All albums are pressed on clear vinyl with no banding, mastered from the original tapes by Warren Defever at Third Man Mastering, and feature printed inner sleeves with essays on each album by Mike McGonigal (author of books on My Bloody Valentine and Galaxie 500, and editor of Maggot Brain magazine).
His Name is Alive has had over a hundred releases since their first cassette in 1986. HNIA spent 13 years recording for the legendary label 4AD and sold 100,000+ records, toured the world, received gold and platinum records for soundtracking Tom Cruise’s nervous breakdown in the movie Jerry Maguire and collaborated on two short films with famed animators the Quay Brothers, and name-checked by David Bowie as one of his favourite artists.
Defever continues to live and work in Detroit and is one of the engineers heading up Third Man’s mastering studio.
“Disciples' series of archival His Name Is Alive releases reclaimed the project's early ambient works in a beautiful and carefully considered way, fascinating artifacts as well as a fine example of the ongoing creative dialogue Defever has always had with his music” AllMusic
“A real peek behind the curtain, these recordings stand on their own: beautiful ambient sketches that not only pull from Brian Eno but music from around the world, or that would have been heard on Smithsonian Folkways compilations around that time. Tribal drones, patches of guitar noise, weird loops, it all comes together...pure creation.” NPR
“An astonishing document of lo-fi alchemy.” Pitchfork
“That these decades old recordings sound oddly contemporary with modern electronic minimalists indicates how far ahead of the curve Defever’s always been.” Aquarium Drunkard

JD McPHERSON NITE OWLS
JD McPherson has created something unique and amazing with his latest album, Nite Owls, his first album release since 2018’s critically acclaimed Christmas classic, SOCKS. Over the past 5+ years, McPherson has stayed consistently busy writing new songs while at the same time touring with Alison Krauss and Robert Plant. Being a touring musician offers the chance to see the sights, tour the town and pick up some inspiration from the local record shop. With Nite Owls, JD wanted to try something new and different. He wanted to take the inspiration from multiple decades and styles and incorporate them into his own sound. “The initial idea for the record was: It’s like if The late-60s Ventures were the session band on the first New Order record.” Says, McPherson. Idea achieved. Nite Owls delivers the signature sounds of vintage garage-rock while also seamlessly bridging the sounds of Bowie and Alan Vega. Songs such as “Sunshine Getaway”, “The Rock and Roll Girls” and “I Can’t Go Anywhere with You” sound like Chuck Berry is jamming with Buddy Holly. While songs like “Nite Owls” and “Don’t Travel Through the Night Alone” give a nod to the Factory sound from the UK. The throwback sound of the lone instrumental track “The Phantom Lover of New Rochelle” would make Dick Dale ride and Link Wray rumble. With Nite Owls, McPherson takes inspiration from multiple genres of the past and combines them together to evolve a sound that is all his own.

TSHA SAD GIRL
Release Date: September 27, 2024
Arising superstar in the electronic world, TSHAmakes music built on bright, melodic house foundations, bringing in UK garage and rave sensibilities, and has been widely tipped by the dance music press — appearing on the covers of Mixmag and DJ Mag — as wellasthelikesoftheObserver,BillboardandInterview mag.
On TSHA’s new album 'Sad Girl' she taps into her teenage years, with strokes of ‘00s R&B, rude electro and anthemic techno, recalling the bittersweetness and angst of early adulthood. Joining her on the record are a number of hotly tipped up and coming vocalists, including Rose Gray and Master Peace, along with TSHAherself on three tracks, seeing her step up to the mic for the first time ever, with stunning results. The iconic artwork came to TSHA in a dream, where she was trapped underwater, struggling to reach the surface. Her appearing on an iceberg represents overcomingthisstruggleandreclaimingherself.

HELLA THE DEVIL ISN’T RED
ZACH HILL (DEATH GRIPS) AND SPENCER SEIM (THE ADVANTAGE)
“‘The Devil Isn't Red’ systematically shakes down like it was the rocker's score to upper- level Tetris – no matter how swiftly the pieces descend, Hella manage to drop them in place.” – Pitchfork
“...Seim's finger-flying, trebly electric guitar and Hill's tom-spattering percussion style is still Hella's main method of destruction...” – AllMuisc
“It’s one bad motherfu**in’ art-metal record.” – dustedmagazine

Very few groups have the ability to pull off instrumentals as abstract, as unforgettably chaotic, or as decidedly original as does Hella. The spazz-core style contained within the nine tracks of Hold Your Horse Is is a beauty to behold, yet is certainly not for the meek or close-minded. It should be known that these nine songs are purely instrumentals, that no vocalization is needed, and that no matter what you have heard before, Hella is bound to make an impression you won't soon forget. The enjoyable cataclysm of sound seems to come from a whole orchestra of musicians, yet this wild album was in fact created by only two people, Spencer Selm and Zach Hill. •
“... perhaps something like the holy grail of math rock.” – HHV Mag
LESIBU GRAND TRIGGERED
STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 27, 2024
TRACKLISTING:
In the creation of Triggered, Lesibu Grand ventured into a profound musical journey, navigating creativity, collaboration, and compromise. Over three years, amidst challenges and triumphs, the band crafted an album that reflects society's complexities. Led by vocalist Tyler-Simone Molton and bassist John Renaud, with guitarist Brian Turner, drummer Lee Wiggins, and keyboardist Warren Ullom, each song delves into raw emotions and societal commentary. From tumultuous relationships to yearnings for change, the album resonates with a common sentiment of being "triggered"—a feeling of being in “fight or flight”. Recorded in sections, Triggered showcases dedication and meaningful collaboration.
The band name, Lesibu Grand (Pronounced Le-SEE-boo), derives from the front woman, Tyler-Simone L. Molton's middle name, Lesibu. This was a name given to her by her mother as it was her last name that was passed down from her South African Father, the maternal grandfather of Tyler-Simone. Lesibu Grand has performed at AfroPunk Fest, SXSW, Punk Black Fest and Hulaween, and have been featured in BrooklynVegan, Alternative Press, Under The Radar, and Paste Magazine. Their music has been played on taste-maker radio stations including KEXP, WEQX, and KTCL’s Punk Tacos among many others. Through their debut full length Triggered, the band seeks to inspire healing, ignite change, and ultimately, rock out.

“Trap Girl is my perfect cup of poisoned tea.” – John Waters
The Savage Goddess, Trap Girl’s debut LP, is about resilience and perseverance. It explores the duality of life - the beautiful light and the dark pain, love and struggle. With a “pretty but deadly” energy, the title itself reflects this theme, representing life in all its complexity.
Bursting with raw energy and unapologetic fervor, the album explores the complexities of life through a lens of punk and hardcore grit. Each track on The Savage Goddess delves deep into themes of empowerment, societal defiance, and personal struggle. From the anthemic power of “Baddest Bitch,” which celebrates strength and self-assertion, to the defiant stance of “Death Dress,” confronting societal rejection and the fight for authenticity, every song on the album resonates with passion and purpose.
“Our goal was to create music that inspires listeners to push through obstacles and never give up.”
Inventively gritty and revolutionary, Trap Girl is demanding to be heard. The Los Angeles-based band was called together in 2014 by beehive hair, short dress and high heel donned frontwoman Drew Arriola-Sands, drummer Jorge Reveles, guitarist Esteban Moreno, and bassist Ibette Oritz. With a “pretty but deadly” energy, Trap Girl tells tales of perseverance, life and its complexities, and the fight for personal agency in the face of injustice.
Described as “The mamas and the papas from the deep pits of hell” (Suicide Inc), Trap Girl’s music is as unpredictable as it is compelling, occasionally messy yet always intoxicating—a visceral journey that revitalizes the spirit. Sonically, Trap Girl is loud, gritty, impulsive, and their music fills you with a sense of urgency. In their bold defiance and unbridled authenticity, Trap Girl not only confronts societal boundaries but also offers a celebration of life in its rawest, most unapologetic form.
SUNRA-LANQUIDITY
“Enter the sober, tranquil chambers of the next moment. Soft angles of lights into space, chords of blue and gold. Melting impressions of liquid dreams.” Michael Ray, Sun Ra Arkestra
Strut present the definitive official edition of Sun Ra’s classic ‘Lanquidity’ album, originally released on Philly Jazz in 1978.
Recorded overnight at Bob Bank’s Blank Tapes on 17th July 1978 after the Arkestra had appeared on Saturday Night Live, the album is unique in the Ra catalogue “Most critics felt that it was more of a fusion-inspired record,” explains Michael Ray “As the name suggests, the album is liquid and languid ” Bob Blank continues, “Musically, it was very ad hoc and freeform There were horn charts but most tracks came out of improvised jams Sun Ra just did his thing ”
Comprising five effortlessly fluid pieces, the album eases in with Lanquidity Danny Ray Thompson remembers, “This was one of Sun Ra’s on-the-spot compositions It is almost like an Ancient Egyptian Stargazing Ceremony, mapping out the stars and the planets ” Where Pathways Meet is “Sun Ra’s funky version of an Egyptian march Pharaoh is sending his troops off to fight and this is his pep-talk!” continues Thompson “The music seems to take different pathways but still converges ” The loping groove of That’s How I Feel, features the reflective trumpet lines of Eddie Gale with solos by John Gilmore and Marshall Allen: “Marshall comes in with that snake charming oboe ” Says Thompson The funky Twin Stars Of Thence weaves around Richard Williams celebrated elastic bassline while the haunting closer, There Are Other Worlds (They Have Not Told You Of), is pure “space music.” The poet Mama Nzinga described it as ‘The essence of light. Spirit takes a ride inside the deep dark space of just being.”
The new 1LP edition of ‘Lanquidity’ features the widely distributed version of the album originally released on Philly Jazz and reflects the album’s original packaging with a metallic foil / magenta sleeve. The 2CD version, also in foil packaging, features this version of the album alongside alternative mixes by Bob Blank originally released in limited quantities for a 1978 Arkestra gig at Georgia Tech Both formats feature unseen photos by Veryl Oakland and liner notes by Tom Buchler (Philly Jazz), Michael Ray and Danny Ray Thompson (Sun Ra Arkestra) and Bob Blank

