Oracle Sisters Hydranism
Based in Paris, Oracle Sisters is composed of childhood friends Lewis Lazar and Christopher Willatt, and Finnish musician Julia Johansen. At the tail end of 2020 amidst the pandemic and second lockdown, Oracle Sisters decamped to Hydra, Greece to write and record their debut album, Hydranism. Recorded over the course of two months, the 11-track album reflects a world suspended in time between the future and the past, and embraces larger than life ballads, intimate folk songs and table thumping rousers spun with the silk of poetic reveries. “Mahōgakkō” is the new album by Hakushi Hasegawa (They/Them pronouns) – a musician/singer-songwriter based inTokyo, Japan, and the first Japanese artist signed to Flying Lotus’Brainfeeder label.The record includes the singles ‘Mouth Flash (Kuchinohanabi)’– featuring bass wizard Sam Wilkes (Leaving Records) – and ‘Boy’s Texture’plus ‘Gone’with rapper KID FRESINO.
Consistent with Brainfeeder’s ethos of seeking out artists operating outside the confines of genre since the label started in 2008, Hakushi’s music is tricky to categorize as it straddles a few genres: alternative, electronic, jazz, pop/J-pop. Sometimes it’s pretty, at times it’s very intense and fast-paced.The FADER described ‘Mouth Flash’as “wild-eyedfree-associatedbeatpoetrydeliveredthrough achinglybeautifulmelody.” Their music’s singular character has earned Hakushi plaudits from Crack Magazine, Needledrop (Anthony Fantano), XLR8R, Paste, Jazziz, Bandcamp Weekly,Tone Glow, and a coveted spot as KCRW’s ‘Today’sTopTune’.
Releasing since 2018, they’ve already made a name for themselves domestically in Japan with a string of wonderfully wild releases – gracing the covers of “MUSIC MAGAZINE” and Eureka – and started to build a cult following internationally.
Porter Robinson invited Hakushi to perform at his online festival “Secret Sky” in May 2020 (4M viewers) and in September 2023, Hakushi created the soundtrack for the noir kei ninomiya Spring/Summer 2024 runway show for Comme des Garçons at Paris Fashion Week.
Hakushi released their debut EP“Somoku Hodo” as a teenager in 2018, featuring fan favourites ‘Somoku’and ‘Doku’, followed by their debut album “Air Ni Ni” in 2019. In March 2024, Brainfeeder released first-time limited vinyl pressings of these cult titles.

Jontavious Willis is resolved in his mission: to reinvigorate today’s Blues with the spirit of the past. Drawn to a time when the Blues were plentiful and rhythm reigned supreme, Jontavious leverages his unique sound—a synthesis of his Georgia heritage and the rich history of the Blues—to get the world dancing again. A Grammy-nominated musician and songwriter, Jontavious performs original, toe-tapping tunes in the style of Delta, Piedmont, and Texas Blues. With a bawdy, playful sense of humor, he channels the lively “rent parties” and “juke joints” of yesteryear, imparting the vitality of the Blues across communities today.
Jontavious was born and raised in rural Georgia, an environment with deep cultural roots that inspire his soulful vocals and virtuosic technique. He spent much of his childhood singing Gospel music with his grandfather at the Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church, the site of his earliest live performances. A teenage phenom, Jontavious achieved widespread acclaim when he accompanied living Blues legend Taj Mahal—who would go on to dub him his “Wonderboy”—onstage in 2015. His first opportunity to tour nationally soon followed; he opened for Taj Mahal and Keb’ Mo’ during their joint TajMo tour in 2017.

