FORGET NEW YEARS EVE! START YOUR FELABRATION NOW WITH THESE RELEASES... AFRODISIAC 50TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION This double LP edition is on color vinyl; LP 1 is green marble and LP 2 is on red marble. The LP is wrapped in a gold foil OBI. The songs on Afrodisiac were tracks that Fela and the Nigeria 70 (Later Africa 70) re-recorded at Abbey Road Studios in 1972 after they had become hits in Nigeria. The best known song on the album, ‘Jeun Ko Ku’, is listed by its Pidgin title ‘Chop and Quench.’ It’s a satire about gluttony and Fela’s first major hit across West Africa.
GENTLEMAN 50TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION This edition is pressed on Igbo Smoke(clear and grey) and the LP is wrapped in a gold foil OBI. Like Fela’s other early 70’s releases, he uses each side of his LPs to create a deep groove that pulls the listener in and follows with metaphoric lyrics that call out and critique the corrupt hangover of colonialism. Featuring the title track and ‘Fefe Naa Efe’ and ‘Igbe.’
SHAKARA 50TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION This edition is pressed on pink vinyl and the LP is wrapped in a gold foil obi. It also includes a bonus 7" of the two album tracks, ‘Lady’ and ‘Shakara,’ remixed by Mercury Prize winning Jazz ensemble Ezra Collective. This album is the sound of Afrobeat’s maturation as a global music. Fela’s Pidgin English lyrics extend his music’s audience beyond Yoruba speakers and make his words understandable across the Anglophone world.

Description / Bio: Flying Wig is an album of recurrent dualities; a can of paradoxes, a box of worms. The redwood and pine-surrounded cabin studio where Banhart was “constantly listening to The Grateful Dead” somehow birthed something slick, modernist, city pop-adjacent and Eno-esque. Banhart’s eleventh record, it’s the actualisation of a “precious friendship” with the acclaimed solo artist, multi-instrumentalist, producer and Mexican Summer stable-mate Cate Le Bon — a coming together prophesied by the mirror-image titles of their early solo albums (Banhart’s 2002 Oh Me Oh My to Le Bon’s 2009 Me Oh My) and a tenderness built on crude haircuts (“we finally met, soon after she was cutting my hair with a fork and that was that”) and home-made tattoos — but never previously translated into the recording studio.

OVERVIEW In 1974, with the release of Second Time Round, Cymande solidified their place in music history. As children of the Windrush Generation, they were part of the first wave of innovators and originators of the fledgling Black British music scene. Taking influences from their Guyanese and Jamaican roots, the band fused reggae bass lines, Afro-tinged Nyabinghi percussion, psychedelic rock touches, and American style funk instrumentation into a unique sound they dubbed as “Nyah-rock.” Second Time Around was the follow up to their self titled debut and firmly planted the band in the ears of an adoring US audience. Cymande’s Cymande was the first UK soul album to land on the Billboard charts, and Second Time Round placed them back on the US charts again. They were also the first British band to ever play the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem. Cymande’s massive influence can be heard in the dozens and dozens of samples taken from their albums over the last five decades, from pioneering DJs like DJ Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash, to De La Soul, The Wu-Tang Clan, Gang Starr, The Coup, Sugar Hill Gang, Norman Cook/Fatboy Slim and The Fugees -- to name just a few. They stand today as one of the most revered and sampled bands to have ever cropped up across the history of Hip Hop, House, and Dance music. Today the band continues to reach new audiences. In addition to the reissue of Cymande Cymande in 2022, the band toured the US, EU and UK, and headlined at SXSW alongside their incredible documentary premiere: Getting It Back: The Story of Cymande. Overview Partisan Records and the estate of DJ Rashad have partnered on this Double Cup reissue to celebrate and honor the 10 year anniversary since the release of this seminal record. In some ways, Double Cup is Rashad’s debut album, but in more significant ways, it represents a lifetime of incubating a remarkable branch of Chicago house music. In a cruel twist of fate, Double Cup is also a testament to how much creative juice we lost when Rashad died tragically on April 26, 2014 Released originally in 2013, it ended up on year-end lists from Pitchfork, The Guardian, Dazed, Resident Advisor, Crack Magazine, The Wire and Complex, as well as decade lists from Pitchfork, Noisey and SPIN. Rolling Stone described it as “somehow both weightless and brutally powerful” while Pitchfork said it was “unquestionably the strongest footworkrelated LP” and NME called the album “unprecedented”. The Double Cup reissue will be pressed on limited edition gold vinyl and includes new artwork created by Teklife visual artist Ashes57. Those who know, know, but for those new to DJ Rashad and Footwork music it is the grandchild of House, the child of Ghetto House and the older cousin of Drill. The music features high BPM tempos infused with complex sampling and heavy driving bass beats. It started in Chicago clubs in the ’90’s and grew into a global scene around the success of DJ Rashad and the Teklife collective.

