Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight
This Issue: Gordon Anderson, Co-President of Real Gone Music
How did you personally get started in the music industry?
Just out of college, I got hired in New York by a publishing company (Crown Publishers) that just happened to have a mail order music division (Outlet Book/Publishers Central Bureau) and a reissue label (Murray Hill). Not much has changed since (except location)!
When and where did the label begin?
Our co-owner Gabby Castellana and I left Super D in 2011 to start the reissue label, which is based in Southern California (Orange, CA and West Hollywood)
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
Elvis Presley at the beginning of “Milk Cow Blues”: “Hold it fellas, that don’t move me. Let’s get real, real gone for a change!” Plus the stuf we do (reissues) is indeed real gone on many levels!
How has the label changed since it started?
Defnitely the big change is shifting from CDs to vinyl.
Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. I handle A&R, Production, Copywriting, Purchasing, some marketing and sales. Gabby handles all the back-end stuf–fnance, operations, digital, some sales. Jeremy Sobotor is our swing man…purchasing, operations, A&R, some graphics, some refereeing. Wes Lostenau mans the warehouse and makes some unboxing videos for us that are quite entertaining if you haven’t seen them. Then we use three freelance designers, a freelance PR person, a freelance social media marketing person, and some independent producers. Lean and mean!
What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?
Defnitely right-sizing the inventory. We went from being sold out of everything for months at a time to being overstocked in less than a year. Hanging on tight to the fuctuations in the marketplace has been a real white-knuckler.
Is the label tied to a specifc geographical area? How is this refected in your releases?
No, not really. We do all genres, all eras.
Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new fnd you’d like to rave about?
I actually go to Metacritic to see what new music has been highly ranked by consensus and check it out. I think my favorite album last year was “Rat Saw God” by Wednesday.
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
Our signature is that we don’t have one. But consistently good quality.
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you frst started compared to now?
Though both Gabby and I had a lot of experience, he in distribution and I in licensing and production, we weren’t sure it was going to work when we frst started out. But we hit our business plan on the nose the frst few years and we were of. Now that we are well established, it would be nice to downshift our legendarily prolifc release schedule and fnd the time to delve deep into
more artists’ catalogs, kinda like what we have done with The Donnas. And we actually have some of those kinds of releases on tap later in the year. We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?
You mean besides all the Grateful Dead releases? I am real proud of our two Bob Wills releases; speaking of the Dead, the Texas Playboys were the frst and maybe best jam band. And I still can’t believe we got “Welcome Interstate Managers” by Fountains of Wayne.
What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released?
I think it’s a lot of fun and a nice selling point as long as you don’t end up signifcantly sacrifcing sound quality. We did a red and black cornetto design on our reissue of the Ocean’s Eleven soundtrack to mimic a roulette wheel. Looked great!
Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs?? We never left CDs and we still put them out. Cassettes can suck it. Shitty format then, shitty format now.
How would you describe the average fan of the label?
Since we put out a lot of diferent types of music from a bunch of diferent eras, that’s a difcult question to answer. CD buyers are defnitely older (which is kinda ironic, since it’s a newer format). Lately we’ve been putting out a lot of modern rock titles on vinyl, which has attracted a younger audience.
Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own?
Yes and the label has actually put out two releases of my own, one under my name and a project with my daughter Edie called NXTOFKIN (she just wrote and recorded an album that we may put out too).
In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days?
It is important and I wish we did a better job of it. Industry needs more options and better education.
How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?
Defnitely important and I am proud that we have put out some socially conscious releases, like our Black Jazz titles, Eugene McDaniels, etc. Hope to have more soon.
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you frst started compared to now?
By far the biggest change is that selling recordings does not power the business any more. It is very difcult to make it as a musician without touring. The barriers to entry are much lower in terms of recording but getting noticed is very challenging. The age of the A&R scout discovering an artist and the label nurturing a talent is over. Now it’s data and social media driven. (I guess that’s more than one change). Honestly, the biz used to be a little more fun. I miss the lobby at the old NARM conventions, and being taken out by people with seemingly limitless expense accounts!
Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance:
How about ones that are gone? Sounds on St. Mark’s in NYC and Aron’s in Hollywood. So many great ones still around, I don’t think I can pinpoint just one. Hats of to the folks keeping the fame of record retail bright.
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered?
You mean when we’re all Real Gone? We’re the label that put out Doris Day to the Deviants, Steve & Eydie to The Slits, Barry Sadler to Charles Bukowski. We captured a swath of this crazy, mixed-up musical orb we (used to) live on.

Congo’s turbulent and exhilarating ‘70s: Nightclubs and dance floors were packed to the brim in the capital, Kinshasa. The whole continent was submerged into the Congolese Rumba craze. Encouraged by the fantastic productions of the Ngoma label, vibrant radio waves had been spreading the Congo sound from Leopoldville all over the continent, becoming the countries’ No.1 export.
The unexpected success nurtured an incredible wealth of talented musicians. One of them was Verckys. Analog Africa has the privilege to present 11 tracks by Verckys et L’Orchestre Vévé at the height of their most funky capabilities. Compiled over the course of many years, we welcome you to the grooviest era of the Congo.

OVERVIEW
Fat White Family are back. The cult south-London band’s long-gestated fourth album, Forgiveness Is Yours, has, like everything they’ve done but more so, pushed them to the limits not only of their creative talent, but of their health, their sanity, and their very existence. The external enemies have melted away — perhaps they were hallucinations all along. The Fat Whites’ dirty war was only ever with themselves — a war for hearts and minds, their own as much as anyone’s. A war whose primary objective, it turns out, was survival.
To singer Lias Saoudi, the Fat Whites’ resplendent new record, Forgiveness Is Yours, ‘is about what happens when you run out of road’ — the music you make when you’re at the end of the line, your tether, the world. Its twelve tracks come on like a sideways state of the nation tirade, a bulletin of indignities chronicling times spinning wildly out of joint.
During the tumultuous period it’s taken for the new album to arrive, the band has remained active on multiple fronts. Side projects and solo projects abound, while Lias made the surprise lockdown move of refashioning himself as one of the more entertaining, recklessly candid prose writers around, first with his column for The Social, ‘Beyond the Neutral Zone’, and then by collaborating with author Adelle Stripe on one of the great rock’n’roll books of this or any other decade, Ten-Thousand Apologies: Fat White Family and the Miracle of Failure
We can only take Lias Saoudi at his word when he says, "The overarching aesthetic themes at work here are honesty and survival."Forgiveness Is Yours is a testament to the will to create even when catastrophes keep happening, when you’ve come out of the drug-fog long enough to realize that the damage is irreparable, all truces are fleeting, and the game was never worth the candle. The revolution has turned on itself; the movement is devouring its offspring; the drugs definitively did not work. Everything is broken, everything is brilliant. Burned clear, blasted free of illusions, Forgiveness Is Yours is a quintessence of disenchantment and the bittersweet fruit of vicious, sinister times. Let’s enjoy it while we can — there’s nothing like it around.

orn Melanie Safka, raised in Queens, New York, her vagabond journey as a musician began in Greenwich Village in the late 1960s. In 1969, she was helicoptered on to the stage at Woodstock festival. "I just thought it was a weekend of singing. I pictured families with picnic blankets, and arts and crafts. I had no idea! I walked into the lobby and there was Janis Joplin.” Aged 22, Melanie had never seen a famous person before. “I thought, ‘I can’t do this. I don’t have any hit records, nobody knows who I am.’ I had no musicians with me, no roadie – I even brought my mom!” Of course she became an overnight sensation. After Woodstock she continued to make music, had a number of hits, was covered by the likes of Nina Simone, the New Seekers, Mott the Hoople and Morrissey. Many artists made their own versions of Ms. Safka’s songs, including Miley Cyrus, Nina Simone, the New Seekers, Mott the Hoople and Morrissey.

