Redeye Label of the Month:
INTERNATIONAL ANTHEM RECORDING CO.!
PINEGROVE | FUCKED UP | IMARHAN
Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight This Issue: David Allen and Scottie McNiece, Co-Founders of International Anthem Recording Co.
Philadelphia (mostly, but also New York and DC), that they are constantly being called a “Chicago band.”
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? David: People usually call us a jazz label. We work really hard to push beyond that. Being “boundary-defying” is our goal, and I feel the Artists we work with truly achieve that.
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?
How did you personally get started in the music industry? David: The Midwest DIY/punk scene of the mid 2000s; playing in bands, organizing shows, making recordings and self-releasing them in whatever ways we had the means to.
When and where did the label begin? Chicago, 2012
What is the meaning behind the name for the label? Scottie: “The International Anthem” was the name of a song I wrote with my friend Becky Levi in 2010. . The name stuck with me and I knew I wanted to use it for something bigger someday, maybe an album or a band or something. . Couple years later, when David and I started talking about starting a label, my mind immediately went to “International Anthem.” David liked the sound of it too. I liked that it had 7 syllables. We both liked that the words had an explicit meaning: diversity, across boundaries, being unified by music.
How has the label changed since it started? David: When we started it was mostly just Scottie & myself, doing everything from producing the recordings and marketing materials, to assembling the LPs and shipping orders, and everything in between. We used to hand fold and glue every OBI strip on our LPs, even until 2019 we were doing this! All from a corner in our apartment or basement at the time… It has been beautiful to grow to where we are now, with a lot of help from friends and family along the way. We now have a dedicated studio and warehouse space in Chicago, and the opportunity to work with a bigger community of people in Chicago and beyond.
Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. Scottie: David and I are kind of co-principals of the label. . We both wear many hats. David does more on the production management, and operations/financial management. He also does a lot of mixing/mastering of albums we put out. I handle much of the A&R work, and artist relations in general. And have also been handling most of the “lawyering” myself for a few years lol. We also have Dave Vettraino, who does the bulk of the engineering these days - whether tracking at our studio in Chicago, or mixing/post on things tracked elsewhere. Vettraino also manages our warehouse and inventory. Alejandro Ayala helps us with marketing and digital distribution. He’s also become sort of our in-house photographer, really defining our label’s visual aesthetic. Lindsey Stepney-Wright helps us manage press and media inquiries. Jocelyn Brown runs our publishing co, and helps us with synch/licensing on the master side as well. Chet Zenor and Brian Seyler do all the shipping from our Chicago warehouse. Lisa Giordano works as an in-house booking agent for several of our artists. We have a handful of close collaborator / outside contractors who feel pretty critical to all our label’s operations as well. . Including graphic designer Craig Hansen who does finishing touches on all our releases, and Nicole McKenzie who manages UK press/radio, and Daniela Siemon, who does German press/radio. Our old friend David Brown has recently gotten involved too, helping us with indie retail marketing aka calling up record stores and trying to help us spread the good word on our releases. There’s honestly so many people who pitch in to help make this possible. . And most of the people mentioned above are part time employees, or outside contractors. . The functioning of our label requires the love and care and commitment of so many talented folks. .
Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? Scottie: A lot of people assume that every artist we work with is a Chicago artist. Chicago is very much the core, the heart, where we started and where our roots are. . But going back to 2016 we started working with artists outside of the city… I feel bad for bands like Irreversible Entanglements, a group that has always been based out of
Scottie: Haha well. . When we first started, we thought this would be a passion project that we could run on the side of our other business… We never thought we’d be spending more than 8-10 hours/week on it, and definitely never dreamed that we’d be pulling a salary from it. We just wanted to support artists that we loved and put quality pieces of art into the world, with no tangible expectations beyond that. . Things have certainly evolved since then lol. . Since then everything has become so multidimensionally more complex. . The core values and mission honestly haven’t changed, but now that sustenance is on the line for ourselves and many of our coworkers (coworkers including artists on the label), the short and mid term goals/ benchmarks/etc have become much more variegated.
We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? Scottie: You’re right, we love them all. . It’s hard not to say. IARC0001 and/or IARC0003 right now, the OGs, Rob Mazurek’s Alternate Moon Cycles and Makaya McCraven’s In The Moment. Because. . Before we recorded that music, we didn’t even have a label, nor did we have any plans to start the label. . We owe Rob and Makaya and those recordings for inspiring us to do this work.
What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? David: We originally didn’t intend to release color vinyl, but for jaimie branch’s ‘Fly or Die’ album she wanted to release a Pigeon Shit color vinyl, and how could we say no to that? It surprised us how much people responded to it, so we’ve kept doing limited color vinyl runs on the first pressing. Life’s short - we try to have fun with them.
How would you describe the average fan of the label? Scottie: Vinyl collector, weed smoker, jazz liker. Post-backpack hip hop fan and/or bored Indie Rock ex-pat.
Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own? Scottie: Yes. David and I in fact met each other by playing in bands who did house shows together, and we organized some tours together, and hence bonded over a shared work ethic. I played drums and he played bass (he also played drums). Mostly in the DIY/punk scene of the Myspace era. We both still have instruments at home and play recreationally in bands. . Personally, with all the label work, it’s hard to find time to play anymore, especially since I feel like this work exercises the same part of my brain as the drums do. When people ask me if I still play, I often say “yes, and the label is my instrument.”
In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days? Scottie: Very important. It’s also very important to remember how critical of a role that music, in general, plays in the existential / spiritual war we’re fighting against climate change aka evil/darkness aka human/earth exploitation. There are things done towards the proliferation of music that may seem to be wasteful in the short term, but in the grand scheme of things, the proliferation of that music may work to inspire a larger group of humans to make more responsible / less wasteful decisions towards the betterment of our planet.
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? Scottie: Streaming. It was just barely getting going when we started out. Now it seems like the main format that most artists are focusing on… I never would have believed then if you told me what it would be like now. .
Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: Scottie: Man… so many favorites. . It’s been so long since I’ve been to New Orleans. . I hope to get back some day. If/when I do, I’ll go into Domino Sound Shack, and buy whatever he’s got in his recommendations bin.

AOIFE O’DONOVAN AGE OF APATHY WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE CD/LP: JANUARY 21, 2021 Grammy award-winner, Aoife O’Donovan’s first solo studio album since 2016 was produced by Joe Henry and recorded at Full Sail Studios in Orlando, Florida. The co-founder of the trio, I’m With Her, continues her passion for collaboration on this album that includes guest appearances by Madison Cunningham and Allison Russell. The album’s singles include “Phoenix,” “Passengers,” and “Prodigal Daughter.” The Deluxe version of this album has a bonus disk with 8 of the album tracks re-recorded in the studio and performed solo acoustic by Aoife.

The 11 tracks on this record came together in an extraordinarily fertile few months, sparked by O’Donovan’s move out of New York in September 2020. Transplanted to the lush forests of central Florida, O’Donovan found something she’d never known before: the time and space to craft an album away from a packed performing schedule and the rigors of the road. Joe Henry’s suggestion to feature Madison Cunningham and Allison Russell on vocals took the music to places that O’Donovan could not have imagined alone. “Allison and Madi are so unique,” she says. “Having never sang together in person, they were doing what they heard, singing from the heart, as opposed to what I’d have told them to do in a typical studio setting.” On “Galahad,” Russell’s high tones manifested the ghostly figure of an Arthurian maiden; on “Passengers,” Cunningham added a winning electric guitar line alongside her iridescent vocals. Despite the success and fame of many musical projects – from Crooked Still to I’m With Her, from her Live from Here collaborations with Chris Thile to her two previous solo albums – this album still feels like a personal breakthrough to O’Donovan. “I love singing and performing so much that I’ve never really considered myself a songwriter in the same way that some people do,” she says. “But I’m really proud of these songs and the experience of writing them has really given me a new confidence.”

Yard Act formed in Leeds in September 2019 when Ryan Needham found himself temporarily living in James Smith's spare bedroom. Settling into a system of programming, looping and layering, the alchemy between the two created a base from which to build their complex and ever expanding narrative world. “Ryan is a vibe guy, whereas I overthink everything,” laughs Smith. “It’s been the greatest creative partnership I've ever had. When you find a groove that works, it just kind of looks after itself.” With just three hometown shows under their belt, world events intervened. But rather than letting the pandemic derail them Yard Act set up their own imprint, Zen F.C. and across the course of 2020 and into early 2021 released four increasingly coruscating, hilariously dark singles.
CAT NO: ZENFC007LP UPC: 602438649402
Now expanded to a four-piece, joined by Sam Shjipstone (guitar) and Jay Russell (drums), they’ve announced their debut album “The Overload”, set for release on 7th January 2022. Their inherent wit has been sharpened down into something that speaks to the times we live in, creating a statement of intent that survives on nuance, that manages to poke fun at society without punching down from a place of left-wing superiority or right-wing anger. The Overload is a political record, but in the same way that all great observations of human nature are – a messy, complex, knowingly hypocritical snapshot of our current state of play.

Huge support from KEXP, NME, Guardian, BBC 6 Music, Stereogum and many more. Touring the US in 2022 including headline shows in NYC, LA, SF, Boston, Seattle and festivals.

