2023 END OF THE YEAR SALE New West Records is rockin’ in its 25th year of existence. Throughout the course of those 25 years we have had the privilege of working with an amazing set of artists and musicians. Their art has always come first. It all starts with the music and ultimately continues through to the listener. Twenty-five years means that we have released quite a few records. New West has always taken pride in celebrating music in the physical format. Over 90% of our entire catalog has been released on multiple physical formats. With this many releases you can imagine there is a lot of inventory to keep track of and manage. We’d like to thank Redeye for helping take care of our precious babies for the last 5+ years. It has been a privilege for New West to promote and release this music with such a great company. We have always aimed to do so with integrity and so have they. We didn’t do anything too fancy for our anniversary this year. No stickers, tchotchkes or shirts. We threw a hell of a party in Nashville. You know if you were there that it’s all about the music. So, to celebrate all of this amazing music and the fortunate run that we’ve had over the last 25 years, we’re running a sale on all of the music that we love. East Village are one of the great lost bands, a group whose music has only grown in stature since their premature demise in the spring of 1991. Along with other legendary bands like Big Star and The Action, who also failed to fully stamp their mark whilst active, East Village made pop music that was timeless, but out of step with the musical environment around them. Originally named Episode Four, the band was formed in the mid-1980s by brothers Martin and Paul Kelly in the sleepy Buckinghamshire market town of Princes Risborough just forty miles to the west of London. They were soon joined by Johnny Wood (guitar/vocals) and Spencer Smith (drums) and by 1986 they had forged their brilliant, classic pop sound and recorded their first release, the "Strike Up Matches" EP, which has gone on to become one of the most sought after releases of the C86 era. By 1987 they had renamed themselves East Village and relocated to London where they recorded two EPs for Jeff Barrett's Sub Aqua label. The band gigged extensively through 1988 and 1989, including tours with The House Of Love and McCarthy. The 1989 collapse of Sub Aqua left the band without a label, but they recorded their debut album using money loaned by Bob Stanley, and were soon re-united with Jeff Barrett on his new Heavenly label, releasing their classic single "Circles." Just as interest in the band was building East Village played a sold out show at the New Cross Venue in South London only to end the set by splitting up on stage. The album that followed, "Drop Out" (1993), was mixed and released posthumously on Heavenly and has gone on to be hailed as a classic of its genre. The years that followed saw East Village gain a cult status amongst fans of indie music and prices of original pressings rose rapidly as demand outweighed supply. A singles compilation, "Hotrod Hotel," was released to great acclaim by Summershine in 1994, and now we're very happy to facilitate its first, long overdue, vinyl release.

The pair set out to blur the boundaries of genre with their unique brand of music, spearheaded by Webster’s Caribbean roots and fused with the soul and blues the midwest is famous for.

A striking stand-out of the band’s repertoire comes via their debut recording, laid down at Curtis Mayfield’s legendary Curtom Studios. The EP opens with Chi-Town Reggae - a super-charged blend of reggae and disco, led by Websters infectious vocal, steeped in soul and powered by a relentless rhythm section. Hail Jah follows closely, written on the hilltops of the outskirts of Kingston, Jamaica, it’s a deadly roots reggae missile that pays homage to Websters beginnings. Once dubbed by a local news outlet “Gypsy Fari are to Chicago reggae what Muddy Water is to Chicago blues” now remastered, repackaged and made available again for the first time since its initial release.

Record Record Label is set to re-release ‘These Songs Are Cursed,’ North of America’s debut full-length album on January 19, 2024. These Songs Are Cursed was written and rehearsed in a tiny basement practice space in Halifax and recorded in a little basement studio in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The studio session was a step-up from their first release “Elements of an Incomplete Map”, a 10-song EP released in 1998. Following the Eric’s Trip/Sloan formula, popular at the time in Halifax, with four singers/songwriters the material was flowing and “cursed” could have easily been a double album with hits like “We’ve Got It Sussed” and “In-Scituate” left on the cutting room floor. But the 13 songs and four interstitials that made the cut were made purely from the energy of wanting to be in a band, wanting to tour, and wanting to write songs together. Songs like “Central Port of Equal Times”, “Speech Is An Experiment”, “Rough Draft Korea” and “Route of Sorts” came together quickly in the basement, but others like “Built Sought Destination”, “Wall Monument” and “Extent of the Apse Outstretched” were flushed out in the studio. Soon after its release on Matlock Records, a German label, Rewika Records, signed the band and soon they were off touring Europe in a tiny Renault with a member of Trumans Water as their driver and de facto sound tech.

