Redeye Label of the Month Q&A
Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own?
How did you personally get started in the music industry?
Well if you want my work history… A&R at Atlantic and London records, the Lemonheads and Meat Puppets - I recommend Google.
What really got me started was my father’s 78’s and my record player. And what really got the label started was the ethos of Di schord and the distribution of Touch and Go, the words of Joseph Bueys and let’s be real, the financial help from my grandmother.
When and where did the label begin?
1992 New York City
What is the meaning behind the name for the label? Speaks for itself.
How has the label changed since it started?
In every way but the below: We are still a 50% profit share with our artists, we still only do single LP record agreements, meaning our artists choose to return, and we still do not care what anyone thinks.
Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. We are all music nerds or people who spend too much money on records, too much time at shows, and too much time looking for records. There is always a record playing in our offices. Founded by a woman, Thrill Jockey has a staff of 7 spread between our Berlin and Chicago offices.
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? We focus entirely on the good shit.
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?
In 1992 we wanted to release records that made us happy- that compel and inspire us. We want to realize our bands’ artistic vision and advocate for their position.
In 2022 we want to release records that make us happy- that com pel and inspire us. We want to realize our bands’ artistic vision and advocate for their position.
So far so good.
What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released?
We love LPs that sound good- we also like stuff that looks cool.
How would you describe the average fan of the label?
Not remotely average, always entirely unique.
Ummm… I will let you decide. I was a member of an underground Chicago art movement called the Anti Proficiency League- less practice more concepts. If you dared to join the movement you were issued a deed for intellectual property. I played accordion in the Rash who played one show at the Empty Bottle and recorded a record in 35 minutes with John McEntire and Sam Prekop, it was terribly fun- they could not stop laughing.
After that triumph I ventured out solo- well, I was the only human with The Pope and Pony show (myself, my dog lead vocals and my accordion). We played one show with Galatian de Beuf and I got all the money while my dog got all the attention.
In hindsight, one might say that I peaked when I started in NYC in Salmon Skin. I played drums (and I use that term very generously) with them when we opened for the Dust Devils. We even had some fresh merch made by dipping a piece of salmon in paint and slap ping it on our shirts.
How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?
We put our efforts behind personal and environmental causes that are important to both our bands and ourselves. We do not separate the label from ourselves. We do not hold back on our politics.
In your opinion, how important is it to be environmental ly sustainable within the music industry these days?
It is very important and nearly impossible if we are honest. We have raised money for many environmental organizations and consciously commit to best personal practices, but as a company we cannot ignore that LPs are a petroleum product. There is no way around it- and they are heavy and bulky to ship. It is not a very green business, unless you are all digital. So, we love the earth and do what we can to offset our records, but the truth is, if I’m being brutally honest: we love the Earth, but not as much as we love records. I suppose as physical sales decline we get greener… always look on the bright side of life (insert your own whistle now).
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the mu sic industry from when you first started compared to now?
I really try not to think about the Music Industry. We prefer to focus on the art of music.
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered?
In that context, all I can think of is “remembered” by whom? We are just grateful for all the stores that remember to order our new releases, and both support and share records that make us happy to be alive.

It is our pleasure to present "Where is the Magic?" b/w "The Rainbow and More" - the latest 45 from local favorites and newest members of the Wick Records stable of stars, the incomparable, Brower! Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing Brower live knows that they put on a great show. But so often is the case with great live bands that the recordings lack a certain je ne sais quoi. Luckily for us Brower delivers on and off the stage. Like a newly discovered lovechild of Big Star and The Raspberries "Where is the Magic?" serves up a sonic smorgasbord of tasty riffs, saccharine melodies, swinging groove and swagger that sounds like it was pulled from a lost session at Ardent. "The Rainbow and More" is a mind-expanding exercise in power-pop perfection: deft storytelling, crazy hooks, dueling leads, heavy drums, harmonies for days, it's all here! A truly remarkable piece of art.

This release will be the band’s first reissue after Mood Valiant, from which the band reached their highest album sales to date on a release as well as the highest chart positions thus far including a top five entry on the Australian ARIA chart at #4, as well as numerous Billboard chart positions & debuts across Billboard Top 200, Emerging Artists, Heatseekers, Top Album Sales, and much more.

