Keeley Forsyth is a composer, singer and actor from Oldham in the north-west of England.

Nala Sinephro’s sophomore album, titled ‘Endlessness’, expands her scope from the inward journey of ‘Space 1.8’ into widescreen orchestral ambient jazz compositions. Consisting of 10 tracks, the music was composed, produced, mixed and recorded by Nala Sinephro and includes contributions from James Mollison (Ezra Collective), Morgan Simpson (black midi), Sheila Maurice-Grey (Kokoroko), Nubya Garcia, Lyle Barton, Natcyet Wakili (Sons of Kemet) and Dwayne Kilvington (Wonky Logic). For the past 30 years, Nada Surf has had the same core lineup: Matthew Caws, Daniel Lorca, and Ira Elliot. Moon Mirror, their first for New West Records, was produced by the band and Ian Laughton at Rockfield Studios in Wales. For the recording, Matthew, Daniel, and Ira were joined by their friend and longtime keyboard player Louie Lino.
Moon Mirror is a thrilling and moving leap forward for Nada Surf. The songs on the album are true to the human experience—as meaningful and mysterious and sometimes absurd as it is. There’s love, yes, but also grief, deep loneliness, doubt, wonder, and hope. These are not the songs of a band in their 20s. There is hard-won wisdom here, and hard-won belief in possibility—the kind that comes from falling down and getting back up.

Just because World’s Greatest Dad hasn’t released new music since 2019 doesn’t mean there wasn’t new music being made. It was just that after a line-up change that saw the original bassist and drummer leave to focus on real life, the band had to reconfigure... and founder Maddie Duncan had to effectively start over again.
The disaffected, haunting loneliness that has always been at the center of their songs remains in full force, however, and with Kegan Krogh on guitar, Ben Etter (who also produced the first album) on bass and Matt Hendler on drums, the broken, the raw execution of that mindset is as powerful as ever. Indeed, this new(er) incarnation of worlds greatest dad has been able to truly bring out the existential torment and trauma that drives Duncan to write these songs.
Written in 2020, but no less pertinent today, Better Luck Next Time’s 13 songs tussle between the vulnerability of Duncan’s lyrics and the defiance of the sonics that surround them.

Silent friend of those far from us, feeling how your breath is still enlarging space, fill the sombre belfry with your pealing. Late Music is pleased to present a new collection of music for chamber ensembles and for solo performers - for organs, strings, trombones, woodwinds, voices, electronics - make the crier’s a choir, we say!
The compositions on this album, written between 2022 and 2024, form a conceptual suite and an observance of the mental dances that we construct to understand acts of passage; the ways that we commune and memorialize and carry symbols back into the world beyond representation. To this end, The Head as Form’d in the Crier’s Choir engages two references to the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus: Rilke’s Sonnets to Orpheus, a collection of poems from 1922, and Monteverdi’s l’Orfeo, an early baroque opera from 1607. The Head as Form’d in the Crier’s Choir follows on from the last two albums, which were attempts to begin bridging the gap between the fixed electroacoustic pieces that emerge in Davachi’s home studio and her slow-paced, somewhat open-form chamber writing, in which each performance presents a new structure and in which each iteration offers the path to a new composition and deeper meaning.
Alongside Davachi, featured musicians on this album are Andrew McIntosh (viola, Los Angeles), Mattie Barbier (trombone, Los Angeles), Lisa McGee (mezzo-soprano, Los Angeles), Pierre-Yves Martel (viola da gamba, Montréal), Eyvind Kang (viola d’amore, Los Angeles), and Rebecca Lane (bass flute, Berlin), Sam Dunscombe (bass clarinet, Berlin), Michiko Ogawa (bass clarinet, Berlin), M.O. Abbott (trombone, Berlin), and Weston Olencki (trombone, Berlin) of the Harmonic Space Orchestra (Winds).

