What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?
We haven’t pulled a ton of ‘wild’ marketing stunts, but one moment that sticks out (haunts me?) was when we did Connan Mockasin paper face masks for the audience at our 10 year show - they were eyeless and really fucking creepy….and they were everywhere!
If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outside-the-box” or “crossover” marketing campaign?
How about a Cate Le Bon Super Bowl commercial? Just give her the reins and let her run wild with that outlandish budget…
What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released?
How did you personally get started in the music industry?
I bounced around a lot, just trying to figure it out - I interned at CMJ around 1997 and then started working at Bowery Ballroom when it first opened, being a stagehand, ringing out monitors, etc. Then I moved onto labels, interning, temping, etc. One of my first experiences was working the switchboard at BMG, which was a trip. I was at J records, RCA, and eventually landed at Astralwerks around 2001 where I worked for a project manager and the A&R director, and met my future partner, Andres, who was working in the production dept.
When and where did the label begin?
Mexican Summer started in earnest around 2007, but our first release (a 12” w/ Dungen) didn’t drop until Summer, 2008. The label started out of the first Kemado office in Manhattan at the Starrett Lehigh building on W.26th St. What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
I pulled the name from a song I was into; I loved how it looked written, and thought it sounded beautiful, but also kind of foreboding. In other words, there’s no real meaning, but hopefully it sparks the imagination a little...
How has the label changed since it started?
Quite a bit - we started as a subscription service that had 4 of us working the releases. The volume was also insane back then - we probably dropped 25-30 releases one year. We quickly shed that model, opting to become a more ‘traditional’ label, and over time, honed a more realistic release slate, while growing our team and int’l footprint.
Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. We have an A&R crew, creative direction/design, COO and operations, biz dev, commercial team (focused on both physical and digital), project management (across NY and London), Digital marketing, social media and production…
Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?
We’re based in NY, and always have been, but I wouldn’t say there’s ever been an A&R strategy that reflects that. We’ve worked with more artists that aren’t from NY over the years.
Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about?
Hard to say! Not one particular place - I’m getting older, so while I’m always continuing to listen, I’m also very clear that I need a crew w/ younger energy around me! So, I’d say music is sometimes coming from those folks, along with a smaller set of trusted sources… on top of the regular sleuthing I do.
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
I think we just try to work with good people who almost always seem to have a skewed take on pop music. I wouldn’t say there’s any particular style or genre we look for, but the connective tissue across our catalog is made up of adventurous writers.
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?
The goal remains the same, which is simply supporting art we believe in and (hopefully) putting out compelling records.
We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?
Impossible, but three that I go back to often: L’Rain (Fatigue), Jack Name (Magic Touch) and Jessica Pratt (Quiet Signs) - all records that give more with repeat listens.
We always look to offer a color variant for independent record stores, which seems to get people excited. We’ve also recently done some color editions to celebrate album anniversaries (No Joy, Huerco S., Dungen, Robert Lester Folsom, and Weyes Blood).
Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs??
We never really stopped making either, to be honest, though it happens less often and in smaller quantities (particularly in the case of cassettes). If the project calls for it, we’re game to explore it…
How would you describe the average fan of the label?
Our varied release output from artists all over the world makes this a difficult question to answer (thankfully!). I would say that it’s a goal to continue broadening our reach and diversifying our releases to pull in as wide an audience as we can.
Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own?
I did - but let’s keep those bodies buried! Mostly very shitty punk and hardcore bands.
In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days?
Very important, but inherently difficult because we make vinyl. That said, we try to lessen that impact by keeping transport to a minimum and assembling/ printing/pressing in one place. Our paper/board stocks are FSC certified and inks/varnishes are water based. The pressing plant we work with produces and recycles vinyl compound - and offers the option to press using 100% recycled vinyl. All LPs are shipped in recycled cardboard and pallets are made of recycled paper. Lastly, I think our hope is that we’re releasing music that is not disposable, which will hopefully enjoy a long shelf life…
How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?
Both issues are hugely important to us. We’ve made sure to reflect this through our company culture, creating PTO policies that focus on personal health needs and forming an internal committee dedicated to taking steps towards supporting social justice inside our industry and community.
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
Streaming for sure, but also just the expectation on the artist to ‘create content’. There are so many hoops to jump through, depending on how one chooses to engage. It feels a little like the wild west out there, which can be both exhilarating and overwhelming…
If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards?
Loss Leaders — it’d just be comps of choice bargain bin soft rock/aor. Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance:
Tough to choose, but will shout out a bunch here that have served us well over the years - End of an Ear, Freakbeat, Rocket Number Nine, Strictly Discs, Brooklyn Record Exchange, Academy, Rough Trade, Music Millenium - too many to list! They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered?
Being remembered is honestly not something I think of. I feel lucky to do what we’re doing now, and am grateful there’s an audience.