OVERVIEW
To celebrate the 5th anniversary of its release, we are pressing a limited edition of this stunning debut album on white vinyl.
The music of Cigarettes After Sex invokes not only the powerful feelings of euphoria inherent in the band’s name itself, but somehow manages to recreate emotions found in the most romantic of movies; immersive, achingly nostalgic, thoroughly transporting, and intensely visual. It’s these powerful and unique qualities which have enabled the love songs of Cigarettes After Sex to reverberate across countless countries, and excite the most devoted kind of following.
After the phenomenal online break-out success of “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby” the singer, guitarist, and creator of Cigarettes After Sex, Greg Gonzalez, wanted to project his worldview onto a bigger screen, a broader canvas. Yet Gonzalez rejected conventional studio routes for his band, which includes Randy Miller on bass and Jacob Tomsky on drums. They recorded their self-titled debut album during a remarkably short, three-day stint at a modest pay-by-the-hour rehearsal space in Brooklyn. It’s this bottled intensity, and perfect cohesion between musical landscape
lyrics, which keeps listeners, falling in and out of love themselves, thoroughly enraptured, returning to the music again and again; the love songs of Cigarettes After Sex the indelible soundtrack.

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of this indie-rock classic, Barsuk Records and Nada Surf are pleased to release a limited-edition turquoise vinyl pressing of Let Go – limited to 1,000 copies worldwide
Heralded by the music press and beloved by fans around the world, Let Go is a perennial best-indie-rock-albums list-maker, recognized for rejuvenating the band's career after an awkward parting with their initial label, Elektra.
“Getting dropped after our second record was kind of a blessing. We all of sudden had all this time to be back in our normal lives,” says Matthew Caws. “There was just enough going with the band to justify not figuring out what the next step in life should be, what other career I should try and figure out. I didn't make myself go to grad school or anything. I worked at the local record store, went to shows, messed around with home recording, buying and selling a couple of used 4-tracks and then 8-tracks, trying different set-ups. I lived in a rent-controlled apartment in Williamsburg that was directly above a fruit and vegetable shop. The building I lived in was falling apart. The wind blew right through the walls. I had ice inside my windows in winter. I could make a little noise without bothering anyone. I bought a toy drum kit. It was kind of like making a first album all over again. We didn't have the sense that anyone was watching, we were back in a vacuum. That was very freeing.”

Limited to 1,000 copies worldwide, this powder blue 7-inch vinyl also includes the first physical release of Charly Bliss’ cover of that time-honored Mariah Carey earworm “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”
“Our managers have been trying to get us to write a Christmas song for years and we’ve never followed through,” said Charly Bliss’ lead-singer and guitarist Eva Hendricks in December of 2020. “We decided that enlisting our friends in PUP would at least make it fun. We never imagined we’d be so proud and absolutely thrilled as we are by the results. We tried to write a song that reflects the absolute insanity of this year and the fact that everyone in the world is stuck missing someone this holiday season and probably feeling a similar combination of emo, angsty and vulnerable!”
“I was so excited when Charly Bliss asked me to write a Christmas song with them,” recalled PUP’s Stefan Babcock. “I don’t know if I’d be able to write a Christmas song under normal circumstances, but since Christmas is shit this year, seemed like it was right in my wheelhouse! Plus Charly Bliss are an amazing band and amazing people, so it was a no-brainer. If we’re judging it alongside other Christmas songs, I think we smashed it.”