Release Date: 21st January 2022 The critically acclaimed debut record by Billy Nomates is now available in The Americas on exclusive white vinyl, not available anywhere else in the world. The vinyl comes housed in a deluxe spined sleeve with double sided printed insert and download card. Also released is 2CD exclusive to The Americas, which features the eponymous debut album on disc 1 and the critically acclaimed “Emergency Telephone EP” on Disc 2. The fierce, funny, outspoken debut album received huge praise and success in the UK and EU , with huge support from BBC 6 Music. This year came to a climax when she was asked by Iggy Pop to step into his shoes to cover his Christmas show and together with featuring on the new Sleaford Mods single ‘Mork n Mindy’. Billy Nomates has proved herself to be one of the most original and respected new artists coming through. The songs on her debut album all come from a place of defiance. Rebellion against Brexit. Against soul-sapping, dead-end jobs and zero-hours contracts. Against gender inequality, sexual harassment and festivals with obligatory female acts hidden in the small print. Billy’s songs lampoon the same bleak reality satirised by her beloved Scarfolk website and explored so abrasively in the fringe theatre she finds solace in. Musically, there are snatches of Nick Cave’s rumbling sprechgesang; the “off-the-wall-ness of musicians like Captain Beefheart”; Sleaford Mods’ febrile post-punk; the groovesome lofi art-rock of Sonic Youth; and the brassy Americana of Emmylou Harris. What dominates, though, is a feeling of release. Of letting it all out. The track ‘Supermarket Sweep’ features guest vocals by Jason Williamson of Sleaford Mods.

Launching Bob Marley and The Wailers career at Studio One also meant housing Marley in a flat in the studio compound, as well as employing Marley in an A&R role, checking out the latest American soul and jazz 45s that came out for Studio One artists to cover. In similar fashion Leroy Sibbles, lead vocalist with the Heptones, became the key in-house bass player after being taught from scratch by Jackie Mittoo.

“SHELL-SHOCKED NO MAN'S LAND THAT SPRAWLS BETWEEN CAPTAIN BEEFHEART AND THE EDGAR BROUGHTON BAND”
Stack Waddy's debut album is one of the "must hear" discs of the early 1970s, an uncompromising roar that might cavort through that shell-shocked no man's land that sprawls between Captain Beefheart and the Edgar Broughton Band, but which winds up defiantly beholden to absolutely nothing else you've ever heard -- one reason, perhaps, why the group vanished with so little trace. Recorded live in the studio (or thereabouts), Stack Waddy is a blurring blend of brutal band originals and deliciously mauled covers. Beefheart's "Sure Nuff N' Yes I Do" is an unblinking highlight, while raw takes on "Suzie Q" and "Road Runner" remind us of the group's mid-'60s genesis on the Manchester R&B scene. There's also a version of Jethro Tull's "Love Story" that comes close to topping the Sensational Alex Harvey Band in terms of lascivious power and ferocity. Certainly John Knail takes no prisoners as he howls his way through and, while Stack Waddy holds back from completely recreating the live band experience (there are no breaking bottles, for a start), still this is one of those few albums that genuinely requires you to wear protective clothing. – Allmusic Review by Dave Thompson

Crazed time signatures abound as musicians from the West look East for inspiration, infusing their rock and jazz sounds with vibes looted from India and the Far East. Released originally in 1969, Middle Eastern Rock is a unique, compelling fusion record from Armenian-American oud player John Berberian. The Rock East Ensemble, Beberian’s backing band, consists of the artist’s standard group, which specializes in traditional Armenian music with a jazz edge, and American session musicians who bring more of a rock sound. The results, which blend elements of psychedelia, free jazz, surf music, and various klezmer, African, and Middle Eastern textures, are dazzling, and are sure to thrill anyone with a taste for rare "outside" albums.
FIRST EVER LEGIT REISSUES!
- AllMusic Review by Anthony Tognazzini
The concept came from my producers at Verve at the time. I was really excited — it was a great transition. The title was a bit misleading — it was more jazz than rock — but we incorporated two or three rock musicians, including Joe Beck on guitar, who just wailed away with the oud. I think for its day it was a very progressive album and is thought of as remaining very current. I used Middle Eastern melodies, some of which I arranged myself, and we went over them with three rock musicians and four Armenian musicians. We came together one day and made an album. The entire LP was rehearsed and recorded in one day! It was very well received, but its success was short-lived because a few months after it came out the management at Verve changed hands, and they weren’t interested in pushing the material that had already come out. I think it would have been much bigger had the company stayed intact. It was licensed and came out as a CD in England … but now it’s out of print. The actual LPs sell for a pretty penny. - John Berberian (in conversation with artsfuse.org)

SARCASTIC SLACKER GARAGE ROCK WITH SELF-CONSCIOUSLY WINSOME LYRICS The Driving Stupid’s previously unreleased album plays like a garage group providing the soundtrack for a Z-grade horror-science fiction film. The CD joins the recently released LP version!
In the summer of 1966, The Driving Stupid drove. Traveling from New Jersey-by way of Albuquerque-to Hollywood. The band, with little-to-no experience, decided they were going to find fame and fortune by taking the musical world by storm! Improbably, they were able to record a handful of demos, hook up with a major label and record an entire album of outlandish music. In addition to the highly regarded single "Horror Asparagus Stories” b/w "The Reality Of (Air) Fried Borsk,” The Stupid penned songs about alien invaders, vengeful water, and tortured mailmen. Driving determination and an admitted touch of naivety led to the band's record deal. Poor singles sales and little promotion led to the album remaining unreleased for more than 35 years. LP was on time but the CD delayed? That’s Stupid!

Boy Harsher ‘The Runner (Original Soundtrack)’ OUT: 21s t January 2022
Pre Order Start: 19th October 2021
Boy Harsher’s latest release, ‘The Runner (Original Soundtrack)’, is an exorcism. Augustus Muller and Jae Matthews’ fifth release entitled ‘The Runner (Original Soundtrack)’ is not a traditional album. Rather, it is the soundtrack to a short film, also entitled ‘The Runner’. The film, written, produced, and directed by the duo, is a searching horror film, attached to a meta-style “documentary” about Boy Harsher’s recording process. The album includes several distinct components: cinematic arrangements, vocal features, and of course classic Boy Harsher dark pop. Both the album and short film will be released in January 2022.
Artist: Boy Harsher Album: The Runner (Original Soundtrack) Release Date: 21st January 2022 Label: Nude Club Genre: Electronic, Alternative, Goth, Soundtrack
Last year, in the midst of the obvious chaos (the global pandemic), but additionally with Jae’s MS diagnosis, Augustus started working on moody, cinematic sketches. It was uncertain what these pieces would become, other than catharsis. In Jae’s period of convalescence, she kept thinking about this sinister character: a woman running through the woods. Together, they developed this idea further into a film. They were unable to tour, a drastic (and isolating) shift in their career, and making ‘club music’ did not feel right. But there was so much they needed to get out. The next Boy Harsher release would be a reconciliation of this time. The album processes feelings of universal anxiety and the confrontation of at home illness. A necessary expulsion during a time of unrest.

The album opens with “Tower”. The only track on ‘The Runner (Original Soundtrack)’ that Boy Harsher has previously played live, but never recorded. The song is an incantation, with its pulsing synth and Jae’s begging vocals. A spell about desire and impending destruction. Jae asks 'But are you honest? Do you trust? You trust in me?' Questions answered by her desperate yells. It starts both the film and the soundtrack with a heavy presence.

Two songs on ‘The Runner (Original Soundtrack)’ feature vocalists other than Jae Matthews. He allows a distinct sound for both vocalists and really leans into the possibility of divergent genres. “Machina”, is a HI-NRG homage, performed by Mariana Saldaña of Boan, and “Autonomy” a new wave tribute, performed by Cooper B. Handy of Lucy. Augustus Muller fully embraces the soundtrack ethos, by creating fictional ‘bands’ to generate additional content.

‘The Runner (Original Soundtrack)’ is exactly what’s in the name: a soundtrack. At first the shape of the release was nebulous - yet once realized the album is dynamic. It serves as the story of the running figure and her musical accompaniment. Those expecting a traditional release will be surprised, but not disappointed.

JOHN ZORN-BILL LASWELL THE CLEANSING TZA CD 4037 Spectrum John Zorn, Bill Laswell. Brion Gysin * Aleister Crowley * Austin Osman Spare * William Burroughs * Alejandro Jodorowsky * The Cleansing Zorn and Laswell have been friends and musical compatriots since they first met in 1978, and have been responsible for some of the most intense and memorable music in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Recorded in early 2021, near the end of the year’s pandemic lockdown, it marks the first time Zorn had touched the saxophone in over fifteen months. Laswell had spent most of the year locked in his apartment. Something special was happening that day—and after the session Laswell felt rejuvenated—as if all the toxins and poisons had left his body. Soulful and essential, The Cleansing is an historic meeting—and the first recorded duo project by these two Downtown magicians.