Spanning nearly 30 years of revolutionary music and featuring the music of Count Ossie, Johnny Clarke, The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari, Bongo Herman, Earth & Stone and many more, this is an in-depth look at some of the heaviest and righteous music ever made!
Soul Jazz Records' Rastafari: The Dreads Enter Babylon charts the many links between reggae music and Rastafarianism. The album comes complete with full gatefold and bespoke inner sleeves, containing stunning exclusive photography and extensive sleevenotes.
Rastafarianism had its roots at the start of the 20th century and became widespread in Jamaica following the visit of Haile Selassie, the King of Ethiopia, to Kingston in 1966. By the 1970s Rastafarianism become practically synonymous with reggae, as many roots reggae artists became known throughout the world, notably spearheaded by the success of Bob Marley and The Wailers.

Strut introduces a pioneering new compilation 'A Dancefloor In Ndola,' curated by revered East African DJ, Kampire. This release marks an evolution in Strut's approach to compilations, showcasing emerging DJ talent from across the world and embracing an innovativeapproachtomusicaldiscoveryfromthenextwaveofselectors.
Forging her reputation through memorable sets for the Nyege Nyege Festival in Uganda over the last decade, Kampire now tours worldwide and is celebrated for her brilliantly curated sets spanning the full range of African music styles from the ‘70s and ‘80s to the presentday.
Although born in Uganda, Kampire spent her formative years in Ndola, Zambia. ‘A Dancefloor In Ndola’ is inspired by artists and songs that formed part of her soundtrack during that time. “It is important for me to continually reference Africa’s own musical history,”sheexplains.“At 17, I didn’t pick up on my Dad’s music but now I love and collect those records. I’m constantly referencing them in my music sets today. I love that feeling of shared nostalgia where people recognise a song they haven’t heard in a long time. It’s hard to believe it’s been 15 years, give or take a few, since we tried our hand out at writing, recording, and playing our songs. We had a wild ride and feel privileged, but mostly grateful, to pursue music in the way that we did. A lot of life happened during our tenure as a band and that didn’t stop since our last show or record.
The people and places the band introduced us to continue to serve as the most incredible memories and to add to that, King�sher is turning 10 years old. The nostalgia is real. We had been toying around with the idea of reuniting for quite some time, so there seemed no better time to do it than now.
Having Topshelf in our corner as we began preparing to do this was a no brainer. After talking to Kev and the TSR crew of our plans, it was like no time had passed as they’ve always been great friends and a support system to us. Topshelf repressing King�sher in its original intended format, as a double LP, feels like a very monumental way to commemorate a record that means so much to us.
We can’t wait to get back out there to commemorate 15 years of Prawn and King�sher’s 10th Birthday. We will be having original members (welcome back Vilchez) to help celebrate with a run of shows that we feel very fortunate to do. Cheers to the last 15 years and all of you reading this for being part of our journey. Let’s see what the next 15 hold in store!

One of the most legendary bands from the 90s Swedish progressive scene is finally back with a new album, 17 years since the last full-length. Ritual has often been a band with a concept, and their music has often been inspired by Tove Jansson’s novels about the Moomins. On their return, we’re invited into the strange story of the mysterious Mr. Bogd. And this fifth studio album is only part 1 of the story!
Since its formation in 1993, the band soon established a distinct progressive style of their own influenced by progressive rock and hard rock of the ‘70s as well as contemporary bands. They’ve always been song-based, melodic and intense, with a great stylistic variation, and plenty of folk music influences seeping in. The latter feature is not least due to the band's frequent use of acoustic instruments like bouzouki, mandola, whistles and the Swedish nyckelharpa (a keyed fiddle). On the epic “The Story of Mr. Bogd Part 1”, Ritual is definitely continuing on this musical journey, and the new songs will hit old fans right in the heart.

