GREAT CATALOGUE PICKS

At its best, harmony duo singing can transform simple math into a magic trick. One plus one, instead of equaling two, suddenly yields an unexpected third thing. An upper-case ONE. A universal hum. A deep vibration that encompasses two different points of view. On their latest release, Every Time I Think About You, brothers Jack Torrey and Page Burkum, aka The Cactus Blossoms, once again prove themselves to be among the most adept - and distinctive – modern practitioners of that magic. But like any great magician, The Cactus Blossoms can’t - or won’t - fully explain the illusion they create.

“Harmonies are a big part of our sound, but in some ways they’re the part we focus on the least,” says Burkum. “We put most of our attention and energy into the songs themselves and then the harmonies just happen.”

There’s all kinds of magic happening on Every Time I Think About You, a record that sounds more like a band than any other in the Cactus Blossoms discography, thanks to contributions from Jeremy Hanson (drums), Jacob Hanson (guitar) and Phillip Hicks (bass). “There She Goes” casts its romantic regret against a danceable bop beat, and the title track is a heart-wrencher about loss and letting go.

“Even if you don’t set out to write songs with a theme in mind it seems like one usually presents itself,” says Torrey. “This record keeps returning to the idea of ‘moving on’ — from one place to another, from people and situations that bring you down, from loss and grief.”

Blockhead Music by Cavelight (20th Anniversary Reissue)

Release Date: 08-30-2024

The debut solo studio album by the acclaimed NYC-based hip-hop producer and beatmaker Blockhead originally released in 2004. Initially building a rep via his close association with fellow NewYorker and rapper Aesop Rock and releasing via El P’s cult underground hip-hop label Definitive Jux, it was perhaps inevitable that Blockhead would explore solo instrumental production. The beats on ‘Music by Cavelight’explore moodier tones and textures with lush instrumentation underpinned by trademark tough drums.

This is a record that establishes its own emotional space and holds it from start to finish, establishing Blockhead as a major player in the so-called trip-hop movement alongside the likes of DJ Shadow, RJD2, DJ Krush and Kid Koala. The 20th anniversary edition includes 2 bonus discs featuring classicAesop Rock instrumentals and never-before-released “Lost Files” from ‘99-’03.

OVERVIEW

By turns devotional, empowering and nurturing, Jon Hopkins’ RITUAL is a 41-minute electronic symphony built from cavernous subs, hypnotic drumming and transcendent melodic interplay. Tense, immersive and ultimately triumphant, it is a culmination of themes explored throughout his 22-year career, and acts as the kinetic counterpart to 2021’s Music For Psychedelic Therapy.

A single piece unfolding over eight chapters, RITUAL is personified by depth and contrast. Taking ceremony, spiritual liberation and the hero's journey as inspiration, it taps into an ancient and primal energy.

Keeley Forsyth is a composer, singer and actor from Oldham in the north-west of England.

Built upon sparse arrangements, Forsyth’s music is centred around a singular, emotionally raw and magnetic vocal delivery, by turns devastating and uplifting. The characters who populate her songs tell stories of the high and low tides; of freedom and entrapment, of hard-won triumphs and the darker corners of domestic life.

Love Rudiments

Love Rudiments is a meditation by Ty Segall on his first love: the drums. Known popularly as a singing guitar player, he generally starts the recording of his songs by laying down a drum track. Love Rudiments kicks off with drums and percussion, then adds a few other percussive and production aspects. It travels a great journey in this configuration. However, Love Rudiments wasn’t written or performed to present as some kind of solo drums album it’s just another music album, with vibes (figurative as well as literal), feels, a theme and a through-line.

Never one to shy away from a challenge, Ty’s made an instrumental album of percussive music that rides the wild surf of a waxing-then-waning love affair from the first blinding look, to the eventual recognition, that look back at love’s rudiments, viewed from beyond and outside that seemingly infinite sensation.

And why not? Drums are a melody instrument too. Ty plays them with precision and sensitivity, delving deep into the textures of timpani, vibraphone, xylophone, percussion and e-drums, all of them occupying space within the luxe stereo spread of the drumkit. In the process, a psychological space is opened — a private emotional location where only two can meet.

Love Rudiments reembodies the passion and compulsion that drives all of Ty Segall’s music in a suite of moments played on orchestral batterie to explore the most delicate passages of human interaction — playing on the bones of love.

TRACK LISTING: 1. Skrag Theme (13:02) 2. Vivea (6:18) 3. Safeless (12:03)

For those of you who’ve mislaid your history goggles, this archival release recalls an ancient time in the world of recorded music. Yes, back in the dinosaur days of the 1990s, a creature known as Aerial M walked the earth, before evolving into Papa M and PAJO and beyond and back. Even then, the music of M had a next-wave vibe, walking upright among the knuckle-draggers (and having drinks in the evening with others of its genetic detatchment). It was too much to last very long, of course but some things end up lasting forever, don’t they? Fuck! So it is today that Drag City, an organization largely set up to bring you the best of all available M recordings, is proud to be there for the release of the only Aerial M session ever recorded for John Peel’s BBC Radio One show, as it was originally recorded on 4th February 1998 and broadcast on 3rd March of the same year.

The studio versions of these songs, which appear on Aerial M’s self-titled album ( DC114) and Papa M’s Hole of Burning Alms comp ( DC231), were played by “M” himself (now revealed to be David Pajo!), which makes this album a rare alternative view of the canonical M , played by an actual Aerial M band who, all too briefly, embodied the sound for a year or so before Papa brought a brand new bag.

This Session found them fortuitously roadburned from several weeks in the European Theatre. So much the better for our archival ears, as OG-M’s signature minimalist long-fuse sizzle is thrillingly intact here; in fact, even more so, as the tunes are jammed out past the studio versions’ originally delineated borders, reaching rudely across the table in moments of liveness that the studio-bound project might have decided against when conferring only with the walls.

For fans of their epic version of “Turn Turn Turn,” this is more sweetmeats from that raucous old skull but if you’ve not been down this road before, be prepared: the taste will set you slowly aflame. And then, before you know it, the band is dined and dashed just like the band that Aerial M was, all too briefly amok on the earth that was too. Salute!

Drag City presents the first official reissue of Dorothy Carter ’s 1976 album debut, her folk-music exegesis, Troubadour. In her lifetime, Dorothy, a self-made traveling musician and folklorist, brought forth masterful evocations on hammered dulcimer and psaltery from a myriad of times and places. Her music was played, produced and sold outside of that era’s mainstream music distribution.

It’s been 20 years since Dorothy ’s passing but thanks to last year’s reissue of her second album, Waillee Waillee (1978), and this edition of Troubadour, her music is surging forward ever more powerfully. 2035 will mark the centennial of her birth; the mythos and arcana she pursued in relative obscurity is now inspiring an audience larger than Dorothy ever knew. At the time of that centennial, some will, no doubt, look back to the good old days of the early ’20s, when they first heard her music.

Others, like Troubadour reissue producer Eric Demby, can look back to a childhood spent off the grid: the early ’70s in rural Maine, and later on, in Boston wherever his freewheeling father brought the family, at one point or another, there too was Dorothy, as she lived and breathed, playing her hammered dulcimer. Her presence was always friendly and warm, yet “ethereal” her mind far away, her focus seemingly deep within the music, the instruments and the world from which they’d come.

