This Issue: Nate Nelson and Jamie Strong at Innovative Leisure
a few vinyl LP’s & some downloads, having fun and not losing too much money. Now we have to run a business and make sure that we’re meeting goals, spending wisely, and servicing artist teams efficiently. The script has flipped but we still try to find a little fun in it.
We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?
Jamie Strong: I plead the 5th. They’re all quite special & unique in their own ways, but one common recent theme relates to BADBADNOTGOOD as they produced Jonah Yano’s new album (portrait of a dog) & we were quite fortunate to release the debut solo album (Anyhow) from BBNG member Leland Whitty.
What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?
Floppy Disks for BADBADNOTGOOD or CALL (833)777-KFLR
How did you personally get started in the music industry?
Jamie started at Ubiquity Records; Nate started in music supervision at Sony Pictures Television. We met each other when we both started working at Stones Throw Records around the same time in 2005.
When and where did the label begin?
Jamie was doing sales and marketing at Stones Throw. Nate was doing digital sales/synch licensing there and had started a little offshoot called Innovative Leisure to do some small one-off projects. We started taking it more seriously when we started on Hanni El Khatib’s Will The Guns Come Out LP and all partnered together to start signing some bigger releases (Nick Waterhouse, Rhye, Allah-Las, Nosaj Thing, etc). We left Stones Throw, maxed out our credit cards and started working from Nate’s kitchen table.
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
It’s a maxim yanked from an old toy manual Nate had as a kid.
How has the label changed since it started?
The business side of things may have changed due to the world of streaming, but the overall ethos of the label is still the same - we put out music that we like regardless of the genre or scale of an artist.
Describe the general makeup of your team at the label.
Jamie Strong: There’s a core team internally where Nate Nelson & I are pretty hands-on with every project alongside our EU Team (Positive Subversion) & bespoke promo teams.
What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?
Touring has been the biggest challenge & the changing landscape for developing artists in the venue & booking agency space.
Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?
Since we are based in LA, there’s an abundance of talented artists on the West Coast so we have quite a lot of California based artists, but at the same time, good music exists everywhere so we have artists from Canada to England & Thailand to The Netherlands.
Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about?
We don’t “go” anywhere as much as we listen to things that are sent to us. Typically we’re signing things that are brought to us or by us by friends and associates that we’ve had over the years. Lots of good things coming down the pike like UK grime rapper Rarelyalways, more great music from LA’s Mapache & a new Brazilian act called dadáJoãozinho.
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
Definitely a mix. We like all types of music so we tend to not be tied down to a genre or style.
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?
When we started there was no real ambition outside of (hopefully) selling
If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outside-thebox” or “crossover” marketing campaign?
Can’t give up our secret sauce for someone else to do first. ; )
Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs??
If there’s demand, we’ll make whatever format a fan wants! i.e. The BADBADNOTGOOD floppy disk sells for $50 on Discogs.
How would you describe the average fan of the label?
Our roster is so diverse so I’m not sure that’s possible to describe, but I think one commonality is an openness to all types of sounds.
Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own?
Yeah Nate has always tried to dabble in bands since his high school days (check out WeBreakCameras & Death Boner!!) and Jamie DJ’s and runs a successful party outside of Innovative Leisure called the Do-Over.
In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days?
It can be difficult to achieve sometimes depending on the project / art / packaging, but it is something we continue to monitor & look for ways to integrate these practices when the opportunity presents itself. How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?
Extremely important. We’ve had artists that have dealt with both issues & our job as a good partner goes well beyond the business side of things, where it’s important to listen & offer support to our artists however we can. What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
I think what keeps the music industry stagnant is too much of a focus on how things used to be vs focusing on the present & future. You can’t change how people consume music so it’s either adapt & embrace it or time to hang up the shoes.
If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards?
The idea of a reissue side to Innovative Leisure has always been intriguing so maybe Innovative Reissue will come to fruition one day. ; )
Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance:
Jamie Strong: I’m a sucker for Groove Merchant in San Francisco. Cool Chris is as cool as they come. His wealth of knowledge & collection is unreal yet is as humble as they get.
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered?
That we were consistent over the label’s history putting out the highest quality of music, no matter the genre, if you saw the logo you knew it was something you could trust.

