Van Dyke Parks Songs Cycled

NATIONAL release date cd/LP: 7.23.2013 Legendary artist, composer and producer Van Dyke Parks is pleased to announce his first new album of material in over twenty years, Songs Cycled, set for release July 23rd on Bella Union. Following the success of his classic album reissues last year, Songs Cycled contains Parks' first new material since 1989, expanding even further Parks' pioneering, and still unique, handle on Americana with the crystal clarity of a 21st century recording. All this in Parks' 70th year, which makes Songs Cycled extremely special indeed in so many ways. Alongside new originals such as 'Dreaming of Paris', 'Wall Street' and 'Missin' Missippi', new collaborations such as 'Sassafras' and 'Money Is King', there are new cover versions and re-recordings of older tracks, and guest vocals from Gaby Moreno and Irana George. A musical prodigy and child actor, a session musician, composer, soundtrack writer, arranger, lyricist, and singer, Van Dyke Parks been a significant contributor to several decades' worth of classics, including a handful of unassailable masterpieces. He's perhaps still best known for penning the lyrics to The Beach Boys' legendary masterpiece 'Smile'. More recently, his arrangements helped turn Joanna Newsom's second album 'Ys' into an epic. But the true riches of Van Dyke Parks' legacy remain his first three solo albums: Song Cycle (1968), Discover America (1972) and Clang Of The Yankee Reaper (1975).

The Jim Jones Revue will release their eagerly anticipated third studio album The Savage Heart in the US/Canada through Red Eye Distribution on 7/23/13. The Savage Heart was produced by Jim Sclavunos (of Grinderman / Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds) and mixed by Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys, DJ Shadow, The Heavy) with spiritual advice & pre-production by the legendary Nick Lowe. Their most exhilarating work to date, The Savage Heart expands the sonic remit of The Jim Jones Revue beyond their renowned brand of manic rock ’n’ roll to explore a virtual “heart of darkness” of new musical territory in the form of tribal stomps, field hollers, a capella rave-ups -- even a fuzzed-out feedback-laden doo-wop ballad! The Savage Heart swaggers with all the balls-out rocking of its predecessors, but offers too an expansive vision of the band, with a wider palette of sounds and even socially conscious lyrics. “While the group look back into the roots of rock ‘n’ roll, we’ve never gone backwards in what we do,” says Jim Jones. “It’s always about pushing things forward for us.” Contributing mightily to the vigorous sound captured on The Savage Heart is Henri Herbert on keyboards. Henri, who joined the band in 2011, has diversified the band’s keyboard vocabulary, drawing not just on the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard but Otis Spann, Pete Johnson and Albert Ammons as well. “He’s the Professor of Piano,” affirms Rupert Orton (guitar). “His wealth of knowledge is astounding. He’s really re-shaped our approach.” Notorious for their maniacal high-energy shows, The Jim Jones Revue have been described by MOJO as “the greatest rock n’ roll band in the world right now”. Stay tuned for live shows in the US and Canada later this year.

Brandt Brauer Frick BROKEN PIECES / SKIFFLE IT UP incl. Remixes by MOUSE ON MARS / DOLLKRAUT / MAX GRAEF

Sometimes what you don’t do is as important as what you do. Brandt Brauer Frick have made name for themselves producing techno without the technology, using classical instruments in preference to synthesizers and computers. It’s a negative that’s had positive results. On the Berlin trios third album ‘Miami’, it’s again what Brandt Brauer Frick are not doing that is once again important: they aren’t slavishly following the formula of its two predecessors. “‘Mr Machine’ (2011's sophomore album) the record made with the (ten piece classical) ensemble, especially was very planned and strict,” says Paul Frick. “We wanted to be more spontaneous this time. We wanted to do something very different, more dark and more rough. We wanted to write songs rather than tracks that slowly evolve.” Now they’ve delivered a solid 12” EP “Broken Pieces / Skiffle It Up” remixed by Mouse On Mars, Dollkraut & Max Graef. ‘Broken Pieces feat. Jamie Lidell’ has been reworked by electronic pioneers ‘Mouse On Mars’ – one of the few electronic bands to stand the test of time “We synthesized every sound bit from our organic friends BBF and tuned Jamie's voice to the wrong pitch. Then we slowed down the tempo and had the washing machine do the arrangement. The final edit was made in a car while being on tour in the US, somewhere between the red woods and Salt Lake city. may the promis live forever“ Andi & Jan (M.O.M) “I made two very different remixes of the same track, combined them and created a spacefunk classic“ Max Graef “Broken Pieces, glued back together in a very melodic way using some classic instruments, a lot of swing and Jamie...“ Dollkraut