Sacrament is the classic third album from Norwegian prog legends White Willow, originally released in 2000. For this album, the band spent a long, long time working on the songs and arrangements, coming up with inventive, dynamic and beautiful arrangements for each song. After lengthy rehearsals at the Norwegian Institute for Scene and Studio, the band entered a new studio, called Lydkjøkkenet. The studio wasrun by the friendly and very talented engineer Øystein Vesaas, whose patience and mild manners were a perfect fit for the band, allowing time to experiment and try out different solutions.
Sacrament was recorded over an extended period. Holm-Lupo was working a full-time day job at the time, so sessions would often be running from the evening into the night. But everyone was energized and had great faith in the music being made, and remember the recording as an enjoyable experience. The album was madeduring a period where certain elements of prog were beginning to drip into the mainstream, which also provided some moral motivation. And when the album was released, it was to unanimously glowing reviews and healthy sales – and even some mainstream recognition.
This re-release was meticulously remastered by the band’s own Jacob Holm-Lupo and is presented with the classic original cover art, for the first time on vinyl. This is the third in a series of six White Willow re-releases on Karisma Records.

The Faint has always been perceived as a series of paradoxes: Nebraskans tra cking in electro-pop anthems; a ve-person out t who insist on songwriting democracy; punk rockers laying down their guitars for a decidedly untypical kind of punk rock.
After touring tirelessly throughout the world on the heels of 2004’s Wet From Birth the band returned to their native Omaha; renovating a building and creating a studio where they would write, record, and produce their fth LP, Fasciinatiion entirely on their own.
With Fasciinatiion, The Faint gave the world the realest representation of them selves to date. Imbued equally with the musical instincts and perspectives of each band member, “It’s all The Faint,” lead singer Todd Fink explains. “There’s no outside anything. It’s exactly what ve people in The Faint could agree on. Or come close.”
The Swedish folk duo Pettersson & Fredriksson has distinguished themselves with artful mastery of the keyed fiddle and nordic mandola. Their stage performances, a rich blend of original compositions and traditional melodies, have captivated audiences worldwide.
The 2010 release of “Sotali” showcased an unorthodox musical approach compared to its predecessor, “Virek” (2004). The album not only echoes the duo’s Västerbotten heritage but also draws from influences as wide-ranging as the innovative artistry of Sigur Rós to the minimalist melancholia of José Gonzalez. As a result, “Sotali” is infused with both folkish energy and soothing tranquillity. The instruments engage in a timeless interplay, creating a soundscape that is at once contemporary and steeped in antiquity.

Somewhere in the ether/net of our collective social cosmos soup floats the magical, masterful pop music of Magdalena Bay, the duo from Los Angeles composed of Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin. While the pair may claim California as its terra firma, its true home is in the clouds, from where the two emit and output the unique yet familiar frequencies of synthesized nostalgia, kitschy catchiness, and bombastically warped neo-hooks for which the group has become celebrated. Transmitting in both the audio and video realms, Magdalena Bay is an entity adroitly suited for these times, caught in a haze of the known and felt while pushing sonic landscapes woven with the now into the next.
Having met as teenagers in a high school music program in their hometown of Miami (Tenebaum having moved to Florida at age 1 from Buenos Aires), each quickly recognized a kismet and kindred spirit in the other, resulting in the formation of a band, the prog outfit Tabula Rasa, as well as a romance. Lewin was a self-styled guitar shredder armed with his dad’s prog and concept rock records — The Wall, The Bends, Genesis, Fiona Apple — while Tenenbaum was a pianist and singer dipping toes in indie (Modest Mouse) and emo (My Chemical Romance) rock as well as pop made by princesses (Shakira, Britney). Both could read music and Lewin had even studied music theory, also teaching himself how to produce, record, and mix while making two Tabula Rasa records. The pair took a brief break from dating and headed to different colleges but kept the band together, often trading eight-hour bus rides from Penn to Northeastern and vice versa to rehearse, before eventually realizing two things: one, their relationship was too real to be denied, and two, no one young likes prog.
“It was like, ‘No one's listening to our prog music, what a shame,’” Tenebaum says with a laugh. “We were excited to try something different. So we got into the mechanics of ‘what does it mean to write a pop song?’ and ‘what is this craft?’ and that was the beginning of Magdalena Bay.”
“I remember thinking, ‘Pop music is simple, so we should be able to make it,’” Lewin says. “And then, of course, there's way more to it, lots of complexities in the writing and production that I wasn't aware of. We had no artistic perspective at that point because we were still figuring out the genre and how to make something that resembled pop music before we could think about how we could make it interesting. So that was our early process.”
Holding tight to that all-encompassing genre descriptor (“We make pop, but what really is pop anyway?” Tenenbaum asks, while Lewin counters, “We're a pop group making pop music; all the rest is implied…I think it's fun to imply that pop music is a wide range of things”), the duo released a grip of EPs and singles before launching its debut album Mercurial World in the fall of 2021. Many outlets, while uniformly praising its melodic hooks, sing-song vocals, and meticulously-crafted production, called it “synth-pop,” which is probably the most specific subgenre Lewin and Tenenbaum will allow. Regardless, the mark had been made, and Magdalena Bay soon began to gather respect, adulation, and fans in the true currency of the day: streaming numbers, social media followers, support slots, festival appearances, and creative collabs. All the while, aided by its highly stylized online aesthetic and internet presence, the band was inching closer to realizing something of an artistic perspective after all.
“We love extending the world of our music past sound into videos or a website or graphics or whatever it might be,” Tenenbaum says. “We like to think of them as one and the same, but I think it has to start with the music,” Lewin says. “We're trying to create an atmosphere or an emotional quality with it.”
“It's the jumping off point that inspires the rest,” Tenenbaum agrees. “But as the years have gone by, as we’ve made more and more videos and such, the process has become more integrated. We were having visual ideas, which was never the case before. I guess people call it ‘world-building.’