Yves Tumor reveals a complex intimacy with each album: offering glimpses in familiarizing with Sean Lee Bowie, while simultaneously elevating the beautiful myths and fantasies that embolden our connections to art and music. ‘Praise A Lord...’ offers the widest narrative shot yet, opening with a literal breath and a naked voice that’s spoken to you from a dark nightmarish depth and ending in an almost spiritual church-like celebration; uniquely different songs struck cohesively as album that begs to be reopened and re-experienced. The listener is empowered in that spectrum between moody darkness and bright excitement with songs that carry a wild variety of exalting emotion from highs to lows, making for a radical artistic statement redefining pop experience in that authentic engagement. Yves Tumor’s sound is clear and unmistaking yet unpredictable, with an identity that is universally charismatic through an androgynous presentation that is sexual, poetic, and honest: an overall presence that will never need to conform because it is continuously shifting and redefining what the pop world begins to emulate. Indigo De Souza
All of This Will End
APRIL 28TH, 2023
“One of indie rock’s most versatile young voices .”
- The New Yorker
“Indigo De Souza captures hearts with her unruly vocals and stinging lyrics deliver.”
- Nylon
Indie Exclusive LP pressed on “Emerald Tower” green vinyl. Limited to 1,000 copies. LP includes digital download
“I was nally able to trust myself fully,” says Indigo De Souza of making her masterful third album All of This Will End. When the North Carolina-based artist released her compelling and explosive second LP Any Shape You Take in 2021, it led to a successful year of sold out tours and rave reviews from outlets like Pitchfork, the New York Times, and the New Yorker. Across 11 songs, the LP, which is out April 28, is a raw and radically optimistic work that grapples with mortality, the rejuvenation that community brings, and the importance of centering yourself now. These tracks come from the most resonant moments of her life: childhood memories, collecting herself in parking lots, the ecstatic trips spent wandering Appalachian mountains and southern swamps with friends, and the times she had to stand up for herself. “All of This Will End feels more true to me than anything ever has,” she says.
All of This Will End boasts songs that run the gamut of human emotion. There’s pain and sadness, sure, but there’s a triumphant spirit of resilience throughout. Take the single “Smog,” which is exuberant, danceable, and about the exhilaration that comes from breaking out of daily monotony. Elsewhere, she’s introspective, like in the soul-shattering “Always,” which excavates her relationship with her father. But in the single “The Water,” she transforms a childhood memory of visiting her best friend into a meditation on growing up and the fragility of relationships. Over a programmed drum beat, she sings, “I think about what it was like / That summer when we were young and you did it with that guy in his car.” Though she’s no longer as close to that person as she was when they were kids, there’s power in reminiscing.
In many ways, All of This Will End has become a personal motto for Indigo. “Every day I wake up with the thought that this could be the end,” she says. “You could look at it as a sad thing, or you could look at it as a really precious thing: Today I'm alive and at some point, I will not be in this body anymore. But for now, I can do so much with being alive.” There’s a peacefulness in acceptance throughout. As she sings on the title track, “I’m only loving only moving through and trying my best / Sometimes it’s not enough but I’m still real and I forgive.” She describes the experience of writing this song as “magic,” as if everything about it from the words and melody had felt timeless and intangible and that she was just writing it down. Like the hues of reds and oranges that her mother painted on the LP cover, All of This Will End marks a warmer and unmistakably audacious era for her. It’s a statement about fearlessly moving forward from the past into a gratitude- lled present, feeling it all every step of the way, and choosing to embody loving awareness.

SKINNY PELEMBE
OVERVIEW
'Hardly The Same Snake' is Skinny Pelembe's sophomore album, but his first fully embracing his artistic self. Visceral yet inherently soulful, 'Hardly The Same Snake' is the sound of the Johannesburg-born, Doncaster-raised artist finally finding his voice - both literally and figuratively. In practical terms, that involved finding the courage to foreground his gravelly baritone in these gloriously genre-agnostic productions. But it also meant branching out beyond the safety net of his former label - Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings - to figure out the artist he truly wanted to be. As Skinny puts it today, in his soft South Yorkshire drawl, "This album is what I would have created, first time round had I rated my own voice."
Determined that the album shouldn't sound like a band record, but equally mustn't feel "too button push-y", Skinny assembled songs by sampling instrumentation originally recorded live, including chopped and looped versions of the brilliantly complex beats played by Malcolm Catto of The Heliocentrics. It was a painstaking process that paid off, resulting in an album fathoms ahead of its promising predecessor, and one that honestly reflects Skinny's creative evolution.
The idea of forging your own path - and shedding skin, so to speak - is integral to 'Hardly The Same Snake'. It's a defiantly outward-looking record contemplating family, religion and major life milestones, from parenthood to death.

“…offers up a delicious groove for listeners to fall in with from the moment it begins, while Byrne’s soothing voice lulls you along…”
– Billboard
“A frolicking sensibility guides her words, as she free-wheels it into the horizon’s setting gaze for a new unexpected adventure. It’s as replenishing as it is totally soothing.” – To The Point Music
Playing Americana steeped with potent branches of blues, rock, glam and country music, Mya Byrne is every bit the voice of the outsider that built the foundation of the genre, where we behold stages beaming with the light of those who are so willing to stand tall and confident in the entirety of their truth. Here Byrne stands too. Americana has many champions, but there are scarce few like Byrne; a queer trans woman creating ripples that will find themselves born again and again as waves.
On Rhinestone Tomboy, Byrne’s forthcoming record and first release under the Kill Rock Stars Nashville imprint label, we are treated to a portrait painted with shades of Byrne’s youth, one spent listening to stacks of dusty 45s and 8-tracks blasting from blown speakers out the window of a Chevy. Songs that opened the trailhead to a lifelong journey that informed Byrne’s musical landscape.

MELATI ESP hipernatural
The music of Melati ESP aka Melati Malay is a euphoric vision of megacity rhythm and rainforest escape, club breaks and weightless pop, mapping new dreams from the sound of futures passed: hipernatural.
Drawing on the music era of her teenage years growing up in Jakarta – Javanese radio Dangdut, gamelan cassettes, Moving Shadow-era liquid jungle, Japanese chillout, etc. – as well as her current work in progressive percussion trio Asa Tone, Malay’s solo debut is boldly borderless, bridging worlds and wavelengths into a richly imagined hybrid synthetic utopia.
hipernatural is momentous linguistically, too, as Malay’s first foray into singing in Indonesian, the language of her youth. She characterizes her lyrical mode as “abstract, and a bit broken,” an intuitive collage of diaristic emotion and oblique poetry (“plant me in fleeting twilight / missing home, where is home? / I am another you”). Her voice serves as its own versatile instrument, alternately intimate and alien, sensual and sacred, shaded with the haze of hidden heavens.
Co-produced with long-time collaborator Kaazi (100% Silk, Asa Tone), the album’s 12 tracks are cohesive but eclectic, threading through temple bass music, cyber siren techno, Stereolab drum n bass, new age downtempo, and dial-up rave reveries, flecked with tactile fragments of offworld dialogue, computer hum, bubbling water, and beyond.
Malay’s technique of sampling and processing her voice into an electronic palette which she then performs on generative instruments gives the songs a bewitching artificial intelligence elegance, exquisite but uncanny. Hers is a hybridity both organic and hypermodern, deeply personal yet globally sourced – YouTube rips, nature tapes, cheap sample packs, club bootlegs. hipernatural champions a dynamic new language at the axis of then and now, of east and west, planting fresh roots in a future still being born: “Cocoon world / it’s a rare earth / earthless / decolonize your mind / unlearn everything.”

