How did you personally get started in the music industry?

By necessity. In the 1970s no established labels were interested in what I was doing. The only way to release the music was to put it out myself. I financed the recording and manufacturing out of pocket—made 1000 copies— dropped them all at New Music Distribution Service uptown—and after about a year I used the royalties from sales to make the next recording.

When and where did the label begin?

Tzadik began in 1995 in NYC.

What is the meaning behind the name for the label?

In the Jewish world, a Tzadik is a righteous person. Someone you can trust to help guide you, and whose main concern is in improving the world. A Tzadik is an important, valued, and respected member of their community—and understands that everything in life has purpose and meaning.

How has the label changed since it started?

Not much—we continue to release music we believe in, and we have had new releases pretty much every month since we began. Tzadik is dedicated to releasing the best in avant-garde and experimental music, presenting a worldwide community of contemporary composer-performers who find it difficult or impossible to release their music through more conventional channels. Tzadik believes - most of all - in the integrity of its artists. What you hear on Tzadik is the artists’ vision undiluted.

Describe the general makeup of your team at the label.

The label team is tight. Four people. I make the artistic decisions. Kazunori Sugiyama handles contracts, bookkeeping and advises on production. Sarah Robertson handles manufacturing with her company A to Z. Heung-Heung Chin does all the design work.

What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?

Pledge Music went bankrupt owing us $200,000. But with the help of friends we managed to raise the money through donations and a Limited Edition Vinyl series. The Pandemic did not affect us at all. When the world is in chaos my system actually gets stronger!

Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?

We work out of NYC. There is no dedicated office space or phone line. Wherever we meet is our office. Last year Kazunori moved back to Japan but continues to work with us from there as strong as ever.

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

Tzadik is not tied to any one style or genre—and releases a very wide range of music.

We believe in music that is honest, imaginative, well crafted, and cathartic. How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?

Exactly the same. We believe in the integrity and personal vision of our artists, and continue to do what we believe in without compromise. Our mission is to support a passionate and dedicated community of musical adventurers. We do not suffer fools gladly, have little patience for people who do not give our work the respect we feel it deserves, and have no interest in the unstable world of musical fashion.

What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?

We do not and have never promoted our work in any way. We make it available. We neither cajole or convince people to buy it. It’s here—it’s great— and when you are ready for it you are most welcome into our world. This is not entertainment. It requires effort, thought, time, and consideration.

How would you describe the average fan of the label?

Open-minded and curious.

Blues guitar sensation releases his first live album, the eagerly-awaited followup to his Grammy Award-winning 2021 release, 662. OVERVIEW

Whether we look for him or not, we all find God somewhere. It could be in nature. It could be in church. It could be in the metaverse. It differs for each and every one of us. In terms of where God might be, The Kills aren’t necessarily saying, but the duo - Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince - certainly sound like they’ve seen him. How else could you explain the primal call-and-response between Alison’s full body blues-soul vocal catharsis and Jamie’s swaggering, guillotine-smooth guitar transmissions on the duo’s sixth full-length offering, God Games?

The Kills have emerged as international rock stars, setting the pace for the genre, shaping this era’s sound, and redefining what rock music can be in the 21st century. They’re the rare force of nature who can tour with Queens of the Stone Age or Guns N’ Roses and light up Coachella. Returning home from the road in 2019, Alison and Jamie commenced writing for what would become God Games However, the old adage, “Make plans, God laughs,” couldn’t have been more apropos.

“We started to share ideas and, suddenly, there was a Pandemic,” Alison says. “There was this strange gap where the universe collapsed in the middle of the album. Sometimes, you have to dig into uncomfortable places to get something good. I feel like we’ve done that on this record.”

Stretching boundaries, Jamie encouraged Alison to “buy this 100-dollar keyboard and try to write.” She added another creative tool to her arsenal, while he tinkered with textures, sounds and “wrote on guitar less than ever,” opting to primarily compose on piano for the first time. This powerful combination of forces gave the album its own sonic identity, a new path forged in the pair’s creative bond.

The Kills decamped to an old church (a bit ironic now isn’t it?) where they recorded with old friend and Academy and GRAMMY Award-winning producer Paul Epworth [Adele]. “Paul was our very first soundman in 2002,” recalls Jamie. “Since he was with us when we had two amps, a lightbulb, and a couple of mics in a van, it seemed perfect. He knew how far it had come and could trace the thread back.”

California-based supergroup, The Third Mind, will release their second album, The Third Mind 2, on October 27 via Yep Roc Records.

Featuring an all-star eclectic ensemble of like-minded musicians–Jesse Sykes (acoustic guitar, vocals); Dave Alvin (electric guitar); Victor Krummenacher (bass guitar); David Immerglück (guitar/harmonium/mellotron); and Michael Jerome (drums/percussion)-- The Third Mind 2 reflects the band members varied musical histories with a “no safety parachute” recording approach using free-form studio techniques, no rehearsals, no preconceived arrangements, and recording spontaneous group improvisations live in studio.