Keith Porteous, who was A&R at BMG Mu sic Canada, brought me to a bar called The Absinthe to check out a new band he was working with. What was immediately interesting about them was that, while their tastes were root-ed in ‘70’s rock, they didn’t sound retro. They had created a classic rock sound for their generation. What was also great is that they were four distinct personalities-four characters, like the Beatles or the Monkees. But they all dressed in matching outfits and did coordinated rock moves on stage. Amazing. I went to Moncton, NB and met the guys at an old schoolhouse that they’d wrangled to do pre-pro-duction. We spent a week or so workshopping their super cool songs and hanging out at their favorite watering holes. They had sold me with their live show and part of the trick of producing them was to try to capture that. I knew we weren’t going to do a lot of overdubs or ornate production. That week was an absolute blast. The guys were so funny and so engaging, just dripping with person-ality, which I knew was going to serve them well in the music business. I remember going to a Chinese Buffet with them and their girlfriends and watched them eat half of the food in the restaurant. I think the bill came to less than $100 for the nine of us. I still love the record and I wish it had made them world famous rock superstars. Every song on it is so uniquely them, they had perfectly distilled their influ-ences, both old and new, and I don’t think any other band could have made this record. I want to thank the legendary Rick White for recording those pre pro sessions and Jeff McMurrich and Kevin Doyle for their amazing engineering work on the album. And an occasional joke thrown in with some reflective disrespect. Over time it’s become clear– those that love this band do so for life. And even through long periods of radio silence, they continue to reach out with love and support, hoping for another installation in their musical journey, a reflection of their own hearts.

Ben Richter AUROGENY The two and a half hours of accordion, string quartet, and ensemble music on Ben Richter’s Aurogeny, the 2CD follow-up to 2017’s acclaimed Panthalassa: Dream Music of the Once and Future Ocean, are united by a focus on acoustic phenomena to create immersive sound-worlds of constant gradual transformation. CD1 focuses entirely on Richter’s unique approach to the accordion, with solo and multitrack works exploring just intonation, detuning preparations, and sliding register shifts, seeking liminal zones between pitch and rhythm to stretch time perception beyond the human. CD2 begins with the Koan Quartet’s masterfully concentrated performance of Aurogeny, a geologically paced, timbrally morphing string quartet, until the striking instrumental menagerie of Orogenesis erupts in raucous, sprawling post-rock joy, followed by Tethyscape’s eerie, distorted doom-drone dive back into the deep dark sea.

Martin Bramah, lead guitarist in The Fall, was the final original musician to leave the band and inarguably the most important factor in the band's original sound. What Bramah took with him on departure was a sort of hazy psychedelic vision featured so readily on The Fall's debut, Live At The Witch Trials, and continued through his work with Blue Orchids, even if that lineage was obscured somewhat by The Fall's popularity and consistent stream of releases. For Bramah, the decades after The Fall were fraught. After regrouping as Blue Orchids with fellow Fall castaways Una Baines and Rick Goldstraw), initial releases rose to notoriety with two caustic and intense 7" singles, The Flood and Work, along with the more varied collection of songs featured on their debut LP, The Greatest Hit (Money Mountain), which topped the indie charts and remains a touchstone for many artists. Personal issues within the band made progress difficult. The 12" EP Agents Of Change, introduced changes to their sound (in part due to their work with Nico - yes, that Nico). But after its release, silence followed. Bramah sightings were elusive - a solo on an album by Una's band The Fates, a 12" single with mesmerising songs performed, oddly, in a sort of reggae style. A short second stint in The Fall. You get the picture. Any semblance of a career only began with a series of archival and new releases starting in 2015: a new studio album, followed by another new album nearly every year thereafter. Ty Segall follows 2022’s acoustic introspection opus “Hello, Hi” with a deeper, wilder journey to the center of the self. With Three Bells, he’s created a set of his most ambitious, elastic songs, using his musical vocabulary with ever-increasing sophistication. It’s an obsessive quest for an expression that answers back to the riptide always pulling him subconsciously into the depths. Questions we all ask in our own private mirrors are faced down here — and regardless of what the mysterious “Three Bells” mean in the context of the album’s libretto, you can be assured that Ty’s ringing them for himself, and for the rest of us in turn. It’s a growing up and out of your head parable, but the farther out you get, the farther in you go. The two-headed suggestion of 2012’s Twins has grown ever more complex, as the outside/inside world of perception dissolves into a greater world of the senses — all six or seven of them! Since Ty deals in sounds, Three Bells rings with them