This remains true with Dear God, I Hate Myself as it delivers a look at responsibility, fear, healing, and societal roles wrapped in rich gothic pop music. The sound is still distinctly Xiu Xiu, but Jamie Stewart's vocals are finally effortless paired with vibrant melodies full of subtlety and the distinct sonic accents expected of this anticipated Xiu Xiu release. The result is a record that proves that art can be pop and pop can challenge you to look inside yourself. Each new Xiu Xiu release has evolved alongside the lives of Jamie Stewart and company. On this record you'll find more intensity and introspection than ever before, but sonically and lyrically it continues to move forward with a subtly new perspective — hyper-focused yet aware of a larger, external picture unfolding. The pace of the record grips you, the music offers layers of detail, and the themes focus on not just the past or stark present but hint towards vespers of the future as well. Dear God, I Hate Myself will challenge you and force you to look inside yourself, but only after you get lost in the music. It's passionate, it's energetic, and it affects you. Dear God, I Hate Myself is a beautiful piece of humanist art. It's an important addition to the growing body of intelligent music from Xiu Xiu. And it's a brilliant gothic pop record that can stand next to anything.

• Logan Lynn’s 5th album and KRS debut • Founder of .gay
• 1st pressing on color vinyl Written at home during the pandemic lockdown over the course of March-October 2020, and recorded in early 2021, New Money is a 9 song album by Portland electropop musician, Logan Lynn, produced in collaboration with longtime co-writer Gino Mari. Back to his electropop roots after collaborations with 80s popstar Tiffany, The Dandy Warhols and Styrofoam since 2018, New Money is an invitation to dance the last few years off. The record finds Logan Lynn exploring themes of life in the face of suffering, Covid loneliness, and existential danger on “It’s Been Forever” (“This is the growing edge, This is the dark part in between...oh God, it’s been forever since we were together”) and “Is There Anyone Else Like This In The World” (“The truth is the truth and I want you to know that I want you to find somewhere safe and warm, away from home”), and navigating longterm addiction recovery on “Sit and Spin” (“Well mama told me there’d be days like this but no one warned me that the nights are even harder...Pump me full of whatever you’ve found, I’ll find a way back to love”). The album also features Lynn lampooning New Portland, calling out gentrification and Portlandia on “Fight or Flight” (“We built this town on rock and roll and we’ll burn it down when the decade’s over...Make it into something beautiful, then ruin it with a TV show.”), and wrestling with the concept of success and material emptiness on “Rich and Beautiful” (“Repping Gucci, dripping Tiffany...Oh, I wanna be rich and beautiful”), while documenting his experiences of surviving his own vices during the global pandemic on “Eat&Drink&Smoke&Shop&Fuck.” (“I’m all kinds of terrible, too...I just wanna drink and smoke and shop and fuck it up.”). Logan Lynn’s “New Money” also finds the veteran songwriter honoring his all-time musical heroes Liz Phair on “Fuck and Run” and Elliott Smith on “Baby Britain”, with new interpretations of their songs. On the album closer, “Here’s To Us”, Lynn sings about redemption and loss (“Life knocks you around and makes fools from the highest ground, it pulls you under and whirls you about.”) and while these are recurring themes throughout this new work, Lynn has centered it all in queer power, gay joy, and the belief that we will someday come back together, at shows, in crowds, and on the dancefloor.

20 years, BRAD BARR has been counting the number 216. It’s a mysterious number that seems to show up everywhere — from clocks and license plates to Ouija boards and receipts — and now it’s also sewn the fabric of his new album, like the 216 stitches on a baseball. The Barr Brothers frontman has set aside his band, his microphone and even his lyric-sheet — picking up his instrument for a solo guitar album that ripples with immediacy, vulnerability, and the spell of six-cubed. or more than
Barr spent decades developing his visceral approach to the guitar, first with The Slip and then across three LPs with the Barr Brothers. THE WINTER MISSION — the follow-up to The Fall Apartment, Barr’s 2008 solo debut — had its origins in an instrumental commission for New York City’s All For One Theater. It “felt like a gift,” Barr recalls — to have a sound he could explore all by himself, away from the road, during COVID's strange intermission. Inspired by artists like Caetano Veloso, Mississippi Fred McDowell, D'Gary and John Frusciante, Barr set out to make music that was naked and unprocessed, but also occasionally loud — alive with a sense of wakeful intimacy. The number 216 was a constant theme. The guitarist first encountered the so-called “magic square” during a teenage acid trip; in the years since then it’s become a talisman — one of the few areas where Barr feels mystical, sensing a genuine order in the universe. These songs pay tribute to that order—from 216’s lofty mathematical and astrological properties to its function as an area code (for Cleveland). Still, you don’t need to believe in 216 to fall for this record. You don’t even need to be able to count that high. It’s enough to feel the grace that shimmers underneath these tracks, a wild music’s secret scaffolding.

‘Lightbulbs’ still remains unquestionably Fujiya & Miyagi sounding, tweaking their past aesthetic whilst creating a bridge to where they would travel next. With a plush new re-master, the album sounds crisper and punchier than it did before. It’s a fascinating snapshot of a group in transition as they start to shed their formative influences and travel onward.

Artsick was formed in June 2018 when Christina Riley was feeling "artsick" and writing songs, but missing the inspiration and excitement of collaborating with her old band, Burnt Palms. Christina was soon joined by Mario Hernandez (Kids On A Crime Spree, Ciao Bella) on drums and Donna McKean (Lunchbox, Hard Left) on bass and a band was born. Following up their terrific 2018 7" single they are back with their debut album "Fingers Crossed," a thrilling, compelling and downright fun record that surveys a vast swathe of indie and indiepop history, from DIY progenitors like Dolly Mixture through the punkier side of C86 (think Talulah Gosh, Fat Tulips) to the 90s K Records-centered International Pop Underground and straight through more recent exemplars like Vivian Girls and Colleen Green. Across its 11 songs "Fingers Crossed" is packed with great songs and memorable moments, indelible melodies and heartfelt lyrics. Christina says that she was "always been drawn to fuzzy guitars, melodies with emotion and songs with urgency" and that is readily apparent on every moment of this excellent album. Oakland, CA's Kids On A Crime Spree have spent the last decade crafting a compact but potent discography that shows a deep love of 60s Brill Building songwriting, 70s powerpop, bubblegum glam/pop, the Ramones and of course the seminal sonic overload and pop pathos of Phil Spector's legendary productions. With each release head Kid Mario Hernandez -- along with drummer Becky Barron, and guitarist Bill Evans -- have put a more and more unique stamp on the music they love and gathered a rather devoted fanbase doing so.
Now back with a new record, Kids give us something their fans have always wanted ... more! Fall In Love Not In Line is a 10-song full-length record, a first for them. Cut at 45rpm, the album clocks in at a brisk 25 minutes, and it's a solid assemblage of noise-pop exuberance in all respects. Hernandez sought to move even farther from their influences, and the thick, rich sound that the band has put to tape (analog, of course) shows more warmth and some darker textures than in previous efforts; more shifting of tempos and melodies; a unity of purpose that can only come from years of playing together and listening to each other. The result is thoroughly modern power-pop that wears it's love of the classics lightly, finding new paths through familiar territory. Contact: Stephen Svacina

GCOM - E2-XO Tom Middleton is focused on the future in many ways. His new alias GCOM is an all-new, 21st century redesign of his original Global Communication concept and collaboration with Mark Pritchard. The new album E2-XO is some of the most advanced music he has ever made, both in sound and concept. signifying a technological, creative and philosophical evolution into the new era; from planetary communication and understanding to Galactic Communication. A decade in the making, inspired by themes surrounding anthropocene humankind’s impact on climate, what we’re doing about it, conscious AI, and the acceleration for interplanetary travel beyond the Moon, to Mars, and eventually intergalactic in search of potentially habitable exoplanets, the story of the hunt for Earth 2.0. As he continues to expand his sonic horizons, Tom has been concurrently exploring visionary applications of astrophysics, AI, cosmology, cube-sats and rocket science, alongside more esoteric ideas about the nature of the Universe and the human condition. Previously his interest in sleep science led Tom to expanding the instinctively beautiful ambience of classic Global Communication into something tailored to helping people with sleep problems using brainwave entrainment; scoring an iTunes top ten album with his Sleep Better project, a record that is measurably therapeutic in the truest sense, and has spawned many projects focused on supporting human problems like anxiety, stress, sleep disruption and human performance using sound design for wellness, but with no loss of brilliance in terms of musicality. E2-XO is an audio movie, a space opera, a psychic investigation of the human mind in space. It is a fully immersive experience, with all the dynamics that such an imagination-stretching voyage implies. Listeners will hear echoes of Tom’s whole creative life; from his childhood absorbing Vangelis and Tomita, through the white heat of discovery alongside Richard D James, Matthew Herbert and friends, right through to his collaborations with technological innovators today and his current research into neuroscience and sound design. E2-XO acknowledges the past, but make no mistake whatsoever: This is the future…

• “Open" Edition of 500 pressed on Cloudy Teal Vinyl • 7” includes digital download Six months on from the release of their critically-acclaimed fourth album, ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH, Philadelphia trio SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE closeout 2021 with brand new 7” THE DOOR, comprising two previously-heard but never physically released songs in “THE DOOR IS OPEN” and “THE DOOR IS CLOSING”. A special and limited release, 500 copies of the single have been pressed on cloudy teal vinyl. The 7” is led by “THE DOOR IS OPEN”, a 2020 single that marked a new chapter for the band ahead of the release of ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH. The song “continues to defy definition”, Stereogum said upon its initial release, before adding: “It’s amazing that they made such a short track feel like such a dreamy journey.” It’s backed by “THE DOOR IS CLOSING”, a bright and skewed gem of a track that was originally released earlier this year via Through The Soil, a charity compilation that benefited the NAMI COVID-19 Mental Health Support Fund. Whether opened or closed, THE DOOR is a bold reminder of SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE’S many layered and colourful ideas. It also ribbon-ties a brilliant 2021 for the band, one which saw ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH labelled as “an intensely beautiful, intensely difficult record” by Pitchfork, a “sprawling odyssey of haunting dissonance and blissful euphoria” by Flood Magazine, and a "storm of sound with a deep humanity coming through” by Fader. SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE is Zack Schwartz, Rivka Ravede and Corey Wichlin.