The six-song set, which runs the length of three LP sides, showcases songs written in the 1960s including, “Groovin’ is Easy,” “Why Not Your Baby,” “Sally Go Round The Roses,” among others, and an original composition, “Tall Grass,” written by Jesse Sykes and Dave Alvin for the album. The fourth LP side features The Third Mind Mandala etching by Tony Fitzpatrick. Produced by The Third Mind, the album was recorded by Will Golden at Sir Tiger Studio in Los Angeles, CA, mixed by Craig Parker Adams at Winslow Court Studios in Los Angeles, and mastered by David Glasser at Airshow Mastering.

On October 27, Yep Roc Records will release Full Time Men’s Part Time Job. Available on CD, Digital, and Limited Edition LP formats, Part Time Job marks the first time the band’s illustrious catalog is available on CD or digital platforms.

In the mid-to-late ‘80s, Full Time Men was a part time venture of Fleshtone Keith Streng (guitar and lead vocals) that featured Gordon Spaeth (sax, harp), Robert Warren (bass, vocals). and Bill Milhizer (drums), all full time members of New York’s Fleshtones, along with Rich Thomas (lead guitar, vocals) from LESR (Lower East Side Rockers). This compilation of the band’s material includes special guests Peter Zaremba (Fleshtones), Pat DiNizio (Smithereens), Dave Faulkner (Hoodoo Gurus), Stiv Bators, Jeff Connolly, Scott McCaughey, and Peter Buck.

The 20-track Part Time Job CD collects the band’s entire recorded catalog. It features four new songs, “We Were Using,” “Reinvented,” “Pink Cloud,” and “TOT (Toilet of Time),” plus songs from the band’s 1984 self-titled debut EP, Full Time Men, 1988’s Your Face My Fist, and 1999’s The Fabulous Sounds Of Coney Island EP. End of Ways is a bridge to healing as it was written during the period of helping a loved one escape an abusive household while working though its lingering horrors to find peace. On this second album release by indie label Kill Rock Stars, 18-year-old Elliott Fullam touches on even darker subject matter than his predecessor What’s Wrong which was a dissociative trip that reached out to thousands of like-minded music enthusiasts who hailed the record as their album of the year. And End of Ways is the next record that will continue in that same gentle melody which alleviates the emotional storm that torments so many of us.

Elliott’s sophomore full-length is a blend of home recordings as well as studio recordings which bring some extra depth within the songs to suit their somber settings in the tracks Throw It Away, Forget, and Better Way. But the record still retains its stripped down, lo-fi vibe in songs like Let’s Go Somewhere and Remember When with their clear Elliott Smith and Nick Drake influences in both the acoustic guitar lines and quiet vocals. The addition of young pianist Jeremy Bennett also beautifully adds candle-light melody throughout the album with his haunting notes in the opening song Mistake and his Tim Burton-meets-Vince Guaraldi style in the album’s escapist-themed title track End of Ways along with the dramatic climax to Timeless Tears and the album closer, Over the Moon which is Elliott’s profession of love to his present companion who he saved from her former home.

Elliott Fullam is slightly less timid this time around as he leads his journey on this record from loss, isolation and hopelessness to partnership, hope, freedom, and love. This is an indie/slowcore/acoustic album for fellow fans of Mazzy Star, Radiohead, Elliott Smith, Nick Drake, Big Thief, Crumb, and Alex G that explores childhood, dissociation, heartbreak and ultimately, survival.

This album had been unavailable for more than 15 years and is newly remastered.

Soul Jazz Records Miami Sound features rare and classic Funk and Deep Soul from Miami, Florida between 1968 and 1974. The album brings together million-selling artists such as Gwen McRae, George McRae and Timmy Thomas alongside artists little known outside of the sunshine state such as James Knight and The Butlers, Frank Williams and The Rocketeers and All the People.

Miami Funk, Soul and Disco was dominated by TK Records, founded by Henry Stone in the early 1970s. Through a myriad of associated record labels such as Alston, Blue Candle, Dash, Glades, Cat and more, TK Records made international artists out of Gwen McRae and her brother George McRae, Betty Wright and KC and The Sunshine Band, all in the mid-70s crossover period between Soul and Disco.

The music on this compilation shows the roots of this Miami Sound. All the artists and musicians on this album work together throughout the heyday of TK Records when it produced hit after hit on an almost daily basis. The house band (the equivalent to Motown's Funk Brothers) included songwriters such as Clarence Reid (AKA Blowfly, the adult comedian!), Casey Finch (KC from KC and The Sunshine Band) along with musicians Little Beaver, Frank Williams and Robert Moore. As well as being the in-house band, most of these artists also ran successful solo careers, making Miami one of the most musically creative hot spots in the USA.

The artists on this compilation include Helene Smith, Miami’s first lady of Soul, Frank Williams and The Rocketeers (featuring a very young Little Beaver on vocals), George McRae’s rare-groove classic "I Get Lifted" (written by Casey Finch), Timmy Thomas’ truly experimental track "Funky Me", Gwen McRae’s classic "90% of Me" as well as a host of practically unknown Miami artists who never managed to make it outside the city borders!

Soul Jazz Records’ Holy Church of the Ecstatic Soul: Gospel, Funk and Soul at the Crossroads 1971-83 draws upon the extensive links between black American gospel music and soul music, showing how the sensibilities of gospel artists such as Shirley Caeser, Dorothy Norwood, Andrae Crouch and others crossed over into secular soul music during this period.

