After being swept-up in the mid-90’s major-label alternative craze, the band turned in their more mature and developed sophomore effort, The Proximity Effect, to Elektra Records in 1998. As happened to multiple bands of the era, the major label didn’t know what to do with the more developed sound and, while released in Europe to great reviews, the band was dropped from Elektra along-side other now-notable Elektra alums Spoon, Ween and more. A protracted battle with the label eventually led to the band finally getting the rights back to the album and in 2000 they released it on their own homegrown label MarDev Records..

Um, Uh Oh is the result of the last ten years of Elbogen’s experiences with failing relationships, both musical and otherwise. It is also his best record to date. It’s weary and blue-noted, revealing, personal and pained and there’s expressiveness in his performance absent from previous releases. In fact, it’s difficult to fathom that the same songwriter that once wrote the sugary frivolity of the early Say Hi material could have written such a mature collection of songs.

Lubomyr Melnyk returns with his new album ‘Rivers and Streams’, the embodiment of his signature style Ukrainian pianist Lubomyr Melnyk has often felt that his unique Continuous Music playing is akin to water – flowing and ever connected. As he further developed his technique, and the more the notes flowed, the closer to water he felt. “I found my hands and arms and everything inside them changing from normal muscle and flesh to well... water.” With his latest album, ‘Rivers and Streams’, Lubomyr focuses deeply on this connection to water, to the point where the music itself begins to embody its liquid form. Produced by Robert Raths and Jamie Perera, the album flows seamlessly from the live recordings of ‘The Pool of Memories’, captured in a church, to pieces entirely born in the studio, such as ‘Sunshimmers’ and ‘Ripples in a Water Scene’, which feature Perera on acoustic and electric guitar. Amorphous, ever-changing, Lubomyr as performer becomes subsumed into the natural ebb and flow of the keys as the album drifts between nascent upstream trickles and deeply reflective passages through winding river valleys. The album reaches its climax in ‘The Amazon’, a 20-minute piece dedicated to the world’s largest river. Raths invited Korean flautist Hyelim Kim to guest on the first part, before Lubomyr closes the album with cascades of arpeggio figures, stretching across the breadth of the keyboard with rapid virtuosity. Following on from 2013’s ‘Corollaries’ album and last year’s ‘Evertina’ EP, Lubomyr’s latest offering compounds upon his existing fluid signature style, and breathes an organic vitality, both nuanced and thoughtful. "In the body of the Continuous Piano Master, the fingers and the hands turn into Water, Air and Stone. These are the three manifestations of the Continuous Technique. And for the Continuous Pianist, the fingers physically transform the music into one of these three elements. The greatest of all miracles in the universe is Water. It is also, I believe, the rarest of all physical things in the universe. Water is the most magical and the most mysterious of all things we know! Kiasmos reveal new EP featuring three new original tracks and a Tale of Us remix Following on from their Record Store Day ‘Looped EP’ release, which featured remixes by Dauwd and Lubomyr Melnyk, Kiasmos – made up of Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen – return with three new tracks and a remix by Tale Of Us. Recorded in various locations including Reykjavík and Berlin, the EP opens with ‘Drawn’, a four-minute percussion fuelled track with gentle piano motifs. ‘Gaunt’ features the addition of ambient synths and a drum loop, underpinned by slow-moving chords. Title track ‘Swept’ which the duo offered to fans as a surprise gift in form of a free download card at previous show dates, showcases a more club-oriented beat structure alongside Kiasmos’ signature emotive instrumentation. Closing the EP is a remix from Berlin-based duo Tale of Us who met Kiasmos in London and twist the original downbeat title track into their distinctively dark aesthetic. Pulsating hats and a driving bass loop add pace as the track builds toward an epic breakdown. The ‘Swept EP’ will be released on 12”/DL via Erased Tapes on November 20th, 2015. 'Striking, graceful and completely naked…' (9/10) – Clash ‘Sumptuous electronica from the Arctic North’ (8/10) – Uncut ‘Light orchestral touches and piano phrases radiate around the production's soft edges’ – Pitchfork ABOUT THE ARTISTS: Kiasmos is made up of Icelandic BAFTA-winning composer Ólafur Arnalds, known for his unique blend of minimal piano and string compositions with electronic sounds, and Janus Rasmussen from the Faroe Islands, known as the mastermind of the electro-pop outfit Bloodgroup. Based in Reykjavík, Arnalds used to work as a sound engineer, often for Rasmussen's other projects, where the two musicians discovered their common love for minimal, experimental music. Tale of Us are Berlin-based DJ and production partnership Karm and Matteo who are currently re-writing the rulebook for deeply moving, emotional electronic music. Together they share a sonic vision that pulls together elements of house and techno with influences from pop, nu-disco and even rock music. While all of their productions are instantly recognizable as Tale Of Us, these range from straight-up dance floor jams to low-slung ambient tracks and more abstract compositions. While both originally hail from North America, Karm was born in Toronto and Matteo in New York, they moved to Italy as children, which is where they met and formed the close working bond that they now share.