John
the hit single,
The Id released a ground-breaking concept psychedelic album in 1967… or was it one of the first of many prefab, made-in-Hollywood psych-exploit LPs? The Id was a garage band made up of turned on, hopped up California hippie types who were way ahead of their time, or were they well-seasoned, multi-talented studio and performing musicians? Paul Arnold conceived The Id, composed and scored every single note and told the band exactly what to play and how to play it. Or did the band write about half of the material? The Id came and went with a lot of questions about who they were, why they were and why they weren’t.
What we have here, in addition to the weird-as-all-get-out original LP, is a bonus LP bearing a largely instrumental take on the album that really brings the rhythm section to the forefront. We were very pleased to be able to work on these tracks with bassist Glenn Cass, as the bass really comes through on these Alternate Sounds. One of the first things Glenn told us upon hearing this altered vision of the Id record was how sad he was that Don Dexter was not here to enjoy it with us.
It took over 50 years for Glenn to hear these alternates, as the tapes were thought to be lost for some time. These newly discovered unheard alternate takes shed light on the amazing instrumental dynamics that went into the making of the original LP. As if it were cosmically summoning us, The Id found its way back to the future and we can now begin to finally solve one of rock & roll’s great cult mysteries.
Like Glenn Cass, let’s just kick back, tune in, turn on, and let this new twist on a 50 year old favorite melt our minds!

‘There is no Acid in this House’ is Hieroglyphic Being’s third solo album on Soul Jazz Records, a resolute and powerful statement of Jamal Moss’s raw, vital, pioneering, Afro Futurist electronic (dance) music.
On his new album Moss once again draws upon the vast scope of experimentation that has defined Chicago’s musical universe over the last half a century from the b irth of house music with the pioneers Ron Hardy, Marshall Jefferson, Lil Louis and others to the radical avant garde jazz legacy of the city, The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, The Art Ensemble of Chicago and Sun Ra.
Chicago’s musical universe continues to push further forward today with artists such as Hieroglyphic Being, Angel Bat Dawid, Makaya McCraven, and labels such as International Anthem label and Hieroglyphic Being’s own Mathematics, all continuing to explore radical new music while drawing upon the city’s decidedly Afro futurist lineage.
Jamal Moss, aka Hieroglyphic Being, remains at all times a radical one off musical explorer, a resolute pioneer of an avant garde dance music aesthetic taking lineage from the founding fathers of acid house such as Ron Hardy and Adonis, and pushing the musical form to its own limits, adding his own harder almost industrial edge to this unique sound, which Moss sometimes describes as ‘Outsider House’ or, referencing the earlier avant garde musical resident and pioneer, Sun Ra ‘Rhythmic Cubism’ and ‘Cosmic Be Bop’.
Hieroglyphic Being’s music crosses many boundaries and has led to remixes of a wide and diverse list of artists from St Vincent to Hans Joachim Roedelius (the pioneering German electronic composer and member of Cluster), King Gizzard and the Lizard Gizzard to Adonis and many more. In similar fashion his music has appeared on Ghostly/Spectral, Warp, Ninja, Axis and his own Mathematics Recordings.
Jamal Moss first began working with Soul Jazz Records in 2015 and has released two solo albums (‘The Acid Documents’ in 2015, ‘ The Red Notes’ in 2018) as well as a third album under the guise of Africans with Mainframes (with Nolan Reusse in 2017).