RIYL: Hovvdy, Claud, Clairo, Tomberlin, Girlpool, Soccer Mommy, Ben Gibbard The 16th installment of Saddle Creek’s Document series comes from allie—the mononymous creative moniker of Nashville-based singer/songwriter Allie Cuva (she/they). After spending time in various musical projects around Nashville, Cuva was recruited as the touring/session drummer for Cavetown—an experience that would prove pivotal. She returned from a lengthy run of shows feeling inspired, restless, and more certain than ever that she had something to express. "I got home and felt very removed and strange, and music was a way to start trying to make sense of it," Cuva explains. That desire fueled the writing of allie’s debut EP, 2020’s Junior Coder's Experiment, and its release began to reveal a path not just to catharsis, but also to self-discovery. “Putting the EP out under the allie moniker ended up really illuminating some of the more subconscious feelings I was having about myself and my gender identity,” Cuva says. “I realized I’d always been trying to get a fuller sense of the picture, but the art really helped me touch on things that I was about to confront in a much more direct way. I started doing research, and seriously considering changing my pronouns, identifying as transgender and nonbinary, and undergoing hormone replacement therapy.” Cuva describes this decision as a choice to begin a lifelong journey, but it would start with the closing of a different chapter. “My longtime partner and I were no longer compatible,” Cuva says. “We didn’t want to separate—it wasn’t a matter of lack of love—but we realized that was the right thing for us as individuals.” The end of the relationship led Cuva to throw herself into writing, resulting in her debut album Maybe Next Time, which was released in August of 2021.

While Maybe Next Time might be considered a breakup album, on cast iron // infinite jesters allie explores other complex corners of relationships and human connection. On a-side “cast iron” allie explores her interpretations of the philosophical language and sentiments of certain people in her life. The repeated phrase “I know what you really mean” is not intended to be patronizing, but rather is meant to illuminate the fact that we as humans are often confused/misled about why we think, speak, believe, and act the way we do. As Cuva describes it, “Oftentimes, there are clearer, more sober ways to represent ourselves, and I’m interested in that journey.” B-side “infinite jesters” is a consideration of the impact of a new, quickly-developing intimate relationship. “Though my favorite relationships have been fortified over many years,” Cuva explains, “I further realized in writing this song that some relationships can be particularly impactful from their near inception. In other words, a lot of good can happen quickly if we’re open to it.” The cast iron // infinite jesters Document 7” is out January 14, 2022.
Taking inspiration from the original concept behind the founding of Saddle Creek, as an attempt to highlight our home city through music and art, we began the Document Series in 2017. Each release featured in the Document Series is comprised of an exclusive record featuring unreleased music from artists outside of the label's roster, along with a specially curated zine created by the artist.

STH2454 - U.S. Velvet – “U.S Velvet” - 12” Single

ELKKA HARMONIC FREQUENCIES Release Date: January 21st, 2022 London based producer and DJ Elkka (real name Emma Kirby) returns to Technicolour records with a new EP titled “Harmonic Frequencies”, a fitting follow up to the critically acclaimed “Euphoric Melodies” released in 2021. Written at a time of uncertainty during the last few months of 2020 “Harmonic Frequencies” sees Emma process the emotions she was feeling at the time. From the dance-floor ready opener ‘Harmonic Frequencies’, in which we hear Emma energetic and expressive, continuing the vibe of previous EP “Euphoric Melodies”, through to the ambient and cathartic moments on ‘Music to Heal To’ and ‘Voices’ (in which we hear snippets of Julianna Barwick's meditative vocals sampled) where her intentions are to nurture, soothe and rebuild. The EP is an ode to the healing nature of dance music in all its different forms. Released in 2021 “Euphoric Melodies'' received impressive support from the likes of The Guardian, Crack, Billboard, NME, DJ Mag, Mixmag and Resident Advisor who said "Intimate, uplifting and personal, Euphoric Melodies is a collection of house songs bearing all the hallmarks of a crossover success". Strong radio support came from Nick Grimshaw, Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Danny Howard, Jamz Supernova and Mary Anne Hobbs to name a few. Deciding to take full artistic control over her music Emma made the shift from singer / songwriter to producer and artist in 2016. Over the years Emma has gained support from well known peers such as Four Tet, Floating Points, Caribou, George Fitzgerald, SHERELLE, Annie Mac and more. Recent tour dates have included stand-out sets at We Out Here, Field Day and Lost Village to name a few, with upcoming dates at Warehouse Project and Printworks.

The New Day- the debutalbum from Flying Norwegians is first truly remarkable country rock album from Norway.,it’s the first album to be convincingly good in a genre that we believed, until 1974, to solely be the domain of American artists with mud on their boots and whiskey on their person. The band, which was given the self-evident name Flying Norwegians, can be traced back to the end of the 1960s. Rune Walle met Nina Johansen at a People’s College outside of Bergen and together they formed Oriental Sunshine. They released one LP in 1970, considered a classic, in which they fuse oriental soundscapes with folk music traditions. Two years later, Walle found himself in another pioneering band: Hole in the Wall. This band mixed the sounds of both American rock and country with Norwegian folk music tonality, creating an album considered to be one of the very best to ever have been made in Norway. Three of the main members of Hole in the Wall went on to become the backbone of the second iteration of the rock band Saft—releasing an LP that would earn them a Spellemann award. But Walle’s involvement with Saft proved to be a temporary one, as he would finally embark on a longstanding dream of his own: a pure country rock band. He brought with him Gunnar Bergstrøm from Saft, while adding three experienced young men from the music scene in Bergen, Western Norway: Cato Sanden, Jarle Zimmerman and Johannes Torkelsen. The songs found on the band’s first album were composed and rehearsed on an abandoned farm in Denmark. This setting would result in an album steaming with pure-tothe-roots American country, coupled with all the Scandinavian fervour that five virile men, armed with instruments, could muster. It sounded American, but it was evident from the cover art that it was, in fact, Norwegian. The artist, Arve Håland, most likely had Roald Amundsen in mind when he drew an airship hanging over rolling clouds, coupled with the modest title “New Day”. But this was anything but modest. This was convincing. “New Day” proved that authentic country rock could be made in Norway . Tracklist:

Wounded Bird by Flying Norwegians is best Norwegian country rock album to ever have been made. An album that is so convincingly good, in every conceivable way, that it was almost released by A&M Records. But it’s also an album that serves as a classic example in which everything that can go wrong, does go wrong. And at the worst possible time. “Almost” will serve as the keyword here. First the good news: Flying Norwegians released their first LP in the autumn of 1974 and was quickly hailed as an extraordinary Norwegian band. The album was proof that a Norwegian band could, in fact, compete with American artists in the same genre, country rock in this case. Therefore, the expectations surrounding the follow up album were huge. But these expectations were resoundingly met. The ten songs recorded for “Wounded Bird” showed a maturity in musical expression, as well as the lyrics—many of these written by the painter, Per Helge Hansen. And once again, the album featured some provocative cover artwork: a dead bird on a dinnerplate. The album was released in early 1976. The rest of the year should have been one long victory parade for Flying Norwegians, culminating in a release of the album overseas in the United States. Instead, the band and its fans were witness to a series of “almost” events. Almost a breakthrough, almost record-breaking sales, almost released in the USA and almost nominated for a Spellemann. That last one was a mistake— no one remembered to send the record in for an evaluation, so the best Norwegian rock album of 1976 was not even considered for the award. It’s a sad ending, but in some ways, it turned out good for one member of the band: Rune Walle. A&M Records was distributed in Norway by Arne Bendiksen AS (LTD) and was the reason the company received “Wounded Bird” for evaluation. A&M had a band called Ozark Mountain Daredevils on their roster, who visited Norway during a tour of Europe in 1976. Flying Norwegians played support at one of the gigs and the American cowboys noticed the young Norwegian, Walle, playing guitar as proficiently as Lowell George in Little Feat. Faith would have it that the Ozark gang was looking for a new guitarist for their band. In a small community-centre north of Bergen, the shaggy ensemble from the USA listened to Flying Norwegians play and subsequently decided to invite Rune Walle to join their band. He was given three days to pack his bags and travel across the Atlantic to live out his boyhood dream of playing in a professional band, with a huge record company backing them up. He couldn’t say no. The rest of his bandmembers in Flying Norwegians continued without him, but that’s a story we’ll return to during the next re-release. (words:Bård Ose, fan and friend ).