As for the world from which she came: following a childhood spent around New England, Dorothy traveled abroad for her higher education. She found herself in the late 1950s in Mexico, intent on becoming a nun at the Cuernavaca monastery. Instead, she fell in with a group of expats including David Demby ( Eric’s father), his soon-to-be-wife Constance (her moment of New Age musical breakthrough still three decades hence) and aspiring artist and musician Bob Rutman . These were her people, looking for their place in the world.

From Mexico City, they made it back up to New York, to Greenwich Village, where Rutman opened an art and “happenings” gallery while Dorothy delved deep into the mystic things of traditional music and sounds, living the bohemian life while bringing up two dearly-loved children with her itinerant lifestyle.

As the ’60s became the ’70s, Eric recalls, “She was always coming from somewhere or on her way somewhere else, transporting instruments and folklore from Eastern Europe, Appalachia, and beyond that felt ancient and unearthed, which she would channel into our universe.”

The early ’70s found everyone living up on the farm up in rural Maine; it was here that Rutman , Constance, Dorothy and some others formed Central Maine Power Company, a troupe of almost feral improvisers playing on a combination of self-made and found instruments, with live video feedback to boot. Self-documentation wasn’t on their minds; simply BEING was enough. And so they were for several years, playing at planetariums around the northeast and even MoMA and the nascent World Trade towers.

In 1976, Dorothy had been playing music for decades, but had yet to record any of it. That year, she went to Cambridge’s Studio B with Rutman and friend Steve Baer at the console. Constance and Sally Hilmer accompanied her. The performances captured there were released later that year as Troubadour. In addition to hammered dulcimer and psaltery, Dorothy played the flute and sang. She chose songs from all over: Appalachian folk tunes, old and ancient psalms and hymns, Scottish, Irish, French and Israeli melodies, with a few of her own songs for good measure.

They all flow together effortlessly under Dorothy and friends’ hands in a syncretic space that we can identify today as a garden of world musics a highly energized, alternately meditative and proselytic recital whose vitality has only burgeoned in the decades since it appeared. As it should be: the music of Dorothy Carter is akin to a portal, linking her and us with the eternal.

This edition of Troubadour reproduces the original album package, adding an insert adorned with additional photos of Dorothy and her collection of instruments, as well as notes from Eric Demby exploring the era his childhood from a vantage point of some 50 years. This reissue is a long-held family dream come true, and it is dedicated in loving memory to Bob Rutman , Constance Demby, David Demby and Dorothy Carter

ITʼS UNLIKELY, ONE GETS THE SENSE THAT DR. JOHN POURED A DRINK, LIT A CIGARETTE, CRACKED HIS KNUCKLES AND JUST STARTED TO PLAY. IT IS THIS CHARMING SALOON QUALITY THAT MAKES BRIGHTEST SMILE SO SPECIAL.” - ERIC SNIDER (JAZZIZ, 1984)

Upon the release of The Brightest Smile in Town, the reviews were effusive. Chicago critic Bill Knight’s comparisons to Fats Waller and James P. Johnson were high compliments indeed. Downbeat’s Jim Roberts called the playing “graceful”; noting that the LP had a broader scope than its predecessor. Jazz Times’ Rhodes Spedale summarized: “He’s never been in better form than here.”

We kept in touch over the years. Mac was always generous and encouraging. Little did we know when The Brightest Smile in Town was released, what accolades lay ahead for Mac Rebennack and Dr. John. From the innovative guitar triumph “Storm Warning” on the Rex label in 1959, to his 2012 Grammy-winning Locked Down album, Mac’s musical light shone brightly for seven decades. We were fortunate he chose to play for us. I’m sure he’d say that he was lucky too.

Katharine Whalen of Squirrel Nut Zippers fame, makes a triumphant return with her Jazz Squad featuring Austin Riopel on guitar, Danny Grewen on trombone, and the great Griffanzo on piano. This time the chanteuse delivers an entire album of breezy west coast jazz sounds in the form of a tribute to Chet Baker.

It was around 1996 when Katharine Whalen first made her grand entrance onto culture’s collective radar as the sultry, yet effervescent voice of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, where she remained until their initial disbandment around the turn of the century. In addition to the Zippers putting dixieland jazz on the pop charts in the 1990s, they sneakily introduced an unsuspecting "alternative" crowd to jazz music. Her cultural impact was also felt when she voiced the song "You You You You You" a standout track from Stephin Merritt's (The Magnetic Fields) project titled The 6ths. That song would also find its way into commercials and the film Pieces of April.

After recording one solo album for Mammoth Records shortly after leaving the Zippers, Whalen stepped out of the public eye. However, she’s remained very much in the spotlight of one unique small town; Hillsborough, NC, which has been referred to as Twin Peaks meets Northern Exposure. It’s a surreal literary, liberal Mayberry. If you find yourself in this Southern portal, you can find Katharine Whalen's Jazz Squad playing monthly in a cocktail bar appropriately named Yonder. On most nights, the Modern Harmonic staff is in attendance. Katharine's Squad is the always–stellar crew of trombone player

Danny Grewen, guitarist

Austin Riopel, and the colorful Griffanzo on piano.

JANA MILA CHAMELEON

When the Amsterdam singer-songwriter Jana Mila (pronounced Yah-nuh MEElah) began writing a song called “Chameleon,” she thought she was writing about someone else—a friend who seemed to be changing her colors to please other people. “But the more I lived with the song, the more I felt like I was writing about myself,” she admits. “Doesn’t everybody try to reflect other people? Don’t I change my own colors in order to be accepted? Especially when you’re young, you can lose yourself in other people if you don’t know who you are.”

That is the central idea behind her debut album, also titled Chameleon, which introduces Mila as an artist deeply committed to self-reckoning and self-possession. Our innate desire to belong and to be loved can lead to a kind of self-annihilation, making us strangers to ourselves. Writing songs is her means of finding and sustaining her identity.“The album is a conversation with myself, a way of getting to know myself better. There are little fears woven into every lyric, but there’s also advice to myself. I’m writing to find a part of myself that has some wisdom.”

Musically, Mila is the best kind of chameleon. The album draws from a wild array of sources, entertaining new ideas on every song: dusty Laurel Canyon folk on “It’s True,” catchy Nashville country on “Let Me In,” driving ‘70s rock on “I Wasn’t Gonna.” She puts her stamp on every note, turning those fears into an album of remarkable confidence, eloquence, and power. Chameleon is a self-portrait rendered in vibrant detail.

“One of the most contextually important collections of the genre.” Pitchfork,

9/10

Strut proudly presents a special edition repress of the groundbreaking ‘Nigeria 70’ compilation, now available on translucent green vinyl 3LP to celebrate the label’s 25th Anniversary.

First released in 2001, Nigeria 70 was a pioneering compilation that delved deeply into Lagos' vibrant music scene, where local artists blended highlife and traditional rhythms with soul, funk, rock, and jazz While Western audiences were already acquainted with Fela Kuti, this album highlighted other influential Nigerian musicians and bandleaders of the '70s: Joni Haastrup, Peter King, Segun Bucknor, Bala Miller, Blo, King Sunny Ade, Tunji Oyelana, and many more Subsequent volumes continued to explore the rich landscape of Afrobeat, juju, funk, and soul, unearthing a treasure trove of Nigerian tracks

‘Nigeria 70: The Definitive Story of 1970’s Funky Lagos’ showcases the vibrant diversity of the Lagos scene, reflecting the eclectic musical influences of the time. The compilation includes elements of psychedelic rock, from the heavily fuzzed-out sounds of Ofo & the Black Company's "Allah Wakbarr" to BLO's hauntingly serene "Chant to Mother Earth." The influence of late 1970s and early 80s disco can be heard in tracks like Joni Haastrup's 1977 "Greetings" and Shina Williams & His African Percussionists' 1984 electro-funk track "Agboju Logun," all while maintaining a strong Afrobeat foundation

Beloved by collectors and dancefloor enthusiasts, Nigeria 70 is rich with soul, humanity, and a broad spectrum of the region's musical talent It has inspired a new wave of labels and releases, introducing the 1970s Lagos scene to a new generation of soul, funk, and dance music fans

This special edition of ‘Nigeria 70: The Definitive Story of 1970’s Funky Lagos’ features the original artwork and liner notes, pressed on translucent green vinyl across 3LPs.