“Mesmerizing, infectious, joyful, and heartbreaking; this is the best new album I've heard in a decade. Joh Chase has arrived.”
– Melissa FerrickCareer trajectories are rarely linear or make logical sense. Life is always unpredictable so all you can do is put in good work and keep at it. Joh Chase is a testament to this. Over the past two decades, the Seattle-raised, Los Angeles-based artist has persistently honed their songwriting and toured, opening for acts like Noah Gunderson and David Bazan. This dedication comes out entirely in their songs, which are so timeless, confident, and inviting they can only come from someone who’s devoted their whole life to their craft. Chase’s new album SOLO feels like a turning point for them: it’s the culmination of a lifetime of writing, losing, loving, and doing it all yourself. The LP adventurously toes the line between genres and sensibilities but it’s all filtered through Chase’s charming and fully-formed vision.
SOLO is a testament to Chase’s do-it-yourself ethos throughout their entire career—they chipped away, self-funded tours, and crowdfunded this LP. But by finding their voice, they now no longer feel alone. “This is the most support I've ever had in my life,” says Chase. “I do not feel alone at all. There’s so much energy and generosity here around these songs.” Though it’s not their debut, SOLO feels like a reinvention for an artist: a daring reintroduction for a timeless talent. “I spent my life making music and trying to do it about 10 different ways,” says Chase. “Now this one feels like it. This album feels like a leveling-up of my music in general. When I look at it now, I realize this is the first record that's really me.”

Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Jogo Duro, a collaboration between Ilhan Ersahin and some outstanding São Paulo musicians Guizado, Ze Nigro, Samuel Fraga, Chicao & Tony Gordin who also happen to be great friends. These are players who will be familiar to those following the careers of Céu, Otto, Curumin, Tulipa Ruiz and the late, great Gal Costa. This record is the result of the amount of time Ilhan has spent in São Paulo over the last decade due to putting on the Nublu Jazz Fest there every year. With all the contacts, connections and friendships formed over the course of making an annual music festival happen, musical cross-pollination (usually simply referred to as "jams") was inevitable but this time it was decided to do it in a studio with tape rolling rather than on stage, which is certainly a more productive approach than merely talking about it over beers at a local bar!
Everything happened fairly spontaneously over three days in the studio, everybody brought songs, ideas and creative energy and before you know it an album was born, which will be released in March 29.

Missing out on that super-chill, uber-jittery minimal groove thing? Let’s get real, real Ghosted again.
Oren Ambarchi has been collaborating with the Fire! trio (Mats Gustafsson, Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin) for over a decade — and both Johan and Andreas played on Oren ’s Live Hubris as well. Oren and Johan began music-making together back in the early aughts — but it wasn’t until 2021 that the three of them got together to record music. That became the frst Ghosted album. When they were done, it was clear they had founded a new group. A music of sustained tension and deep atmosphere marked by subtle, shifting dynamics, Ghosted was released in May of 2022 to psyched response everywhere; the trio embarked upon an ongoing series of concert bookings around Europe, with loads of other people in the world still hoping to have the chance to be in the room at the next show. Two years on, Ghosted has gone through several represses; now, it’s time for the “dreaded follow up album”! Rather than go back to the well, the guys decided to tear everything down and start all over again, reimagining themselves from scratch.
Just kidding! As we’ve noted, Oren, Johan and Andreas have been playing together for years and years, developing an essential telepathy within their shared space. They get each other and feed each other’s music processes on an elemental level. Why change that? What made the most sense was to go back to Daneil Bengtsson at Studio Rymden in Stockholm for a couple days, then have Oren and Joe Talia mix and Joe master it at Good Mixture in Melbourne again, then get Pål Dybwik to do some well-distinctive cover art, and once more, call it a record.
That’s just what they did — and it should be no surprise at all that the new Ambarchi / Berthling / Werliin album looks and sounds as engrossing as their debut, if not more so! Ghosted II has a defnitively fresh quality radiating throughout it. The mutual feeling among the three players goes deep, allowing for lots more to say every time they get together — a further recombination of elements, a new expedition through alternative angles...there’s always more, and incredibly, it’s all improvised, with next-to-nothing prepared going in and minimal overdubs after they’ve laid things down. References are shared in shorthand, with just a single word, like “Santana,” or “Police” acting as working titles for certain pieces on this record (have a guess!). It’s a disservice to call them jams: above and beyond the innate feel of the songs, there’s a strong sense of structure, informed by the band’s communal aesthetic, and edifed immeasurably by their time spent in concert the last couple years.
As noted at the top, these guys balance their music improbably between a relaxed feel and a nervy resolve, as each member holds down their corner in an open sound feld. Making Ghosted II, the band found that there’s a diferent kind of tension making something for an established project rather than the kind one feels making something for the frst time — and they used this new variety, as before, as a kind of fuel — driving their terse minimalism fruitfully through the process of succumbing to and then transcending guilty pleasures. Finding fresh territory in funk sketches, jazzy heads, ambient pastorals and droning soundtrack pieces, Ambarchi, Berthling and Werliin compellingly haunt a mad variety of spaces, leaving us wanting to get Ghosted II.
With Time Is Glass, Six Organs of Admittance is captured once again in the intricate tangle of the fretboards, soaring in open skies above. Like lens fl are cutting through the speakers; spiderwebs cracking the windshield that holds back all the onrushing reality. Blowing the dust away, cutting a new path for cognition. As is always endeavored....
After 20 years of living on the road in different places, Six Organs of Admittance had returned home to Humboldt County — a far country, to some, but still part of the world through which creatures of all kinds are moving through and contributing to. And some of them are human. Alone together — forming connection and exchange out of thought and expression — no different from the people on the other side of the Redwood Curtain. It was there, where Six Organs had long ago emerged, in the name of everything cycling, of circles that spiral concentrically and remain unbroken, the new music was conceived.
In moments, it was as if the future had somehow wrapped around 360 degrees; elsewhere, the systems and patterns inside the writing and recording only became evident later — like a recognition that cumulus and nimbus clouds which passed through the sky the day before contained familiar shapes. Informing the songs accordingly as he went, Ben picked up on modes both musical and lyrical, threading backward through the time of Six Organs of Admittance. Almost marinating in it as a way of life. Working on the music and the vocals, then spending some time with them while stepping away from them. Walking the dog and coming back to them. Time is Glass is made of that kind of time. Alone time.
Recorded in the visceral environs of home, Time Is Glass is sharply focused, even as misty impressionist mountains float through the background. Sweet and spiny, “The Mission” sings its purpose, before turning abruptly to the orchestral rumble of “Hephaestus”: rural industrial psychedelia, ecosystem goth, synths arcing to lift a helplessly earthbound community into the firmament above. Winding almost imperceptibly back into song with “Slip Away”, the time of the record becomes clear, moves fluidly, relaxed but aware, from event to event. People and things coming around again. The intuit, passing through wormholes and time, sounding deep then dissolving into the universal. The acoustic sounds ringing, layered suddenly, then clear again. Explosions of a new kind of distortion. Ecstatic melodies. Communing. The space of a day. The space of a season. Time is Glass, and Six Organs of Admittance is here and will be here, again.