Among its many applications, zinc accelerates wound healing, coats x-ray screens, galvanizes steel to deter rust, and lengthens the life of batteries
It proves both versatile and essential much like music does Creating with the precision of a chemist, GRAMMY® Award-nominated Gallant combines, co-mingles, and collates sonic elements, inciting a physical, emotional, and spiritual reaction in the process His recognizable falsetto drips over a musical formulation fortified by glitchy beat-craft, spacey piano, incendiary guitar, and nocturnal rhythms
With over 1 billion total streams and views, widespread acclaim, and sold out shows in the rearview mirror, he boldly progresses on his third fulllength LP and Mom + Pop Music debut, Zinc “I was watching Jeopardy, and ‘Zinc ’ was one of the answers,” he recalls “It was like a scene out of a movie where the camera zooms into the main character’s head, and you see all of these equations everywhere Zinc was the one word that could describe everything I was feeling, because it’s a chemical material with healing properties ”
Gallant first introduced an ever-evolving signature style via his 2016 debut Ology In addition to spawning the instantly recognizable “Weight In Gold,” the album notably garnered a GRAMMY® nomination in the category of Best Urban Contemporary Album ” He only continued to push the envelope on Sweet Insomnia [2019], Neptune EP [2021], and the collaborative sneek [2023] with Terrace Martin He also shined as the rare chameleonic presence equally comfortable on a track with either Dua Lipa and Noah Cyrus or Brandy, Sufjan Stevens, and Seal Beyond stunning audiences at Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Austin City Limits, he delivered standout performances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Later with Jools Holland, and TODAY, to name a few Along the way, he garnered acclaim from Interview, The FADER, Complex, coup de main, and Harpers Bazaar who succinctly declared, “He has the voice of a winner ” Untethered from the major label system and free from expectations, he teamed up with producer Ariza in 2023 and brought Zinc to life “I saw Zinc as the album I’d make if I had the chance to follow up my first record Ology again,” he admits “It’s a fresh start without confusion and the pressures of being part of a big machine When I started writing it, I had no label or large team I met Ariza, and the process mirrored how I did Ology with Stint All that mattered was if a song spoke to me and if it reflected all of the weird things that make up who I am as a fan and as a person I entertained myself and got a lot off my chest I stuck to my guns and created an unfettered body of work that feels like me ” He sounds utterly unrestrained on the single “Fly On The Wall (Osaka Version) ” The track’s lithe acoustic guitar washes over hazy keys His delivery quakes with raw emotion in a moment of clarity “Excavating every word that I said when I was drunk on false power who was I to blame for how I’m losing grip?” He exhales on the hook “Please don’t mind me I’m a fly on the wall ”
It came together as an honest and visceral story I’d been trying to write for a long time,” he admits It’s focused on the lyrics The chorus reminded me of saying something I regretted in the heat of the moment during an argument ” A head-nodding beat and loose bassline pulsate through twinkling keys on “Crimes Of Compassion As the momentum picks up, the hypnotic chant transfixes, “Cuz these crimes of compassion leave you looking like youre lost in a labyrinth “I was talking about relationships and how one thing that poisons a particular relationship could come back in the next relationship whether it’s with a friend, family member, or romantic partner,” he reveals “I was trying to diagnose the issue and speak to the cyclical nature of it all Musically, it follows an emotional arc, tracing different touchpoints of a relationship You have to fix the issue before it manifests again ” Then, there’s “Centigrade ” featuring Nao Gallant’s high register floats between the cracks of percussive claps and a gusty synth loop as Nao counters with an emotionally charged response “It’s about the fallout of an argument,” he elaborates “When you get into an argument, there’s a period where you’re alone afterwards and you have to think about what started it I’m fascinated by the idea of the pause when you’re disagreeing with someone you love It’s an interesting purgatory where you’re wondering if it makes sense to go forward or not ”
Laced with intergalactic infectiousness the upbeat and energetic “Atoms ” orbits a space-funk guitar riff blasting off into a wild wailing lead and otherworldly refrain
I was channeling the anger of being accused of something you didn’t do and trying to fix a problem that might not be yours to fix,” he says It’s like you’re splitting atoms for someone else I thought of a time where I felt deeply misunderstood and unfairly demonized Sonically, it has a mid-eighties palette Ive been testing it live, and its already my favorite to play
Zinc concludes with the alternately delicate and explosive lull of “Lucid He wonders, “Whats the point if I only feel alive when Im lucid dreaming? Gasping for air, his screams lock into a call-and-response with the guitar
“It’s most indicative of how this period was for me,” he admits “I was completely dissociating from reality I’d sit in a bathtub, drink a ton of beer, and watch hours of an awards show from 1988 or whatever I wrote the song in this zone I was struggling with depression I was almost scared the track was too sad for this, but I’m trying to get the fuck out of whatever hole I was in at the time There’s an optimistic connotation, because I get the sense something better is yet to come ”
At the most basic level, he’s crafting the music he wanted to hear, and the world needs “I made something that felt like Gallant music,” he leaves off “I’m just a dude who likes taking a bunch of things that don’t necessarily go together and putting them together I’m very lucky to be in a position where I’ll meet someone who listens to my music and we connect; it’s like we went to the same high school I create the kind of music I wish existed and I could hear as a fan ”

MIAMI SOUND 2
More Funk & Soul From Miami, Florida 1967-74
27th Sep 2024
Soul Jazz Records’ new Miami Sound 2 is a superlative collection of 70s soul, funk, disco and boogie featuring tracks from legendary artists such as Betty Wright, Timmy Thomas, Gwen McRae, Milton Wright, T-Connection and many more, all released on the mighty TK Records musical empire based in Miami, Florida.
Throughout the 1970s founder Henry Stone’s TK Records rose up to be one of the most important forces in black music, successfully pioneering the evolution in musical fashions from the early gritty funk and soul at the start of the decade to the arrival of disco in the mid-70s.
This album is a rollercoaster journey across soul, funk, disco and boogie, a party-rocking dancefloorfilling collection of monster tracks that includes million-selling hits such as Betty Wright’s classic ‘Clean Up Woman’, Timmy Thomas’s ‘Why Can’t We Live Together’, T-Connection’s ‘Do What You Wanna Do’, anthemic rare groove club hits including Gwen McCrae’s massive ‘All This Love I’m Giving’ and Milton Wright’s ‘Keep It Up’, plus a host of hard-to-find gems and rarities from the likes of Raw Soul Express, Chocolate Clay, Beginning of the End, Robert Moore, Clarence Reid, Little Beaver, Paulette Reeves and many more.
TK Records functioned more like a close-knit family than a typical record company. Based in the industrial Hialeah district of Miami, music man Henry Stone surrounded himself with a host of creative artists, musicians, songwriters and producers who created an immediately identifiable TK sound as well as making musical stars out of many of its artists.
Miami Sound 2 comes with extensive sleevenotes as well as an exclusive interview with Steve Alaimo, co-founder with Henry Stone of this musical empire. The album also features the photography of TK in-house photographer Larry Warmoth, whose rarely seen striking and unique images of Gwen McRae, Betty Wright, Clarence Reid and others offer a fascinating window into the pioneering record company.

Canadian singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist LEIF VOLLEBEKK is a philosophy student turned troubadour who marries Carl Jung’s I Ching musings and Wittgenstein’s love of language with his own lyrical poetry on the aptly named Revelation, a product of the introspection brought on by the lockdown. The 11 tracks, including a pair of orchestrated, cinematic set pieces, evoke the narrative skills of fellow countrymen Leonard Cohen and Gordon Lightfoot, the crystalline sound of The Eagles, anchored by the rich intimacy of Nick Drake. The completed work, organic, earthy and homemade, weaves themes of nature – water, astral constellations, mortality – into a meditation on living in an ever-changing present laced with existential doubt, the search for a higher power.

This album is about memories. About a feeling of nostalgia and longing, both beautifully comforting and devastating. It is an attempt to transform an unspoken sensation of the past to a solid object serving the future, an urge to remember and hold onto moments that we can't keep forever.
On the 6th of October 2023, the release date of her third solo album ‘Ghosts’, Hania performed a very special album release concert with a string ensemble in a uniquely special location - Witold Lutosławski's Concert Studio at the Polish Radio in Warsaw. Over the years, the spaces of Polish Radio have become an important part of Hania’s lifeboth privately and professionally. Visiting for the first time as a student of Chopin University of Music and returning to make her first recordings in late 2018, just before the release of the debut album ‘Esja’. It was also in these studios that Hania recorded her Live from Studio 2 video and EP. But whereas that featured a much-loved solo performance, for this very special recording from the larger Studio 1, Hania is joined by her regular collaborator Ziemowit Klimek on double bass and moog as well as a luxurious eight-piece string ensemble featuring Karolina Gutowska violin Jan Pietkiewicz violin Marta Piórkowska violin, Paweł Czarny viola, Tomasz Rosiński viola, Dobrawa Czocher cello, Marianna Sikorska cello, Mateusz Błaszczak cello.
Beautifully mixed by Greg Freeman in Berlin the music takes on a new life as Hania’s ethereal vocals, beautiful playing and exhilarating compositions are brought fully to life by the beautiful sweeping strings of the expanded ensemble. The concert is included here in its entirety with the addition of one beautiful extra performance – the title track ‘Nostalgia’ a beautiful interpretation of a much-loved piece from the Ghosts album taken from her concert at the Roundhouse in London.
In addition the LP features a beautiful 16 page booklet of photographs of the Polish radio studios taken by Hania herself and featuring her thoughts on the recording, studios and the compositions themselves and the CD includes the photos in a beautiful glued in 12 page booklet.