STEVE WYNN MAKE IT RIGHT

OUT AUGUST 30th 2024 ON FIRE RECORDS

The brand-new solo album from The Dream Syndicate’s Steve Wynn, released in tandem with his memoir. Make It Right is a commentary between literal and metaphorical ruminating – a dialogue between memoirist and musician - a vulnerable, more reflective Wynn than previously heard

‘Make It Right’ features notable contributions from Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Vicki Peterson (The Bangles), Chris Schlarb (Psychic Temple), Emil Nikolaisen (Serena Maneesh), Linda Pitmon (The Baseball project) and a cast of dozens

“I wrote and recorded these songs in tandem with working on “I Wouldn’t Say It If It Wasn’t True,” my memoir which comes out on Jawbone Press the same week as “Make It Right,” my first solo album since 2010. With each chapter, I would get ideas for songs inspired by the deep dive into my past and vice versa. The reflections became intertwined after a while, a mutual commentary between literal and metaphorical ruminating. It was a dialogue between the memoirist and the musician, a one-man Q&A, a gentle volley in the tennis court of my mind. 40-love, game, set and match.”

Although ‘Make It Right’ isn’t autobiographical, it begins with Santa Monica - the city and boulevard where he was born and concludes with “Roosevelt Avenue”, the main thoroughfare of the Queen’s neighbourhood in New York City that he calls home today.

Wynn will also be touring across the UK, Europe & the USA this Autumn in support of the release which promises to be a one-man show blending songs that inspired by the book along with a narrative structure of readings and storytelling

Attending college in Nashville, TN in 2015, Scott Hermo never really pictured himself as a full-time musician when writing and recording songs in various bedrooms. There was no plan, direction or goal. Yet meeting friends John Lewandowski, Tiger Adams, and Noah Miller changed all of that when the songs started to take more form with energy and live drums. Suddenly, there was a live band and like-minded folks with a similar outlook and collective goal to make the best music possible, for no one but themselves. Before ever even playing a show, they nished their debut album in yet another bedroom.

After word of mouth spread, a band was formed so they could play the shows they were offered. --- and with that came a love for playing shows, meeting musicians, digesting more bands, and perfecting their craft. Over the next few years, John, Tiger, Noah + countless others moved on, but Scott kept the band going with a rotating cast of over 20 musicians — always friends — who were available and shared the love of the music. And in that rotating cast, Scott met Emma Willer who became a permanent addition to the band, with major contributions to their self titled and rst release, Goose Bumps, released November 17th 2015.

On Goose Bumps, Connecticut's Boyscott present ten upbeat tracks that forge together elements of surf rock and bedroom pop. Weaving the supple sounds of yore into the techniques of today, Boyscott's distinct bedroom-recorded bops betray the limitations of their modest studio situation with a sonic depth not commonly associated with lo- projects.

VIVA HINDS

STREET DATE: 9/6/2024

GENRE: ALTERNATIVE / INDIE / ROCK

OVERVIEW

A rollercoaster four years since the release of their last album, Hinds have returned, back in their original line-up of co-founders, co-vocalists, co-guitarists and co-songwriters Ana Perrote and Carlotta Cosials, and totally re-energised with their triumphant and strongest record yet, VIVA HINDS. Recorded in rural France, produced by Pete Robertson (The Vaccines, beabadoobee), engineered by the GRAMMY-nominated Tom Roach and mixed by the Grammy-winning Caesar Edmunds (The Killers, Wet Leg), VIVA HINDS is a glorious technicolour return, packed full of trademark Hinds energy. Alongside the joyful first single “Coffee” there are the band’s first ever features, with Beck on “Boom Boom Back” and Grian Chatten (of Fontaines DC) on “Stranger”, as well as two Spanishlanguage tracks in “En Forma” and “Mala Vista”.

“Hinds are vibrant and infectious on ‘Boom Boom Back,’ and a feature from Beck only adds to the party. It’s the perfect summer anthem” - Stereogum “The perfect comeback record, the track melts together Hinds’ blistering garage-pop sound with subtle psychedelic aspects, and bvs from Beck.”

- Clash

“The band’s return is one worth celebrating. And, given how good “Coffee” was earlier this year, it’s clear that Cosials and Perrote’s chemistry is at an all-time high.” - Paste

“Stunning”

—Gilles

Peterson,

BBC Radio 6 “Music has seldom sounded so life confirming.”
—Popmatters

Kosmos is the third full-length record for Luaka Bop from the uncategorizable Danish band of Jonathan Bremer (on acoustic bass) and Morten McCoy (on keys and tape delay). It is, as its name would suggest, a vibe:

“We decided to call it Kosmos,” Morten said, “because for us, it's this feeling of being able to transcend time and space and just be, which is a very important thing for humans. Even though it's quiet music, it's music that you're able to just dream: have your own dreams, your own inner images.”

In his 2023 review of Bremer/McCoy's sold-out residency at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, David Dyrholm of Politiken wrote:

“It is one of the most beautiful things you can imagine. The long sinewy fingers slide over the strings of the double bass and send deep tones into the room. The vibrations can be felt throughout the body. The piano chimes in, first with swinging dub, soon laid back, calmly, in broken chords and with a melody seasoned with the blue tones on which both American jazz and Nordic folk songs are based. Overwhelming.

Bremer/McCoy

are

for good reason one of the country's most popular duos.”

EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BREMER/M C COY

These Danes have been making music that defies categorization since 2012.

They started as a dub group, bringing their own sound system to shows.

Now their sound hovers between jazz, ambient, and dub, with contemplative, propulsive melodies that capture the Nordic woods they play in.

Kosmos follows Natten (2021), which the SF Chronicle called, “celestial,” and “a mighty salve”—and the Taz (DE) said, “you can get lost in these songs and still never be lost.”

Utopia (2019) gained them a cult following in the U.S. and a roster of notable fans, including Nils Frahm and Gilles Peterson. In 2024, they'll hit the road, touring Scandinavia, Germany, France, and other far corners of Northern Europe, continuing their extensive touring, including select shows in the U.S. in 2025.

STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 6, 2024

This is going to be the scariest spoken word record you’ve ever heard. We’re not joking…and neither is Vincent Price. The star of such horror classics as House of Wax, The Abominable Dr. Phibes, and Theatre of Blood (and, of course, narrator of Michael Jackson’s Thriller video) can barely hide his delight while he takes his audience through a graphic and occasionally grisly history lesson in witchcraft from the Bible through the Middle Ages, the Spanish Inquisition, and Nazi Germany. Then, accompanied by occasional eerie, abstract electronic music, Price’s sinister satisfaction only mounts as he provides instruction in the dark arts, with such tracks as “How to Make a Pact with the Devil” and “Curses, Spells, Charms.” It’s all in good fun, of course…or is it? The mysterious writer of the script, one Terry d’Oberoff, has only one other credit to his name: as the “mascot” of an early ‘70s band called…wait for it…Black Magic.

