OVERVIEW TANGK is IDLES’ forthcoming fifth album and follow-up to their GRAMMY-nominated Crawler. Co-produced by Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, The Smile, Beck), Kenny Beats (Denzel Curry, Vince Staples, Rico Nasty), and the band’s Mark Bowen, TANGK is, at its core, a love album, open to anyone who requires something to shout out loud in order to fend off any encroaching sense of the void, now or forever. It is a bona fide pop record in a way we’ve never heard from IDLES before, that is, something for everyone to pass around and share, communal anthems intended for overcoming our grievances. The word - pronounced “tank” with a whiff of the “g” - began as an onomatopoeic reference in-studio for the sound of a guitar tone, but has grown into a sigil for living in love. Joe sings on TANGK in a way we’ve never heard before, completing his transformation from post-punk firebrand into soul singing evangelist.

On June 29th, 2023, Jeremiah Chiu walked into the Vintage Synthesizer Museum (VSM) in Highland Park, Los Angeles, with no plan more specific than “let’s fire this stuu up and see what happens.” Exploring the VSM’s vast collection of classic, rare and staple synthesizers, he would sequence, trigger, and layer the machines together with help from VSM founder/curator Lance Hill. The resulting album – In Electric Time - was recorded in just two days, and edited to completion in the two days following. It was captured fully analog by engineer Ben Lumsdaine, who contributes performances on a few tracks himself. Cooper Crain (of Bitchin Bajas) makes an appearance as well; but ultimately the collection is an intuitive expression of organic electronic music conceptualized and created in-context by Chiu alone, as he calls on a lifetime of work in sound synthesis to paint a fulgent, refreshingly undercut sequence of cinematic sketches and in-process themes. In some ways, In Electric Time reflects the directness of Raymond Scott’s electronic studio recordings — with sharp cuts and room chatter — and, in others, it conjures the in-the-moment magic of Harmonia. Rich in the bluegrass tradition, yet equally versed in country balladry, folk, Americana, string bands, Gospel, and even indie blues-rock, the 15-song dazzler reflects a wealth of fresh ideas and precocious wisdom coursing through twin siblings, Leanna Price and Lauren Price Napier. With its arresting melodies intertwined in lush and dexterous harmonies, and supported by the finest of contemporary talent--not to mention some masterful special guests-this brilliant third effort from the duo not only revives and reflects the roots of the art form, but expands, with conscious reverence, upward and outward, budding with ambitious intent. As for producers, their dream list had Ronnie McCoury at the top. The venerable mandolinist had become a mentor and friend over the past decade, first meeting the twins at the DelFest Academy, a week-long bluegrass instructional camp coinciding with the annual DelFest event celebrating the music of Ronnie’s father, and bluegrass icon, Del McCoury. Ronnie had guested on guitar for the Sisters’ EP, as well, and agreed to produce the forthcoming sessions. “We love what Ronnie does in the bluegrass realm, but also beyond that,” says Lauren. Decamping to The Tractor Shed in Goodlettsville, Tennessee in the fall of 2021, the sisters and McCoury discussed potential song choices. Meticulously, they honed a track list that included road-tested staples, original instrumentals, and more than a few challenging suggestions from McCoury. “We wanted to make something that we felt really put our stamp on the industry; that we felt proud of every aspect of it,” Leanna says.

‘Disco Not Disco’ preceded the punk funk revolution by two years.”- Resident Advisor. Strut introduces a new special edition repress of the influential first volume of ‘Disco Not Disco’, compiled by Dave Lee and Sean P, pressed on translucent yellow vinyl 3LP as part of the label’s 25th Anniversary. ‘Disco Not Disco’ was a perfectly timed compilation back in 2000. Released when interest in the myths, history and playlists of original New York clubs like Paradise Garage and The Loft was at its peak, the album drew on the outer limits of leftfield disco championed by Levan and Mancuso, bringing together unlikely dancefloor anthems by rock acts like Yoko Ono and Ian Dury, obscurities from cottage labels like BC and Splash and selected oddities from the unique mind of avant-garde hero, Arthur Russell. It was essentially a celebration of the sonic melting pot in New York during the early ‘80s, an era when punk had burnt itself out and disco had become commercial and saccharine; in its place, the post-punk movement threw up brilliant oddities which tore up the accepted rulebook. Since its release, the compilation title has become a by-word for a whole genre of music and remains a landmark collection of its time. This new pressing is a welcome return for an essential celebration of disco’s difficult cousins. The album features full artwork and is pressed across 3 x Translucent Yellow Vinyl LP’s.