Maria Chiara Argirò
“This is completely different from everything I've done before,” says Maria Chiara Argirò of her latest album, Closer. “I really connect with this record a lot – I've never felt so satisfied about anything.”
Closer is an album rooted deep in a feeling that overcame Argirò. “I was really locked in with this feeling and I was like: I need to make this record now,” she says. It’s not an obvious or easily describable feeling that was bubbling away inside Argirò though. “A dreamlike feeling in motion,” she explains. “A feeling that we cannot describe, a dream I’m sort of walking through.”
However, despite being rooted in something indescribable or definable, Argirò set about making this record with a laser focus on what she wanted to do. “I had a clarity for this record that I didn't have for others,” she says. “I just knew what I wanted – from the production to where I wanted a trumpet solo. We didn’t experiment a lot with this record because I just knew what to do. This might be a once in a lifetime thing to happen.”
A once in a lifetime occurrence or moment of perfectly crystalised creative vision, perhaps, but you could also argue that Closer is the natural evolutionary by-product of a highly skilled, nuanced and ambitious artist who is able to trust their intuition to create something singular.
Argirò has been a central figure in the UK jazz, classical and electronic worlds since she moved to London from Rome over a decade ago. A skilled pianist since childhood, she’s collaborated with everyone from These New Puritans to Jono McCleery to Jamie Leeming alongside output with Moonfish. Her previous solo album, the stunning electronic jazz-fusion record Forest City, received widespread critical acclaim and was covered by the likes of The Guardian, Pitchfork, Vogue, and Rolling Stone. Her music has featured in the Netflix series, Elite, and she can count the likes of Four Tet and Gilles Peterson as fans, with the latter describing her music as “absolutely crazy good”.
The result of this journey, both sonic and personal, can be keenly felt on Closer. “While working on the music there was this strong feeling of getting, with every single note, closer and closer to the person I want to be,” she says. “I was like, this is my thing, this is my baby, I need to connect more with myself and the music and have this sort of conscious journey. To be free, curious and closer connected to the people I love. There is so much noise in this world, I think being direct, gentle, light, open and connected is the key.”
While it is definitely not a concept album, the record does mirror the path of inner self-exploration that Argirò has been on. Albeit moving in unpredictable ways, as it traverses the spectrum of electronic music spanning ambient to dance music, while also retaining light touches of jazz with a leaning towards experimental pop via Argirò’s more central and up-front vocals.
The opening ‘Light’ – a song about “establishing a lighter and balanced relationship with your inner self and consequently with others” – is a beautiful piece of immersive yet infectious synth-pop, with the slow-burn unfurling “Closer” following, merging sparse drums with deft melodies, glimmering
production and a vocal performance that feels both tender yet quietly rousing. ‘Time’ is a stirring track that gradually builds from a soft, soul-jazz inflected piece before it rockets into techno thumper territory – yet all the while retaining that light, dreamy, immersive quality that Argirò is so skilled at.
Finding clarity and sharpened definition in between blurred lines and dreamlike worlds, is the core duality and dichotomy that underpins Closer. Not only is this reflected in the philosophy that drove Argirò’s creative approach but it results in a genre-fluid record that gracefully blends engulfing atmospheres, glistening synths and pummelling beats; creating a space where melody and deconstructed rhythms harmoniously coexist.
Much like that feeling that overcame and gripped Argirò, forcing her to make the most direct and clear work of her life, the end result may not be easy to pigeonhole into genre but it is loaded with personality. “I'm just trying to follow my instincts,” Argirò says. “When I compose, I'm so focused, there is nothing that can distract me. I’m not worried if this music is going to be liked. I’m focused on the music – and what’s next.”
The end result of this record is not just in creating something that is breaking new sonic ground for Argirò, but also making something she feels deeply anchored to on a personal level. “It's been so important for me to connect with myself making this record,” she says. “That's why this album is hard to define because there is no connection with the outside world, it’s all about the inner self.”
And one of the many beautiful consequences of Argirò making a record that set out to undo previous ways of working and thought processes, is that it’s opened up the future for endless possibilities. “I am progressing continuously,” she says. “Which means that I have no boundaries for what's coming next.”
"Hazy, downtrodden vocal harmonies blend with aquatic synth arpeggios that mirror the tide, like Azure Ray singing over Thom Yorke compositions." - Pitchfork
"In the past decade, Argirò has pushed to the forefront of two disparate jazz fusion scenes — first in her native Rome and then in London, where she currently resides." - The FADER
"The trained pianist sublimely fuses the jazz and electronic music worlds, creating sprawling compositions that marry her poetic lyrics, looped vocals, and intricate rhythms." - FLOOD "atmospheric/ambient pop" - Brooklyn Vegan
"drawing back the veils of perception to view the world in its innate splendour." - Clash

Empirical
Wonder is the Beginning
Real groups like Empirical are a rarity in contemporary jazz, where musicians so often come together for single projects then disperse again once they are done: groups that endure for fifteen years, without slackening in their quest for the new and the fresh, are all but unheard of
Having started their journey in 2007, Empirical now makes a triumphant return, re-taking their rightful place at the centre of the UK scene with 'Wonder is the Beginning'. Their first full-length album since 2016, is a mature musical statement that shows the band's fire is still undimmed and their commitment to maintaining the legacy while forging their own unique path is as strong as ever.
The personnel of the quartet, for whom sharp tailoring has become something of a trademark, has remained the same for fifteen years. Nathaniel Facey (alto sax), Tom Farmer (double bass), Lewis Wright (vibraphone) and Shaney Forbes (drums) confound listeners with a telepathic empathy that can only be attained after countless performances together.
On 'Wonder is the Beginning' their palette is expanded by the presence of two remarkable guests. Alex Hitchcock contributes his voice on tenor sax to represent the rising generation of virtuoso players, while Jason Rebello adds his unmistakable presence on piano as well as the towering reputation he's built over a thirty-five year international career.
This album illustrates the breadth and vision that make Empirical such a potent creative force and underlines that longevity in the challenging world of top- tier contemporary jazz is no fluke. Reinforced by the inspiring contributions of their special guests, it's a powerful statement of faith in the music's ability to adapt, to inspire, to express the ineffable, to engage and to grow.

David Preston
Purple / Black Vol.1
When guitarist David Preston started composing for the project that became his first solo LP, he opened up some fascinating new perspectives, in contrast to his acclaimed work with high-octane fusioneers Preston/Glasgow/Lowe he found himself drawn to simple forms, textures, and moods - 'not going full tilt all the time'
To realize his vision, he assembled a cast of extraordinary musical explorers. Building on his relationship with six-string bassist Kevin Glasgow as a foundation, he chose multi-genre drummer Seb Rochford, equally at home playing with the avante- jazz of Polar Bear as he is with pop sensation Adele, and rounded the team off with front-rank composer, arranger, pianist and organist Kit Downes - all players whose approach could simultaneously encompass both simplicity and deep complexity and match the freedom to improvise with a respect for the concision and directness of the song.
David took them into the studio and the band instantly gelled, diving into a mammoth session that yielded enough material for two full albums. Volume 1Purple / Black is the first offering - a coherent suite of song- form tunes whose direct, uncluttered melodicism conceals hidden depths that reveal themselves anew at each listen.