Erratics & Unconformities is the first album by Craven Faults. It follows three EPs: Netherfield Works, Springhead Works and Nunroyd Works. Long-form analogue electronic journeys across decades and continents, and swathes of post-industrial northern Britain. The journey on Erratics & Unconformities picks up where Netherfield Works left off. We take the canal towpath out of the city. We fork north shortly afterwards. Is this where it started? The terrain gradually becomes more rugged. Familiar. Wild. Evidence of human activity is less immediate in this glacial landscape. It’s there if you seek it. But easy to ignore. If you listen carefully, you can still hear the weight of the ice-sheet carving its way through the rock. Everything in its own time. The output from the old textile mill Craven Faults calls home is no longer as linear as it once was. There was no clear start point for the project, rather simply rediscovering the joy in experimentation with no material goals. Some of the recordings that make up Erratics & Unconformities go back almost seven years. Tracks have come and gone in that time. They don’t leave until they’ve undertaken a stringent quality control process. It started slowly, but has picked up momentum in the last eighteen months. Recorded and re-recorded to the correct level of imperfection, and then left to breathe. Mixed and re-mixed. Carefully compiled when the time was right. The journey is just as important as the destination. cravenfaults.com facebook.com/cravenfaults twitter.com/cravenfaults instagram.com/cravenfaults The Leaf Label theleaflabel.com contact@theleaflabel.com

Warning! Listening to If Nothing Is demands your full and undivided attention! This is not elevator music. Trying to perform menial tasks while listening to this album will turn your brain into scrambled eggs. Melding sharp technical skills, creative and splendid songwriting, a keen eye for detail and a streak of madness, the debut album from If Nothing Is is a whirlwind of everything within extreme and technical metal music, from thrash, speed, death to black metal. Intersected with progressive, experimental passages and rich jazzy parts, that can remind you of the early efforts of bands like Atheist and Cynic, each song is in itself a journey. Originally released in 2015 only on digital platforms, the debut album of If Nothing Is has gotten a full make over to give it the presentation the material deserves. With new original artwork, the album has been re-mixed and remastered to finally be released in physical forms. If Nothing Is is the brainchild of Dødheimsgard bassist Lars Emil Måløy and started out in Trondheim in 2008 from the ashes of the band Revocation. After working relentlessly on the debut album, they got help from Vicotnik from Dødheimsgard to help out with synths, beats and samples. This almost forgotten masterpiece is finally available in all formats again, and if you love your music extreme, complicated and experimental, you will love If Nothing Is. Known as an extremely diverse band, stretching their sound in all directions, the Bergen-based rock band Dobbeltgjenger returns with an superbly focused record. “Smooth Failing” is filled to the rim with groove and funky rhythms, and the songs are catchy as hell from start to finish. (Un)fresh out of an infernal rock disco at a beat up bar in nowhere Norway, while both down and high on life, Dobbeltgjenger appears out of a colorful mist of neon tainted snow, in a vintage pink escape car. Their third album «Smooth Failing» is an explosive, dark and neon saturated party album, where naive, riff based “the Strokes-esque” themes are met with vigorous grooves and cheeky falsettos. The album is about the gritty “BOOM!”s, manic “FUN!”s, gut wrenching “OH FUCK!”s and terrifying “I LOVE Y…”s of life. Dobbeltgjenger is here to bring back the groove and fun in rock music! LIMITED EDITION RED VINYL Josh Rouse never planned on making a holiday record. “I was never a holiday record kind of guy,” he laughs. “Growing up, I remember hearing Vince Guaraldi and Bing Crosby and all the staples everybody listens to each winter, but I never collected Christmas music or anything like that.” It makes sense, then, that ‘The Holiday Sounds of Josh Rouse’ isn’t your typical yuletide collection. Written off-and-on over the course of the last ten years, the record is joyful and festive of course, but, much like the holiday season itself, it’s also laced with an undercurrent of longing and melancholy. For every playful portrait of giddy lovers on New Year’s Eve, there’s a stranded traveler spending Christmas alone; for every slick St. Nick in a suit and sunglasses there’s a lonely ex-pat waiting by the mailbox for cards that never seem to come. The arrangements are eclectic and intoxicating, drawing equal influence from Rouse’s Midwestern childhood and his decade-and-a-half spent living in Spain, and the performances here are sparkling and fizzy to match, blending jazz sophistication with rootsy sincerity and sly crooner charm. The result is a holiday record built for the long haul, a wholesome, whip smart collection that’s guaranteed to stay with you well after the snow has melted and all the decorations have come down. “I decided that if I was going to make a holiday record, I didn’t want to load it up with sleigh bells and choirs and sing the same old standards that everybody else has already sung,” says Rouse. “I wanted to write something that folks hadn’t heard before, something they could listen to year-round.”

“It was Nick (Lowe) that opened my eyes to how great holiday records could actually be,” says Rouse. “He showed me that you don’t have to be sappy or sentimental with it, that you can be yourself and put your own stamp on the tradition.” Rouse had already begun experimenting with his own holiday songs, writing a Christmas-themed tune or two every December just for the fun of it, but he’d never really considered recording or releasing them. Sometimes he’d perform the tracks live around the holidays; sometimes he’d sing them to get a laugh from his kids; sometimes he’d save them as voice memos on his phone and forget that they even existed. By the fall of 2018, though, Rouse realized he’d written more than enough material for a record, and, inspired by Lowe, he headed into Nashville’s Alex The Great studio for a four-day whirlwind of a session produced by longtime friend and collaborator Joe Pisapia (Guster, Ben Folds Five). “We recorded everything, even my vocals, live in just a couple takes,” says Rouse, who cut the album with the same group of musicians that backed him on ‘1972.’ “I’d give the guys some hints and direction here and there, but we work so well together that very little needed to be said. I was smiling after every performance.” “I approached writing these songs like I was soundtracking a film,” Rouse explains. “I was trying to bring all these little holiday scenes around the world to life with humor and heart.”
Distributed exclusively by Redeye 505 Eno St, Hillsborough NC, 27278
In that sense, the album fits seamlessly into Rouse’s catalog, just the latest chapter in an extraordinary career built on transportive, empathetic storytelling and rich, cinematic production. “This season brings the best of me,” he sings on “Easy Man.” ‘The Holiday Sounds of Josh Rouse’ is proof of that.

‘Antidawn’ reduces Burial’s music to just the vapours. The record explores an interzone between dislocated, patchwork songwriting and eerie, open-world game-space ambience. In the resulting no man’s land, lyrics take precedence over song, lonely phrases colour the haze, a stark and fragmented structure makes time slow down. ‘Antidawn’ seems to tell a story of a wintertime city, and something beckoning you to follow it into the night. The result is both comforting and disturbing, producing a quiet and uncanny glow against the cold. Sometimes, as it enters 'a bad place', it takes your breath away. And time just stops.

PINEGROVE 11:11
January 28, 2022 PRESS
“Pinegrove...revolves around Hall’s ability to break your heart and put it back together again in the span of a single song.” -Consequence Of Sound “One of the most talented recording and touring bands in the land.” -Under The Radar
SELLING POINTS •Extensive US touring and Press/TV features in 2022 •Radio campaign for single “Cyclone” •Limited deluxe opaque red vinyl
Pinegrove’s new album 11:11 is an unqualified triumph, an album that seizes listeners with hook-filled songs imbuing feelings of warmth, urgency, and poetic beauty, even as it asks some of life’s big and difficult questions. On previous Pinegrove recordings, band member Sam Skinner usually oversees mixing duties, but this time out, noted producer and former Death Cab for Cutie member Chris Walla has assumed the role. Calling previous album Marigold’s production “crisp and contained,” Hall, who co-produced 11:11 with Sam, sought more of a “messier” feel for these new songs. Most of the recording took place at two Hudson Valley facilities (Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock and The Building in Marlboro) with the final touches done side by side with Walla in Seattle. 11:11 features lush soundscapes, organs, Megan Benavente’s melodic and adventurous bass playing, Josh Marre’s signature guitar work & a special guest-Doug Hall, Evan’s father-playing piano on many tracks. The record sounds intimate, yet expansive. “It spends equal time on optimism, community, reaffirming what we are and how it’s our duty to look out for one another” says singer Evan Stephens Hall. “There’s anger, love, hope and grief. The record has all of that.” The opening mini epic track, “Habitat,” is a two-part masterpiece of texturalism, brimming with robust, percussive guitars and driven by unsettling shifts. Another key track is “Alaska,” – a happy-go-lucky romp of dense, bracing guitar rock, lurching out of the gate with tectonic force and boasting hooks at every turn. Later, the breezy, pastoral folk-tinged “Iodine” glistens with exquisite vocal harmonies, and “Flora” is a beautifully appointed apology to nature, its luxurious country rock feels connected to past masters like the Flying Burrito Brothers or early Wilco.