Reaching the end of a strenuous journey beset by turmoil and loss, Madder Mortem is finally ready with their 8th studio album “Old Eyes, New Heart”. Emerging five years after its predecessor "Marrow", the time in which “Old Eyes, New Heart” was made has been a troubled one for the Madders - and in the winter of 2023, Agnete and BP’s dad Jakob passed away. Having always been a huge supporter of the band, Jakob’s backing was essential in launching the band's recording career almost 30 years ago. Being an artist himself, Jakob had prepared two paintings especially for the album and with the adaptation and additional design by long-term Madder collaborator Costin Chioreanu, the cover artwork for “Old Eyes, New Heart” was completed. Even though Jakob didn’t live to see the finished album, he would have been immensely proud to see his art on the cover, and the album is dedicated to his memory. Lyrically and musically, the album deals with hope, disappointment, and the ambivalence between them. It is music from old hearts and deep roots, with new eyes open to the unlimited possibilities of 12 notes, but always with the desire to write a good, honest song. Recorded and produced by guitarist BP M. Kirkevaag, it shows one of Norway’s most interesting bands embracing a multitude of directions spanning from post-metal heaviness to soft Americana grooves and everything in between. Fronted by one of the genre's greatest and most unique voices, it is an album full of surprises, but at all times unmistakably Madder.

Matthew Goodheart And Broken Ghost Consort Five Apparitions Matthew Goodheart’s latest release Five Apparitions is a collaborative composition combining live performers, electronics, and computer-controlled acoustic instruments. Over the course of four movements, the work explores a shifting mosaic of textures & interactions using algorithmic composition, improvisation, and performer choice. Using the technique of re-embodied sound, in which small surface speakers are attached to instruments thereby turning the instruments themselves into a kind of speaker, composer Matthew Goodheart orchestrates an evolving world of complex timbres that stands as a hybrid between electronic and acoustic music, performance, and sound installation. Lazy Sunday were a brand new band working on songs for their first demo in March of 2020. Rani Gupta and B Okabe, who both share guitar and vocal duties, had been hanging out and planning for a new pop-punk band that was both nostalgic and honest. Then, the pandemic hit. While many new bands were likely derailed by months of self-isolation, Lazy Sunday finished writing their demo through shared voice memos and FaceTime. By the time they were practicing again in person, Gupta, Okabe, bassist KT Austin, and drummer Jeremy Dunlap were ready to assemble a full length of what Austin calls a “90’s nostalgia pop-punk” record about love. The band says, "This record is all about big feelings from the past, present and future. Big firsts, big lasts, and letting go.” Songs like Differentiation and Flutter bust out of the gate with classic pop-punk tempos layered with Gupta's and Okabe’s dreamy melodies. The album’s finale, Closer, reveals Lazy Sunday’s ability to play slower, spacier songs and showcases the production work of Dunlap, who recorded the record, and Will Killingsworth (of Dead Air Studios), who mastered the record. A very "MGMT MGMT album" which the band describes as "a group of songs about love and change, first and foremost." Loss Of Life was produced by MGMT and Patrick Wimberly (Solange, Lil Yachty, MGMT), with mixing and additional production by Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Interpol, Spoon). The album includes the first ever MGMT song with a feature, courtesy Christine and the Queens. The album artwork has been licensed from John Baldessari's estate and is an artwork titled Noses & Ears, Etc. (Part Two). Formed in 2002, MGMT released their era-defining debut album Oracular Spectacular in 2007. One of the most influential albums of the '00’s - it went on to sell over 2 million copies worldwide and was certified Gold or Platinum in over 10 major territories, including double platinum in UK, Platinum in Australia, Gold in France and Platinum in the USA. It gave the world evergreen hits such as “Kids”, “Electric Feel” and “Time to Pretend” which have inspired, and continue to inspire new generations of artists and music fans alike to this day - those three songs combined have been streamed over 2 billion times on audio streaming platforms since released. OVERVIEW Real Estate’s sixth full-length album Daniel was recorded in an ebullient nine-day spree in RCA Studio A, in Nashville with celebrated producer and songwriter Daniel Tashian. In 11 compulsively tuneful songs, they connect the uninhibited wonder of their earliest work with the earned perspective of adulthood. Martin Courtney actually learned of Tashian through his daughter, who adored an album he’d produced, Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour. The band reached out and spotted an instant connection despite their distinct wheelhouses—the Grammy-winning Nashville country-pop guy who’d helmed several smashes and the Northeast indie rock quintet with narcotic guitars. Real Estate had been thinking about R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People and ’90s “soft-rock radio,” the background music of their youth. Tashian helped lead them back toward it, toward an improved edition of the less self-conscious band they’d been at the start. Several days into recording, all five members of Real Estate were discussing album titles when someone suggested “Daniel,” simply because it seemed funny to bestow a human name upon a record. Was it for Daniel Tashian? Maybe. Was it a nod to The Replacements’ Tim? Possibly. Was it the sign of a band that has now been around long enough to take its music seriously without taking itself or its perception too seriously? Absolutely.