most of all: sounds signaling the next phase, ringing to keep you stuck, or to set you free, with guitars like voices, questioning and answering the others in their turn. Since 2008, the singer/guitarist/puzzled panther we call Ty Segall has played out his hunger to be free over a dozen solo LPs and a series of other-named projects. In his music, freedom has taken the form of a rippling eclecticism in songs and production sounds, all of them conversing from album to album in a mad diversity of voices. Across the discograverse, 2014’s Manipulator and 2018’s Freedom’s Goblin precede Three Bells in double-album epicity, each unfurling its own multivarious tapestry in an atmosphere of gleeful octophenia, as Ty throws everything against the wall, delighting in how much he can stick there. With all fifteen songs brimming with perspectives, shape-shifting incessantly, not even waiting for a new song to work into the next idea, Three Bells steps into the shoes of both his previous doubles at the same time, designing finally to do the extended format justice. The acoustic songs of “Hello, Hi” had been a blast of fresh air; wanting another hit of that sweet air, Ty recognized that his body was craving to play the drums. This was a key that let him into the album — the songwriting happening on both guitar and drums. As the songs emerged, Ty pushed them out farther and farther compositionally, challenging the way they’d be played, then playing much of Three Bells in conversation with himself — a decision that further elevates the album’s conception. But you don’t get outside/inside all on your own — for Three Bells, Ty and Denée Segall collaborated on five of the songs. In Ty’s world, Denée forms the second self outside his self. And these selves radiate out into the world through other selves. Co-producer Cooper Crain, whose contributions to Harmonizer and “Hello, Hi” were deep, engineered and mixed most of the album, again bringing his individual vision into the process. Finally, some of the songs as written needed the kind of playing that Ty couldn’t get alone. On some numbers, Emmett Kelly’s bass parts not only addressed that need, but inspired the way the songs eventually went down. So it was when the Freedom Band was called in to play; their contributions transformed the material. LP Three Bells kind of goes beyond songs. The fifteen of them work together as a mosaic, creating the larger work at the same time as they stand on their own. Composing the album as a piece, Ty formed certain chord shapes over and over again, making thematic material that each song moves through in its own way, building a claustrophobic/paranoia CD vibe, cycling bold thrusts forward into ego deaths, the one-step-forward, two-steps-back patterns framing an overriding ask: what we can do to get past the back-and-forth conversation, to arrive at a place of acceptance. Three Bells takes Ty Segall’s trips so much deeper and farther than they’ve gone beCS for — a masterpiece of personal expression, expressed through words, music and production, parabolically addressing malaise with compassion in a flowing, unstoppable hourplus of intoxicating sound.

Recorded in 1971 with Ginger Baker behind the board and sitting in alongside fellow drumming legend Tony Allen, Why Black Man Dey Suffer was originally deemed too controversial for release by his label at the time. The title track is a history lesson on the oppression of the African man - detailing the litany of abuses they have suffered from being taken as slaves to having an alien people impose a new culture upon them, take their land, fight them, and set them against one another. The B-side is Fela’s ode to the poorest of Lagos’ poor that lived in the Mushin district; he contrasts the corruption of the upper classes with the humble lives of the people in Mushin. This edition is pressed on Iṣin Yellow (transparent yellow) vinyl.
Excuse-O isn’t just a showcase of Fela’s ability to build a groove that could fill a full LP side; it’s a masterclass in personal and political criticism wrapped in two exceptional extended grooves. The title track A-side is a jittery rhythm where Fela sings of the many small agitating things that he comes across that could lead to an argument, or if unchecked, escalate to a fistfight; the track culminates in his annoyance of finding another man chatting up a woman he just went to buy a drink for. The B-side is a denunciation of Nigerians’ cultural inferiority complex and how the use of “proper English” language affected all aspects of one’s life. This pointed commentary on post-colonial life is set in a smoother groove with call-and-response vocals driving the message home. This album marks the moment he moved away from singing exclusively in Yoruba and began to sing more in Pidgin, or as he called it “Broken English,” to widen the appeal of his music. Released in 1975, this album began Fela’s greatest and most prolific era. He had created and refined the perfect sonic blend that we now know as Afrobeat - lyrics that took on the social and political struggles of everyday people, drum rhythms he and Tony Allen honed to perfection, sharp punctuating horns, tenor and rhythm guitars, and call and response vocals. This album also follows his template of him using an entire side of an LP to build an unbreakable groove. This edition is pressed on Jabuticaba Red (opaque red) vinyl.
