Katie von Schleicher A Little Touch of Schleicher in the Night
black 140g LP
THE CRITICAL PRAISE FOR THIS ALBUM CONTINUES ALL BELOW SINCE NOVEMBER 2023:
“There’s a wry charm to Von Schleicher’s exquisite songwriting, often underscoring its sincerity but never cheapening its quality”
NPR Tiny Desk Concert premiere, Jan 29, 2024
"Katie Von Schleicher wraps her punchlines (and neuroses) in gossamer melodies delivered by her ethereal vocals and backed by cinematic, string-drenched arrangements and Sam Evian’s lush production an album that unfurls further with every listen"
Brooklyn Vegan's Top 40 Albums of 2023 (#4)
“A low-key revelation It’s an album that fully earns the Harry Nilsson reference in its title, and one that marks her as a major star in sad-sack chamber pop"
Rolling Stone's 40 Best Indie-Rock Albums of 2023 (#17)
"Exquisitely melancholy chamber pop can feel like a lost art these days Not when Katie’s in the house"
Rolling Stone's 100 Best Songs of 2023 (#49, "Cranked")
“The arrangements a menagerie of saxophones, clarinets, and violins with the jaunty bounce of guitar chords walk a tightrope between the schmaltz of a Herb Alpert record and the evocative swell of Brenda Lee’s 'Emotions' It succeeds as party music, the kind that starts jubilantly and lapses into wine-drunk silence" Pitchfork
"The Brooklyn singer/songwriter lets her wit shine through on her fourth album her most sophisticated and wide-ranging album and arguably her freest" Paste
"Von Schleicher’s shoebox cassette recorder days may be in the rearview mirror, but the songs themselves, as well as the disparate songwriting influences, are a large part of what makes A Little Touch of Schleicher in the Night so engaging" PopMatters (PM Pick)
Produced alongside Sam Owens (Sam Evian), A Little Touch of Schleicher in the Night was recorded with a bunch of poker buddies the two accumulated during the pandemic. Lyrically wry and classically lush with strings and horns, it’s a songwriter album that nuzzles up to the Arthur Russell and Kirsty MacColl LPs in one's record collection. In narrowing the gap between her personality and her songwriting, von Schleicher has made her most untroubled album Out now on digital and vinyl via Sipsman.

They Want My Soul: Deluxe More Soul Edition
On August 5, exactly 10 years after its original release, Matador Records is reissuing Spoon’s beloved eighth album, ‘They Want My Soul,’ on all digital platforms, with a 2xLP gatefold vinyl release to follow in the fall. Along with the album’s original 10 tracks—including all-time Spoon classics “Inside Out,” “Do You,” and “Rent I Pay”— ‘They Want My Soul: Deluxe More Soul Edition’ includes 11 demos and alternate versions, almost all of them previously unreleased. The reissue underlines the album’s vaunted place amid one of rock’s most bulletproof catalogs and offers a glimpse at the creative process behind a pivotal moment in the ongoing Spoon story.
It’s one thing for a band to last a long time. But it’s something completely different—and inordinately more difficult—for a band to make very good records for a long time. Spoon is one of those bands. How do they do it? By maintaining dignity in a world hellbent on sucking it out of each and every one of us. By being unafraid to introduce new voices and creative expressions in their work, while never taking a corny left turn just for the sake of it. By knowing when they need to stop and recharge— and when to come back with force. They make it all look easy. But ‘They Want My Soul: Deluxe More Soul Edition’ shows the hard work it takes to achieve greatness every damn time.

OVERVIEW
A collection of early, previously unreleased music recorded at Jason Quever's apartment at 924 Fulton in San Francisco while Cass McCombs was living in Berkeley between 1999-2000.
The Bay Area in the late 90s housed a special community of artists including Papercuts, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Chris Cohen’s Curtains, and Mt. Egypt. The ethos was for maximum integrity and intimacy, and often music would only be shared with close friends. Graffiti writers, skaters and old timers from the 60s were never far away or far from mind.
Always following a mindset of moving forward, ever forward, this was a brief but productive phase in McCombs’ career before he hit the road and traveled the country, eventually landing in New York City, where he would make the music that would come to reach a wider audience. What’s so remarkable about Seed Cake On Leap Year is how vibrant and raw these songs remain, full of insight and wonder, in conversation with everything yet to come.

THRILL JOCKEY
Known for the monolithic force of their music and their inventive production techniques, The Body’s albums are benchmarks in the expansion and evolution of heavy music. Tightly packed with deceptively nuanced arrangements and exhilarating, challenging distortion, their compositions are possessed of an unmistakably singular sound. The Crying Out of Things is no exception; a culmination of all that The Body have done before, highlighting their mastery of dynamic and monumental music that pushes toward the unmistakable sound of oblivion. The Body have produced a wealth of groundbreaking collaborations with the likes of Full of Hell, Thou, Uniform, BIG|BRAVE, OAA, and Dis Fig. The duo’s benchmark albums have, over the past 2 decades, changed the perceptions and directions of heavy music. The Crying Out of Things’ embrace of noise is a comprehensive display of the multitude of expressions possible with abrasive sound, a skill that The Body have pioneered and refined. “I think for us the key to the way we use noise is, it’s not the only element,” says Buford “You’ve gotta really listen if you’re into noise. But it also has to have dynamics. Where, say, BIG|BRAVE (who have a similar ethos) expresses it in this more intellectual, minimalist way, The Body comes from an instinctual, maximalist way. We’re trying to cover it ALL.” The Body stand alone in their ability to connect disparate influences and collaborators into a wholly original, potent and singular work. Alongside producer/engineer Seth Manchester, the duo’s voracious and omnivorous musical appetites have pushed the studio as an instrument into new avenues to conjure profound feelings from the music. The Crying Out of Things cements The Body’s place as a leader of heavy new music, their boundless creativity, their defining ability to convey anguish, created with a visceral clarity to devastating impact.

Brooklyn based Liturgy is Hunter Hunt Hendrix, Greg Fox, Tyler Dusenbury, and Bernard Gann Aesthethica, their second album and third release, shows the band exploring, in greater depth, themes initially touched on by their critically acclaimed debut album, Renihilation. The band used every instrument, literal or figurative, to produce meaning and intensity, disregarding the genre boundaries of black metal, hardcore and experimental music.
On Renihilation, Liturgy made use of simple song structures, and concentrated on sustaining a blindingly high intensity level from start to finish. Aesthethica, a more controlled and polyvalent effort, finds the band operating at multiple levels and using more varied forms. The music is both elaborately crafted and chaotically performed. Songs often begin in the form of a simple chant or hypnotic abstraction, then evolve into something dense and complex. A constant sensitivity to the states of attention that different musical patterns activate and foster, yields a paradoxical result: the more complex the music, the simpler the message. Cycling through the fundamental modes of being: stasis, chaos, repetition and entelechy, Aesthethica is a metaphorical exercise in affirmation.
The record is a unified whole. A major concern, sonically and lyrically, is the question of what it is to be meaningful, and how intensity relates to emotion or affect. Many of the songs activate and manipulate cliches relating to heroism, tragedy, hope, and so on by connecting black metal techniques to the spirit of film score writing (Vangelis, Badalamenti) and post-Romanticism (Scriabin, Sibelius). “High Gold” presents a vision of apocalypse, “Harmonia” presents a judgment on the meaning of life, and so on. The resulting collection of songs, at once, embodies and transcends these tropes. The music is supersaturated with lofty melodies and lyrics, bursting with frenzied execution, and builds to a boiling point of chaos, distorting all meaning and distilling to reveal the raw core of pure sonic joy. Liturgy surrounds these fractured islands of meaning with a sea of a-signifying ritual repetition and sound (Branca, Sleep, Lightning Bolt). Tear at the seams of the straitjacket of ordinary life, release the energy from the field of potentiality that it binds, enter the realm of the good and the beautiful, so commands Aesthethica.

“Liturgy have taken black metal’s primal scream literally and applied it to an experimental framework…’High Gold’ is a furious, repetitious, and dissonant salvo carved out the same mindset that has carried fellow New Yorkers Krallice to acclaimed heights. Ultimately, Liturgy’s ‘High Gold’ rules.” - Decibel
“the aggressive ecstasy of Renihilation promises an exciting future - for Liturgy, and for us.”

“Hypnotic, occasionally blissful black metal; even more bone-chilling in tight quarters.”

