When and where did the label begin?
The label was started by my friend Bob Irwin and his wife Mary, out of their house in Cox sackie, NY in 1989. First release was a Knickerbockers album.
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
Bob and Mary came up with it essentially by putting words together that they liked. 30 years later Mary told me she regretted it because of all the times she’s had to say “No, not Sundays, Sunda zed.” Bob and I chose Modern Harmonic. It was his idea really, taken from an old music book on modern harmonic musical theory. I think it was the first idea we both loved so it stuck.
How has the label changed since it started?
While staying true to its roots as an archival music label, we’ve kept Sundazed (as an imprint) true to form largely focused on psych, surf, & sixties, but have worked to generate other brands following the Sundazed blueprint, like Modern Harmonic which is sort of Sundazed’s eccentric sibling with jazz, avant garde and just plain weird stuff, BeatRocket focused largely on garage, Americana Anthropology, and most recently Dot Matrix focused on treasures from the more recent past.
What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? Trying to accurately project demand. Early on demand went through the roof so our manu facturing quantities went up, then by the time the titles came back from production things had leveled out. We adjusted, then it changed, we’re just trying to get the numbers right and trying to make sure that we’re only sending titles to production that are worthy of the precious capacity that’s available. We feel like we’ve got the handle on it, but ask us again in a few months.
Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?
Not necessarily. We’re US based and do all of our manufacturing in the US (jackets in Canada) trying to keep our carbon footprint as small as a vinyl based label can be. We’re even manufacturing close to Redeye now to help that and give the records less time in a hot truck. We love to dabble in other territories though, most recently doing a couple titles from Autour de Lucie (on our Dot Matrix label) who’re from France. We explored making some of the albums there but at this point have kept it all with one plant.
Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about?
We always like to say that we find the best stuff while we’re looking for something else. We try to be aggregators and love to get suggestions from fans, friends, stores, other artists, it’s a little bit of everywhere. Mind you most of the ideas that come in are things that haven’t been reissued for a reason or carry some sort of major hurdle. We’re far from the smartest folks in the room, we just try to be the best listeners when the ideas come… then we search them out and often find something else. If you just live in it you swim in it.
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
I think (and to a certain extent hope) that when folks think of Sundazed they immediately think surf, psych, & sitars, but we hope to mix it as we try to earn that same level of brand loyalty to Americana Anthropology, Dot Matrix, BeatRocket, and Modern Harmonic. How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?
I think our goal remains the same, have fun and help others have fun by filling holes in our collective collections, whether it’s providing an affordable version of a record that most can’t afford an original of or unearthing something special like our Id or Colin Blunstone bonus albums that we didn’t even know we needed until we knew they existed.
We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? I’ll actually answer it honestly. While they’re all special, our work with outsider artist Jerry Solomon has been really special to us. He sends us thank you notes for every check he re ceives. It’s way out there stuff so no one’s getting rich off of it but it’s the big titles that allow us to be art dealers and turn people onto his music. Getting checks to artists and estates is one of my favorite things. A career personal highlight that made us zero money was helping Jill Costanzo (daughter of Jack “Mr. Bongo” Costanzo) get a $70k check from Universal for royalties she wasn’t aware of. But they’re all fun, we’re just lucky to be doing what we do and when we do it well it’s great to make others happy.
What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release? A front runner would be having Wayne Coyne in my kitchen filling hollow records with real blood from a syringe. Two great quotes came from it: 1) Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros will be Fedexing their blood to your house. 2) (while injecting some Coldplay blood into a record) “Wow, even Chis Martin’s blood has cheese in it.” This was when I was working for a pressing plant who refused to let Wayne fill these there.
If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outside-the-box” or “cross over” marketing campaign?