Description
• INBETWEEZER is the 10th record by L.A. songwriter, producer and performer Jerry Paper.
• Jerry’s new album sees them “trying to figure out how to shake my shit up and get my life moving. Learning to follow my front ear and listen towards my life, rather than my idea of what my life is supposed to be.”
• The album is transitional, it’s about making big decisions and accepting them. It’s also about change – how it can feel “heavy and big, but experimentation and playfulness is a perfectly appropriate way to meet that change.”

OVERVIEW
New York trio Sunflower Bean—vocalist and bassist Julia Cumming (she/her), guitarist and vocalist Nick Kivlen (he/him), and drummer Olive Faber (she/ her)— will release their new EP, Shake, on September 27th. The band’s first fully self-produced and recorded project, Shake features some of Sunflower Bean’s heaviest, most immediate, and loudest music to date. Influenced by the doomladen, heavy metal sound of Black Sabbath the EP is an embrace of rock tropes and excess, and recalls the sonic of the band’s earliest work, Show Me Your Seven Secrets and Human Ceremony
“SHAKE was inspired by our first years as a DIY band, the spirit that birthed us and gave us the chance to have this enduring journey together,” Sunflower Bean explain of the EP. “We wrote, recorded, engineered, and produced these songs so nothing was filtered through anyone else’s idea of us. We always felt like rock and roll was a feeling, not a sound. But sometimes there is no subverting it or explaining it. We’re now offering it exactly as it occurred to us.”

Australia’s Tropical Fuck Storm, Gareth Liddiard, Fiona Kitschin, Erica Dunn, and Lauren Hammel, cordially welcome you to TFS’ Inflatable Graveyard, their debut live album. Released via the venerable Three Lobed Recordings, it captures their October 22, 2022 show at Chicago’s Lincoln Hall, at the peak of their “Fuck the Rain Away” tour. The performance, which spans 11 songs and over an hour of music, contains highlights from their three studio albums (2018’s A Laughing Death in Meatspace, 2019’s Braindrops, and 2021’s Deep States), accompanied by a pair of covers (“Ann” by the Stooges and “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees). Consider TFS’ Inflatable Graveyard a Greatest Hits album in the purest sense: their eldritch psychedelic ethos trapped on wax, raw and unfiltered.
From TFS’ perspective, “Fuck the Rain Away” was no mere rescheduled trek, but a full-blown revenge tour; the pandemic hit right as they were gearing up to play these very shows, effectively exiling them for the next two years. They bided their time at home dropping an LP, Deep States (plus a handful of EPs and singles); hitting the studio with King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard; and even releasing a feature film, Goody Goody Gumdrops. Eventually, the world opened up again. And, new material and hand, so the quartet made their move.
The release of TFS’ pent-up creative energy, when combined with the crowd’s fervor and anticipation they’d been waiting an equally longass time, after all results in an explosive feedback loop unlike anything the band have captured on record thus far. It’s a kind of chemical reaction, a persistent euphoria that starts up the minute they take the stage to “Men’s Only Costume Party” a bright, somewhat bizarre reggae track one of their friends cooked up in the TFS tour van and is locked into place thirty seconds or so later, with the scorching opening measures of “Braindrops.” Excitement leads to spontaneity, and before long, fan favorites are assuming remarkable new forms at staggering scale. If you thought the Zappa-esque tantrums on “You Let My Tyres Down” and “Chameleon Paint” sounded unhinged before, wait until you encounter them here; ditto for the subtle dynamic tweaks to “Paradise” and “Antimatter Animals,” all hypnotic effects and rhythmic mind games.
TFS save their best, of course, for the encore: a one-two punch that affirms their status as one of experimental rock’s pre-eminent supergroups, while simultaneously setting the stage for the foursome’s next chapter. Following a soaring, expanded take on ”Two Afternoons,” the band launch into what is perhaps their most ebullient song to date: a cover of Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive,” featuring Dunn on lead vocals, which galvanizes the catharsis of the preceding 10 songs into a hallucinogenic fever dream that’s equally conducive to moshing and making out. In the wake of Kitschin’s successful fight against cancer (a battle that started several months after this recording), that iconic chorus feels not just impactful, but premonitory. Pandemics, illness, a world on fire, political unrest: Tropical Fuck Storm might be temporarily halted now and again, but in the end, their drive makes them unstoppable.

In a career full of bold, genre-blending statements, Wendy Eisenberg’s double album Viewfinder is their boldest yet. Viewfinder is about what happens when you reach clarity and it throws you off-balance, and what it means to love something without understanding why you love it. Eisenberg leads a large band of NYC jazz musicians, including Booker Stardrum (drums) and Chris Williams (trumpet). Together, they push the boundaries of jazz into songcraft, songcraft into art song, and art song into jazz, cementing Eisenberg’s work as a guitarist, improviser, composer - and establishing Eisenberg as a singular talent in 21st-century jazz.

NEVA DINOVA
Canary
SEPTEMBER 27TH, 2024
NEVA DINOVA’S FIRST ALBUM SINCE 2008’S YOU MAY ALREADY BE DREAMING FEATURING “EDGE OF SOMETHING”, “LONELY HEART”, AND “NEAR ME”
“Bellows (of Neva Dinova) has a rich, aching voice, like a rough-around-the-edges Jeff Buckley” - PITCHFORK
PRESSED ON “NEST” RED VINYL
It’s a new chapter in the history of Neva Dinova. Although the band are beloved by many, they’ve never had the same name recognition as their Omaha-bred peers and collaborators like Bright Eyes and Cursive. However that’s likely to change with the band’s reinvigorating new full-length Canary, which features a new lineup, fresh perspective and a sound that’s more urgent than anything they’ve created in the past. While there was talk of reactivating Neva Dinova pre-pandemic, the catalyst ended up being an offer from Cursive to support them on tour last year in support of the 20th anniversary of their landmark album Domestica
Newly energized, songwriter/guitarist/singer Jake Bellows immediately started sending demos to longtime drummer Roger L. Lewis and just-recruited bassist Megan Siebe, and they began woodshedding new songs alongside fan favorites like “Clouds” and “Yellow Datsun.” The latest incarnation of Neva Dinova was born. After an East Coast run, the band returned to Omaha to record Canary at Make Believe Studios. “I’m trying to cover a lot more space in the band now because there’s only one guitar, so I write a little differently in order to cover that space.” (An understatement considering the previous lineups of the band featured three guitarists.) The result is an album that is more focused while still allowing for the occasional Neil Young-inspired guitar solo or unexpected sonic flourish. While previous Neva Dinova albums such as 2008’s You May Already Be Dreaming were labored on in the studio, the songs on Canary were honed on the road allowing for a largely live recording session that captures the visceral energy of the band.
From the fuzzed-out grandeur of “Edge of Something” that kicks off the record through the electronica/hip-hop accents on album closer “I Can See Further Now,” the album sees Neva Dinova stepping out sonically and condensing their songs in powerful blasts of focused energy. As always, the unifying ingredient is Bellows’s distinctive baritone voice as he croons about existential dread, alienation, and hypocrisy – though offset with moments of levity and hopefulness. “Love and Kindness” is a reference to the ongoing war in Gaza while “Something To Lose” was inspired by the loss of Bellows’s beloved dog, Dragon. “That song is about the idea that maybe you’d rather never love anybody or anything because it’s just another thing to lose, and that really resonated with me at the time,” he says of the latter track.
“When you’re involved in the arts there’s some expectation for you to be smart or know stuff and I don’t want to be that poser anymore,” he explains. There’s a liberation in that lack of pretense—and even when Bellows is musing about his own limitations in “Near Me,” there’s a beauty in the imperfections: The subtle buzzing of the amp, the finger noise on the strings and Bellows’s voice rising above all of it in a way that’s distinctly Neva Dinova.
Canary is a raw and unfiltered glimpse of Bellows’s psyche and an electrifying batch of songs — unpretentious, empathetic, weathered, and wizened. It also marks a second act for one of indie rock’s most underrated acts.

Perhaps you first encountered Lesley Arfin in the pages of Vice where her “Dear Diary” column ran for six years in the aughts, rampaging you the reader through the flaming youth of a Long Island misfit girl and all the shit she tried. Or maybe it was the book collection all those searing “Diary” entries coupled with latter-day Lesley’s acerbic responses. Or perhaps, like yer present writer, you sat up late, until late became early, falling in with the poor fucked-up creatures of Love (Netflix, 2016–2019), your heart breaking for the familiarity of their simple desires and the mayhem that followed.
Plus, there’s Girls, Awkward., Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Betty . . . there’s any number of ways you might have happened upon Lesley Arfin over the past twenty-plus years. As a comedian and a writer and a producer, her signature ability is to channel the heaviest of feels from the excruciating kind of real-life trouble that people put themselves through just trying to live every day. A gut-punch punctuated with a belly-laugh.
Let’s reflect on Tickle Me, and Lesley’s path not traveled (until now): visual artist! As a kid, she wanted to write comic books (and damn, she still could and they’d be great). But she wasn’t a happy artist in her youth, or a good one (so she thought), so she stuck to writing, up until her acumen’d brought her to the apex of the craft: the grind of network television. By then, doing a little painting seemed downright relaxing!
Plus, it was therapeutic until it got to be so compelling it was like OCD. The busier she was with work, marriage, having a baby the more images came, the more paintings piled up. As you move through the images that make up Tickle Me, you see Lesley tapping her familiar depths and the creepy humor that she finds down there but through an outrageous riot of flowers and colors and 70s Sears Catalog imagery! If this is a safe space, then is there actually NO safe space?
Fuhgettaboutit it’s all just life space. Tickle Me features Lesley’s early expressions of her truth in graphic art. Glittery reflections on gender, weather, mistakes, feminism, fantasy, failure, nostalgia; her own personal language rendered in watercolor, gauche, acrylic, fiber, stickers and collage. Like life, no guarantees, other than from that from any beginning, it can only keep growing. And it has, and it will.