Artist: Mark Pritchard Title: Ghosts 7.23.2013

WRP9341

Overview “A unique kind of energy - familiar enough to nod your head but warped enough to feel like something special.” – Pitchfork

The multiple aliased and prolific Mark Pritchard returns with the first in a forthcoming series of 12” singles on Warp.

Format: 12” Boxlot: 15 Price: $10.99 Packaging: 12” sleeve

Previously making the rounds in the VIP DJ sets of tastemaking producers worldwide, Ghost takes over where 93 Million Miles left of. Departing slightly from the Detroit-influenced sound of 2009’s When Machines Exceed Human Intelligence with an approach that’s synth-based yet still organic. Blending chaotic elements of air horns, drum rolls, and echoing vocals, Pritchard nods subtley at dancehall and dub while maintaining the distinctive driving rhythms that have made him a staple for over 20 years.

Aidan Knight SMALL REVEAL Two years can go by in the blink of an eye, or can stretch into a prolonged series of crosscountry tours, weddings, funerals, rehearsals, odd jobs and getting your drivers license. Just ask Aidan Knight, the 26 year old songwriter and namesake of the Victoria-based band who unveil their second album “Small Reveal” The roots of “Small Reveal” began in early 2012, in a similar rustic surrounding to that of their critically acclaimed debut album “Versicolour”: A cabin without running water on in rural British Columbia. Armed with hundreds of pounds of recording equipment; Olivier Clements, Julia Wakal, David Barry, Colin Nealis and Knight (via many wheelbarrows) set up in a gorgeous forest location with a cast iron stove and nearby swimming hole. After a week tucked away from society, armed with 15 brand new song ideas, they returned home to Victoria, and spent the next 5 months quietly reworking the music. In May of 2012, the band joined up with producer and engineer Jonathan Anderson who was at the helm of “Versicolour”. Using the natural reverberant sounds of hanging guitars in an empty music store and the echoing distance of hallways in family homes, Knight and his collaborators created the swirling cinematics of “Small Reveal “ in a whirlwind 10 days in 10 different recording spaces. “Small Reveal” presents the themes of inward thought and creativity, escapism, longing for success, and belonging. The result is an exciting yet dreamy, lushly-arranged record that swells and ebbs around the captivating focal point of Aidan’s voice. GENRE : POP/ROCK FILE UNDER: “G” Grumbling Fur “T” Tucker, Alexander RELEASE DATE : July 23, 2013 Daniel O’Sullivan and Alexander Tucker are long time friends and collaborators. Both artists are veterans of the UK experimental underground: O’Sullivan as a member of Guapo, Ulver, and Æthenor (with Stephen O’Malley), and Tucker with Imbogodom and as an eclectic (read: Yeti) solo artist. On their newest album as Grumbling Fur, Glynnaestra, they have crafted an avant-pop album assembled as one would a collage. This structural foundation is built up via an eclectic array of instruments, both acoustic and modified, to pulsating electronic sounds. Add to this mix the pair’s entirely modern shamanistic meta-narratives, and the result is a contemporary psychedelic pop delight. Grumbling Fur’s world is an innovative one, where every sound contains its own unique story, and is driven by the overarching melody and harmony. O’Sullivan and Tucker write pop songs for the sophisticated palate. The songs on Glynnaestra have many reference points, from the paean to Blade Runner on the anthemic “Ballad Of Roy Batty”, to the distant siren song of the ice-cream van on “Cream Pool”, and even slow burning, molten protohip hop on “His Moody Face.” Mutant electronic rhythms bubble and pop underneath swathes of strings. Glowing at the centre are the duo’s unmistakable vocal harmonies, which seem almost telepathically entwined. Throughout, their experimental pedigree shines through, from the mournful cello and guitar of the title track to off kilter percussion of “Alapana Blaze.” Grumbling Fur surfaced with debut album Furrier (Aurora Borealis) in 2011. The record was an assemblage from a one-day recording session involving Jussi Lehtisalo of Circle and Pharaoh Overlord and Dave Smith of Guapo, resulting in a suite of psychedelic mantras. The first outing as a duo, Alice, is a session recorded live in the studio for Southern Records’ Latitudes series in 2012, and was inspired by a psychoactive houseplant and the rabbit hole therein. As their history attests, this is a group unbound from the restrictions of traditionalism and unafraid to shed the pretence of pure abstraction. There’s a tradition of subterranean Englishness at play, harking back to This Heat’s Deceit and Eno’s Another Green World. In their first fully realised album as a duo, the process and texture ripple with a kind of electro-gnosis. Glynnaestra herself (an archaic goddess divined by Tucker and O’Sullivan) presides over the record, transcendent and sphinx like: an apt muse for an album of such lovely and powerful music.