The album was first available as a (sold out) ltd.edn. coloured vinyl for RSD23 and is now available as a black double vinyl + download edition and also for the first time on CD.

Many of the most successful soul artists - from Aretha Franklin to Al Green, The Staple Singers to Sam Cooke - all drew upon their upbringing in the church for their musical inspiration. This album discusses how important the links be tween the black church and soul music were in creating soul music and spotlights some of the many important (and also little-known) gospel artists who walked this line between sacred music and soul, funk and disco in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Holy Church of the Ecstatic Soul shows how sacred gospel music was at home with Stevie Wonder, Blaxploitation-style funk and produced music celebrated both in New York’s underground discos (The Paradise Garage, Studio 54, etc) and later sampled by the likes of Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg and Mary J Bilge.

A string of rapturously received EPs and singles made Sofia Kourtesis one of the fastest rising stars in the electronic world and beyond. OVERVIEW

The Chronicles of Father Robin is a Norwegian prog-rock supergroup, with members hailing from Norway’s symphonic prog kings Wobbler, the ever non-definable Tusmørke, seasoned post-rockers

The Samuel Jackson Five and the elusive prog gem that is Jordsjø. “The Songs & Tales of Airoea”, 30 years in the making, is a cohesive triple concept album with 18 songs set in an alternate archaic world for over a period of three decades. The first album, “Book I”, will be released on September 15th, with the single Eleision Fields preceding it.

The Chronicles of Father Robin (TCOFR) emerged from the remains of the band Fangorn back in 1993- 94, mainly inspired by the classic bands and albums of the early 1970s progressive music scene, alongside contemporary bands like Änglagård, Anekdoten, White Willow and Landberk.

During the years the boys created the story of the entity Father Robin. The root idea was that this creature embodied all the members of the band into one being. And as the members experienced challenges in life and their development as human beings, this translated itself into the story of Father Robin, sprinkled on top with a fair amount of inspiration from different mythologies and such. Through lengthy jam sessions and then more finely tuned arranging and structuring, the band developed an ongoing system where every song linked itself to the others. Holistic impulsivity and ideas, altruistic friendship, music, fantasies and coherent concept - all melded together in one pot, and everything took place in the archaic world of Airoea.

OVERVIEW

In 1987, Norwegian techno stalwart Per Martinsen didn’t write and release the single AMNESIACS under the artist name N∆EON TE∆RDROPS.

Instead, he left his Arctic hometown of Tromsø without any set destination in mind, and by sheer coincidence ended up squatting in Hackney, East London. Here, he was exposed to early Chicago house and Detroit techno - an event that spawned a career as an electronic dance music producer over the next three decades, releasing a well of records and remixes under his MENTAL OVERDRIVE moniker, as well as part of other projects and collaborations like ILLUMINATION/CHILLUMINATI and FROST.

But in a parallel universe, all this never happened. In an alternative corner of the multiverse, his musical journey stayed more true to the sounds of his formative years as a music lover, growing up on British and European electronic pop and indie, including artists like The Cure and Depeche Mode. The story of this other, possible timeline is investigated in the “multi-dimensional autobiography”

PYRAMIDS ON THE MOON, written over the last three years as part of an artistic PhD project at the Arctic University of Norway. It is a story of a life with different choices being made, leading to different personal development, resulting in different creative output as a musical artist than here in the “real” world - whatever that is.

N∆EON TE∆RDROPS’ debut album TESTIMONY is therefore a collection of the songs he never wrote and produced, but that have now surfaced through a rift in the veil between the worlds of what is and what could have been. The ten tracks on the album catch up on the influences of thirty years of electronic music, flirting with alternative electropop, echoes of eighties darkwave, breakbeat-fuelled nineties power ballads and noughties electronica - all brought to life with a 2023 twist.

ominous warped overture and album opener ‘ ’, or the affirmation of ‘a structure’, in which Omori intones over a celestial symphony of electronics. Then there’s ‘ ’, a song of reflection in which Omori reminds us to love, heal and have compassion towards ourselves. Whereas Omori’s debut was largely instrumen – “it’s more vulnerable,” she nods –

The end result is seamless, a firing ripple of ‘ ’), recorded and written between her bedroom in London and her grandmother’s house in Yokohama, Japan. “It was very DIY,” she laughs. “I was whispering into the microphone because I didn’t want to wake anyone up.” You’d never know it from pulsive ‘ ’: it’s the closest Omori has come to writing what chorus, driven along by the energetic force of a drum machine. On stillness, softness…, there is plenty that is hidden a slowly, like the slivers of layered distant conversation that start ‘cyanotype memories’. It’s surrealist artists’ penchant for assigning new meanings to everyday objects; each of her songs has an object on the album artwork. “It’s – what is real and isn’t real – and challenging your perception of things,” Omori says. With ‘foundation’, for example, the object is a trick lock. “I found it at a Japanese antique it’s an old padlo your most valuable possessions.” She saw it as a fitting metaphor for the song, where the ‘kura’ represents our mind. “The only things that block us from working through our stuck are the tricks and barriers we place on ourselves, and our own inhibitions.”

