Shika Shika is proud to present Campo de Cielo, a collaboration between Coro Qom Chelaalapi and producer Lagartijeando. The release celebrates the 60th anniversary of the indigenous choir from Northwest Argentina, making it the longest-running continuously active musical group in Latin America. Following their first release together in 2019, Campo del Cielo marks the second collaboration between the choir and producer Matias Zundel. The EP offers 3 tracks produced by Lagartijeando that experiment with Qom traditional sounds within the context of organic electronic downtempo. To complement this, Campo del Cielo includes 3 original unedited recordings of Coro Qom Chelaalapi, recorded by Lagartijeando in Resistencia, Chaco. About Campo del Cielo: Campo del Cielo (Field of the Sky) refers to a vast region of northern Argentina located in the Southern Chaco, bordering the provinces of Chaco y Santiago del Estero, that was struck by an iron meteor shower approximately 4000 years ago - the results of an asteroid exploding upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere. Qom mythology considers the "rocks" (aerolites) to have been drops of sweat from the sun; they were worshiped as such, and it was thought that at daybreak, when the skies were clear, some of these “rocks” would transform into trees (here, the myth suggests a notion of Earth’s fertilization through solar system events). The Qom and neighboring ethnic groups such as the Moqoit y Abipones considered Campo del Cielo to be a site in which the Sun and Earth shared an intimate connection, which could be seen as connection between the terrestrial and celestial, the mundane and the divine.

KING PERRY LEE SCRATCH PERRY
Record producer, composer, singer, and pioneer of the dub music genre Lee Scratch Perry passed away in August 2021. His influence over popular music since the 1970s is hugely significant, with artists including Bob Marley & The Wailers, The Clash, Beastie Boys, Max Romeo, Junior Murvin and The Orb all enriched by Perry’s legendary touch, innovative studio techniques and production style. Conceived, written and recorded during the COVID pandemic, ‘King Perry’ was produced by Daniel Boyle, and features guest performances from Greentea Peng, Shaun Ryder, Tricky, Marta, Rose Waite and Fifi Rong. Two tracks were also co-produced with Tricky, who releases Perry’s last recorded performances on his False Idols label. Over a career spanning six decades, Lee Scratch Perry left the music world with a huge catalogue of albums, productions and appearances that cannot be underestimated. Releases for Island Records, Trojan, Adrian Sherwood’s On-U Sound, Mad Professor’s Ariwa...the list goes on. It was in 2014 that Perry teamed up with UK producer Daniel Boyle, and from this collaboration came the Grammy nominated album ‘Back At The Controls’ and was followed up five years later with the ‘Black Album’. The ‘King Perry’ album was born out of a request from Perry that he “wanted to do something new, something different but still with a dub framework”. And so, armed with influences as diverse as synthwave, big beat, drum & bass and electronica, Boyle and Perry traded ideas, beats and lyrics in a project that continued to grow as its various guest performers were added, resulting in a kaleidoscopic and engaging melting pot of rhythms, melodies, and voices. Poignantly, closing track ‘Goodbye’ was Perry’s last ever recorded vocal performance.

The Complete Singles STREET DATE: FEBRUARY 2, 2024 Our 2020-2021 release on CD and LP of the 20 albums recorded for the legendarily collectible Black Jazz label was probably the most momentous and successful reissue campaign we at Real Gone Music have ever done. That music recorded 50 years ago could speak so eloquently to the turmoil our society was experiencing during those days of COVID and civic unrest attests to its enduring beauty and the power of its spiritually-tinged message of black empowerment. Ever since we put out the last Black Jazz album, though, we have wrestled with how to create a compilation of this amazingly varied and rich body of work. And then we realized—why not label producer Gene Russell do it for us? Though Russell is long gone, the compositions he selected for the ten singles the label put out give us a ready-made template for a Black Jazz collection. Thus, we’re releasing this 15-track CD with three goals in mind. First, to offer something of a “best-of” for folks new to the label or for those who want a “sampler” (though we highly recommend delving into the complete album catalog). Second, for the completist collectors, we’ve included the unique single edits…with a caveat. On those singles that simply faded out the album track on one side and faded it up on the next, we’ve elected to present the album tracks without interruption to ensure a more seamless listening experience. And, finally, Black Jazz Records: The Complete Singles provides a window into what Gene Russell considered to be the most commercial tracks released by the label. His guesses did not result in financial success for Black Jazz; but there is no questioning the production values and fierce, passionate playing that he and the artist roster brought to every single piece of vinyl the label put out, be it a longplayer or single. It’s quite the artistic legacy; and we at Real Gone are very proud to have had a hand in its reassessment and re-appreciation, which we are hoping this collection only bolsters. One look at the axe-wielding marauder (drawn by famed heavy metal illustrator Edward Repka) on the front of this album and you know it’s not for the faint of heart. Canadian metal band 3 Inches of Blood’s musical attack (an appropriate term indeed) featured a unique, dual lead vocal line-up of Cam Pipes on “clean” vocals and Jamie Hooper on “screaming” vocals, with bludgeoning guitars (okay, axes) provided by Sunny Dhak and Bobby Froese (Dhak, Froese, and drummer Matt Wood left after this album to form Pride Tiger). Though this record came out in 2004 on the Roadrunner label, it wears its ‘80s metal allegiances on its sleeve, harkening back to the vein-popping intensity of vintage Judas Priest and Accept. Which makes its previous absence on vinyl all the more inexplicable…folks have been waiting for this one. Remastered for a blood red vinyl pressing on its 20th anniversary, with a full-color inner sleeve sporting lyrics. Storm the castle!