Big Thief ’s music, rooted in the songs of Adrianne Lenker, paints in vivid tones “the process of harnessing pain, loss, and love, while simultaneously letting go, looking into your own eyes through someone else’s, and being okay with the inevitability of death,” says Adrianne. Masterpiece, Big Thief ’s debut album, is filled with characters and visceral narratives, songs that pivot in the space of a few words. Adrianne’s voice and guitar playing speak of rich emotional territory with grace and insight. In her words, the record tracks “the masterpiece of existence, which is always folding into itself, people attempting to connect, to both shake themselves awake and to shake off the numbness of certain points in their life. The interpretations might be impressionistic or surrealistic, but they’re grounded in simple things.” Adrianne met longtime musical partner, guitarist and singer, Buck Meek, in Brooklyn, and they quickly formed a creative bond tempered by the experience of traveling and performing for months on end in old dive bars, yards, barns, and basements together. They recorded a pair of duo albums (A-Sides and B-Sides), and Adrianne showcased her songs on a solo album, Hours Were The Birds.

Jackie Mittoo is one of the most important artists in the history of Jamaican music. As founding member of the legendary Skatalites, as in-house arranger/producer at Studio One and as a solo artist in his own right leading groups such as The Soul Brothers, Sound Dimension and Soul Vendors. These classic and rare recordings were made in the mid-1960s at Studio One. The Soul Brothers bridged the gap between Ska and the arrival of Rocksteady mixing it all up with Funk, Jazz and Latin styles. The Soul Brothers recorded at Studio One between 1965-1967, the transitionary period between Ska and Rocksteady where the music was a mixture of Funk, Latin and Jazz sometimes with a reminder of Ska and the hint of Rocksteady. The Soul Brothers were born in 1965 out of the ashes of the great Skatalites. The new group featured ex-Skatalites members Jackie Mittoo, Roland Alphonso, Johnny Moore and Lloyd Brevitt). By the end of the year the group were up and running, releasing countless addictively catchy singles and two albums as well as becoming the new house band at Studio One, following the demise of The Skatalites. Chicago rock ensemble Red Red Meat hit hard with 1995’s Bunny Gets Paid. Arguably the band’s most complete album, the record pairs Stones-indebted blues-rock roots with beautiful songs, sounding miles removed from the era’s grunge and radio-friendly alternative rock tropes. Recorded at Idful Studios in Chicago’s Wicker Park by producer Brad Wood (Smashing Pumpkins, Liz Phair, Tortoise), Bunny Gets Paid finds Red Red Meat’s core members, Tim Rutilli, Brian Deck, Ben Massarella, and Tim Hurley, straddling the line between their most accessible set of songs and a desire to explore a kind of “alternate fidelity,” employing layers of distortion, natural reverb, and room ambience. “At the time, I felt like we’d made a classic rock record,” Rutilli says. “I was like, ‘This is our Astral Weeks.’” But listening back 20 years later, Rutilli recognizes the band’s ambition, a desire to break songs down to their barest, most primitive elements to “see what survives.” “I think it was about testing the melody, how strong a melody was,” Rutilli says. “It was loving pop music and classic rock songs, but also loving noise…the slow burn of actual sound.”

The record features some of Red Red Meat’s best-loved songs. Opener “Carpet of Horses” pulses with restrained energy under a pastoral shuffle, while “Chain Chain Chain” imagines RRM as a pop act, with crashing drum fills and a surging chorus. “Gauze” sits in the middle of the record, a gorgeous droning ballad with languid guitars that give way to the band’s most anthemic chorus. The record closes with a reading of “There’s Always Tomorrow,” as featured in the Rankin/Bass Christmas special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and the song fits magically and without irony, a downcast but hopeful sentiment.