CAT POWER SINGS DYLAN: THE 1966 ROYAL ALBERT HALL CONCERT
OVERVIEW
Last November in London, Cat Power took the stage at Royal Albert Hall and delivered a song-for-song recreation of one of the most fabled and transformative live sets of all time. Held at the Manchester Free Trade Hall in May 1966—but long known as the “Royal Albert Hall Concert” due to a mislabeled bootleg—the original performance saw Bob Dylan switching from acoustic to electric midway through the show, drawing ire from an audience of folk purists and forever altering the course of rock-and-roll. In her own rendition of that historic night, the artist otherwise known as Chan Marshall inhabited each song with equal parts conviction and grace and a palpable sense of protectiveness, ultimately transposing the anarchic tension of Dylan’s set with a warm and luminous joy. Now captured on the live album Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert, Marshall’s spellbinding performance both lovingly honors her hero’s imprint on history and brings a stunning new vitality to many of his most revered songs.
A singularly gifted song interpreter whose catalog includes three acclaimed covers albums (2000’s The Covers Record, 2008’s Jukebox, 2022’s Covers), Marshall holds an especially strong affinity for the songwriter-poet she refers to as “God Dylan.” Like the original concert (and all of Dylan’s 1966 world tour), Marshall kept the first half of her set entirely acoustic, then went electric for the second half with the help of a full band.
As revealed on Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert, Marshall approached every song in the setlist with both heartfelt reverence and a deep understanding of the delicate nature of song interpretation. And while Marshall admits to a nervous anticipation prior to the show, a certain sense of devotion helped to carry her through the night. “I had and still have such respect for the man who crafted so many songs that helped develop conscious thinking in millions of people, helped shape the way they see the world,” says Marshall. “So even though my hands were shaking so much I had to keep them in my pockets, I felt real dignity for myself. It felt like a real honor for me to stand there.”

In his 50-year tenure as conductor of The Boston Pops, Arthur Fiedler transformed the Boston Symphony Orchestra offshoot into perhaps the most renowned pops orchestra in the world. A natural showman, the maestro fervently believed in broadening the reach of classical music to a wide audience. He famously incorporated the music of The Beatles into his programs and began the tradition of the Pops concert and fireworks every July 4th on Boston’s Esplanade. Under his auspices, The Boston Pops made more recordings than any other orchestra in the world. Along with the Fourth, one holiday was closely associated with Fiedler and the Pops: Christmas! The orchestra introduced Leroy Anderson’s now-classic “Sleigh Ride” in 1948, and the very next year recorded it for RCA Victor. Between 1961 and 1970, families across the United States delighted in an annual series of Christmas releases available exclusively through Goodyear stores. A whopping 900,000 copies of the first volume of The Great Songs of Christmas were pressed–and proved so successful that, by December 1, 1961, Goodyear ordered all advertising to stop as the album had already sold out! The following year’s order was for 1.5 million albums, and 2 million the year after that. These high-quality albums not only featured the era’s top artists but frequently presented songs and versions unavailable anywhere else. The Great Songs of Christmas: Masterworks Edition brings together 18 lush selections primarily drawn from the original, long out-of-print series of LPs, featuring the most beloved carols of all time as performed by the greatest classical artists of the 20th century. The remastered album features a bonus live recording of the Lightning Slim track, “Nothing But The Devil.” The audio was remastered from original source material and pressed at GZ Vinyl in the Czech Republic.

As she set out to conceive the music for her third album as a leader, drummer/composer Mareike Wiening [pronounced: Mar-EYE-kuh VEE-ning] glanced around and discovered a wealth of potential inspirations in the tumultuous events of recent years. Of course, there were the global upheavals that we’ve all watched unfold with bated breath: the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, political divisiveness in the U.S., Europe and beyond.
Realizing that such heady subjects could result in a decidedly stark and somber album, Wiening chose not to react but to reveal, searching inward for the warmth and spirit that connected her with music in the first place. The album is infused with melodic bird songs and sound walk memories that add depth and texture to the ethereal soundscape. Ozcan’s array of self-crafted instruments made out of bamboos, soda bottle caps, straws, house keys, terracotta flower pots alongside with his long time companions like his steel drums, chimes, gongs, and vibraphone, serve as the medium through which he expressed the reflections of his encounters in his own world of rhythm and melody.