This album was Fela’s full-on sonic revenge on the military regime that attacked and brutalized him and his compound in Lagos twice in 1974. The raids on his Kalakuta Republic were an attempt by the Nigerian police and army to silence Fela. Brought to trial on trumped up charges with no substantive evidence, the court dismissed the case, set him free, and made him an even larger hero to the people of Nigeria. The album narrative delves deeply in the post-colonial corruption of Nigerian institutions and the grueling and brutal manner the police and the military treated all unfortunate enough to be caught up in their grip. American music legend Jim Kweskin continues to create vital, heartfelt music some sixty years after releasing his first album. His latest effort, Never Too Late, is a very special project that has Kweskin performing duets with female singers with whom he has collaborated over his storied career. Among these talented vocalists are Samoa Wilson and Maria Muldaur, who was a member of Kweskin’s pioneering Jug Band, a group that played at many Newport Folk Festivals and made multiple appearances on national TV shows. In fact, Jim Kweskin & His Jug Band was proclaimed as one of the most influential bands of the early Sixties. Another one of Kweskin’s singing partners is his granddaughter Fiona Kweskin, who’s making her recording debut on this album. Kweskin’s backing band also is predominantly female, and features the acclaimed instrumentalists: fiddler Suzy Thompson, dobro & steel guitarist Cindy Cashdollar, and harmonica player Annie Raines. Originally from Swansea, MA, the Tangerine Zoo formed just six months before writing and recording their first album. Once they turned down RCA and Atlantic for Mainstream, the group agreed to do one single and an album, one that’d take just 13 hours to complete. Inspired by Vanilla Fudge and the hippie scene in Greenwich Village, the band’s acid rock captured the same psychedelic sound bands like Orpheus, Ultimate Spinach, and Beacon Street Union were creating in Boston. After a promotional tour, the band went on to make just one other album before dissolving at the end of the ‘60s, leaving a true Bosstown artyfact behind. “Tangerine Zoo may be an orange happening, and have to be seen to be believed. n the Fall of 1993, between contracts with Capitol and RCA, The Smithereens ventured into Crystal Sound Studios NYC to write and record a new album for their own label. The results of those one month marathon recording sessions is this album, unheard by the outside world until now, and appropriately titled “Lost Album”. The Smithereens’ take no prisoners sound, reflecting their Garden State roots, has resonated with fans worldwide over the course of 17 albums and 2500+ live shows. They’ve also inspired generations of musicians, including Kurt Cobain, who counted The Smithereens as a major influence. Founded in New Jersey in 1980, The Smithereens have been creating electrifying, original rock’n’roll for 41 years. Zach Hill and Spencer Seim of Hella were teenage bandmates at the turn of the century. Their 4 piece band was being courted by major labels, and they were on an accelerated trajectory that tragically imploded when their close friend and front man developed a taste for heroin. In a short time, they lost what they had been building throughout their high school years. The two of them carried on, expecting to find other band members and return to a 4 piece lineup. Their style started to transform, organically attempting to fill the void left by the missing members. Zach was pushing the envelope rhythmically, and Spencer began to simultaneously play both rhythm and melody on the same instrument. The band name “Hella,” started out as a joke, but its meaning of “a lot” came to fit perfectly. Audiences were enthralled with the raw emotive intensity of Spencer and Zach’s playing. In 2000, they sent out a single demo to their favorite record label, Kill Rock Stars. It was accepted, and in 2002 Hold Your Horse Is was released under the KRS imprint 5 Rue Christine. For the next 7 years, they toured the world, and produced more than a dozen releases. Their live show was an athletic spectacle, the front row could expect to share their sweat and/or blood. Spencer and Zach went on hiatus in 2008, briefly emerging to release 2011s critically acclaimed “Tripper.”

There was all the time in the world to make art, and it was there, in the cabin, that Bitch began to write some of the songs that would appear on Bitchcraft. “It gave me space to think about the biggest version of myself that I could be,” she says of those early days in the cabin. The songs she wrote were a departure from anything she’d ever written before, and she began to craft huge pop tracks with the help of her trusty violin. Then, she moved to LA and Bitchcraft began to shapeshift again. In the time that followed, Bitch assembled a coven to complete it. She called on Anne Preven (Beyonce, Madonna, Demi Lovato) and God-des who helped her crystalize her vision in terms of writing and production. She called on Roma Baran (Laurie Anderson) to produce the violins on “Polar Bear.” She called on Melissa York (Team Dresch, The Butchies) and Faith Soloway (Transparent) to co-write a couple of the songs. The resulting record is one that is full of glorious pop tracks that go in unexpected directions. Just take opener “You’re the Man,” as one such offering. Here, a strident synthesizer crashes into a drum machine, and Bitch sings about owning your own power. The song started as a poem, one that Bitch first wrote as part of a New Year’s ritual with Ferron where she wrote about things she wanted to let go of and ripped them from her notebook and threw them into the fire. Meanwhile, on “Hello Meadow,” electric violins coalesce with birdlike synths, and Bitch recounts industrial capitalist hell, and the attempts to find beauty outside of it. It’s a song about mother nature as well as the onslaught of capitalism and its obsession with destroying the natural world. And on “Easy Target,” written during the Bret Kavanaugh trials, she explores what it means to find your sense of self worth when people try to bring you down. Bitchcraft is like Joni Mitchell set to a click track, it’s queer Cyndi Lauper. It’s neon pink, in your face, ready to hex you with its brilliance. It’s an unbelievably fun record that is extremely capable of breaking your heart a little bit. It also makes you think: about the state of the world, about evil politicians, about what it means to exist as a woman, and how to find joy along the way.