▶ Beggars Arkive in conjunction with the Estate of Mark Lanegan, are honored to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Mark Lanegan’s acclaimed 2004 album Bubblegum.
The album has been cut as a double LP and is newly remastered by Geoff Pesche at Abbey Road. It is available on standard black everywhere, and as an indie exclusive on transparent red vinyl.
Bubblegum XX features features members of Queens of the Stone Age, PJ Harvey, Greg Dulli, Izzy and Duff from Guns & Roses/Velvet Revolver, among other assorted rock luminaries.
When Bubblegum was released, Mark chose to let it speak for itself and didn’t have much to say aside from within the small handful of interviews he did at the time. In 2017, he released a book of lyrics and writings called I Am The Wolf and wrote about the album then. Shared here are some of his words about the record.
Song favorites include “When Your Number Isn’t Up,” and “Strange Religion,” a love song I wrote in a Tokyo hotel room. While many of the songs came from a place of dejection and ennui at the end of a tempestuous relationship, “Bombed” in particular came about when, after I had written and recorded it in just a few minutes, I put a microphone in front of Wendy Rae Fowler, my soon-to-be-ex-wife, and had her sing along while simultaneously hearing it for the first time. I loved the result as it reminded me of Royal Trux, a band I liked. When I insisted on

PINK RHYTHM An80s LoveAffair
▶ AN 80S LOVE AFFAIR contains six classic Pink Rhythm tracks, four of which have not been available on vinyl since the original single releases in 1985. The tracks were originally produced and recorded at Miraval Studios in The South of France. They were mixed by John Rocca in Rooster Studios London and remastered in 2024 by Geoff Pesche at Abbey Road.
Pink Rhythm was one of John Rocca’s mid-80’s solo side projects and a somewhat evolution of his pioneering early-80s band, Freeez.
After Freeez ended, John still had some ideas left over which he explored with Andy Stennett of Freeez. John also re-worked one of the final jazz funk songs written (but unused) by Freeez called “India”. He named the project Pink Rhythm after his self-funded, entrepreneurial record label that he used to launch Freeez.
Pink Rhythm lasted a brief year or two, between 1984 and 1985. In 1985, three singles were released, including “Melodies Of Love, which has become a cult favorite. It has been described as “timeless drum-machine soul music” and a “cult funk slow jam”.
Over the years, John Rocca’s music has been sampled by many, including Jamie xx, Empress Of, Brandy, Burial, Todd Terry, Coolio, Cut Chemist and more. Often credited as one of the pioneers of brit-funk, John’s music is iconic and has been used in TV/Movies like; Better Call Saul, Midsommar, Irma Vep plus the fashion world for brands including Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton and more. “Melodies of Love” - though never a pop hit - was recently been used the Joaquin Phoenix film Beau is Afraid as well as in the acclaimed British Film Blue Jean. It was also recently featured in a high-end ad campaign for Piaget.
It is pure, smooth 80s drum machines, it is synth sounds, saxophones and keyboards…. it’s retro, but it could also be current. Either way, it’s as refreshing now as it was then.