Bathed in a green haze, the crowd oozed to the mutant rock and roll roaring from the basement’s dusty depths — everything and everyone was sweaty and sticky. But as Speedy Ortiz crammed into the back corner, their grins just inches away from ours, D.C.’s Dougout became a moshed-andsloshed sauna of 20-somethings delirious on rock euphoria.
After spending much of the new millennium bored out of my skull by network soap indie, Speedy Ortiz was rock’s wild howl. The songs were unpredictable, yet weirdly memorable, swaggering with a winky and wry sense of self. Riffs would twist with a topsy tenderness, then slam a ruptured discord. Sadie Dupuis’ sphinxian-yet-sensitive lyrics were not only matched but accentuated by her coil-sprung vibrato. How could Speedy Ortiz not immediately become my new favorite band?
What began as a short-lived solo project recorded in Dupuis’ off-hours as a rock camp counselor became a four-piece band in Northampton, Mass., by the end of 2011. They made cool mixtapes, cracked inside jokes and gushed about teenagers that opened for them on tour. They freaked out (via LiveJournal) when they met the bassist from Polvo or Helium’s Mary Timony, but also rolled their eyes at ‘90s indie-rock comparisons. The band’s first single — the gender-bending gotlaid grunge yowler “Taylor Swift’’ — elicited that rare response of the simultaneous giggle and headbang. The Sports EP amped up the taut yet rubbery riffery.
Released July 9, 2013, Major Arcana is filled with wedding chapel exorcisms, oiled-down attractants and criminally twisted puny little villains — this is Dupuis’ haunted lexicon as she scales the toxic Aggro Crag of a breakup. And while Dupuis wrote these songs, the band’s convulsing arrangements and diverse influences sprawled the squigglier edges of feedbacked fuzz to mete out matters of the heart. Falcone — who, it’s worth noting, has a knack for vocal harmony — swung as much as he smashed the drums. In easily tipoverable songs, Ferm’s burly bass and percussive overdubs gave the unruly glee its momentum. Robidoux ripped skronky guitar solos and countered Dupuis’ riffs with decorative splatter. Over a four-day marathon session at Sonelab in Easthampton, recording engineer Justin Pizzoferrato sparked the studio imagination of Speedy Ortiz — not only leaning into gritty tones but layer-caking dense dynamics that made these songs pop and pulverize.
For all her sweet-toothed seething, Dupuis was not easy on herself. Everyone’s allowed the idiot growing pains of your 20s and the misery that follows, but I can only imagine the emotional exhaustion that playing these songs on the road, night after night, must have wrought. “But you left something on my lips: a mark so sick,” she repeats over the doomy destruction that ends the album. Thinking back to the many Speedy Ortiz shows I caught in those early years, including an unofficial after-after party for my own wedding, “MKVI” often served as the noisy down-and-out closer — heads would bang in solidarity as the crowd became co-authors in the chaos, the biting phrase now a hex, Speedy Ortiz forever our coven. —Lars Gotrich

EXPERT IN A DYING FIELD
On The Beths’ new album Expert In A Dying Field, Elizabeth Stokes’ songwriting positions her somewhere between being a novelist and a documentarian. The songs collected here are autobiographical, but they’re also character sketches of relationships -- platonic, familial, romantic -- and more importantly, their aftermaths. The shapes and ghosts left in absences. The question that hangs in the air: what do you do with how intimately versed you’ve become in a person, once they’re gone from your life?
The third LP from the New Zealand quartet houses 12 jewels of tight, guitar-heavy songs that worm their way into your head, an incandescent collision of power-pop and skuzz. With Expert, The Beths wanted to make an album meant to be experienced live, for both the listeners and themselves. They wanted it to be fun in spite of the prickling anxiety throughout the lyrics, the fear of change and struggle to cope.
Most of Expert was recorded at guitarist Jonathan Pearce’s studio on Karangahape Road in Ta–maki Makaurau, Aotearoa (Auckland, New Zealand) toward the end of 2021, until they were interrupted by a four-month national lockdown. They traded notes remotely for months, songwriting from afar and fleshing out the arrangements alone. The following February The Beths left the country to tour across the US, and simultaneously finish mixing the album on the road, culminating in a chaotic three-day studio mad-dash in Los Angeles. There, Expert finally became the record they were hearing in their heads.
The album’s title track “Expert In A Dying Field” introduces the thesis for the record: “How does it feel to be an expert in a dying field? How do you know it’s over when you can’t let go?” Stokes asks. “Love is learned over time ‘til you’re an expert in a dying field.” The rest is a capsule of The Beths’ most electrifying and exciting output, a sonic spectrum: “Silence is Golden,” with its propulsive drum line and stop-start staccato of a guitar line winding up and down, is one of the band’s sharpest and most driving. “Knees Deep” was written last minute, but yields one of the best guitar lines on Expert
Stokes strings it all together through her singular songwriting lens, earnest and selfeffacing, zeroing in on the granules of doubt and how they snowball. Did I do the wrong thing? Or did you? That insecurity and thoughtfulness, translated into universality and understanding, has been the guiding light of The Beths’ output since 2016. In the face of pain, there’s no dwelling on internal anguish -- instead, through The Beths’ music, our shortcomings are met with acceptance. And Expert In A Dying Field is the most tactile that tenderness has been.