In a career that has taken him from the slate-mining towns of north-west Wales, down to the expat communities of Patagonia, up to the Mandan tribe of the Great Plains of North America and across to the Tuareg rock groups of the Saharan Desert, Gruff Rhys, one of Britain’s most beloved and successful singer-songwriters, has always been willing to follow an opportunity wherever it may lead him. And so it was that Gruff and his band – Osian Gwynedd (piano), Huw V Williams (double bass) and former Flaming Lips drummer turned Super Furry Animals archivist Kliph Scurlock (drums) – piled into a van to La Frette Studios, a recording facility installed in a 19th-century manor house on the outskirts of Paris, to record Sadness Sets Me Free in just three days. La Frette’s founder Olivier Bloch-Lainé regaled the group with stories from his time working with Brigitte Fontaine in the 60s and bringing Serge Gainsbourg’s go-to string arranger, Jean-Claude Vannier, into the pop world. Absorbing French pop history by night, by day Gruff’s new songs spilled out of the studio at a rate that exceeded even his own legendarily prolific standards. “It was a really intense period,” Gruff says of the sessions. “I’m trying to work as much in capturing moments as making pop confections these days.” Opening with the country leanings and a despondent caricature of its title track before careening into the Tropicália-tinged “They Sold My Home To Build A Skyscraper”, on through to the hymnal, hopeful “Cover Up The Cover Up” and then coming full circle with the defiant “I’ll Keep Singing”, Sadness Sets Me Free exalts the power of music to heal the individual and to effect change on a universal scale.

Emerging during an era in which upstart DIY talent was flooding the gates of electronic music, Howard’s voice was singular, as a brilliant artist always should be. Flying Lotus was quick to recognise his startling talent, as Howard’s shot-in-the-dark demo email to Brainfeeder Records was immediately answered by the label head himself, who quickly moved to sign him. Now considered a classic of the era, “Nostalchic” is a record characterized by its devastating emotional force, melding his beloved R&B and soul into elements of house and hip hop, all with the trademark Lapalux finish: infectious, lopsided swing and achingly deep texture. It’s only with the benefit of hindsight that the sheer weight and scope of “Nostalchic”’s influence on the electronic scene at large is visible. A torrent of imitators followed in his footsteps, and his influence was pervasive in the music not only of his electronic contemporaries, but stretched into the realm of hip-hop, repeatedly referenced and sampled. Lapalux, however, was the original architect. A decade on from its original release, the album sounds as vital, contemporary and infectious as it did then. Exemplified by the success of ‘Without You’ featuring Kerry Leatham – a woozy R&B classic and fan favorite that has been streamed a gazillion times and spawned a gazillion clones. Distant Intervals, the full-length debut from Brooklyn cellist and composer MIZU (fka Issei Herr), is an exploration of memory, dreams, and the infinite possibilities within imagined worlds. Composed and performed primarily through the vast sound-world of the cello, the album is built through layers of overdubbed improvisations, self-recorded entirely in MIZU's bedroom closet. There is an element of newfound wonder throughout the album’s nine parts; the sounds of a single cello, an instrument she has known intimately since childhood, are augmented and transformed through the infinite possibilities of digital production and manipulation layered and processed audio samples, tape loops, and synth ornamentation. Combining up to a hundred layers of overdubbed cello and processed samples, the resulting sound world is lush, vast, and orchestral in scope. A closing feature by rising vocal star Maria BC transforms and elevates MIZU’s string-centered sound world into a euphoric bodily dimension.
Classically trained as a cellist at Juilliard, MIZU composed the album during a period of musical and personal transformation - as she moved away from a traditional classical performance path and notated music, while also beginning a long-awaited process of gender transition. While rooted in her classical background, the music looks outward and beyond limitations of style and genre; while song titles reference staples of the classical repertoire and traditional musical forms, they capture the poetry and fantasy of inner worlds through their improvisatory and deeply personal spirit.