Six Organs of Admittance extend their annum of unlikely delights begun in March ’24 with Time is Glass, the first new 6OOA album in four years, and joined in June with the most unlikely awesome collab of ’24: Shackleton & Six Organs of Admittance, Jinxed by Being – with the release of Companion Rises ( Twig Harper Remix), which expands the zone of disbelief simply by being the third Six Organs -branded release in one year! Also by pushing the boundaries in all the manners that matter psychologically, spiritually, philosophically and sonically into a new dimensional space.
Companion Rises dropped in February 2020. Its new techniques in sound generation called for an aggressive new moment, with heavy Six Organs touring scheduled for the year ahead. Yeah flash forward to 2023! As Ben Chasny picked up the pieces following the Big Blink, he had to think of what could have been, like: “What would Companion Rises sound like if I had known how crazy the world it was built for was gonna be?”
By then, Six Organs had moved on both Time is Glass and Jinxed by Being were in the works but here was a thought: Companion Rises was a record about the weirdness of California. Right then, Twig Harper was touching down in Cali after stints in Baltimore and Chicago. Ben’d been onboard with Twig’s shit since the days when Nautical Almanac burst out of Michigan like an engorged, inflamed, screaming blood vessel. Such a special noise! And Twig’s chaos sense has evolved and refined in amazing ways over the years (see releases on Hanson Records, Thrill Jockey, Planam, Open Mouth, Primordial Void, Radical Documents, Ha Ha Ha Cassettes and Twig’s own Heresee label), so when Ben asked him if he would do whatever he wanted, it felt like full circles were colliding when Twig said yeah!
Once Twig had measured out the physics of Companion Rises, most of his Remix was done up in his van where he, otherwise homeless, was living. When he got the stems from Ben , he just started working it out right there, rather than spending the time finding a place to live. It’s more fun running signal through his Ableton DSP rack, ALWAYS. And it worked out well he’ll probably move a bunch more times in his life, but this record is FOREVER.
In the Twig Harper Remix, the maximal qualities of original Companion Rises DNA are evoked via omission: to recreate the implied construction of Six Organs’ spirit realm, Twig isolated source sounds, triggered new data off those sounds, then edited the new readouts. To the naked ear, it sounds to be a highly stimulating new example in modern electronic minimal classical music. The assiduous Organs -head will no doubt find a few Easter eggs here, but mostly, this is new dimensional space made of the not-so-old one.
Companion Rises ( Twig Harper Remix) is like two journeys in one, juxtaposing Twig’s new-to-Cali “What the fuck IS this place” musings with Six Organs’ original borne-and-bread wanderings. Play ’em back to back, they play fresh through and through! Or play ’em on top of each other and wait for the moment of concision to arrive. And now it sounds as weird as Ben wanted; maybe ALMOST as weird as the world outside today. Hit play

Dean Spunt’s all-new Basic Editions is an excursion in electronic sound that instrumentally unpacks his fascination with language — in this case, the syntax of systems and processes. By turns meditative, compulsive and consumptive, Basic Editions distills a 64 voice module through a headful of ideas — somewhat like pouring a cornucopia of possible ambient moods and EZ listening impulses backwards through a funnel, inspiring a deceptively absurd rainbow of soul to spray out the other end.
With this new release, Dean IDs his process as “using sounds, rather than making sounds.” This approach to music-making is a train of thought that’s been rolling out from the far horizon of the past for ages now — but for Dean, whose previous works within and without No Age depended on their making of sounds, it’s a fresh work stance. Given, however, No Age’s traditional sonic manipulations (via loops and treatments), Basic Editions delivers further unexpected hard-rights and lefts in the non-aesthetic aesthetic that has defined Dean’s path over the past two decades. Steering toward wacked digital soundscapes that bounce colorfully across the stereo azimuth, Dean creates a kind of post-ambient neo-exotica that hinges upon a giddy conflation of cosmic and comic.
And to think that it all happened ’cause of a glimpse of an E-mu Mo’Phatt at the local online gearery! Dean was looking for a box to give him a new angle; not knowing anything about this one seemed like the right path through the next phase of his own adventure. This “urban dance synth” was made great use of in hip-hop productions around the turn of the millennium. There’s lots more to know about the machines of that time — choose your own rabbit hole — but the takeaway here is that it generates a finite amount of very circa-2000 sounds and he got it for fifty bucks. Inspired, Dean spent a minute getting its basic capacities in hand, while acquiring a few other boxes with compatible cards (more sounds!). Then he was rolling — doing gigs with his Mo’Phatt and a midi-keyboard while recording more involved collages at home.
In one way of thinking, Basic Editions is the sound of Dean not being influenced by anything — how could he be? The sounds were all preset! There is, however, an instinctiveness to pushing a closed system in a curatorial manner, and it’s here that Dean’s inclinations took the wheel of the proceedings, bending the farmed sounds in and out of color and shape, creating improbable constructions whose gears clash together and revolve with an odd combination of nerviness and chill. It’s all RIYL: Moebius, Nuno Canavarro, General Magic & Pita, Carl Stone, Jon Hassell.
Further refinements are provided with the artwork, which reprocesses generic graphic information sourced from various modules, while the album title tips its cap to a fine rank-and-file clothing line offered at K-Mart. Courtesy of Dean Spunt, a Basic Editions all its own — now on the rack for counter-insurgent sonic wanderers everywhere!

Jill Fraser is a composer and electronic music pioneer, active since the 1970s. Her credits are many and varied yet her new album, Earthly Pleasures , takes a unique place among all her work: a luminous suite of electroacoustic music examining the bones of hymnal harmony, speculating on how the spirit of our songs might be interpreted after we’re gone.
Playing electronic music was what Jill’s seen for herself almost from the beginning. Switched on Bach was an early influence, blowing up her understanding of what she was learning on the piano. So was Silver Apples of the Moon , evolving recognizable aspects of classical music into a fantastic elsewhere.
She studied at CalArts, working with Morton Subotnick (her mentor) and taking master classes with John Cage and Lou Harrison , among others. Working at Serge Modular Music in the late 1970s, she built her own modular synth. She composed film scores with Jack Nitzsche (Cruising , Personal Best ) and played her synthesizer at punk shows opening for Minutemen and Henry Rollins. She toured with Buffy Sainte-Marie Over the years, she’s won Clios for her original music for commercials, while continuing to write music for films. She’s released several albums of her own. When her daughter Sofia was playing with Wand , Jill contributed electronics to one of the songs on Laughing Matter. More recently, she’s composed music for an album release with The zZyzx Society, and she regularly performs live with the band re:VOLT, who were invited last year to make a version of Mort Subotnick’s “Sidewinder” for his 90th birthday celebration, which they subsequently performed live at the San Francisco Electronic Music Festival.

And still, Earthly Pleasures stands out from all these things Jill’s done. Balancing composition, technology and introspection, it is a fluent expression that also considers mortality and loss; not simply our own lives and the lives of those we love, but the mortality of the very age we live in, the intelligence of our time.
For Earthly Pleasures ’ composition, Jill began by researching revival hymns of the late 19th and early 20th centuries (with an instinctive bias towards those composed by women). Her workstation combines both the newest technology and some of the oldest analog electronic sound sources, a combo involving her original 1978 Serge Modular, a new Prism Modular and Ableton Push 3. As she writes in her liner notes:
“I’ve slowed these hymns down, dissected them, and fragmented them into tiny grains. Some are slow and meditative, some are dots of sound twinkling like stars in the sky. Some sound like computers trying to figure out tiny bits of data. Sometimes slow moving tones intersect to form clouds of sound. I wanted to make them unrecognizable yet still retain the inspiration and emotion.”
The sound world of Earthly Pleasures accesses a seeming infinity of dimensional sound in which the human hand is always keenly felt, no matter how deep the space. It’s a breathtakingly transcendent album that suggests inclusion within a diversity of genres: Ambient, Electronic, New Age, Modern Classical, Gospel, Healing, Sacred . It is the work of a veteran composer and synth master at the peak of her powers, meditating upon the detritus of memory, the passage of all consciousness, and the rebirth of meaning in a new era.

DC923A LP

DC923Z CASSETTE
The work of Whitney Johnson a.k.a. Matchess, is, in their own words, “a material history of reproduction.” From our grateful vantage point, it sounds like sequences of hypnotic and engaging forms, a combination of musical concepts and available materials for the purpose of transcendence. Hav and Stena challenge linear description, and even language, reflecting the perceived values and details of multiple times/intentions/places into essential aspects, repurposed as music. In that sense, there’s TOO many ways into these new sounds, but they’re not mutually exclusive and they’re all ways IN, so it’s okay. This includes the simplest action that of listening to the music without any context. But as you’ve gotten this far a few notes on process: Hav and Stena began to exist in 2021 while Whitney was researching the Cult of Hermaphroditus and visiting all the available sites of the cult’s activity in Cyprus and Greece. She collected materials from the sites via VHS footage, 35mm photos, and field recordings. The cover image for Hav is from that trip, as are some of the field recordings included on Stena
During her travels, Whitney read Shelley’s Frankenstein for the first time. It hit deep she’d referred to Matchess’ previous release, Sonescent , as “the last minutes in the life of music.” As a sequel to that harrowing moment, and with respect to Shelley, the two new releases feel within and without themselves like creatures of post-mortem assembly, collaged more than birthed. Stena in particular sifts through fragments of once-was, surgically bonded and given electric shock treatment to induce music. Its sequence contains a hidden cover of The Nuns’ “It’s a Dream.”
A lot of Stena was recorded in Miller Beach, Indiana. Other recordings were made in a barn in rural Sweden during the winter of 2022, where Whitney was living alone and working on music while mulling over considerations of biological and symbolic ancestry. The cover image for Stena is a burial cairn photographed while there.
In the fall of 2023, thanks to a grant from DCASE in Chicago, Whitney returned to Sweden to finish both records as an artist-in-residence at Inkonst in Malmö and at Elektronmusikstudion (EMS) in Stockholm. During this time, she assembled the pieces she was working on as a multi-channel A/V installation at Inkonst, and Hav emerged more fully, as a composition for sine waves, marimba, viola, Arp Odyssey and Halldorophone.
Finished mixes for both were later achieved at Electrical Audio in Chicago with Cooper Crain, capturing the spirits and intents in all the times and places enumerated above. Fleetingly and forever, they become the sounds we hear on Hav and Stena . Perhaps the best way to think about these two releases is the idea of DOUBLES: doppelgangers, alter egos, evil twins, mirrors, polarities, impostors, shadows. Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde. Dr. Whitney Johnson and Matchess! The upstanding citizen who is given money to be a researcher and the deranged artist whose passions can do harm to others. Mental disturbances that take the form of Others and, how these selves appear in Whitney’s Lacanian psychoanalysis.
As with 2022’s Sonescent , another way to examine these records is how they resonate in the body. Throughout their gestation, attention was given to the use of certain frequencies as a focused means of transport; the Solfeggio Frequencies, a conception in sound healing, are referenced often in these new works. This is the crux of it as Whitney notes, “It’s about my body being necessary for survival and yet enemy number one. Because that’s the part that is always dying. And my body is also what makes it possible to listen to music, so I love it. I think about sound/music as something that happens in my body rather than something that can be explained with words. Sound is so amazing and insane, the way it is just pressure on air that ripples onto your body, [into] your ears, and then it becomes this entire meaningful system that defines our lives.”