This 1969 double-LP release has long been coveted by collectors of the curious and macabre, and for its first reissue in over 50 years, we are giving it the Real Gone treatment, reproducing the gatefold jacket and the full-size, 8-page booklet that accompanied some copies. It’s a combination history textbook and how-to manual in witchcraft, with a title page depicting a particularly unsettling spell called “The Hand of Glory” involving the severed, salted, and dried hand of a convicted felon. We are releasing this one-of-a-kind album in two ways: on clear with orange “pumpkin” swirl vinyl, and, for independent record stores only, on black brick “gates of hell” vinyl limited to 666 hand-numbered copies.

Happy Halloween.

Sounds and Dance Music (Limited Coke Clear with Yellow “Serpentine” Swirl Vinyl Edition)

After years of visiting graveyards, combing through haunted houses, and pursuing (heh heh) dead ends, we finally tracked down the rights to the legendary Frankie Stein and His Ghouls series! Why did we risk life, limb, and livelihood to find these records? Well, first of all, long-time Real Goners know we LOVE these campy ‘60s takes on horror rock—witness our previous macabre moves into the Zacherle, Munsters and Groovie Goolies franchises. But there’s something extra special about these Frankie Stein and His Ghouls records. You wouldn’t think that Halloween records released by a subsidiary (Power Records) of a children’s specialty label (Peter Pan Records) would be so…er…visceral, but these records are definitely the most out there of their kind. And there might be a reason for that…you see, it has been revealed that the Power label enlisted the aid of some very, very interesting musicians for some of its projects. For instance, the imprint’s 1966 album Batman and Robin by The Sensational Guitars of Dan and Dale was actually produced by Tom Wilson of Bob Dylan, Velvet Underground, and Mothers of Invention fame—and the band was made up free jazz legend Sun Ra and members of The Blues Project! Which has led to all sorts of speculation about who Frankie Stein and His Ghouls actually were; among the names bandied about are guitarist Duane Eddy, jazz saxophonist Max Greger, and, yes, Sun Ra and the Blues Project again. At any rate, prepare yourself for frenetic rock-and-twist workouts punctuated by deranged howls and shattering sound effects. And with a back story like this, it’s no wonder original copies of these albums sell for downright horrifying prices…here come the last two for a truly fiendish finale!

FRANKIE STEIN AND HIS GHOULS: Monster MELODIES

(Limited Radioactive Green Vinyl Edition)

Sporting an all-star crew of movie monsters on the front cover, this 1965 slab from the vinyl vault features perhaps our favorite song title from the entire Frankie Stein series: “Ain’t Got No Body.” Though “Ghoulish Heart” is not far behind! Never reissued in any format, here in radioactive green vinyl limited to 900 copies!

THE DOUG CARN TRIO: The Doug

Carn Trio

(All-Analog Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 6, 2024

Keyboardist/composer Doug Carn was the biggest star on the legendary Black Jazz Records label, with four releases to his credit (all reissued by us at Real Gone Music), and remains a touchstone for spiritual jazz fans and musicians alike. But very, very few folks have heard his debut record, cut for the venerable Savoy label back in 1969. In fact, it’s so rare that we couldn’t even find a copy to use for artwork, so, with Doug’s help, we enlisted his daughter Eroniffa Ibrahim to create illustrations for our reissue based on the original cover photos. But you know what we did find? That’s right…the original master tapes! So, not only is this the first LP reissue for The Doug Carn Trio, but it’s an all-analog edition to boot, pressed at Gotta Groove Records with their proprietary GrooveCoated stampers to minimize high-frequency loss with each successive pressing. And, we’ve added an insert with liner notes by Aaron Cohen based on an exclusive interview with the man himself. As for the music, it’s a tight organ trio set that starts cooking right from the get-go with a groovin’ cover of Gus Cannon’s “Walk Right In,” which became a folk hit for The Rooftop Singers. Carn’s fluid, forward-thinking playing anticipates Larry Young’s future keyboard forays, and originals like “Butter from the Duck” and “Yna Yna’s Delight” presage the compositional prowess he flashed on the Black Jazz releases (note: that’s Don Hales on guitar, not Gary Starling as credited on the original record). The opening salvo from a scintillating career, finally available again!

tom verlaine: songs and other things

(Teal Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 6, 2024

The true test of originality for any musician comes when you hear an instrument being played and you instantly know who’s playing it. For electric guitarists, certainly Hendrix qualifies; Page and Clapton, too. Maybe Eddie Van Halen before the legion of imitators. You probably have your own list, but to us, standing toe-to-toe (or pick-to-pick) with those legends is Television guitarist and solo artist Tom Verlaine. His self-taught, jazz-influenced style, largely devoid of effects, and vibrato tone (oh, that tone!) makes any Verlaine solo unmistakably a Verlaine solo. That he was quite an accomplished, idiosyncratic songwriter is just a bonus. Real Gone Music is very, very proud to announce that we have arranged with the Verlaine estate to release Tom’s last three solo albums on LP; Songs and Other Things was the last record he released, in the same year (2006) as the all-instrumental Around. As the title indicates, this was indeed a return to lyrics and vocals, the first record with “songs” since 1990’s The Wonder (although the first track, “A Parade in Littleton”—one of the “Other Things”—is a low-key, funky instrumental that would have been home on a late Talking Heads album). The time off clearly allowed Verlaine to build up a strong cache of compositions, with “Nice Actress” and “The Earth Is in the Sky” among the highlights. The record also marks a welcome return of Verlaine’s enigmatic lyrics, which as always prompt head scratching while somehow making intuitive sense. But in the end, it’s the amazing guitar work—ably supported by Fred Smith of Television fame and Jay Dee Daugherty of The Patti Smith Group among others—that elevates Songs and Other Things to essential status, worthy of its exalted position as the final release of Tom Verlaine’s career. Bassist and original engineer Patrick Derivaz has mastered the album for its vinyl debut; Verlaine’s long-time partner Jutta Koether contributes notes. Teal vinyl pressing!

CANDIDO: Dancin’ and Prancin’

STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 6, 2024

As the man who basically brought the conga into the modern age with his innovative multipercussion set-ups and tunable congas, and as a former member of Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Kenton’s bands, Cándido Camero Guerra a.k.a. Candido already had a long and storied career when he cut Dancin’ and Prancin’ for the Salsoul label in 1979 at the age of 58. So, you might have been excused at the time for assuming this was just another case of an old-timer trying to cash in on the disco craze, right? But you would have been very, very wrong…the record was pure brilliance, as the infusion of Candido’s Latin conga beats into the disco-fied 4 x 4 syncopated rhythm proved irresistible, revolutionizing the sound of underground disco while pointing the way to the house music to come. Indeed, both “Jingo” (an unstoppable version of the Olatunji classic) and “Thousand Finger Man” are still DJ favorites. Speaking of DJs, we’re putting this one out on black vinyl, perfect for queueing up and spinning. for A must for any dance music library!

STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 6, 2024

Even though it came out on a major label, this record sells for hundreds of dollars if you can find it at all (we know…we paid for a copy), and it’s no wonder… it’s the perfect blend of raw R&B passion and smooth, sophisticated soul production. First, the passion part… Willie Tee was a New Orleans pianist and singer best known for recording a series of burnin’ 45s (some cut for Harold Battiste’s short-lived AFO label) during the ‘60s. I’m Only a Man was Willie’s album debut, cut for Capitol in 1970, and he brought the same deep-seated intensity to the record that he did his singles. The difference was, for I’m Only a Man, Willie’s warm, raspy voice was lovingly bathed in spectacular arrangements by H. B. Barnum and produced by the great David Axelrod. Strings, brass, xylophone, bluesy guitar licks, and a funky rhythm section are all percolating inside this record’s grooves, with a daring choice of material that ranges from Cannonball Adderley’s “Walk Tall” to the Bacharach-David nugget “Reach Out for Me” to the self-penned highlights “Mirror” and “Bring On the Heartaches” to the album closer “People” from Funny Girl. Capitol wasn’t known for breaking soul acts at the time, which may explain why this record remains a cult classic; we’re happy to give it the exposure it deserves, with a purple vinyl pressing limited to 1000 copies. Individually, Kronos Quartet and Sun Ra are two of the most groundbreaking names in contemporary music. The former is the legendary San Francisco-based string quartet that laid a blueprint for what concert music could become, working with the likes of John Cage, Tanya Tagaq, and Astor Piazzolla. The latter was a singular jazz and avant-garde bandleader, as well as a philosopher and poet, who honed an extraordinary strain of cosmic experimental music from the 1950s until his ascension in 1993. As a capstone to Kronos Quartet’s 50th anniversary, the group has joined forces with the Red Hot Organization for the new album Outer Spaceways Incorporated: Kronos Quartet & Friends Meet Sun Ra. The Debut Works by Cass McCombs Finally Back in Print from September 6 2024

4AD are proud to be reissuing the first three records by unparalleled contemporary American songwriter Cass McCombs. Released by the label outside North America in the early-2000s (Monitor released Stateside), his debut EP (Not The Way) and first two albums (A and PREfection) have all been out of print on vinyl since and are now highly-sought after titles.

Twenty plus years on and 4AD are making all three records available again worldwide, having remastered them all at Abbey Road. The vinyl editions are being pressed on black vinyl and will come in their original sleeves with an OBI strip and new printed inner art added. CD versions of both albums are also being released.

Not The Way

“Heavy-lidded tunes that sound like they were recorded post-bender, pre-afterglow.” Alternative Press

Cass McCombs’s 2002 debut EP Not The Way, a song-suite of narcotic lullabies, acutely observed lyrics, and preternatural hooks, introduced the world to a gifted songwriter possessed with a fully-formed vision and mission.

His first release, the self-recorded 6-track EP was originally released on CD and was subsequently pressed by 4AD in the UK as a double 7” a few years later. Now finally getting the 12” pressing that will make collectors happy, this version also marks the first time Not The Way has been released on vinyl in North America.

Pitchfork

With 2005’s flawless second LP PREfection, Cass McCombs entered the pantheon of singer-songwriters dealing in a signature thematic and sonic universe studded with effortless catchiness, singular mood, and literary lyrics of rare distinction.

The Deslondes Roll It Out

The Deslondes Roll It Out

The Deslondes are a five-piece group of dudes from New Orleans. The band splits up songwriting and lead vocal duties among its five members, continuing its democratic ethos and musical versatility. Multiple members have released solo recordings between their sophomore release, Hurry Home (2016) and their previous release Ways & Means (2022). Now, with their latest record, Roll It Out the band continues to build on their inventive take on New Orleans country and R&B. Roll It Out finds the band leaning on the countryfolk of their debut along with the sometimes-psychedelic, electrified gospel-soul sound of their previous records The sound will continue to draw comparisons to the country-funkiness of The Band, Link Wray, and others but Roll It Out is the sound of a band that understands the history of American music, while embracing their own contemporary approach.

LUKE WINSLOW-KING FLASH-A-MAGIC

Bloodshot is proud to welcome acclaimed folk-blues singer/songwriter Luke Winslow-King back to the label with Flash-A-Magic.

The new album contines Luke’s world-wandering evolution, from Michigan to New Orleans to Spain, absorbing and integrating his experiences and collaborations to create something unique and new.

Flash-A-Magic is co-produced by Tuscan Slide Guitar Maestro Roberto Luti—a founding member of the Playing For Change band who has collaborated with legends such as Taj Mahal, Keb Mo, Keith Richards, Ringo Starr, Dr. John and accumulated over 100 million plays on YouTube. His unorthodox, angular and evocative slide guitar style is based on Mississippi and Chicago blues and is infused by soul and African roots traditions and perfectly compliments Winslow-King’s musical ambitions.

The duo’s partnership reaches back more than 15 years to it’s beginnings on the streets of New Orleans, and has taken them to dozens of countries around the world. Their approach to rural and hill country blues contains a certain reverence, a respect, and a bittersweetness not often heard in the modern day. The new album features several co-writes and showcases the unique style and dynamic synergy they have fostered.

Claude Fontaine La Mer

There is a mythical island that exists only in Claude Fontaine’s imagination. It’s somewhere off the coast of France but the trade winds blow a soothing tropical breeze. The inhabitants converse in an alluring mélange of French and Portuguese. The air is fragrant and sweet. The water is the color of Lapis Lazuli. The stone citadels of this invisible city are scarred by time, but the natives exist in a velvet eternity.

If you wander at night amidst the starlit cobblestone roads, you might chance upon the official house band of this halcyon offshore republic. A mysterious ensemble fronted by an American girl with a French name singing a romantic collection of spells assembled under the name, La Mer.

With their dulcet fusion of ‘60s French ye-ye pop, slinky Studio One reggae, and liminal Brazilian tropicalia, Claude Fontaine’s songs embody the best kept dreams of a globally connected world. The second album from the Los Angeles artist reflects the dream of creating the soundtrack for this utopia by the sea.

“The island was a complete figment of my imagination, but it’s where I found myself living while writing the songs,” Fontaine says. “A fantasy place where I could be surrounded by the people I wanted to be around, the people I already loved, and a love that I had never had. The songs felt like prayers or a manifestation about what I was hoping to put forward. ”

Released on Innovative Leisure, La Mer is a mesmerizing portal. It’s impossible for it to exist outside of the modern moment, but it floats on the gilded dust of the past. At times, Fontaine channels Jane Birkin as backed by Jorge Ben. Francois Hardy locked into sonic reverie with Mulatu Astatke, or Margo Guryan making lovers rock.

None of this is a happy accident. For her second opus, Fontaine assembled some of the most gifted musicians of the last five decades. First and foremost is her co-writer and producer, the multi-platinum Grammy-Award winning Lester Mendez, whose resume includes everyone from Grace Jones and Baaba Maal to Shakira and Nelly Furtado.

As with Fontaine’s self-titled first album, the legendary Tony Chin appears on guitar, bringing the orphic tones expected from someone who has played with some of the greatest reggae musicians of all-time (King Tubby, Dennis Brown, Lee Perry, Jackie Mittoo, Max Romeo, Sly & Robbie). On bass, there’s Ronnie McQueen, one of the co-founders of Steel Pulse. Sergio Mendes’ percussionist, Gibi Dos Santos, supplies propulsive locomotion. So does Ziggy Marley’s drummer, Rock Deadrick. And that’s just the abridged list of storied instrumentalists who appear on La Mer.