Like its immediate predecessor, Beasts Of No Nation (also 1989), and its followup, Underground System (1992), the album finds Fela continuing to campaign for human rights and social change despite the relentless beatings, jailings and general harassment he had received from successive military regimes since the start of the 1970s. ORIGINAL SUFFERHEAD This edition of Original Sufferhead is a major event. With the release of box set #5, and now on this reissue, the title track of this magnificent album is presented in its fulllength, 25 minutes 24 seconds glory. While preparing the master disc for the box set, our engineer Jedi, Colin Young, discovered four minutes of “lost” material on the B-side of the original pressing, including a superb keyboard solo by Fela. This had been omitted from subsequent reissues. The restored version used here starts and finishes with Fela’s keyboard work, a typically venturesome blend of futurism and visceralism. Original Sufferhead was the first album Fela released under Egypt 80’s name (he had disbanded Afrika 70 in 1979). On the title track, arguing from the personal to the political, Fela describes the inhuman treatment and poor living conditions experienced by working class Nigerians, the people he called sufferheads. In “Power Show,” Fela sings about the two-tier system dividing Nigerian society, in which the rich get treated one way and the poor another. This edition is pressed on ewuro (opaque light green) vinyl.

IKOYI BLINDNESS Fela used the cover of Ikoyi Blindness to announce his change of middle name from Ransome, which he now considered a slave name, to Anikulapo, which means “he who carries death in his pouch.” The front cover shows Ransome crossed out and Anikulapo added above it. Fela also used the album cover to announce the Africanisation of Africa 70’s name, changing it to Afrika 70. In the title track, Fela draws attention to the economic chasm separating the haves and have-nots of Nigerian society, contrasting the get-rich-at-all-costs mindset of the residents of the prosperous Lagos suburb Ikoyi with the more community-minded attitude of the poor inhabitants of the Mushin, Maroko, Ajegunle and Somolu neighborhoods. Ikoyi residents are blind to the sufferings of less fortunate people, says Fela.

Fela returns to the topic on the second track, “Gba Mi Leti Ki N’Dolowo (Slap Me Make I Get Money).” In Lagos in 1975 and 1976, there had been an upsurge in police and military personnel assaults on people in the street; motorists were commonly pulled out of their vehicles and given a whipping for minor traffic offenses. Scandalously, the police and soldiers were being allowed to get away with corruption in broad daylight. In the lyric, Fela demands that the judiciary administer the law equally, without fear or favor. This edition is pressed on iresi (opaque white) vinyl.

The origins of The Cult began a few years earlier with Southern Death Cult forming in 1981 and releasing their sole, self-titled album posthumously in 1983. Dreamtime was an epic start to The Cult’s long and amazing career. The album is often overlooked due to their future massive albums, but it has become legendary amongst fans, and marks the beginning of their definitive sound. Goth and psychedelic leaning, Dreamtime was included by Kerrang in a list of essential goth albums you need to know, stating “The reborn band’s debut album sounds big, but in a different way to their latter output, while Ian Astbury’s fascination with the indigenous cultures of America and Australia was channeled into songs like Spiritwalker, Horse Nation and the driving title-track.” Ian spent his early teenage years in Eastern Canada and was exposed to indigenous culture at this time, and soaked in all he could. The native influence is strong on this album. The lyrics on “Horse Nation” are inspired by “Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee” and many other songs on the album refer to indigenous culture. The Cult has remained an important and enduring force in the rock music world. The band has released 11 fulllength and has earned critical acclaim for its powerful live performances. As conceptual as Xiu Xiu's fusion of post-punk, gamelan, synth pop, folk, and noise might seem, the group's music never feels overly cerebral or detached. On the contrary, it's usually brimming over with often contradictory emotions: love, hate, sex, violence, fear, and humor cling together so tightly in Jamie Stewart's songs that they can't be separated. Harsh and beautiful words and sounds remain intertwined on La Forȇt, which ranks among Xiu Xiu's subtlest, and scariest, albums. Stewart and company trade the deceptively bouncy electronics of 2004's Fabulous Muscles for a more subdued but eclectic backdrop that includes vibraphone, autoharp, and harmonium as well as the more expected keyboards and guitars. The folk and classical elements explored on earlier work like Knife Play and Fag Patrol resurface, beginning on La Forȇt's opening track, "Clover." Delicate acoustic guitars, vibraphone, and double bass play an aching, hesitant melody, while Stewart intones, "Don't don't don't walk like my single hope/I can only say it so many times," mining the song's pauses for all the beauty and pain that they're worth. Later, "Ale"'s clarinets -- which make the song sound like a kissing cousin to Björk's "Anchor Song" -- add to the air of barely restrained heartbreak and disgust. The scary-pretty synth pop of "Muppet Face" is the closest the album comes to the typical Xiu Xiu sound (if there is such a thing), and shows off Stewart's expressive beat programming. La Forȇt's may be more delicate and less immediate than some of Xiu Xiu's other work (especially Fabulous Muscles), but at its best, it may have even more impact because of that. "Mousey Toy" compares a callously casual seduction to a cat's plaything, while "Pox" is filled with poetic insults ("This plastic coffin always in the shade of your sickening daughters and your idiotic hobbling wife/This is where I live/Community college is waiting for them") that sting even more because they take a while to unravel. Stewart also remains as political as ever: "Saturn" buries horrible threats under layers of industrial static and noise, and it's not hard to guess who the George mentioned in the song might be. As accomplished as it is, La Foret lags a little bit toward the end -- "Dangerous You Shouldn't Be Here" feels like a poem that shouldn't have been set to music, and "Yellow Raspberry"'s strident shouting works against its thoughtful, detailed lyrics. Even more than some of the group's other albums, La Forȇt seems guided by dream logic, flowing and crashing unexpectedly. And, like a dream, Xiu Xiu's music is unique, difficult to describe, and utterly compelling once you give yourself over to it.