ALI McGUIRK
With new album Til It’s Gone, Ali McGuirk delivers a sublime set of songs that pairs her trademark soul sound with rootsy turns and raw rock ‘n’ roll detours. McGuirk coproduced Til It’s Gone with Jonah Tolchin (a star singer-songwriter in his own right) and a set of session legends: Little Feat guitarist/ mandolinist Fred Tackett, organist Larry Goldings (James Taylor, Norah Jones), singer Valerie Pinkston (Ray Charles, Luther Vandross), percussionist Lenny Castro (Stevie Nicks, Stevie Wonder). They provided the astounding chops, but the true magic of the album comes from McGuirk’s singular voice as both singer and songwriter. The nine tracks run from intimate introspection to wider meditations on oppression and justice, from tough r&b and tender soul to big rock guitar and twangy folk. Each song succeeds because McGuirk has composed a dynamic, hypnotic frame for her vocals.
Selene
Juna
Roanoke seamlessly blend a 70s aesthetic with modern sensibility by delving into a mystic rock core. For 8 years, these elements have persisted in their music, evolving as the band has risen through the ranks of the independent rock scene. Mysticism is a primary component to the band’s foundation and not only in their lyrical themes - the band’s live shows bring their spirituality and mysticism all to fruition. Roanoke has grown into a road-tested outfit, retaining an affinity for raising energy and rich vocal harmony. Their live shows have won over audiences since the band first started touring 6 years ago.
Roanoke is fronted by Taylor Dupuis (vocals/acoustic/songwriter) and Joey Beesley (vocals/electric guitar/songwriter). Richard Bennett is on bass, Chris Elvidge on drums, and B.L. Reed on electric guitar. On their latest project, the band teamed up with producers Richard Bennett and Kevin Robinson at Bless Yr Heart in Muscle Shoals.
“Selene” is the band’s latest single, releasing across all digital platforms March 17th. 7” vinyl will be available for pre-order, backed with “Juna”.
Dupuis says, “‘Selene’ is a song about the moon goddess, who represents women everywhere. She is strong, and nurturing, loving, wild, and fierce. I started thinking about the parallels between the moon, and women, and thus became ‘Selene.’ For this song we wanted to sonically call back to the music of the 70’s and early 80’s, while also adding some more modern sounds to create something familiar yet nostalgic. Our intention for ‘Selene’ was to write something that felt magickal, mystical, powerful, and relatable. We want to take listeners to a whole other world.”
For the single’s music video, Roanoke teamed up with the creative director Cybelle Elena to create something unique, captivating, and powerful. The video features Dupuis portraying influential women of history - Queen Elizabeth, Joan of Arc, Amelia Earhart, Gloria Steinem, the Hollywood actress, the folk singer, and of course, Selene. Each of these women’s stories is one of triumph and strength. Each character is represented by a tarot card, which will be part of a deck the band will be releasing in collaboration with Cybelle. The video is a dreamy, mystical, 80’s inspired world, featuring strong, captivating women of history, who dealt with some of the same struggles women deal with today.

That ol’ spirit and image of SF has meant a lot of things loved and lost over the past couple centuries but the most recent golden age is still cooling in the hearts and minds of many nu music enthusiasts, god bless ’em! In truth, it’s already hardened into fact and myth or in the case of this fantabulous GOD? release, into retrospective compilation, with the far-flung fascinations of the Folding Cassettes label repping the time and place for our dew-eyed purposes.
Folding Cassettes yup, a cassette label was pretty much done and sorted when the new era of peak cassette improbably broke wide in the early twenty-teens. Back in 2001, when founded by Mike Donovan, it was more representative of the exclusive confines of the urban underground, well represented as always around the Bay area. Mike had been jitterbugging through the scene for several years, playing with this group and that, starting a label and releasing some ACTUAL LPs and CDs (to no avail) — and with notoriety fronting Sic Alps still several years hence, he had the time and energy to reach out and tap the shoulder of his fave local talents, not to mention leg ends, resulting in a sequence of dozens of delightfully EFFED SF-ite releases on Folding Cassettes.
The gambit? Run. The various musics curated included everything from lo-fi to free-form to metal (so far as rock was concerned), with further genre distinctions including abstract electronics, laptop noise,
contempo-jazz-fusion, country-folk and even comedy, all of it delivered with a highly demanding, archly punk sensibility. The players? Hailing from names you might recognize today members of OCS (multiple ones!), Gang Gang Dance, Child Abuse, Krallice, Lightning Bolt and Comets on Fire, all of them getting down with the freedom and some truly head-cleaning sounds. Plus Kit Clayton (as himself)! Mikey Wild ! A slice of (the now-defunct style of (now impossible)) anonymous crank call comedy! And even a little num ber from curator Mike D. himself! All burned into vinyl for the first time literally EVER.
Wanna know more? You can. Sit with the LP, and while it’s literally pounding your skull and hooking into your cochlea, dig the back cover. Old-school! The liner notes there unpack whats, whos and wheres for us, bringing other aspects of The Way It Was in those DIY days back into visceral life in all their manually-type written glory. No details skimped! Personal memoir touched upon! And of course, a discographical list of all 44 Folding Cassettes releases, including the unreleased Tits2 single (FC CEO, what are the odds of finally getting that one out there?!).
Folding Cassettes Greatest Hits is a wild night on the old town and an earful that’s awful too one of the bravest, most inTENSE records you’re gonna hear this year — or what the hell, next year and last year too.