Linley Hamilton
Ginger's Hollow
Linley Hamilton'slegendary hospitality has been enjoyed by a growing cohort of international jazz musicians whenever they visit at his Magy's Farm venue-cum-homestead deep in his native Ulster within sight of the mountains of Morne
His tireless efforts as a promoter, radio host, educator and all round champion of the music are so effective that his main gig as a trumpeter and composer is sometimes overlooked. Ginger's Hollow places Linley the musician back in the spotlight where he belongs, at the helm of a transatlantic team to present an album of pure musical good vibes. Under his leadership, Dublin based pianist/ composer Cian Boylan and first call session saxophonist Derek 'Doc' O'Connorare reunited with US legends Adam Nussbaum on drums and Pat Metheny/Gil Evans sideman Mark Egan on bass, and the mutual respect and sheer good fellowship that they share comes through loud and clear in this set of original tunes with the emphasis on openness, accessibility and positivity.

Dee Byrne
Outlines
Dee Byrne is an artist swimming freely in a sea of creative possibilities
Her Entropi project established her reputation as a fearless explorer of the interface between composition and improvisation, structure and freedom, driven by a constant urge to create. To reconnect with the roots of that urge, she took a deep diveinto her own process, using visual art as a medium to unlock fresh approaches to composition.
The results can be heard on her latest Whirlwind release and seen on the cover art: Outlines is a set of nine pieces for a specially assembled sextet of some of the UK's most adventurous and genre-busting musicians. Bassist Olie Brice, drummer Andrew Lisle and piano/ keyboard player Rebecca Nash are all bandleaders, capable of navigating the complexities of Byrne's complex multimodal compositions while allowingthe spontaneity to flow freely: Tom Ward's collection of clarinets and Nick Malcolm's trumpet complete the frontline with Dee's alto sax, spinning tales and painting pictures.
"There are a lot of strong, deep musical and personal relation ships in this bandthe sort that can't be fast-tracked. It's a real band!" Dee describes the writing process: 'I decided to peel everything back to the basics of being creative. I started drawing and set rules for myself, retraining my mind to stop crit icising -to follow impulse without being attached to outcome! Then I applied the same approach to writing music -they're genuine musical sketches!'
Collecting the musical fragments, she assembled them into compositions that could move easily from carefully structured written parts into free improvisation and back again.
Outlines is a bold and fully realised work that daringly reimagines the interface between control and freedom, writing and improvisation. The pieces develop naturally from written to free and back again, guided by a group of players in perfect harmony with the music and with each other: challenging and comforting the listener, and drawing them deep into Dee Byrne's complex and beautiful soundworld.

Ex Tenebris is the classic second album from Norwegian prog legends White Willow, originally released in 1997. It was made after the Ignus Fatuus line-up had disbanded. Originally intended to be a solo album by Jacob HolmLupo, it turned into a White Willow record when he realized it was going more in a progressive direction than anticipated. The recording was quick and dirty, done on a shoestring budget, but there is some charm to the natural drum ambience and first-takes-only feel of the album.
Overall, Ex Tenebris ended up being a more stripped-down, somewhat darker album than Ignis Fatuus. No krumhorns or renaissance vocal groups, more electric guitar and synths. The songs range from almost neoprogish mini-epics like Leaving the House of Thanatos, via acoustic balladry (The Book of Love, Thirteen Days) to more overtly gothic stuff like A Strange Procession & A Dance of Shadows. The album has become a bit of a cult favourite with the band’s fans, and was White Willows’s first step towards something more original than the first album’s retro-styled psych-folk.
This re-release was meticulously remastered by the band’s own Jacob Holm-Lupo and is presented with the classic original cover art, for the first time on vinyl. This is the second in a series of six White Willow re-releases on Karisma Records.

“Drowsy, poignant guitars serve as the perfect soundtrack for a ride on the highway in the dark” –Stereogum
Joyer, tipped at Brooklyn Vegan, Stereogum, Sirius XMU, Paste Magazine and more, is the shoegaze/slowcore project of brothers Shane and Nick Sullivan based out of Brooklyn and Boston. In the timespan of releasing two albums (2020's Sun Into Flies and 2021's Perfect Gray), they have played across the US with artists such as Knifeplay, Feeble Little Horse,Hovvdy, and ChastityBelt. Night Songs features friends such as Sabrina Nichols (Shep Treasure), Boone Patrello (Teethe), James Keegan (Kitchen), and lastly Brad Krieger (Big Nice Studio) who recorded and mastered the album. It was mixed by Alex Farrar from Drop of Sun Studios (prev.Wednesday's Rat Saw God,IndigoDeSouza's All Of This Will End).
Nighttime changes people. Self-destructive behaviors are more tempting without the judgment of the daytime glow. But night also provides a peaceful, meditative setting for creativity to run wild – a haven to escape one’s day-to-day malaise. Joyer are fascinated by these after-dark hours. Their new album, Night Songs, is an instantly satisfying amalgam of swirling shoegaze guitars and memorable melodies – all while the duo examines the allure of night and its ability to shape shift from a mirror for our innermost demonstoashieldfromthedemandsofdailydrudgery.
Night Songs marks a departure from their hushed slowcore beginnings and displays a more expansive sound — from blowtorched guitars and overtly hooky vocal cadences, to melancholy synths and pastoral lap steel. Their foray into twistier, heavier sonics coincides with the darker nature of nighttime activities, while the more hi-fi, pop-forward vocal direction makes forafittingcontrast,justlikethestarkclaritythatpitch-blackskiesprovide.

• Issued for the very first time as a double LP, completely remastered with brand new artwork
• Limited pressing on Pink Vinyl, CD presented in large deluxe gatefold sleeve with full colour booklet.
• Originally recorded in New York in 1972 and released on her own Neighbourhood Records label.
In 1972, Melanie and her producer and husband Peter Schekeryk began work on what she intended to be her most ambitious album yet. Stoneground Words was to be a double album - the first such statement from any female rock artist. It would also be the first worldwide release on Neighborhood Records, the label she and Schekeryk established in 1971 - another first, as she entered territory into which only the Beatles, the Stones and the Moody Blues had previously stepped. Even more crucially, however, it was her personal response to the enormous success, earlier in the year, of the hit “Brand New Key” - “the bicycle song,” as so many people recall it. Stoneground Words returned to the drawing board. Ten songs were selected; the remainder were placed to one side; and the album was released to generally positive reviews which included Melody Maker’s assertion that it was “the most sophisticated she's made. The naiveté of [the past has] been replaced by deeper, more comprehensive methods of expression.” She is the first to admit that the new edition of Stoneground Words is not a true facsimile of the original. The paperwork for all three projects, after all, disappeared long ago, as did the tapes (“who knows where?”).

The sophomore and final studio album from punk icons - X-Ray Spex. The highly sought after album received a very limited CD only release in 1995 on Receiver Records in the UK and had been officially unavailable for 27 years until December 2023! The album reunited the iconic X-Ray Spex vocalist - Poly Styrene with original X-Ray Spex saxophonist - Lora Logic and bassist - Paul Dean, as well as guitar from Kula Shaker frontman Crispian Mills under his then pseudonym Red Spectre. This release has been remastered from the original master tapes and is available on LP for the first time ever! Including the original and expanded artwork, including previously unpublished lyrics and original sleeve notes from Poly. Pop culture is full of classic albums that slip between the cracks. In recent years the late Poly Styrene and X-Ray Spex have achieved iconic status with their 1978 debut ‘Germfree Adolescents’ album but the group’s follow up album 'Conscious Consumer’ released 17 years later has been lost to the sands of time. These days most people don’t even realise that X-Ray Spex had a follow up to what is now embraced as one of the classics of the punk rock period. This lovingly compiled revisit puts the spotlight on a lost gem that has many of the hallmarks of the debut but is sieved through a different lens. ‘Conscious Consumer’ was an upgrade of the classic debut with a same punk rock urgency and themes of consumerism but with a poppier edge and a more considered wisdom gleamed from the ups and downs of life from the perspective of an older, wiser, Krishna devotee. In 1995 the album was an unexpected comeback and a lost classic. It was the first new material recorded by the band for years despite many of the songs being written a decade before. On release, though, the album disappeared into a void being out of sync with the times and before Poly got her deserved iconic status. The band who also re-formed in 1991, 1995 and 2008 are now revered worldwide for sparking a new kind of attitude in music. The late Poly is now a pop culture pin-up for an originality and feminism that barely existed at the time.