On Rock Island, their second LP, Palm produces evidence of a distinct musical language, developed over time, in isolation, and out of necessity. On the island, melodies are struck on what might be shells or spines. Rhythms are scratched out, swept over, scratched again. Individual instruments, and sometimes entire sections, skip and stutter. There is the sense of a music box with wonky tension or a warped transmission in which all the noise is taken for signal.
Like other groups so acclaimed for their compulsive live show, Palm has been burdened by the constant comparison between their recorded material and their touring set. On Rock Island, they render this tired discussion moot, using the album form to present that which could never be completely live, reserving for performance that which could never be completely reproduced.
Despite appearing behind the instruments typical of rock music, Palm trades in sounds of their own making. On these songs, one of the guitars and the drum kit are used as MIDI triggers, producing an index that can be combed through later and replaced with new information. The percussion is sometimes augmented so as to suggest a multiplication of limbs. The strings are manipulated to choke, crack, and hum like other instruments, or other bodies, might.
Working again with engineer Matt Labozza, the band spent the better part of a month in a rented farmhouse in Upstate New York. With the benefits of time and space, Palm recorded the various elements piecemeal, only rarely playing together in groups larger than two or three. While some members tracked, others holed up in the next room, experimenting with quantization, beat replacement, and other methods borrowed from electronic music. Even accounting for the many labors that brought them to be, these materials seem produced by an organic logic. Their complex friction forms a habit of thought, scores a network of grooves on the floor of the mind.
This is music with dimensionality. Sonic objects are deployed, developed, and dissected in various states of mutation. The listener flits about between the field and the lab. The tone is warm in a way only the sun could make, the pace as forceful and as variable as a gale. Whether one locates Rock Island in a sea or in a refinished attic (as in Greg Burak’s album cover), whether one escapes to there or is banished, its psychic environs are charted clearly enough. Only at this remove from the mainland can we sense the conditions necessary for such a strange species of sound.

trip9love…??? is the third album from Tirzah, produced by long-time musical collaborator Mica Levi.
It was written and recorded at both their homes and various corners of South East London and Kent.
After several recording sessions over roughly a year, eventually the music suddenly came into a sound that they wanted to follow. The tracks were built using piano loops on top of one beat, distortion added, then romantic vocal toplines. Poems center on themes of love, both real and imagined. The world the record finds space in is a lazy club fantasy zone.
The speed, the connection and similarity between all of the instrumentals led the record to feel like one song, a diary entry of a moment or a fascination with one sound that they felt was important to go with. The nature of trip9love…???‘s release reflects how it was made.

The fifth and final volume of the early-’00s Home series of short split albums is getting its first North American vinyl release
The album, originally released in 2003, features exclusive, stripped-down recordings by two artists closely associated with Barsuk – Benjamin Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service) and Andrew Kenny (The American Analog Set, The Wooden Birds).
This CANARY YELLOW indie-store exclusive color variant is limited to 1700 copies worldwide, and features beautiful artwork borrowed from the album’s only previous – and long out-of-print – vinyl pressing (a 2005 European pressing on beloved German imprint Morr Music).
Some background: Austin, TX indie label Post-Parlo started the Home series in 2000, including short contributions from such varied artists as Kind of Like Spitting, Britt Daniel (Spoon), Bright Eyes, Pavo and Super XX Man. The Gibbard/Kenny installment (originally titled Home Vol. 5) came out during a prolific era for both writers: The American Analog Set had released the classic Know By Heart album in 2001 and followed it in 2003 with the acclaimed Promise of Love, while Gibbard’s profile was rising significantly via the critical and commercial success of The Postal Service’s Give Up and Death Cab’s Transatlanticism
Kenny and Gibbard took a simple approach for their entry into the series, recording on cassette four-track machines in their respective living rooms in New York and Seattle and each performing four exclusive stripped-down tracks (including a cover of one of the other’s songs – Kenny choosing a rendition of Death Cab’s “Line of Best Fit” and Gibbard delivering his version of AmAnSet’s “Choir Vandals”).