Morning Flight
Vinyl
The mid-20s musician from the surf-side community of San Clemente CA who is also an art/design & photography enthusiast basically likes "anything that makes noise!"
Along with a stunning assortment of musicians from the vibrant So Cal music scene, Ryan has crafted the shared sonic experience that is ‘MORNING FLIGHT’ featuring 70s-style singer/songwriter jams with soul grooves and surf soundtrack atmospheres. Hunkered down "until the money ran out" at LA's analog hot-spot studio Palomino Sound, ‘MORNING FLIGHT’ resulted from the Ryans' time between San Clemente and El Sereno in Los Angeles.
Produced alongside Jason Soda, the two dudes worked in the studio putting on the finishing touches to the sessions of a close-knit group of gifted players from Howlin Rain, Mapache, Grateful Shred, and GospelbeacH. The friends put a glow on Ryan's songs with a wide range of mood and textures. Choral beach-folk, surf, sunsets, sunrises, and dance floor souled-up funk songs along with jammy subtleties and a sense of camaraderie propel the songs.
‘Morning Flight’ is the first record numbered (CURED001) from the Curation catalog. It represents the California Curated Cool aesthetic just as well as any record on the label...not in the sense that we are "cooler" than you but in the cool vibes of harmony, community & togetherness that MORNING FLIGHT brings. JJ Golden oversaw the remastering and cutting for vinyl at Golden Mastering from the original 2019 tapes.
Influences are as diverse as the sonics. Ryan reflects "I think for this record. I was heavy into singer/songwriter stuff from the early 70s but at the same time (and always) heavily into soul/dance/funk music: Bobby Womack, Sly Stone (my god), and Gil Scott Heron. LA country from the 60s/70s was HUGE. Byrds, Poco, Neil Young, Crosby, Parsons, all the standards on that front. NRPS….(SF scene) kind of was a student of a lot of different tastes around the time of this record" There's also a heavy nod to the "Baggy" scene from Northern UK in the 90s Stone Roses, Primals, Happy Mondays, Verve which all through the veins of a 24-year-old surfer come out in one glorious piece of vinyl...take the MORNING FLIGHT

The members of Uni Boys have been careening towards greatness in some form or another since they were 15. Like a generation (or two) of power pop bands before them, Uni Boys took their small town restlessness and moved to L.A. with a cache of songs that manifested angst into the kind of earworms that refuse to let go. Quickly cementing a sound that’s more indebted to the roots of power pop than the storied genre itself, Reza Matin, Noah Nash, Arthur Fitch and Michael Cipolletti churn post glam stomp and punk’s bite into a record wrought with winking charisma. Rising up from their formative Bowie, Roxy, and VU hangovers, and fed well on deep-dive YouTube rabbit holes packed with lost ‘70s b-sides, they’ve funneled this fodder into an album of tip-of-the-tongue moments that shakes rock’s ravaged soul awake once more. The band’s early works caught the ear of Brent Rademaker (Beachwood Sparks, GospelbeacH) whose Curation Records initially approached the Boys about a pair of reissues — seeking to revive their first two albums, Rock n’ Roll Music and Heavy Hearted
With a firmer grasp on the sound they were channeling early on, the band that recorded Do It All Next Week feels baptized in the backroom of Bomp! Records, shaking out their pelvic pulse with bottles of Yellow Pills. The band’s Reza Matin recorded the album in his apartment, ditching their old Tascam for GarageBand and then meticulously mixing it until any wafts of modern technology were whittled away. Like a lost teen b-movie soundtrack to Summer, the band boils the preening, soft punk pout of the L.A. power pop underground into a new generation of singles ready to populate the crates for future diggers. Do It All Next Week is a timeless testament to pining and pacing — songs of love that should have been, songs of love that went sour, songs of love waiting on the dance floor moments from now. Over the past few years the band’s caught the ear of more than just Curation, heading up opening slots for certified power pop godfathers, Flamin’ Groovies, SoCal legends Allah Lahs, and rock n’ roll royalty, The Black Crowes. Do It All
locked on repeat.