Something Weird has exhumed a crypt full of classic Spook Show promos and radio spots monstrously mashed together with fiendish rare surf and garage rock instrumentals. Includes a delightfully deranged DVD featuring Monsters Crash the Pajama Party and more bone-chilling freakouts of fright!
In 2001 SWV compiled what was to become one of their most popular and beloved DVDs, Monsters Crash the Pajama Party Spook Show Spectacular. It featured over three hours of rare Ghost Show shorts and trailers, radio spot audio, galleries of memorabilia, and commentaries with legendary living Ghostmasters. The folks at SWV were huge Spook Show fans and collected anything related to the subject including original 35mm film trailers as well as radio spots on promotional 45s and magnetic tape. So this was a dream project for them, and something near and dear to their bloody hearts.
Since its release, audio bits from the DVD have popped up on radio stations and music compilations. People love them. So it just seemed logical that Something Weird do a Spook Show album. And like our old pal, Jim "The Mad Doctor" Ridenour, we've always believed that horror and rock 'n roll go hand in hand, so what better way than to combine some rarely heard, fiendish surf and garage rock instrumentals with the trailer & radio spot audio and incidental music from the DVD? This album takes you back to Colombia of the 50s and 60s. In those days, the tropical music of the Caribbean and Pacific coasts took over the country’s mainland music scene by storm. One of the key figures during this period was Edmundo Arias. Together with Lucho Bermúdez and Pacho Galán, Arias is seen as one of the ‘big three’ composers of Colombian tropical music. He was a rather introverted person who avoided being in the spotlight at all cost, leading to his work being less known than his contemporaries. With this album we hope to highlight the amazing legacy Edmundo Arias has left us. Think of big bands with sharp dressed musicians playing the finest cumbias, porros and other tropical sounds in fancy ballrooms on a hot evening in Medellin or Bogota.

‘returning, dream’ is the second album from Paradise Cinema – the ‘Fourth World’ inspired project led by multi-instrumentalist Jack Wyllie (Portico Quartet/Szun Waves). While Wyllie’s other projects move between tightknit electronica, widescreen minimalism and improvised ambient sounds, ‘returning, dream’ contains nods to Jon Hassell, Terry Riley, Don Cherry and Midori Takada as well as more contemporary electronic, ambient and non-western music and even draws inspiration from physics and science fiction.
The first, eponymous, Paradise Cinema record, released in 2020, was recorded in Dakar (Wyllie lived in Senegal for a while in the late 2010s) and featured the dense rhythms of Mbalax music combining with Wyllie’s textural saxophone and synth playing, but here he takes a step into the unknown: The music is no longer built primarily around the rumbling propulsiveness of Mbalax, but takes its inspiration from the Many-Worlds Interpretation of quantum mechanics, which suggests that there are many different worlds that branch off from our own Wyllie explains: “It is an imagining of what music could be like in a different time and space, ancient and futuristic from everywhere and nowhere at once I was listening to a lot of physics podcasts when I created this record. I loved the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics; about the multiple paths we are taking each time a quantum decision is taken. The different worlds then splitting off like branches on a tree. I could imagine different histories and worlds and multiple versions of myself, others and even other societies existing. In this album I’ve dug into these ideas and attempted to make music that would come from those different spaces, trying to poke my finger through to the other selves and stories. Effectively a form of composed science fiction, the music is an idea of what might be occurring or have occurred on a branch of the tree in a different world. But I like to think the tracks might actually have been composed somewhere or sometime.”
Created in London by Jack Wyllie with additional recordings from Dakar and Sydney, ‘returning, dream’ blends sounds that do not typically live together. It features Khadim Mbaye (sabar drums) and Tons Sambe (tama drums) who provide the dense Sengalese rhythms, plus Szun Waves colleague Laurence Pike, also on drums.

