This Issue: Joe Steinhardt at Don Giovanni
Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about?
Most of the artists I work with are playing in one of the music scenes or communities we work with. I’ve always approached running the label much more like a documentarian rather than a curator so it’s always been less about my personal taste as much as it is about what’s going on.
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
I’ve always been much more interested as a listener and a label owner in what is being expressed rather than how it is being expressed.
We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?
I don’t have any tattoos but I imagine this would be like asking someone to pick their favorite.
What is your stance on color vinyl?
How did you personally get started in the music industry?
I’m still trying to figure out if I’m actually in the music industry or not, but about five or six years after the label began I started to have a goal of getting our releases distributed and known nationally.
When and where did the label begin?
New Brunswick, NJ even though I was living in Boston at the time, in 2003 or 2004 depending on how accurate you want to be.
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
It comes from the movie Dirty Work but doesn’t really have any meaning behind it other than liking the way it sounded. If I knew I would still be doing the label all these years later I probably would have tried to think of something even dumber.
How has the label changed since it started?
The goals of providing a viable alternative to a corporately controlled music industry that can level the playing field and allow artists to be relevant nationally on their own terms, and putting artists and art first really hasn’t changed much since starting the label.
Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. I’m still handling almost everything myself the same way I did when I started but I’ve been really fortunate to be able to pay friends to help with things from time to time. Right now Mike Campbell handles press for us, and Jon Herroon fulfills our mail-order, he also runs his own label called Fire Hazard Records which I encourage you to check out.
What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?
All of it.
Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?
I’ve always been very community focused and so when the label started for our first ten years or so we only worked with bands in New Brunswick, NJ and the surrounding area. The internet and especially web 2.0 forced me to re-think what the community we were serving was a bit and so now it’s a little less region focused and the label has grown to serve a couple of different communities.
I abhor it and think it’s for children. Small children. I get that grown ups are into it but grown ups will also buy legos and go to disneyland without children.
Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs??
I’ve never really understood the cassette thing but CDs are the main format I listen to so we’ve always tried to make them for the same reason we made vinyl when no one understood why.
How would you describe the average fan of the label? I wouldn’t
In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days?
It is so important it should be mandated and regulated and it’s depressing that it’s not, at least within the independent community. What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
When I started Major Labels would illegally collude with Best Buy and WalMart to drive independent labels and local retail out of business. Today, large tech companies collude with each other and Major Labels to drive independent labels and local retail out of business.
Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance:
Princeton Record Exchange (Princeton, NJ), Angry Mom Records (Ithaca, NY), Record Lounge (Lansing, MI), and Double Decker (Allentown, PA) are some of my personal favorites.
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered?
Never been super concerned about that kind of thing and more concerned with relevance while the label is active so I appreciate you giving me the chance to talk about it!