The album on the whole is Omori’s most accessible yet, and one that evidences her true track, completing the cycle. “I wanted it to evoke a state of peace that you reach within yourself,” says Omori. “I think of it as a blanket of sorts, very gentle, very calming.” That

Having underscored her status as one of Ireland’s most singular songwriting voices on her acclaimed debut album, Lilith, Naoise Roo returns with her highly-anticipated second album, Emotionally Magnificent, on 27th October. Released via North Carolina label Schoolkids Records, Emotionally Magnificent is offered as the culmination of a chapter of a journey that takes in both Lilith and Naoise Roo’s 2020 Sick Girlfriend EP, whose four tracks are incorporated here. Combined, it honours the full, sprawling majesty of Naoise Roo as a singular artist. Rather than some throwaway snapshot, released as a mere means to an end, Emotionally Magnificent is a slow focus triumph of reflection and resolve. “The Sick Girlfriend EP had a lot to do with my mental health and how I felt about navigating the music industry,” says Naoise Roo. “‘Falling Stars,’ for example, is about watching all these talented people around me hitting the wall and leaving music because it’s just too hard to keep going. ‘Sick Girlfriend’ itself is basically about the trope of the manic pixie dream girl and how that’s exploited, sexualised or slandered.”

“I think the difference between this new album and the last is that I'm not as frustrated as I was on Lilith. I was overwhelmed and struggling to reconcile my own sense of self and the expectations of others. There was definitely a feeling of acceptance when I wrote Emotionally Magnificent. In a lot of ways, Lilith is more outward-looking, pointing out the sources of my feelings, this album is more introspective. The call is definitely coming from inside the house.”

On one hand, Emotionally Magnificent is a deeply personal account that sees Naoise Roo peer deep into a thicket of epiphanies and anxieties, both coded and open-hearted. On the other, it’s an intensely exploratory release - in both senses of the word - with friends and long-time collaborators Mulvaney, Hyland, Fox, Trench and Tobin in tow. As a unit, they elevate a brand of experimental rock that is as looming, dark and heavy as it is unapologetically sensual and emotional. With it, preciousness over the music falls by the wayside to glorious effect. “This album is a collage of so many different things,” says Naoise Roo. “We took so many tiny elements, from playing drawers and hitting loads of random things to build a real textural soundscape. For me, one of the most fun and nourishing things is bringing together people who are infinitely talented and just working it out together as we go. It’s all about having an idea and playing around with it.”

“If I was to recreate something exactly like what I envisioned in the studio, I think I would be disappointed with the outcome. Either I’d do something in demo land that I would be too attached to and I wouldn’t feel like it had the same energy, or I would just labour over really tight details that weren’t that important to begin with. Bringing the right artists together just makes it exciting and in the moment.”

Bob Margolin gives THANKS to celebrate 50 years since he joined Muddy Waters Band. He plays the same Gibson archtop electric guitar that he played next to Muddy and The Band in The Last Waltz on every song here. He recorded one song by Muddy from 1952 and one that he and Muddy wrote together in 1977. He sings The Shape I’m In by The Band as a Blues with 4-part harmony. He interprets Willie Dixon’s Who, first done by Little Walter but later performed with Bob by R&B legend Nappy Brown. He covered Hard Working Man by his friend Jimmy Rogers, a Chicago Blues legend who played guitar with Muddy 25 years before Bob did. He rearranged Paul Gayten’s For You My Love, which Bob used to play with piano legend Pinetop Perkins when they played together with Muddy until Pinetop passed at 97 in 2011. And he played four of his own songs, rearranging them to be played on that Gibson archtop now. Old songs, old guitar, new fire.

Bob created every sound on the album except for the joyous bark of Levon Margolin, Bob’s Border Collie, during the guitar solo in “No Consolation.” He tracked, mixed, mastered and produced the album. It is a very personal labor of love and a five decade journey.

Bob’s time in Muddy’s band ended in 1980 and Muddy passed in 1983. Muddy’s unique spirit and voice are gone, but he deliberately placed Bob on the bandstand where he could follow, watch and learn. Particularly on slide guitar, Bob can evoke Muddy. Six months after he left Muddy’s band, he opened a show for Muddy. After, Muddy put his hands on Bob’s shoulders and said, “You’re keeping the Old School alive.”

The 19th installment of Saddle Creek’s Document series comes from two bandsBedlocked and Teethe.

Teethe and Bedlocked are, cumulatively, a sonic manifestation of the unyielding strength in sprawl that Texas has always had in droves. Bedlocked is music written by J. Zach Gomez while Teethe is a slowcore band currently based in Dallas, Texas whose members consist of Boone Patrello of Dead Sullivan, Grahm Robinson of MAH KEE OH, Madeline Dowd of Crisman, and Jordan Garrett of Hat Hair. On November 13, 2020, they self-released their debut, eponymous album.

Both tracks in this split carry a warm sentimentality, the kind of communal current that leaps from one shitty backyard beer to the next, shared with the chosen family of the house shows these two bands formed a new mold in. “All Over Again” is getting to a point where you nd yourself having to restart the process of growing and changing just when it felt like it you were getting better,” says Gomez of Bedlocked. The space created in the heavy, distorted churning of “All Over Again“ and the airy, loving banter of “Moon” both, in their opposition, evoke the kind of endless, open, questioning sky that you can count on no matter where in the Lone Star State you nd yourself.