For 20 years the Tuareg culture and music has fascinated the world. Their quasi-sacred poetic songs inspire western songwriters like KURT VILE or JOSÉ GONZALEZ, while the virtuosity of their guitar playing fascinates guitar heroes like JIMMY PAGE, and finally the spirituality and meditative hypnotism impresses electronic music producers like FOUR TET.With two albums, IMARHAN has become an emblem of the new Tuareg generation, breathing new life into “Assouf”, the desert blues. While most of current Tuareg productions are exiled to the United States, the group, led by Sadam, is part of their culture and their city, the capital of the Tuareg people, with an open door to the desert. By building their own studio in Tamanrasset Aboogi, Imarhan become the spokesmen of the young Tuareg lost generation (forgotten by Algerian, Nigerian and Malian governments). With their new album Aboogi, Imarhan manipulate the rights and ancestry of the Tuareg. By inviting the legendary Mohamed At Itlale aka Japonais (who has since, sadly, passed away) and the genius musician Abdallah Ag Alhousseyni, IMARHAN follows the heritage of TINARIWEN, the godfathers of Assouf. When they recorded with GRUFF RHYS of the SUPER FURRY ANIMALS, their brilliant and universal songwriting takes on every sense of the word. Finally, by inviting the Sudanese singer Sulafa Elyas, we understand that IMARHAN is open to all of Africa, defenders of the Tuaregs but above all spokesperson for the new African generation. Selling Points: • Third album of the Algerian band on City Slang • Limited Indie Retail Edition • Download code • Featuring guest vocals by Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals) • The first record since 'Temet' in 2018 • Imarhan have a high listenership on Spotify (93k+) Timeline: Social Media: The album campaign and it’s singles will be accompanied by a coordinated worldwide advertising campaign on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook & Google Ads.

NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, JAPAN, OR AUSTRALIA; THROW THIS PARTY EVERYWHERE ELSE!
The Blind Date Party hosted by Bill Callahan and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and featuring AZITA, Matt Sweeney, Alasdair Roberts, Matt Kinsey, Sean O’Hagan, Bill MacKay, George Xylouris, Dead Rider, David Pajo, Mick Turner, Meg Baird, Ty Segall, Emmett Kelly, Cory Hanson, Six Organs of Admittance, David Grubbs, Cassie Berman, Cooper Crain and Sir Richard Bishop happened online in the fall and winter of ’20–’21 — but the party planning dated back to the spring of 2020. Stuck at home, with no gigs in the foreseeable future, Bill, Bonnie and Drag City needed an outreach program to keep themselves busy, not to mention sane. In the absence of any company or anything on the calendar, playing songs they loved was an idea; playing with people they loved, the desire. And making it fun — so pairing someone with someone else having no say in the matter, the essence of the blind date, was the plan. Favorite songs were chosen; players from around the Drag City galaxy were messaged. Pretty soon, songs were flying back and forth — music in the air! And thus, they were entertained throughout the summer of 2020, when so much else in the world seemed so completely wrong. By the fall, the songs started to appear online: Bill and Bonnie singing a song by someone they loved and admired; each song cut by another artist they loved and admired, then sent to Bill and Bonny to provide the finishing touches. The spotlight pointed in every direction each week: toward the singers and writers who’d originally played the songs (Yusuf Islam, Hank Williams Jr., Dave Rich, The Other Years, Billie Eilish, Steely Dan, Lou Reed, Bill Callahan, Jerry Jeff Walker, Robert Wyatt, Judy Mayhan, Johnnie Frierson, Demis Roussos, Will Oldham, Leonard Cohen, David Berman, Iggy Pop and John Prine), the featured collaborators, the artists whose work adorned each digital single and videos made by still more collaborators. Now it was a party! Like the best parties, it turned out to be everything and more than they’d even hoped for. So many more people were involved in the process that we can get on the page here. Suffice to say, making records over the years has required a broad sense of community and an always-surprising mix of independence and unity, inspiration and utility. Some of our best memories are those where as many of our folks as as possible were together in one place at one time. In those moments, it was just a great thing just to be there. And with others looking in . . . this was a joy one could only be infinitely lucky to feel — and to take for granted, as well. The Blind Date Party was one of these, maybe the most improbable one yet. It’s for everyone who’s here and it’s in the name of everyone who’s gone but will never go and will always live with us. This album will too. And thus, we are entertained.

BITCHIN BAJAS
SWITCHED ON RA Tracks: Space is the Place A Call for All Demons Outer Spaceways Incorporated Moon Dance Lanquidity Opus in Springtime Island in the Sun We Travel the Spaceways
DC851C Cassette
Street: January 28, 2022
It’s almost four years since their last opus — two years since the most-recent run of live shows! Now, Bitchin Bajas return from whatever kind of rare ether they occupy when they’re at home, bearing the riches of the whole cosmos in their hands. And strictly OG as well — on cassette only! Switched On Ra is the outcome of a typical Bajas exercise: pouring some out for the pioneers that came before (as they’ve done with Bitchitronics and their participation in the annual Chicago performance of “In C” over the years). It’s a nice way to get a flow — they play a little of themselves, then some for the pioneers, then a little more for the band. Before long, they’re playing with the inspirations twined, as they can only come from within. For Switched On Ra, this meant a deep delve into the song-book of one of their soul-predecessors, Sun Ra, whose music is literally written in the Bajas DNA. Digging into this music sounded wild on paper: the drone synth group taking on the Arkestra harmonies and Ra’s loose grooves? The trick was to get that sense of rhythm to translate across the spectrum from Ra to Bajas, in a way that worked for them both. Their rearrangements of the tunes went good — up and down the EQ band, they were finding the round sounds and jagged edges that brought Ra’s music into their own thing. Then at the last minute, there was another twist — why not pay tribute to the Queen herself, and think of the arrangements with a Wendy Carlos vibe? A little side homage? After all, Switched on Bach was visionary, bringing analog synths from the outside all the way into the mainstream in the late 60s — and this take on Ra is meant to take him to new ears everywhere. Sun Ra of course was his own kind of original keyboard visionary, using electric keyboards in the late 40s and 50s to fill a role in jazz that had traditionally been played on acoustic piano only. Once he’d done so, he took his writing in directions inspired by the electricity, places no one had thought to go before then. Doing what he did on the keys was a stand for individuality that became the background radiation of his journey through the cosmos; the search for a place beyond earthly dominance, for all the people who desperately wanted the fuck OUT. Bitchin Bajas have been content to dominate in a microtonal world, usually without a single chord to be found anywhere. But here, they step up righteously, their vibe triangulated as they bring Ra’s music forward with some Wendy C style, making an unexpected space for all to thrive. There’s a real feeling of joy as these collected signals bounce off the tape and through the speakers into your space. To get this unique colloid exactly right, Bitchin Bajas used nineteen different keyboards. They abstained from deploying their arsenal of reed and woodwind instruments: everything had to be on the keys. This meant Yamahas, Rolands, Korgs, Casios, a MicroMoog and of course their trusty Ace Tone organ. They even broke out the Crumar DS-2, to have some of Ra’s chosen tone in the mix. Then Jayve Montgomery added an EWI as a solo voice on a few tunes, just to get some airblown signal (and a natural shout out to EWI master Marshall Allen) in there, after all. It felt like somewhere in the universe, Ra was decreeing it. Switched On Ra is an effervescent celebration of music throughout time and space. Take a ride!

THE BETHS JUMP ROPE GAZERS Everything changed for The Beths when they released their debut album, Future Me Hates Me, in 2018. The indie rock band had long been nurtured within Auckland, New Zealand’s tight-knit music scene, working full-time during the day and playing music with friends after hours. Full of uptempo pop rock songs with bright, indelible hooks, the LP garnered them critical acclaim from outlets like Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, and they set out for their first string of shows overseas. They quit their jobs, said goodbye to their hometown, and devoted themselves entirely to performing across North America and Europe. They found themselves playing to crowds of devoted fans and opening for acts like Pixies and Death Cab for Cutie. Almost instantly, The Beths turned from a passion project into a full-time career in music. Songwriter and lead vocalist Elizabeth Stokes worked on what would become The Beths’ second LP, Jump Rope Gazers, in between these intense periods of touring. Like the group’s earlier music, the album tackles themes of anxiety and self-doubt with effervescent power pop choruses and rousing backup vocals, zeroing in on the communality and catharsis that can come from sharing stressful situations with some of your best friends. Stokes’s writing on Jump Rope Gazers grapples with the uneasy proposition of leaving everything and everyone you know behind on another continent, chasing your dreams while struggling to stay close with loved ones back home. “If you’re at a certain age, all your friends scatter to the four winds,” Stokes says. “We did the same thing. When you’re home, you miss everybody, and when you’re away, you miss everybody. We were just missing people all the time.” With songs like the rambunctious “Dying To Believe” and the tender, shoegazey “Out of Sight,” The Beths reckon with the distance that life necessarily drives between people over time. People who love each other inevitably fail each other. “I’m sorry for the way that I can’t hold conversations/They’re such a fragile thing to try to support the weight of,” Stokes sings on “Dying to Believe.” The best way to repair that failure, in The Beths’ view, is with abundant and unconditional love, no matter how far it has to travel. On “Out of Sight,” she pledges devotion to a dearly missed friend: “If your world collapses/I’ll be down in the rubble/I’d build you another,” she sings. “It was a rough year in general, and I found myself saying the words, ‘wish you were here, wish I was there,’ over and over again,” she says of the time period in which the album was written. Touring far from home, The Beths committed themselves to taking care of each other as they were trying at the same time to take care of friends living thousands of miles away. They encouraged each other to communicate whenever things got hard, and to pay forward acts of kindness whenever they could. That care and attention shines through on Jump Rope Gazers, where the quartet sounds more locked in than ever. Their most emotive and heartfelt work to date, Jump Rope Gazers stares down all the hard parts of living in communion with other people, even at a distance, while celebrating the ferocious joy that makes it all worth it — a sentiment we need now more than ever.