Herva is the artist name of Hervè Atsè Corti. He lives in relative seclusion from the dance music world in the Italian countryside around Florence and is one of the most intriguing producers to work in house and techno for a while. His early musical life as a drummer, plus his extra-musical interests in engineering and electronics has informed a unique, freeform, and very tactile approach to dance music. It’s house and techno that doesn’t adhere to the usual influences of Detroit, Chicago or Berlin.

The album he’s made called ‘Kila’ (the Swahili word for 'everything') was put together using software and hardware that he often modifies, with a mixture of beats and samples punched in like old-school hip hop and synths and effects that give his tracks the feeling of dance music that's been teased apart, smudged and smeared. The music is relaxed and warm but simultaneously abstract and punctuated with ragged detail and gritty disruption. He’s been in demand as a producer for a while now and has recently remixed Berghain resident Nick Höppner’s latest release. "You hear my music, you get to see how my brain works" he says. The album moves across tempos, from the floaty upbeat disco of ‘All Good On Your Side’ to the full throttle electro of 'Seat Behind Mirrors’ which gently gives away to a looping Burundi vocal. Then down to the old-school hip hop and wonky ooze of ‘Mistakes Dealer’. The track ‘Fading Above Smoke’, is held in place by a repeating drum pattern while synths and samples scrape and wrap themselves around the rhythm. ‘Dust Cover’ approaches the sound of early Pole, as if it had been described to him but never heard, sending digital grit and glitches across a low-slung bassline and opaque dubbed-out chords. The album finishes on the overloaded climax of ‘Fog’, which runs awkwardly edited samples over a loose drum tattoo, with enough restraint to keep the track flowing. PLANET MU RECORDS WWW. HOUSE OF AGES CLASSIC, RARE & UNRELEASED DANCE MUSIC SELECTED BY JEREMY NEWALL About Back in the early 1990s house music was having perhaps its most fertile and creative period. The original house from Chicago had blown up back in the ‘80s and left nothing short of a cultural revolution in its wake, with regional variants springing up all over the US, the UK and Europe. London in particular was a global hub for house music, with a whole slew of clubs and a long established underground scene that had taken house to its heart. A key mover-andshaker was a young Jeremy Newall, who worked successively at a whole bunch of record stores including Catch-A-Groove, where the likes of Tony Humphries would come and hang out when in town (Humphries used to record his shows at a flat above the shop with a wide-eyed Jeremy soaking in the vibes), and latterly Release The Groove, where he could be found well into the twenty-first century. A close association with Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson saw him repping for the big fella when Trouble was unable to do his Kiss FM radio show, and as the resident alongside him at Trouble’s much loved Loft Sessions in Camden. He also played on many pirates, at all the best parties in London, Europe and beyond. Jeremy’s position as the go-to guy behind the capital’s hippest record store counters saw many visiting US jocks passing him records that barely saw the light of day in a scene where superb new tunes were coming thick and fast. Therein lie the roots of this compilation … a collection of overlooked, unreleased, and just hard-to-find gems to put alongside some of the better-known and overplayed classics of the era. With Jeremy’s beloved New York vibe predominant, there are also productions here from Chicago, the UK and elsewhere. Some tunes which DID hit relatively big back in the day like UBQ Project We Can Make It and Susan Clark Deeper are represented here by alternative mixes (the latter from the criminally under-rated Benji Candelario); those who only know of Roger Sanchez as a big-room commercial producer/DJ might be surprised to know that his early days were marked by some of the deepest productions around (check his mix of Tribal House Mainline); ditto Sandy Rivera, here in his early KOT persona, while an unreleased track from ‘Mad’ Moses predates his mid-90s heyday. UK house hero Jimi Polo’s Take Me Higher only ever appeared as a poor quality bootleg, while Hollywood Beyond’s track became a classic at New York’s Shelter club and is revived for no better reason than it’s due a revival. There’s an early track from Soul Dhamma that never came out, linking this to the later ‘90s period, Jeremy’s own exclusive mix of Karen Anderson I Work Hard To Love You, and much more besides, all evoking an era when house’s roots in black music and affinity with disco were far more in evidence. Which, for anyone directed this way via ‘EDM’ explains our kinda ‘spiritual’ title … because, kids, house music, it’s a spiritual thing…