• A rerelease of the 1997 album Bastard, by Colin Newman. • Available on vinyl for the first time – and bio vinyl at that! • CD version includes a second CD with rare and unreleased tracks It was four years into the swim ~ label’s history before Bastard arrived. Like my previous albums, it was another collaboration – although this time only with my partner in life and crime, Malka Spigel. There was a point in the ’90s when British music journalists basically didn’t get dance music and would refer to it as “faceless techno bollocks”. It was that very attribute that Malka and I felt most attracted to. In instrumental music, you could be anyone from anywhere. The only thing that mattered was how good your tunes were. It took a while to get to the concept, which was essentially this: What if we subverted the whole ‘bloke from Wire’ thing and had a Colin Newman album without any actual songs on it? These days, this is not such a big thing, but it was hugely transgressive at the time. The language of Bastard is house, techno, breakbeat, drum and bass, and doubtless post-rock. The only singing is a one-line Malka sample on ‘Turn’. Not only did the album not play by the rules of what would these days be called music by a ‘heritage’ artist, but it didn’t play by the rules of dance music either. Back then, dance music artists didn’t mix up styles as they do today. The title is intentionally multifaceted, referring to several ways in which the album is a misfit – a cuckoo in the nest. But it never meant‘ Colin Newman is a bastard’ – even if Malka’s toy finger gesture on the cover tempted fate on that! Malka and I have done more work together on swim ~ – and, of course, there has been plenty of Wire activity after its second hiatus during the 1990s – but I never felt the need to do another solo album. I don’t crave attention and certainly don’t feel I lack ways to express myself. In many ways, it’s more creative to collaborate with others. There is joy and beauty in collaboration. And collaborating with Malka has become so effortless that we almost don’t know who does what in the work we create. This has led us to throwing open our partnership via Nanocluster events and albums where we build musical bridges and make partnerships that transcend the art. Maybe that’s the point? Surely, art should be about human connection and diversity of expression? TRACK LISTING: Few records have weathered the fast-moving, fickle trends in electronic music like those of Microstoria. The duo brings together two of the most prescient, playful minds in the German electronic underground – Jan St. Werner (Mouse on Mars) and Markus Popp (Oval). Their albums as Microstoria are considered foundational texts in ambient music while equally sounding just as cutting-edge now as on their initial release. Continually cropping up in “best of” lists from the likes of Pitchfork and FACT while finding new fans through remixes by Jim O’Rouke and Stereolab. After being long out of print and coveted by collectors, the duo’s cult classic albums init ding and _snd now receive the expanded reissue treatment as a double LP, featuring remixed sleeve artwork based on the original designs and a full remaster of each by engineer Rashad Becker. Microstoria’s creative process was as much about careful listening as composing, the duo working in a dialogue with their machines. Their first outing init ding (1995) captures the thrilling, anarchic energy of Germany’s experimental underground in the 90s, rendered in beautifully understated atmospheres. In those early studio sessions, Popp and Werner would cycle through synthesizer patches and effects settings while playing, sounds glitching and taking on new shapes with each turn to create moments of genuine surprise. Throughout the album the duo wrest paradoxically organic sounds from digital instruments, with everything from bird-like calls to aqueous washes of bass or fizzing strings that crest like rolling waves of warm analog thrum. The duo’s sophomore album _snd (1996) provided a subtle refinement of those earlier recordings, stripping back the dense layers of texture to play with space and tension, with an even greater contrast between light and dark. The album finds comfort in colder, deliberately digital soundscapes - the sound of neon lights illuminating the empty concrete of the city at night, or dial-up router glitch bathed in the warming glow of monitor screens. This is no mere wallpaper music, but living, breathing ecosystems of sound teeming with detail and tangible feeling. Nearly 30 years on from their original release, both init ding and _snd still offer thrilling new revelations with every listen. Much like the nature of their creation, these are records that reward deep listening. The expanded reissue of these two classic albums highlights their enduring influence and uncanny genius, standing essential titles from two artists still shaping the landscape of contemporary music today. Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Elena Setién uses her multi octave vocal range and delicate arrangements to create a universe where dream worlds converge with reality. Setién’s masterfully allegorical songs are both emotionally immediate and provoking. A musician’s musician, Setién has drawn collaborators from far and wide, from her improvisational duo Little Red Suitcase to more recent collaborations with Steve Gunn, Mary Lattimore, and fellow Basque musicians Xabier Erkizia and Grande Days. For Moonlit Reveries, a hallucinatory promenade of mood and rhythm, Setién is joined by renowned drummer/percussionist Glenn Kotche of Wilco. At the core of Moonlit Reveries is the inspiration that Setién and Kotche found in one another. The two met while Kotche was touring Spain with Wilco, Kotche having been a fan of Setién’s 2022 album Unfamiliar Minds. Immediately the two started discussing collaboration which Setién began by using a series of unique drum patterns from Kotche’s “A Beat A Week” series as the basis for tracks like “Surfacing” and “Asking”. Kotche then sent in fresh drum takes for select pieces that embellished the frameworks set by Setién. The songs of Moonlit Reveries also make use of more guitar than Setién previously had ever explored, which Setién traces back to Steve Gunn introducing her to the music of Bridget St. John. “What fascinated me right from the beginning, was the calmness in her voice and her low register. Her music inspired me to ..write songs with a guitar: there’s more space for the voice and the sound qualities of both voice and guitar kind of melt into each other.” Moonlit Reveries is an embrace of wonder, an ode to the alluring beauty, and glow of dream states. For Setién, dreams are to be appreciated. The compositions are speckled with otherworldly embellishments, from ghostly harpsichords to cavernous echoes to reverberating kalimba. “Shotns - Shadows: Songs from Testimonies in the Fortunoff Video Archive, Volume 3” is the latest collection (2024) in the Fortunoff Video Archive’s Songs from Testimonies project. The Fortunoff Archive is a repository of more than 12,000 hours of testimony from survivors and witnesses of the Holocaust. Starting in 1979, it is the oldest, continually operating organization to document the Holocaust through video testimony. Over the past three years, the Fortunoff Archive has worked closely with D. Zisl Slepovitch, a Belarusian-born and New York based composer, multi-instrumentalist, ethnomusicologist, and Yiddish educator to document the songs recounted in the Archive’s collection. As the Archive’s first musician-in-residence, Zisl located songs and conducted research about their origins. He then arranged and recorded versions with his ensemble, featuring renowned singer Sasha Lurje. Sasha, a Latvian-born Yiddish singer, specializes in performing and teaching old Yiddish singing styles. The result of this cooperation is an album of songs spanning the interwar period as well as from ghettos, and the camps. Originally, these songs were sung individually and collectively, but in survivors’ testimonies they are recounted or performed by individuals. They thus remind us that the survivor singing them represents all those who did not survive to sing again and remind us of the absence of the original audience. “Shotns - Shadows,” the third volume, features 13 new songs originally shared by Holocaust survivors in interviews conducted by the Fortunoff Video Archive. These songs were sung by survivors in five languages: Yiddish, Hebrew, Greek, Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) and Czech. The widely diverse compositions presented on the album recreate a multidimensional image of people’s lives and the multiple identities they carried. The songs were performed by Zisl Slepovitch (woodwinds), Joshua Camp (accordion, piano), Dmitry Ishenko (bass), Craig Judelman (violin), and Sasha Lurje (vocals). Liner notes include contextual information for each song, translations and biographical information about each of the survivors who originally sang the song in their testimony. is a Japanese free improvisation & avant-garde rock quintet formed in August 2022. Their performances are initiated by a 9hz brain wave emitted from a testee who has been brought into a deep meditative state via either hypnosis or acupuncture — a very relaxed but very alert state. nehan doesn’t begin until the testee has gotten into the state of “nothingness.” It is only then that the improvisation can begin. The role of improvisation has been key to all the musical projects of Masaki Batoh. In 2010, as Batoh was winding down the activity of his long-standing “heavy chamber folk” group, Ghost, he became involved in the design of a machine to generate sonic data based on brain waves. An acupuncturist as well as a musician by trade, his interest was spurred by the rhythms of the body and the brain, and a desire to access the “pulses” of brain waves to initiate improvisations. Following the release of Brain Pulse Music, Batoh toured Japan and the US, making demonstrations of his process using a local volunteer and guest performers, when available. Today, nehan arrive at their performance space prepared with a Brain Pulse testee, bringing a wide array of instruments including gongs, timpani, tabla and other drums and percussion, Crumhorn, bagpipes, mellotron, oscillators and additional sound effects. Their performance is a transformative electro-acoustic display that passes through the prism of music styles, from east to west, from traditional folk and classical to rock, jazz, and avant electronic. While nehan’s performance presentation invokes a sense of ritual, they understand their process as being far removed from any type of spiritual
endeavor — it has nothing to do with eastern thinking or any kind of religious ceremony — this is an action of improvisation, occurring in reality between the five musicians on stage, in response to the brain waves of an individual. For the personnel of nehan, Masaki Batoh asked players with whom he had good previous experiences in improvisation: Futoshi Okano (Ghost, Acid Mothers Temple, The Silence), Haruo Kondo (Espvall & Batoh) and Junzo Tateiwa (Ghost), along with female Brain Pulse testee Gozen on oscillators. The performance here, recorded live in August of 2022 at GOK SOUND in Tokyo, demonstrates their communal dedication to the improvisation. The players act as listeners and musicians simultaneously, inspired to make extended pieces of music out of the “nothingness” of brain waves. The possibilities of nehan’s chosen approach are almost infinite; an evening with nehan is only the beginning of their journey.