Highly technical musicianship, poetico-mystical gesturing, and a minimal directness; all singular elements, whose interactions and reactions are contained in and bursting from a black metal framework. ▶ To celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Charlatans’ third album Up To Our Hips, we are excited to announce the release of an expanded edition of the album. The 2LP/2CD/DIGITAL set will feature the original album in addition to 10 bonus tracks comprised of live recordings, rare mixes and more, all curated by Tim Burgess. The special package has brand new reimagined artwork by Nik Void and the LP is pressed on petrol blue bio vinyl.
Released in 1994, Up To Our Hips was a new direction for the band. It leaned slightly away from the lighter pop songs of their previous two albums and is darker, heavier and organ led. At the time, they were listening to a lot of Small Faces, Beatles, and Dylan and watching David Lynch films all while navigating internal band stress, and many of the lyrics on the album reflect the stress of the band at the time.
The tracks that have been added to the release include two live tracks recorded for the Steve Lamaq and Jo Whiley Show, plus B-sides, alternate mixes and more.
The Charlatans - easily recognized by their hallmark sound of driving Hammond organs, northern UK soul and house-influenced rhythms, swaggering guitars and Tim Burgess’ sunny yet yearning vocals - are one of the most consistent British pop bands of the past 3 decades. The band has released an album every few years since 1989, each of which landed in the top half of the UK music charts, 3 of them hitting #1 and spawning 22 top 40 singles. The band has overcome obstacles from nervous breakdowns to addiction to near bankruptcy to the heartbreaking deaths of two founding members, all the while adapting, transforming and producing new music in spite of it all.

BUFFALO TOM
Birdbrain Let Me Come Over Big Red Letter Day
Buffalo Tom (Bill Janovitz, Chris Colbourn and Tom Maginnis) formed at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1984 - a breeding ground of post punk guitar bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Pixies. The three longstanding bandmates recognize the achievement of their longevity as a creative unit. Initially offering a raw, propulsive sound that emphasized Janovitz’s imposing guitar squall, Buffalo Tom’s early approach gave way to a more melodic, yet no less distinctive, style. They have released ten studio albums and their most recent, Jump Rope, was released earlier this year.
Birdbrain is the band’s second album produced with help from by J Mascis. Released in 1990, songs from Birdbrain have become live favorites including the epic title track and “Enemy”.
In 1992 the band recorded their third album Let Me Come Over with a varied group of songs they had been developing at home and on the road - mixing their live power trio sound with some more acoustic based guitar ballads. The album’s single “Taillights Fade” became their signature song.
Released in 1993, Big Red Letter Day found the band doing what they do very well indeed, but with more body and gloss to the production. The album was recorded in LA by The Robb Brothers and features numerous favorites, in particular: “Sodajerk”, “I’m Allowed”, “Treehouse” and the classic “Late At Night.”

BIG THIEF Masterpiece
Big Thief’s music, rooted in the songs of Adrianne Lenker, paints in vivid tones “the process of harnessing pain, loss, and love, while simultaneously letting go, looking into your own eyes through someone else’s, and being okay with the inevitability of death,” says Adrianne.
Masterpiece, Big Thief’s debut album, is filled with characters and visceral narratives, songs that pivot in the space of a few words. Adrianne’s voice and guitar playing speak of rich emotional territory with grace and insight. In her words, the record tracks “the masterpiece of existence, which is always folding into itself, people attempting to connect, to both shake themselves awake and to shake off the numbness of certain points in their life. The interpretations might be impressionistic or surrealistic, but they’re grounded in simple things.”
Adrianne met longtime musical partner, guitarist and singer, Buck Meek, in Brooklyn, and they quickly formed a creative bond tempered by the experience of traveling and performing for months on end in old dive bars, yards, barns, and basements together. They recorded a pair of duo albums (A-Sides and B-Sides), and Adrianne showcased her songs on a solo album, Hours Were The Birds.
Now, as a full rock and roll band, with Buck on guitar, Max Oleartchik on bass, and James Krivchenia on drums, they bring a steady wildness, giving the songs an even deeper layer of nostalgia. “These guys feel like a pack of wolves at my back,” says Adrianne, “they make the songs howl and bark with a fierce tenderness that gives me courage.”
After spending last July in an old house that they turned into a studio on Lake Champlain with producer Andrew Sarlo, the resulting collection soars on what Big Thief fan Sharon Van Etten calls “...a real journey, with intelligent stories and twist-and-turn melodies.”

The trails that Brooklyn’s Big Thief -- Adrianne Lenker (guitar, vocals), Buck Meek (guitar), Max Oleartchik (bass), and James Krivchenia (drums) -- take us down on Capacity , the band’s highly anticipated second record out 6/9 on Saddle Creek, are overgrown with the wilderness of pumping souls.
After last year’s stunning Masterpiece , Capacity was recorded in a snowy winter nest in upstate New York at Outlier Studio with producer Andrew Sarlo. The album jumps right into lives marked up and nipped in surprisingly swift fashion. They are peopled and unpeopled, spooked and soothed, regenerating back into a state where they can once again be vulnerable. Lenker’s songs introduce us to a gallery of multifacted women and deal with the complicated matters of identity — at once dangerous and curious, though never unbelievable. Lenker shows us the gentle side of being ripped open. Tricked into love, done in and then witnessing the second act of pulling oneself back together to prepare for it to all happen again, but this time to a sturdier soul, one who is going to take the punches better than ever before and deal some jabs and roundhouses of their own.
The album is thick with raw, un-doctored beauty: most of the songs on Capacity were played for the rst time in the studio and were recorded the same day. “There is a darker darkness and a lighter light on this album,” Lenker explains. “The songs search for a deeper level of self-acceptance, to embrace the world within and without. I think Masterpiece began that process, as a reaction from inside the pain, whereas I feel Capacity examines the pain from the outside.”

NC MUSIC LOVE ARMY • WE ARE NOT FOR SALE
THE NC MUSIC LOVE ARMY (NCMLA) emerged in the Summer of 2013 sparked by the Moral Monday movement led by the North Carolina NAACP, forming a powerful coalition of NC-based musicians united in their stand against regressive politics in their state.
Co-founded by C AITLIN CARY and JON LINDSAY , the collective quickly grew to include more than 50 members determined to fight by means of original songs by and for the people of NC, spotlighting the moral bankruptcy of new policies from the state’s Republican supermajority. Over four years, the NCMLA issued 14 releases, becoming a soundtrack for social justice and championing the causes and candidates fighting for an inclusive body politic.
Their debut full-length album, We Are Not For Sale, captured the energy and spirit of this movement that stands the test of time. The record is primarily delivered through the lens of roots rock and folk, with songs featuring a litany of passionate vocalists trading fiery verses while tackling issues like women’s health, voter suppression, and tax policy. The songs presented here are deceptively simple in their efficacy; while weighted heavily in message, they remain catchy and musically interesting, a compelling listen from beginning to end. The album became a battle cry for NC’s Democratic party, with its anthems leading the charge in the fight to successfully quash Governor Pat McCrory’s bid for a second term in 2016. We offer it up again in 2024 as a call to arms for progressive change for a new Blue Wave of listeners and singers-along.
Recorded mostly in Raleigh, NC, with GREG ELKINS , the album was produced by Jon Lindsay and mixed by CHRIS STAMEY . The record features contributions and performances from a diverse array of artists, some who now enjoy wide acclaim.

Beneath The Mask would turn out to be the final studio album by the Elektric Band’s classic lineup, but they went out with a bang: The album hit #2 on the Billboard jazz chart while Entertainment Weekly raved, “Corea weaves his tricks into a seamless musical fabric. And the Elektric Band—Corea, bassist John Patitucci, drummer Dave Weckl, guitarist Frank Gambale, and saxophonist Eric Marienthal—has never sounded better.”
Originally released at the height of the CD era, Beneath The Mask’s only vinyl edition was an edited pressing for the Swiss and South African markets that drastically sacrificed sound quality to cram 55 minutes of music on a single LP. Now, Candid is proud to present the definitive reissue of Beneath The Mask, restored to its original lenth and cut across 2 LPs by Bernie Grundman for maximum sonic detail and dynamic range. The packaging has also been expanded to include full credits, photos, and new liner notes featuring contributions from the surviving members of the group.