Almost all records are a snapshot, a musical ribbon bow that documents a very speci c moment in time or simply ties-o everything up to that point. Indigo De Souza’s I Love My Mom, her debut LP initially released in 2018, was the latter; a collection of the best songs she’d written in the few years that preceded it, recorded quickly and breathlessly and thrown out into the world.
Consisting of ten songs, I Love My Mom feels both raw and unabashed. Indigo pulled a band together for the rst time, and was quickly encouraged to commit her songs to tape. Recorded at her friend’s house, they played almost everything live in just a few days, and released the record naturally, with little fanfare. That the record quickly took on a life of its own, deeply resonating with those who heard it, is a testament to Indigo’s songwriting which took inspiration from the unique worlds created by Arthur Russel, Sparklehorse, The Microphones, as well as contemporaries such as LVL UP and Happyness.
I Love My Mom features fan-favorites “Take O Ur Pants” and “How I Get Myself Killed”. The former balances an often breezy lead vocal with gnarly undercurrents of guitar before the whole thing lets rip in its punchy chorus, while the latter, the album’s opening track, nds a di erent mood entirely, a slacker rock gem that repeats its chorus as a chest-beating mantra. Elsewhere, “Good Heart” furthers the dichotomy which sits at the record’s core, each moment of quiet introspection soon met by a cacophonous burst of energy.
Indigo called the record I Love My Mom as a way of acknowledging the one person who’d believed in her work the most. Growing up in a conservative small town in North Carolina, Indigo struggled with bullying and being an outcast from a very early age, resulting in a crippling shyness that lasted throughout her teens. When her mom noticed her channeling these experiences into songwriting she encouraged the endeavor wholeheartedly, buying her a guitar and arranging lessons. By the age of 11 Indigo was writing her own songs. “Over time I realized that she had pushed me out of my shell completely, and performing became a thing that I naturally wanted to do,” Indigo says. “I couldn't have gotten to that point without her. It became one of the things that made me feel seen and safe.”
At the age of 16, Indigo moved to Asheville and found it to be a place where unique qualities weren’t scorned but celebrated. “I was always di erent, and I was very aware of it. It was very di cult because I felt like people just didn’t want me there and I didn’t know why,” Indigo says of her childhood. “When I moved to Asheville I found that actually a lot of people were like me, and there are places that are so much more diverse. I realized that it was okay to be di erent.”
In the sanctity of this exciting new town, Indigo leapt into her songwriting and began an empowering journey which would eventually lead her to the writing, recording, and self-releasing of her debut album - complete with its striking cover art which was painted by her mom; a nod to the person who played such a pivotal role in those preceding years.
The album was released to immediate excitement in the local scene leading to repeated sold-out shows at the beloved Asheville venue The Mothlight. Indigo also began touring with her band, supporting the likes of Alex G and Beach Bunny. It was at one of these shows where Saddle Creek rst witnessed her. The label signed Indigo soon after and gave I Love My Mom the full release it deserves - with the album pressed to vinyl for the rst time in the summer of 2021. Indigo De Souza continued to release much celebrated albums including Any Shape You Take in 2021 and All of This Will End in 2023.

Max Jaffe wasn’t planning on creating an album commemorating the decade-plus he spent living in New York City while recording Reduction of Man. Operating as a preemptive elegy, Reduction of Man traces Jaffe’s musical trajectory while in New York City - a process of becoming fluent in several musical languages and cultures all at once, rather than the linear education of an MFA musician (which Jaffe also is). Jaffe’s second “solo” album finds him at the helm of an ensemble - leading the project as he plays: one hand drumming, the other composing and editing on the fly, shepherding multiple musical voices towards a single end - a sinewy tension between noise and groove.
During his time in NYC, Jaffe eventually came into contact with Tlacael Esparza, who would go on to develop the Sensory Percussion drum set technology. Jaffe immediately embraced the then-emerging technology, expanding the drum set into exciting sonic territory. As Jaffe’s practice performing and composing using Sensory Percussion developed, he began to fee that his relationship with the process had hit a wall. While primarily used as a process to trigger samples, Jaffe took to recording Reduction of Man as a way to challenge himself and SP’s limits as a composition tool.
An invitation to participate in the Pioneer Works Music Residency program provided an opportunity to spend a month, in July 2021, dedicated to these creative goals. Max invited trumpet player Chris Williams (HxH, Pink Siifu), guitarist Will Greene (Trigger), and bassist / keyboardist Jesse Heasly (Spirits Having Fun) for a series of core sessions; saxophonist Matt Nelson (GRID, Flying Luttenbachers), tenor sax player Nathaniel Morgan (Helado Negro) and multi-instrumentalist Lucia Vitkova joined on additional sessions to improvise and record what would become Reduction of Man. Jaffe would trigger an “event” using Sensory Percussion to which the players would respond through improvisation. Jaffe would then process and manipulate the band’s output in real time - drumming with one hand, composing with the other.
This on-the-fly approach allowed Jaffe to tightly compose the chance encounters and momentary fireworks of improvisers playing off and to each other, creating five compositions that sound like worlds being created instead of a discrete set of improvisations. Reduction of Man is an album confidently existing in the in-between. It’s in-between composition and improvisation, jazz and experimental electronic music, recorded in NYC and finished in Los Angeles.