BRIAN BLADE MAMA ROSA
The lyrical themes of home, memories and loved ones and how they shape us are reflected in Brian naming the album after his grandmother, who's the subject of the album's opening song "After the Revival." Sung from the perspective of his mother, Dorothy Blade, expecting the birth of her first son, Brian's older brother, Brady, Jr. “After the Revival" also alludes to Blade's early years at the Zion Baptist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana where his father is pastor and where Brian first started singing and playing the drums.
Brian has been writing and recording material with words for as long as he's been making music. In fact, Mama Rosa grew naturally from the four-track home demos that he's recorded over the years and several of the original performances from those tapes can be heard on this album. Initially, Blade felt that these songs would never be heard by anyone else, but after encouragement from long time friend, Daniel Lanois, these home recordings became the cornerstones for the album. There is an initial spark close to the moment of inspiration and that intimate vibe is felt throughout Mama Rosa .
Artist Biography
"I remember when I first read the words hanging in a frame on my grandma Rosa's wall. The serenity prayer was something I couldn't understand until almost thirty years later, but now after experiencing some peaks and valleys of life, those words ring in my ears with clarity."
Brian Blade has set those words to music for his first recording as a singer, guitarist and songwriter entitled, Mama Rosa. A revealing journey through thirteen songs about family, loved ones, travels and a sense that these things that shape and inspire us have to be shared with others to complete a circle.

“Camelot”
by Star Moles"Camelot splices Medieval period romanticism and the lore surrounding King Arthur ’s Court with Moales’ mythic and candlelit indie pop captured through the indubitable analog recording rigs of Kevin Basko." - New Commute
"Big-hearted DIY mix that renders the fantastical imagery of glam with a crushing electro-pop wave." - Glide Magazine
"Intensely personal songwriting, Moales found that escape in creating the sublime Camelot. The album displays Star Moles’ ability to craft timeless yet eternally present bedroom pop." - Psychedelic Baby
"piano-driven, retro girl group inspired song “Bloodhounds.” "The song is built around a cascading piano figure that while sonically upbeat, lyrically carries more ominous tones." - MXDWN
Description: Though Moales envisioned Camelot as an escape, the record equally provided a way to address it head on Album highlight “Not My Heart” takes a tale of unrequited love on a Casiotone waltz before bursting into a classic AM pop jangle, the imagery of Camelot swirling through the mix like a fluttering banner That clever duality is boosted by the production of Kevin Basko, whose work with Foxygen and his solo project, Rubber Band Gun were a major inspiration The buoyant indie pop of songs like “Spider Queen” bear that out, letting lyrics about the titular monarch meld with a story of a troubled interpersonal relationship

Exactly two years after the release of ΠΟΛΙΣ, Subheim returns with RAEON; a collection of eight new tracks for lonely evenings and long night drives.
With RAEON, Subheim continues to expand into the sonic area he has steadily been exploring since 2015’s Foray, the album that marked a conscious shift towards moodier, lo-fi territory. While this new release feels like a natural continuation of the producer’s most recent work, it is also entirely stripped of any percussive elements with the focus being placed on space, ambience and melody.
Each composition feels like a distant, fading memory that unfolds faster than you‘d expect it to and dissolves into an echoing nothingness before you’re able to hold on to it for more than a few seconds. Much like a long-distance train passing by, the momentary flickering of city lights at night or a song you might hear in your sleep.
Every piece functions as a di erent chapter of the same open-ended narrative; one where stillness, movement, darkness and light simultaneously coexist in harmony. Intentionally imperfect, naturally gritty, spacious as ever, the record balances between fragility and conviction, and once more reveals the deeply human side of its creator.
In contrast to some of Subheim‘s darker material, RAEON is filled with an undertone of bittersweet hopefulness and a strong desire for new life. With the juxtaposition of nostalgic, synthesized, analog sounds and neoclassical elements, this mini-album strikes a near perfect balance between past and future, melancholy and anticipation. And while the closing track is almost ironically called “Forget”, its ending will surely leave you longing for more.

09. The Excellent Spiritual Serviceman
After a creative break of more than 10 years the Contemporary Noise Ensemble returns with the brand new album called „An Excellent Spiritual Serviceman”. With the band’s line-up reduced and the sound of the brass section replaced with programmable synthesizers comes an entirely new sound of the band’s music. Leaning towards composition instead of improvisation the music is now less jazzy sounding - with electric bass being used instead of double bass and drums actually being the only strictly acoustical instrument. But then again you can hear a lot of other prerecorded instruments like marimba, vibraphone, Rhodes and upright pianos surrounded by arpeggiated synths and other programmable electronic instruments. The album takes you to a journey through jazz, space rock, funk and electronic music with a destination in a form of a rock song which is as well the title song of the album. The Contemporary Noise Ensemble still impresses with maturity and class.

After a creative break of more than 10 years finally the comeback: In line with the long-awaited new album called „An Excellent Spiritual Serviceman“ a limited colored Vinyl Reissue of the classic Contemporary Noise Ensemble debut record „Pig Inside The Genleman“ from 2006.
„Jazz music without jazz, film music without movie but something splendid instead! Despite the band‘s name suggesting noisy music for the chosen ones, Contemporary Noise Ensemble appears to be a revelation for everyone. Beautiful, hard, romantic piano tunes in the dialogue with brass section. Simple and extraordinary emotional compositions leading to the climax which makes the flesh creeps while listening. Hair bristle on the heads of those who remember the musical past of the The Contemporary Noise Ensemble members...“
„The Contemporary Noise Ensemble impresses with maturity and class. There‘s elegance as well as punk energy. The compositions are unbelievably spacious but on the other hand all fulfilled with instruments - from the superb rhythm combo to the greatly equipped brass section. The roots of the most of The Contemporary Noise Ensemble musicians reach harder music, sometimes even heavy metal what bears excellent interest. The compositions are vigorous and expressive. The name of the band must be remembered because it undoubtedly is Polish export commodity.“
„There’s no doubt that the Contemporary Noise Ensemble is one of the most fascinating musical projects from Poland which catches the attention of both pure jazz fans and people who are interested in experimental instrumental music in general. For fans of Cinematic Orchestra & jazz influenced film sounds.“