More lost recordings from Mark Sandmanʼs archives! Two lost shows from the Hypnosonics! The LP version is culled from a rare NYC show & legendary Boston gig, and unveils three new Mark Sandman songs that became eventual Morphine cuts served up by his “secret band.” The CD version boasts two complete shows split over two CDs featuring unheard Hypnosonics recordings, eventual Morphine songs, and three lost compositions. A rare NYC show & a legendary Boston gig, rival for space in your player!
There was so much sexuality oozing out of those songs but also humor... a lot of wry dry wit and downright silliness. super sophisticated silliness and all of it transportive, ecstatic, transcendent. There was nothing quite like seeing Hypnosonics and all of us in the audience knew it. We knew this was some pure sonic magic and we were totally hypnotized. – Margaret Garrett (Mr. Airplane Man)
There is something pure and iconically rock n' roll at the heart of all of Mark Sandman's projects and bands, which manifested to an apex with his impossibly grooving band Hypnosonics. He knew: girls always, ALWAYS, want to DANCE - first and FOREMOST. Standing in front of a live band - they want to melt away their minds, forget about their emotions, let go of the world, and land - IN THE BODY, ON EARTH, eyes CLOSED - where the blood starts to pulse, and the hips start to shake, and the feet start to twitch and one is justgone baby gone... to the beat of course, but also to every surprise thread of instrumentation - which is where the hands rejoice in their flourishes and the soul flies free alongside of every note and improvisation... At least, that's what always happened to me standing in front of these incredible players!!!!!

Throughout the 1960s, Canadian composer Bruce Haack was as ubiquitous on children’s and variety shows as were exotic animals from the San Diego Zoo. But he wasn’t there to perform so much as demonstrate.
In his formative compositions for theatre and ballet, he had experimented with tape loops and musique concrète techniques; by the early ’60s, he wasn’t just playing around with electronic sounds, but also making the very gizmos that generated them.
By day, Haack would eke out a living as a composer for commercials and a series of instructive, interactive children’s records made with collaborator Esther Nelson. But by night, Haack was making music that was decidedly adults-only.
Originally released in 1970, The Electric Lucifer was Haack’s first work pitched to a contemporary rock audience, released by Columbia Records in the dying days of a post-hippie moment when bizarro outsider-psych could still find a home on a major label. If it was not the first rock record to feature electronics, it was certainly among the first to give them a starring role—both musically and conceptually.

The sprawling and ambitious third album by amorphous Brisbane, Australia garage rock outfit Velociraptor!
Computer Future is a stream of addictively catchy rockers characterised by stupidly infectious melodies, an overabundance of earworm hooks, guitars aplenty plus of course their trademark gang vocals and harmonies. Their distinctively melodic take on garage rock is still front and centre, only now augmented by quirkily compelling sonic detours into psych and new wave realms! LP Artwork by Phoebe Paradise.
Comparing Miracle Debt to bands like the Replacements or Husker Du is a cheap shortcut. It’s not totally wrong; the three piece are a band making melodic punk and their songs do have distinct hardcore influences. But it's mostly just a geographically reference since Miracle Debt are from Minneapolis. But it’s also true that Forrest Jedediah, who sings, plays guitar and writes the songs, grew up in Arkansas. And although his twang still comes through in the songs, and a listener might hear moments that remind them of “region rock” bands like ADD/C or Future Virgins, Jedediah says that label isn’t quite right either as the band isn't from that region. The songs on their new LP, Under the Shadow are at their core short, DIY punk songs with riffs and twang that bleed through each and every one of the thirteen tracks.
Jedediah was still actually still living in Arkansas in 2018 when he and drummer Mike Wilson planted the seeds of what would become Miracle Debt. Shortly after recording their self-released debut, a self-titled ten-song LP, Wilson’s Constant Insult bandmate Katie Thornton joined on bass and over the next four years, the band played locally, and toured regularly. By the time they were ready to record their second LP, Under the Shadow, the band enlisted Matt Castore (Condominium, Formaldehyde Junkies) who had recorded their first record to track the new LP at Soft Cult, a collectively run recording studio that Thornton belongs to.
In the years since the band started, Minneapolis and its punk scene have endured profound tragedy. As Jedediah said of the record, “It's about moving forward, to keep some love in the face of horrible odds and traumatic loss. Holding on to what's good despite a spinning compass.”

ROYAL TRUX
HAND OF GLORY (REMASTERED)
OUT NOVEMBER 8th 2024
From a long-forgotten trunk; two extended jams, twin slabs, circa 1989. Continuing Fire Records’ series of classic remastered albums from Royal Trux, ‘Hand Of Glory’ is released on silver vinyl. This bad-ass black, white and blue magic is a kind of Burial Dub… or so preached the sleeve of ‘Hand Of Glory’ on its original release in 2002. Legend has it, the two sides of this 40-minute gem were recorded between 1985 and 1989. The resultant mountain of creativity from where they hail were inevitably left under a scuzzy sofa as life and a career that ebbed and flowed over nine albums. Royal Trux became an inspirational tipping point for everyone from Pavement & Sonic Youth to the Black Keys, Kurt Cobain, The Avalanches & Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor. “I urge and encourage you to enter the harmolodic multiverse of their music.” Alexis Taylor, Hot Chip ‘Hand Of Glory’ is not like their other albums but then again none of their albums are alike, it’s a two-faced masterpiece. Side one’s ‘Domo Des Burros’/‘Two Sticks’ is on par with Beefheart’s sprawling ‘Troutmask Replica’. It plays out in 19 minutes, sounding like it was laid down on Warhol’s sofa in The Factory; like Dylan’s sprawling ‘Desolation Row’ with, background squalls, interruptions and both Neil Hagerty and Jennifer Herrema’s overlayed stream of consciousness peeping through a multi-layered backdrop. It’s just staggering.
Side two’s ‘The Boxing Story’, a loose homage to William Burroughs, moulds and morphs from tape to tape, a multi-speed soundtrack, while the dynamic duo press pause, guitars ring, occasional melodic lines arrive and evaporate. Lou Reed’s pastoral ‘Metal Machine Music’ could perhaps be recognized as an older and perhaps less challenging sibling.
A two-sided masterpiece featuring two wayward pieces of creative genius.
THEY COULD HAVE BEEN BIGGER THAN THE BEATLES (RESTORED ART EDITION)
NOVEMBER 8th 2024
Ella Raphael is blessed with an amazing voice, filled with warmth and emotion; it’s engaging, like an old friend Originally released in 1982, ‘They Could Have Been Bigger Than The Beatles’ was the influential band’s third album. A collection of singles, demos, outtakes and rarities that was intended to mark the band's breakup in 1982, had they not got back together again so soon. This 2024 reissue comes with faithfully restored artwork, from one the album’s original hand painted sleeves. The record features ‘David Hockney's Diaries’, ‘The Boy In The Paisley Shirt’ and ‘Psychedelic Holiday’. With the formidable Daniel Treacy at its core, Television Personalities remain one of new wave’s longest serving and seminal artists, with a career spanning over three decades. The indie pop visionaries have influenced many people across the industry including Pavement, The Lemonheads, Fat White Family, MGMT and Creation Records’ Alan McGee. “Its scope is incredible, its ambition outstanding and its heart damn near broken.” - Melody Maker.

JACK JONES
JACK JONES
Having established himself as a guitar slinging matinee idol fronting Welsh riot starters Trampolene and riding shotgun in Peter Doherty’s band the Puta Madres, Jack Jones releases his debut solo album ‘Jack Jones’. For this album Jack Jones has put away his guitar and embraced a fresh and highly contemporary sound in which to couch his hard-hitting state of the nation poems of existential fear and loathing.
His lyrics tackle many of today’s burning issues: mental health, drug addiction, mortality, and the tortuous demands of technology. There’s also joy and hope in there. With some of his catchiest tunes so far, it’s a record that’ll both open up this natural-born star to untapped audiences, and reveal hidden depths to those already ‘on the team’.
Much like the first Specials album at the turn of the 1980s, you can imagine ‘Jack Jones’ being useful to youngsters in 2024 trying to navigate the problems of today – swap birth control and street violence for mindless hedonism and mental-health struggles, and you have an equally bold and connective roadmap to the pitfalls of contemporary young-adult living.
Jack Jones has enjoyed Top 10 success with TRAMPOLENE on the Independent Album Charts with three Top 10 Albums, hit the road as special guest to Liam Gallagher at the personal request of the iconic frontman, supported The Libertines on an Arena Tour as ‘Tour Poet’ and had the honour of being the first act to headline Swansea Arena.