Locust Abortion Technician, Hairway To Steven, Cream Corn From The Socket Of Davis
The second part of Matador’s reissues of the essential early records by Texas’s Butthole Surfers continues with three of their most insane slabs -- 1985’s ‘Cream Corn from the Socket of Davis,’ 1987’s ‘Locust Abortion Technician’ and 1988’s ‘Hairway to Steven.’
The period during which these records were first issued parallels the Buttholes’ transition from being weirdo Texas outcasts to becoming internationally recognized smut-kings of the American underground. In 1985 they were still the sole province of hallucingensoaked punk rock freaks. By 1988 they had toured Europe, had records licensed by internationally, and bought a house in Driftwood Texas to serve as their home base. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.
‘Cream Corn’ plucked two tunes from ‘Rembrandt’ and added a couple new ones that had been recorded on their home studio 8 track in Winterville Georgia.
“Moving to Florida” (the best example ever of what Beefheart probably sounded like when he’s tripping) and the other three tracks blew peoples’ minds by being so precise and fullly-messed-up at the same time. ‘Cream Corn’ was a perfect bite-sized taster for what would follow.
Without anyone looking over their shoulders, the band really rose to the occasion with ‘Locust Abortion Technician.’ From the opening track, “Sweat Loaf,” which quotes Black Sabbath with results both hilarious and bowel-stomping, to the scuzz-guitar riven “found” vocals of “22 Going on 23,” ‘Locust’ is a non-stop face-full of hallucinogenic gas. Maniacal sludge guitar figures and Gibbytronix vocals are smeared everywhere, with most

excellent results. For many folks. ‘Locust’ represents the album with which the Buttholes fully fulfilled their insane potential.
‘Hairway to Steven’ is a blast, ranging from the blood-smeared guitar-overload of “Jimi” to the acoustic guitar-based sing-along sweetness of “I Saw an X-Ray of a Girl Passing Gas” to the Fugs-like ranting of “John E. Smokes.” Yet somehow, the album managed to get the straight media to actually notice. For all its strangeness, ‘Hairway’ got rave notices in places that had never paid the band any attention previously. It was the Buttholes’ last album of the ‘80s and marks the beginning of their ascendance into something akin to commercial success. Not that the band actually imagined anything at all like that occurring.
When I interviewed them in February 1986, I asked Gibby about their plans, he said, “We’ve got a bunch of new songs recorded that don’t even have names. We don’t know what they’re called or anything. It’s totally out of control. We have no plans whatever. We never claimed to be quick or smart or anything. Maybe we just have one song and we fuck it up so much people think we have more. I guess the album after ‘Locust Abortion Technician’ might be called ‘The Butthole Surfers Buy a Synthesizer.’ We’ve written lots of songs, we’ve forgotten lots of songs. That’s the way it goes.”
Of course, that’s not the way it went. But I don’t think anyone was more surprised about that than the band themselves. And so it goes.

Origin stories reenact familiar myths; this one begins with a kid alone in a bedroom, trying to make something no one has heard before. Hailing from San Francisco, Filipino-American artist April Harper Grey started making music as underscores in middle school, when years of noodling around on GarageBand culminated in the realization that, if taken seriously enough, this whole “trying to be like Skrillex” thing might amount to something great. For years, underscores released a steady stream of one-offs via SoundCloud, which endeared her to like minded artists and a burgeoning community of fans, but it wasn’t until 2017, with the release of EP skin purifying treatment, that the project stepped out of its solitary origins and began to capture the attention of a much larger audience. In 2021, underscores released the debut underscores album, fishmonger, which was written and recorded in that same childhood bedroom amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. That collection launched underscores from recording vocals in a car to opening for 100 Gecs on the U.S. leg of the 10,000 Gecs tour Before hitting the road, underscores released yet another collection, boneyard aka fearmonger, a collection of seven tracks that manages to sound like both the climax of and the morning after the craziest night of your life. On the heels of 10,000 Gecs, the first underscores mini-tour sold out in NY, LA, Chicago, and underscores’s hometown of San Francisco. Since then, underscores has played Lollapalooza’s Main Stage, Electric Forest, FVDED in the Park, and Corona Capital CDMX. Independent since the project’s inception, underscores signed to Mom+Pop last year. She also debuted “Count of three (You can eat $#@!)” – co-written with Dylan Brady (of 100 Gecs), Cashmere Cat, Benny Blanco – on 100 Gecs’ Dog Show Records. Since dropping boneyard aka fearmonger, she’s produced music for Alice Longyu Gao, glaive, Whethan, and renforshort. There was a bird Matthew Ehler had seen in his backyard before, but he’d never really stopped to look at it.
A red-headed woodpecker, a strange-looking bird. After years of more self-destructive escapes from everyone’s respective demons and traumas, Ehler started to embrace the stillness of birdwatching. “It was something to occupy my mind,” he explains. His new hobby wouldn’t just lend Cliffdiver’s sophomore album its title, but signal a spiritual overhaul rippling through the band.
The origins of Cliffdiver go all the way back to 2017. By 2021, the line-up had settled into Ehler on guitar, Joey Duffy and
Briana Wright on vocals, Gilbert Erickson on guitar, Tyler Rogers on bass, Eliot Cooper on drums, and Dony Nickels on sax. All of them veterans of Tulsa’s vibrant and interconnected music scene, they kicked up steam fast — over a host of EPs, singles, and their debut album, Exercise Your Demons, they went from DIY shows to selling out Tulsa’s famed Cain’s Ballroom.
Still, Birdwatching feels like the work of a whole different band: an album specifically grappling with abandoning cyclical behaviors and addictions that no longer serve you. It’s poppunk maturing into grown-ass adult travails.
Birdwatching is a very real take on life: Things get better, but they also get worse again, and better again, and worse again, and nobody will ever have it all figured out. In each snapshot, Cliffdiver offers a companion for those ups and downs.