ver the course of her career, spanning three-plus decades, Lætitia Sadier has never shied away from the hard topics, or stopped advocating for the possibility of self determination and emancipation in the face of the powers that be, conscious or unconscious. This is an essential part of the foundation she co-built with Stereolab, showcasing her spiritual, scientific and sociopolitical inquiries. She’s continued this process with Monade and under her own name and as a writer/singer/musician whose every album acts as a report on her journey of the self through time, space and the collective. On Rooting For Love, the report is set alight by the heat of a turbulent world, collapsing institutions and Lætitia’s fully engaged process of expression as well as orchestration. The opening number, “Who + What” elucidates the central issue of the album: a call for a collective striving for Gnosis — an inquisitive outlook that will lend clues to the traumatized civilizations of Earth, allowing us to evolve away from millennia of alienation and suffering and towards the achievability of healing. The musical arrangements help to embody the layers of the issue, as with “Who + What”’s combination of organ, synths, guitar, bass, trombone, drum programming, vibraphone and zither, all working along intricate paths of chord and tempo changes. Leading from the inside is the implacable presence of Lætitia Sadier, herself interacting with a vocal assembly of men and women billed as The Choir. The regular reappearance of The Choir throughout Rooting For Love is a reminder of this music being one of a people in critical mass, in addition to an evolution that continues to deepen the rich harmonic fields in which Lætitia plays. Past wounds are addressed again and again in the libretto,
as the music provides a transformational balm to aid the healing process. The melodic funk of bassist Xavi Muñoz leads a Chic-adjacent slink to the occasional dance floor vibes and no-wave rockouts, while Hannes Plattemier and Emma Mario take turns in mixing the tracks and informing the far reaches of the material, with vibes, additional drum programming and synths alongside a talented cast of players and singers from Lætita’s Source Ensemble and beyond. Whether drawing inspiration from Zen Shiastu training, or the lyrics of Véronique Vincent, (lyricist and singer for Aksak Maboul, and once upon a time, lead singer of the French Honeymoon Killers), Lætitia faces the truth without flinching. The shadows, whatever stuff they are made of — individual and collective, present and ancestral — need to be recognized and acknowledged, because the more we heal within ourselves, the more undivided we become in the face of looming Neofascist/ Neoliberal narratives polluting the inner and outer landscapes. As with the cover image of the winter tree mirrored by the word patterns of Rooting For Love, Lætitia maintains that how we heal the world that’s coming, and what we make of it, will be a co-creation. The quality of our imagination, the orientation we give our thoughts and the capacity to bring love to ourselves and the world are a first step. Alongside her collaboration with Modern Cosmology, last year’s incredible What Will You Grow Now?, as well as her continued tours with a reformed Stereolab, Rooting For Love finds Lætitia back in the world, once again urging all our grounded inner alignment and heart power to make us better equipped for creating what’s to come.

Japan are the holy holy sounds of Ghost. Their collective, clearly inspired by various forms of transcendental music throughout history, created a new syncretic psychedelia with these albums, mixing the texture and vibe of multinational forms of traditional music, with strummed antique stringed instruments and the haunting wail of a recorder on top of their heavy beats and guitars. The considerable depth of this approach was explored through 2014 over another five Ghost LPs, as well as the further explorations to the present day of leader Masaki Batoh, as a solo artist and with The Silence, Damon & Naomi, Helena Espvall and most recently, nehan.