SIDE 1
Willie Nelson said “Ray Charles did more for country music than any other artist.” These 12 songs, culminating with the #1 hit Ray & Willie made together, proves the point.
Best Of Country & Western is the first time the biggest country songs across Ray’s entire career have been distilled down to a single, hit-packed LP. Spanning three decades—from his first chart-topping country song, “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” to his last, “Seven Spanish Angels,”—this collection is the ideal entry point for even the most casual fans of Ray Charles and anyone curious to hear where today’s biggest country stars are drawing inspiration.

GENIUS LIVES ON TANGERINE
Founded by Ray Charles in the 1960s, Tangerine Records is home to the recordings that tranformed him from artist to icon. Each album in the Tangerine Masters series is restored and remastered under the direct supervision of The Ray Charles Foundation.
Scrawled in the margins of a William Carlos Williams poetry book dusted off in his late grandfather’s study, S. Holden Jaffe found a note that had once been left for his grandmother: “I miss you already, and I haven’t left yet.” A simple gesture preserved for decades illuminated a reality that Jaffe now faced at present: a perpetual state of similar departures.
The years during which Jaffe began writing, recording and performing as Del Water Gap were ones fueled by the kind of hedonism that you can get away with when you’re young and hungry in New York City. But at some point between exiting the pandemic and releasing his long-awaited debut album via Mom + Pop in 2021, that lifestyle had swiftly (and necessarily) vanished. Now midway through a global tour behind that record, he had found stability in the constant transience through his relationship and his sobriety. Still, the rigor of spending every night in a different hotel room was taking its expected toll, and by the time he was expected to put pen to paper for the next Del Water Gap project, Jaffe felt spiritually depleted.
Any trace of cynicism began to dissipate instantly upon his first session with producer Sammy Witte (Harry Styles, SZA) who encouraged Jaffe to abandon the self-conscious subtext of his previous work and make the record he’s always wanted to make but never allowed himself to. That meant hoisting his sonic palette up into panoramic pop heights, first on “Losing You” and later on lead single “All We Ever Do Is Talk,” a joyride hinging on massive existential doubt: “will we ever get that feeling again?” Can the cardinal jolt of young love last beyond its initial spark? Can one still achieve highs without the drugs? Are the best times really over, or are they still within reach?
I Miss You Already + I Haven’t Left Yet doesn’t wait for the answers, generating its own propulsive thrills through skyward hooks and resplendent imagery further punctuated by additional production from Mike Malchicoff (King Princess, Kanye West) and Ethan Gruska (Phoebe Bridgers, Manchester Orchestra), instrumental contributions from Clairo, Zach Dawes, Mason Stoops and Rob Humphreys, and a duet with Arlo Parks, the glowing “Quilt of Steam.” As its striking cover suggests, I Miss You Already + I Haven’t Left Yet presents a portrait of a man who is weathered but tenacious, standing upright and adamant on forging his way through an atmosphere of ennui with all his might.

OVERVIEW
John Cale was never very kind to his solo debut, Vintage Violence. When it was released in early 1970, Cale had been out of The Velvet Underground for less than two years. He wanted to prove he could be the songwriter, the person penning the words and melodies behind which a band could work. “I was masked on Vintage Violence,” he wrote much later. “You’re not really seeing the personality.” Indeed, Cale’s personality as a polyglot seemingly interested in everything emerged more and more on his next two solo albums, his only two for Reprise: 1972’s bracing and exploratory classical sojourn, The Academy in Peril, and 1973’s masterclass in anxious but accessible songcraft, Paris 1919. By reissuing both records in tandem, Domino — Cale’s home now for a dozen years — affirms the artistic fearlessness Cale then fostered at the edge of 30, when all of music seemed like one inviting playpen.
This remastered and expanded reissue of Paris 1919 is a testament to that progress and the patience that engendered it. In previously unreleased tapes, Cale teases his new chemical habits as he tries to find his way through “Half Past France,” then attempts new vocal arrangements for its beginning in an alternate version. (New liner notes by music journalist Grayson Haver Currin explore this process, too.) The gentle, swaying version of “Hanky Panky Nohow” that eventually made Paris 1919 was the right one, but a brilliant “Drone Mix” included here, with Cale’s viola seesawing in hypnotic waves, shows just how much he and Thomas were willing to tinker with these tunes, to test the bounds of songcraft. Appended at the end of these extras, “Fever Dream (You’re a Ghost)” — a new Cale composition that perfectly flows out of yet another mix of “Hanky Panky Nohow” — shows that he’s still doing just that into his 80s.

When Cale arrived in Los Angeles from New York in the early ’70s, he was a pinball in the world, his past having bounced him into a now-precarious position. In California, he entered a chaotic new relationship that led to a quick and disastrous marriage, started his new industry gig, and found his West Coast drug of choice, cocaine. Despite its reputation as Reprise’s first classical album, The Academy in Peril indulges that extreme upper energy, bouncing among ambitious ideas with unguarded zeal. Warner Brothers spent $120,000 on The Academy in Peril, and Cale even enlisted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to play on several of its tracks. Still, there is an early punk energy to it all, from idea to execution. Cale wrote most of it in the English studio as he recorded it, attempting to build symphonies on the go and painstakingly overdubbing its mountain of parts alone. Here is Cale, creating his own secret fusion and ignoring the strictures of expectation.
The frantic pace of making The Academy in Peril, though, taught Cale an important lesson: take the time you need to make the album you want to hear. In late 1972, Cale rendezvoused with Little Feat and bassist Wilton Felder in Hollywood. How, though, would this wild and weird country-rock band, led by a maverick named Lowell George, work with a Welshman who had just made a classical record? Cale, too, had the help of Chris Thomas, an English producer he admired. “After I’d left the studio, Chris would be there working on those tracks, listening over and over to the tapes,” Cale wrote. “That’s the secret to progress in production.”

THE COWARD BROTHERS
The exact relationship between Henry (T-Bone Burnett) and Howard Coward (Elvis Costello) remains ambiguous. They often referred to themselves as “One and a Half Brothers,” which might hint at their height difference or imply they were not actually siblings but were involved in an elaborate ruse.
Their musical partnership, known as The Coward Brothers, was initiated by Smiley “Doc” Snipson, who discovered Henry Coward in 1956 and signed him for a UK tour. The brothers’ hit single, “My Baby Just Squeals (You Heel),” was followed by less successful records and a controversial Cold War-themed song. To preserve their fading fame, Snipson orchestrated their supposed death in a plane crash, but they were actually in hiding on a Caribbean island, secretly recording music and sending it back to Snipson.
When their funds ran out, they returned to Miami and made sensational claims about writing famous songs, leading to a brief stint as songwriters for Bill Bogguss. They later resumed recording, but their partnership eventually fractured, leading to years of estrangement.
Their music, from early rock and roll hits to later, more introspective songs, is compiled in the album, The Coward Brothers. After years of silence, their story was explored in a radio program, revealing the complexity of their relationship and their enduring bond. Despite their tumultuous history, their music remains a testament to their unyielding spirit.
The Coward Brothers are Elvis Costello and T-Bone Burnett. The Audible Original radio play, The True Story Of The Coward Brothers, is directed by Christopher Guest, and stars Howard Coward, Henry Coward, Harry Shearer, Edward Hibbert, Rhea Seehorn, Stephen Root, and Kathreen Khavari. On November 15, 2024, New Hampshire-bred Americana five piece, Say ZuZu will release a deluxe reissue of their beloved 1998 album, Bull. The staggering thirteen-song set (+ three new bonus tracks) gets a new chance at life at its new home on the Athens, GA based label - Strolling Bones Records.
The re-release of Bull comes in follow up to No Time to Lose, the group’s first original studio album since the turn of the century; released in March of 2023 and met with critical acclaim.
“Bull marks the sound of a band hitting its stride,” Say ZuZu explains. “We were tight from regular touring and sitting on improved confidence from the experience Two songwriters with a foothold on and a clearer vision of who they were as blooming writers The band was able to harness all of the hope and promise into a clear leap forward artistically and sonically.”
Bull (Deluxe Edition) is set for release on November 15, 2024 via Strolling Bones Records.