All set to Marvelous 3’s never less than hooky power pop/glam metal stylings, often placed in seamless segues from one song to another…Readysexgo is the catchy soundtrack to the love life of a hopeless but somewhat embittered romantic. While the most renown track in this omniversal opus is the atomic expletive-filled repartee “Nuclear War,” there is so much more to this dark mysterious journey through the mind of Sun Ra. The sprawling, suite-like 20-minute title track sustains a lyrical edge in spite of an open framework and textures, which encourage sonorities to surface and emerge from the band as if there was no human intention behind them. In opposition to “Nuclear War,” Ra's organ playing here was built less on bombast and sonic terror than it is on whispers, stutters, shivers, and swells. Fireside Chat offers a wide stylistic array, as was the artist’s intent, reflecting his eclectic, seemingly irreconcilable approach to compositional extremes. With Sun Ra you get everything... except predictability. Thomas Stanley, in his ambiguously titled 2014 book, The Execution of Sun Ra, observes, "Throughout his life [Sun Ra] was consistent in his opposition to war and his art reflected this, perhaps most sharply in the space chant 'Nuclear War.' 'It's a motherfucker, don't you know,' Sun Ra and trombonist Tyrone Hill [joined by June Tyson] sing over a deceptively sparkly chromatic piano line played at a steady walking rhythm. Sometimes a sketch says more than a mural” is what singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist GrantLee Phillips said back in 1999 about his forthcoming debut solo record. Recorded over the course of three days in the basement studio of Jon Brion (the GRAMMY-winning producer of Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann and many more), Ladies’ Love Oracle was released following the dissolution of Grant Lee Buffalo, the widely celebrated trio that first brought Phillips to national prominence. The album was met with critical acclaim upon release, with AllMusic declaring that “Phillips joins the gilded ranks of Bob Mould, Mark Eitzel, and Kristin Hersh -- songwriters who have flourished alone in the wakes of their respective bands.” For the 25th anniversary of Ladies’ Love Oracle, the album is being issued on vinyl for the first time. The Decline and Fall of Heavenly shows a band rapidly expanding its scope. The album veers confidently from high speed indiepunk (Me And My Madness) to cool surf instrumental (Sacramento) and back again to the sweetest indiepop (Itchy Chin). Meanwhile, the singles, which include the band’s most celebrated tune - P.U.N.K Girl – demonstrate how much confidence Heavenly were deriving from their involvement in the nascent Riot Grrrl scene. At Heavenly gigs in the UK, often playing with other bands on the increasingly influential Sarah Records, audiences were getting bigger, while the bands were finding a sweet spot where anticorporate understatement and a dismissive attitude to an increasingly misogynist UK Press was no barrier to success. P.U.N.K Girl and Atta Girl on the other hand, are more gleeful, more headlong, and somehow feel more American: they are carried along by the excitement and adrenaline of having found another spiritual home - the indiepunk Riot Grrrl scene that was focussed on Olympia, WA, the HQ of Heavenly’s US label K Records. Amelia Fletcher and Cathy Rogers were now confidently sharing vocals. Peter (guitar) Mathew (drums) and Rob (bass) had become adept at changing gear from ornate pop to full-on punk, unafraid of genre rules and increasingly happy to make up their own version of what pop music should sound like. The more delicate, more decorative arrangements of Heavenly’s first two albums had been left behind. The band were still dogged by accusations of being too fey, too ‘twee’: not ROCK enough. It was, and remains, a landmark album in the Brainfeeder catalogue, marking the label’s first foray into jazz. Austin was an integral member of the Brainfeeder label family. Tragically he died on 21st November 2012 aged 22 years old. A truly prodigious talent on the piano, Austin effortlessly combined inquisitive futurism with incredible musicianship and a healthy respect for the heritage of jazz. On “Endless Planets” Austin recorded with Zane Musa (alto sax), Ben Wendel (tenor and soprano), Hamilton Price (bass) and Zach Harmon (drums). He also relies on longtime friend and associate Strangeloop for electronic manipulation throughout the set and ends the album with a scintillating collaboration with The Cinematic Orchestra and singer Heidi Vogel: ‘Epilogue: Renaissance Bubbles’. The new edition features four previously unreleased tracks recorded at the legendary BBC Maida Vale Studios in London in 2011 (including a live version of ‘DMT Song’ from FlyLo’s album “Until The Quiet Comes”) with Austin leading an all-star band comprising Richard Spaven (drums), Tom Mason (bass), Jason Yarde (alto sax), Heidi Vogel (vocals), and Jason Swinscoe of The Cinematic Orchestra on “electronics”. “A vast exploration of sound, Peralta shows you exactly who he is with this project. Ducks Ltd. make inviting and frenetic guitar pop for when life feels overwhelming. While the band’s songs are ostensibly breezy, a palpable anxiety boils underneath that communicates something deeper about everyday existence. On their latest album Harm’s Way, the Toronto duo of Tom McGreevy and Evan Lewis hones in on interpersonal and societal collapses, urban decay, and the near-impossibility of keeping a level head when everything around you seems to be falling apart. Even with its often dark subject matter, Harm’s Way is Ducks Ltd.’s most vividly rendered and collaborative collection yet. It’s an undeniable evolution for the band, not just in how these songs soar, but in their entire writing and recording processes. Composed on tour while supporting acts like Nation of Language, Illuminati Hotties, and Archers of Loaf, the album displays the band’s finely tuned songcraft and well-earned, road-tested confidence. The band, fortified by this strong sense of sonic identity and a self-assurance in their new material -- and in contrast to their critically acclaimed 2021 debut Modern Fiction and 2019 EP Get Bleak, both self-recorded and self-produced in a Toronto basement -- wanted to bring Harm’s Way to life in a new city, with an outside producer, and with some of their favorite musicians. Working with producer Dave Vettraino, they enlisted a marquee cast of Windy City collaborators to round out the tracks on Harm’s Way, including: Finom’s Macie Stewart; Ratboys’ Marcus Nuccio; Dehd’s Jason Balla; and backing vocals from Julia Steiner (Ratboys), Nathan O’Dell (Dummy), Margaret McCarthy (Moontype), Rui De Magalhaes (Lawn), and Lindsey-Paige McCloy (Patio). The band’s touring drummer, Jonathan Pappo, and bassist Julia Wittman also appear on the LP. Harm’s Way’s lush, melodic swagger is clear from the first notes of opener “Hollowed Out.” A song about living with decline (inspired by a Toronto sinkhole), its bright, indelible catchiness serves in contrast to its lyrical unease. Anchored by Lewis’ shimmering electric guitar, “The Main Thing” laments growing apart from a person whose views you once shared while managing to toss in references to both the unglamorous lives of middle relief baseball pitchers and the occult. Other songs split the difference between country and krautrock, like the rollicking “Train Full of Gasoline,” which uses the 2013 Lac-Mégantic rail disaster in Quebec as a metaphor for self-destructive patterns. Harm’s Way is Duck Ltd.’s most intuitive and organic album yet, the result of keen observation, self-possessed songwriting, and a collaborative spirit. Building on the successes of their previous releases, the deeply relatable album displays a band operating at a nuanced, lyrical and musical best.