Layered synth drones bleed across minimal beats while interlocking, slow-building melodies slither, simmer and percolate around each other. If you’ve ever watched David Lynch’s classic 2001 film Mulholland Dr., you might just recognize the title of Pærish’s third full-length, You’re In Both Dreams (And You’re Scared). It’s a line spoken by one of the two men having a conversation in that movie’s incongruous diner scene. Pærish vocalist/guitarist Mathias Court was watching the film for maybe the tenth time last year, and that line stood out to him like it never had before. “I was having a very rough year,” he says, “and watching that scene really made me think about how my life was divided into two things. I was trying to live for the music, but at the same time have a good job. I ended up burning out. So I was struck by that line because it really felt that that’s what was going on in my life. So watching the movie again kind of decided the name of the album for me.” Given that Pærish was formed when Court was at film school with bassist Martin Dupraz, it’s little surprise that the band—now completed by guitarist Frédéric Wah and drummer Loic Fouquet—would use a cinematic reference for its title. After all, the first two records were peppered with them, and many of their songs started life by Court fiddling with his guitar while watching something in the hopes that he’d capture or channel the emotion of whatever was on the screen. This time around, the title is the only thing directly inspired by the moving image. Whereas on 2016’s Semi Finalists and 2021’s Fixed It All, Court would utilize other people’s art to draw parallels to how he was feeling, this time it was purely his own internal wranglings that influenced his songwriting.
At the heart of that was an uncertainty about the band itself. Unable to tour Fixed It All because of the pandemic, Court wondered if being in a band was worth it. They’d recorded that album with their dream producer, Will Yip, in Philadelphia, but what should have been cause for celebration was anything but. “A year after recording Fixed It All, I still didn’t know when it was going to come out,” Court says, “and I just started writing sadder songs. It was actually very comforting to write when you had like two full months of doing nothing, and I started writing like I never had before.” By December 2021, Court had demoed the whole album. Almost a year later, Pærish flew to Philadelphia to record it with Will Yip. The band’s familiarity with the producer, plus the fact he and Fouquet hit it off instantly, lends a natural confidence to this album that disproves the very insecurities that inspired it. In fact, it turned into the album Pærish have always wanted to make. “When I listen to these songs,” says Court, “I almost don’t realize this is our album. I feel like we got even closer to our final form. This is the one we’ve been wanting since we were kids. Limited to 1000 copies. Not far off two years from the day, Bristol's Tara Clerkin Trio return to World of Echo and the EP format for a five song collection of quixotic, emotional redolence. But do not mistake their absence for inertia. If their musical output has been a little sparse during those in-between years, limited to a few solo ventures and an astonishing ten minute long piece as a trio, their time has otherwise been richly spent: continuous writing and recording, extensive live performances across Europe and Japan, a cultivation of local and more far-flung artistic connections (musical and otherwise), and a monthly NTS show that, through the voice of others, speaks most obviously to their own unorthodox interests. It's the conflux of that winding activity that leads indirectly to On The Turning Ground, 26 minutes of probing, thoughtful composition that draws from no one specific source. Their inspirations might be centreless, but the trio still possess a very obvious anchor in the form of their hometown. Bristol stands as a city of multitudes, heterogenous and vibrant in such a way as to allow it to renew and remake time and again. Tara Clerkin Trio drink from that same well, duly reflecting a rich musical heritage built on fwdfacing electronic subcultures and experimental urges. As such, On The Turning Ground finds them subject to their own subtle internal evolution, the pervasive sense that you've caught them mid-bloom, on their way to becoming but never anything but themselves. The two instrumental pieces that bookend the EP stand as a perfect case in point, displaying an increasing mastery of compositional space. Pensive and restrained, 'Brigstow' and 'Once Around' both emanate an interstitial quality that's not so much after- as in-between-hours, miniature dub-folk symphonies held together by the kind of tacit understanding that remains the preserve of only the closest of family units. If those two tracks are shaped by a sense of shifting temporality, then the three vocal-led pieces that comprise the record's core feel like a gentle ossifying of aesthetic into something approaching their own unique form of avant-pop. 