The Flirtations Records
Limited to 1000 copies for RSD UK.
The Flirtations are poised to release ‘Still Sounds Like the Flirtations’ – their first album of new material in 55 years. They are best known for their 1969 signature song, "Nothing But A Heartache”, off their debut album ‘Sounds Like the Flirtations’. That song spent 14 weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100, and its success saw the group tour with Stevie Wonder, Tom Jones, The Four Tops and The Temptations. “Nothing But a Heartache” remains an undeniable Northern Soul classic; it has been streamed over 13 million times, and in 2022 was remixed by Tobtok and Oliver Nelson. On their forthcoming album, which was produced, engineered, mixed, and co-written by Ben Rice (Joan Osborne, Valerie June), Earnestine Pearce, Shirley Pearce, and Viola Billups aka Pearly Gates tell the stories of their lives. Drawing inspiration from the churn of personal, social, and political situations that they have lived through over the past five decades, they capture a timeless and well-earned perspective on love and life. The record, which features the Dap King horns, contains standout tracks, including the reflective call to action “Memories”, co-written by Stevie Wonder; the hopeful love song “Ain’t No Easy Way” and the instant dance floor hit “Didn’t Anybody Tell You”, both co-written by Grammy-nominated songwriter Gian Stone (John Legend, Meghan Trainor); the uplifting groover “Love Somebody”; and the roaring “Take It Back”, co-written by Dave Sherman (Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Elle King). The recording process was a transatlantic adventure, with sessions at Abbey Road and Resident Studios in London, Degraw Sound in Brooklyn, and Creative Workshop in Nashville. Retaining the classic soul sound and melodic harmonies The Flirtations are known for, the album will not disappoint long-time fans, while also promising to bring their authentic, inimitable sound to a new generation of music.

2LP HAS003LPD 2024-04-26 5055869550482
Originally released on Rough Trade Records in 1982, this is the first re-issue since then and now in a deluxe format for RSD UK with bonus tracks and new sleeve notes from Lora. Overlooked on release in 1982 when Punk became Funk, Essential Logic creator and X-Ray Spex co-founder Lora Logic's debut solo album retains her signature bouncing sax lines and vocal acrobatics but weaves an esoteric web of mutant disco, jazz and the very left-field of pop which sounds uncannily like now. Featuring the abstract swing of This Heat legend Charles Hayward on drums and clipped funk guitars from Phil Legg, songs like "Wonderful Offer" and "Brute Fury" share a DNA with New York noise merchants like Bush Tetras and James Chance but also Talking Heads with its sideways take on world music, the playful experimental innocence of contemporaries The Raincoats and the zesty funk of A Certain Ratio. Indeed, this punk-funk can be found in the latter generations of The Rapture, Franz Ferdinand (who owe a debt to "Wonderful Offer" specifically) and all the way up to The Orielles, while the album's stridently unconventional and fearless sonic palette has retained its freshness for modern times.

Sartorial
Records
This is a 5 track EP of brand new, previously unreleased material from The Near Jazz Experience (Terry Edwards, Mark Bedford and Simon Charterton).
Whilst recording the new album Terry asked pianist Mike Garson (best known for his work with David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins) - whom Terry has toured with if he'd like to play on a track. Mike said yes, recorded a stupendous solo for Character Actor at his home studio and sent it over. All in the space of 24 hours! On hearing the piano part NJE bassist Mark Bedford came up with the idea of having the piano mixed with the original track (as intended) but also using it as the basis for a completely new recording with the piano leading rather than complementing the band. Side 1 of the EP has these two very different versions from the same seed. Unidentical twins indeed. Side 2 of the EP contains 4 outliers from the album sessions. These aren't out-takes or unfinished pieces. They simply couldn't find a place for themselves within the album - along the lines of the tunes Tom Waits put together for his Orphans compilation of 2006. They are standalone tunes which have found a home together on this EP because in some way they all have filmic qualities. Side 1 contains 2 takes on Character Actor (the title being a nod to Cracked Actor, a tune on Aladdin Sane, the album that introduced Bowie fans to Mike Garson), and Side 2 has The Loping Four; Projector; MacGuffin and Lockstep, all titles which contain strong cinematic elements, MacGuffin in particular. It was Alfred Hitchcock's favourite word for a red herring in the plot. The musical cast on this release has a remarkable pedigree. The NJE consists of Terry Edwards (solo artist and session player with PJ Harvey, Franz Ferdinand, Siouxsie, Jimi Tenor, Piroshka, Tindersticks etc); Mark Bedford (Madness, Robert Wyatt, Robyn Hitchcock, Nightingales etc); Simon Charterton (The Higsons, Alex Harvey, Zook, Serious Drinking etc). Alongside featured guest Mike Garson there is an appearance by Oliver Cherer (Aircooled, Miki Berenyi Band) on keys and synth. 500 copies pressed on black vinyl for RSD UK in full colour sleeve which reflects the filmic quality of the recorded material.

MDOU MOCTAR
Funeral for Justice
The songs on ‘Funeral For Justice’ speak unfinchingly to the plight of Niger and of the Tuareg people. “This album is really different for me,” explains Moctar, the band’s singer, namesake, and indisputably iconic guitarist. “Now the problems of terrorist violence are more serious in Africa. When the US and Europe came here, they said they’re going to help us, but what we see is really different. They never help us to fnd a solution.”
“Mdou Moctar has been a strong anti-colonial band ever since I’ve been a part of it,” says producer and bassist Mikey Coltun, who has been playing with Moctar since 2017. “France came in, fucked up the country, then said ‘you’re free.’ And they’re not.”
The song ‘Oh France’ tackles this head on: “France veils its actions in cruelty / We are better without this turbulent relationship / We must understand their endless lethal games.”
On the lead single and title track, Moctar addresses African leaders directly, bidding them: “Retake control of your countries, rich in resources / Build them and quit sleeping”. The song ‘Sousoume Tamacheq’ deals with the plight of the Tuareg people to which the band belong, and who are mainly spread across three countries: Niger, Mali and Algeria.”Oppressed in all three / In addition to lack of unity, ignorance is the third issue.”
• THE FOLLOW UP TO BREAKTHRU LP ‘AFRIQUE VICTIME’ (2021)
• GLOBAL HEADLINE, FESTIVAL TOURING PLANNED IN 2024-25
• MAJOR BROADSHEET COVERAGE CONFIRMED IN THE US AND UK
• OVER 600k FOLLOWERS ON SOCIALS
• RECENT FEATURES IN THE NYTIMES, NEW YORKER, PITCHFORK, ROLLING STONE, MANY OTHERS.
“Explosive, uncontainable... [AfriqueVictime is] the fullest picture of his gifts yet.” - Pitchfork, Best New Music
“This is how free rock & roll should sound.” -RollingStone
Another song, ‘Imouhar’, calls on the Tuareg to preserve their Tamasheq language - it’s at risk of dying out, and Mdou is one of the few in his community who knows how to write it. “People here are just using French,” laments Mdou. “They’re starting to forget their own language. We feel like in a hundred years no one will speak good Tamasheq, and that’s so scary for us.”
Mdou Moctar in its current iteration is frst and foremost a band. Alongside Moctar, it consists of rhythm guitarist Ahmoudou Madassane, drummer Souleymane Ibrahim, and American bassist and producer Mikey Coltun.
The band got their start performing at traditional weddings. These are high energy events – amps are dialed up to 11 and the whole town is invited to attend. “I grew up in the DC punk scene and this is no different,” explains Coltun. “It’s a DIY punk show: people bring generators, they crank their amps. Things are broken, but they make it work.”
Conveying that energy and feeling of community to a new audience has been an important goal for the band. Their frst concerts in the US were sometimes, mistakenly, organized to be tame seated affairs. That’s no longer the case. Over 100s of shows, they’ve proven themselves as one of the world’s most vital rock bands – a group rooted in Tuareg tradition, but undeniably its own singular organism. An Mdou Moctar concert is now recognized to be a place for dancing, if not full-force moshing.