I’d love to get an electronics company to start making affordable consumer quarter inch tape machines again and start getting our catalog out on reel to reel. They don’t warp, they don’t scratch, no bent corners, and they sound amazing. I’d love to help launch the reel resurgence. Or maybe start making records on corn based plastics. It was explored before but that indus try realized there was more money to be made focusing on cosmetics containers. But maybe one day. I’ll settle for making Bob Irwin’s dream of a comp called Close But No Tequila a reality. A comp of about 40 minutes of ripoffs of the song “Tequila” (but omit the original). Then we’d put an ad for Petrón or Casamigos on the back and make them pay for it. Sorry, I have trouble thinking “big budget.”
What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released?
Thank you for asking! As a guy who spent almost 10 years working at a pressing plant, I feel black vinyl and color vinyl sound the same (when done right) but if you had to make a case for one I’d say color vinyl sounds better because having one solid (non-mixed) color is about the only way to guarantee that the material is virgin material. The black vinyl almost always contains regrind (and should) but if you get a single color record, they’d almost always have to use 100% virgin material as it’s next to impossible to regrind colors separately (aka prevent cross contamination). That’s why plants do randomly mixed vinyl and things of that nature to get rid of the color regrind. Other than that, the modern compounds are pretty much identical.
One of my favorite packages we’ve done, while simple and subtle, was our Moon Express package. It was printed on the reverse board with a diecut window which only went through one layer of the jacket. We printed on both sides of the jacket so the contents of that window was the inside and had the glossier sheen. It’s hard to explain but very cool and unique. It’s also an amazing record especially if you like sitar. We’ve got some deluxe Sun Ra plans in the works for our reissue of the film Space Is The Place LP + film and the early plans are delight fully absurd!
Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs??
Yes! We never really left the CD. Generally speaking if we’re not doing CD on a title it’s be cause it’s a licensed title and we don’t have the rights to. People always reach out saying they wish we had, though. Bring on the reel to reel boom!!! (said with sarcasm free sincerity… would love that).
How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?
I think they’re very important. I’m not sure we’ve had many releases that focus solely on mental health but as a medicated individual it’s a very important topic and society needs to remove the stigma that makes people embarrassed to say they’re on meds. No one gets shamed for blood pressure medication, they shouldn’t get shamed for taking antidepres sants, anti-psychotics, hormones, whatever. If something makes someone get through their day and be happier in the process we should all celebrate that those things exist.
Social justice is super important to us. We’re really proud of our Nikki Giovani releases and to even be associated with someone like her who’s done so much and continues to be a powerful voice of change. Personally, as an archivist, I’m a huge fan of the Gil Scott Heron, Last Poets, and Sarah Webster Fabio’s of the world. Love a socially powerful album that gives you the chills. Nikki does that and we’re always looking for powerful music with a powerful message.
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
Oh that’s a tough one. Back in my day, we weren’t on email and we used to have to send mar keting wrap-ups via voicemail group codes. I remember when PolyGram started the push to use email one executive fought it because he couldn’t listen to his emails on the way home. I remember making flyers with a gluestick, a sheet of “mini’s” and a copier, almost com puter-free. As it relates to our business, I’d say it’s the the amount of reissues now and the amount of reissue labels. Everyone has one or is looking to start one. It’s great but strange.
Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance:
I love them all, nothing like collecting logo shirts from all over the country/globe. One that will always come to mind is Euclid Records in St. Louis. I remember my first interaction with them was over email as a consumer. I was shocked they had a record in stock on their site and asked if it was true (Va Va Voom by Cinerama) they confirmed it and we had pleasant email conversations that lead to them sending me a free tote bag. That meant a lot and kept me going back.
When I finally got to visit St. Louis (not their current location), I was offered to see the basement. I was amazed. It was like a whole other record store and more impressively they had every used record they had logged into inventory. So I rattled off a couple titles I’d already checked to see if they had in the bins and they punched them up and sure enough he had a second pressing of Louvin Brothers Satan Is Real and a minty copy of Sinatra’s Swingin’ Sessions. They were records at the time I’d never held and now I had them. I spent so much money that day. He also had a knack for traveling for collections rather than waiting to see what came in. But I love record stores. I wouldn’t be who I am without them. They’re my happy place.
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered? Fun, irreverent, and well curated.