For the past decade, SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE have honed an aesthetic like no other. They’ve chopped up samples, chewed them up, spit them back out again, baby birded it. Frank Ocean became a fan, spinning “fell asleep with a vision,” on Blonded Radio. 2021’s ENTERTAINMENT DEATH , was nasty dream pop by way of K-Mart realism and hitting the channel search setting on an old TV set.
Their last release, 2023’s i’m so lucky , explored the breakup between Schwartz and Ravede, setting the stage and emotional territory for the band’s fth record, YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING . This latest o ering is the most crystallized version of the band’s aesthetic, a continued meditation on the end of relationships and the unsteadiness that follows. It is a meticulous, beautiful, and quietly heartbreaking collection of songs. More often than not, it sounds like listening to a walkman from inside of a hurricane, like the YouTube videos you’d watch in bed for 18 hours straight after you break your wrist from a skateboarding accident.
YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING is a record of provocations. It wants you to think it is just normal rock ‘n’ roll music. That it is purely pleasure oriented. But beneath these intentions is a collection of songs that are as complex as ever. Like all SPIRIT records, it is music made by three distinct voices, written independently and then assembled together. Despite being written all over the globe, with Ravede in Portugal and Schwartz and Wichlin back in Philadelphia, the trio arrived at the same themes: that of the brutality of coming to terms with reality, that of what it means to lie to protect yourself and your heart. Schwartz says he writes songs more or less in a stream of consciousness. The band listens to very little outside music when working. The result is a record that very much is its own world. Where chaos is carefully organized, where being able to ever actually chill out is totally illusory, a trick mirror.

Fake Fruit’s visceral indie rock operates so firmly in the present that it’s transportive and unmooring. The Oakland trio’s songs careen with volatile energy and lead singer Ham D’Amato’s lyrics are enveloped with acerbic humor and resonant perceptiveness. Though their new LP Mucho Mistrust is a sly reference to a beloved Blondie lyric, the title encapsulates both the anxieties of daily life, a bloodless music industry, and global capitalism as well as the cleareyed skepticism needed to rebel against it. Across 12 propulsively unpredictable tracks, the album is both their most collaborative and most immediate yet.
Following the 2021 release of Fake Fruit’s self-titled debut LP, the band’s personal lives hit a turbulent and transformational period. “There were big life changes and I was so close to boiling over,” says D’Amato. “I left a bad relationship, entered a more stable and loving one, got diagnosed with alopecia, and I’m turning 30 soon too.” This personal upheaval was channeled into the explosive lead single “Mucho Mistrust.” The track is simultaneously disorienting and direct, with clanging guitars from Alex Post, off-kilter drums from Miles MacDiarmid, and D’Amato snarling, “How you gonna blame me / when you could’ve done something about it / it’s not right / How you gonna marinate me / in shitty things overnight.” She explains, “This song was a snapshot of how I got through a difficult year.”
Recorded live at the Bay Area’s Atomic Garden studio with producer Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Home Is Where), the band’s palpable ferocity shines throughout the record. Single “Más o Menos” is searing punk, with buzzsaw guitars and surging bass. It’s a clenched-fist song, one where D’Amato sings, “I decided to assert myself / After I lost all my sense of self.” Later in the track, D’Amato, who is Chicana, sings in Spanish, “¡No me hables! / ¡No escuchare!” While some of these songs deal in heartbreak, they are charged with way bigger themes. “There’s also wanting to break up with capitalism and feeling upset about things politically,” says D’Amato.
For the band, these themes are personal. “I’m managing us while I’m in between changing diapers in my day job as a nanny,” says D’Amato. “Everyone in the band still believes in it and is motivated to keep wading through the bullshit.” On this album, they had no choice but to bet on themselves and each other. No track broadcasts their evolution better than the single “Cause of Death,” which morphs from a gorgeous sax-laden banger to something cathartic and anthemic.
As adventurous and righteous as Mucho Mistrust gets, there’s still an inviting core that never takes itself too seriously. From the ripping “Cause of Death,” which self-deprecatingly takes aim at anxiety and indecision, to the searing title track, Fake Fruit imbue their songs with humor and heart. “Our band is fun,” says D’Amato. “My number one coping mechanism for all of life is to joke about it. Even when the album talks about serious things, I am proud of how funny it can be.”