In April 2023, Anglo American duo Baba Ali return with their second album Laugh Like A Bomb, set for release via Memphis Industries With the news, the pair have shared lead single ‘Burn Me Out’, a documentation of their creative ethos and the societal urge to overindulge to the point of exhaustion.
Having previously collaborated with Al Doyle (LCD Soundsystem/Hot Chip) on their debut album, this time the duo absconded to Doyle’s studio in his own touring absence and took to production duties themselves. Laugh Like A Bomb was recorded in just three weeks before being mixed by Sheffield producer Ross Orton (Working Men’s Club / Arctic Monkeys / MIA).
“I think a lot of the process of writing this album came from pushing ourselves to our limits to get to the essential idea, and discarding anything that felt superfluous or unnecessary.” explains Baba. “There was a lot of writing, re-writing, deleting, re-recording and then just repeating that process again. A lot of times the best idea would come out of that final push when you’re too exhausted to even think and you rely on feeling.”
Returning following the release of their debut ‘Memory Device’ in 2020 and 18 months of touring across Europe and the US with the likes of Yard Act and Chk Chk Chk, Baba Ali have created an incendiary follow up with one foot firmly placed on the dance floor, the other in a state of constant frenzy. Laugh Like A Bomb showcases anxious synths and scratchy guitars that collide with concrete drum hits, pulsing bass and Baba’s snarly vocals in 40 minute collection that explores feelings of unease, abandon and desire as well explorations into the more sinister.

OVERVIEW:
Soundway presents a double-sider of raw, West Indian Funk from 1977. Led by King Wellington’s ‘Shango’, the stand-out cut harvested from his Sooner Or Later LP finally gets the 45 treatment it deserves. Inspired by the Shango ritual with its roots in Yoruba culture, traces of Calypso music are driven by hypnotic bass and Wellington’s signature vocal, making up a musical blend only found in the Caribbean.
Hidden on the B-side, ‘Mystery Music’ fronted by Canadian musician Tony Springer, embarks on a dreamy, dynamic and even a touch psychedelic trip. Steel pans coupled with floating horns, electronic keyboard effects, crisp drums and subtle guitar licks cook up a soundscape baked by the Trinidad sun. While original copies climb their way to impossible-to-find status, enthusiasts will be excited to hear this sought after piece of music is available on the 45 format again.

Marta When It's Going Wrong
Marta Złakowska is a Polish vocalist who started her career when she happened to meet visionary musician and maverick Tricky, in November 2017 In the past six years after she joined the band, she went on tour and later on diligently worked in the studio on several recordings before finishing When It’s Going Wrong, her arresting debut album produced by Tricky. Going back and forth on lonely train rides between her home in Krakow and the studio in Berlin, Marta became aware that her dream is finally turning to reality as the record is soon to be released.
“Marta can do what she wants now. She has fans before having any release of her own” Tricky
When It’s Going Wrong is the sound of an emerging artist not only finding her creative voice but her inner power; the journey through self-doubt, hardship and uncer tainty - whatever brings one to the other side Marta remembers that moment when Tricky turned to her in the studio and quietly said: “You don’t make the music, the music makes you"

The most personal piece of songwriting and accompanying artwork that Lydon has ever shared. The song is a love letter to John's wife of nearly 5 decades, Nora, who is living with Alzheimer’s. A pensive, personal yet universal love song that will resonate with many, the song sees John reflecting on their lifetime well spent and in particular one of their happiest moments together in Hawaii. The powerfully emotional ballad is as close as John will ever come to bearing his soul. “It is dedicated to everyone going through tough times on the journey of life, with the person they care for the most,” John says. “It’s also a message of hope that ultimately love conquers all.”
“Uncharacteristically soul-bearing” - Pitchfork
“a beautiful and rueful ballad written by 66 -year-old Lydon to his wife Nora, who suffers from Alzheimer’s. It’s a peach of a track: both pensive and personal, it reflects on one of their happiest times together in Hawaii. “Remember me/ I remember you… You are loved,” over a lush soundscape of gently twanging guitars vaguely reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac’s Albatross.” - Telegraph

David Tattersall - On The Sunny Side Of The Ocean
Where Its At Is Where You Are
LP WIA111LP 5057805967996
David Tattersall, the Wave Pictures guitarist and frontman releases a solo album of interpretations of John Fahey tunes, recorded live in the studio. "I have been a fan of John Fahey's music since I was very young; it has always been with me and I can't remember a time when I wasn't affected by it. It is weird music, and very good. Of course, Fahey is an important cult figure in the history of music: as the first man to find a language for steel string guitar that can stand proudly alongside the established tradition of nylon string classical guitar.. John Fahey's beautiful discography shows that the guitar can carry as much mystery and soul as the human voice, and simply put, I wanted in on a little of this action. This is my second all -instrumental solo acoustic album, and where this differs from my first attempt, Little Martha, is that here I improvised freely. I used Fahey's originals only as guides. I'm not sure what I was looking for, perhaps something beyond explanation, but I tried to be as free as possible, and I am delighted by the spontaneous results. ."