I first became aware of Josephine when I was living in Chicago and doing solo songs weekly at The Hideout. Hearing her sing for the first time is a pleasantly shocking experience for anyone, and I was an arm’s length away. She seemed very nervous. At one point she had to stop the song and asked if anyone had any water. I’m sure the presence of my bandmates and crew didn’t help the nerves. I handed her a bottle of water. She gave a polite thank you and carried on with her songs. Later I heard she had a band with one of her friends from Old Town School of Folk Music (I don’t know how true this is, this was just the word on the street). They were called Children’s Hour. The gal I was dating at the time knew all about them. So I went to see them. I don’t recall how I ended up playing drums with them but I remember how I felt: it was like putting on a gas mask and getting clean oxygen. The environment I was in was so pocked and cancerous, Papa M and Children’s Hour were my only life source. That sounds pretty heavy, I guess, and not entirely true. What I’m trying to say is that I could breathe fresh air when I was with Josephine and Andy. It was music I could understand. I could relate with the lyrics. At any rate, I gave the songs a simple pulse that stadium audiences could easily digest. I played a cocktail kit that I got for free. You know. The kind of kit where all the drums fit inside each other, minimal hardware. After our set, I’d run to the other side of backstage to start warming up with Zwan. It was a necessary duality. I also don’t recall how the recording happened, outside of me thinking that it was a good idea. I knew it was a great band, a real band, I knew it was pure. I had been spending a lot of time at Paul Oldham’s farm in Shelbyville, KY. Recording with Bonnie and just about anything that blew through town. I’m a shameless hoe! So at the end of my double-gigging campaign, we busted out all our songs in one day. Easy peasy. I added some bass lines for as many
songs as I could do quickly. Some songs I knew I would need more time to finish, because of the funky chords and whatnot. We didn’t have any time though. Not even to mix. I promised that when I was back from tour I would finish the bass lines and then mix it at my little home studio, Velvetone. Fast forward twenty years. The hard drive with the recording is long gone — ancient, kaput, thousands of miles away in g*d knows what landfill. Andy, however, still has the rough mixes. Hearing them with new ears I realize what a magical moment was captured, a moment of youth. So I tried to clean up the mono mixes, make the best of them. When, lo and behold, Paul Oldham comes to the rescue with all the individual tracks, preserved and able to be summoned on 2020 hard drives. Long story short, I buff and polish the tracks to create easy-to-digest stems for mixing — even ducking the instruments ever so slightly when the vocals come in. Sweetening them so that mixing will be naught but a skip in the park. Josephine and Andy travel to Nashville and transfer the digititus to simmering analog goodness and serve up delicious bowls of mixes. When I listen back, the only listening experience I can compare it to is Spiderland. It sounds like some young, forward-thinking, folks who are doing what they do best without any self-awareness. It’s not flawless, it’s not legendary virtuosity, it’s more like birds in the morning doing their damn thing. There’s a purity of intent that really means a lot to me. There’s no ambition or managers or bending for likes and followers. No image to project or traipsing about looking for agents or the burdening desire to be the next big thing. It’s pure music. After her stunning collaborations with Vincent Royer (for Mode Records), Jim O’Rourke and Christoph Heemann (both for Oren Ambarchi’s Black Truffle Records) Brunhild Ferrari returns to the scene with this new solo album. Extérieur-jour is comprised of two previously unreleased compositions, one being the title track the album is named after and the other “Le Piano Englouti (version original).” Extérieur-jour translates to “Outside Day,” and indicates an instruction for a film scene, a piece of cinéma pour l’oreille, a movie for the ears. It was recorded at Luc Ferrari’s Atelier Post Billig in January and February 2014. “Le Piano Englouti” (“The Sunken Piano”), another electroacoustic composition which was realized over a period of fourteen years between 1996 and 2010, also brings forth cinematic elements with sound sources recorded in places as diverse as a Greek island by the noisy Agean Sea, a Pachinko place and a quiet island in Japan. It comes across as a meditation on the loss and reappearance of memory and silence. The graphics for the album sleeve were created by the late Wolfgang Meyer Tormin, artist and composer and also father of Brunhild Ferrari. The album was mastered for vinyl from the original source by Jim O’Rourke.

Icelandic artist and musician Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson is known not only for his work with Stilluppsteypa but also numerous solo albums and collaborations with Swedish composer BJ Nilsen as well as several other artists. On Into the Second Half, his new solo album, recorded in 2022, Sigmarsson takes the listener into a calming yet mysterious world of sound. Starting from almost silence he creates a different state of listening that we could only find elsewhere when concerned with works of Robert Ashley. Carefully composed textures as subtle as the changes of light in the forbidden zone in Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker weave in and out of each other to make for a hypnotic ride.