This unique album includes brand new songs along with some classics such as: ‘Nickel Song’, ‘Ruby Tuesday‘, ‘Brand New Key‘. The latter was performed in the style that Melanie had originally envisioned it to be. The pinnacle of this album is arguably the stunning version of the single “Cyclone” which segues into the classic “Candles in the Rain “. Of this album Melanie defiantly said, “I wasn’t making this album for the music industry, I was making it for me - this is who I am, this is what I do, and if you don’t like, too bad.” And the album sounds all the better for it, being as organic as you can get - a singer songwriter and an elite band of musicians doing what they do best…this album is one of the overlooked classics in the Melanie catalogue.

The very first album of its kind dealing with Kilbey’s not unimpressive solo career.
It's no coincidence that Cold Spaghetti, the title of André Ethier's latest solo LP, is sure to recall Fresh Pepper, the seven-piece group he co-helmed with Joseph Shabason to produce a lone, self-titled 2022 album Not only does the supporting cast of musicians on the current recording overlap with the aforementioned band's personnel, there's a key thematic link between the two projects, despite the fact that they contrast each other sharply in most other regards
Fresh Pepper was akin to a late night meal in your favourite restaurant, slinking wearily through ambient funk that glanced in the direction of Donald Fagen's The Nightfly and the Blue Nile's Walk Across The Rooftop. The comparatively raw and vulnerable Cold Spaghetti feels decidedly home-cooked, its more idiosyncratic soundworld is the dinner you made last night that you're looking forward to re-heating the next day at work Straight away, the listener encounters the unconventional seasoning of ramshackle sleigh bells and wayward recorder warble that flow throughout the opening instrumental cut, but it's these surprising aromas that make it taste so good
Where these two records converge is around how their treatment of work as a subject. The publicity around the Fresh Pepper release touted the fact that each band member had worked in the service industry a subject that its lyrics broached many times. Cold Spaghetti has a whole different level of engagement with this topic Its title is a sardonic nod to conditions under which it was conceived during Ethier's lunch breaks at his job
In the late 1990s and early 2000's Ethier led the frayed and raucous Deadly Snakes, making a string of acclaimed recordings with the band before striking out on his own His early solo output maintained some of the Snakes' gnarliness but applied it to a more introspective and delicate approach to songwriting Following 2008's Born of Blue Fog, Ethier took a break from music, resurfacing with a trilogy of solo releases Under Grape Leaves (2017), Croak In The Weeds (2019), and Further Up Island (2021) that featured Sandro Perri as producer. This lull in his musical output, saw him cultivating his other creative pursuit Ethier always had a parallel career as an internationally-exhibited painter He favours oils and often paints on masonite, portraying a variety of subjects with vivid colouration. Where some of his earlier pieces betray a penchant for the grotesque and psychedelic, more recent work adopts techniques that link him to Matisse, later Guston and Hockney while maintaining the wry fantastical signatures he had long examined.
Ethier's current employment is at an art museum in Toronto and between this new job and parenting two children, writing at home, as he had previously, felt as though it was pulling him in too many different directions He started packing a small Casio keyboard to bring to work with him each day.
These various circumstances frame the present collection of songs Ethier's primary instrument for writing had typically been guitar Previously he would first develop the instrumental foundation, later adding singing and lyrics, however for these songs, he mostly developed the text and music separately, only uniting them once he got into the studio After all, he couldn't very well sing out loud at work

Distant Call is a collection of early demos of songs by Trish Keenan and James Cargill that would subsequently appear as finished productions on the albums Haha Sound, Tender Buttons and The Future Crayon.
The album also includes two songs discovered by James after Trish’s passing: “Come Back To Me” and “Please Call To Book”. These were her response to Broadcast’s 2006 ‘Let’s Write A Song’ project, where fans were asked to submit lyrics on a postcard which would then be worked into a finished song.
Distant Call is a closing of the door on Broadcast and will be the last release from the band.

THE HARD QUARTET
‘The Hard Quartet’
The Hard Quartet: Emmett Kelly, a songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist best known for his work in The Cairo Gang and The Double, as well as in the company of artists such as Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Ty Segall, Rob Mazurek, and many more.
Stephen Malkmus, a songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist best known for his work with Pavement, the Jicks, Silver Jews, Straw Dogs, and eponymously.
The Hard Quartet is a band. But what is a band? A band, perhaps, can be thought of as a body, a corpus, in which physically discrete lifeforms comprise a chimera that shrieks with one voice. In this particular band, which is one of millions in the world today, four players selflessly merge, become musical, and emit rock ‘n’ roll that is familiar but new, warm but icy, melodic but Sphinx-like in its seductive and subtle riddles… essentially, The Hard Quartet has leveled, cultivated, and made lush an entirely new steppe in the ecosystem of guitar-bass-drums-voice agriculture.
THE HARD QUARTET ARE EMMETT KELLY, STEPHEN MALKMUS, MATT SWEENEY, AND JIM WHITE.

Matt Sweeney, a songwriter, guitarist, producer and vocalist best known for his work with Chavez, Superwolf, his music for Red Dead Redemption 2 and his guitar work in the company of a panoply of artists from Guided by Voices and Cat Power to Johnny Cash and Adele.
Jim White, a drummer and songwriter best known for his work with Dirty Three, Xylouris White, eponymously, and with such stalwarts as Guy Picciotto, Cat Power, Bill Callahan and Venom P. Stinger.

SELLING POINTS
• Debut solo record from Geordie Greep, 1/3 of black midi
• NYC residency (to be announced) in September ahead of album release, followed by a full US tour in early 2025
“Music can be so much more than learning to play the same as everybody else. It can be anything you want.”
Geordie’s debut solo album boasts a brand of high quality, all-embracing alternative pop fun, walking the line between the ridiculous and brilliant with a teflon-coated aplomb.
How the record came about is a thing to marvel at. Over thirty session musicians were involved in its making, on two continents. Greep says, “Half of the tracks were done in Brazil, with local musicians pulled together at the last minute. They’d never heard anything I’d done before, they were just interested in the demos I’d made. The tracking was all done in one, maybe two days.”
Street life is all around The New Sound: the listener is thrown into a world of cafes, bars, rented rooms, cabarets, and strange museums. Here we see our heroes carry out a series of naughty assignments, military cosplay, or socio-economic triumphs. The lines between parody and sermon are often blurred. The urbane romantic fantasy of single ‘Holy Holy’ tells the story of an imaginary liaison in a nightclub, soundtracked by ’noughties indie chords and bravura Latin big band arrangements - including a three-piano attack.
Brass, wah-wah pedal and bass stabs, choruses and polyrhythms, all fizz and tumble around the place creating a sense of excitement and expectation. Tracks often oscillate from whispers to shouts and start and end on a bang.
The spirit of Greep’s increasingly febrile and furtive soliloquies conjure up both Franks (Zappa & Sinatra), with a side of Scott Walker.

The Devil Wears Prada
DATE: OCTOBER 4, 2024
If you didn’t have Christian metalcore on your top of the 2009 charts bingo card, you might be excused…but that gives you an idea of how eagerly awaited With Roots Above and Branches Below was, and how well it delivered the goods. Dayton band The Devil Wears Prada had built their audience through performing (most notably on the 2008 and 2009 Warped tours) and by some video airplay on MTV, but this release blew away everybody’s expectations, going to #11 on the Billboard Top 200 and commanding the #1 position on the Top Independent Albums, Top Hard Rock Albums, and Top Christian Albums charts. The key was, in the words of vocalist Daniel Hranica, their “darker, heavier, and more epic” sound, as crazed verses alternate with anthemic choruses to create a disorienting thrill ride of a record. Add to that the foreboding album art by noted heavy metal artist Daniel Seagrave, and With Roots Above and Branches Below lives up to its title, where up is down and down is up. Our vinyl release comes in metallic gold vinyl, with a printed inner sleeve featuring lyrics. Buckle up!

STREET DATE: OCTOBER 4, 2024
Any album that takes its title from a Keith Richards quote (“Friction, baby” was his response to an interviewer asking him what the secret was behind the durability of his partnership with Mick Jagger) has a lot going for it from the get-go…and a certain responsibility to live up to the legacy of the Glimmer Twins. Thankfully, this 1996 album from the celebrated New Orleans alternative rock band Better Than Ezra doesn’t monkey (man) around. On the heels of their success with Deluxe, BTE actually had a real recording budget for the first time, and, with the help of producer Don Gehman (R.E.M., Hootie and the Blowfish), they successfully merged songwriter Kevin Griffin’s Southern boy pop with the heavy guitar sound of the era to form a college radio wet dream of a record spearheaded by the hits “King of New Orleans” and “Desperately Wanting.” Tan vinyl pressing complete with hidden track, with printed inner sleeve. Fully authorized by the band…Ezralites, rejoice!