The Document Series has always been about showcasing the untapped potential of DIY spaces across the country — what place could be more emblematic of that than the only state you can nd yourself touring through for an entire week, still feeling like you’ve more to see? Suburban outcasts, West Texas teens, and coastal punks reach a commonality through music here unlike anywhere else. Welcome to a new era of solidarity in reverb.

New Robohands LP Palms is the fifth album from the London based instrumentalist and producer Andy Baxter. Moving towards different genres and arrangements from his previous albums, Palms features duelling harp parts, tape echo, double bass and draws inspiration from artists such as Dorothy Ashby, Azimuth, Alice Coltrane and Toquinho. In parts tropical and synth drenched, and in others stripped back and acoustic, Palms is a journey back to saturated analog recordings of the late 60s and 70s, with a subtle modern layer of glitch FX and pitch control experimentation in places. The album makes also reference to classic releases from jazz fusion that feature the legendary Arp Odyssey synthesiser, used by artists such as Herbie Hancock and George Duke. As the music industry continuously evolves, pushing boundaries and challenging conventions, artists like Micahel Peter Olsen emerge to redefine the very essence of their chosen instruments. With an impressive career spanning nearly three decades, Olsen has had mainstream exposure through collaborations with renowned artists like Drake, Ed Sheeran, Arcade Fire, and Sharon Van Etten and developed multifaceted talents as a player, producer, composer, and Grammy-Nominated songwriter However, it is his electric cello-based solo project, which debuted in a grimy basement club in Berlin in 2019, and his 2021 full-length Yearning Flow that truly showcased his desire to subvert expectations of what a cello can be. On his upcoming LP Narrative of a Nervous System, Olsen continues his exploration of post-modernist styles, digging deeper through the possibilities of what the cello can do in the 21st century

Growing up in a British Columbia suburb, Olsen started music at the University of Toronto and fell into the soon-to-be world-renowned Canadian indie rock scene of the mid-1990s and early 2000s, playing in bands Hidden Cameras, Jim Guthrie, Constantines, and Arcade Fire

With the release of his second full-length Narrative of a Nervous System, Olsen taps into the prevailing sense of disconnection in modern society, accentuated by the recent pandemic. While the album is instrumental and conceptually driven, Olsen remains committed to making the music accessible and relatable. Compared to his previous work, Narrative of a Nervous System features shorter, more melodic instrumental pieces. Olsen’s vision is further realized by including special guests Owen Pallett, Màiri Chaimbeul, alaska B, and Zoon, each representing older music traditions. Celtic, European, North American Indigenous, and Traditional Chinese are explored and stretched, offering a modern perspective on ancient intuitively based traditions.

“My production style has always been about Real vs. Fake, presenting the apparent reality of something, revealing it to be false, and then presenting the actual reality as pure fantasy I love the simulacrum concept, that the copy is more real than real.” Olsen weaves these subversive elements into the album’s sound, challenging listeners’ expectations as to what they are hearing while still maintaining an immersive musical experience.

Nathan Davis "writes music that deals deftly and poetically with timbre and sonority" (NYTimes).

Inspired by natural processes and acoustic phenomena, his works reveal and exaggerate subtle complexities of sound, forming an architectural soundworld through which the listener travels in experiencing a piece. In Neutral Buoyant, Nathan turns his attention to the bowed psaltery (an American folk instrument) in a series of composed improvisations made with and without electronic processing. Approaching the psaltery as a glorious collection of monochords, Nathan employs violin bows, electromagnetic bows of different kinds, and guitar slides to activate the harmonics of its 32 open strings. Evoking ambient works by Eno and Laraaji, and spectral soundscapes of Saariaho, these six pieces display undulating drones, prismatic shifts of harmony, and microtonal vibrancy, creating motion while suspending time.

Spherical is a power trio: guitarist John King wanted this album to be rock, funk, blues, noise, and experimental, and so by instinct, Cindy Blackman-Santana and Bernie Worrell were the perfect musicians for accomplishing this. They found an abundance of trust, within an eight hour improvised recording session in 1994 at Baby Monster Studios in New York. The project had been missing for 29 years until John King found it in a box of unlabeled CDs, cassette tapes, and DAT tapes. During a time of cleansing, the lost was now found. Perhaps Spherical’s whereabouts were unknown because sometimes life has its own timelines, which can be distracting. Is it possible that music does, too? Conceivably, the music was ahead of its time and wanted to be known when it was this time. And maybe, this time is the right time to be known.

Icelandic artist and musician Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson is known not only for his work with Stilluppsteypa but also numerous solo albums and collaborations with Swedish composer BJ Nilsen as well as several other artists.

On Into the Second Half, his new solo album, recorded in 2022, Sigmarsson takes the listener into a calming yet mysterious world of sound. Starting from almost silence he creates a different state of listening that we could only find elsewhere when concerned with works of Robert Ashley. Carefully composed textures as subtle as the changes of light in the forbidden zone in Andrei Tarkovsky ’s Stalker weave in and out of each other to make for a hypnotic ride.