SPEEDY ORTIZ
THE DEATH OF SPEEDY ORTIZ & COP KICKER ...FOREVER It’s been ten years since Sadie Dupuis recorded the first Speedy Ortiz songs, a solo experiment that quickly became her full-time band. Since then, Speedy has produced an expansive and critically revered discography, toured worldwide, and inspired next generations of bands with inventive songwriting and advocacy to better the music industry. But in 2011, the younger Dupuis was struggling through concurrent traumas: heartbreak from first love, leaving her hometown of New York for Massachusetts, and the grief of losing several young friends. Speedy’s first songs glowed within the contrast of noisiness and intimacy, raw sonic elements that came with closely processing vulnerabilities and Dupuis’ insistence on performing and recording each instrument alone. As the new project fielded show offers from favorite show spaces like Death By Audio and Shea Stadium, these early tracks became the springboard for the playfully melodic and cleverly distorted style for which Speedy Ortiz as a full band is celebrated. Now, ten years later, Speedy’s first self-released collections will be widely available for the first time and reissued as a double LP The Death of Speedy Ortiz & Cop Kicker…Forever, alongside previously unreleased tracks, reflective liner notes penned by Dupuis, and unearthed photos and journal scans from that era.
SPEEDY ORTIZ THE DEATH OF SPEEDY ORTIZ & COP KICKER ...FOREVER
The tracks on The Death of Speedy Ortiz & Cop Kicker…Forever were written after student-created prompts while Dupuis was teaching a songwriting class at the same summer camp where she’d first learned guitar. “Hexxy Sadie” was written in an hour, like the rest of the songs, and on Dupuis’ twenty-third birthday; using explosive riffs and distorted harmonies, she explores her uncertain yearning as a twinless twin. “Frankenweenie” came from the prompt “dog,” and over brooding piano, spry tambourine, and eruptive snare, Dupuis sings from the perspective of a dead childhood pet about forgiveness. “Cutco,” which navigates tricky chord changes with deft guitar passages and ironic deadpan, grins at the bitterness of friendships gone awry. These early songs highlighted Dupuis’ remarkable talent at dissecting specific emotions and moments, analyzing the many ways the pieces fit together, and scrutinizing the places where they don’t.
TRACKLISTING
As Dupuis’ cult-beloved early material finally re-enters the world in a substantive way, The Death of Speedy Ortiz & Cop Kicker…Forever is a seamless fit to the Speedy Ortiz discography that succeeded it, and evidence that Speedy’s biting lyrics, intricate compositions, and daring performances have been inherent to the project since its outset.

YOUNG FATHERS DEAD Now Available 'DEAD', the winner of the UK's 2014 Mercury Prize, is the debut album from Young Fathers. Against a backdrop of creative resurgence in 'indie' rap, Young Fathers make the sort of uncompromisingly leftfield, forward thinking hip-hop that has nothing to do with artiness and everything to do with brilliance, all with grain silo production and genuine pop hooks. Early adopters have included Johnny Marr, Diplo, Ghostpoet, and Alt J. The group formed after meeting at an under-16s hip hop night at the infamous Bongo Club in Edinburgh when they were all in their teens. Almost immediately they started writing and recording together, initially on an old karaoke machine plugged into a cheap cassette recorder. They are committed, on course, irrefutably aligned with the stars, set to sail the globe like a ghost ship, bringing dread and joy to safe harbors and dangerous docks. Traveling with sails tattered and billowing from a mistral, channeled from the west coast of Africa to the east and the north of Britain, unfettered and multinational. Without passports. 'DEAD' has been reviewed by the likes of The Guardian (4/5), Anthony Fantano (The Needle Drop on YouTube), Clash (9/10), Exclaim! (9/10), The Line of Best Fit (8/10), NME, and more. Following support from the BBC's Zane Lowe and Lauren Laverne, the band appeared on influential talk show Jimmy Kimmel in 2014.

When the world shut down in March 2020, Charlotte Cornfield was in the middle of an artist residency in the Rocky Mountains, hunkered down in a hut with a baby grand piano, sketching ideas for a followup album to her Polaris-Longlisted 2019 LP The Shape of Your Name. In a matter of hours, she found herself back home in Toronto with months of touring cancelled and a wide swath of time ahead of her. he She began to write feverishly, mining her memories and dreams and recounting them with vivid detail. When the songs were finished, she headed to Montreal to record with producer and engineer Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Leonard Cohen), drummer Liam OʼNeill (Suuns), bassist Alexandra Levy (Ada Lea), and guitarist Sam Gleason (Tim Baker). The group tracked the album in 5 days, mostly live off the floor, seeking to capture the raw emotion of the songs. em The result is Highs in the Minuses, a memoir in fragments. Here Cornfield fully embraces the role of narrator, moving from one vignette to another in a colourful collage. We see her at 21, heartbroken and lost, carrying a friendʼs 3-legged cat back to her apartment in a box; then as a teenager, playing a new song for a group of friends on a trampoline. She sings of a magical first date, an ex with a mean streak, two skateboarders gliding in a lakeside parking lot. The brutal honesty in her lyrics brings to mind writers like David Berman and Adrianne Lenker, while musically she conjures a Zuma-era Neil Young, leaping from crunchy guitar rock to piano ballads with effortless grace. Highs in the Minuses is Charlotte Cornfieldʼs strongest offering to date, each song a gem in and of itself.

The North Water (Original Score) Release Date: 28th January 2022 - Tim Hecker's incredible score to "The North Water", starring Colin Farrell and Jack O'Connell. - The score is pressed on 180g black vinyl, housed in a deluxe spined sleeve with double sided printed insert and download card included. - The CD is presented as a digipack. - Both have formats have beautiful artwork throughout using stunning imagery from the film. - “The score for The North Water was written just before and during the pandemic in 2020, mostly over arguably one of the darkest winters of some memory in Montreal,” says Hecker. - “The music was an attempt to add depth and texture to a five-hour doomed arctic journey that charts a trajectory from hardened optimism into abject futility. We worked with a primary palette of synthesizers, electronics, and treated cello, in rich live spaces as well as suffocating dead ones. This version of the score is an enhanced mix of some of the material that made its way into the project.” - Adapted from a novel of the same name – The North Water by Ian McGuire – it tells the story of a disgraced doctor who becomes a medic onboard an Arctic whaling ship. TV – Show aired on BBC (UK) and AMC (Americas) Press – Features in Pitchfork, The Quietus, Vinyl Factory, Brooklyn Vegan, Variety, The Guardian. Only this time, it's in the guise of her very own project Laura Lee and the Jettes. Coming from the french word for "to throw away", the Jettes assemble an array of outcasts, misfits, bandits but most of all a band and a brother/sisterhood backing Laura Lee. Releasing an EP and some singles under the previous incarnation Jettes, the band went on to quickly fill festival slots, airplay and made news stories across the music press in Germany. Notable performances in 2020 at Reeperbahn Festival and WDR Rockpalast confirmed the band as one of the new music projects to watch out for among a wave of outstanding new talent coming from Germany at this time. 4 Hands, an intimate and surreal musical conversation on the piano from German sound pioneer Hans-Joachim Roedelius and American composer Tim Story, is an example of all the warm yet otherworldly beauty that can come from approaching a shared love for a singular instrument from overlapping directions. Recorded sequentially but on one and the same grand piano, Roedelius laid down a few impromptu piano études in May 2019 whilst visiting his transatlantic friend Story. Tim then learned all their intricate phrasings to add his own parts in the following months. "Together we shaped the basic compositions, sometimes carefully preparing the piano with various materials (including my own hands), and Achim’s performances were committed to tape. I continued to compose and refine my parts in the following months. Because it was all recorded on the same piano, the result has a very appealing consistency of sound, and hopefully blurs our individual contributions into a single integrated voice,” Story explains. 4 Hands encapsulates rippling minimalistic patterns and delicate, ghostly interactions with surprising harmonic twists. Roedelius’ intuitive and instinctive approach based in improvisation, paired hand in hand with Story’s deliberate distilling of ideas over time, creates two sides of an engaging and thoughtprovoking conversation that seems to evolve and deepen with each successive listen. "4 Hands is not just a new album — the logical continuation of the long-standing friendship between two composers. It’s our tribute to awareness and listening, coaxing a new sound language from the endless possibilities of a single piano played by our four hands. For me, these pieces express a different kind of beauty, they evoke more than the sum of their parts, they are a wordless dialogue, a bridge across the great water that separates our cultures from one another. Allons enfants des deux patrie, haha!” adds Roedelius.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — In Winston-Salem, N.C., guitarist Sam Moss is a legend. A superior, highly versatile musician whose advocacy for the blues and mastery of the nuances of electric blues-based soloing somewhat paralleled Mike Bloomfield’s in Chicago, Moss was an inspiring, charismatic mentor to generations of North Carolina rockers, including Let’s Active and The dB’s. He was a larger-than-life character whose club appearances astounded local audiences, yet he never released a record in his lifetime. So, producer Chris Stamey was thrilled to discover, in 2020, on the end of an old tape, forgotten masters of Blues Approved, a spectacular Stax- and Muscle Shoalsinfluenced solo record, made with Mitch Easter in 1977. This “great lost” record reveals that Moss was also a soulful songwriter and singer. It has now been carefully remixed and produced for release, with a deluxe booklet featuring detailed liner notes and bio, session notes by Easter, and lots of vivid color photos. Peter Holsapple (The dB’s) says, “Sam Moss was an inspiration to so many of us; with the release of Blues Approved, people everywhere will understand why.” Blues Approved will be released on CD and digitally by Schoolkids Records on January 28, 2022, with a vinyl edition to follow in the summer. Moss had made the first of several trips to nearby Chapel Hill to record his own original compositions in early 1977, with old friend Easter on drums (and recording). Mitch recalls: “In my house I had a ‘studio,’ meaning a Teac 2340 four-track recorder, three or four humble microphones, and for monitoring, the home stereo system. For extra-fancy sessions, I’d rent a Tapco six-channel mixer … Sam came down with two or three guitars, his Fender Twin. I played drums and Sam played everything else. And it was a really good session! Sam wrote interesting songs that almost always had a blues angle, but he brought in a lot of elements from elsewhere. He was pleased with the results, so we met a couple more times that year and recorded an LP’s worth of songs.” But the material then sat on the shelf, unreleased, as Moss opened a vintage guitar store, selling internationally to rock stars and other celebrities for several decades. Stamey felt that most of the material seemed fully formed on its own, despite the limited recording options then available, but for a few tracks — the openers “Rooster Blood” and “King of My Hill,” and the Stonesy “Vida Blanche” — he enlisted the help of the Uptown Horns’ leader Crispin Cioe, a veteran of Rolling Stones tours whose Southern-fried additions on sax fit the material like a glove. And once a few later covers were added to the picture, including the captivating, bluesy spin taken with “Ain’t That Peculiar” featuring “Weso” Wesolowski on harp, the record was complete. Contemporary technology was used to reassemble the various generations of four-track tapes into first-generation sources, peeling back the layers to put the listener back in the room where it happened. The mono closing track, featuring a teenage Moss in his first band singing Buck Owens’s “Act Naturally” in rehearsal, was too cool not to include. The CD has three additional surprises from early-’90s sessions at Turtle Tapes in Winston-Salem: the Monkees’ “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” an instrumental of Pomus and Shuman’s “Can’t Get Used to Losing You,” and the Stones’ “Who’s Driving Your Plane?”