The late rock’n’roll iconoclast Sean Bonniwell is famous among garage rockers and proto punks alike for his leadership of the incomparable Music Machine and their 1966 nugget, “Talk Talk.” Now, in cooperation with the Bonniwell estate, Real Gone Music is exploring a side of the enigmatic singer-songwriter that very few know about. After the demise of the Machine, Bonniwell briefly moved into soundtrack work and oversaw the scores to a handful of cult “B” movies, among them 1970’s Night of the Witches and 1971’s Day of the Wolves. These two are now being issued for the very first time by Real Gone Music, lovingly remastered from the original source tapes for top-notch sound, and presented on standalone vinyl LPs featuring original promotional artwork. Both scores are also available on one CD, along with detailed notes as to their creation by reissue producer Alec Palao. If you’re a fan of the sights ‘n’ sounds of vintage grindhouse cinema, you’ve hit paydirt!
SEAN BONNIWELL: Night of the Witches—ORIGINAL
(LIMITED EMERALD GREEN VINYL EDITION)
1970’s Night of The Witches is a bizarre, acidtinged horror fantasy, with death dances, corrupt preachers, and psychedelic priestesses. The exceptionally groovy soundtrack features heavy dollops of fuzz guitar, organ, and funky backbeat, with four vocal numbers including the darkly downbeat, Bowie-esque “Down to the Sky,” which is already enjoying club spins in Europe. Never available in any format…pressed on emerald green vinyl limited to 900 copies!
SEAN BONNIWELL: Day of the Wolves
Starring Richard Egan, 1971’s The Day of the Wolves is a solid cult classic, and an early example of the “heist” movie, whereby a team of organized criminals take over a whole town in order to ransack it. While mostly instrumental, Bonniwell’s rock score for Wolves is consistently noted in reviews of the film as one of its defining aspects, and will definitely whet the appetite of spaghetti western Morricone fans. The lengthy opening cut is a tour de force of edgy guitar riffs, anguished vocals and compelling breakbeats. Pressed in orange and red “bad blood” vinyl limited to 900 copies…never before available!

What do Frankenberry, Richard Hell, a cat named Sloopy, and Bill Haley and His Comets have in common? You can find out with Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records’ first-ever reissue of the longlost Halloween classic Songs Our Mummy Taught Us! This one-of-a-kind, super-rare LP was the creation of voiceover artist Bob McFadden–best-known as the voice of Frankenberry, the Thundercats’ pal Snarf, Cool McCool, and countless others–and the mysterious “Dor,” otherwise known as singersongwriter (and America’s best-selling poet!) Rod McKuen. Rock-and-roll and beat culture met horror headfirst on this off-the-wall album, with McFadden taking the role of a not-so-scary Mummy and McKuen voicing a blasé beatnik on its best-known song, the novelty hit “The Mummy.” According to McKuen, none other than Bill Haley’s Comets played on the rocking track! But that’s not all. McFadden’s Mummy also put a new spin on “Shake, Rattle, and Roll” and “Hound Dog,” while McKuen’s original song “The Beat Generation” would inspire Richard Hell’s “Blank Generation.” Other satiric targets on this frightfully fun LP include exotica (“Noisy Village”), surf music (“Bingo,” a riff on “Tequila” with McFadden as the bingo caller), and celebrity culture (“The Beverly Hills Telephone Directory Cha-Cha-Cha”). The original 1959 Brunswick album artwork has been meticulously recreated for this new reissue, and an insert features new liner notes by The Second Disc’s Joe Marchese. It’s all been remastered by Mike Milchner at SonicVision and pressed on clear with orange pumpkin swirl vinyl limited to 750 copies. To miss Songs Our Mummy Taught Us would be, well, a grave mistake!
NORMA TANEGA WALKIN’ MY CAT NAMED DOG
(Green & Purple “What We Do in the Shadows” Vinyl Edition)
STREET DATE: OCTOBER 4, 2024
The theme song “You’re Dead” to the FX show What We Do in the Shadows has fostered a new appreciation for the singular talent that was Norma Tanega. And it’s high time, too...Norma was discovered while singing to Catskill summer campers by producer Herb Bernstein, who brought her to Four Seasons songwriter Bob Crewe. Crewe signed her to his New Voice label, and success was instantaneous: the title song to Walkin’ My Cat Named Dog went to #22 on the charts. But, despite the album’s folk-pop trappings, Norma Tanega was not an artist destined to stay at the top of the charts for long; her voice was unconventional, and her songs were too idiosyncratic, not sticking to typical song structure or even meter (for example, “No Stranger Am I” is set to a 5/4 time signature). In fact, Tanega’s songs were so unusual that she had to hire session musicians to play them on the North American tour she took to support the album instead of her erstwhile back-up band The Outsiders! Upon returning, she then embarked on a British tour that was to change her life forever; there she met Dusty Springfield, and the two embarked on an artistic and romantic relationship that prompted Tanega to move to London for five years. After the pair broke up, Tanega wound up moving to California and shifted to playing percussion in more experimental settings, following the wayward muse that makes Walkin’ My Cat Named Dog such an entrancing and unique listening experience to this day. We’re pressing a green and purple vinyl edition to honor What We Do in the Shadows as it enters the final season of a great, six-year run…and to give folks another chance to hear the amazing and haunting sounds of Norma Tanega!

MUSIC FROM THE ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK
(25th Anniversary 2-LP Neo(n) Green Vinyl Edition)
STREET DATE: OCTOBER 4, 2024
Every decade or so a science fiction film comes along that captures the Zeitgeist and simultaneously casts a searchlight into the murk of what’s to come. Such a film was The Matrix Released in 1999 to a public already grappling with huge technological change and subject to Y2K hysteria whipped up by the media, The Matrix wove such au courant tropes as Japanese animé, Hong Kong martial arts films, cyperpunk sci-fi, and hacker hero worship into a tale of druggy paranoia whose vision of a grim future marked with universal surveillance and pathological interconnectedness actually looks less paranoid by the day. And its soundtrack was similarly forward-looking. Instead of offering the blues-based, heavy metal rock that might have populated the score had the movie been made a decade before, The Matrix tapped into the new, breakbeat electronic sounds making inroads into popular music. The result was a propulsive audio ride perfectly mated to the film’s cinematographic “bullet time” innovations, a doom-laden, neck-snapping blend of stoner metal, hip hop and electronica. Now, on the occasion of the film’s 25th anniversary, Real Gone Music is proud to present the original soundtrack to The Matrix in a gatefold package featuring stills from the original film production. And the pressing is—what else?—neo(n) green!

OVERVIEW
Sung Tongs is Animal Collective’s fifth studio album originally released in 2004 and features Avey Tare and Panda Bear. For its 20th anniversary, the 2xLP has been pressed on color vinyl for the first time, Canary and Ruby, and is housed in a gatefold jacket.
Sung Tongs marked the beginning of a prolific five year period in which Animal Collective went on to release their game-changing albums Feels (2005), Strawberry Jam (2007) and Merriweather Post Pavilion (2009). At the time of Sung Tongs’ release, Rolling Stone called it “one of the more creative and accomplished records you’ll hear this year,” adding, “Their songs cackle with soulful eccentricity while dazzling you with deceptive chops and improvised manipulations.” Pitchfork later named it one of the best albums of the 2000s, raving, “Sung Tongs is an emotionally thrilling record, impossibly giddy and fully-charged with big, raucous enthusiasm: Acoustic strums and wild, flailing voices (including some mind-blowing harmonies by vocalists Avey Tare and Panda Bear) coalesce into something sublimely weird and undeniably beautiful.”

gore gore girls GET THE GORE
BLOODSHOT BRINGS THE MOTOR-CITY GIRLRAGE-ROCK CLASSIC BACK IN AN ENHANCED BARREL SELECT EDITION, APPROVED BY AMY GORE.
Born by the pale blue glow of “Hullabaloo,” lullabied by the River Rouge Stamping Plant and honed to a shiv point by midnight B-movies, Detroit’s Gore Gore Girls’ come-hither sneer draws a sonic line (in thick, black eyeliner, babies) from the Girl Group ground zero of the Brill Building to the legendary punk Mecca of the Grande Ballroom.
Amy, guitarist, vocalist and the Gore to the fore, formed the Girls out of an uncontrollable and perhaps unhealthy fascination with the style and sass of classic ‘60s girl groups and the convulsing sonic energy of an industrial American city disintegrating. Being a fellow member of the Sisterhood of the Gretsch, Marlene (fondly referred to as The Hammer—listen up and you’ll hear why) signed on soon thereafter on the lead guitar. Bassist Carol Anne Schumacher (who also finds time to play in The Detroit Cobras and Reigning Sound) and drummer Nicky Styxx round out the Gore lineup on the album.
Bloodshot has deemed Get The Gore worthy of the Barrel Select brand, recognizing it as one of the most potent picks in our cask-strength catalog. CUMGIRL8 the 8th cumming
Like a scantily clad Creature from the Black Lagoon, Manhattan four-piece cumgirl8 has emerged from their primordial goo, resurrecting today in striking full color. After coming-of-age with their introductory self-titled EP (2020), experiencing their own end with their RIPcumgirl8 EP (2021) , and witnessing a twisted vision of the afterlife through their first EP on 4AD phantasea pharm (2023), the band is now on the cusp of their 8th cumming by way of their long-awaited debut LP of that name, out October 4. . A product of the experiences they’ve had across their many lives, their discography is a warped, fucked up ‘coat of many colors,’ with their forthcoming record being no different. “We want people to be afraid of what’s coming.” Described as a utopian, chaotic “Greta Thunberg fever dream,” cumgirl8’s newest album, the 8th cumming, is rooted in a philosophy close to the band’s heart: cyberfeminism, which addresses the relationship between human and machine, nature and technology. Historically flexing their political muscles via outspoken activism (including protesting SXSW 2024), innuendo-ridden lyrics, adventurous stage presentation aided by costumes created in-house by the band, and merch table Plan C (Medication Abortion) pills, this current version of the band has fundamentally taken things up a notch, unafraid to introduce listeners to complicated themes all while exploring their creative boundaries and looking inward.
As experimental and willing to poke fun of themselves as ever, cumgirl8’s multi-faceted nature is a key cornerstone of the 8th cumming. While, to some, cumgirl8 is no more than a group of one-dimensional sex-toys and trolls on the Net, this record proves that they are much more; specifically, that they are a badass, soundboard-wielding, and forward-thinking collective with an affinity for daring storytelling and musical mayhem.