The Stutter Steps, a musical project from Pittsburgh, PA, is the brainchild of Ben Harrison (curator of performing arts at The Andy Warhol Museum), who has been writing songs and performing with various Pittsburgh-based musicians for over a decade. On this new record, Ben’s songwriting, guitar, and vocals take lead, accompanied by Cindy Yogmas (keyboards, vocals), Sean Finn (drums), David Horn (bass), and Jeff Baron (guitar – of Merge Records’ Essex Green & Ladybug Transistor). Recorded in October 2013 in a cabin in the Laurel Highlands, PA, the album contains both new and old material. Gary Olson, proprietor of the Brooklyn-based recording studio Marlborough Farms and also the founding member of Ladybug Transistor, produced and recorded the songs on site. Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500, Luna) graciously contributed slide guitar on the track “Fog”. Musical influences ranging from the sonic artfulness of the Velvet Underground to the wry playfulness of Beat Happening and the jangle pop of New Zealands’ the Bats, are reflected in songs that are at once honest and earnest, quirky and catchy.

Jonn Del Toro Richardson TENGO BLUES Jonn Del Toro Richardson grew up in Houston, Texas, and you can hear it in every note he sings and plays. You can hear the Latin music that is his birthright – his uncles, aunts and grandparents played in touring mariachi bands, and often got together to play on his back porch. You can also hear the influence of the country and R&B music that was played in his house, and particularly the blues that drifted strongly over his backyard fence from the next neighborhood and took hold with Jonn to be the centerpiece of his musical identity. Jonn started out playing in latin rock and cover bands, but soon turned to the blues, playing with a number of bands around Houston until he met Diunna Greenleaf and became a member of her Blue Mercy band. According to Jonn that was when everything started coming together: “with Diunna I learned how to perform and be the counter punch to her vocals, and along the way learned how to sing with conviction and truth. Together we were unstoppable.” They proved it in 2005 winning The Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge, where Jonn won The Albert King Award for Most Promising Guitarist. Jonn went on to perform with many of his blues heroes, and performed on Pinetop Perkins’ Grammy winning record Last Of The Mississippi Bluesmen with Robert Lockwood, Henry Townsend and Honeyboy Edwards. Jonn began playing with Otis Taylor, joining him on the soundtrack for the movie Public Enemy. In 2011 Jonn started working with blues mandolinist Rich DelGrosso, recording the critically acclaimed Time Slips On By, one of Down Beat Magazines Top Albums of 2011. Jonn’s next CD, with long-time friend and fellow Albert King Winner Sean Carney, Wild Ride provided a greater showcase for his formidable guitar playing and powerful vocals. Jonn and Sean have toured extensively both nationally and internationally with this critically acclaimed CD. And now, Jonn steps up with his long-awaited personal debut, TENGO BLUES. Jonn wrote all the songs. The natural choice to produce this record was Anson Funderburgh, who also contributed some rhythm guitar and co-wrote two songs. String Noise The Book of Strange Positions Conrad Harris and Pauline Kim Harris, the husband/wife violin duo comprising String Noise, have built a reputation as relentless contemporary music advocates with a propensity for the most intense and advanced classical music of today. As performers they have championed the work of extreme contemporary composers such as Bernhard Lang, Eric Lyon, and John Zorn. This release goes back to the roots of String Noise. Between 2009-2011, Eric Lyon composed Noise Triptych, the first work written for the as-yet-unnamed duo. Lyon then provided the moniker String Noise, and the duo made their debut at the 2011 Ostrava New Music Days festival. This release presents Noise Triptych, and its follow-up composition, The Book of Strange Positions. But even in the world of the infinite moment, we cannot choose the feather of our bird and the pigeon may long to be the goose, the donkey the pigeon and so on. Furthermore as our world blossoms out of this single tick in time, it is for one pigeon a swirling romantic flood of euphoric possibility and fascination, for the other an inferior life of shitting on everyone from the sky, awkward and ashamed, resigning themselves to be the wretched nuisance they are painted as by those they shit on. So just as an entire genre of music can be born out of one sped up ten second breakbeat, a full symphony orchestra can come together in harmonic unison to create that perfect moment in time, thus every moment can give birth to an entirely new world, and every world can house the perfect moment, and just as that breakbeat may be broken beyond any recognition, that orchestra may combine to bring forth a dissonant barrage of colossal sorrow, and so the moment disintegrates it's world and that world suffocates the moment under it's collapse.