'Pop' is, of course, a broadly subjective concept, but there's no avoiding the overt sparkling melodicism of songs like 'Marble Walls' and 'The Turning Ground', undeniable re-directions of that late 90s impulse to bend pop sensibilities into off-centre terrain, to render the familiar new again. This is what Tara Clerkin Trio do, gently pulling the ground from under your feet, turning you to face something you'd not quite seen before. Influences: Edgar Varese, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Delia Derbyshire, John Cage, Kraftwerk, Todd Rundgren, Pere Ubu, Throbbing Gristle, The Normal, Human League, Suicide, Tuxedomoon. Pioneers of the Los Angeles underground art damage electronic music scene, Grey Factor have been more myth than legend for over 40 years. The band recorded two experimental synth / post-punk EPs, made one riotous appearance on the influential cable tv show New Wave Theater and gigged sparingly before disbanding. None of their recordings have been officially released in physical format until now. In 1978 Jeff Jacquin, Joey Cevetello, Jon Pospisil, and Paul Fontana formulated the blueprint for their minimalist synth-based sound. Using what would today be considered a goldmine of vintage electronic equipment, they recorded The Perils of Popularity EP at Eldorado Recording Studios with a young engineer named Dave Jerden (prior to his work with Talking Heads and Byrne / Eno). The EP was dubbed onto cassettes and distributed at one of the 20-odd gigs Grey Factor played at legendary L.A. punk venues like Madame Wong’s, The Hong Kong Café, and The Masque. Word spread quickly, and the “too cool to care” underground were soon cramming their way in to view this new phenomenon. In 1980, Paul Fontana left the band and was replaced by Anne Burns and Joey’s brother, John Cevetello, to create The Feel of Passion EP. The synthesizer and drum machine setup of the first EP was expanded to include guitar and bass, female vocals and saxophone. After a confrontational performance on the groundbreaking, influential and first-of-its-kind cable TV show New Wave Theater, Grey Factor called it quits, the members deciding that there was just nothing else left to do. 19791980 A.D. - Complete Studio Recordings includes Grey Factor’s two studio Eps remastered from the original analogue tapes and pressed on limited edition vinyl with a 16-page color booklet including archival photos, documents and flyers chronicling the band’s brief existence. It marks the launch of Damaged Disco, the new label founded by producer / musician Dave Trumfio (Pulsars, Mekons) and and handled by Tiny Global Productions. That’s what Teenage Halloween do through soaring arrangements of melodic angst, wracked vocals that insist “I love you so much I would die for you,” and passion-packed two-minute dispatches tackling topics from gender euphoria, to state abuses, and an eternal quest for mental well-being. The results are potent punk vistas that document young queer life at the edge of America. America Having been unable to tour the album on its release in pre-vaccine times, the band hit the road with abandon in late 2021 and beyond, notching nearly 150 shows on their belts; including their first national US tour, an invitation to showcase at SXSW, and dates with Algernon Cadwallader, Chris Farren, Good Riddance, Say Anything and many more. These shows invariably deliver a calling card of unrelenting energy, wry wit, and warmth. In February 2023, the group headed into Headroom Studios in Philadelphia, PA, under the guiding hand of producer Joe Reinhart (Hop Along, Beach Bunny, Joyce Manor), and tracked the 13 dispatches on isolation, uncertainty, and hope for better days, that make up Till You Return. The quartet maintains the vital energy of their previous incarnations but brings an even more focused punch to the arrangements that leaves greater room for Henderiks’ lyrics.

Portland, Maine indie rock trio Weakened Friends dive into the honest truth of being a working musician on their new LP, Quitter, reflecting on lost friendships and self-worth swallowed up by burnout. Songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist Sonia Sturino is supported by Annie Hoffman (bass/vocals) and Adam Hand (drums), filling out a mature and emotive sound. Though the record acknowledges a perpetual state of arrested development that comes with being a musician, the band is anything but stagnant musically. Opening themselves up to ideas outside the constraints of their slacker rock sound, Weakened Friends puts the full force of their creative ambition into “Quitter”. Inspired by watching peers go above and beyond what is expected of them, the band sought to explore each song’s fullest potential, with their most extensive pre-production and arrangement work to date. In the wake of Young Marble Giants’ breakup, two acts were created, with Stuart Moxham taking minimalist, geometric play to extremes while Alison Statton added more warmth and feeling to a similar template, creating something stunning yet based in popular forms. Those two opposing means of forging paths away from one of music’s most astonishingly unique debuts both included Stuart’s brother, Phil. More recently, both have reversed course, with Stuart proving himself a master of classic pop form, with Alison’s work again