• Death Cab for Cutie are everywhere this fall. Not only did they release a recent acclaimed album (Asphalt Meadows) but they've set off on tour for the double-bill Postal Service Give Up / Death Cab for Cutie Transatlanticism tour, celebrating the 20th anniversary of those generation-defining albums. Gibbard is pulling double duty each night of the tour, fronting both bands as they perform these beloved albums front-to-back. As a father and touring musician I made this album to keep my kids company in my absence, hopefully for them to sing along with in their mom’s car. These songs evoke memories of my mother playing her Martin parlor guitar and of my father, at the family turntable, telling stories about Furry Lewis and Gus Cannon or explaining a song’s meaning. I wanted to share these childhood favorites with my kids. This collection of childhood favorites was recorded for fun, at home, with family and friends in the spirit of sharing. Everyone is welcome. I wanted to share these songs with my kids and my friend’s kids as well as expose my daughters to the joy of learning, performing and recording music that my father shared with me. The recording was largely done in 2017 during dinner parties, sleep overs and play dates, either in a family style social setting or while the kids slept. After burning rough mix CDs for the family car, I set the project aside until 2023. Finishing the album with fresh ears album benefitted from my film score work done in 2020 and 21. I love letting projects simmer on the back burner until the time is right. The perspective of time can’t be bought or faked. My daughters sang on the album, both in 2017 and in 2023. Overdubbing my daughters on top of their younger vocals, 6 years later, was a unique sensation and document of their youth. You can hear my youngest daughter sneeze and improvise wordless melodies but my oldest daughter stole the show after her first overdub party, taking me aside and asking ‘don’t you get paid for singing on a record?’ - Luther Dickinson

Two key Scritti Politti albums, 2006’s Mercury Prize-nominated White Bread, Black Beer and Early will both finally be available again on vinyl on Nov 17th after being out of print for several years, and in some places never available at all.
Early brought together a series of formative recordings from the late 70s and early 80s, for an US-only vinyl release in 2005. The collection, accompanied by sleeve notes from Green Gartside, included the band’s debut single “Skank Bloc Bologna”, along with seminal tracks including “The Sweetest Girl”, “27/8/78” and “Lions After Slumber”, and offered a stunning chance to enjoy the long-overlooked musical foundations of Scritti Politti again.
Emerging from the scene around Leeds Art School, with fellow travellers The Mekons and The Gang Of Four, and recorded while the band were residing in a Camden squat organised along Marxist principles, these post-punk rallying cries which prefigured Green & co’s pop-leaning rebirth several years later, were the songs that grabbed the attention of John Peel, Rough Trade founder Geoff Travis and a generation of music fans who helped bring the indie music scene – and the labels that accompanied it – into existence. A musical community in which Scritti Politti played an influential and formative role.
Fittingly, for the release of White Bread, Black Beer, which was a beautiful expression of the creative energy Gartside had sustained over two decades at that point, Scritti Politti returned to Rough Trade for the first time since the mid-1980s.
Humbly described by Green on release as “an album of me playing around in the back room... just me alone at home”, White Bread, Black Beer was universally acclaimed. Described as “a return to the top” by The Guardian, “the best record of this restlessly self-critical career” by Uncut and “a sophisticated, gloriously gentle thing” by Pitchfork, the record was duly nominated for the 2006 Mercury Prize (and was only pipped by Arctic Monkeys’ debut).