These first three Ghost titles were originally released by P.S.F. on CD in 1990, 1992 and 1994, respectively, radiating enigma and energy in palpable waves with their original sound. After the acclaim that greeted Drag City’s 1996 US release of Lama Rabi Rabi, we quickly reissued all three on vinyl — and they quickly went out of print! At which point, Ghost had Snuffbox Immanence and Free Tibet ready to go. And then, Hypnotic Underworld. And then, and then . . . . Now, it’s been 25 years since they were last offered on vinyl. In the twenty-year sweep of Ghost history, these first three releases qualify as primitive early Ghost — sort of like a German Os Mutantes (or per-

haps a Brazilian Amon Düül). The subterranean presence of a diversity of progressive/avant classic rock influences (Pink Floyd, Incredible String Band, Captain Beefheart, Scott Walker, Led Zeppelin, Popol Vuh, Third Ear Band, to name but a few) provokes further synthesis, making for an entirely new meditation on the traditional order of psychedelic music. The first two studio albums, each one an iteration of Ghost’s unique lysergic folk music, were followed by the monolithic “live in various places” happening of Temple Stone, which raised the trippiness levels considerably. But this was only the end of the beginning . . . .

The Trashmen's defining moment, 1963's "Surfin' Bird," is perhaps the ultimate lightning-in-a-bottle record. Their first true studio recording, it captures the group's interminable energy and mastery of live performance. But it also is the culmination of spirit and experiment that turned it into something new and, from the perspective of 50 years, unique. This collection shows them to be variously a first-rate surf band, a great protopunk outfit, solid rockers with the raw essence of the earliest originators of the sound, and adept enough to work in some comedy and country. This scope of ability and interest is probably the true basis of the band's following now. But "Surfin' Bird" has more tenacity than other bands' entire better-performing catalogs, and with it, the Trashmen created a work that is arguably today the most relevant release from that storied decade.

Since the 1990s, the New York jazz scene has come to exemplify the city's reputation as a haven for immigrants. Drummer Rodrigo Recabarren, bassist Pablo Menares, and pianist Yago Vazquez arrived in the late 2000s as part of that movement: Recabarren and Menares from the Chilean capital of Santiago, Vazquez from the Galicia region in northern Spain. Their friendship led to the formation of the trio and the release of their debut album, Desde La Lluvia (2017), winning the Martin Codax Music Award 2018 for Best Jazz Artist.

As the trio prepared for their sophomore release, Familia, the pandemic grounded them thousands of miles from each other. The three musicians deepened their study of the rich rhythmic language of folkloric music as it has manifested throughout the Spanish-speaking world, especially in South America, where Menares and Recabarren grew up. Vazquez's "Terra" makes the connection between the Galician rhythm xota and the South American rhythm chacarera. Vazquez named "Aninovo" ('new year' in Galician) for its exploration of musical possibilities also from the chacarera rhythm.

Menares' "Después de todo" was originally a solo guitar piece he wrote in 2020, referencing a poem by Chilean poet Jorge Teillier. “Santiago" is an important title for Recabarren, being the name of his son and the home of his family; the music of Familia honors both the New York jazz family of three that the trio have forged, as well as their respective families of origin thousands of miles away. Pictures in a Dream is the fourth album from Trondheim’s finest prog band Arabs in Aspic. Originally released by the Italian label Black Widow Records in 2013, the album received great immediate feedback internationally and resulted in a good amount of concerts on the continent. Their love for experimenting with sounds and recordings shines through on this album, with some rather unconventional solutions - Using lots of microphones to capture the sound of the room instead of the sources, 9 microphones for the Hammond organ, and so on... This resulted in a lot of tweaking and not so much control – but definitely a different sound than what was common in 2013. A concert with Ruphus and Høst in Body in 2010 resulted in legendary Ruphus singer Rune Sundby guesting on two songs on the album. This re-release is based on all of the original recordings, but everything is re-edited and remixed from scratch. Some of the pitfalls of the many microphones in the room have been removed. Some of the vocals/lyrics have been replaced with lyrics from the archive – and some new ideas, to make the album as good as possible. A few instrumental overdubs have also been done. The result is a more punchy, clean version of the album. The band has also changed the song sequence to create a new listening experience with a quite different mood than the original release. This is the fourth of six reworked & remastered Arabs in Aspic re-releases on Karisma Records, meticulously mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo (White Willow, Opium Cartel, Solstein + + +) in Dude Ranch Studios.