How could this album, one of the biggest crossover country smashes of the ‘90s and a complete artistic triumph, remain a vinyl wallflower at this late date?! Well, we at Real Gone Music are pleased and proud to take this classic Mary Chapin Carpenter release to the dance with a special 2-LP expanded highlighter yellow vinyl edition that includes an entire bonus side featuring a live performance from 1994, the same year Stones in the Road was released! The accolades and accomplishments of this record are almost too numerous to list here: #1 on the Country charts, Top 10 on the Billboard 200 Pop charts, a #1 Country hit with “Shut Up and Kiss Me,” other charting singles like “Tender When I Want to Be,” “House of Cards,” and “Why Walk When You Can Fly?”, and Grammies for Best Country Album and Best Female Country Vocal Performance. But hits and awards aside, what makes this album so special is that every song packs its own unique emotional punch, starting with the title tune that was first covered by Joan Baez; you could also point to the transcendent “John Doe No. 24” and the brilliant “End of My Pirate Days” as firsts among equals on this amazingly consistent and rewarding album (which Country Universe called the best Contemporary Country album of all time!). Some credit must be given to the band that producer John Jennings assembled, including drummer Kenny Aronoff, keyboardist Benmont Tench, guitarists Lee Roy Parnell and Steuart Smith, and backing vocalists Trisha Yearwood, Shawn Colvin, and Linda Williams. But, as always with a Mary Chapin Carpenter album, it’s the songwriting that’s the real star: witty, wistful, personal, and REAL. With gorgeous hooks to boot! Side D includes the four tracks that came out on the Live at “Her Majesty’s Theatre” EP recorded in London, featuring a version of “Shut Up and Kiss Me,” and it all comes with two printed inner sleeves boasting lyrics. Released on its 30th anniversary with the full consent and support of the artist herself!

STREET DATE: NOVEMBER 15, 2024
The title of this 2004 classic is an apt one; Of Malice and the Magnum Heart brought melody and emotion to the metalcore genre like few albums before and since, particularly on the devastating “The Year Summer Ended in June,” which commemorates the deaths of Jordan Wodehouse and Daniel Langlois of the Misery Signals precursor band Compromise, killed by a drunk driver in Heflin, Alabama. For its 20th anniversary, and for its FIRST release on vinyl at American retail, we’re pressing this one in “orange crush” vinyl, complete with a lyric insert. Complex time signatures, complementary dual guitar parts, and experimental interludes (e.g. the instrumental “Worlds & Dreams”) make for a thinking and feeling man’s metal album… recommended!
THE UNFOLDING:
STREET DATE: NOVEMBER 15, 2024
How wild did things get in 1967? So wild that a label (Audio Fidelity) not particularly known for its hipness put out a record with an insert to send away for “psychedelic ornaments” so you, too, could throw an acid party! And the back cover offered “instructions” referencing everybody from Emmett Grogan of the Diggers to Albert Hofmann, the discoverer of LSD. But perhaps the most amazing thing about this album was that, despite its almost comical (though wellinformed) attempt to cash in on the psychedelic craze, How to Blow Your Mind and Have a Freak-Out Party wound up being a charming and even entrancing psych-pop gem of a record, albeit one with its requisite share of Eastern-influenced mumbo-jumbo. For its first-ever American vinyl reissue, we’re pressing up just 500 copies in “orange sunshine” vinyl, complete with the insert (you can try sending it in, but don’t get your hopes up). Groovy, man!

Candid Records was the first label to give Charles Mingus complete creative control in the studio. As expected, those recordings became the stuff of legend, producing no less than three iconic jazz albums.
Featuring a dream-team of players past, present, and future icons— Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Lonnie Hillyer, Roy Eldridge, Ted Curson, Tommy Flanagan, Charles McPherson, Paul Bley, Britt Woodman, Jimmy Knepper, Jo Jones, Dannie Richmond, and Nico Bunick— Mingus was free to explore and experiment like never before.
Candid thoughtfully assembled rare and unreleased tracks from those revelatory sessions to produce Incarnations, a new, stand-alone album as impactful as any in the Mingus catalog.
Reincarnations is the crucial companion piece that completes the story of the groundbreaking work Mingus created during this pivotal moment in his career, gathering the remaining tracks into another listening experience that puts these rare recordings in a whole new light.
Carefully curated, sequenced and designed by Candid Records to stand proudly alongside his other masterworks for the label, Bernie Grundman’s sensitive remastering and Marcus J. Moore’s insightful liner notes make for another landmark Charles Mingus release.

NEA Jazz Master, former Jazz Messenger, and Mardi Gras Indian Chief, Donald Harrison Jr. is one of finest saxophonists of his generation. The son of an Indian Chief, he and his father were the real-life basis for the main storyline in the HBO series Treme, where Harrison also served as the show’s consultant to ensure its authenticity and even portrayed himself on screen.
On Indian Blues, the New Orleans native weaves his entire history into a joyous tribute to the unique sound of his hometown.
Featuring the great Dr. John and the Mardi Gras Indian chants of The Guardians Of The Flame, Indian Blues brought a new energy to Mardi Gras tradition, infusing the sophisticated fire of Harrison’s jazz background to create something at once reverent, playful, and modern. New Orleans’ own music bible, Offbeat Magazine said it best: “This historical and fun testament should resurface at Carnival for years to come.”
Candid is proud to put this party back in print on LP and CD. Now available with refreshed art, full liner notes, and remastered audio by Bernie Grundman, we should all expect Indian Blues to become a Mardi Gras soundtrack staple from now on.

Recorded August 23, 1960
Considered by many to be the greatest piano player the blues ever knew, Otis Spann’s best-known work was backing Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Etta James, and others on the classic Chess sessions that defined Chicago blues. It wasn’t until 1960 that Spann got to cut an album of his own, when Nat Hentoff signed him to Candid Records. Otis Spann Is The Blues was the first album released on Candid and remains one of the finest blues records ever cut.
Walking The Blues comes from the same historic 1960 session, but wasn’t released until 1972. Despite its posthumous release and outof-its-era artwork, the music transcended its trappings, moving esteemed critic Robert Cristgau to include it in his “essential library” of recordings from the ’50s and ’60s. Spann’s masterful, brute-force boogie is accompanied by Robert Jr. Lockwood— the only guitarst taught by Robert Johnson himself—with guest vocals from the great James “St. Louis Jimmy” Oden. The easy, natural interplay between the three friends gives this expertlyengineered recording a rare, warm intimacy that remastering engineer Bernie Grundman enhances in this new, all-analog remaster. The new packaging, which reproduces the liner notes from the album’s original release, brings the artwork back where it belongs by evoking Candid’s distinctive early-’60s style.

Born and raised in Cuba, Paquito D’Rivera is one of the country’s most acclaimed musicians. When he defected to America in 1980, he became an internationally revered ambassador for Latin jazz while constantly expanding its reach and vocabulary.
An NEA Jazz Master, 16-time Grammy® winner, recipent of the National Medal of Arts, a Guggenheim Fellow, and a Kennedy Center honoree as a Living Jazz Legend, D’Rivera has backed artists ranging from Dizzy Gillespie to Gloria Estefan to Yo Yo Ma in addition to his outstanding catalog of classic albums showcasing his ability to move fluidly between styles while always sounding distnictly D’Rivera.
Who’s Smoking?! was Rivera’s tribute to the straight-ahead jazz pioneered by Dizzy, Miles, and Monk. but it’s anything but straight-ahead. While the great James Moody provides a direct line to bebop’s beginnings, D’Rivera’s band of Latin-jazz legends and contemporary American hotshots give the session a unique flavor fans will instantly recognize.
Originally released on CD, Candid is proud to revive this hard-driving set, with refreshed artwork, plus newly remastered sound courtesy of Alex McCollough at True East Mastering. Now on vinyl for the first time, Jeff Powell cut the Who’s Smoking?! across 2LPs for the best possible sound.