On July 13, 2006 the Drive-By Truckers set up shop at Plan 9 Records in Richmond, VA. It was the 25th Anniversary of the store. The band performed to a packed house and played a blistering set of fan-favorites featuring the songs, “18 Wheels of Love”, “Let There Be Rock”, “Goddamn Lonely Love” and “Daddy’s Cup.” The performance was also set up to benefit the Bryan and Kathryn Harvey Family Memorial Endowment. The foundation provides, among other things, music scholarships in the Richmond area. Lead vocalist and songwriter, Patterson Hood ended up writing the song “Two Daughters and A Beautiful Wife” about Bryan Harvey and his family.

BAUHAUS
TheSky’sGoneOut BurningFromTheInside
Formed in 1978, The legendary and hugely influential Bauhaus is comprised of Peter Murphy, Daniel Ash, David J and Kevin Haskins. The dark, dramatic mu sic that they made, possessed far more force, variety and playfulness than the “founding fathers of goth” tag that is always attached to them.
Bauhaus’ landmark debut album, In the Flat Field, came out towards the end of 4AD’s first eventful year. Following the plan at the time, the band then “moved upstairs” to Beggars Banquet, for whom they cut three further albums before dissolving in 1983. They charted with their cover of David Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust”, and they’ve been name checked by everyone from Nine Inch Nails, Sep ultura, Janes Addiction, MGMT, Interpol, Bjork, Nirvana and more. They remain a huge cult concern, periodically reforming to wow their legions of dedicated followers.
The Sky’s Gone Out is the band’s third album and was released in 1982. It was mastered from HD audio files transferred from the original tapes.

Some of the greatest artists in the 20th century have been multi-instrumentalists – cue Prince, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Todd Rundgren and Paul McCartney. That expansive understanding of composition, technique and sound changes how artists approach musicians has inspired Leland Whitty’s approach on his new record Anyhow. BADBADNOTGOOD’s Leland Whitty has also worked with artists including Charlotte Day Wilson, Kali Uchis, Kendrick Lamar, Ghostface Killah, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Earl Sweatshirt, and Kaytranada.
Whitty’s current solo project is a departure from the improvisation focused collaborative band that has made his name. Anyhow began in 2020 after Whitty had finished working on several film score projects including Disappearance at Clifton Hill (Albert Shin) and Learn to Swim (Thyrone Tommy). That focus on narrative fed into his own work, which combined elements of cinematic composition with jazz and rock like he has created in the past.
His latest album Anyhow features Whitty on guitar, synthesizer, woodwinds, production, composition and strings. Narrative is built into each of Whitty’s tracks in some way. Rather than a specific story, he drew from photographic or cinematic sources. The aim was for the production and arrangement to imply the kind of structural narrative found in jazz improvisation. Whitty’s compositions emerged from voice notes and short loops, for example guitar riffs that he would feed into Ableton and flesh out into larger arrangements.
BadBadNotGood’s Alex and Chester were also guests on the album, alongside other friends and notably Whitty’s older brother, Lowell – which Leland credits as being a central musical inspiration in his life. This is the first time they had the chance to fully work together. Whitty built the album from small excerpts rather than have a more rigid intellectual compositional technique. He would envision the whole scope of a song, asking friends to contribute to shift each tracks’ rhythm and energy. Whitty’s role was both performer, composer and in some way a director, asking contributors to execute in an organic way and editing the results.
Whitty’s influences include numerous jazz musicians, from Wayne Shorter to John Coltrane. However, the inspirations for Anyhow were library records and arrangers like David Axelrod, Gary McFarland, Arthur Verocai and Brian Bennett. Contemporary composers - notably Jon Brion and Jonny Greenwood – were also strong stimuli for the scope of sound that feels personal and cinematic at the same time.
The layered result is very much a studio-based experience, creating a very particular sense of intimacy as a result. The track titles also have a focus on intimacy and emotion – Svalbard referencing ideas of physical isolation, for example. The album title, Anyhow, references Whitty’s do-it-yourself approach to composition, production and multi-instrument performance. The album is a look inward, expressing something personal – a reflection of the experience of music itself.

Composed in 1976 and studied by guitarists the world over, The Book of Heads is one of Zorn’s most popular and oft-performed compositions. Concentrated into 35 “heads” that can be used as jumping off points for improvisation, the score uses an hermetic language of meticulously notated sounds inspired by contemporary classical extended techniques, cartoons, film noir, Zen philosophy, and the idiosyncratic guitar languages of free improvisation via Chadbourne, Frith, Bailey et al.
Interpreted here by the madcap virtuoso they were originally created for: Eugene Chadbourne, they receive a passionate and creative interpretation—looser, wilder and more open than the textbook readings of James Moore and Marc Ribot. Vexingly entertaining, this curious release contains fifteen of the original 35 études: sixty minutes of the most gonzo music ever created for solo guitar!