The Moon and the Melodies is a singular record within the Cocteau Twins’ catalogue - unusually ethereal, even by their standards, and largely instrumental, guided by the free-form improvisations of Harold Budd, an ambient pioneer who had drifted into their orbit as if by divine intervention. Building on the atmospheric bliss of Victorialand, released earlier the same year, it signalled a possible future for the trio, yet it was a path they’d never take again. Now, almost forty years after it was first released, it’s being reissued on vinyl for the first time – remastered, from the original tapes, by Robin Guthrie himself.
No one involved can recall exactly how it came about. As both Guthrie and Simon Raymonde remember it, the independent UK television station Channel 4 approached them about a film project pairing musicians from different genres. In interviews in the 1980s, however, Budd (who sadly passed away in 2020), believed his publisher linked them after the group had expressed interest in covering one of his songs. In any case, the film never happened. “But we’d spoken to Harold, and we were all quite excited about it,” Raymonde recalls. “We’re like, well, let’s carry on and do it anyway and see what happens.”
Convening in the band’s newly built recording studio (September Sound in West London), all four got on immediately and over a fortnight, made a quite astounding record. Their contrasting approaches shaped the album’s somewhat curious format – four instrumentals in Budd’s meandering style, more tone poems than actual songs, and four more structured pieces with verses, choruses, drum machine, and, of course, Elizabeth Fraser’s inimitable singing, as bold and inspired as ever.
Another curious thing is that the album is credited to all four players under their individual names, following the same intuitive logic as everything else that went into the record. These days, however, on streaming services, you’ll find the album filed chronologically alongside the rest of the band’s work.
“What’s interesting,” Guthrie adds, “is that I got the tape boxes from the studio, and guess what it says on it? ‘Cocteau Twins plus Harold Budd.’” Perhaps, he seems to suggest, the group got hung up on a detail that never really mattered. In any case, Raymonde says, “The more credit that Harold gets for the work he did, the more people that find his music because it’s in the Cocteau environment, the better.”
Over the ensuing years, The Moon and the Melodies has attracted a passionate fan base. Its most atmospheric tracks routinely turn up in ambient DJ sets. ‘Sea, Swallow Me’ is one of the Cocteau Twins’ most streamed songs on Spotify, having found a new life on TikTok, where it serves as the soundtrack to innumerable expressions of hard-to-express melancholy.
For such a low-key affair, the album casts a long shadow –but Raymonde believes the record’s uniqueness stems directly from its humble, unpremeditated origins.