An Inbuilt Fault
May 5th, 2023
Westerman’s highly anticipated second LP ‘An Inbuilt Fault’ is a complex and endlessly rewarding collection of layered songwriting. The album’s nine songs took shape throughout the depths of the pandemic and soundtrack Westerman’s reckoning with two years of intense isolation, loneliness, heartbreak, and dread. The phrase “an inbuilt fault” itself is an examination of the inherent and innate flaws that make us human – a visceral response to Westerman’s disillusionment with AI and social media during this time period.
The record that ultimately emerged from Westerman’s early solo experiments sounds wholly unlike what the description might suggest. A creative shift in the album came after a chance meeting between Westerman and Big Thief’s James Krivchenia at a show in London, inspiring Westerman to take a leap of faith and collaborate with the drummer and an extended crew of Los Angeles associates to flesh out his new songs. Once in LA, his demos became jumping-off points for jams which, in imaginatively edited forms, pushed the songs into new realms; sometimes, the mood became more sinister, sometimes more triumphant. Through it all, the album is visceral and live-sounding, full of the sound of breath and the idiosyncratic gestures of acoustic instruments. It creates a spatial feeling, sounding like musicians assembled in a room, passing evolving ideas back and forth. Co-produced with Krivchenia, ‘An Inbuilt Fault’ exhibits music that is heavier and more sonically daring than Westerman’s previous releases, and it is the most adventurous and unselfconscious songwriting of Will Westerman’s career.
‘An Inbuilt Fault’ follows Westerman’s acclaimed 2020 debut ‘Your Hero Is Not Dead,’ a graceful and self-reflective project which earned him a spot as one of the most talked about new artists of the year thanks to profiles from Pitchfork (‘Rising’), Stereogum (‘Artist To Watch’), and Rolling Stone (‘Artist You Need To Know’).
The incredible return of Will Westerman.
The album features the collaboration of Big Thief’s James Krivchenia on percussion and as a co-producer with Will.
Great early press support from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Stereogum, The FADER, FLOOD, Gorilla vs. Bear, Brooklyn Vegan, Clash Magazine, DIY, Dork, The Line of Best Fit, Nylon, Our Culture, and Under The Radar. Incredible playlist support from Spotify (New Music Friday, All New Indie, The Other List, Ultimate Indie), Apple (New Music Daily, Untitled, New In Alternative, Indie + Chill, New In Indie), and Amazon Music (Fresh Indie).

HENRY FRANKLIN TRIBAL DANCE
(BLACK VINYL EDITION)
STREET DATE: MAY 5, 2023
We at Real Gone Music were so knocked out by The Skipper and The Skipper at Home, the two Black Jazz-label releases we put out from Henry Franklin, that we hunted down the rights to his next record, Tribal Dance, recorded in 1977 for the little-known Catalyst label. You will find many of the same players that made Franklin’s two Black Jazz albums so intense and enjoyable, including saxophonist Charles Owens, trombonist Al Hall, Jr., and guitarist Kenneth Climax, along with West Coast jazz stalwarts like percussionist Sonship and pianist Dwight Dickerson. As the title indicates, Tribal Dance leans a little more spiritual, but without losing the pulsing drive of its predecessors (and how could it, with The Skipper at the helm on bass!). Never before reissued on vinyl, with original gatefold artwork intact…and pressed at Gotta Groove Records where we made the Black Jazz records!

MEDESKI MARTIN & WOOD: Friday Afternoon in the Universe
Black Vinyl Edition
STREET DATE: MAY 5, 2023
Its title taken from the first line of “Old Angel Midnight” by Jack Kerouac (himself a legendary improviser), 1995’s Friday Afternoon in the Universe flings a whole lot at the wall and just about everything sticks, with mid-‘70s Miles Davis the predominant hue in an ever-changing sonic palette. “Chubb Sub” is a favorite, and was used prominently in the Get Shorty soundtrack, but even the most abstract numbers groove and move. Though the trio of John Medeski, Billy Martin, and Chris Wood had already expanded the jazz genre with their first three records (two of which we have reissued here at Real Gone Music), it was this 1996 album that really crossed over and won the ensemble a whole new legion of listeners in the “jam band” camp. Recorded in a remote, solar-powered plywood shack in Hawaii (hence the title), Shack-Man brought the ‘70s soul-jazz beloved by the band firmly into the ‘90s, propelled by Medeski’s simultaneously nostalgic yet forward-thinking excursions on the Hammond B-3. A masterpiece of groove, out on vinyl for the first time!

The Reverend Horton Heat ain’t just a person, or a band—it’s a state of mind. Drawing on such crazed rockabilly ancestors as Charlie Feathers, Hasil Adkins, and The Killer himself, James (Reverend Horton) Heath and his long-time bassist Jimbo Wallace have, over the course of the last 30-plus years, helped bring rockabilly kicking and screaming into the modern age, marrying punk with rockabilly to create the psychobilly genre. And, on their 2000 album Spend the Night in the Box—which, to burnish the “psycho” credentials, was produced by fellow Texan Paul Leary of Butthole Surfers fame—The Reverend Horton Heat struck gold (hence our gold vinyl edition!), going to #2 on the CMJ charts on the strength of such numbers as “Sue Jack Daniels,” “The Girl in Blue,” and other misbegotten tales of babes and booze. This is actually a bit of a return to a classic rockabilly/swing sound, powered by the Rev’s 1954 Gibson ES-175 and the rhythm section of Wallace and drummer Scott Churilla, but it’s no less (ahem) heated. Vinyl debut boasting inner sleeve with lyrics!

OVERVIEW
Fase Luna is the ocean-inspired, wobbly-pop filled third album, by LA Priest, aka Sam Eastgate. Following 2020’s GENE, named after a modular drum machine that Sam designed using 150 electrical circuits he’d built himself, Fase Luna strips things back to little more than Sam and his guitar: nine sunshine-streaked tracks of pure bliss.
Recording in Mexico and the rainforests of Costa Rica, Fase Luna draws inspiration from each area’s mythical history and ancient connections to the ocean, drawing heavily on both to pack Fase Luna with stories of spirits and imaginations of life on the ocean bed. Raw and unfiltered, Fase Luna offers a one-way ticket to another world.