Victim of your Father’s Agony is the fifth album from Trondheim’s finest prog band Arabs in Aspic. Originally released by the Italian label Black Widow Records in 2015, this album may be their most diverse to date, due to the large number of songwriters compared to the other records. This new version of the album starts with a short instrumental inspired by the band’s first concert in France, playing a gig in the sunset, 300 meters from the most beautiful beaches of the Atlantic with 2000 ecstatic prog nerds.«One», is an oldie that didn’t quite fit in on the previous couple of albums, and has been a staple in their live shows since 2009. “Italian Class” started as an instumental called “The Turk and the Italian Restaurant”. With no proper Italian vocabulary, they cobbled together bits and pieces from the most known Italian nursery rhymes. The song was performed live at a festival to much-shared enthusiasm. Some found it brilliant, and others were offended or embarrassed on our behalf. «Sad Without You» is about the sudden realization that you’re eventually going to lose your loved ones. “The Flight of the Halibut” features no less than 16 lead guitars in unison. This re-release is based on all of the original recordings, but everything is re-edited and remixed from scratch. All original recordings have been used, and a few overdubs have also been done. “Syndenes magi” was the sixth Arabs in Aspic album, and a turning point in their long career. After “Pictures in a Dream” and “Victim of your Father’s agony” the structure of “the new Arabs” was set. They had lots of songs ready to go, but after attending a spectacular King Crimson gig in Oslo they decided that their new material wasn’t up to par, and they had to do better. The next day Jostein Smeby went back home to Trondheim, and wrote what turned into the 12-minute song «Syndenes Magi». He called up cover artist Julia and asked her to write down some keywords for a concept album. She delivered a good dose of keywords about anxiety, which inspired the composition of the rest of the album. The album was originally written in English, but countless attempts to make the vocals blend in with the music failed. Smeby tried to write a verse in Norwegian instead, and there it was. Then, the rest was remade in Norwegian as well. The album was released on Apollon Records in the fall of 2017, and received a lot of international attention, despite having only Norwegian lyrics. Jostein Smeby says: “When it comes to the remix of the album, that is the hardest project we’ve ever done. We were really happy with the record – so if it was going to get remixed, then the result had to be even better. The band wasn’t entirely in agreement about a remix at all, but the composer had some unfinished business regarding English lyrics. I tried singing the original English lyrics again. And it sounded just as bad as last time. What do you do then? Well, you delete all the Norwegian vocals and work until it gets better. Working with the remix and remaster of «The Magic of Sin» has taken more than twice the amount of time than writing, recording and mixing the original version took. “ This is the sixth and final reworked & remastered Arabs in Aspic re-releases on Karisma Records, meticulously mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo (White Willow, Opium Cartel, Solstein + + +) in Dude Ranch Studios. The limited first pressing of the LP version comes in a special tri-fold cover revealing more of Julia Proszowska’s striking cover art made for the album – and if combined with the first version of the “Syndenes Magi” LP, all five panels of the painting will be visible.

The English duo Persher, Arthur Cayzer (Pariah) and Jamie Roberts (Blawan), take the same subversive, boundaryless approach to extreme music that underpins their electronic explorations. Their individual singles output are highly anticipated in the dance world in part because of their affinity expression beyond a trend. The debut album Sleep Well is ferocious and innovative. Cayzer and Roberts take a decidedly unconventional approach to writing, using the full potential of the studio in their exploration of extreme music. What sounds like a live band performance is more often than not an amalgam of many different sessions, the duo applying techniques from electronic music to heavier sonics. Recording in Roberts’ studio at Funkhaus, the home of the former East German state-owned radio station, Cayzer would improvise long takes on guitar and bass, contorted and mutated by Robert’s using his extensive modular setup to add weight and texture. This primordial ooze of raw sonics was then chopped up and reassembled into bristling hooks and corrosive atmospheres. The duo’s playful, exuberant approach to music is evident in their absurdist themes and lyrics. Much of the album is inspired by “really disgusting food”. Medieval Soup from the Milkbar refrences the epically bad meal of gray, gruel-like soup, and seeps into the track’s noxious slurry and stomach-churning riffs. “Portable Aquarium” was born of a cup of herbal tea over flowing with foliage. Their playful and often self-deprecating sense of humor allows them to find inspiration in the smallest of life’s events. Persher’s Sleep Well provides a daring, revelatory expansion on heavy music’s myriad mutations. The duo uses their production skills and their humor to embrace the powerful release they find in extreme. Persher’s debut album exudes the sheer joy of making music unconstrained by genre-boundaries, as gleefully weird as it is visceral and primal.