With Daniel Bachman’s new album, When the Roses Come Again, he exits the steel string world where he started and tiptoes into a new one, where apparitions and nature inhabit compositions in a musical, genealogical garden.
Self-recorded in the spring of 2023 on a laptop in a cabin that leans against the border of Shenandoah National Park, When the Roses Come Again is culled and composed from a week of 8-hour a day improvisations. Bachman worked as a carpenter’s assistant in this cabin and borrowed it for a makeshift studio. He extended his handywork into repurposing and building his own instruments as tools for this creation. He pulled the frets off an old Hondo banjo, sanding it down, in search of new sounds and learned to build his own Appalachian mouth bow from reading an instructional manual. He cut-andpasted free-form jams into compositions, choosing notes and passages that resonated and connected with himself and each other, sometimes altering their speed and pitch.
But this isn’t an album about living off the land or sustainable solitude. Bachman dug into the dirt of his own musical DNA. On his mother’s side of the family, who lived in the Laurel Highlands of the Alleghany Mountains, were his literal musical descendants, the Hostetler Blind Family Band. A mid-19th century string band, all born blind (including some born without eyes), the Hostetlers performed both original and traditional music on concertina, violins, cello, and dried corncobs for percussion. Bachman doesn’t try to replicate his ancestral past, he does breathe contemporary life into it through its inspiration, using oscillators and drum apps on his phone, as well as fiddle, banjo, and guitar to construct his own string band compositions. All the music was performed, arranged, and mixed entirely by Bachman, except for some of the handbells and harmonium samples played by Tyler Magill (Grand Banks/Carry).
Integrating technology as a tool for collage, as well as acoustic instruments that pre-date all of us, Bachman creates an album that has as much to do with Terry Riley, Laraaji, Eno’s late 70’s ambient albums, and 75 Dollar Bill, as it does the Carter Family, Stanley Brothers, and Hobart Smith. And though this music has an undeniable intensity at times, it grounds the listener in an otherworldly mosaic of memory and experience. “My intention with this record was to represent the spiritual machinery that moves through all life, samsara, the wheel of life, etc. starting with birth, then death, and ending in rebirth,” writes Bachman. “I see this process moving in our garden through the seasons, and through intense personal experiences I’ve had. I see it in the churning of centuries within my own family, and through exploring these intergenerational connections I hope to better understand my own place within these intangible cycles.”
This cycle of life is indicated not just by the textures and sounds of the music but by the compositions’ titles, which originate from the Carter Family’s lyrics to “When the Roses Come Again”, itself a song about life after death. The music remains light and cyclical, re-born as it reverently sings and hums. When the Roses Come Again is an album of not just musical leitmotifs, but re-occurring personal and natural histories that bloom long after their perennial promise is deceased.

The Rise & The Fall is the fth studio album from charged folk-rock trio The Rural Alberta Advantage. “All of our music is rooted in a certain amount of heart and honesty. The songs themselves come from a very earnest place and they are really extensions of who we are. Sometimes we hide those emotions with a lot of noise and sonic energy, while other times we leave them raw and bare. I see our albums more as diary entries, or snapshots in time and this one certainly ts that bill,” says Edenlo .
The Rise & The Fall is a culmination of navigating songwriting through forced zoom meetings, trading les of song ideas over email, managing rehearsals in borrowed warehouses that allowed for more personal space, and proving that the specialness of the band and their songs could only be found with them all together in one room and especially on stage. Getting back to live performances across North America one small tour leg at a time in 2022 gave The RAA back the chance to rework, cancel and perfect these new songs and bring them back home into studios around Toronto for recording with Gavin Gardiner (All Day Coconut). For the rst time, the band focused on writing and recording a few songs at a time, taking their tradition of roadtesting new music to a whole new level of real-time collaboration with their fans. Over the past couple of years, some of the new music has been shared in real time in the form of multiple singles (‘CANDU’, ‘Plague Dogs’) and The Rise EP released in 2022. The Rise & The Fall is the rst full length album from The Rural Alberta Advantage since 2017.

He builds on the romantic themes of his last album 'Signals In My Head' and evolves them with shades of blue, taking very natural sounding experimentation into new moods and musical colour while never making the album inaccessible. Arguably this is a fine successor to the ground broken by DJ Rashad's 'Double Cup' album, which of course Manny also worked on. 'Hypnotized' solidifies Manny's style, from relaxed r'n'b rollers to moments of romantic distress - like 'WTF Goin On' and the reflective 'You N You (ft. DJ Phil)', to more intense moments like the dubstep inflected 'Ooh Baby' from the vaults, co-produced by DJ Rashad himself. Other tracks like 'Want U Bad' retool Robert Hood style minimal techno whereas dark, nervous belters like 'Turn Me Up' sound like Paul Johnson at his most wild but welded to footwork rhythms and a pumping jump up drum & bassline. There are also moments of enjoyably hype daftness like the acid and diva head-fuck of 'Opera' or the old school Bukem style jungle homage 'Lost In Da Jungle'. 'Hypnotized' is an album that expands footwork's template with natural ease and outstanding skill.