A SONIC APÉRITIF!
This is the apéritif that started the album that helped start the cocktail and exotica rebirth of the ‘90s! It’s hard to call recordings as lush and beautiful as these demos, but that’s what they are. These reels preceded the band’s Subpop debut I, Swinger, and contains early versions of most of that album along with songs you’ve never heard them do on record before!
The devil’s in the demos! A singing, dancing tour of the seven wonders of the cocktail world hosted by Satan—it’s as awesome an origin story as any band could want. Especially the ensemble that kicked o the ‘90s neo-lounge scene.
In 1992, the band squeezed into bassist Nicholas Cudahy’s living room to cut a home demo on his eight-track cassette recorder. “I think we recorded Liz in the bathroom,” reports drummer/vibraphonist Aaron Oppenheimer. “And then Nick mastered it down to these two-track tapes.” The process was anything but laborious. “Every song we played maybe a couple of takes. And then Nick went and locked himself in the room and came out with a demo.”
Some songs wouldn’t make it to the band’s 1994 Sub Pop debut album, I, Swinger, and some would never see the inside of a proper studio at all.
In their nal I, Swinger versions, the bulk of the demo tunes sparked a nationwide movement. Legions of musicians swapped the Stooges and Ramones for Esquivel and Arthur Lyman in their pantheon of in uences. But the tape that started it all was buried for decades until Nick unearthed it.
In hindsight, the 1992 recordings seem as shockingly prescient as they were anachronistic, having foreshadowed everything from neo-swing to post-rock. And the ripples are still spreading. “I do feel like there is yet another resurgence of cocktail culture and tiki bars and things,” Oppenheimer avers. “Maybe it'll nd a new audience. And maybe those folks who were fans 30 years ago will think, ‘Oh, yeah, that stu is pretty good!’ It's exciting.”

DADDY LONG LEGS LOWDOWN WAYS
RELEASE DATE: 5/05/2023
Lowdown Ways marks a quantum creative leap for DADDY LONG LEGS, the scrappy New York trio known for their stripped-down roots sound and in-your- face intensity that’s garnered them fans in their hometown and overseas, where they’ve toured with such kindred spirits as The Damned, The Sonics, Hurray for the Riff Raff and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. They’ve been recognized by Rolling Stone, who aptly compared them to “Chicago blues fired at the moon, played by the demented children of the Pretty Things.”
This expansive, new territory that the band covers on Lowdown Ways is thanks to producer (and JD McPherson bassist) Jimmy Sutton, with whom the band recorded the album at Chicago’s Hi-Style Studios, applies his technical know-how to broaden the sound of such instantly memorable tunes as “Pink Lemonade” (co-written by McPherson), “Ding Dong Dang” and “Bad Neighborhood,” which resonate with the down-and-dirty roots that have always been DADDY LONG LEGS’ inspiration. Meanwhile, the band ventures successfully into unfamiliar territory with the pub-rock-style “Winners Circle,” the bittersweet acoustic ballad “Back Door Fool” and the dramatic album-closer “Wrong Side of the River.”
“…beams bluesy rockabilly from a distant satellite to quench thirsty ears.” –NPR
“…the coolest, most authentically groovy band you’ve never heard of.” –No Depression
“DADDY LONG LEGS takes the blues and turns them inside out, upside down, round about and renews their primal energy. My favorite rompin’ stompin’ New York band of the moment.” –Lenny Kaye

Soul Jazz Records Presents STUDIO ONE SPACE-AGE DUB SPECIAL
5th May 2023
More 100% essential Studio One tunes!
Studio One Space-Age Dub Special is a brand-new Studio One release on Soul Jazz Records which draws on more rare and classic dubs taken from the mighty vaults of Studio One Records.
Most of these tracks are taken from Studio One’s superb long out -of-print series of dub albums released between 1974 and 1980 such as Zodiac Sounds, Ital Sounds and System, Roots Dub, Dub Store Special, Juks Incorporation and others. Many of these classic dub albums were originally released only in Jamaica in short-run pressings with special silkscreen printed sleeves, all with striking minimal designs, and which now fetch many, many £100s of pounds.
These tracks, credited to the Dub Specialist, use the original music tracks to seminal Studio One rhythms, which are broken down, reconstructed, and manipulated using the studio mixing desk as an instrument. With these albums producer Clement Dodd and engineer Sylvan Morris helped create some of the finest dubs ever known to man or woman!
The cover shows Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd in orbit, an image inspired by DJ Lone Ranger‘s 1982 ‘Badda Dan Dem’ album for Studio One, the cover of which portrays Sir Coxsone at the controls of a spaceship with the DJ in space.
The tracks on Studio One Space-Age Dub Special are mainly instrumental cuts with occasional snippets of original vocals brought into the mix. Lone Ranger’s complete vocals feature on ‘A Lie Gal A Tell’, a 6min+ superb dubbed out piece of musical madness. Also included is a selection of rare dub versions that only ever appeared on rare singles.