Serving up art-pop for the anthropocene, Springs Eternal is the Mercury-nominated, critically acclaimed artist William Doyle’s most ambitious and most playful creation to date. Taking a panoramic view of the ecstasies and agonies of life in the 2020s, the record asks how we exist as fragile flesh and blood – our hearts beating and our minds racing – in an unprecedented, almost unimaginable time of runaway climate destruction and technological expansion. Springs Eternal presents a strange and thrilling cast of characters – from cowboys to castaways – who just might be Doyle, once or twice removed. “Most of the songs are in the first-person, but rather than being autobiographical, I was trying to imagine hyperreality versions of myself,” Doyle says. “What if decisions I made in my life had resulted in the self of each particular song? How many degrees of separation am I from those realities? It’s a frightening thought, and frightening thoughts often make for good songs.” Across 11 tracks, we hear from narrators teetering on the precipice of global disaster, heartbreak, addiction, indoctrination and mental illness, until they pass into the great unknown. The first revolutionary fracture in The Fall was the sudden departure of guitarist Martin Bramah. Commonly understood as the only viable challenger to Mark E Smith's dominance of the band, Bramah was The Fall's first singer and primary songwriter at the start. His subsequent group, Blue Orchids, was originally a reconstitution of the first recorded line-up of The Fall, without Mark, but with another slightly later Fall member, Eric McGann. After slight revisions in the lineup, Blue Orchids created a singular sound of maniacally aberrant psych on two thrilling singles - "The Flood" and "Work" - before recording one of the most imperfectly perfect debuts in what could no longer really be called 'rock and roll'. 'The Greatest Hit (Money Mountain)' eschews the frenetic energy of those singles to present itself as the greatest 'morning after the trip' albums ever - Martin and Una's wonderful explanations of the experiential backdrop to "Sun Connection" take up nearly as much space as those of all the other songs combined! Without exception, the songs are brilliant, majestic and memorable . . . plus it's possible that more covers of songs from 'The Greatest Hit' have been recorded by bands of credibility and renown than from any single Fall LP (although we're counting!), with near-contemporaneous versions arising from Fish & Roses, Slovenly, Dustdevils and Aztec Camera and many others since. Never reissued on vinyl since its 1982 release, due to objections from the WB Yeats estate for the album's musical interpretation of the author's "Mad As The Mist And Snow" (now in public domain!), this deluxe edition includes a bonus album with two unreleased prealbum demos, two further demos released only on long out-of-print cassette compilations from more than forty years ago, and scorching live set featuring several of their early songs, extensive liner notes from Martin Bramah and Una Baines, a reproduction of the original lyric fold-over booklet and (with the 2LP version), a download card. The original artwork for the album and booklet have been restored painstakingly, and as Bramah himself says, "It's better than the original." The original versions of “I Can Tell You’re Scum” and “Inside Me” were released on our split record with Guttersnipe (from Leeds, UK) at the height of lockdown in 2020. The label immediately disbanded and the whole thing fell flat, so we reworked these tracks to give them a new lease on life. Martina (vocalist/guitarist) built a fully functional warhorn out of septic pipes that we ripped out of some rich dude’s bathroom at a crappy renovation job. It was was pitched down, distorted and included on the intro of ”Gravity System”. All songs were recorded in our windowless rehearsal room, mixed by us and mastered by Daniel Husayn (North London Bomb Factory) in 2023. The album is dedicated to Schtinky (2012 - 2023), our sweet cat, who unfortunately left this mortal plane before the album was completed.

After a two-decade interlude, Jim O’Rourke’s Moikai returns with Spectral Evolution, a major new work by Rafael Toral. Making his name in the mid-1990s with influential guitar drone platters like Sound Mind Sound Body and Wave Field (both reissued by Drag City in recent years), Toral has never been one to rest on his laurels repeating his past glories. In the early years of the 21st century, Toral laid the guitar aside, along with the focus on extended tones that had defined much of his music until that point. He began his “Space Program,” a thirteen-year investigation of the performance possibilities of an ever-expanding set of custom electronic instruments, played with a fluid phrasing and rhythmic flexibility inspired by jazz. Dedicated to honing his skills on these idiosyncratic instruments, Toral has performed with them extensively both solo and in many collaborations, including in his Space Quartet, where his mini-amplifier feedback integrates seamlessly into the frontline of a classic post-free jazz quartet rounded out with saxophone, double bass, and drums. Since 2017, Toral’s work has been entering a new phase, often still centered around the arsenal of self-built instruments developed in the Space Program, but with a renewed interest in the long tones and almost static textures of his earlier work; he has also, after more than a decade, returned to the electric guitar. Spectral Evolution is undoubtedly Toral’s most sophisticated work to date, bringing together seemingly incompatible threads from his entire career into a powerful new synthesis, both wildly experimental and emotionally affecting. The record begins with a brief “Intro” that sets the stage for the unique sound world explored throughout the remainder of its duration: over sparkling clean guitar figures, Toral stages a duet between two streams of modulated feedback, seeming less electronic than like mutant takes on a muted trumpet and an ocarina. This segues seamlessly into the stunning “Changes,” where a dense array of Space instruments solo with wild abandon over a thick carpet of slowly moving chords, growing increasingly chaotic over the course of eight minutes yet always fastened to the lush harmonic foundation. On these and many other moments on the record, Toral manages the almost miraculous feat of having his self-built electronic instruments (which in the past he had seen as “inadequate to play any music based on the Western system”) play in tune. In an unexpected sidestep away from any of his previous work, the chord changes that underpin many of the episodes on Spectral Evolution are derived from classic jazz harmony, including takes on the archetypal Gershwin “Rhythm changes” and Ellington–Strayhorn’s “Take the ʻA’ Train,” albeit slowed to such an extent that each chord becomes a kind of environment in its own right. Threading together twelve distinct episodes into a flowing whole, Spectral Evolution alternates moments of airy instrumental interplay with dense sonic mass, breaking up the pieces based on chord changes with ambient “Spaces.” At points reduced to almost a whisper, at other moments Toral’s electronics wail, squelch, and squeak like David Tudor’s live-electronic rainforest. Similarly, his use of the guitar encompasses an enormous dynamic and textural range, from chiming chords to expansive drones, from crystal clarity to fuzzy grit: on the beautiful “Your Goodbye,” his filtered, distorted soloing recalls Loren Connors in its emotive depth and wandering melodic sensibility. The product of three years of experimentation and recording, and synthesizing the insights of more than thirty years of musical research, Spectral Evolution is the quintessential album of guitar music from Rafael Toral.