“I’m still learning how to experience joy, how to be free, how to be comfortable in my own skin,” says Jaime Wyatt. “A lot of us grow up feeling like we have to hide who we are just to be accepted, but that comes from a place of fear and judgment. Feel Good, Wyatt’s extraordinary new album, is more than just a permission slip, though: it’s an invitation. ‘The Twits’ was recorded by the trio over eight weeks from February 2023 in a makeshift home studio in Mallorca, and was mixed by Marta Salogni. The thirteen new tracks find bar italia’s economical yet evocative songcraft taking raucous, mystic, unkempt, occasionally sinister, and wholly committed turns. Songs like “my little tony”, with its in-the-red riff and excitable hooks, the cathartic four-on-the-floor of ‘world’s greatest emoter’ and the festival tent psychedelia of “Hi-fiver” need little in the way of exposition – these are exhilarating rock songs, if wayward and strange.

Veirs culled through over 900 voice memos on her phone to curate these 14 songs for her 13th album.

Phone Orphans is a 14-track clutch of selfrecordings that she culled from more than 900 unreleased voice memos made in less than a decade. But this is not, it should be said now, merely an odds-and-sods assortment of outtakes and castoffs; these are merely first takes of songs that previous producers decided did not belong on Veirs’ past records. But they now hang together beautifully, an intricate portrait of a life captured in the sharp images and soft melodies that have become Veirs’ touchstones.

The process was simple and iterative. Veirs would put her phone on the table, press ‘Record’ on its most basic app, and pick and sing inside the place she called home. She would sometimes try entirely new arrangements for the same words or vice versa, creating a web of alternates. When the song was good enough for Veirs, she would transcribe it into the stack of more than a dozen three-ring binders that now fill a full kitchen shelf, immortalizing it for herself. To make Phone Orphans, Veirs listened back to the mass of songs that never left that shelf, steadily shaping these 35 minutes that alternately feel as light as a breeze and heavy as an incoming storm.

Hot off the heels of executive producing Loyle Carner’s ‘hugo’, Kwes returns with the soundtrack to Raine Allen-Miller’s debut feature, Rye Lane - a rom com made in loving tribute to south London. This original score sounds continues on Kwes trademark blend of soul, indie and electronic and features guests Sampha and Tirzah. Kwes’ score accompanies their sublime journey in Rye Lane perfectly, a soundtrack just as sweet as the film itself. Speaking about his involvement and vision for the soundtrack, Kwes explans: “Director Raine and music supervisor David reached out asking if I was up for scoring a rom-com. I was familiar with Raine’s work in music videos and commercials, we also have mutual friends, but of course had no idea she was working on what became Rye Lane. I was sort of aware of how difficult it could be scoring for this genre of film, but then Rye Lane is such a unique take on the rom-com, perhaps even transcends it. So, they sent me the script along with a mood-board and I instantly said yes; so much about it excited me and made me chuckle. Once I had agreed and had an edit of the film sent to me, to my surprise I found that a fair bit of the temp score was my own older music, which of course made my job a bit easier, re: knowing what they were looking for. It was such a joy and pleasure working with the whole crew and with Raine, who is indeed a true visionary.

Danielle Howle is a free spirit on a mission: “I want to be your friend, but also blow your mind,” she says – and on her latest album, the South Carolina songbird accomplishes both with tenderness, charm, and effortless ease.

A lifelong artist and natural storyteller, Howle has lived a million lives in one, releasing well over a dozen studio albums in a twenty-five-year career that has traversed genres, styles, and cultures, encompassing everything from country-swamp-blues and jazz to folk, southern rock, indie, and Americana – all while endlessly exploring the depths of the human condition. She’s opened for legends like Bob Dylan and Bonnie Raitt, and was a close friend of the late singer/songwriter Elliott Smith, but Howle doesn’t focus on, nor does she live in the past: Her head and her heart are in the present, as is made abundantly clear throughout her highly anticipated sixteenth studio album, Currents (out November 2023 via Kill Rock Stars Nashville).

Currents is a particularly intimate, up-close-and-personal record that puts Howle and her raw humanity front and center. “I wanted to be folk as fuck, man,” she laughs. “Staying very earthy and folky. I’ve done lots of different styles of music, which caused battles between people that wanted to help promote me. For me it was more about the people and what kind of music we would make together. In my early years we were a family, and we would make what the family wanted to make. In my later life, I’ve found the people I’ve wanted to do it with.”

Howle cites Currents and her 1999 release Catalog as two albums existing at the epicenter of her own vision, rather than that a collective. “It’s also the vision of producer Jeff Leonard, Jr.,” she adds. “He wanted to record an album with me that showed the sonic essence of me and showed my voice.” Working with Leonard, Howle brought on musicians like guitarist Josh Roberts, who adds his own flare to the album as well.

That vision is one of urgency and connection. “I’m just listening to what my spirit and what the earth wants me to write right now,” Howle admits. “I feel like my songs are reminders that we’re not alone, and we’re part of something greater than ourselves, and there’s a responsibility there. That’s where I feel things, but I don’t want to say that out loud; I just want to live it through my observations and what I write about.”