Windswept is the fifth solo album from Photay, the nom de plume of electronic naturalist, experimental-pop beatmaker and composer Evan Shornstein. Chick Corea changed the face of jazz with his explosively virtuosic Elektric Band. In 2023, Candid remastered and repackaged their 5 studio albums on vinyl, unedited and in their original running order for the first time ever as part of a strictly limited, deluxe box set.
Now, we’re making each album available individually, following up our stand-alone releases The Chick Corea Elektric Band and Light Years with Eye Of The Beholder. Called “one of this group’s finest recordings” that “ranks with the best fusion of the latter half of the 1980s” by AllMusic, this is another fan favorite that has never been reissued with the attention it deserves.
Released in the midst of the CD explosion, only 9 of Eye Of The Beholder’s 11 tracks made it to the trunkated vinyl release. Elements of Light isn’t “crossover” jazz or “jazz-adjacent”; rather, it is a personal and original expression of a tradition Moullier inherited from his heroes. “What really influenced me is the language of horn players and singers and piano players,” says Moullier, who goes on to name Trane, Bud Powell, Bird, Sonny Stitt and Cannonball, among others. “And that’s the language I’ve always tried to reproduce on my instrument .”
Throughout Elements of Light, Moullier reconciles his abiding love for midcentury acoustic jazz with inspired production choices more often put to use in pop and alternative rock . So you’ll hear Real Book-worthy tunes of remarkable craft and efficacy — with vibraphone and piano melodies that are subtly reinforced by synthesizer. “I really love the sound of piano and vibes together — how the texture creates a third instrument,” Moullier says.
Along the way in Elements of Light, a couple of special guests elevate the proceedings. The pianist Gerald Clayton, who appears on the title track, gave Moullier deeply meaningful lessons when the vibraphonist was a student at the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz (then still the Monk Institute). Reflecting on this casual mentorship today, Moullier’s appreciation remains palpable. “He was incredibly helpful, in a very grounded way,” he says, adding that the lessons were not only about music, extending into more general wisdom about creative direction and life decisions.

TANUKICHAN CIRCLES
Tanukichan, the musical project of Oakland, CA’s Hannah van Loon, has been a prominent figure in modern shoegaze music since 2016, when she first collaborated with Chaz Bear of Toro y Moi. Together, they released an EP and two full-length albums under Bear’s Company Records, culminating in 2023’s GIZMO. With her new EP Circles, out September 20th, 2024, via Carpark Records, van Loon ventures into new territory by teaming up with a new producer for the first time -- Franco Reid.
The genesis of their partnership dates back to the GIZMO campaign, when Reid noticed van Loon wearing an Incubus shirt in a press photo on Instagram. Intrigued by whether or not van Loon was a genuine fan, he sent her a DM. Their shared musical interest sparked a dialogue that eventually led to the creation of the single “NPC” in 2023.
Lead single “City Bus,” offers a reflection on van Loon’s childhood bus rides in San Francisco, evoking the stop-and-go rhythm of commuter life through hard-hitting drums and heavy guitar feedback phasing in and out of the mix. Themes of selfreflection and societal belonging permeate the track, echoing van Loon’s ongoing personal journey.
While much of Circles delves into internal struggles, “It Gets Easier” takes on a more celebratory tone as van Loon realizes she’s developed a heightened sense of maturity when dealing with hardship. “It feels easier to let go of situations or people that don’t serve me,” reflects van Loon, “Or if they can’t be avoided, at least I don’t have to dwell on the sadness or discomfort I feel when letting someone down.” Introduced by Reid, nu-gaze sensation Wisp, contributes a verse in her similarly ethereal vocal style.
There is a notable shift on Circles when you consider the first three Tanukichan releases were produced by a pioneer of the chillwave genre. With van Loon’s consistently dreamy songwriting and Reid at the helm, Tanukichan enters new sonic territory that feels larger, arena-ready, and more like a highspeed night drive than the hazy summer dream of its predecessors.