• A NEW PURPLE PRESSING OF A RA CORNERSTONE, CUT BY KEVIN GRAY!
• FEATURES THE NEW COVER THATʼS ALREADY WORKED ITʼS WAY INTO RA LORE, PLUS AN INSERT WITH THE ORIGINAL COVER AND LINERS FROM ROBERT CAMPBELL!
Astro Black has long been known as a cornerstone of the Ra catalog. It is well recorded, features a superb Arkestral lineup, and successfully combines several of the styles in which Sun Ra orbited, from Saturnic jazz to astro-funk.
ARTIST: SUN RA
TITLE: ASTRO BLACK
PURPLE VINYL LP
Although Astro Black was obviously professionally produced in a recording studio, no one is entirely sure where or when. The jacket of the original release gave the date as May 7, 1972, and the location as “El Saturn Studio,” Chicago. There never was such an animal as the El Saturn studio, in Chicago or in any other town. Yet it was routinely cited as the venue for Saturn/Impulse! Recordings, no matter how old they were or where they were originally from.
The title track was a vehicle for Arkestral vocalist June Tyson, who had been with the band since 1967 and was in absolute peak form in 1972. Meanwhile, Ronnie Boykins, who had been Sunny’s full-time bassist from 1957 through 1968, was a welcome guest on this occasion. It is his ostinato that holds the theme statement together, and his arco that guides and accompanies Sunny on his space wandering, where they are joined by Akh Tal Ebah on trumpet, and by the ecstatically interweaving alto saxes of Marshall Allen and Danny Davis. A trio of wriggling alto (Danny Davis), mini-Moog synthesizers, and high bowed bass develops, with Sunny and Ronnie accompanying Tyson’s hushed recapitulation. This is one of the Arkestra’s greatest performances.

WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR… THAT TURNS OUT TO BE SATURN.
Previously unheard Ra culled from the archives and compiled based on their association to that children's film corporation with the cartoon rodent. Back in the earthly bins on black vinyl!
Jazz aficionados and Disney nerds alike will marvel at how seamlessly Sun Ra and his Arkestra put their own unique twist on both well-known and overlooked Disney songs. Pink Elephants on Parade takes nine songs from Disney’s storied catalog and recontextualizes them as beautiful, fun, and sometimes terrifying pieces of Afrofuturist jazz. The collection also shows further proof of how Ra was always willing to transcend conventions of jazz. Listen to the full album and you will likely never look at the Disney music catalog the same way ever again.
Originally known for accompanying Dumbo and Timothy’s colorful alcohol-induced hallucinations, this song is given a whole new life by Ra and the Arkestra in more ways than one. It also feels faithful to the original at the same time, with the cacophony of horns, drums, percussion, and cowbell resembling that of a marching band. However, the demented grandeur of the song is turned up to eleven with zany vocal lines (hence the high-pitched “What’ll I do” inflections) and other performances that somehow sound more evil and gruff here than they did on Oliver Wallace and Ned Washington’s version. Though the Sportsmen’s vocals from that particular arrangement had a certain creepiness to it, the Arkestra takes a previously innocent sounding song and makes Pink Elephants On Parade sound even more terrifying.
BLACK VINYL LP:
Fat Freddy’s Drop hit the ground running with new studio album SLO MO, a bass-heavy blast of redemption and resolution. Described by Fitchie as 'afro rhythmic soul music, an exploration of Black music from Polynesia’, this heady mix creates the undefinable Freddy’s sound. Renowned worldwide for euphoric live shows, the Aotearoa band stepped inside their BAYS studio in Wellington, sunup to sundown, to craft a sixth studio album.
SLO MO is the strongest studio representation yet of a Freddy’s live show’, says Chopper Reeds. 'Usually we take the stage to the studio and this time, we're excited about taking our studio creation on to the stage.'
Emerging with nine tunes, SLO MO will drop first on double vinyl, opening the door for the full length album to be experienced as a body of work curated as Freddys intended.
Chopper Reeds continues, 'Towards the latter part of the record, Joe Dukie’s vocal presence becomes quite spectral allowing listeners to inject themselves into the music.
The evocative cover art is by Dan Tippett, Aotearoa New Zealand Artist, who describes the image as ‘an ancient ngahere forest in a Jurassic Aotearoa dreamtime ’

IT’SCHRISTMASTIME
Strut is celebrating the holiday season with an exclusive reissue of The Qualities’ 1961 single, “It’s Christmas Time” b/w “Happy New Year To You!” Originally released on Sun Ra’s Saturn label, this mysterious harmony group 45 captures a unique moment in music history.
Alongside his renowned jazz work in Chicago, Sun Ra experimented with harmony groups from the mid-‘50s to the early ‘60s, before his move to New York “I had two main vocal groups at the time, ” Ra recalled “One was called the Cosmic Echoes And the Cosmic Rays too. It was around the same time that John Gilmore joined the band. I saw the possibility that they could be really great so I began to coach them; they were connected with a barber shop, but I taught them other things. ” John Gilmore added, “We’d go down to the barber shops and rehearse some groups Sun Ra had them singin’ some beautiful stuff I think he probably was saving them from themselves He heard them, heard their potential, snatched them off the street, and started making them do something constructive. ”
This rare festive single from The Qualities, likely recorded around 1956, features Sun Ra as co-composer on both tracks alongside Saturn Records co-founder Alton Abraham Sun Ra might also be the harmonium player on these recordings Although two more songs by the group appeared on a Norton Records collection of Ra-related vocal numbers, these are the only known recordings by The Qualities.
Featuring two newly restored and remastered tracks thanks to Technology Works and housed in an exclusive new 7" picture sleeve designed by Liam Large
TimeFold is the new album by Trees Speak. This release sees the group expanding their musical horizons once more, from vast intergalactic landscapes to imaginary 1920s silent movie soundtracks, seamlessly blended with hypnotic motoric krautrock driving rhythms, angular post-punk, Stranger Things-esque synthesizer motifs, ambient sound sculptures and more to create a truly unique sound.
Trees Speak are based in Tucson, Arizona, comprised around the duo Daniel Martin Diaz and Damian Diaz. Their music is heavily influenced by the cosmic magic of the natural desert landscapes of Arizona, creating a unique and captivating sound that is both experimental and innovative.
‘Trees Speak’ relates to the idea of future technologies storing information and data in trees and plants - using them as hard drives - and the idea that Trees communicate collectively.
Their prolific output for Soul Jazz Records began in 2020 with ‘Ohms’. TimeFold is their sixth album (in four years) for the label.

“Around the making of the album, Fruit Bats had coalesced into a duo with Gillian Lisée and myself. It was sort of like our own mini cocaine-free version of Rumors. She wrote the bridge to ‘Magic Hour,’ which is totally about her. We also co-wrote ‘Track Rabbits’ together which is still one of my favorite things I've ever done and probably my favorite song on Mouthfuls.”
“I wrote ‘When U Love Somebody’ at the very last minute right before we started to record. It was kind of the throwaway track, which of course became by far the most popular song on the album and still probably the most popular Fruit Bats song, I was just trying to make something that sounded like Ray Davies, or even more specifically The Beatles’ ‘Two of Us.’ Also, I spelled ‘you’ with a ‘U’ to reference Prince. People still like dancing to this one at our shows and I’m still cool with playing it.”
“Brian Deck was the wizard on this one, plain and simple. I really just wanted to make something that sounded like Nilsson or Ray Davies or psychy-folky, but Brian had the concept for folding in electronics and weirdness. There’s a lot of headphone ear candy on this record, which at times sounds really smallsounding at first listen but is really pretty orchestrated.”

Here are a dozen hidden gems from the Sahara. Rough hewn, but intimate and beautiful recordings by Tinariwen, the world’s most famous Tuareg band. Some are demos that were later released in more produced versions on subsequent albums and four of them have never been released before. This is music to transport you, music that makes you feel you are in the Sahara with these extraordinary musicians for whom it is their home and their inspiration. These are raw desert treasures, recorded live with no overdubs, that are only emerging into the sunlight with this album of rarities, Idrache, Traces of the Past.
With their long desert robes and Tuareg turbans or shesh, Tinariwen are the originators of what’s become known as ‘desert blues’, a style of music they themselves call ‘assuf’ which also means ‘longing’ or ‘homesickness’ in the Tamasheq language. Exchanging Kalashnikovs for guitars after participating in the 1990 Tuareg rebellion, Tinariwian really are rock ’n’ roll rebels, drawing people into their growling vocals, spacey guitar lines and clapping rhythms. Over the past two decades, they’ve been popular and regular guests at festivals all around the world where they’ve done a lot to raise awareness about Tuareg culture and identity The songs on this album were recorded in 2002, 2006 and 2008, the first about a decade after the band started to become known internationally
Arun Ramamurthy Trio (ART) brings together South Indian classical Carnatic music and contemporary American jazz. Boundaries are blurred in this organic and seamless integration of styles as the group expands on traditional trio explores the kindred spirit of raga music and jazz, resulting in a deeply invigorating and spiritual experience. ART's sound is driven by the dynamic rhythm section of drummer Sameer Gupta & and electric bassist Damon Banks . Arun composed the “New Moon Suite” thanks to CMA's New Jazz Works grant, a 4-part work that shines a light on the teachings and wisdom of our ancestors, ART will release their 2nd studio recording, “New Moon” under Greenleaf Music in September 2024.