“Over the last 10 years I’ve been told by countless people, emotional and earnest, that their favorite record of mine is Something Else. I love that, and I nod in amused reverence to it here.
The me of 2012-2013 was drowning in pain and insecurity and my own press, pissed off that nobody could see me for who I really was, what I had really been through, and how hard it was to be me. I was walled in by fears and worries that I would never be good enough. I was struggling with my voice after a debilitating virus and a six week tour. I had rented a little room in the Grandview neighborhood of Columbus and was plugging away on my splintered acoustic guitar with a tape recorder. I was frustrated as could be, not coming up with anything that I felt was “me” or even remotely song like. One day, when I finally thought I had a nugget of something, I read the lyrics aloud to my then husband and he looked at me confused and said, “what are you even trying to say in this, though? Who is the narrator?” I don’t remember what I said to that but I’m sure it wasn’t kind.
When I went back into the studio with my friend Caeleigh Featherstone recording me this go round, she looked at me at one point and said, “Were you singing these songs in front of old dudes? Like, your husband?” Yes, I was, I told her. We both shook our heads and laughed at the hubris on 22-year-old Lydia Loveless.”

The world of ENDON is one of constant evolution and revolution. Black Bile compiles some of Umberto’s most resplendent, sanguine music to date. The solo work of LA composer Matt Hill draws heavily from the world of cinema, spinning immersive narratives and rich atmospheres using sound alone. Hill, an active composer for film and television, recently scored the 2022 Jerry Pyle film Loveseat (soundtrack was released in 2023). Other recent scores include the 2020 thriller Archenemy, from the producers of cult classic Mandy
Inspired by the ancient Greek theory of the “four humors,” an early medical theory linking the inner workings of the human body to the elements. “Black bile” specifically links the feelings of melancholy with autumn. Hill’s celestial compositions are an autumnal soundtrack conveying beauty, yearning, reflection and comfort.
Many of the album’s phrases are constructed from just two notes or sounds, arranged by Hill into complex patterns that undulate with an organic pulse. The spare melodic structure holds a myriad of small and beautiful details. The songs began with Hill improvising on the piano, to find the notes and patterns that created the musical and emotional structure from which he could expand with textural detail. Hill then would often remove the initial structure leaving a sparer and more skeletal one which he could again expand upon to create a full piece. The careful attention to each detail gives his minimal compositions emotional heft. The album masterfully stakes Umberto’s claim among other avant-ambient boundary pushers such as Lawrence English or Laurel Halo.

Thrasher is the soundtrack to a virtual reality video game about a creature that has a life cycle that traverses different psychedelic realities. Thrasher was composed and performed by Brian Gibson, bassist of Lightning Bolt. It is the follow up to the acclaimed best-selling game and soundtrack Thumper. The central character in Thrasher is a giant centipede like creature, so Gibson employed a lot of melodic sequences that resonated well with its segments moving through space.
Says Gibson:
“I grew up playing some of the earliest video games, Pac-Man, Space Invaders on an Atari 2600. Due to the limitations of those graphics they were extremely abstract games compared to today’s games which are just trying to simulate reality in the highest possible detail. I prefer games that make their own reality. I’d like to be transported as far from this one as possible… like Pac-Man, when you play it, it’s obvious what you are supposed to do, it makes its own sense.”
The soundtrack has the drive you might expect knowing Gibson’s work in Lightning Bolt combined with complex melodic structures that are absolutely irresistible. In addition to bucking the hyperreality trend in gameplay, Gibson’s DIY ethos and warehouse culture roots permeate the entire soundtrack. He says it best: “Thumper has that combination of psychedelic and iconic that takes me back to the Fort Thunder days. Thrasher is a further exploration into some of those motifs.” We recommend that you play this record VERY loudly.