With Jeff Panall (Songs: Ohia), Justin Brown (Palliard), Matthew Barnhart (Tre Orsi) and a cast of fellow travelers, the group has to its credit a trio of EPs, the acclaimed double album Ambertron (which improbably owned its otherwise-ill-timed March 20th, 2020 release date) and now...Roughrider, the band’s second full-length. Roughrider pulls from all the rest stops Mint Mile have traversed to get here. “Sunbreaking” opens the album with a timeless chord progression, hidden melodies sketched throughout the margins. “Interpretive Overlook” is shockingly bare, dwelling on perspective and differing vantage points, with its final line (“This place so old...it needs something new”) both certain and open-ended. Songs like “Halocline” have become the heart of Mint Mile – Crazy Horse-fluent pieces that let Brown’s pedal steel do heavy lifting until the finale, where every instrument pours in all it can. The kinetic energy the band brings – aided by excellent alto saxophone (hold onto that thought for a second) – indicates that the group is far from out of new ways to immerse themselves in this world. “Empty Island” is perhaps the band’s finest moment as “rockers,” and the record’s second track, the seven-minute “Brigadier,” loses itself completely in its main metaphor, unmooring Roughrider from any convenient frame of reference almost immediately. Contributions from cellist Alison Chesley and Corvair’s Heather Larimer, both long in Midyett’s orbit, are welcome, although nothing prepares one for hearing Nina Nastasia – whom Silkworm covered on an EP over twenty years ago – sing Roughrider’s aching closing track. Nastasia gets some of the album’s darkest lyrics, and “I Hope It’s Different” sounds as beautiful as its last stanza (“Scrub off your history / Don’t learn / Don’t remember anything”) is uncomfortable. That saxophone on “Halocline?” It is provided by founding Silkworm guitarist and vocalist Joel R.L. Phelps, a truly momentous occasion for those of us who still listen to In the West regularly. His contributions are a fascinating coda to “Halocline,” and on “S c ent” he is possibly the backbone of the entire song. Change and “the new” hover all over Roughrider’s lyrics and subjects, from the peaking sunrise in the opening track to Nastasia’s fervent hope echoed by the title of the album’s closing number. In that sense, it’s not surprising that the song that most prominently features Phelps is the one that sounds the least like anything he or Midyett have ever done, together or separately. Every trip through Roughrider is its own look, a new perspective on constant themes, with fresh elements coming to the fore. – Rosy Overdrive

Shika Shika is proud to present Campo de Cielo, a collaboration between Coro Qom Chelaalapi and producer Lagartijeando. The release celebrates the 60th anniversary of the indigenous choir from Northwest Argentina, making it the longest-running continuously active musical group in Latin America. Following their first release together in 2019, Campo del Cielo marks the second collaboration between the choir and producer Matias Zundel. The EP offers 3 tracks produced by Lagartijeando that experiment with Qom traditional sounds within the context of organic electronic downtempo. To complement this, Campo del Cielo includes 3 original unedited recordings of Coro Qom Chelaalapi, recorded by Lagartijeando in Resistencia, Chaco. About Campo del Cielo: Campo del Cielo (Field of the Sky) refers to a vast region of northern Argentina located in the Southern Chaco, bordering the provinces of Chaco y Santiago del Estero, that was struck by an iron meteor shower approximately 4000 years ago - the results of an asteroid exploding upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere. Qom mythology considers the "rocks" (aerolites) to have been drops of sweat from the sun; they were worshiped as such, and it was thought that at daybreak, when the skies were clear, some of these “rocks” would transform into trees (here, the myth suggests a notion of Earth’s fertilization through solar system events). The Qom and neighboring ethnic groups such as the Moqoit y Abipones considered Campo del Cielo to be a site in which the Sun and Earth shared an intimate connection, which could be seen as connection between the terrestrial and celestial, the mundane and the divine.