Since forming in 2000, toe have synthesized everything from pop, post- and math-rock, jazz, R&B, and electronic into one of the most distinct sounds in rock music. Their debut LP the book about my idle plot on a vague anxiety (2005) left an unmistakable imprint across the splintered worlds of instrumental and experimental music, exploding the tenets of postrock with writing and performances that channel the intensity of hardcore.
toe have kept the same lineup since their inception. Yamazaki Hirokazu’s acoustic and Mino Takaaki’s electric guitars often juxtapose one another against the backdrop of drummer Kashikura Takashi’s unmatched sense of feel and rhythm, specializing in phrases that trick the listener with unanticipated backbeats and climactic gasps. Bassist Yamane Satoshi lends depth to the staccato, explorative melodies, gluing them to, and making sense of Takashi’s unique style.
The debut’s follow-up, For Long Tomorrow (2009), was a breakthrough that explored their pop and jazz DNA, as well cementing comparisons to post-rock forebears and contemporaries like Tortoise. For Long Tomorrow also produced one of toe’s better known songs in “グッドバイ / Goodbye,” a re-recording of the 2006 track from the New Sentimentality EP, this time featuring Japanese pop singer Asako Toki.
2015’s Hear You was dened by its loosening of the rhythmically frenzied work that predated it. Understated instrumentation stretched and smeared style and genre spectra, as heard in the piano-laden “オトトタイミングキミト”; the drumless rap on “Time Goes”; and the tabla, synth, and chanting in “G.O.O.D L.U.C.K.” Although such experimentation was always foreshadowed by the band’s early EPs songs, ideas we forgot (2003) and The Future Is Now (2012)—and later echoed by Our Latest Number (2018)—Hear You is still subdued, a marked departure from the band’s prior work.
NOW I SEE THE LIGHT (2024), toe’s fourth full-length album, is a bridge between the experimental restraint of their later work and the explosive abandon of their earlier output. From the opening tracks, toe balance serpentine passages against meditative repetition. On “LONELINESS WILL SHINE,” “サニーボーイ ラプソディ,” and “NOW I SEE THE LIGHT,” Hirokazu reprises his role as part-time vocalist, breaking the band yet further from the instrumental work that formerly dened them. As a whole, NOW I SEE THE LIGHT closes the loop between early and late toe, giving them a clean slate for their new outlook.

Formed in 1998, toe is a Japanese music group long revered in post-rock circles, while their song structures and dynamics have taken on elements from all styles of music, ranging from math-rock, jazz, pop, and R&B.
The vast majority of the music is instrumental and features the swift, agile drumming of drummer Kashikura Takashi. The band is also known for melodic, clean guitar, often employing the juxtaposition of electric and acoustic. While the compositions feature the repetition of typical rock motifs, the subtle changes in beat and rhythm form a unique rhythmic dialect. The band has consistently expanded their sound throughout their musical tenure by incorporating singing, rhodes piano, mallet percussion, and electronic production elements.

ELECTRO THROWDOWN
Sci-Fi Inter-Planetary Electro Attack on Planet Earth 1982-89
4th October 2024
Soul Jazz Records’ new collection, ‘Electro Throwdown - Sci-Fi Inter-Planetary Electro Attack on Planet Earth 1982-89’, is a journey into the outer reaches of electro, a galactic roller-coaster ride of turbo-charged sci-fi grooveology.
The album is comprised of mainly private-press and independent label electro jams of the highest calibre (with some as rare as space ships landing on Mars) all created in the 1980s, at a time when a vocoder, a Roland TR-808 drum machine and a groove was all that was needed to get the party started.
With a few notable exceptions (Michael Jonzun’s Jonzun Crew and The Packman) the album features mainly under-the-radar killer tracks from a host of one-off artists and back-room electronic pioneers – including Pretty Tony, Planet Detroit (James McCauley, aka Maggotron) and Rich Cason – who together helped shape the sound of electro across the USA from Miami to New York, Los Angeles and beyond during the 1980s.
This album is released on super-loud double vinyl, packaged in a gatefold sleeve complete with full sleeve notes (from Derek Walmsley of The Wire), plus download code and digital.

2. The Troids - Boogie Troids (5.49)

THE WILD FEATHERS • SIRENS •
How would you define The Wild Feathers? Some may immediately check a box for Americana – and they wouldn’t be wrong. Others may lean on a version of rock: Country-rock, folk-rock, heartland rock. They’d all be right, too. Blues? A Southern flare? Occasional punk attitude? It’s all in there. Now, it’s time to hop on the bus and sing along.
The longtime Nashville band returns this year with Sirens, a new LP of road-worn, sharply-woven tales chronicling a life worth living, love worth holding and the hardearned lessons found along the ride. To cut the follow-up to 2021 album Alvarado – the band’s debut on independent label New West Records – The Wild Feathers decamped from Music City, U.S.A., to Los Angeles for sessions with producer Shooter Jennings (known for his work with Brandi Carlile, Turnpike Troubadours and Tanya Tucker, among others) at Dave’s Room in North Hollywood.
Listen intently and without genre in mind. Because when the so-called Sirens make their sound on this new album, don’t worry about how to define it. Just enjoy the ride.

Jonah Yano Jonah Yano & The Heavy Loop
Jonah Yano is an artist’s artist. A producer and songwriter who has collaborated on projects by peers like Fousheé, Mustafa and Charlotte Day Wilson, he’s also co-written alongside Helena Deland, Ouri, Clairo and Monsune on his own releases. Yano is always shifting the unstable ground his songs rest on, revising it, making it anew. Often his compositions are warm, soulful, and hazily impressionistic, but he prefers to resist easy genre categorization, flitting, instead, between jazz and folk traditions, R&B and hip-hop, rock and ambient and electronic. On portrait of a dog — the 2023 album he made with frequent collaborators BADBADNOTGOOD, praised in Pitchfork for its “cryptic, diaristic intimacy” — the Japanese-Canadian musician weaved his lilting, wistful voice into a harvest-hued mosaic of heartbreak and family memory, for which he recorded hours of conversations and digitized thousands of old photographs to wrestle with his grandfather’s encroaching dementia. The album featured guest contributions from Slauson Malone and Sea Oleena, with string arrangements by Eliza Niemi, Leland Whitty, and Yano. On Jonah Yano & the Heavy Loop, his forthcoming record out Oct. 4, Yano has once again upended his musical direction, crafting an experimental, chimerical album with the live ensemble-turned-studio band (Christopher Edmonson, Benjamin Maclean, Leighton Harrell, Felix Fox-Pappas, and Raiden Louie) that he’s been painstakingly scouting for the last three years. Yano has conceived of this as a kind of double-record; the anchoring song, The Heavy Loop, is a 30-minute feat of improvisation that sees the band leaning into noise music and free sound, and constitutes the “raw materials” of the album’s freewheeling soundscapes. “Concentrate,” the lead single, smoulders over subdued keys, bright guitar arpeggios, jazzy drums, and clarinet work from Clairo, whom Yano and his band opened for during her 2022 EU/UK tour. “If souvenir is about what I feel, and portrait of a dog is about what I remember or want to remember, then this album is about what I think,” says Yano. “And maybe that’s the difference.”
Though he now resides in Montreal, Yano was born in Hiroshima in 1994, and emigrated to Vancouver when he was four. He grew up listening to blues guitar players and classic rock music, and after learning the piano under his grandmother’s tutelage as a child, picked up the guitar in a “School of Rock-esque” middle school program. He started recording demos on his cellphone in 2016, when he moved to Toronto and joined up with the city’s burgeoning underground music scene. Many of the people he met and jammed with there — Monsune, Jacques Greene, Joseph L’Étranger, BBNG — became his eventual collaborators, and taught him technical skills he would use to record his first real songs. His friendship with the Toronto-based experimental music duo MONEYPHONE culminated with a song they made together called “On Lock,” his first ever feature, and Yano released his first solo single later that year, “Rolex, the Ocean.” “It’s important for me to interface with what’s happening in whichever localized area I’m in,” says Yano. “I always want my music to reflect where I am as much as what I’m trying to say.”
In his room and the home studios of friends, he began working on a suite of songs that would form his début project, the breezy, six-track Nervous EP (2019), which blended jazz, hip-hop, and R&B influences with subtle electronica. It introduced Yano as a soulful, genre-agnostic talent with an ear for melody and intimate songwriting, and he followed it up later that year with a lush cover of The Majestics’ “Key to Love (Is Understanding),” which the original Memphis funk/soul band praised as
“well done with [a] slight personal twist.” Yano’s well-reviewed début album, souvenir, expanded the panoramic sonic landscape of his first EP, seamlessly weaving together drum’n’bass, rock, ambient, soul, jazz, and more. His free association-based songwriting introduced many of the themes that would prove central to his work — memory, family histories, the nuances of interpersonal relationships, identity fractured by diaspora — and the record included a reworked version of a song called “shoes,” which Yano’s then-estranged father, Tatsuya Muraoka, had recorded 25 years before their reconciliation. In Japanese, Muraoka sang about a pair of shoes he bought for his child son, and Yano, now older, filled it in by questioning his father’s absence from his childhood due to his parents’ separation: a duet traversing oceans and decades. He released the album on Father’s Day in 2020.
Since then, Yano’s work has earned praise in major international music publications, including Billboard, The Fader, CLASH, Exclaim, Complex, and Pitchfork. He’s been featured on NTS Radio, CBC Music’s The Intro, NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday, and performed on COLORS twice. He was twice nominated for the SOCAN Songwriting Prize, and has garnered the attention of Gilles Peterson, Benji B, and the late Virgil Abloh. He’s played the Montreal International Jazz Festival, the EFG London Jazz Festival, and toured Japan for ten solo shows in 2023. In 2024, he released the little italy demos, a three-song tape he made with his neighbour in Montreal, Le Ren.
"Warm, wistful, and quaint all at once" - HYPEBEAST
"Softly lit tones with a jazz influence, his fuzzy, lo-fi sense of soul touches upon the intimate at every turn" - CLASH