OVERVIEW:
Padang Moonrise is the story of the mid-century, modern Indonesian music industry that emerged underneath the volcanoes of Java and Sumatra. Java, (the most populous island in the archipelago of over 17,000 islands and 1300 distinct ethnic groups) and its capital city Jakarta, was where the majority of post-colonial national identity, political strategy, governmental administration and music production was centered. Traditional songs from Java, Sumatra, Bali and beyond were re-imagined by a small group of state-sponsored musicians that also composed and arranged new music. These songs aimed at consolidating a geographically disparate country with a new language and new ideas of national character. This compilation brings together a handful of these recordings that combine elements of regional popular music, Islamic Gambus, Javanese & Balinese Gamelan and Kroncong, with jazz, afro-latin
& instrumentation, and vocal harmonies influenced by banned American doo-wop and rock & roll records. The results are a unique blend of styles that have remained mostly insulated from the world outside of Indonesia, until a recent worldwide resurgence in the interest of recorded music of all forms has shone a new light on these nearly forgotten recordings.

The nine songs that comprise You Become The Mountain are heavily inspired by the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, meditation, long-distance running and Silverstein’s work as a special education teacher.
Expanding on the minimalist approach heard on How on Earth, Silverstein invited pedal-steelist Barry Walker Jr. (North Americans, Rose City Band) and bassist Alex Chapman (Parson Redheads, Evan Thomas Way) to round-out an increasingly meditative sound.
Led by the spirit of late Detroit musician Ted Lucas, Silverstein was moved to
instrumental and lyric-based compositions. Silverstein casts a wide net in 40 minutes, offering fans of both

WHITE LUNG PREMONITION
It’s been over five years since White Lung released any new material. After their explosive break-out album in 2014, Deep Fantasy, and the critically-acclaimed follow-up, Paradise, the punk band have taken a long yet unintentional hiatus. Now, singer Mish Barber-Way, guitarist Kenneth William, and drummer Anne-Marie Vassiliou are back with their latest release, Premonition
The band returned to their long-time producer Jesse Gander (Japandroids, Brutus) to bring out the primal and anthemic punk rock the band built their following on. Chaotic, bold, and hook-driven, Premonition is a whirlwind of driving drums, intricate guitar work, and no-holds-barred lyrics about motherhood, pregnancy, and growth.
• White Lung’s final record - their most mature and powerful record yet - arriving after six years of silence from the band.
• The long awaited follow up to 2016's highly acclaimed Paradise, named in year end best of lists from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Stereogum, The A.V. Club, Consequence, and NME.