The title of the sixth album from Californian singer-songwriter Nick Waterhouse is more than just the name of one of its tracks. The Fooler is both a clue and a red herring. The Fooler is the observed and the observer, narrator and subject, truth and lie. The Fooler is the shadow and reflection of a city the artist knows sufficiently well to wander with his eyes closed, and a place which very possibly never even existed. The Fooler is not so much an unreliable narrator as a constantly shifting perspective.
The Fooler is the new album by Nick Waterhouse, and it’s a lot. Recorded by Mark Neill (Black Keys; Los Straightjackets; Dave Cobb) in Valdosta, Georgia, it’s a song-cycle of sorts, the arc of the album telling a tale of a city and its denizens. “Many of the stories come from a feeling of plasticity,” says Waterhouse. “What is memory? What is time? What is love between two human beings like in this imaginary city? A phase shift occurred writing this record. I had a breakthrough in how to tell stories in songs, like an epiphany. I started realising how I could bend time in a lot of the things that weave through the record. I have a perspective as a narrator now, instead of being the occupant of the songs.”
Waterhouse released his debut album, Time’s All Gone, in 2012. His last record, Promenade Blue, came out in 2021. In his music you will hear echoes of things you might think you know, or believe you remember, filtered through the lens of a unique artistic perspective. You will hear rhythm and blues, garage rock, radio soul and wee-small-hours balladry – but reconfigured, made new. In Waterhouse’s music, the time is both now and then. The past is the present is the future. The sound is classic yet unclassifiable.
The Fooler was produced by Neill in his Soil of the South studio in Valdosta, Georgia. A former room in a ballet school, Soil of the South is in the great tradition of American studios such as Chess and Sun. “Not the place that looks like a spaceship, more like the place that
looks like a dentist office in 1965,” says Waterhouse. They tracked the album fast near the end of 2021. A further handful of days for overdubs and mixing early in 2022 and it was finished. “Making this record was like going to see the kung fu master on the mountain,” says Waterhouse. “You can probably draw a through line from my first record to this one, but this is something else entirely. The sonic landscape Mark designed is so much further into space, with reverb and depth.”
The result is a record that offers up new riches and fresh perspectives with every spin. From the hidden corners of ‘Hide & Seek’ and the roadhouse soul of ‘Play To Win’ to the primitive, attitudinal, chugging two-chord thrill of ‘Late In The Garden’, it builds inexorably to the drama of the title track and pulsing roll-and-rock of the final pay off, ‘Unreal, Immaterial’. Play it once and it sounds immediately like a collection of great songs. Play it again – and you will – and it feels like a novel or film slowly unveiling its secrets, kaleidoscopic in its narrative complexity. “Especially during this record, I started just becoming what Allen Ginsberg called a pure breath,” says the artist. “I was becoming pure breath with my ideas.”
"His style is all his own" - NPR
"Brisk, self-contained, a little mysterious, and catchy enough to revisit again and again" - Paste Magazine
"Waterhouse remains as spirited as he is studious, crooning and belting at all the appropriate moments with a little bit of swagger."All Music
"The second coming of soul, infusing a distinctly California surf-rock spin to the genre" - Vogue

e GRAMMY® Award-winning Okee Dokee Brothers have always traveled long distances in their grand adventures outward (songs inspired by their camping trips on the Mississippi River, Appalachian Trail, and Continental Divide). But for their next musical adventure, Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing have wandered deep inside the forest of imagination. Brambletown (release date: March 31, 2023) is a woodland creature mosaic where "critters can talk, trees can walk and nothing’s as it seems."
You’ll be guided by Junkyard Raccoon, Doctor Mole, Fox and Hare, Possum, and Old Badger. ey’ll take you on a journey full of mysterious dreams, rowdy celebrations, tempting distractions, and ancient wisdom. e Brothers' gorgeous melodies and unfussy lyrics ease listeners through these woods on a path that is both ancient and reborn. e songs bring up meaningful family conversations around topics like environmental concerns, interconnection, plant and animal wisdom, and how taking care of ourselves and our relationships is part of taking care of the world. In the end, Brambletown is a story of learning, or better yet, remembering how deeply all of us are connected. So, into the forest we go!

ALAN BRAXE, FRED FALKE & FRIENDS THE UPPER CUTS (2023 EDITION)
OVERVIEW
“Simplicity, sincerity … et voilà!”
If you want to understand how French producer Alan Braxe ended up making some of the most important house music records of the late 1990s and early 2000s, you need to understand his modus operandi.
Everything has to be simple; and everything has to be sincere. You hear this time and again in Braxe’s music, from the golden emotional minimalism of Stardust’s “Music Sounds Better With You”, a worldwide hit he produced with Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter and singer Benjamin Diamond, to the perfectly uncluttered house music strut of “Intro”, his underground anthem with Fred Falke.

The Upper Cuts, originally released in 2005, is a compilation that rounded up several of Braxe’s greatest hits. This newly reissued version of that album adds seven bonus tracks, including the classic Braxe / Falke production “Chrystal City,” which originally appeared on the “Rubicon” single; Braxe’s iconic remix of Britney Spears’ “Anticipating,” “You’ll Stay In My Heart,” a tear-jerking Braxe / Falke work that was never properly released; and two completely new tracks that show Braxe at his best.
“My music is simple,” Braxe (né Alain Quême) explains. “The drums are very simple; the production is simple and the construction is basic. And if you respect that, then your music can be timeless.”