Portico Quartet, Monument - GONDLP043BIO
Monument is one of Portico Quartet’s most accessible, direct records to date. If Terrain addressed the darker side of how Duncan Bellamy and Jack Wyllie made sense of the pandemic, then Monument resonates as an ode to better times. If not quite a dance record, it nonetheless pulses with an energy, radiance and a scalpel sharp focus. Jack Wyllie explains: “It’s possibly our most direct album to date. It’s melodic, structured and there’s an economy to it that is very efficient. There’s not much searching or wastage within the music itself, it is all finalised ideas, precisely sculpted and presented as a polished artefact.” Bellamy expands “Monument sits somewhere between our albums Portico Quartet and Art in the Age of Automation. It has perhaps a more overtly electronic edge to its sound – there are more synthesisers and electronic elements than we have used before and the music is often streamlined and rhythmic”.
Portico Quartet, Art in the Age of Automation - GONDLP018
Art In The Age Of Automation finds the band building on the sound world they first explored with their eponymous 2012 release Portico Quartet, mixing the cinematic minimalism, that first made their name, with electronic and ambient textures alongside a welcome return for Jack’s ethereal saxophone and Duncan’s unique mixture of live and electronic drums as well of course as the band’s signature sound, the chiming other worldy tones of the hang drum. It’s hard music to define, as Jack acknowledges. “Our sound falls between many genres, jazz, electronic music even minimalism in places, but naturally it’s an amalgamation of everything we’ve listened to”. And as you would expect from a band that have evolved with each recording, this is no barren retread of the past, instead it represents another step forward sonically and musically in the band’s ongoing evolution.
Matthew Halsall, When the World Was One - GONDLP010BIO
When The World Was One is something of a companion piece to Matthew Halsall’s 2012 album Fletcher Moss Park (much of the music was written at the same time) but draws more explicitly on Halsall’s love of spiritual jazz and Eastern music as well as his own studies in meditation and travels in Japan. Beautifully recorded at Hasall’s favourite studio, 80 Hertz in Manchester, and engineered by Brendan Williams and George Atkins it features the recording debut of Halsall’s large ensemble, The Gondwana Orchestra, which utilises the exotic flavours of harp, koto and bansuri flute and Eastern scales to create a global palate for Halsall’s life-affirming sounds.

Phi-Psonics The Cradle (Deluxe Edition)
Double Black BioVinyl, in Pantone printed reverse board gatefold sleeve, packed in a resealable protective sleeve.
Gondwana Records are thrilled to present this prepress of The Cradle (Deluxe Edition), pressed on double black BioVinyl, from the sublimely beautiful and immersive LA deep-jazz masters Phi-Psonics
Phi-Psonics is a meditative, deeply soulful jazz group from Los Angeles, led by bassist Seth Ford-Young and featuring Sylvain Carton on woodwinds, Mitchell Yoshida on electric piano, and Josh Collazo on drums. Their beautiful music draws on jazz and classical influences together with Ford-Young’s own musical experiences, relationships, and his introduction to spirituality, yoga and philosophy at a young age. Along the way they create something uniquely their own, sharing beautiful landscapes for your spirit to roam freely within.
The Cradle, wasn’t written specifically for an album, originally Ford-Young was just writing down what was coming through. As time went by and the album began to take shape, the world situation seemed to be getting darker and his compositions aim to offer hope as a response to the negative influences that abound today. Remarkably for such a beautiful sounding record, it was recorded at the composer’s home, rather than in a studio, but the relaxed nature of this process gives the music an airy lightness that propels the music to some magical spaces.
Originally self-released on vinyl in a limited run just as the world went into lockdown, The Cradle reached Matthew Halsall (founder of Gondwana Records) when he was looking for music for his Worldwide FM show and he was blown away, hearing a kindred spirit at work. Halsall explains:
“Phi-Psonics make beautiful, humble and honest music, it’s not showy, but it has a deep vibe that will elevate your mind and soul if you let it. When we heard The Cradle we reached out and are really super delighted to welcome Seth and his band to our label”. Whereas for Ford Young: “Connecting with Matthew and the Gondwana records family has been a light in the darkness of the last years - to have my music make connections even as we are more isolated.”

Australia has a knack for producing oddball and idiosyncratic bands who defy expectations. The Peep Tempel is no exception, they've cultivated a dedicated following and achieved cult status.
Their beloved second album, Tales, released in 2014, is a raw and energetic portrayal of modernAustralia, filled with cynical wit, powerful guitar riffs, and a touch of absurdity.
This 2024 reissue is available in both standard edition black vinyl and limited edition neon pink vinyl.

MEMORIALS MEMORIAL WATERSLIDES
OUT OCTOBER 4, 2024
‘Memorial Waterslides’ is the debut album from MEMORIALS, the duo consisting of Verity Susman and Matthew Simms (previously of Electrelane and Wire). This is an otherworldly, surrealist pop record that is both timeless and timely, displaying a rare mix of classic songwriting and avant-garde attitudes.
MEMORIALS create panoramic pop that draws on both the familiar and the strange, while also treading new ground. With their playful and experimental style, combined with a love of good tunes, they sit comfortably alongside Broadcast, Portishead, Arthur Russell, The Velvet Underground, Yo La Tengo and Tortoise.
The album is awash with imagery evoking a lost future, a veiled present and a daydreamed past, each song playing a role in creating a swirling, widescreen atmosphere, the listener taken along for the ride. Produced entirely by the two of them, the sound of the record was inspired by the reel-to-reel tape experiments they first played around with onstage as they began to develop their multi-layered recordings for live performances as a duo.
Following their acclaimed 2023 soundtracks ‘Women Against The Bomb’ and ‘Tramps!’, a European tour with Stereolab (they’ve been called “Stereolab’s evil twin”) and a new music commission from the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Verity and Matthew arrived at MEMORIALS in reverse, escaping their soundtracking day jobs to create cosmic journeys through the garden shed into psychedelic rock, far-out folk and wild analogue electronics.

Cindy –Swan Lake Tough Love
12”
TLV173LP 2024-10-04 5055869551045
Cindy is to release a new six song EP called Swan Lake on 4th October via Tough Love. The title isn’t a nod to the folktale or ballet in any real way, but to the fact that it all has ended up in the collective imagination as an object, vaguely recognizable, a little suggestive, and mostly blank. Karina Gill, Cindy’s songwriter, likes to make use of that kind of resonance to connect sound and experience.
The six songs on this EP continue the stripped-down habits of previous Cindy releases, while adding a few departures and left-turns. Cindy likes to work at the essentials and the elements here say exactly what’s needed. In other ways, these songs present a soft filigree that’s unusual for their recordings. Oli Lipton (Now, Violent Change) on guitar and Will Smith (Now) on bass play counterpoint melodies to Gill’s structures. Staizsh Rodrigues (Children Maybe Later, Almond Joy, Peace Frog) sings vocal harmonies that both offset and deepen Gill’s voice and delivery. There are playful drums by Mike Ramos (Tony Jay, Sad Eyed Beatniks) and coolly elaborate guitar lines from Stanley Martinez (Famous Mammals, Violent Change, Non Plus Temps).
Gill’s songs strike this balance too: almost nonchalant reporting tied up in unexpected knots. A ride in an elevator connects up with questions about peace and/or the nature of things; the title track wonders about associative thinking and associative feeling; The Bell is an account of one of those times when everything makes sense but you can’t explain it; and there’s the scene of a party viewed with admiration for how friends can love each other.

Smote –A Grand Stream Rocket Recordings
2LP Pink & Black Vinyl LAUNCH359 2024-10-04 5056321673442
Last Summer, Daniel Foggin, guitarist, writer and chief architect of Smote, uprooted himself from his usual home in Newcastle to live and work in a farmhouse in Kelso, near the Scottish border. “Through the summer when I was working up there, myself and Rob (Smote drummer) would finish work and go sit by a small river and have a couple of beers in the sun, and it was the best thing ever” he relates “So I guess the philosophy is that to some people it looks like any other stream, but to us it was supreme happiness.” Hence came the title of the fourth Smote album proper, one largely recorded in this same farmhouse – A Grand Stream. It’s an album that’s the truest incarnation thus far of his vision for this band – a full-scale psychic voyage into the ether and a drone-andrepetition-fuelled series of incantations that takes simple, primal ingredients and utilises them for the purposes of aural sorcery, summoning spectres and revelations aplenty in its wake.
Whilst the folk-tinged, ceremonial ambience that Smote have made their trademark is present and correct here, utilising Swedish classic psych heaviness and Swans textures as fuel for the ominous rhythms of ‘Coming Out Of A Hedge Backwards’ and the uplifting cadences of opener ‘Sitting Stone Part 1’, Foggin and his cohorts also waste little time exploring new more eerie and ethereal textures and dimensions. The meditative ‘Chantry’ in particular sees them gravitate towards a headspace akin to the drone-based epiphanies of Kali Malone’s ‘Does Spring Hide Its Joy’ filtered through the transcendent amplifier worship of ‘Earth 2’. A Grand Steam takes this band – one who’ve always eschewed the cliches and stumbling blocks of all contemporary psych rock in favour of their own unique and wyrd vision – into a realm in which they transcend through willpower and skill alike into something preternaturally thrilling, mapping out their own crepuscular new territory Question is; dare you step over the threshold?