approaching a modern abstraction of quiet folk music experimental but accessible. But that’s another tale. With no template to guide him, Stuart’s new music - as The Gist - was regarded as wildly uneven. Stuart admits that he didn’t know which way to go, so perversely, he decided to take all directions at once. The Gist’s original discography stood at a scant 18 songs, yet only seven featured Stuart’s own voice, often in heavily processed and oddlymixed form. The Gist’s label, Rough Trade, dropped the band. Starting with a critical re-evaluation of The Gist’s sole album Embrace The Herd in an issue of Mojo, the tide begin to turn. Ambience in pop has long enjoyed a cult following, and the nonlinear structure of many of The Gist’s songs have parallels with artists such as Aphex Twin and Seefeel. One song from the era was covered by Etienne Daho in France - sounding rather advanced for French pop at the time, it ended up selling over a million copies and was later covered by Lush and sampled by DJ Koze with Lambchop singer / songwriter Kurt Wagner. Recent discovery of a trove of unreleased recordings show that Stuart had held back an array of excellent material, in demo and completed forms, often in different arrangements. Interior Windows adds 13 new performances or alternate versions to the band’s catalogue, and does the service of making both sides of The Gist’s first 7” 45 (recorded at the same session as the final YMG single) available again, along with their contribution to the NME / Rough Trade cassette compilation C81, and in keeping with The Gist’s tradition, at least one song on which Stuart does not appear. As soon as Spike discovered punk, he wasted no time forming Reptile Ranch (Wales’ own Scritti Politti), starting a label (Z Block), and releasing the compilation of the Cardiff scene, Is The War Over? After an act dropped out of the cooperatively-funded venture, Spike approached the disbanded Young Marble Giants to contribute a track or two. Bemused, they agreed to reform, and it wasn’t long before Rough Trade rang the public phone listed on the back cover of the LP to poach the combo, leading to an album which hit immediately and has inspired hundreds of artists since. All the while, Spike worked with Debbie Pritchard in a number of unheard bands - but that’s another tale. After YMG’s breakup, singer Alison Statton started Weekend with Spike and Simon Booth, a project which saw chart success and the birth of a nouveau-retro style as individualistic as YMG’s, one later co-opted by lesser acts. Weekend, too, split after their debut album. Despite Weekend having become Alison’s second big act, Rough Trade passed on her next project with Spike. Vinyl Japan stepped in to release the duo’s debut, Tidal Blues and other releases followed, but as real life, jobs, and children beckoned, both Alison and Spike stepped away from music . . for more than twenty years. Their return is both unexpected. Bimini Twist is the work of the two alone. Apart from some vocal tracking in a local studio to best capture Alison’s still wondrous voice - everything was recorded in their homes, much of it ‘live’, and these new songs show the duo’s charm and diversity, featuring Alison’s most personal lyrics and Spike’s peculiar musical genius. New re-press. Much has been written about Young Marble Giants’ perfect catalogue, roughly two-dozen songs, each a perfect gem. Less is known about his long wilderness years after the break-up of Stuart Moxham's first professional band. His next project, The Gist, chopped YMG’s minimalism into a new shapes. This Is Love, Public Girls and Fool For A Valentine maintained the geometric precision of YMG, but the album’s fragmented pieces were a step too far for many, though the strangest of them, Carnival Headache, when cast in sunlight by Alison Statton’s combo Weekend, was clearly as fine a song as any he’d written and Love At First Sight became a million-seller in France as covered by Etienne Daho. And now The Devil Laughs is a compelling addition to the canon of the modern songwriting. Stuart’s generally unadorned musical presentation does not hinder his appreciation for the skills of Louis Philippe, whose iconic arrangements across an array of Él label albums inspire fierce devotion from aficionados around the world. Nor does the unvarnished solidity of Stuart’s arrangements deter Louis from hearing possibilities for their presentation in styles which take inspiration from the perfection of 1960’s studio technology that led to the rise of Brian Wilson, Burt Bacharach, alongside less-recognised names such as Bones Howe and Roy Halee. Tidy Away is Young Marble Giants redux, though the backing vocals hint at maturity which band didn’t live to see. Fighting To Lose would have been a worthy b-side to Bridge Over Troubled Water, and although the songs are Stuart’s, Louis fans will delight at Love Hangover and Sky Over Water, which display his style and production genius as succinctly as his own work. The Devil Laughs is as out of its time as Colossal Youth was - its subtle but immediate beauty, devoid of “rock”, is a recording best understood in the light of those obscure groundbreakers who inspired it - the faux barbershop vocals of Smile-era Beach Boys, the studio lustre of Tom Wilson’s work with Simon & Garfunkel, a dash of The Swingle Sisters and French chanson - along with hints of Young Marble Giants. It's a small masterpiece of pure expression. Andy Sharrocks – Country Rock ‘n’ Roll and Durty Blues