In the middle of the axis mundi lies Fontaine, building an orchestral escape to paradise. If her debut found her exploring a newfound love of Jamaican and Brazilian music, the passage of time has allowed for an enhanced familiarity and intimacy. Bandcamp called the first record “a spiritual sequel to Serge Gainsbourg’s late ’70s Jamaican sabbatical…the kind of dimly lit hideaway where Hunter S. Thompson might have guzzled Cuba Libres.” And her latest experiment in timeless rhythms yields even richer and more vibrant results.

“I write love songs. That’s what compels me,” Fontaine says. “I’m needlessly inspired by love, but in a deeper way than just pure romance. As you evolve, your understanding of the greater themes of life evolve too.”

On “Vaquero,” Fontaine spins the tale of a gaucho, a hardened man on horseback, a tortured soul who refuses love and sweats out his pain from the isolation of a chaparral-strewn ranch. “Love the Way You Love” is a prayer for an ardor then unrealized, but later fulfilled – a levitating hymn of golden sand and coral blue waters, heartache with only one antidote. “Green Ivy Tapestry” was written on an old mahogany bed in an ancient hotel room in London, in which the enchanted beauty of this tiny chamber symbolized the walled off possibilities within.

With a polychromatic lilt, Fontaine sings in English, French, and Portuguese. But regardless of which language is used, the translations tap into a universal Esperanto. What’s matters most is how welcome and inviting these songs feel. They tap into a communal experience that unites cultures – a sensibility nurtured by travel and crate-digging, and produced with the help of pioneers of these forms.

La Mer is a hidden treasure, a dusty gem waiting to be discovered in an attic or right now, at your convenience. It’s a vulnerable work that taps into a profound wellspring of imagination, unbeholden to trends or popular whim. Something romantic in the essentialist sense of the world, one that opens you up to a new realm of possibilities and wonder. Something that allows you to close your eyes and effortlessly time travel through the past, present, and future. A trip to the pristine island of the mind, but one made immaculately real.

"A stunning album and one of the year's highlights already" - DJ MAG (9/10*)

“If you’re looking for a real blast of aural sunshine you’ll not find anything better” - CRACK

"A love song to classic reggae and Brazilian music, honoring that feeling of finding a home away from home" - LA TIMES

"American singer who channels classic rocksteady reggae and Tropicalia influences on her retrofitted tunes of heartache" - ALL MUSIC

"Mesmerizing debut album ... The record is neatly divided between lilting reggae and Brazilian-style pop, and, while there is nothing new about a modern singer performing those styles individually, it is unusual to combine them in such a coolly seductive way." - LA WEEKLY

"Her airy, yé-yé-style vocals make the dub and rocksteady on the album’s first half feel like a spiritual sequel to Serge Gainsbourg’s late ’70s Jamaican sabbatical, while its final five tracks of retro bossa nova evoke seductive, after-dark, if-these-walls-could-talk lounges—the kind of dimly lit hideaway where Hunter S. Thompson might have guzzled Cuba Libres. What we’re left with is a highly personal pocket guide to multiple, timeless musical styles"BANDCAMP

Release date 6th September 2024

Japanese vibraphonist and marimba player Masayoshi Fujita returns with Migratory , his masterful new solo album, where his sonic explorations into the unknown continue.

In 2019, after 13 years of living in Berlin, Fujita returned to his native Japan with his wife and their three children, fulfilling his life-long dream of living and composing music in the midst of nature. The family found their new home in the mountain hills along the coast of Kami-cho, Hyōgo, three hours west of Kyoto.

Once settled in, Fujita spent his time turning an old kindergarten into his own music studio, Kebi Bird Studio, which became the birthplace of Migratory. On his new album, the composer and producer masterfully reimagines and mesmerises with his trademark sounds of vibraphone, and resumes his experimentation with the marimba and synthesisers that he first incorporated on his 2021 album, Bird Ambience, which followed the release of his acclaimed vibraphone triptych: Stories (2012), Apologues (2015) and Book of Life (2018).

On Fujita’s ever-evolving list of collaborators, Migratory introduces vocals from Moor Mother on ‘Our Mother’s Lights’ and Hatis Noit on ‘Higurashi’, as well as shō and saxophone to its soundscapes. Whilst at a music residency in Stockholm in 2021, Fujita met Swedish shō player Mattias Hållsten. Although it was a brief encounter, the two musicians stayed in touch. During a visit to Japan, Hållsten stopped by the studio and played on three of the tracks, including the alluring album closer ‘Yodaka’, exceeding Fujita’s own expectations.

Another collaborator, American poet Moor Mother asked Fujita to contribute vibraphone to her upcoming album, and in return lent her powerful voice to the Migratory’s centrepiece, Our Mother’s Lights “it carries a kind of African and Asian vibe, a perfect match for the energy of the piece,” he adds.

As with Bird Ambience, Fujita continues to be inspired by our feathered friends. The album’s title, Migratory, originates from an image that came to him of migratory birds, travelling somewhere between Africa, East Asia and Japan, imagining them hearing the music from the land underneath, and how their point of view of the world from above blurs the boundaries of music and land. Expanding on this, Fujita says: “these ideas and images were inspired by my experiences of living abroad and returning to my homeland, as well as by the artists featured on this album who also somehow travelled or lived in other countries across the boundaries, and being influenced by the music of other lands but at the same time somehow led to their roots”

Masayoshi’s parents too made a life abroad in Thailand for over 15 years. After returning to Japan, Fujita’s mother passed away in the beginning of 2023. So he invited his father to come for a visit, to spend time with him and his grandchildren. A lifelong musician in his own right, the two of them soon found themselves holed up in Kebi Bird Studio. Fujita senior had brought his saxophone, which he played on top of the then unfinished recordings, resulting in three breathtaking pieces. The slow jazz-tinged ‘Blue Rock Thrush’ stands out, with the saxophone and marimba blending harmoniously reaching new artistic heights.

Nature has always been a source of inspiration for Fujita, and on Migratory it takes centre stage. You can hear it on the album’s peaceful and considered field recordings, but most importantly, Masayoshi highlights – “nature is there as the image to be evoked by the listener from the music.” On the record’s sleeve notes, written by renowned novelist and travel writer Pico Iyer, we learn about the Japan that he hears as he sits down and listens to the music. It educates and encapsulates us, in the same way Fujita’s imaginary birds vividly depict the essence of musical migration.

The Return Of Tomorrow is Fu Manchu’s first new album in 6 years, and they made sure that it was worth the wait. Their 14th album is their 1st double LP of new material and it was conceived of as a vinyl listening experience The first LP features 7 songs in their iconic heavy fuzz sound including the first single, “Hands Of The Zodiac” and the relentlessly catchy “Loch Ness Wrecking Machine.” The second LP sees the band mellowing out with 6 slower tempo jams including the synth inflected “Solar Baptized” and the title track Both LPs are 45RPM for the thickest possible sound. CD listeners need not worry, as this version of the album was mastered specifically for the format.

Like the band’s most recent album, Clone Of The Universe, and the band’s 3 part Fu30 EP series, The Return Of Tomorrow was recorded at The Racket Room in Santa Ana, California by Jim Monroe (Adolescents, Ignite) and co-produced with Fu Manchu. This new color variant 2LP is packaged in a glossy gatefold jacket with printed sleeves featuring live photos of the band and includes one Blue colored LP and one White colored LP.

