed it was “the end of all music”. This heated exchange sparked a new, and more mature dialogue between the two that involved them sharing and discussing music on a regular basis.
Boysen’s classical and jazz music upbringing might not be easily noticeable from the electronic palette that he uses. But it can be found in its bones; the structure of the tracks and their dynamic shifts. On Alta Ripa, he intentionally embraces a spirit of controlled chaos, churning out sonic ideas to see what sticks.
One of Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategy cards contains the phrase “gardening, not architecture”, and the trajectory of Boysen’s creative path reflects this metaphor. In much of his previous work he followed a sort of Brutalist architect’s approach; here, he was fully responsible for the tracks’ austere structures and planned them with deliberate care. But by sacrificing some of that control on Alta Ripa, he sets the right conditions for a dark and unpredictable, organic growth. It’s a push forward into a new world.

Revolutionary takes on traditional folk, spliced with music concrète and field recordings along the Thames. This highly acclaimed album (Pitchfork, Quietus, Wire, etc.) is like no other. "All of it has the capacity to make your hair stand on end" - Pitchfork (7.7) // "A thing of rare emotional power." - The Quietus (31st best album of 2022) // "One of the most forward-thinking and original collections of traditional material you’re likely to hear this year, or any year." – FolkRadio // "Marks the arrival of a new generation of politically conscious traditional folk singers" – TradFolk // ‘The Water is the Shovel of the Shore’ is the revelatory new release by the nine-piece contemporary folk group Shovel Dance Collective, an expansive ensemble of multi-disciplinary artists and musicians currently based in London. Comprising members of caroline, Gentle Stranger, as well as accomplished visual artists and solo instrumentalists, Shovel Dance Collective reconceive traditional folk music as an experimental mode of longform composition, encompassing drone, early music, free improvisation, and metal. In the performances and recordings of the collective, the arrangements and lyricism of the folk canon are reinvented, as historically disenfranchised perspectives are placed at the forefront. Predicated on recounts of queer experience, black consciousness, pioneering feminist ideals, and the labour of the working class, the output of Shovel Dance Collective represents an inclusive repository of subversive oral folklore.

Young Marble Giants' "Colossal Youth" has mystified and beguiled audiences since its 1980 release. Seen by primary songwriter Stuart Moxham as "a last gasp" at making a record, Stuart insisted the one-off 7" deal offered by Rough Trade be altered to allow an entire album . . . that paid off when with a big seller which produces cover versions even from bands whose members were a decade or two away from being born on the album's release. When YMG disbanded, Stuart was at a loss; he'd never envisioned a follow-up. A series of experimental recordings made with pal Phil Legg (Essential Logic) and supported by other YMG members, musicians from This Heat and Swell Maps, old Cardiffian pals, and new friends like Vivien Goldman resulted in an album, "Embrace The Herd", as The Gist. Released just before Rough Trade made bold moves toward pop charts with Scritti Politti, The Smiths and others, the album was odd for its time, but has since taken on the lustre of genius. Years of silence followed, thereafter intermittently broken by the odd release from small labels. Stuart delved into family life, though he never stopped writing and recording. In more recent years, two retrospective compilation of lost recordings by The Gist have been released, as well as a superb collaboration with French arranger Louis Philippe, "The Devil Laughs". "Fabstract" is the final gathering of Stuart's lost recordings. Compiling long-lost YMG-era tracks with the recent brilliance of "Crow, Crow" and "Suburban Monochrome", through bits of whimsy and vastly alternate versions of fan faves, this diverse album shouldn't work . . . but it does, telling a satisfying story of an underrated talent whose mistake was following his muse, not the charts. This album precedes a new recording, years in the making, produced by Dave Trumfio, which promises to be Stuart's most complete - and original - work since "Colossal Youth".

KEELEY is a band led by Keeley Moss, with musicians Lukey Foxtrot and Andrew Paresi, although it's a tight-knight group who propel the project and it makes no sense not to mention manager Nick Clift and studio genius Alan Maguire, who are also intrinsic members of this outfit. There's a conceit behind the band's work. Every song in the band's full repertoire shares a single subjectInga Maria Hauser, a teenaged German backpacker found brutally assaulted and dead in a remote part of Ireland's Ballypatrick Forest in 1988. Moss's personal interest in the case caused her to create a blog, The Keeley Chronicles, which has reported on the case so doggedly that it's now viewed as the crucial source of public information on the case. And there's more to that story, of course. But our point is this: Beautiful Mysterious is that rarest of all jewels, the instant classic. Imagine going back in time to when you heard Fear Of Music, Colossal Youth or Forever Changes for the very first time, knowing what each would mean to you many years later. Don’t miss that chance with Keeley’s incredible Beautiful Mysterious. Well, here's your chance.