Genres: psychedelic rock, folk, baroque pop
Co-produced by weirdo punk luminary Wreckless Eric at Eric’s home studio in Catskill, NY, Ross Goldstein’s fifth fulllength record Blunders is simultaneously laden with psychedelia and overflowing with a kind of poignant realism. On Blunders, Goldstein’s songwriting is as vivid as the lead guitars are fuzzy. And altogether, the listener is left with a sense of Goldstein as weary but witty, a kind of psychedelic poet of lonely, rainy highways sending melancholic postcards from the edges of dreamtime
From 2020 to 2023, Goldstein was, as he puts it, entirely on his own He fell out of touch with friends, fell into the depths of depression and isolation and ended up living out of a suitcase, bouncing from cheap hotel to cheap hotel This crisis came to a dramatic and personal climax before Goldstein emerged into the open and welcoming arms of a series of recording sessions marked by Wreckless Eric’s engineering and companionship
Blunders is therefore defined by a compelling dualism There is on the one hand a potent sense of isolation: dreary views through rainy windows, reflections on failed relationships and scenes of harrowing loneliness But just as prominently, there is warmth and humor, there are dense and shimmering layers of mellotron and guitar, a subtle but infectious pulse and gleeful explosions of harmony, all of which may call to mind The Beach Boys’ unsung masterpiece Holland or Neil Young’s On the Beach or contemporaries like Chris Cohen and Hand Habits
Bolstered by Wreckless Eric’s deft co-production, Goldstein creates scenes lucid and wistful, as on “Foggy Blues.” There’s something in the timbre of Goldstein’s placid and crystalline voice that furthers the sense of duality. We can hear somehow that, as he sings, he’s no longer adrift, that he is steadied and at peace while the songs ’ characters drift and dream and sleep in the sand, “pull over now and then for a coffee” and change “faces” and “ names ” like fugitives on the run from identity, from ghosts of personal decisions There are echoes of Dennis Wilson’s Pacific Ocean Blue but Blunders is too personal to be derivative Instrumental “The Village” is a simple but gorgeous ode to Catskill, NY, while the penultimate track, “The Swimmer” epitomizes this distance-from-the-sadness quality While it seems like the song could be detailing some somber scenes from Goldstein’s life it is in fact inspired by the Burt Lancaster film of the same name
After 53 years out East –– some of those spent in the melancholic eddy that preceded the Blunders sessions ––Goldstein has relocated to southern New Mexico where he lives and works on the top floor of an old art deco hotel built in 1938 It’s a poignant image, a kind of layered and poetic resolution An era of listless wandering from cheap motel to cheap motel has come to an end in an old but beautifully restored desert hotel Goldstein puts it simply: “I find the atmosphere and vibes inspiring and have been working on new projects ” One can imagine the painted front of the postcard: Greetings from the edge of dreamtime

Sympathy Pain is an unusual animal, as their collective backgrounds come from hardcore, drone, and experimental pop in Salt Lake City, Utah. Sympathy Pain began as Skyler Hitchcox’s gloomy drone project which was later joined by Casey Hansen (of Cult Leader) to explore and expand the sullen space that the project initially carved out. Sympathy Pain is rounded out by Chaz Prymek (Lake Mary) and Nora Price. The deep connections to Salt Lake City’s underground well of experimental music have deep entanglements. Sympathy Pain has emerged from those entanglements with a clear eyed thesis, transmuting the often oppressive cultural climate of Utah through a personal veil of heavy sorrow.
Swan Dive is the product of years of excavating that space into a cavern, yielding their self-described “emo)))” (a nod to the preeminent doom/drone band Sunn) while still holding onto the submerged soundscapes that began as the core of the project. The album is expansive — a winding ride that travels from minimalism, to claustrophobic ambient, to triumphant passages that all underscore its forlorn undercurrent.
Originally released in January of 2024 as a CD by The Ghost is Clear and cassette by Diabolical Records, Swan Dive finally finds a new life on vinyl - reissued by the Cincinnati, OH record label Whited Sepulchre Records.
Tracked with Wes Johnson at Archive Recordings in SLC, UT and mixed/mastered by longtime friend and co-conspirator Ben Young, the album features a haunting guest spot by Madeline Johnston of Midwife on “Heaven + Hell” to close out the album.

7" single for the djs of the initial digital 45 of Peixeira Amolada e Quebra Queixo b/w Mariposa Tigre!
Peixeira Amolada & Quebra-queixo
It represents two popular stereotypes common in the third world: the sharp cutting knife and the quebra-queixo, the coconut candy brought from Angola by enslaved blacks. But, playfully, it is also the expression of direct speech and a sharp blow, also as a duo of anti-heroes in search of justice, equality and fraternity. This song also features an element never used before in the band: the guitar. One of the most popular instruments in the world, it provides the basis for the song, which goes through a groove full of counter-melodies that bring that feeling of a cut (hence the name of the song), in non-obvious conventions, and a surprising ending in another time signature. As well as the musical reference for the name, this track represents the struggle that many Brazilians go through every day to have a decent life. You have to have a "sharpened knife" to open the way.
Mariposa Tigre
Represents the playful and magical beings of the forest. How can a moth be a tiger? This song carries a lot of the sound Nomade has built up over the course of their career. Strong funk influences, ethno groove, with unconventional brass themes and a very jazzy accent. Halfway through the song, another of the band's very strong references comes to the fore: reggae, more precisely ragga, which makes the song even more danceable. Finally, a convention from the whole band brings the song to a grand end, making you want to listen to it again.

Peel Dream Magazine Rose Main Reading Room
le under:
Info:
Rose Main Reading Room, the fourth full length by Peel Dream Magazine, is a lush, inviting headphones record; the kind of album made to accompany city bus rides and rainy-day solo trips to accidental destinations. The band, whose name nods to the BBC Radio 1 legend John Peel — arbiter of all things underground, quality, and (it must be said) "cool" — has since its inception been a genre-hopping experiment, jumping from motorik krautrock to shoegaze and space age pop, and their newest work is a perfect starting point for the uninitiated, beckoning toward a newfound romance and nostalgia with their catchiest collection of songs to date.
Set to the backdrop of New York City and its towering landmarks — The American Museum of Natural History, Grand Central Station, and the like — songwriter Joseph Stevens weaves personal stories into the wider fabric of the natural world, touching on themes of instinct, animality, and evolution. On tracks such as “Central Park West” and “Migratory Patterns,” Stevens and his principal contributors, vocalist Olivia Babuka Black and multi-instrumentalist Ian Gibbs, evoke a woodland sound palette juxtaposed against drones and various electronics, like on side one closer “Gems and Minerals.”
Pre-release singles “Wish You Well” and “Lie In the Gutter” conjure the driving feel of the band’s earlier output, which often draws comparisons to Stereolab and Yo La Tengo, while songs like “Dawn” revel in arpeggiating woodwinds and mallets, recalling the wide-eyed contemporary classical of Steve Reich and Sufjan Stevens. Rose Main Reading Room also touches on Y2K indie pop nostalgia by incorporating breakbeats and acoustic guitar-driven ear candy, as heard on tracks like “Counting Sheep” and “Four Leaf Clover”.
Across its fteen songs, Rose Main Reading Room ultimately proposes a world of marvels and compelling complexity: “Oblast” cheekily prods at mutually assured destruction; “Ocean Life” explores the inniteness within ourselves; while “R.I.P. (Running in Place)” unpacks an all too familiar stagnation. It’s all part of, and crucial to, Rose Main Reading Room’s transportive power, ever reaching for the wonder and magic of the world we live in.