Gnod –Spot Land

Rocket Recordings

GNOD, the ever-transient psychedelic musical unit from northern England with over 15 years and dozens of releases under their belt, return in 2024 with a recalibrated sound and a new sense of freedom. Spot Land’s five songs are tender and detailed, unfolding slowly with wistful guitar textures, brushed drums and interjections of lap steel, piano and kalimba. As founder member Paddy Shine says, the results sound like old GNOD and new GNOD at the same time. On the face of it, Spot Land is a big step away from the intense, loud, sludgy offerings found on the group’s more recent studio albums, such as 2022’s Hexen Valley – nevertheless, these too are heady fogs to lose yourself in, with on-record personnel starting at different points and meeting on the same wavelength. Its exploratory sense might make seasoned GNOD heads think of 2014 triple LP Infinity Machines, or really early oddities like The Somnambulist’s Tale from 2008, but you can also jump in right here if needs be because Spot Land has its own unique vibe too.

The album was recorded in a Rochdale mill over four days in August 2023, with Paddy handling all the production and mixing – the first time he’s been fully in the hot seat for any GNOD release. He’s also the only member to feature on each of the five tracks, with others coming and going in suitably informal manner. Everyone – Paddy, fellow GNOD founder Chris Haslam, Alex Macarte, Raikes Parade and Al Wilson – plays at least two instruments over these 40 minutes.

All Wild Things Are Shy is the final studio album from beloved singer-songwriter Richard Laviolette, a powerful collection completed in the final months of his life.

As with much of Richard’s earlier work (including 2 previous You’ve Changed Records releases: All Of Your Raw Materials (2010) and Taking The Long Way Home (2017)), the songs on All Wild Things Are Shy confront death and mortality bravely and directly, while bursting with guts and glory, with love, justice, honesty, and a beautiful and fundamental belief in the ability of music to bring people together. This is an immediate, essentialist, community-grounded vision of folk-based DIY rock music, both specifically intimate and mortally epic.

Constantines singer Bry Webb and Steph Yates of Cots share guest lead vocals on the title track; long-time collaborator Jessy Bell Smith (of the Skydiggers) can be heard in powerful and sympathetic voice throughout.

With the rapid acceleration of Huntington’s Disease symptoms compounded by complex long-term health issues, Richard chose to receive medical assistance in dying (MAID) on September 5, 2023. We miss him dearly.

All Wild Things Are Shy is available in 2x12” (45 RPM) black vinyl housed in a gatefold jacket, or on deluxe CD. Both formats contain full handwritten lyrics.

Nathan Micay returns with his soundtrack to the second season of acclaimed HBO/BBC Drama Industry - which both compliments the TV show, and excels as standalone art.

Industry gives an insider's view of the blackbox of high finance following a group of young bankers as they forge their identities within the pressure cooker environment and sex and drug fueled blitz of international bank Pierpoint & Co's London office. Micay’s soundtrack echoes the spirit of Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel Jarre and the late, great Vangelis. Although his background is in the world of dance/techno scoring for TV/Film was a natural progression for the multi-instrumentalist:

As The Quietus highlighted “Micay’s strength as a composer and producer comes from how he keeps this narrative flowing”

“Industry season 2 has the best TV soundtrack of the year ” GQ “The Industry Season 2 Soundtrack Makes High Stakes Finance Sexy as Hell” Men's Health “Electrifying, visceral, immersive and intense” Daily Beast

In my experience, some albums simply wind up as a pair of psychic bookends. Music for Walks, the first Silver Scrolls album, began when I was taking classes in an analytic institute and would walk to class from my therapy office. I had the idea for an album that was simultaneously about the action of taking a walk and also made explicitly to listen to while on a walk. Around this same time I was introduced to the psychoanalytic work of Christopher Bollas and gravitated to his thoughts on the ‘receptive unconscious’ (which is in addition to repressed unconscious functions). In one chapter he wrote about how during leisure walks, the mind can float in and out of conscious awareness creating a reverie which receives generative associations fueling the receptive unconscious, the genesis of dreamwork and creativity. The daydreaming we do on leisure walks. This coalesced the whole project. While this conceptual thinking was integral, I didn’t forget that I was really ‘just’ making a rock record; riffs are king. That first Scrolls album was written and recorded in that (fill in the blank) time right before Covid with Brian Quast (more on him in a sec) and released into the void of that first Covid summer.

Fast-forward a few years to 2023. I wasn’t necessarily thinking about a bookend at that point in time, but as the tentative post-Covid re-entry progressed I found myself doing what I have done for years - sitting on the edge of my bed plunking out riffs and then trading them with Brian “BQ” Quast. I have been playing with BQ off and on for over a decade, a process that started with Polvo’s In Prism He is formidable, versatile and can seemingly do everything - he is the glue and the real musician in the group. Both Scrolls albums were recorded after one real ‘together’ practice and he was a lot of the reason why this was possible. Our styles just fit together, (including the one we like to call ‘Bread Zeppelin’). The easy and generative elements of our collaboration reemerged as we started recording again.

Back to bookends, that brings us to the second Silver Scrolls record, Mind Lines BQ and I once again joined forces to make an album that plants you firmly in your most rock feelings. All the rocks: Classic rock, psych-rock, indie rock, folk-rock, post rock, pre-rock. Rock and Roll High School all through Post-Graduate. Harkening back to Polvotimes, I enjoy when albums echo the experience of listening to the radio and hopefully Mind Lines can take the listener there as well. We recorded Mind Lines in a few places but the most *together* time was spent with our friend Greg Elkins in Raleigh. Greg is someone who in the olden days would likely be classified as a “producer”, but we feel he is effectively the third Scroll handling a lot of the segue-magic and what we call ‘interstitials’ (small connective pieces between songs).

I hope Mind Lines does what a band’s second record sets out to do: maintain continuity and demonstrate new thoughts. To that end - and in the same cosmic vein as Polvo’s bookends In Prism and Siberia - I think Mind Lines makes a good bookend to this chapter of the Silver Scrolls experience. To keep the bookend ties consistent, the album’s title is a nod to Bollas’ concept of ‘ramifying lines’ of thought (likened to train tracks coming together at junctions) in the unconscious mind where associations are born and raised.

SALES POINTS

- The second album from the duo consisting of Dave Brylawski (Polvo, Idyll Swords, Black Taj) and Brian Quast (Polvo, The Cherry Valence, BQs, Vanilla Trainwreck). Another slab merging all sorts of rock –psych, 90s indie, math, classic – into a delicious slice. Ideal for fans of Polvo and any of the rock styles outlined above.

- 160g black or “Mental Clarity” red vinyl housed within a jacket bearing artwork by legendary gig poster artist Ron Liberti (with Bandcamp-enabled download).

- “These songs stretch out and travel their own highways and byways, at times sparking a connection with the chiming guitars of Murray Street-era Sonic Youth, at others getting into a moody drum-machine driven groove.” Aquarium Drunkard

- “Gnarled and inherently rhythmic, the songs beat like an internal metronome, but spiral off into vibrating tangents of sound, both tense and amniotic.” Raven Sings The Blues

- “Each song is already beautifully suited for taking your thoughts on a journey, so the moment when you slip your earphones on and walk out your door, your mind is already miles away thanks to the band’s heavy beats and hypnotic guitar solos.” Record Crates United

- “Quast’s drumming is especially intricate and powerful. Hell, ‘Old Solace’ has what I’d describe as a bona fide drum solo in it!! Brylawski follows suit and is able to switch time signatures and launch into epic guitar heroics in a blink of an eye.” Down In The Bunker

Peel Dream Magazine Rose Main Reading Room

le under: dream pop experimental indie pop pop

Info:

Rose Main Reading Room, the fourth full length by Peel Dream Magazine, is a lush, inviting headphones record; the kind of album made to accompany city bus rides and rainy-day solo trips to accidental destinations. The band, whose name nods to the BBC Radio 1 legend John Peel — arbiter of all things underground, quality, and (it must be said) "cool" — has since its inception been a genre-hopping experiment, jumping from motorik krautrock to shoegaze and space age pop, and their newest work is a perfect starting point for the uninitiated, beckoning toward a newfound romance and nostalgia with their catchiest collection of songs to date.