RICHARD DAWSON THE RUBY CORD
embrace the wonders (and horrors) of augmented reality and
Richard
returns with his new album The Ruby
Ruby Cord is the final part of a trilogy that started with the pre-medieval world of 2017 's Peasant,
back to the present day with 2019's 2020 and - possibly - concludes in the future
Dawson’s seventh studio album. After recent collaborations with Finnish metal innovators Circle and his work with Hen Ogledd, this is a return to Dawson’s own world with seven tracks that plunge us into an unreal, fantastical and at times sinister future where social mores have mutated, ethical and physical boundaries have evaporated… a place where you no longer need to engage with anyone but yourself and your own imagination.
While 2020 dealt in social realism with explorations of testy football matches, the fallacy of work-life balance and therapeutic forms of repetitive exercise, The Ruby Cord shakes off the limitations of socalled real life and delves headlong into a (sort of) sci-fi world where human society has collapsed and morphed into something distinctly less solid. “So many of us are moving into these fantasy worlds,” says Dawson. “Whether it's actual constructed virtual realities, computer worlds, or retreating into even more fantastical realms…. conspiracy theories, nationalism, amateur football punditry. People construct their own world because this one is so flawed.”
Despite its futuristic setting, Dawson is still tackling contemporary issues - in this near-future, the fantasy world that some people live in looks incredibly like Old England or mythic Albion. But what happens if there’s a glitch in this virtual world that turns a pastoral scene into one of dread? Dawson explains further whilst indicating some of the inspirations behind the album: “Like when you play video games, sometimes something glitches and it makes something happen that’s really bizarre and disturbing.”
As with Peasant and 2020, The Ruby Cord was recorded with Pigs x7’s Sam Grant at Blank Studios in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and the mantra that emerged with “The Hermit” was “what happens if we push on a bit further?”. Joined by regular collaborators Rhodri Davies, Angharad Davies, and drummer Andrew Cheetham the answer to the question is: possibly Dawson’s best songwriting yet.
PRAISE FOR RICHARD DAWSON
"Nobody writes about humanity—our hopes and dreams, obsessions and follies—quite like Richard Dawson."
Pitchfork (Richard Dawson & Circle's Henki)
"The disjunctive melodies of the British avant-garde troubadour Richard Dawson are like Captain Beefheart reborn as a pastoral folky.”
The New York Times ( 2020)
“Socially aware, beautifully played, dazzlingly well-crafted, and, most importantly, exceptionally moving”
Under The Radar ( 2020)
• Richard Dawson's 2017 studio album Peasant was critically acclaimed: Quietus ' #1 Album of the Year, The Wire's #2 Album of the Year, Crack Magazine's #9 Album of the Year, The Guardian's #10 Album of the Year, Mojo's #20 Album of the Year.
• Non-commercial and college radio servicing to impact on album release.
• Standard LP includes download card. LP (ltd) is a double blue vinyl pressing.
Barbarism was written, performed, produced, and mixed entirely by Katie Alice Greer. It is profoundly singular, a graphic vision held completely by its individual perspective. It’s also a boundless and lush record, teeming with bluffs, charms, and jolts. In Greer’s words, “making this record felt like I was making an entire world.” This world is unnerving, loud. It evokes the bustle and momentum of a cartoon factory, orchestral gears threatening to grab your sleeve and yank you into a grinding embrace. Sometimes the accumulation of sound feels like a weapon in Greer’s hands, other times it’s a malevolent, drowning force she’s fighting against. In both cases, it’s fortunate that Greer has developed such command of her voice: to breeze atop this roar; to attack it in kind; to grow so crisply vulnerable that the song, shamed, twists itself into beauty.
Greer carefully sculpted each gesture on the record, contorting jangling guitars, sibilant hi-hats, even her own voice into thorny, unrecognizable corridors of sound. The creation of “How Do I Know (Pring 5)” provides a helpful example of this painstaking, gratifying process: “The wobbly guitar chord strums are me playing an acoustic through some tremolo,” explained Greer, “overprocessing it through a lot of filters. The original ‘beat’ of the song was a clip of a voice memo I recorded, where I turned it up really loud and looped the ‘bump’ sound over and over.” Greer likens this approach to the ripping, recontextualizing, gluing/ungluing process of collage. This technique reaches an extreme on the song “No Man,” which includes a substantial excerpt from Dorothy Lasky’s poem, “Porn.” Greer described
HARDEST WORKING MAN IN SHOWBIZ LIKE YOU NEVER HEARD HIM BEFORE!
James Brown, the “Godfather of Soul,” was a prolific singer, songwriter and bandleader, as well as one of the most iconic figures in funk and soul music. James Brown worked his way to the top of the funk and R&B music earning the moniker “The Godfather of Soul.” His unique vocal and musical style influenced many artists. Brown was also known for his social activism, both in his songwriting (“America is My Home,” “Black and Proud”) and advocating the benefits of education to schoolchildren. In addition to writing and recording music, Brown toured relentlessly. He performed five or six nights a week throughout the 1950s and ‘60s, a schedule that earned him the title “The Hardest-Working Man in Show Business.” Brown was a flashy showman, incredible dancer, and soulful singer, and his concerts were hypnotizing displays of exuberance and passion that left audiences in raptures. His saxophonist, Pee Wee Ellis, once said, “When you heard James Brown was coming to town, you stopped what you were doing and started saving your money.”