Soul Jazz Records presents
FUNK MASTERS – Love Money
12” Single
5th May 2023
Soul Jazz Records are releasing a new 12" of this huge 1981 disco/jazz-funk dance-floor bomb that has been out of print for over 40 years since its original release!
"There are certain records that 'split the atom', creating a totally new sound – serendipitous moments in time when an artist pulls a rabbit from the hat and forecasts a change ahead." Greg Wilson, DJ Mag
Few records crossed over into different musical worlds as successfully as the Funk Masters' sublime UK disco/jazz-funk monster classic cut 'Love Money'. A monster underground hit in New York - everywhere from Larry Levan's Paradise Garage and David Mancuso's Loft in New York - through to the new wave/no wave dance crowds at Area, Club 57, Danceteria, Limelight and Mudd Club, and artists such as Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat who similarly played the track to death. The track then also became a huge Chicago house club track and a favourite and influence'd everyone from Masters at Work's Louie Vega to Francois Kervorkian with its dubbed-out sound.
Originally released in 1981, the track came out on the flipside over a rap cut to the song by Bo Kool, one of the earliest ex amples of UK rap, but it was the instrumental 'Love Money', with its dubbed out sound effects, that was more often played filling dancefloors everywhere. This nod to reggae and dub was not by chance. The track was produced by longtime UK-resident Jamaican reggae DJ and producer Tony Williams. This was his first attempt at a club track but by using reggae musicians, he created new style blending funk, disco and reggae, years ahead of its time.
So if ever you want to hear a record that encapsulates the world of disc o, funk, proto-house, hip-hop, no wave dance and reggae in one go then this is it!
This is the first release from Soul Jazz Records' delving into the Tony Williams Tania Music and Funk Masters catalogue, which contains a wealth of UK jazz-funk killers!

The intoxicating highlife music known as Edo Funk from Benin City, Nigeria is back. We have unearthed „The Good Samaritans“ first album, one of the most obscure Nigerian album ever recorded. Originally released in 1982 and pressed in a very small edition, this funk experience unlike any other is full of bouncy basslines, raw trance-like grooves and tripped-out psychedelic guitars. This is funk stripped down to its primal essence, driving rhythms mixed with highlife horns and sweet keyboards.

What did you do in 2020 when the coronavirus took over? While many Brooklynites nursed ailing family members and others nursed their first sourdough starters, rapper/producer Pete Miser dusted off an ancient hard drive and went back in time. Quarantining in Upstate New York with no Internet or phone service, Pete found purpose sifting through unreleased recordings of his long-abandoned ten-piece live Hip-Hop band, Five Fingers Of Funk. The surprise result is Portland Say It Again, the first Five Fingers Of Funk album with the original line up since 1998.
“We Were Big In The Nineties” kicks off the project with a bold edit of a live show recording and a shiny new horn arrangement over self deprecating reflections on legacy and middle age in the young man’s game of Hip-Hop. The completion of one new song sparked creative enthusiasm from the entire band. Before long, fresh performances were being laid down in a collaborative frenzy that would yield a combination of repurposed analog recordings from the nineties alongside brand new material, all remotely recorded according to strict social distancing practices.
Album highlights include appearances by certified Northwest Hip-Hop legends Cool Nutz, Jumbo (of the Lifesavas), Bosko, Chillest Illest, and Mic Crenshaw along with true school icons Dres (of Black Sheep) and Jamalski. The songs range from the tongue-in-cheek posturing of “My Mom’s Prius” and “You Already Know”, to a letter for a young black boy in the midst of the George Floyd protests (“Shorty’s Gonna Change The World”), to the title track – a sentimental homage to the Fingers’ hometown, Portland, Oregon. Ever present is the vibrant full band instrumentation that left a lasting mark on live audiences across the country. Portland Say It Again reminds us that the funk may go into quarantine but it never dies.

The new album by Maxine Funke divides into two halves - the first side a perfect suite of the kind of beautifully constructed songs that the New Zealand based artist has become known for, acutely observed vignettes framing her voice with a minimal backing of guitar and organ The second side takes off on a different flight entirely: two dreamy long-form pieces built on a framework of cello, field recordings and delay
“Peer beyond the lo-fi aesthetic and into the lyrics and you’ll find an unmistakably modern stamp on Funke’s writing. Painting domestic scenes with light and airy vocals, she delivers heartfelt lines that pick apart the human condition with ease ” Bleep

YMUSIC
For 15 years, yMusic has developed a reputation as in-demand collaborators with artists ranging from Paul Simon to Dirty Projectors to Caroline Shaw. Now, the genre-fluid chamber group has stepped out as creators in their own right with a self-composed album. The widely influential ensemble has crafted 9 engaging pieces, creating a textured instrumental album that is a vehicle for their renowned virtuosity as well as their exquisite taste.
yMusic has always been innovative — their eye-popping list of collaborators speaks for itself. And yet, this new self-titled album, YMUSIC, is the first time they have braved the spotlight alone, with no composer, no songwriter, no external creative support.
“The urge to write came after spending a significant amount of time on tour performing ‘off the page’ — memorizing, re-writing, and sometimes creating arrangements on-the-fly. During these concert tours, we started working out little ideas together backstage, right before concerts, or in an idle moment of rehearsal. We immediately realized this group was meant to work this way! As six finely-tuned and opinionated musicians, we have literally been training for this our whole lives.”
There is a lot to appreciate on YMUSIC — from the wild intensity of Flood to the noir introspection of Peter Inn, the band’s atmospheric vignettes transport the listener. Yet, it’s in some of the more complex tracks, Three Elephants, Zebras, The Wolf, that we really see these six artists flex their compositional muscles, delivering intricate pieces that are a joy to listen to.
In short, YMUSIC the album stands on its own two feet, finally laying bare the creativity and craft that has always made yMusic the ensemble great.

Delivering angular alt-rock cut through with deep electronic grooves, Cloth are Scottish based twin sibling duo Rachael and Paul Swinton.
Influenced by Cocteau Twins and The XX, Cloth began performing together in 2018. They immersed themselves in the Scottish music scene after moving to Glasgow to study and quickly found themselves playing in local bands and gigging all the usual local spots that a bustling and influential Glasgow scene has to offer. Their debut self-titled album from 2019 was released to critical acclaim making the Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award Shortlist
Following supporting Arab Strap and The Twilight Sad at their sell-out Glasgow shows, Cloth became the latest signing to Mogwai’s legendary label, Rock Action Records (The Twilight Sad, Arab Strap, bdrmm).
‘Secret Measure’ finds Cloth expanding their creative circle for the first time, turning their tried-and-tested insular working process on its head by collaborating with producer Ali Chant (Yard Act, Katy J Pearson, Squirrel Flower).