"On its fourth album, the Los Angeles-based group confronts the mysteries of memory and time in richly layered songs informed by classic indie pop, classical minimalism, and gentle psychedelia."
-Pitchfork
"Compared to the primarily virtual instruments of Pad, here Stevens took his home recordings and went around to various studios, where he had various other humans play. It results in a fuller, lusher sound that, in the end, makes Rose Main Reading Room feel more like a new destination built on a synthesis of everywhere Peel Dream has been."

asy Truth is a 15 track escapade showcasing the sharp NY lyricism of Skyzoo and the soulful Boom Bap production of Apollo Brown. This collaboration marks their first full-length LP together. Following Apollo Brown’s acclaimed projects with Mello Music Group, this album blends his golden-era-inspired production with Skyzoo’s vivid wordplay.
Xylitol is the alias of Catherine Backhouse, producer and DJ under the name DJ Bunnyhausen. She was a resident DJ at Kosmische, the now dormant Krautrock club and is a fan of jungle and hardcore. She currently co-hosts the radio show Slav To The Rhythm, which focuses on vintage central and eastern European pop and electronica and she's also co-writing a book on Yugoslavian pop culture.
'Anemones' is a total project from the cover to the music. Backhouse is fascinated by early botanical illustrations of anemones and other aquatic fauna, and how the act of taxonomy reveals as much about human psychology, desire and sublimation as it does about the organic specimen as a thing in itself. Each track is a microcosm of this 'other life', an allegory for the extraordinary potential latent within bodies that the dancefloor has the power to activate.
Using early jungle and garage as starting points to connect dots and open up contrasts between dance music and vintage electronics, Backhouse finds a sweet spot which, in her words "feels like something that's simultaneously still and ancient yet propulsive and ecstatic." Not afraid of letting the the hiss and flutter of the music show, 'Anemones' holds attention with ancient bubbling synths and gracefully drifting arpeggiations, occasionally brought to heel by charming melodies, all accompanied by breakbeats that explode like fireworks. 'Anemones' has a lively and unpolished aesthetic that's a kindred spirit to Nondi_'s 2023 album of smeary, water-damaged footwork, 'Flood City Trax'.
'Moebius' pits the spaced out neon chords of the track's namesake against absolutely tearing breaks, allowing time for this almost overwhelming combination to become near enough transcendental, while the bleeping melody and sad slavic chorus motif in 'Okko' feels like an artifact from an alternative future. The Drexciya meets 2-step garage of 'Dobro Jutro' creates a welcome respite at the album's midpoint before the flow builds up again to 'Daša' with its glassy sounds from a lost radiophonic workshop miniature meeting bruising kicks and snares. Meanwhile 'Iskria' has purring synth chords and 8-bit melodies evoking the cosmonaut age.
The subliminal influence of the Yugo era is felt in DIY synthesis and Mitteleuropean melody and seen in song titles such as 'Jelena', 'Miha', 'Daša' (named after novelist Daša Drndič) and 'Iskria' (taken from the fictitious Balkan region in Ottessa Moshfegh's bleak fable 'Lapvona'). 'Anemones' very effectively folds experimental genres from different times and places into a very enjoyable new sound.
DOROTHEA PAAS
THINK OF MIST
RELEASE DATE: November 15, 2024
“Are you ready to come into my world?” Dorothea Paas asks on Autumn Roses, the lead single from her latest album, Think of Mist, out this fall on Telephone Explosion Records. It’s an invitation extended with equal parts sincerity and slyness, delivered over a casually propulsive groove and layers of transcendent harmony. The only option is surrender.
Think of Mist is Paas’s sophomore album, following 2021’s Polarislonglisted Anything Can’t Happen - “one of the most stirring and emotionally resonant break-up albums of recent years” (Uncut). Widely praised for its emotional resonance and lush sonic landscape, Anything showcased the talent that has made Paas a fixture of Toronto’s music scene for over a decade - both as the leader of her own band, and as a vocalist and guitarist for a constellation of groups including U.S. Girls, Jennifer Castle and Shabason & Krgovich.
Think of Mist is an instruction: a playful guided meditation for the listener as they enter 32 thoroughly cohesive, yet surprise-filled, minutes of music. On this album, as on Anything, Paas’s lyrics braid emotional vulnerability with subtle, disarming wit; her crystalclear voice forms a counterpoint with her approach to instrumentation, which can travel from folk to math rock in a single song.

WARMDUSCHER announce details of their new album, Too Cold To Hold, featuring Irvine Welsh, Lianne La Havas, Janet Planet, Jeshi and CouCou Chloe. Out 15th November 2024 on Strap Originals.
Comprised of Clams Baker Jr., Benjamin Romans Hopcraft, Adam J. Harmer, Marley Mackey, Quinn Whalley, and Bleu Ottis Wright, Too Cold To Hold is undoubtedly their best and most ambitious album to date. Taking on board the repetitive and polyrhythmic grooves of gqom (an alluring South African take on house music), adding in a dash of hip hop flavours and even jazz, and then harnessing that to their punk-funk, disco pogo, it’s a spellbinding mix. The album is produced by the band’s Ben Romans Hopcraft alongside Jamie Neville.
Talking about the first track to be taken from the album, ‘Fashion Week’, which is a joyous account of fashion’s die-hard fans rather than the more visible arrivistes or dilettantes, Clams said: “Those that will do anything to become that thing. That creation. And live it. It’s real artistry when you don’t have the means and you’re doing it. You’re hustling to get on the guest list, you get in, you’re done up by means that you can’t really afford, whatever you do… It’s a celebration of people who will do whatever to look good and feel good and step above wherever they are in their own minds.”
A legendary live act, driven and led by the charismatic Clams Baker Jr, they are one of the most exciting bands to come out of London in recent years. Too Cold To Hold sees the band stretch out, open up and produce their most dazzlingly eclectic and honest album to date.

David Lance Callahan's artistry is now in its third distinct iteration, after The Wolfhounds (exponents par excellence of the C86 sound) and Moonshake (who, with a small set of peers, pushed alchemical post-punks innovation into a sound whose influence seeped into genres far beyond 'rock'). Where next? Down To The Marshes partially relies, as did the two volumes of English Primitive which preceded it, on strands of vaguely arcane British Isles folk music. Still, the album's subjects, tone and references are almost entirely modern; the presence of Indian modalities, for example, seems to dutifully acknowledge the country's post-war multicultural make-up . . . in case you've forgotten that this is modern music made with an eye to the future, whatever that may bring. That said, Down To The Marshes, is somewhat brighter, almost optimistic in a manner that the two previous albums were not, though with an slight ambiguous tone. "Down To The Marshes" has a joyous feel (particularly if one's aware that Callahan is a professional writer on ornithology), "The Spirit World" is welcoming, in spite of its cynical but brilliant lyrics. A slight updating to WH Auden's poem of German Jews fleeing the Nazis, "Refugee Blues", shows the underlying impulse behind it to be - tragically - as modern as ever. "Robin Reliant" soars, swoons and harkens back to the sound of Moonshake, and "Island State", the album's ambient folk ode, closes the album perfectly. You'll want to start it again. There are other treasures, of course. Recorded in Valencia, Spain alongside Pram / Fall / Nightingales drummer Daren Garratt and a plethora of guest musicians from various countries, Down To The Marshes is a masterpiece of writing and performance from one of Britain's foremost musicians

Dave Trumfio grew up playing music in a suburban Chicago basement, but his native talent soon found him producing talents as diverse as house pioneer Mr Fingers, the legendary The Pretty Things and legendary reggae act Niney The Observer all within months of his first real go behind the mixing desk. Dave soon opened a studio in Wicker Park, just as a small contingent of cult heroes who lived there for cheap rent and cheaper bars - Liz Phair, Urge Overkill, Tortoise et al - burst into acclaim. Dave looked further afield - Billy Bragg & Wilco, Mekons, Captain Beefheart’s Gary Lucas, acts from Iceland, Australia, the UK. One afternoon Dave and his brother Harry recorded nine songs as Pulsars
Within weeks, the band opened for Oasis and was courted by ten labels, and soon signed sevenfigure deal with Almo Sounds - founded by A&M owners Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss - the largest deal ever offered to a new Chicago artist. The band played with Sean Lennon, Blur and Supergrass and toured Japan four times, where they were hailed as heroes of subversive minimalist pop . . . but Almo Sounds’ promotion deal with Geffen fell apart just as Pulsars began a tour with Weezer. Promotion was pulled, and radio support collapsed in a mere moment. And that was it!
We are reissuing their debut in its intended original form, with the ominous 'banned' cover and early, edgier mixes of some tracks, now available for the first time on vinyl.
Rolling Stone: "One of the gems of the mid-Nineties alt-rock gold rush, the lone album by the brotherly duo the Pulsars is a himmering collection of blissed-out synth-pop peppered with references to long drives to Wisconsin, pet robots and S&M . . .”
Trouser Press: “The album is one of the singular musical accomplishments of the ’90s.”