Strut presents an exclusive reissue of Oneness Of Juju’s classic 1976 album Space Jungle Luv, an essential addition to the Black Fire Records reissue series.
When bandleader James “Plunky” Branch created Oneness Of Juju in 1975, he had spent five years working on both the West and East coasts of the U.S. The group’s previous incarnation, Juju, had become a fixture within New York’s avant-garde jazz scene. Upon moving to Richmond, Virginia, Plunky re-grouped with a new set of musicians, fusing African percussion with funk and R&B. The band recorded two of their most celebrated albums during 1975 and 1976, African Rhythms and Space Jungle Luv.
This change of direction ushered in the most successful era yet for the band. Plunky connected with distributor, publicist and DJ Jimmy “Black Fire” Gray, and African Rhythms scored a huge local success. Plunky recalls, “A year later, with Space Jungle Luv, I moved from R&B into a more mellow, spiritual direction. The music featured a smooth progressive sound that was perfect for our singer Lady Eka-Ete’s mesmerizing, soulfully sweet vocals. That album also introduced guitarist Melvin Glover to the group; his songs broadened our repertoire by adding celestial, harp-like tones and textures.” The pianist from Pharoah Sanders’ band, Joe Bonner, also guested on the sessions.
“With Space Jungle Luv, I was making a Pharoah kind of record,” continues Plunky. “I wanted to deliver a spiritually uplifting message; artists like George Clinton and Sun Ra had explored the theme of space and people were looking towards the future and new technology. We were also describing the album – space music, jungle music, love songs. Among the tracks, ‘River Luvrite’ describes positive people as constituting a flow, a continuous spirit. With ‘Follow Me’, we were just saying, ‘come along with us and find new places together.’”
This new reissue of Space Jungle Luv features the full original artwork, including the cover painting by Muzi Branch. It is remastered by The Carvery and includes a brand new interview with bandleader James “Plunky” Branch alongside rare photos. The release also includes brand new liner notes by James “Plunky” Branch.

Strut presents a brand new reissue of Juju’s powerful Afrocentric album ‘Chapter Two: Nia’ from 1974, originally released on Strata East.
Juju formed in San Francisco and moved to New York in July 1972. "We were avant-garde artists and revolutionary agents for change," explains bandleader James “Plunky” Branch. "We played venues like Slugs, the East, and Ornette Coleman’s loft on Prince Street; we also met and hung out with the greats, from Pharoah Sanders to John Gilmore."
By 1974, Plunky and the band had relocated to Richmond, Virginia. "New York’s cost of living was high, and I thought Richmond could be a fresh creative environment. We stayed in the home of my oldest and best friend, which we dubbed the Juju Raga Artist House. We lived upstairs and converted the downstairs into the first black arts gallery and performance space in the state." In June 1974, Juju recorded their second album for Strata-East, Chapter Two: Nia, at Eastern Recording Studios in Richmond. "The music was Afrocentric," continues Plunky, "and we included black nationalistic poetry written and spoken by Ngoma Ya Uhuru, a high school friend who had spent time with Amiri Baraka’s Spirit House." The album also featured a remarkable freeform cover of Pharoah Sanders’ classic ‘Black Unity.’
Juju became the local Virginia exponents of progressive ideas that were being expressed nationally and internationally, attracting a small, active group of artists and supporters. However, being in the South, Richmond's black music audience leaned towards blues, gospel, and soul. After much consideration, Juju decided to incorporate trap drums and a backbeat, blending these rhythms with electric sounds, and rebranded as Oneness Of Juju. With a new lineup and renewed energy, the band began a new chapter, releasing their classic African Rhythms album a year later.
This new reissue of Juju’s ‘Chapter Two: Nia’ includes the full original artwork, featuring cover art adapted from a concert video still by Collis Davis. Remastered from the original tapes by The Carvery, this Strut release also includes brand new liner notes by bandleader James “Plunky” Branch.