JUNIOR SCAIFE

On his debut 45, Junior Scaife shows us he's a vocal heavyweight whose prowess on the mic is tantamount to the pen. Backed by house band The Penrose Scholars and co-written by producer, Anthony Masino, "When My Heart Breaks" is a bouncy stepper with feel-good vibes and groove in equal measure, serving up a Brenton Wood-esque blast of sunshine and soul. On the flip is "Moment to Moment" a gorgeous, bluesy ballad with a vocal performance that transcends the trappings of lesser tunes, giving it a depth and seriousness that takes you by the heart and mind to a place where longing and love reign supreme.

“Guitar Improvisation and Tashi Dorji are the first physical releases of my guitar improvisations. They were put out by a small local, now defunct, label called Headway Recording in 2012 and 2013. The friends who ran the label had heard some of my guitar music and reached out to me about doing a cassette release.

Guitar Improvisations was really my first recording of improvisation in a semi-studio setting at my friend’s basement space. It really was a formative time for me because it felt like everything opened, as far as the possibilities of what music-making meant. Like improvisation walked in and then there was a volcanic eruption

The self-titled session was recorded at a nice studio at the local university here in Asheville. I had some friends that were studying music there and had access to studio time. This session focused more on extended/prepared guitar ideas. My interest in percussive elements of sounds, timbre, harmonics, and dynamics plays a lot in this recording.”

Jordsjø is a duo from Oslo, Norway inspired by Olivier Messiaen, (German) Popol Vuh and Anthony Braxton, via Scandinavian folklore and jazz to early British prog. Be it in the shape of dance, a mountain hike, a fairytale, religious pondering or other kinds of inner travels, in a colourful symphonic folk-rock sound. The music is a counterpoint to the mundane everyday life, and longs for mystery and alternate realities – with grand dynamics and dramatics, always searching for a good melody. In the remote forests of north-eastern Finland, a primal force has been unleashed. Noitila, translated roughly as ‘Witches’ Bay’, resonates with the ancient echoes of a sacred land where worlds and energies intersect.

Bastard Jazz is proud to present the first solo record from Daniel David (FKA Trailer Limon) - known for his work in the legendary SF duo the Pendletons. Daniel was responsible for helping to kickstart the “Modern Funk” resurgence that happened in the Bay in the mid 2000’s.

On this 7”, Daniel continues pushing boundaries with two heavy tracks influenced by the sounds of Brazil. "Tambor De Cura” sees him teaming up with Bay Area staples Jazz Mafia and Rio De Janeiro artist Guinu to cook up a genre-defying dancefloor hitter that blends dirty analog Brazilian funk, sci-fi synth sounds and raw horn lines with an unstoppable bass hook. Midway, the song transitions into a Samba break with a beautiful trumpet solo, while seamlessly returning to its infectious house tempo. Guinu’s passionate vocals highlight the healing power of the music. On "Devotion", Daniel and Jazz Mafia bring a rich up-tempo offering. Building off of a hypnotic jazzy house piano and tapestry of congas and live percussion, Daniel soulfully paints a picture of connecting to spirit through one’s inner world. Jazz Mafia’s driving horns build throughout, propelling the track, with relief by an energetic drum breakdown and conga solo.

Currently based in Dallas, TX, Daniel is one half of San Francisco’s boogie funk outfit The Pendletons, which he heads up with musical partner E Da Boss. Growing up around a diverse palate of music, Daniel connected strongly to mid-eighties rap and freestyle music, while also being enthralled with the rock and jazz fusion music from his father’s record collection. Waiting For The Rain was produced by Dave Eringa (Manic Street Preachers) and recorded at Rockfield studios in Monmouth and The Libertines Albion Rooms studios in Margate.

Having just completed an Arena Tour of America with Louis Tomlinson, Andrew Cushin is on the road again with Louis across Europe in August/September. Wor Flags, released last month, is the fifth track (following It’s Coming Round Again, 4.5%, You’ll Be Free and Dream For A Moment) to be taken from Waiting For The Rain. A new single Just Like You’d Want Me To is released August 30th.

23-year-old singer-songwriter Andrew Cushin is Newcastle’s fastest rising star. He has already recorded with Noel Gallagher and counts Paul Weller and Sam Fender among his biggest cheerleaders. Andrew grew up on a council estate in Heaton, Newcastle. His songs, delivered in a gorgeous baritone that sounds way beyond his years, are full of his experiences growing up, his lust for life, his grief at the loss of loved ones, his hopes and fears, his love and his stoicism. Meatraffle are thrilled to announce they will be releasing 'Base and Superstructure', their third studio album on Blang Records on 29.09.2023. Recorded during lockdown, produced & mixed by Meatraffle keyboardist Chris OC, Dante Traynor (SWEAT, Fat White Family 'Feet'), additional mixing by Angelica Björnsson (Hi - Texas feat. Wu Tang Clan) and mastered by Dean Honer (Eccentronic Research Council, I Monster, The Moonlandingz), ‘Base and Superstructure’ marks a new sonic departure for the band rightly acknowledged as godfathers of the now infamous South London scene, centred around the Windmill in Brixton.