Dustin Wong & Takako Minekawa Toropical Circle Thrill - 345 LP List $18.99 BOX LOT LP 25 Vinyl is non-returnable

*9037H-ADEFBg

GENRE : POP/EXPERIMENTAL FILE UNDER: “W” Wong, Dustin “M” Minekawa, Takako RELEASE DATE : July 23, 2013 TRACK LISTING:

Toropical Circle is a brand new collaborative album from Dustin Wong & Takako Minekawa. Through his solo albums on Thrill Jockey, Dustin Wong has taken listeners through an intricately colorful wonderland that he creates with only his guitar and a bank of effects pedals. Takako Minekawa is a Japanese musician who has been active since the ‘90s, exploring the possibilities of experimental pop with albums released on Polystar and Emperor Norton (Roomic Cube, Cloudy Cloud Calculator, and Maxi On) The two met in the Summer of 2011 when Takako saw Dustin play in Tokyo. He was a fan of her music from the past, and through that meeting they began corresponding. They found many similar interests in music, the universe and mythology. When Dustin was in Japan they went into an hourly rehearsal studio to do some loose musical improvisations, which lead to a natural collaboration. Toropical Circle is the result of that collaboration and was produced and recorded by Wong and Minekawa at home in Toyko. The music strikes a lovely balance of homemade coziness, experimentation and charming humor. Their musicality and human qualities galvanized into something brilliantly heartwarming. Dustin Wong’s minimal-yet-imaginative sounds combined with Takako Minekawa’s graceful and eloquent voice, samples, drum machines and keyboards resulted in a colorful and fantastic world. The sounds roll and change organically, gently taking the listener by the hand through a forest and to the sea.

Goldberg draws from an array of pop artists and periods, from 60’s bubblegum to 80’s synthpop and 90’s indiepop, fusing these in sophisticated and novel ways . He has further developed his gloriously ragged anthems to reach new heights of nonchalant perfection. Having uprooted from Australia to New York, the Big Apple has replaced Melbourne as inspiration . His lyrics reveal tales of everyday life, somehow more absurdly unhinged, humorous and poignant than the lives of his peers. All coming from a man with a clear mission to update the rock’n’roll template as SACW e sprawl across the generations, linking the vintage swagger of the Velvets to the off-kilter pop perfection of the Only Ones by way of the Stooges and Television.

NYC was ablaze with talent during the 50s.Old style bluesmen, hip cool jazz players, crooners and balladeers, jump ‘n’ jive groups, solo performers – there was more than enough work for everybody. The melting pot of styles and musical approaches helped to form the new mainstream of the 60s: soul. This collection contains gospelbased blues ballads, uptempo dancers, vocal groups and duets, big bands, smaller combos, exciting one-offs - and everything in between.

No previous dance crazes could match the early 1960s for the sheer variety of dance fads: there was a veritable explosion of all kinds of rock ‘n’ roll and rhythm and blues dances and dance records, all emerging out of the popularity of the Twist. This survey covers some of the most distinctive and entertaining dances of that era up to the dance-crazed peak of 1962.

Explores the divide in black music between rural and urban, between jazz and blues and between secular and gospel. 57 breathtaking blues and spiritual tracks and some of the most impassioned, compelling vocal performances ever to be recorded. The accompanying illustrated booklet sets out the historical background and explains some of the technical features that make these beautiful songs the precursors of soul music.