EMILY NENNI DRIVE & CRY EMILY NENNI DRIVE &
STREET DATE: MAY 3, 2024
Emily Nenni has written a follow-up to 2022’s critically acclaimed record, On The Ranch. Her debut album garnered her much success and introduced her to a devoted audience of music fans who celebrate the traditional side of country music while embracing the modern indie aesthetic that comes with that nod to the past. While writing her latest record, Drive & Cry, Nenni looked in the rearview mirror for inspiration but kept focus on the sound that she has become known for. “This is the first record I have completely written on my own. I spent a good bit of solitary time ruminating on things that had happened over the last year or two. Rethinking what I’m doing, how I’m doing it, who with, even in just the everyday. Change is hard but also such a gift.”
Nenni worked with producer John James Tourville (The Deslondes, Sunny War) to broaden her sound and bring in nuance to the recording. The record was engineered by Jake Davis and mixed by Matt Ross-Spang in Memphis, TN. The resulting recording is a matured country sound that focuses on the fun and the tears that come with all changes in life.

Nourished By Time follows up his 2023 critically-acclaimed, breakout album Erotic Probiotic 2 with his debut EP on XL Recordings: Catching Chickens, set for physical release on May 3rd. With tracks like “Hell of a Ride,” in which Nourished By Time contemplates the fall of the American empire and late-stage capitalism loneliness, and “Hand on Me,” which traces the paranoia from distrust in a post-traumatic world, Nourished By Time chronicles his own test of agility as he weaves through the motions of his newfound notability.

QUOTES:
Goth Babe’s latest is a twinkling journey perfect for soundtracking a windows-down car ride — perhaps even “through the mountains” as vocalist Griff Washburn sings. Reminiscent of late 2000s indie-pop like Yeasayer or MGMT, “Alone in the Mountains” arrives just in time for summer and seems tailor-made for a midday festival set
—Billboard
Goth Babe’s signature sound, which blends indie, yesteryear indie-pop, and electronic influences.

Goth Babe has been making waves in the indie music scene in recent years, thanks to his unique sound and his ability to capture the beauty and mystery of the natural world in his music. Initially inspired by the success of local heroes the Mekons and Gang of Four, Leeds, England's Delta 5 later emerged as one of the key figures of the feminist new wave. Formed in 1979 by vocalist/guitarist Julz Sale, fretless bassist Ros Allen, and bassist Bethan Peters, the group was begun on a lark, but following the additions of guitarist Alan Riggs and drummer Kelvin Knight, Delta 5 issued their debut single, "Mind Your Own Business," and found themselves thrust to the forefront of the Leeds post-punk community.
In addition to a similarly abrasive funk sound, Delta 5 was also at the vanguard of the Rock Against Racism movement. Their unique two-bass rhythm section set them clearly apart from their peers, and with the success of their second single, "You," they mounted a successful U.S. tour.

MAY 3, 2024
During the punk rock era of the late '70s, there were three bands comprising women who made some of the best, most adventurous, most exhilarating, and most critically derided music of the time. Two were the English bands the Slits and the Raincoats, and the third band, from Switzerland, was LiLiPUT. Fans of all three bands will argue ad infinitum as to who was the better. But one thing is for certain: LiLiPUT was an amazing band that recorded amazing music, and comparing what they accomplished to that of another band is a useless intellectual exercise. Besides, it detracts from valuable listening time. They began with the name Kleenex until the threat of a lawsuit by corporate giant Kimberly-Clark (who had copyrighted the name Kleenex) forced them to become LiLiPUT in 1980.
What's collected here certainly belongs in the same realm as the other great, pioneering, female-dominated bands of the time. Liliput were one of the finest in their field, male or female. From their punkier singles as Kleenex to their more avant-garde developments as Liliput, this compilation offers over two solid hours of great music that hasn't depreciated at all. In light of all the bands they've inspired, this stuff probably sounds even better than it did when it was first issued.

• LP cut by Kevin Gray from the Mainstream Masters!
• LP pressed in the USA at Citizen for optimal sound!
• Finally, a legitimate pressing back in the bins!
Interwoven Hammond organ riffs, heavy electric guitar and melodic bass lines give Nucleus an edge – their odd time signatures make it an aural lobotomy! Pressed on white vinyl!
The origins of Nucleus lay in late ‘60s Toronto combo The Lords Of London. They were a popular live attraction and appeared at the Canadian National Exhibition alongside The Guess Who and Kensington Market, as well as US bands like Moby Grape.
Though they had minor Canadian hits, a US breakthrough never came, and by September 1968 they were evolving into a different sort of act. Having changed their name to Nucleus and adopted a jazzier, more improvisational approach in daylong rehearsals, they recorded their sole LP with all original songs.
Their sound ranges from the deranged “Jenny Wakes Up” to the intense “Communication.” Issued in April 1969 (its release having been briefly delayed by what Billboard described as 'a technical complication'), the album attracted considerable cult interest, with the single version of “Communication” receiving heavy underground airplay.
WHITE VINYL LP 090771568014“Like impenetrable art beloved of loftier-than-though critics, much music de es the limits of my tiny earth brain.”

AN INTERPLANETARY BEAST THAT TOOK OVER FIFTY YEARS TO COME TO FULL TERM!
Sun Ra is still trying to get our attention 50 years after dispatching this transmission. Humanity's path since then makes his message even more urgent today. Years after Herman Poole "LeSony'r Ra" Blount "left the planet" he's still trying to reach us, to wake us up and to change our destiny.
Sun Ra and the Arkestra weren't a traditional studio band, and every star in the vast galaxy of their discography reflects this. The origins of these records can be hard to pinpoint at times, but when it comes to Thunder Of The Gods, it's a bit easier. "Calling Planet Earth - We'll Wait For You" was discovered on tapes from Ra's, Universe In Blue, believed to be recorded in '71. The raucous title track and "Moonshots Across the Sky" are unearthed from the '66 Strange Strings sessions. Modern Harmonic has once again paired Ra's sonic art with the visual art of "The Father of Modern Space Art," Chesley Bonestell, whose 1952 work "Formation of the Earth's Continents" spralls across the front and back covers.
"Thanks to Modern Harmonic, in partnership with Sun Ra LLC, soon you will be holding an album of unreleased Sun Ra music 50 years after it was recorded! That this music survived to reach our ears after all of this time is quite a miraculous gift. It sounds as though it could have come from either the ancient past or the distant future, yet most perfectly, it's the music of right now."
--Christopher Eddy (Sun Ra Arkive)

But among all his Academy Award-nominated scores—to classics like The Shawshank Redemption, Wall-E, Finding Nemo, Saving Mr. Banks, and The Road to Perdition—his score to the 1999 Academy Award-winning Best Picture American Beauty (the first of his many collaborations with director Sam Mendes) remains his most distinctive. That’s because Newman made the bold choice of composing a score almost entirely with percussion instruments, brilliantly intuiting that the lack of melodic resolution in the film’s themes would echo and amplify what he termed the “moral ambiguity” of the script. The result was a haunting and wholly original film score that is instantly recognizable to anyone who has seen the picture. Real Gone Music is very, very proud to present this work of genius on blood red rose vinyl to match the original album art (here used for the first time on a vinyl release) and the film’s shattering conclusion!