Founded in 2014, Meatraffle have toured extensively across the UK and Europe as both a headline act and support to the likes of Fat White Family, Sleaford Mods and Warmduscher. Festival appearances include SXSW, Green Man and Liverpool Psych Fest. In addition to their previous two LPs ('Hi Fi Classics' and 'Bastard Music'), the band have released singles on Dan Carey's Speedy Wunderground and Moshi Moshi, plus numerous remixes including 'Meatraffle on the Moon' by the one and only Andrew Weatherall. The band have also played sessions for Marc Riley (BBC 6Music) plus regular plays from other 6Music DJs including Iggy Pop, Gideon Coe and Amy Lamé.

“We were looking for labels for a while, sending out demos to small ‘indie’ labels to which we often had the response, ‘we really like it but we’re not signing anyone at the moment’, which feels like the new ‘don’t call us we’ll call you!”’.. We knew we had a good record so didn’t get knocked back and knew it would be a climb as many of these small and large ‘indie’ or ‘alternative’ labels can be even more conservative than the mainstream, I guess having less money and therefore having to ‘play it safe’. “I would start with calling it a rock record ”

So says Kevin Micka about Shelf Life, the vibrant, multifaceted new album from his ever-evolving vehicle for musical exploration, Animal Hospital At first glance, it’s a claim likely to rouse skepticism: clocking in at 35 minutes, the four songs of Shelf Life are wordless and full of alien textures with nary a verse, chorus, or bridge to speak of. But sit with Micka’s take while the needle drops on “Fuselage” and his cryptic intent will surely reveal itself. After all, what’s rock music but a melting pot anyway ? In The Last Waltz, Levon Helm said something to the effect of “country, bluegrass, blues music, show music: put them in a room, let them dance together and you get something new and exciting.” The music of Shelf Life functions the same way, just with modern ingredients There are riffs, after all, but those expect ing Led Zep songs can seek those on the other pole of this planet

Shelf Life would not exist without The Box, a 19” x 10” x 6" chassis Micka built containing the aforementioned electronics as a means to streamline touring During its creation, he added features like percussive switches, a contact mic, and an unmute button, turning The Box into an instrument in and of itself Its creation signaled a shift, and soon Micka began composing and performing in a different, unencumber ed way: “I became less concerned whether I could pull these off in a live setting on my own Nothing needs to be definitive and everything can and should be reinterpreted and continue to live on in a new and different life Some tracks continued feeling best in a solo context, even more deconstructed than my early material, but at the same time, I thought bigger ”

Unlike all previous Animal Hospital records, Shelf Life storms out of the gate with immediacy ”Fuselage” literally p icks up where Animal Hospital left off, built off a few measures of floor toms from a live show, which soon create a rhythmic playground for breakbeats, crackling electronics, a student-model Sears Silvertone, and Micka’s reverberating yodel At its finish arrives a

ferocious electric guitar that would make Prince proud On “Awful Beast,” Micka builds the subject from the ground up, starting with the sound of marching hooves before moving onto its breath, sculpting aural b ones, muscle, and flesh on top of one another until the creature is alive and seething “His Amazing Friends,” which encompasses nearly all of Shelf Life’s backside, plays out like a marching band slowly but furiously careening off the rails Tension is built and destroyed twice throughout its 16+ minutes, pushing the sonic envelope in each cycle “As Always” functions as the album’s coda, a gentle counterpoint to everything heard on Shelf Life Instead of an intensely labo red recording, “As Always” is a single take of Micka’s improvisations while testing out a newly repaired amp, captured on his field recording device

Denovali presents Spark and Earth, the ninth full length album from acclaimed NYC-based composer and performer Mario Diaz de Leon.  Long celebrated for his electroacoustic chamber music, Spark and Earth is the first of Diaz de Leon’s solo albums to foreground his performance as a metal guitarist, alongside a vividly textured electronic ensemble of terse synth stabs, woodwind and vocal timbres, floor rattling synth bass, and propulsive kick drums.  Songs such as Cruces, Templo, Kepha, and Elemental evoke rave-metal anthems, foregrounding a vibrant alchemy of thrash guitars with percussive synths.  Aqua, Breath of God, and Carnelian seamlessly weave lead and chiming guitar lines with meticulously charted electronics and hammered dulcimer timbres. Carnelian charts the alluring flow of a single melodic line through the instruments of the ensemble, while the haunting analog synth interplay of Mirror Spirit recalls the vivid electroacoustic works of previous releases.  Over nine songs and 30 minutes, Spark and Earth is an alchemical journey through Diaz de Leon’s electronic chamber metal.

Since 2009, Diaz de Leon has released four recordings of his collaborations with chamber ensembles (International Contemporary Ensemble, Talea, TAK), while from 2012-2016 he produced three solo electronic albums under the project name Oneirogen.  With the two-song album Heart Thread (2022), he began releasing electronic works under his own name.  His music has been celebrated over the last decade for its “hallucinatory intensity” (New York Times), “snarling exuberance” (Pitchfork), and “remarkable textures and vivid atmosphere” (New Yorker Magazine).  As collaborator, he is guitarist and vocalist in the extreme metal duo Luminous Vault (Profound Lore Records), and performs synth and drum machine in Bloodmist, an electroacoustic improvisation trio with Jeremiah Cymerman and Toby Driver.  In 2023, he collaborated with Eartheater and members of Krallice in a performance of songs from her album Trinity.  Since 2019, he has taught at Stevens Institute of Technology as Assistant Professor of Music and Technology.