Studio One Soul 2 takes us deep into Jamaica’s long-standing fascination with American Soul and Funk music.
Featuring a host of seminal Reggae artists who all first established their careers at Studio One before finding worldwide success. Featured artists include Horace Andy, The Heptones, Cornell Campbell, Ken Boothe, Jackie Mittoo, Jacob Miller and many more A-Class Studio One legends interpreting both classic and littleknown American Soul and Funk tunes by the likes of Curtis Mayfield, Bill Withers, The Five Stairsteps, Marvin Gaye, The Stylistics, Lee Dorsey, Al Green, Syl Johnson and more.
Curtis Mayfield is without a doubt the main soul influence for many reggae groups in the 1960s and 70s. Cornell Campbell’s ‘Ten to One’ featured here is a stunning recut of the original Studio One single by The Mad Lads who first covered this Curtis-penned hit for the Impressions. Another great Curtis Mayfield production, The Five Stairsteps and Cubie’s ‘Don’t Change’, is interpreted by Studio One soul man Winston Francis. Similarly, Devon Russell’s superb ‘Make Me Believe in You’ is, if anything, superior to Curtis Mayfield’s ground-breaking original.
While American Soul and Funk remain a constant source of inspiration on this album, classic DJs such as Prince Jazzbo and Little Joe also used these rhythms to ride vocal toasts over to serious effect.
This selection features a mixture of classics, super-rare and unreleased tracks from Studio One all lovingly digitally re-mastered for this release. The vinyl edition also comes on super-loud double vinyl housed in gatefold sleeve and with download code. The new CD edition comes as digipack plus booklet. Another essential Studio One release.

Eddie Quinteros was one precocious kid. Before he was old enough to drive, he was singing on live TV and ying to Hawai’i to rock out at stadium gigs. When his contemporaries were still in high school, he was hitting the charts with a tune he wrote himself, playing on an Alan Freed package tour, and making multiple appearances on American Bandstand. And before the San Francisco singer/guitarist was out of his teens, he’d already been screwed over by a shifty manager and sworn o the music business.
Along the way, Quinteros cut a handful of jumping singles showing that if he’d had the right breaks, he could have altered history. Ritchie Valens wouldn’t have been the era’s only Chicano rock ‘n’ roll hero. Quinteros’ Southern rockabilly in uences are audible in his early singles, but they’re ltered through the more citi ed point of view of a San Francisco teen. And in the mid ‘60s, he reinvented himself as the frontman for the Au Go-Go’s, turning out a chiming, folk-rock avored sound more in line with labelmates and fellow S.F.’ers the Beau Brummels.
All of Ed’s recorded output only amounted to a handful of 45s, but this collection sets things straight for posterity, featuring demos, unreleased tracks, live recordings, and acetates.

Experience unlimited had originally started out in 1973 when they met at Ballou Senior High School in South-East D.C. and came to the attention of Black Fire Records’JimmyGrayafterwinningaschooltalentcompetition.“Jimmy saw that we had a lot of potential and he put us into the studio,”remembersbandleaderGregory “Sugar Bear” Elliott. “That was our first experience recording - I remember that he just told us to be ourselves and we just gathered together and played. We were young kids then saying what we felt.”
Free Yourself is a free-flowing album, full of positive messages and infectious grooves. “We could play any style,” continues Sugar Bear. “The album has a lot of different songs and feelings – from ‘Peace Gone Away’ to ‘Funky Consciousness’ which features some heavy guitar work and ‘Free Yourself’ where you can hear early stylings of go-go – it’s all in one. We just wanted to record where we were at.”
Experience Unlimited would go on to score the huge hit ‘Da Butt’ in 1988 which featured in the Spike Lee movie School Days and would add their unmistakeable rolling rhythms to Grace Jones’ ‘Slave To The Rhythm’ and Kurtis Blow’s ‘Party Time’

Forastero translates to “outsider” or “foreigner”. It is a common reference in Argentina folk music that describes the experience of immigrants and troubadours - bringing up feelings of isolation and solitude, but also the freedom of roaming in nature without borders. It reflects Selasco’s experience as an immigrant - feeling like an outsider both in the United States or Argentina, yet at the same feeling that there is a deeper sense of belongingtotheworldthatisbeyondborders.
In Forastero, Terror/Cactus explores themes of identity, memory, perception, and mysticism. Featuring collaborations with artists such as Pahua, Rumbo Tumba, Barrio Lindo, and Corina Lawrence, Forastero encompasses a musical landscape filled with electronic folk, dark cumbia, andpsychedelicbeats.
Shika Shika is a label for music without borders. As essential take on psych-pop futurism and a must for fans of Broadcast, Sun Ra and Ennio Morricone. Establishing the band as innovators in their field, the record was declared “a masterpiece” by The Line Of Best Fit, while The Quietus asserted Vanishing Twin as “one of the most original and exciting acts of the moment”. This was the group’s first LP for Fire Records, at the time of recording the band’s evolving lineup consisted of songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist Cathy Lucas, drummer Valentina Magaletti, bassist Susumu Mukai, synth/guitar player Phil MFU and visual artist/film maker Elliott Arndt on flute and percussion. The album was produced by Lucas in a number of non-standard, non-studio settings. ‘KRK (At Home In Strange Places)’ summons up the spirit of Sun Ra’s Lanquidity and Broadcast And The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults Of The Radio and was simply recorded on an iPhone during a live set which crackled with psychic connectivity on the Croatian island of Krk. The magical Morricone-esque lounge of ‘You Are Not an Island’, the blissed-out Jean-Claude Vannier style arrangement of ‘Invisible World’ and burbling sci fi funk ode to a 1972 cult French animation, ‘Planète Sauvage’, were all recorded in nighttime sessions in an abandoned mill in Sudbury.