Easter: “I had a pretty good memory of this material, but when I actually heard it again, I was delighted that it really is great. Sam was always strangely unconcerned about stardom, but he was a star anyway. When you play the record, you'll see what I mean.” On July 30, 2021, the City of Winston-Salem honored Moss with a sidewalk star in the city’s Walk of Fame downtown.

After completing her Basque language album Mirande in collaboration with composer Xabier Erikizia (released on Forbidden Colors in October of 2020), Setién began composing Unfamiliar Minds during the height of lockdown, starting with songs she had begun in pre-pandemic times. As days turned to months Setién grew disconnected from the incomplete pieces made in a different reality. The paralyzing tension of those disorienting early months eventually gave way to new inspiration. Romantic poetry by Emily Dickinson served as a refuge and a springboard for Setién to ground herself in writing new songs in English. She drew inspiration from conversations with composers Gyan and Terry Riley as well as her collaboration with Xabier Erkizia for the Basque television series Altsasu. LISTEN HERE Berlin composer Maya Shenfeld’s music is as powerfully evocative as it is strikingly intimate. Through a mastery of sound sculpting and visionary approach to composition Shenfeld has established herself as one of the most vital voices in Berlin’s New Music scene. Her work exists in liminal spaces, collapsing the boundaries between electronic synthesis and organic sound as it draws equally from classical tradition and \UKLYNYV\UK L_WLYPTLU[HSPZT ,HJO HZWLJ[ VM OLY V\[W\[ MYVT ZP[L ZWLJPÄJ ZV\UK installations to works for new music ensembles and even playing guitar in punk bands, combines an astute technical prowess with an authentic, tangible expression of soul. Shenfeld’s debut solo record In Free Fall merges the grand vision of orchestral music with the granularity and intimacy of deep listening, exploring a tension between immaculately structured compositional architecture and the sheer joy of noise, grain and feedback. In Free Fall, named after Hito Steyerl’s essay, captures Shenfeld’s own feelings of “free fall” both with regards to the current moment, and to her growth as a composer. Trained as a classical guitarist, Shenfeld’s relocation to Berlin to study composition sparked a KYHZ[PJ L_WHUZPVU VM OLY OVYPaVUZ HUK WYHJ[PJL +P]PUN OLHKÄYZ[ PU[V [OL JP[`»Z W\UR and experimental music scenes, the composer found herself shuttling, literally and ÄN\YH[P]LS` IL[^LLU KPZWHYH[L T\ZPJHS ^VYSKZ" MYVT [OL NYHUK Konzerthaus Berlin to hole-in-the-wall Indie venues. In Free Fall reconciles Shenfeld’s classical training with her uncompromising spirit, resulting in beautiful iridescent constellations of sound. The physical nature of sound is central to Shenfeld’s work. She elaborates: “music can seemingly stretch, bend, and even break time, its ability to touch something in you, emotionally, and the fact that it’s a resolutely physical experience.” From tracks that collapse the boundaries between organic and digital instruments, where tape loops and sine wave inseparable from live brass from Kelly O’Donohue to a collaboration with James Ginzburg (Emptyset) taking Shenfeld’s commission for Bethanien Youth Choir, recorded at an abandoned 1902 swimming pool and manipulated into expansive ambient atmospheres. In Free Fall’s use of space and dynamics captures the distinctly three-dimensional nature of Shenfeld’s live performances and sonic installations. In Free Fall is a decisive statement from a crucial new voice in contemporary music, challenging traditional structures and narratives.Returning to the essay that gives the album its name, Steyerl’s description of “free fall” equally speaks to the wonderful sensation and innovation of Shenfeld’s music: “The horizon quivers in a maze of collapsing lines and you may lose any sense of above and below, of before and after, of yourself and your boundaries. [...] with the loss of horizon also comes the departure of a stable paradigm of orientation, which has situated concepts of subject and object, of time and space, throughout modernity. In falling, the lines of the horizon shatter, twirl around, and superimpose.”

OVERVIEW The Following in the tradition of some of the best Nordic rock from the last century, Jordsjø manages to meld progressive rock with fantastic melodies and a folkish twist. Spanning a musical journey from minimalist mellotron passages to full on rock tempest, Pastoralia is a must for any fan of Scandinavian prog, but also a gem to be discovered by the novice. Jordsjø is a duo from Oslo, Norway inspired by Olivier Messiaen, (German) Popol Vuh and Anthony Braxton, via Scandinavian folklore and jazz to early British prog. “Pastoralia” is their third studio album, which sees the band travelling further into jazzy, progressive musical landscapes. “Pastoralia” was recorded and produced in its entirety by Jordsjø between March and November 2020, in the basement of Bjørnerud Farm in Våler, Østfold. Thematically, the album is based on dreams, a longing for freedom and the fictional place “Pastoralia” – where every day is like tropical nights in Nothern Norway, where the forest people dance around campfires. Limited vinyl reprint on white vinyl for Bjørn Riis debut solo album, "Lullabies in a Car Crash". The album was very much a personal statement, with lyrics dealing with fear of abandonment, alienation and loss. It’s also homage to many of Bjørn’s musical influences. Bjørn is one of the founding members, the lead guitarist and main songwriter of the highly successful Norwegian band Airbag. Their releases have all received great reviews worldwide and all become favourites among fans all over the globe. "Lullabies in a Car Crash" feature six songs with a coherent and thematical composition. Bjørn’s soulful guitar playing and low-key vocals creates a rich listening experience. Although Bjørn as a guitarist have developed his own sound with a unique tone and his own technique over the years, the playing and tone are reminiscent of David Gilmour, Steven Rothery and Steven Wilson. As a singer, this is the first time he takes the lead, normally doing the backing vocals in Airbag. In addition to playing with Airbag, Bjørn is a highly respected guitarist within the guitar community, where he has a huge fan base. His guitar page “Gilmourish.com” has more than 40 million hits in total and an average of 150000 hits every week. "Lullabies in a Car Crash" feature Airbag’s Henrik Fossum on drums and Asle Tostrup providing loops and effects. Long-time Airbag collaborator Vegard Sleipnes has co-produced the album together with Bjørn. The album is mastered by Jamie Gomez (Orgone Studio).