H31R (pronounced heir/air) is an experimental electronic hip hop duo composed of New Jersey producer/composer JWords and Brooklyn rapper/vocalist maassai.
Blending together their worlds, new album ‘HeadSpace’ due for release on Friday 17th November via Big Dada, creates an enigmatic but complementary sonic experience that pushes the fickle boundaries of genre. Limited pressing, available on 1LP black vinyl with custom artwork featuring H31R on the cover.
The LP maneuvers through its 14 tracks with blazing speed. “Glitch In Time” sets the tone for the album with gritty bass, groovy drums and quirky melodies resonating throughout. It contains moments of introspection and self-reflection on songs like “Static” and “Reflection” while the edifying diptych of “Rotation” – an oscillating track capturing the essence of dark and light – and “All Over The Place”, which transcends duality and expands to a multidimensional self, signify markers of growth. Elsewhere is “Backwards” which, despite its name, is a propulsive track that seeks to move forward from things holding someone back, and “Train of Thought”, that examines the mechanisms of thinking, starting off more concrete before gradually becoming abstract by the song’s end.

6 80341 06004 0There was always something sexy about Purgatory. No one wants to hang out in Hell, but was Heaven ever really that appealing, either? How does that Talking Heads song go? “Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens…” Close to Paradise is one of those rare gems of an album that can stand as a gateway to wherever you want it to take you.
On the one hand it’s impossible to ignore PATRICK WATSON as a classic singer-songwriter; the charming young piano-player with the haunting voice. The big impact of an otherwise simple song like “The Great Escape” is a testament to the attention that Patrick’s voice, delivery and sensibility command. Just try and avoid vocal comparisons to Jeff Buckley on “Luscious Life” (inflected with just a bit of Sufjan Stevens-like orchestration), or the penetrating stripped-down gospel of “Bright Shiny Lights”. In some ways Close to Paradise is the coming-out party for one of Canada’s most exciting young vocalists.
But on the other hand, Close to Paradise also features three other incredibly strong musicians just beginning to enter their prime, both in terms of skill and contributing song ideas. Robbie Kuster might be the best drummer in Montreal, and between him and Mishka Stein on bass, the band has the ability to bolt from dreamy ballad to all out intricate rock assault and back again without blinking an eye. Simon Angell is among that rare breed of guitarist that can do more with one subtle and well-timed chord as others can with a whole song of throw-away notes. He can stand and slay with the best of them, but it’s when he’s patiently seated and kneeling at his arsenal of effects pedals that you’ve really got to be on your guard. Consider that Kuster co-wrote the ethereal electronics of “Daydreamer”, that Stein laid the foundation to “Luscious Life” (arguably the album’s most accessible moment of pop assault), and that Angell adds songwriting to his banjo credit on the apocalyptic dustbowl of “The Storm”, and it’s clear that we’re dealing with a two-headed monster – at least. Close to Paradise is also a serious trip of a record by as tight a four piece band as you’ll find.
Recorded in part by both Jace Lasek at Montreal’s Breakglass Studios and Jean Massicotte at Master Cuts, the album also features guest appearances by two of Montreal’s most exciting up-and-coming female vocalists: Land of Talk’s Liz Powell, and country sweetheart sensation Katie Moore. Even electronic guru Amon Tobin adds a few touches.
Maybe most importantly, in age of records as mp3 cookie-cutter compilations, Close to Paradise is actually an album. Make no mistake, there are pop gems that are happy to stand on their own like “Giver” or “Drifters”, but “Bright Shiny Lights” is that much more uplifting after you take the trip that is “Sleeping Beauty”. Records used to do that kind of thing. They still can. You know, if you want them to."