Time moves in spirals. It took 20 years for Hyperdub to release a jungle album, finally converging with the most important sound of its prehistory.
South East London's Tim Reaper, and Kloke from Victoria, Australia are two big guns from the new wave of junglists. On Reaper’s relentlessly hyperactive label Future Retro, a torrent of releases have helped provide the ammunition to rejuvenate that most precious of pirate radio and sound system styles, Jungle from the period 1993-95, that abstracted elements from dub reggae through to techno, riveted onto a finely chopped and accelerated breakbeat undercarriage.

Phi-Psonics is a meditative, deeply soulful jazz group from Los Angeles, led by bassist Seth Ford-Young and featuring Sylvain Carton on woodwinds, Mitchell Yoshida on electric piano, and Josh Collazo on drums. Their beautiful music draws on jazz and classical influences together with Ford-Young’s own musical experiences, relationships, and his introduction to spirituality, yoga and philosophy at a young age. Along the way they create something uniquely their own, sharing beautiful landscapes for your spirit to roam freely within.
Morning Sun / Arrival was recorded from the same sessions that formed PhiPsonics second album Octava - it’s an emotional, introspective, and unusual approach to meditative jazz that offers us a beautiful space for uplifting contemplation and wields a quiet power to create a spiritually inspiring world of timeless, warm melodies and instrumental exploration for the deep listener and thoughtful voyager. Seth explains: “(Octava) is about change and evolution to a higher version of ourselves. Understanding this journey through the idea of ascending a musical scale and arriving at a new, higher octave is natural especially for a musician. We move, struggle, and work through the various steps or tones and arrive at the octave a new version of ourselves, still the same person, but vibrating at a higher frequency.”
Morning Sun draws direct inspiration from the backdrop of Seth’s neighbourhood and the sounds of a dance party or ‘Quinceñera’ floating through the streets. “The live music in my neighbourhood largely ranges from regional Mexican styles like Mariachi and Banda to Cumbia, Salsa and Reaggeaton , along with Oldies or “Brown-Eyed Soul”. Sometimes the same band will play several of these styles throughout a long evening of music, sometimes more than one band’s sounds will be drifting across the hills creating an interesting “mashup”….all these sounds definitely find their way into my music and I welcome it, it is in the air I breathe everyday, and feels like part of my sonic DNA.”
Recorded at 64 Sound in the Highland Park neighbourhood of Los Angeles, and featuring a beautiful dance between Sylvain Carton’s alto flute and Mitchell Yoshida’s Wurlitzer, ‘Arrival’ emerged from the first band sessions after the Covid lockdowns. Seth remenices: “...we were still shaking off the heaviness of the previous year or so. Arrival felt like a moment to recognize that we had come through something and here we stand. Like always, we can only be where we are at the moment and yet we all came through something to get to this place. Arrival is a contemplation of this idea of being where we are after whatever journey got us here”.

As one half of Roll The Dice, Pardon worked alongside fellow Stockholm resident Peder Mannerfelt on brooding fusions of electronica and classical composition. By contrast, his 2021 solo debut Hello Death saw him take a much more stripped-down approach, placing the emphasis on plaintive piano composition with only the subtlest of sonic treatments in the space around the notes. Without intentionally setting out to record a conceptual follow up, as he developed the sketches which would become The Abyss, Pardon found himself contemplating unknown futures and the artists’ quest into unexplored territory.
Pardon’s forthright approach to composition lands each concise piece with immediacy, but there’s exquisite detail etched into every inch of The Abyss which reveals itself patiently over repeat listens.