Led by the charismatic Oluko Imo, the group drew on the strong connections to Yoruba culture and Orisa traditions in Trinidad, looking to Africa for inspiration and reflecting the burgeoning Black Power movement of the time. Recorded at KH studios in Port of Spain, Ifetayo (Yoruba for ‘Love excels all’) was the group’s sole album release. Imo contributed lead vocals and played bass, kalimba, conga, flute and percussion, channelling music from both sides of the Atlantic into a distinctive and unique slice of Afro Trinidadian expression. On the A-side, title track ‘Oduduwa’ is a brooding slice of peak-era Transatlantic Afrobeat, blending a heartfelt plea for social justice and equality with a haunting piano line, shuffling drums and ethereal sax solo. The song takes its name from Oduduwa, the founder of the Ife Empire, who is also seen as a divine Orisha (deity) in Yoruba culture, one that is often evoked by musicians and activists in Trinidad as a signifier of Yoruba heritage on the island. On the flip, ‘Eyes Are Getting Red (Were Oju Le)’ is a long-lost slice of low slung Afrobeat featuring both Fela and Femi Kuti. Classic Nigerian horns and keys combine with Oluko Imo’s Caribbean-influenced guitar and Fela’s virtuoso sax solo, bridging the musical gap between Lagos and Port of Spain.

La Porte, the second studio album by Charlotte Kouklia aka Charlène Darling, finds the artist and her group building a self-contained musical world via French and English language vocals, and a minimalist backing of guitar, organ, bass and drums. At times recalling the feminist post-punk of The Raincoats, the avant songcraft of Brigitte Fontaine, or the psychedelic vignettes of Cate Le Bon, in truth Charlène Darling sounds like herself. The arrangements are playfully experimental, dubbed out percussion bubbling over the stripped back instrumentation, or rough tape edits disrupting lush harmonies, but never losing sight of the earworm hooks that make these songs so addictively listenable. Step through the door and walk right in. Charlotte is one quarter of the band Rose Mercie. After a beguiling series of DIY tape and CD-R releases, her first widely distributed solo album, Saint-Guidon, was released in 2019.