Finding new inspiration, bands were beginning to experiment with techniques as the digital age took over. A case study in her new book, Bark Psychosis were one of the most innovative bands of their time and as legend has it, saw the first use of the term ‘post-rock’ by music critic Simon Reynolds. Following several singles and EPs, the avant-garde soundscapes built around drones and samples of 21-minute stand-out track ‘Scum’ arrived just two years before their seminal debut ‘Hex’ (1994). Frustrated by the mainstream, ‘Scum’ was a huge statement that set them apart from the beginning. Bark Psychosis’ sound was born out of their improvisations at makeshift studio within St John’s Church in Stratford. Taking a year to complete ‘Hex’ left the band on the brink of collapse and by the time of its release they had dissolved. Hailed as a masterpiece, it’s “mysterious, haunting, and breathtakingly visionary” (Allmusic). Breaking down their songs and rebuilding them in the studio brought distinguishing ambient soundscapes and an atmospheric experimental sound. Last year Fact Magazine deservedly gave the album further recognition with it claiming top spot in their ’30 Best Post-Rock Albums Of All Time’.

Recorded as part of the same daydreaming puzzle as Unwishing Well, Still Clouds at Noon brings out the slowcore/sadcore elements that drift through The Reds, Pinks & Purples’ melancholy catalog. Donaldson names '90s hometown San Francisco acts such as American Music Club and the more obscure Timco as pivotal to his guitar playing and development as a songwriter, both of which shine bright here. The slower tempo ballads on Still Clouds… often culminate in heavy fuzz drenched codas and showcase the more abstract poetic side of Donaldson’s lyricism. There’s an inherent pop-sensibility always at work though, with ear-worm melodies appearing over intoxicating circular riffs.
Formerly a Bandcamp only digital release, this white vinyl version is remastered and adds two unreleased tracks, one featuring Mark Monnone from Australian poplegends The Lucksmiths on bass. Edition of 500.

In many ways, both obvious and not, K is Mallory Linehan’s - who performs under the name Chelsea Bridge - most experimental album. The conservatory trained classical violinist creates deeply felt compositions and foggy soundscapes punctuated by spiky blasts of harsh noise. Chelsea Bridge shows can range from subdued, ceiling-staring lie-ins to erotically charged, situationist-heavy noise attacks on that same ceiling-staring detachment. The two extremes often do not lie dormant inside the same body for long. If you are familiar with Chelsea Bridge as the Chicago D.I.Y stalwart, Not Not venue operator, Desert Liminal member, Girlfriend Experience provocateur - to read a press release with an RIYL that starts with an Alvvays comparison may seem…
As a record, K floats on its own volition. The quieter moments are held together in a gossamer thread of hypnagogic building and blending of voices, delayed guitars and harmonies with the emotional gut-punch of Mallory Linehan’s violin delivering sweeping, top-line melodies. An unironic sentimentality unfolds sweetly, tucking moments of real dread in songs like “Will Anything Ever Get Any Better” and “Loveable Loser” beneath its downy wings. Sun soaked California is transmuted through the opaque yellow glow of a car’s interior light in the freezing Chicago night in “Car Song”. “FOMO” is a sweeping, sweet strummer that wouldn’t sound out of place on 90’s alt-rock radio that gets lifted to unexpected heights with Linehan’s violin. There are moments on “Accountable” where distorted guitars signal at swallowing the track until pulling back, leaving the loudness war unfought.
Noise and especially anything that can be broadly characterized as “experimental” is often approached as a collage. Taking what is and twisting it into what could be. In a lot of ways K feels inevitable for an artist like Chelsea Bridge. Not only does she demonstrate the technical chops to craft undeniably catchy and affecting songs, but as an artist who believes that the art you are making is the art you are supposed to make, K is simply another set of sounds, tools and work in her head and at her fingertips, just waiting to be let out.

Nick Maurer is watching a busy street parade from an open window many stories up, and Come On In! describes to us each passerby. His production incorporates the sounds of the environment: chirping cicadas, whirring bicycle spokes, crowds whooping and cheering. This remaster of his first release includes live recordings and then some.
Three spoken-word interludes from anonymous guests punctuate the 20-track, remastered-forvinyl album that include live performances with his band The Grocers, field recordings, and stories told solo on guitar.