TREVOR JONES & RANDY EDELMAN THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK
STREET DATE: December 9, 2022
iBarcoder Trial
Rare is the soundtrack that as time passes overshadows the film of which it was a part, but that’s what has happened in the years since the 1992 release of The Last of the Mohicans. Not that the film is any slouch; Michael Mann’s epic retelling of James Fenimore Cooper’s frontier tale is a cable TV fixture and more evidence that Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the great actors of our time. But the film’s music has emerged as easily one of the most popular scores of ‘90s cinema, with the “Main Title” in particular having become a part of our popular culture the same way as, say, the signature themes from Titanic, Star Wars, and other blockbusters. What makes it even more extraordinary is that the movie’s score emerged from postproduction turmoil as the work of two different composers, Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman. Jones’ work is more of the traditional orchestral soundtrack ilk, Edelman’s has a more contemporary feel, but somehow it all fits, with the closing credit song “I Will Find You” by Clannad an added bonus. Long a bestselling soundtrack CD, we at Real Gone Music are releasing this revered soundtrack on vinyl in orange with black streaks “smoke and fire” vinyl limited to 1000 copies, inside a gatefold festooned with production stills. Guaranteed to get your blood stirring!

The story behind this album, which marked Jack Kerouac’s debut as a recording artist, is almost as fascinating (but not quite) as the performances it contains. Kerouac had completely bombed in his first set during a 1957 engagement at the Village Vanguard when TV personality, comedian, and musician Steve Allen volunteered to accompany him on piano during the second. The results were so impressive that legendary engineer Bob Thiele then brought the duo into the studio to record an album for Dot Records. In true, stream-of-consciousness, Beat fashion, the entire album was cut in one session with one take for each track, Allen’s piano weaving in and out and occasionally commenting on Kerouac’s verbal riffs to great effect. However, when Poetry for the Beat Generation was ready for release in March 1958, Randy Wood, the president of Dot Records, was appalled by the then-daring language and subject matter and canceled the release…but not before 100 promo copies got out (and if you have one you’re set for life)! Thiele then left the company over the dispute and got the master tape in the bargain, which he finally released on the Hanover label which he founded with Allen in June 1959. That release still stands as one of the most momentous spoken word albums not just of the ‘50s but of all time…and we at Real Gone Music are proud to bring it to you in a milky clear vinyl version in Jack Kerouac’s 100th birthday year! of Blues”

Just like its predecessor, Poetry for the Beat Generation, legendary beatnik writer Jack Kerouac’s second album, Blues and Haikus, teamed him with producer Bob Thiele and came out on Thiele’s Hanover label in 1959. But this time around, instead of the debut’s inspired amateur jazz piano flourishes from Steve Allen, Kerouac insisted on bona fide jazz musicians to accompany his stream-of-consciousness prose. And boy, did he get them—big-time post-bop saxophonists Al Cohn and Zoot Sims made their bones in Woody Herman’s band, and here they provide effective counterpoint commentary to Kerouac’s readings. As for those who approach this release from a more literary angle, Blues and Haikus reflects Kerouac’s interest in Eastern religion and meditative practices as expressed in his novel The Dharma Bums as opposed to the more On the Road
Beat Generation. But

himself!

“The thing that's always set toe apart from its technically minded peers is its ability to tell short, concise stories — ecstatic, noodly, complex pop songs that unfold in less than five minutes.” -NPR
toe is a Japanese music group long revered in post-rock circles, while their song structures and dynamics have taken on elements from all styles of music, ranging from math-rock, jazz, pop, and R&B.
toe is composed of Kashikura Takashi on drums, Mino Takaaki on guitar, Yamane Satoshi on bass guitar, and Yamazaki Hirokazu on guitar. The band has formally played with this lineup since their inception in 1998.
The vast majority of the music is instrumental and features the swift, agile drumming of Takashi. The band is also known for melodic, clean guitar, often employing the juxtaposition of electric and acoustic. While the compositions feature the repetition of typical rock motifs, the subtle changes in beat and rhythm form a unique rhythmic dialect. The band has consistently expanded their sound throughout their musical tenure by incorporating singing, rhodes piano, mallet percussion, and electronic production elements.

Info:
An Insult to
the
Sport is a split offering from the genre de ant groups They are Gutting a Body of Water and A Country Western Elements of breakcore, shoegaze, and obtuse slacker rock nd home on An Insult, at times with no bridge at all between the disparate styles In TAGABOW’s “The Brazil”, a stop on a dime is the only thing that separates hazy slowcore and adventurous drum n bass, unambiguous evidence of the band’s penchant for iconoclast composition. A Country Western’s side of the split entertains similar stylistic mashups, opening with the atmospheric jungle of “Lung” before lurching into the alt rock “Keeping up with the Joneses”, whose fuzzed out lead riff calls back to bygone eras On paper, the combination of styles may read as cacophonous or incompatible, but the end result is instead a measured contrast of sounds, a re ection of the inescapable in uence of our chaotic time and the groups’ environments.