Singer/Songwriter • First Album Of Original Songs in 7 YearsBEATNIK BRILLIANCE? BEAT-SPLOITATION? BEATS ME!
Before Sesame Street or Yo Gabba Gabba made art for kids that their parents understood on a whole other level, there were Hip Fables. Pop prose originally put to pulp by the pen of Steve Allen circa the ‘50s, which inspired a popular album and even a book titled Hip Fables (Simon & Schuster). The original recording featured Steve Allen on the piano accompanied by King Cool himself, Chicago DJ and Impulse! recording artist Al Jazzbeaux Collins!
In 1983, under the watchful eye of original producer Bob Thiele, Jazzbeaux and Allen were brought together once again. This time joined by ace percussionist Ray Mantilla (here referred to as “Watermelon Face” due to a swollen jaw), and one of the original hipsters, Slim Gaillard, to create an updated bilingual take on the cult favorite. In addition to the latin percussion Mantilla brought to the party, Gaillard shadowed Jazzbeaux to translate the madness into what they ultimately called Spanglish!
The results are four fab fables lling out the sides of an LP that’s suitable for jazz heads, beatniks, or children with strange taste.

60’s Minny-beat nuggs of bouncy bliss. Along with their Twin City topping cover of “Sugar & Spice” their Kay Bank studio master tapes featured stellar takes on Beau Brummels, Hollies, Pickett, & Yardbirds tunes, yet the best cuts are the swarm of Grasshoppers originals!
In the mid-to-late ‘60s, The Grasshoppers were kings of the Twin Cities music scene. They had it all — sweat-stained rock ‘n’ roll bona des, radio-ready pop songcraft, and harmonies tighter than a monk’s entertainment budget. They took their act all over the Midwest, from Iowa to Wisconsin to North Dakota, sometimes generating a Beatlemania-like female frenzy along the way.
But for all their regional renown, The Grasshoppers only released one single during their ve-year run, and not a note of their original material. More than ve decades after their breakup, Let It Be That Way rights that wrong, containing not only their lone 45 but 14 unheard tracks, including those original tunes.

• ON CAELIFERA GREEN VINYL PRESSED IN THE USA AND STUFFED WITH SOME GREAT JIM ALLEN LINER NOTES!
A track about an African king recorded in the back of a car wash commands $1,600.
At the makeshift Man-Ray Studios in Akron, Ohio, where barrels of soap were rolled away to make room for recording, guitarist Wilbur Niles and his then-girlfriend, Machelle McNeal, recorded "Ja Ja " Niles, a history major, titled it after King Jaja, who rose from slavery to become a wildly successful broker of palm oil in the 19th century
T The humid tranquil track would lead off the pair's first and only album together, 1979's Thrust It begins with an elliptical little electric-piano hook by McNeal, an accomplished musician without much jazz experience, accompanied by wind sounds The effect is of sparkles of sunlight through an otherwise dense sheet of fog
T Thrust exists in that blurry, liminal space between jazz, funk, soul, and R&B; ‘70s-era CTI comes to mind, but the unpolished vibe sloughs off that comparison, too. Even when “Summer Fun” goes for a four-on-the-floor feeling, the mid-fidelity production renders it diaphanous The more strident “Punk Funk” is a nod to Devo, whose road crew ran Man-Ray (“They’re punk; I’m the funk!” Niles explained with a laugh, on the Sounds Visual Radio podcast )
Y You’ll swear you ’ ve heard Thrust sampled somewhere in the hip-hop sphere; pull up “Ja Ja” on YouTube, and you’ll see a comment to that end: “Pete Rock sent me here ” (Google comes up short on that one, but WhoSampled cites the following track, “Summer Fun,” as appearing in Canadian house/electronica producer Daphni’s “Hey Drum” and British techno/house DJ and producer Trus’me’s “At the Disco.”
All in all, its place in the hip-hop and DJ worlds remains to be fully understood. But due to its charm and scarcity, Thrust remains undoubtedly popular among crate-diggers hence the hefty price of an original copy
The album’s ramshackle quality places it less in Kool and the Gang territory than something ripe for reappraisal by the Williamsburg set fitting nicely between one ’ s Arthur Russell, Ata Kak, and Little Beaver LPs And this carries through the rest of Thrust "Hypertension," "Untitled," "Quiet Isle," and "One Slave, One Gun "