Elaine Brown has led a life of distinction. Appointed in August 1974 by Huey Newton from his exile in Cuba to be the one and only female leader of the Black Panther Party, Elaine has pursued a career of community service that continues to this day. But her debut 1969 album Seize the Time leaves one wondering what would have happened had she not put her musical career second. She was first discovered as a performer while singing Thomas Dorsey’s “Precious Lord” at the funeral service for Panther Bunchy Carter. Afterwards, Panther’s Chief of Sta David Hilliard had her audition for him accompanying herself on piano. That session led to her composition “The Meeting” (about an encounter with Eldridge Cleaver) being adopted as the Black Panther Party National Anthem, and an album was commissioned. Elaine enlisted Los Angeles jazz legend Horace Tapscott and his PanAfrikan Peoples Arkestra to arrange and back her, and Seize the Time was born—which the Black Panther Party’s newspaper called “the first songs of the American revolution.”
Blending influences ranging from Bob Dylan to classical, and anchored by Elaine’s powerful delivery of her deeply-felt lyrics, this album will stir your blood whether you agree with its politics or not. Now, with the cooperation of Elaine Brown herself, Seize the Time sees its first-ever American LP reissue, complete with original “uni-pak” packaging featuring lyrics and liner notes, plus an insert with new liner notes by Pat Thomas, author of Listen Whitey! LONNIE LISTON SMITH & THE COSMIC ECHOES
Lonnie Liston Smith and the Cosmic Echoes’ groundbreaking albums for Bob Thiele’s Flying Dutchman label don’t get the attention from jazz fans that they should. In fact, among the many distinguished alumni of Miles Davis’ fusion bands, keyboardist Smith and his cohorts arguably ran with Davis’ stylistic breakthrough the farthest. In fve albums stretching over four years, Smith and the Cosmic Echoes stretched the fusion aesthetic to embrace post-bop modal and spiritual jazz, funk, rock, pop, and even the smooth jazz, quiet storm, and crossover genres. And if those latter styles raise your traditionalist hackles, Smith imbued all of his records with integrity, vision, and his unique spacy sensibiity; instead of playing it safe or commercial, he fearlessly paved a path for modern jazz musicians to follow (Kamasi Washington, for one, no doubt listened to these records at length). Real Gone Music is proud to present Lonnie Liston Smith’s frst two records as a bandleader inside their respective original gatefold jacket artwork… soulful, spiritual, life-enhancing music!

LONNIE LISTON SMITH AND THE COSMIC ECHOES: Astral Traveling
(Limited Clear Yellow “Sunray” Vinyl Edition)

Such a multifaceted ensemble was perfectly suited to explore the spiritual jazz that Smith had encountered while playing with Pharoah Sanders (“Let Us Go into the House of the Lord” appears here and on Sanders’ 1970 album Summun Bukmun Umyun which featured Smith), all presided over by Flying Dutchman label owner and former John Coltrane producer Bob Thiele. Nestled somewhere between the soul jazz, spiritual jazz, fusion, and post-bop subgenres, 1974’s Cosmic Funk headed, as the title indicates, in a funkier direction, with Lonnie Liston Smith’s brother Donald contributing smooth vocal stylings to John Coltrane’s “Naima” among other tunes. The songs of Jon Mckiel are born of the bruised marshlands and craggy shores of the Atlantic coast; places where nature is a powerful wonder and the made -world is in slow decay. His new album, Hex, is a bloodshot pop record steeped in our dystopian present, tempered, across its ten tracks, by an existential umami. It’s the follow -up to 2020’s cult favorite Bobby Joe Hope, which Aquarium Drunkard called “an unlikely masterpiece” and Gorilla vs. Bear listed as one of their favorites of that god -forsaken year.
After two solid decades of refining his practice, during the creation process for Bobby Joe Hope, Mckiel unlocked new sampling techniques, fundamentally changing the way he makes music. Hex sees that practice extended into even more evocative terrain. Performed and produced again in close collaboration with JOYFULTALK’s Jay Crocker, the duo offer up another collection of songs as disquieting as they are comforting. Expertly evoked by Paul Henderson’s twisted collage on the cover, Hex is equal parts flower field and burning building.
The music moves subtly between moods, carrying themes of fate, doom, family, love and distrust in the digital age. The eponymous lead track is an eerie, subterranean banger whose looped percussion and dirt-nasty bassline bring to mind low fi hip hop flipping early 70s Gene Clark. Elsewhere, on ‘Memory Screen Pt 1’, Mckiel’s nostalgia-drenched vocals bring to mind more sounds of the 1970s that appear sonically wider than the largely mono “Bobby Jo Hope”. Then there are moments like ‘Under Burden’, whose skittering drum machine and saccharine synths suggest the cult works of that other Bobby Brown. The album also features Mckiel’s haunting version of a tune called ‘Concrete Sea’, as sung by Terry Jacks (of ‘Seasons In The Sun’ and Poppy Family fame).

“an unlikely masterpiece bringing together two disparate talents and their fleeting impulses. The clues were all there in the album’s first moments: “I fell asleep in yourbeautiful dream.” - Aquarium Drunkard