Roach Records / Ozit Vinyl 3LP OZITROACHRR3LP 12/15/23 5063176008619 Andy Sharrocks started writing songs in 1976. He found a vehicle for these songs with punk band Accident On The East Lancs. This started out as a covers band, but Andy soon became frustrated when the other members wanted to stay that way. The band disintegrated but Andy retained the name, forming a new cutting edge four piece playing his songs. He financed their first single in 1979 on his own label Roach Records. This was a double A side as one of the sides was a ditty called We Want It Legalised. The other side was a Bo Diddly kind of groove called Tell Me What Ya Mean, which Record Collector magazine recently said sounded like a song The Strokes should cover. This line up fell apart when immediate success failed to arrive, but Andy formed another band out of the ashes of local band Wilful Damage, and the guitarist out of the original covers band. They recorded and released on Roach Records another double A sided single in 1981 as well as an album released on cassette tape on Cargo Records. The singles now exchange hands on the collectors market for over seventy pounds, the album has been rereleased on vinyl twice, once on a German label, and once on UK’s OZIT/MORPHEUS Records which came with a bonus live album The singles have been released on many punk compilations and We Want It Legalised is about to be released on a new Manchester punk compilation on Cherry Red Records. They played many free festivals including Deeply Vale three times, and did many great supports including The Fall, Tractor, Here And Now and Crass. Andy left the band in 1982 for personal reasons, and had a one single deal with I Believe In Love on the Vibes and Vibes record label in 1985. Refusing to compromise and do covers, Andy found it impossible to make a living doing his own material which was now primarily Americana, after discovering alt.country through Steve Earle and Lyle Lovett in 1985. He went on the road as a tour manager, which is where he met Hilly Briggs, who went on to produce Andy’s first solo album in 2004 called Walking In Familiar Footsteps, which featured ex Rolling Stones Guitarist Mick Taylor, Bluesband and Manfreds frontman Paul Jones and Bobby Vee’s sons Jeff and Tommy on drums and bass respectively. Andy was now living in London and was gigging regularly on his own or with a revolving circle of musicians going under the collective title of Andy Sharrocks & The Smokin’ Jackets. He played over five hundred gigs all over London and the UK. He also did many supports for Mick Taylor, Buddy Whittington, Steve Gibbons, The Strawbs, Curved Air, and supported John Mayall on a UK nationwide tour, and played the Jazz Café in Camden twice with John. He also played The Hells Angels Bulldog Bash three times, The Skegness Rock n Blues Festival, The Herelbeke Blues festival in Belgium and The Colne Blues Festival. In 2009 he released another album called Dirt with The Smokin’ Jackets, which came out to great critical acclaim. Andy is now releasing a triple album of truly magnificent UK Americana, called Country Rock n Roll n Durty Blues. Steven Adams, formerly of The Broken Family Band releases new album DROPS. Since calling time on TBFB at the height of their success, Adams has released half a dozen albums under various names (Singing Adams, Steven James Adams, Steven Adams & The French Drops), his witty, incisive lyrics and melodic sensibilities taking in DIY indie rock, folky introspection, and off-kilter pop hooks. Originally from South Wales, Adams now lives in East London. DROPS is the first album to be credited to him as a solo artist since 2016’s Old Magick, and his noisiest record to date. Armed with a new batch of material, he began by upping sticks to the Welsh countryside to experiment with drummer Daniel Fordham and bassist David Stewart - both formerly of psych oddballs The Drink. The trio then took the songs to Big Jelly, a converted chapel on the south coast, with co-producer Simon Trought (Comet Gain, Johnny Flynn, The Wave Pictures) to lay down the basic tracks for DROPS. Eschewing a full band set, recording sessions in East London followed with Laurie Earle (Absentee) on guitar and Michael Wood (Hayman Kupa Band, Michaelmas) on keyboards. Adams then took the recordings home and to the French countryside, to work alone. The result is a dynamic and spirited collection of songs, with Adams's love of 90/00s US underground rock (Pavement's Bob Nastanovich is a fan) to the fore. DROPS is a sonically compelling piece of work: from bleak/exultant opener Out to Sea and motorik Living in the Local Void to the weirdly funereal Fascists, and Day Trip's psychedelia in miniature. There are also moments of tenderness: the avalanche of empathy on closing track Cheap Wine Sad Face, and I Tried to Keep it Light’s “worse things could happen… I don’t know how, but give me time.” Tracklist: 1.