JARED MATTSON PEANUT
Like many debut solo albums from musicians in bands, Jared Mattson’s Peanut didn’t originally come from a need to break away. As a composer for the Mattson 2, Jared Mattson was working up a batch of new songs through the winter of 2019-2020, looking ahead to the next album he and brother Jonathan Mattson, the blitzkrieging drummer, would record. As the pandemic hit stateside, Jared holed up in his home studio and kept developing the new music. And during that process it became increasingly clear to them that this wasn’t shaping up to be the next Mattson 2 album. This was a Mattson 1 album.
Jared had been absorbing the guitar work on records by reggae stalwarts Aswad and Burning Spear, and also the Police’s Andy Summer and the ways he gives songs space. And Jared wanted a prominent bass sound, too, where the guitar itself sometimes settles into the passenger seat so that the bass can drive. Lyrically, the album taps into our rattled world, where anxiety, loss, violence, and regret are sometimes pierced by the promise of love. The time spent working on the album was a profoundly introspective time as he reflected on past relationships while living through and writing during the pandemic, he also never lost sight of this truth about himself: Life is great with music.
One of the album’s standout highlights is “Burn Down Babylon,” which is propelled by the bass’s funk-you-say groove. You don’t often encounter many pop songs with so blunt an opening line as, “I got punched in the face last night by a neo-Nazi,” -- a true experience that was delivered many years ago in a bar brawl in Carlsbad, California. But to hear the music that goes along with this tale manages a vibe that is less melee and more backyard jubilee.
When “Please Come Here,” with an intro that slinks along like a Cadillac on a Sunday morning drive, kicks in, it’s typical of the album’s melodic pop flourishes, but the twist here is that the vocals are in Japanese (The Mattson 2 have toured Japan 20 times and covered many Japanese pop songs on 2018’s Vaults of Eternity: Japan). Ween’s “She Wanted to Leave” is the lone cover, but the way Jared reimagines the song makes it fit seamlessly within the album’s sonic template. The song’s inclusion was also a personal way to honor one of Jared’s best friends, who died from cancer two years ago. The two had always bonded over the song and marveled at its inherent beauty. Ultimately, Mattson’s solo debut unfolds like a string of fascinating clouds: These are not songs in a hurry; they shift around as they float by, and, most notably, they carry their unique kind of electric charge.

THE BETHS AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND, 2020
The anticipation is there in Elizabeth Stokes’ solo guitar riff under the opening lines of “I’m Not Getting Excited”: a frenetic, driving force daring a packed Auckland Town Hall to do exactly the opposite of what the track title suggests.
As the opener of The Beths’ Auckland, New Zealand, 2020 expands to include the full band, the crowd screeches and bellows. It’s a collective exhalation, in one of the few countries where live music is still possible.
The album title, and film of the same name, deliberately include the date and location, lead guitarist Jonathan Pearce says. “That’s the sensational part of what we actually did.” In a midpandemic world, playing to a heaving, enraptured home crowd feels miraculous.
In March 2020, everything seemed on track for another huge year for The Beths. Home after an 18-month northern hemisphere tour, they had just finished recording sophomore album Jump Rope Gazers and were primed for more extensive touring. But within days, New Zealand’s lockdown split the band between three separate houses. All touring was cancelled.
“It was existentially bad,” Stokes says. As well as worrying about economic survival, they lost something crucial to the band’s identity: live performance. “It’s a huge part of how we see ourselves... What does it mean, if we can’t play live?”
The band found an outlet through live-streaming, returning to the do-it-yourself mentality of their early days to connect with a global audience. The album and film have their genesis in that urge to share the now-rare experience of a live show, as widely as possible.
The fuzzy-round-the-edges live-streams pointed the way aesthetically. Native birds, wonkily crafted by the band from tissue paper and wire, festoon the venue’s cavernous ceiling while house plants soften and disguise the imposing pipes of an organ. The presence of the film crew isn’t disguised: much of the camerawork is handheld; full of fast zooms and pans.
With much of the material still fresh, the band was less focused on re-invention than playing “a good, fast rock show”, Pearce says. The tempo is up on crowd favourites “Whatever” and “Future Me Hates Me” (released as a live single on its third anniversary) as both band and audience feed off the mutual energy in the room.
Certain songs have taken on special resonance post-Covid. Pearce has found “Out Of Sight”, a tender rumination on long-distance relationships, hits particularly hard with live audiences.
Album closer “River Run” visibly brings Stokes to tears as a mix of achievement and relief kicks in. “You can finally relax at that point … You play the last note, breathe out a sigh and look up - and you’re in a giant room full of people happy and smiling.”

When singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Randall Bramblett began compiling the songs that would eventually make up his 12th and newest studio album, Pine Needle Fire, it wasn’t with any particular musical or lyrical direction in mind. But viewed through the lens of the dozen tracks on the now completed set, it’s apparent there was a theme there all along. A lot of time has passed.
Throughout Pine Needle Fire, Bramblett provides a clear-eyed and engagingly detailed study of lives conservative and crooked, loves resilient and vanished and moments that have passed and are also yet to come. He expresses these stories in a voice that is gruff and resolute, but also sympathetic and flecked with just the right amount of southern charm and whimsy.
With Pine Needle Fire, Bramblett continues to channel his singular voice and unique storytelling approach and experiences into something insightful, tuneful and incredibly soulful. This title is now available on standard black vinyl for the first time.

Elliott Fullam is a New Jersey artist who conjures the magic of when loneliness meets hope with his ghostly vocal melodies and gentle guitar tracks that bring a tranquil feeling to the listener. All of Elliott’s songs are recorded in his bedroom at home and mastered by the world-renowned Alan Douches of West West Side Music. His teenage goal was to release his first album by the time he turned 18 and he achieved that goal with the release of his debut album “What’s Wrong” on his 18th birthday of September 2, 2022.
Elliott is also an actor, playing the co-starring role as Jonathan in the film Terrifier 2 which made a big smash at the box office as an uncut and unrated horror film. And as a dedicated music fan, Elliott has interviewed many musicians since the age of 9 including James Hetfield of Metallica, J Mascis, Ice-T, Jay Weinberg of Slipknot and many more. He always held his passion for music in high regard while finding inspiration in his favorites Elliott Smith, Duster, Mazzy Star, Broadcast, Radiohead and Nick Drake. With nothing else in his life plans aside from the pursuit of creating the best music he possibly could while sustaining his promising acting career, Elliott will continue to release music and play shows for as long as he exists on this planet in hopes that he may be a small part of the force for good in this trying world.

JULIEN DYNE, SURPRISE CHEF’S STUCKEY AND MORE SHINE IN JAZZ-FUNK EP
OVERVIEW:
Drawing inspiration from the depths of late 70’s NYC proto-rap disco instrumentals, Nigerian boogie, Jamaican dub and modern jazzy house - The Lahaar is a Trans-Tasman collaboration between Julien Dyne, Horatio Luna and Surprise Chef’s Lachlan Stuckey, featuring Mara TK and Toby Laing on vocals.
The EP embarks on a 5-track rollercoaster - kicking off with “Doin’ It”, fast-paced jazz-funk peppered with marimba and organ riffs, balanced out by the siren vocals of Mara TK.
“Step 2” suddenly brakes and swerves into cruise mode, repurposing the trumpets and dub echoes - picking up tempo in the soulful melancholia of “Work Work Work”. In the last two tracks the organs and guitars make a frenetic comeback by way of disco-house, ending with a nod to 70s cop movie funk.

An Insult to
the
Sport is a split offering from the genre-de ant groups They are Gutting a Body of Water and A Country Western Elements of breakcore, shoegaze, and obtuse slacker rock nd home on An Insult, at times with no bridge at all between the disparate styles In TAGABOW’s “The Brazil”, a stop-on-a-dime is the only thing that separates hazy slowcore and adventurous drum n bass, unambiguous evidence of the band’s penchant for iconoclast composition. A Country Western’s side of the split entertains similar stylistic mashups, opening with the atmospheric jungle of “Lung” before lurching into the alt-rock “Keeping up with the Joneses”, whose fuzzedout lead riff calls back to bygone eras On paper, the combination of styles may read as cacophonous or incompatible, but the end result is instead a measured contrast of sounds, a re ection of the inescapable in uence of our chaotic time and the groups’ environments.