time
The Bolshoi released three albums during their existence, but they also recorded a fourth album that was never officially released during their tenure. Provisionally titled Country Life, it was released in 2015 as part of a limited 5-CD box set. We are excited to now release it on vinyl for the first time. The album is double colored orange and green vinyl. Country Life consists of demos recorded for the album, and many of these only survived on reference cassettes but were digitally restored. We are especially thrilled that Trevor Tanner has recorded a brand new acoustic reimagining of the song “Dolores Jones” specifically for this release.
The Bolshoi were different. Their songs were dark and subversive, sufficient evidence for many critics to corral them under the ‘Gothic’ banner at the time of their debut - but they really only “flirted” with Goth. They oozed dark, pensive lyrics supported with inventive pop-goth guitar making them nearly impossible to categorize.
The suburban surrealism of the lyrics was rooted in the stories from characters on the fringes of society rather than brooding romantics, with an undercurrent of boredom, inadequacy and violence. Not the usual themes for pop success
Based in London, the band consisted of Trevor Tanner (lead vocals, guitar), Nick Chown (bass), Jan Kalicki (drums) and Paul Clark (keyboards). With powerful live shows The Bolshoi built a substantial following before disbanding in 1988.
“Trevor Tanner’s songs scraped away at the surface of suburban normality to uncover the darkness beneath, and he knew how to deliver a bombastic powerchord and reverb drenched riff” – Q Magazine
“The Bolshoi’s strength lies not only in the clever use of knobs and strings and keys and thigs, the juxtaposition of profanity and purity, innocence and lies, but also in the dank, darkly secret passages of their will.” - Melody Maker
NUBIYAN TWIST FIND YOUR FLAME
9-piece powerhouse Nubiyan Twist embark on a fresh musical odyssey with their vibrant fourth album 'Find Your Flame’. Over 12-track the band seamlessly weaves together global grooves, soul and jazz; expertly intertwined with electronic elements, horn-led melodies and spontaneous improvisation. The album marks a significant evolution for the group as they welcome Sheffieldbased vocalist Aziza Jaye to the forefront, adding a fresh dimension of Patois and RnB to their sound.
The heady, sun-drenched release is peppered with impressive collaborations, including musical legends Nile Rodgers and Seun Kuti who bring their trademark disco and afrobeat mastery to tracks ‘Lights Out’ and ‘Carry Me’ respectively.
Embracing the roots of UK sound system culture, ‘Find Your Flame’ takes dynamic turns, from the frenetic broken beat of the title track to reflective lyricism and lo-fi beats in 'Reach My Soul' and ‘Battle Isn’t Over’. Nubiyan Twist venture into grime and hip hop territory with 'Woman' and 'Pray for Me (Part 1)' featuring rising UK-based MC NEONE the Wonderer. The exploration continues into highlife and soukous with 'Pray for Me (Part 2)' featuring long-time Ghanaian collaborator K.O.G. and neo-soul with the sensual vocals of Ria Moran. The exceptional Corto Alto from Glasgow features on 'You Don't Know Me’.
‘Find Your Flame’ culminates in a sublime collaboration with ex-Salif Keïta backing singer Mamani Keïta, paying homage to traditional Malian music and the roots of the genres elegantly woven throughout the album.
“As with the creation of all our albums, it’s a snapshot of our collective influences and journeys throughout the time it was made.” Explains bandleader & producer Tom Excell. “A catharsis for our struggles, yet a vessel for our joy. Navigating through COVID, the magic of becoming a new parent, undergoing a vital leg amputation, recovering from car accidents, losing loved ones and forming new friendships have all shaped this music. But most importantly, the collaborative process helped reignite a liberating fire of resistance in each of us.”
Gaining international acclaim, 'Find Your Flame' is poised to enhance Nubiyan Twist's global appeal, firmly establishing them as a prominent soulful collective in the UK music scene. Produced by Tom Excell and mixed by Oli Barton Wood and Paulo Germano, the album features artwork by Max Bloom and is mastered by Peter Beckmann. The band is scheduled to embark on a European tour starting in April 2024.

SticklerPhonics explores a world of brass ‘n’ skin on debut album Technicolor Ghost Parade featuring drummer Scott Amendola, trombonist Danny Lubin-Laden and tenor saxophonist Raffi Garabedian. The trio revels “in a situation where there’s no bass and no chords,” Amendola says. “Our sound is ever evolving and there’s a feeling we can go anywhere.”
“Danny and I are so melodic together and Scott brings this groove element, so I try to consider all those elements”, says Garabedian.
Lubin-Laden adds, “SticklerPhonics feels very exposed, but there’s this freedom in being able to accompany each other when we take solos,” says Lubin-Laden.
From traditional jazz polyphony and ambient soundscapes to funk and free jazz. The trio can generate fierce grooves and render through-composed pieces with the textural acuity of a chamber ensemble.
Technicolor Ghost Parade plunges into the unmediated terrain that opens up in the absence of the usual guidelines, the trio revels “in a situation where there’s no bass and no chords." The band is a volatile combo that draws on a vast continuum of jazz practices, from traditional jazz polyphony and ambient soundscapes to funk and free jazz. The trio can generate fierce grooves and render through-composed pieces with the textural acuity of a chamber ensemble. The canny use of electronics expands their sonic palette to the horizon.

Elkka’s debut follows the recently released limited “DJ Friendly” White Label, which hit #23 in the OCC Top 40 Official Vinyl Singles Chart , and her contribution to the legendary DJ Kicks compilation series, which featured contributions from Herbert, Gerd Janson, Paula Tape, Villager, PederMannerfelt, Hodge, Mark Pritchard, and more.
Elkka’s incredible live show is a must watch and her DJ sets draw huge crowds (at Glastonbury 2023 she played the Arcadia stage, sharing the billing with The Chemical Brothers, Floating Points B2B Daphni and Sherelle, with 2 other sets (at Stonebridge Bar with Dan Shake and a secret Platform 23 B2B set with Eliza Rose).
Elkka has previously received US radio support from the likes of KEXP, KCRW, KUCI and more. Singles have also charted on the NACC charts with the major support across college & community stations. Elkka is confirmed for a 7 page spread in the S/S edition of famed publication Disco Pogo and has a confirmed double page spread in CLASH’s March issue.

Trumpeter Steph Richards’ latest full-length, Power Vibe marries avant garde and cinematic moods with an infectious and patently pleasing tunefulness. “Sensory electronics” –– subtle but compelling textures and tactile rhythms which are physically triggered by drum-mounted sensors –– compel fascination here, interweaving a kind of aural hyper-lucidity throughout the record.
Though boldly original, this music strides surefootedly alongside the work of contemporaries like Nicole Mitchell and the late jaimie branch. What’s more, the record is built around a series of musical cues that, when played, redirect all the players to move into a new structure. The trick is that any of the players can play one of these cues at any time, ensuring that the music unfolds in an even more radically democratic way than in totally open-ended improvised music performance. While Richards’ virtuosity and boundless creativity is clearly on display here, pianist Joshua White, whose playing sometimes veers into McCoy Tyner rapture, and drummers Gerald Cleaver and Max Jaffe do more than simply support –– instead, their playing proceeds from a sense of commitment and soulfulness that is born of that redistribution of power. And Stomu Takeishi’s upright and electric bass guitar playing helps to push these tunes headlong into realms of groove and infectious kinesis that make it what it is: remarkable.
Certainly fans of Ron Miles’, Wadada Leo Smith’s or Don Cherry’s adventurous and joyful playing and collaborating will find much to love in this work. But the vibe here belongs to Steph Richards.

Elevating, uplifting and beautifully arranged. Jasmine Myra's sophomore album Rising builds on the success of her breakthrough album Horizons to deliver a major statement from one of UK Jazz's rising stars. Produced by Matthew Halsall and mixed by Greg Freeman (Hania Rani, Matthew Halsall, Portico Quartet), Rising delivers a confident and vibrant follow up that joins the musical dots between Myra’s influences Kenny Wheeler, Bonobo and Shabaka Hutchings while delivering something unique, beautiful and profound.
Rising is also the sound of a composer and performer growing in stature and adding extra layers of confidence and poise to both her playing and composing. Aided and abetted by Matthew Halsall who once again lends his production skills, Rising is fuller, richer and deeper as Myra develops her uniquely uplifting sound.
Much like my first album, Rising is a reflection of a period of my life. It is a continuation from Horizons, which was all about my experience during lockdown, and entailed overcoming my struggles with mental health. Following on from that experience, I set out to continue building my self-confidence. This album has an uplifting and spiritual sound, drawing influence from artists such as Makaya McCraven, Bonobo and Shabaka Hutchings.
Rising features the same core of musicians as Myra’s debut album Horizons (Gondwana records GOND052):guitarist Ben Haskins , drummer George Hall pianist Jasper Green, harpist Alice Roberts (who both also perform with Matthew Halsall) and bassist Sam Quintana who collectively bring a deft understating of the subtle textures of Myra’s music and perform with a collective empathy and drive that really pushes the music on a radiant journey. And a string quartet add gently elevating textures to Still Waters, Knowingness, From Embers and How Tall The Mountains.
Pressed on high quality black bio-vinyl at Optimal in Germany for maximum soundquality.