A lot has happened to SUSS since their last vinyl release, 2020’s Promise on Northern Spy Records. That album ended up on many best-of lists that year, and was cited as a peerless country/ambient hybrid. As the album’s title indicated, the music spoke to a future of promise, with the band looking toward new musical horizons.
However, that promise was cut short with the onset of the pandemic and the loss of founding member Gary Leib, who passed away in 2021 soon after the completion of the Night Suite EP, a dark, late-night trip through the heart of loss set against the backdrop of Americana soundscapes. After the difficult decision to move ahead as a trio, SUSS began planning a series of connected EPs that would culminate in a double-album release representing the natural evolution of the band as it struck out in a new direction.
The next EP release, Heat Haze, was a feverish search for fractured dreams in a hot, shimmering landscape, followed by Winter Was Hard, which finds SUSS moving away from the arid atmospherics of the American Southwest and entering chillier dimensions exploring the challenge of surviving uncertain times.
To complete their four-part odyssey, SUSS is now releasing these three EPs, together with the last leg of the trip, Across the Horizon, as a double vinyl set simply titled SUSS. Taken as a whole, this work represents how wide the scope of ambient country music can be while also showing the journey of personal change that the band has undertaken over the last couple of years — the loss, the searching, the challenge, and, finally, the new hope on the horizon.

BRIGHTNESS
The second album from Brisbane Meanjin indie folk five piece Full Power Happy Hour builds on the immense promise of their 2021 self titled debut, adding a gorgeous tinge of alt country elegance to their inherent feel good jangle pop foundations. This musical bed assembled collaboratively allowing the band’s true spirit to shine through proves the perfect foil for frontperson Alex Campbell’s compellingly personal lyrics documenting a tumultuous period in their life, an at times fraught journey recast into beautiful, eloquent art. The 10 songs veer from bright, upbeat toe tappers to plaintive, introspective
due to the group’s underlying camaraderie and fast blossoming
like The Go Betweens and The Clean, with flourishes of Lucinda Williams
At
contemporaries like Big Thief and The Weather Station, Bit of Brightness is 100%
one utterly beguiling aural experience.

Cry Perfume by Sadie Dupuis
Release Date:
2, 2022
“Cry Perfume is a bouquet of delights, especially rich in the moments where a reader can be a joyful audience to the way Sadie Dupuis makes language malleable, playful, bends it towards the hidden sounds tucked within. This is a book of immense pleasure, and I am so thankful for it."
"Sadie’s poems have all day long sustain. Musical meters and flows cut with DIY realness—it’s so fresh and I’m really into it!”

Sadie Dupuis is the guitarist, songwriter & singer of rock band Speedy Ortiz, as well as the producer & multi-instrumentalist behind pop project Sad13. Sadie heads the record label Wax Nine, edits its poetry journal, and has written for outlets including Spin, Nylon, and Tape Op. She holds an MFA in poetry from UMass Amherst, where she also taught writing. Mouthguard, her first book, was published in 2018 (Gramma, Black Ocean); Cry Perfume is her second collection. She is an organizer with the Union of Musicians & Allied Workers and its local UMAW Philly.
Cry Perfume is an imperative: bottle sorrow in a beautiful vessel, and shed the chemicals that cloud your sight. Written over a four year period on tour after losing loved ones and peers to overdose, Dupuis funneled complicated grief into writing about the glamorized toxicities often inherent in entertainment. The slick performativity of pop, punk humor, electronic glitch and sampling, and the surprising leaps of improvisation influence these poems, but music is muddled with larger concerns about justice and organizing. Cry Perfume is a hopeful but realistic inventory of the virtues and evils that emerge when arts and tech collide. Those dualities are cloaked in sparkling fragrance, and there are twinned pleasures and regrets in parting the smokescreen.

What we have here are home and field recordings of The dB’s. Most of these tracks pre-date the release of Stands For DeciBels by two to three years and were the basis of the signing of the band to Albion Records (UK) in 1980. Some songs are being released to the public for the first time in this package.
Now, almost 30 years after a number of these tracks saw the light of day on Rhino Records, we find ourselves in the position of releasing the earliest of these selections from our archives to a whole new audience. It’s the first time most have been on vinyl.
The
were found after months of Chris [Stamey] sifting through a trove of ancient cassettes, and we are glad to be able to include these key songs from those early years.
On July 13, 2006 the Drive-By Truckers set up shop at Plan 9 Records in Richmond, VA. It was the 25th Anniversary of the store. The band performed to a packed house and played a blistering set of fan-favorites featuring the songs, “18 Wheels of Love”, “Let There Be Rock”, “Goddamn Lonely Love” and “Daddy’s Cup.” The performance was also set up to benefit the Bryan and Kathryn Harvey Family Memorial Endowment. The foundation provides, among other things,