Little G Weevil Moving

“I heard about Little G Weevil winning the 2013 solo/duo IBC so I was not surprised that his recording revealed very deep Blues. He somehow delivers intact the spirit and sound of Blues legends from 80 years ago. Then at our VizzTone showcase in May, jamming with him onstage showed his mastery of Blues in the moment and band-leading ability. A new Blues Star is here, he proves it.” – Bob Margolin Little G Weevil is truly an international Bluesman. Growing up in the outskirts of Budapest, Hungary, at a time when the changing political landscape brought the Blues flooding into Eastern Europe, he fell in love with the American Blues records of John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins, and more, and soon became a successful Blues musician in his own country. G felt the call of the American South, and emigrated to the US, landing in Alabama before spending a year washing dishes and playing on the streets of Memphis, where he continued to absorb the local music and form his own distinctive style, a mix of the Blues music of many regions of the Southern US. After living for a time in London, G now makes his home in Atlanta, Georgia. Little G Weevil’s two previous releases have already brought him international acclaim: “Weevil evidences a strong-willed musical intelligence and the individuality to make his autobiographical tunes easy to like.”
– Downbeat

“Little G Weevil is right on the money.”
– Blurt Magazine

“This is vibrant music from a passionate musician at the height of his creativity. A deep Blues immersion.”
– Blues In London, GB

“Little G Weevil is an amazing guitar player, a singer and a songwriter. He moves from Hooker to R. L. Burnside to Chuck Berry and old school Mississippi Delta without without breaking stride at all.”
 – Elwood Blues, aka Dan Aykroyd, House of Blues Radio Hour

-

Little G Weevil performs deep Blues in acoustic and electric settings, but recorded in the wake of his recent first-place victory as a solo performer in the 2013 International Blues Challenge, MOVING is a beautifully ambient, largely solo, acoustic Blues album. Says Weevil, “This time I’m focusing on my acoustic works that I have been asked to cut numerous times the past years. There are solo and band numbers just like on my previous releases with a little difference. No amps! I selected 12 songs, all my originals except “Let`s Talk It Over” which is a beautiful, old traditional. I`m very excited about this project. It gives me chance to play deep, raw Blues in very intimate settings.”

Tunnels is the solo guise of Eternal Tapestry’s Nicholas Bindeman. The Blackout was originally released in August 2011 and sold out quickly upon release. We are happy to bring the LP back this time on a limited white vinyl pressing with free download coupon. On The Blackout Bindeman steps away from the heady guitar wizardry of Eternal Tapestry to craft a pulsing and dark record steeped in cold dread with a pop sheen. Bass lines, often the centerpiece of the song, play alongside glistening, glass slipper synths and jagged guitars, seeping like silver lined shadows into disaffected vocal incantations. Drawing on a disparate palate of sounds from various facets of electronic music, his version of a new cold wave is a sound both novel and infectious. Taking after synth pop pioneers such as Charles de Goal and Crash Course in Science, with a hint of Throbbing Gristle, The Blackout still manages to resonate with the new. Tunnels join the ranks of Silk Flowers, Gary War, and others that call labels like Not Not Fun and Sacred Bones home, all the while taking shards of the dark ‘80s pop sound reminiscent of Gary Numan and The Cure, and reconfiguring them for the underground.

1996 : Tortoise’s landmark second album Millions Now Living Will Never Die is released. Featuring the famous 20 minute opener “Djed” and out of print on vinyl for far too long we are happy to finally offer it again. Pressed on high quality virgin vinyl and including all original artwork - a fully artworked inner sleeve and for the first time a download coupon! The majority of the album’s material was first conceived during an idyllic 10-day retreat in Northern Vermont, where the group were able to explore their ideas in a setting that fostered introspection and inspiration. Recording commenced immediately upon returning to Chicago at both Idful (now defunct) and the then new Soma Electronic Music Studios. Millions... was the first studio recording to feature David Pajo who fill the position vacated by Bundy K. Brown in late 1994. “Djed”...seems less a single piece than a highlight reel. Over the course of its 20 minutes, Tortoise cycle patiently from strength to strength, seamlessly incorporating Krautrock rhythms, dub-inspired studio effects, and minimalist tuned percussion...And what further distinguishes Tortoise from their many imitators is the casual way they make their genre recombination seem completely obvious after the fact, and how they make such meticulous studio work sound as organic as the tides.” - Pitchfork, Best Tracks of the 90’s