Wooden A rms is Patrick Watson ’s follow-up to the critically acclaimed Close to Paradise, which vaulted the man and his band to international stardom in 2007. The Montreal band toured non-stop for two years following initial Canadian release of Close to Paradise in 2006, and in many ways Wooden Arms is the story and sound of a band waking up in strange places all around the world.
Whether it’s the bicycle-city sound of “Beijing,” or the warmth of “a hole in the wall” in “sweet New Orleans” on “Big Bird in a Small Cage,” or the haunting European waltz of the title track, you can’t help but feel in listening to Wooden Arms like you’re on the road with the band. Sometimes it’s dirty, sometimes it’s wild, but it’s never, ever boring.
When the dust had settled the band had written enough songs on the road to lay down a new record in a few short months at the end of 2008 in Montreal. On the album’s opener, “Fireweed,” Watson sings, “So we dug ourselves a hole, and planted all our skin; like a seed in the ground, to grow again.” And you can hear stripped down rejuvenation all over Wooden Arms; Watson’s voice and orchestrations shine brighter against a rhythmic percussive foundation that has been brought to the forefront.
But Wooden Arms isn’t just the sound of a band learning how to build a slicker wall of sound together. The playful album closer “Machinery of the Heavens” is almost a full on swing-tune; “Big Bird in a Small Cage” proves they’re capable of producing a perfect country-pop song, and fans of “The Great Escape” from Close to Paradise will have a hard-time resisting the heart-wrenching just-voice-and-guitar of “Man of Like You.”
Perhaps most importantly though, Wooden Arms showcases both Watson and his bandmates as genuine composers, and the serious musicians that they are – from the orchestral pull of “Tracy’s Waters,” to Simon Angell’s noisetwang on “Traveling Salesman” to drummer Robbie Kuster’s jaw-dropping performances and his string piece “Hommage,” to the anchor of Mishka Stein’s bass on the instrumental freak-out number, “Down at the Beach.”

Babydoll is the fifth Rat Columns album and, following 2021’s Pacific Kiss, the second to be released on Tough Love. The recordings took place in Perth, Western Australia, partially by engineer Jason Hayles in a 1960's office building that formerly housed the secretarial pool of a successful mattress company, and partially by DW in an industrial unit, and feature the ensemble cast of Taylah McLean, Chris Grunwaldt, Scott Payne, Richard Ingham, Cohen Bourgault and, of course, DW himself. It was then mixed and mastered in Melbourne by Mikey Young and Joseph Carra, respectively
Babydoll seems to mark a return to a murkier, dirgier Rat Columns format. Distortion is fetishized again and many small amplifiers were tortured in the album's production. Tempos have drifted down and the lyrical concerns move ever inward, in an inverse bloom. The mood is dour, introspective, circular, the songs long, and short attention spans are neglected.
'Cerulean Blue' churns through a crystalline memoryscape, homaging low-brow grunge auto-fiction and a partial history of mid-period rave. 'Life In The Jungle' is a fever dream of imperialist wartime fantasy projection. 'Heavenly Assault' attempts a crushing density amid visions of transcendent devotion. 'Virtual Sweden' takes us ever northwards into the frosted tip of Scandinavian détente. 'Babydoll', like 'Cerulean Blue', homages a primarily imagined low-cosmopolitan world of alt-lit digipoets, bedroom fantasists, underwater prisons for gorgeous, gorgeous girls. 'Bees Make Honey' lets more sophisticated music machines into the conversation, and marks the first use of vocal tuning software on a Rat Columns album, albeit in an avant-amateurist fashion. 'Jane, I Live For You' enters the space-ballad race, dreaming of synthetic folk-rockers, leaning on sampler keybeds in the halflight. 'December' is yet another tribute to fallen Stars, mansions on the hill, winter skin in cashmere sweaters, truth in education, love, faith, (im)purity. In all these respects, it is a classic Rat Columns record. Because all Rat Columns records are classic records.

In West Africa, where the only water you can find is in the Ocean, Stanley Brinks & Freschard put on their best carnival costumes to get to the bottom of every bottle of rum they could find. They found a lot. Iron Eye is an irresistibly charming collection of late night tales, woozy ballads and uptempo sing-alongs. Clemence Freschard’s beautiful vocal tones lend this a rich, French indiepop/chanteuse vibe, complemented by Stan’s wistful timbre and characteristic warm instrumentation. tanley Brinks is renowned for his unique anti-folk style: both playful and suggestive, insightful and entertaining. Brinks was born in Paris, France, in 1973. He studied a bit of biology and worked as a nurse for a while. Half Swedish, half Moroccan, strongly inclined to travel the world, he soon began spending most of his life on the road and developed a strong relationship with New York. By the late 90s he’d become a full time singer-songwriter – André Herman Düne – as part of three piece indie-rock band, Herman Düne alongside his brother, David-Ivar. Several albums and Peel sessions later and after a decade of touring Europe, mostly with American songwriters such as Jeffrey Lewis, Calvin Johnson and early Arcade Fire he settled in Berlin. The early carnival music of Trinidad became a passion, and in the early 21st century he became the unquestioned master of European calypso, changing his name to Stanley Brinks. Under this moniker he has recorded well in excess of 100 albums, collaborated with the New York Antifolk scene on numerous occasions, recorded and toured with traditional Norwegian musicians, and played a lot with The Wave Pictures.