Set to the backdrop of New York City and its towering landmarks — The American Museum of Natural History, Grand Central Station, and the like — songwriter Joseph Stevens weaves personal stories into the wider fabric of the natural world, touching on themes of instinct, animality, and evolution. On tracks such as “Central Park West” and “Migratory Patterns,” Stevens and his principal contributors, vocalist Olivia Babuka Black and multi-instrumentalist Ian Gibbs, evoke a woodland sound palette juxtaposed against drones and various electronics, like on side one closer “Gems and Minerals.”

Pre-release singles “Wish You Well” and “Lie In the Gutter” conjure the driving feel of the band’s earlier output, which often draws comparisons to Stereolab and Yo La Tengo, while songs like “Dawn” revel in arpeggiating woodwinds and mallets, recalling the wide-eyed contemporary classical of Steve Reich and Sufjan Stevens. Rose Main Reading Room also touches on Y2K indie pop nostalgia by incorporating breakbeats and acoustic guitar-driven ear candy, as heard on tracks like “Counting Sheep” and “Four Leaf Clover”.

Across its fteen songs, Rose Main Reading Room ultimately proposes a world of marvels and compelling complexity: “Oblast” cheekily prods at mutually assured destruction; “Ocean Life” explores the inniteness within ourselves; while “R.I.P. (Running in Place)” unpacks an all too familiar stagnation. It’s all part of, and crucial to, Rose Main Reading Room’s transportive power, ever reaching for the wonder and magic of the world we live in.

The Undreamt-of Centre is the fourth solo album by prolific Australian drummer/composer/producer Laurence Pike, an evocative, contemporary reimagining of the requiem mass.

The album draws on the sounds of modern classical music, Japanese environmental ambient music, fourth world electronics, free jazz and the choral traditions of Estonia, with particular influence from Tallinn-based composer Tonu Korvits. Produced in collaboration with the Vox Sydney Philharmonia Choir, conducted by Pike’s childhood friend, composer Sam Lipman and recorded in a 19th century Gothic church.

Laurence Pike on The Undreamt-of Centre:

I first had the thought of working with voices a number of years ago. I had the strange notion of making a requiem mass for drums, electronics and choir. It sat with me since then, until it felt the time was right to realise the idea.

Why a requiem? Initially I simply liked the idea of a structural format that had existed and been reimagined again and again over hundreds of years. Ultimately, it’s a ritual set to music. The processes and ecstatic outcomes of rituals, were something I had explored in making the Holy Spring album in 2019. I became interested in subverting the religious musical construct of a requiem into something far more contemporary, using language and sounds not readily associated with it. It also seemed a ready-made vehicle to explore the sound of a choir with my electro-acoustic drum kit performances. I had begun searching for a narrative structure or text that I might set a choir to, while not adhering to the text of a Latin mass. I began reading the poems of Rainer Maria Rilke, in particular his ‘Sonnets to Orpheus’, inspired by the classical Greek myth of Orpheus.

Live from Studio S2

The now iconic ‘Live from Studio S2’ memorizing performance gets a sought after limited BioVinyl Edition and features all four tracks from the session. First premiered on the Gondwana Records YouTube channel on Sunday March 28th 2021, it has since become a global success reaching a near 7 million views and counting and has earned Rani many more devoted fans.

"At the beginning of February 2021, I was invited by the Berlinale Film Festival to record a live set as a part of the EFM sessions which became the motivation to document this live performance.

I thought that bringing back my piano and equipment to the hall where I first recorded my live session videos for my debut album 'Esja' would be a nice idea and the right cinematic choice. This time, I wanted to use not only an upright piano, but also a grand piano and some other keyboards including a Prophet 08 synthesizer and a Roland stage piano

Studio S2 is one of the recording studios inside the Polish Radio building in Warsaw and used primarily for recording classical and film music. The hall is fully covered with light wood, which reminds me of other Radio Studios all around the world – like Funkhaus in Berlin. It felt very special to be in the hall again where we recorded the music video for "Glass", one of my most liked videos. There is a kind of intimacy when playing the little piano in this huge and also very high venue.

I decided to rearrange some of my favourite songs, which I have been performing live for years. The set starts with 'Hawaii Oslo', which is built on a piano loop, followed by 'Glass' with a new intro and outro and closing with 'Leaving' and 'Buka' – this time accompanied with new layers which change the mood and rhythmic pattern of both songs"

Portico Quartet / Hania Rani

Portico Quartet / Hania Rani

Portico Quartet / Hania Rani brings the singular Polish pianist and composer, Hania Rani, and East-London based widescreen minimalists, Portico Quartet, together for a unique collaboration.

The idea was simple, each artist would rework one of each other's tunes. The result is a beautiful collaborative work that feel less like straight forward remixes and more like a new recording that brings the two acts distinctive sound worlds to a new place.

The first track to be shared is Hania Rani - Nest (Portico Quartet remix), which finds Portico Quartet reworking a track from Hania's most recent album Home. Portico Quartet saxophonist and keyboardist Jack Wyllie says:

"We've been fans of Hania since her first album album Esja, so it was a pleasure to get to work with her. Our remix took fragments of her voice and piano, and from that we extrapolated and composed an almost entirely new piece of music. The result was (hopefully) that her sound world became another instrument in the band…"

Both releases are pressed on high quality black BioVinyl at Optimal in Germany for maximum sound quality, and strictly limited to 500 copies each.

Oracle Sisters Hydranism

Based in Paris, Oracle Sisters is composed of childhood friends Lewis Lazar and Christopher Willatt, and Finnish musician Julia Johansen At the tail end of 2020 amidst the pandemic and second lockdown, Oracle Sisters decamped to Hydra, Greece to write and record their debut album, Hydranism Recorded over the course of two months, the 11-track album reflects a world suspended in time between the future and the past, and embraces larger than life ballads, intimate folk songs and table thumping rousers spun with the silk of poetic reveries. Their debut album, Hydranism, was released in early 2023.

Sharing in the Spirit follows in this tradition and adds to Egge’s stellar reputation as one of our most talented and treasured singer-songwriters. Not only is it one of 2024’s best, its point of view, its grace, empathy, and warmth are a refreshing counterpoint to our chaotic and quickly judgmental and malevolent culture. Long may Ana Egge write, sing and create. We need her and more artists like her more than ever.” –

AMERICANA HIGHWAYS

“Unafraid to expose her vulnerabilities and confront her personal and political fears, Sharing in the Spirit is a testament to Ana Egge’s emotional depth. It’s a calming and thought-provoking listen that defies easy categorization, as is the case with her other recordings. This may be why Egge’s name is less widely known, as her music may be too unique for traditional folk or country music fans. This is another exciting gateway into the creativity of a hugely gifted artist, and it is well worth your investigation.” – LONESOME HIGHWAY