In the presence of strange, merciful music on a hospital operating table, David Wax’s thoughts turned to 13 songs and the changes they give voice to.
After collapsing during a Thanksgiving-week workout while visiting Thanksgiving-week family, Wax—half of David Wax Museum with wife and bandmate Suz Slezak—was headed for a heart catherization in Columbia, Missouri, his doctors suspecting a heart attack. Hearing the underlying digital drone and ambient soundscapes of hospital machines, he found clarity at a moment with more questions than answers.
Wax hurriedly signed his name to a waiver and had a revelation: “I am sitting there on the stretcher thinking that at least we made You Must Change Your Life, ” he recalls. “Whatever else happens, I feel at peace because this record exists.”
The new record (out May 5 on Nine Mile Records) is a testament to the album as an art form – an openhearted manifesto. It’s the album which sums then transcends bedrock elements of the band’s 15-year recording career combining ancient rhythms of traditional Mexican music with the amber pop hues of AM radio circa 1975, unabashed rock riffs. and the couple’s hallmark interlaced, seductive harmonies. The album humbly beckons listeners to fulfill its title while sounding out a thousand minor- and major-key ways that lives change.

TOKYO POLICE CLUB Elephant Shell
MAY 5TH, 2023
"Too poppy to be post-punk but too clean to be garage-rock, TPC marry bright keyboards and the buoyant voice of singer/bassist Dave Monk into perfect danceable two-minute tunes on their debut album Elephant Shell.” - Rolling Stone
"After the crunchy and dance-hopping 28 minutes nish themselves out, one thing is apparent that the album demands a replay. It’s that good. Tokyo Police Club comes lashing out of the cages with a strong debut and continues their musical journey with another great notch of garage rock indie to add to their catalog." - Consequence of Sound
"The whole shebang clocks in at several minutes shy of half an hour, and it might seem cheap if its brevity wasn’t so full of wit. These songs are as complex as they are short, and they’re riddled with well-conceived zigs and zags." - Slant
On May 5th we are delighted to bring one of the most celebrated albums in our catalog, Tokyo Police Club’s debut album, Elephant Shell . The limited edition vinyl marks fteen years since its original release date.
Tokyo Police Club was formed in 2005 by David Monks (vocals, bass), Josh Hook (guitar), Graham Wright (keyboards), and Greg Alsop (drums) and released Elephant Shell , on April 22nd, 2008. Elephant Shell is the sound of these four early-20-somethings coming into their own after releasing a series of acclaimed EPs, playing hundreds of shows, and delivering on every bit of promise they had shown along the way. The album catapulted the band into the popular consciousness when it debuted at #1 on the Billboard Heatseakers chart, landing the band on the stages of the world’s biggest festivals, a spot in MTV’s video rotation, appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman, and even a cameo on Desperate Housewives. Beyond that, Elephant Shell has stood up as one of the de ning albums of this particular era in indie rock.

“Fremmede Toner” takes its name from a collection of poems by Norwegian author André Bjerke and his translations of the most famous poets in Europe and North America like Nietzsche, Goethe, Swinburne etc. This record is based on some of these poems and the idea to compose music to the Norwegian versions, and then try to mirror these songs using the original poems. The songs are not the same, but in a way similar. Musically, Lumsk continues on the path which earned them international recognition in the past; A unique blend of metal and Nordic folk music bound in rich textures and clever arrangement, this time delivering their most varied and intriguing album to date.
It’s been 16 years since the last album from Norwegian progressive folk band Lumsk last released an album. They began working on this album not long after they released “Det Vilde Kor”, and the first recordings started as early as in 2009. However, life came in the way and since then they’ve been working on “Fremmede Toner” on and off until they finished it in 2022. This is a highly anticipated return and a huge step forward for Lumsk.

OVERVIEW
Short tunes, long tunes, cosmic breaks. Melodies from the West. Spirits from the East. Frode Fivel and the band have kept it going.
These are meritorious musicians from Fredrikstad's music scene, bottled up at Oslo’s Last Train and So What before they turned their noses home. Magnus Abelsen (guitar), Fredrik Brarud (drums), André Helle (bass) and Knut Olsen (keyboards). The band members have backgrounds from Ricochets, Tommy Tokyo and Starving For My Gravy, Navigators, Remington super 60 and more. Frode has also been a creative force in several other band constellations. First, Gothenburg based the indie-pop band Hello Goodbye, and since then Fivel has collaborated with, among others, Knut Schreiner in the band Mirror Lakes.
Frode Fivel is now ready at with a bunch of new songs under his arm! The previous album from 2020 received labels such as harmony pop and cosmic Americana. "Timeless music that remarkably meets the requirements of the particularly interested and at the same time has melodies and qualities that could easily brighten any music radio hour"

MICK THOMAS’ ROVING COMMISSION
New Album Out May 5, 2023
WHERE ONLY MEMORY CAN FIND YOU
The new album Where Only Memory Can Find You by multiple ARIA-winning Australian singer-songwriter Mick Thomas and his current outfit Mick Thomas’ Roving Commission takes him right back to his roots with beloved Oz rock outfit Weddings Parties Anything, the album’s title taken from the chorus of that band’s classic 1987 single ‘Away Away’. Like that song the new album is a beautiful rumination on the nexus between memory and the passing of time, and how you can never go back - no matter how much some people seem hell-bent on revisiting their past. Musically the Roving Commission - who also feature two other WPA alumni as well as members of The Waifs and the backing bands of Aussie luminaries such as Archie Roach, Tex Perkins and David Bridie - ply a distinctive blend of melodic folk-rock that embraces restraint and sophistication in the studio, but definitely know how to bring the party vibes in the live realms with their rollicking stage show. Where Only Memory Can Find You contains co-writes with Oz rock figures such as country icon Sara Storer and members of Indigenous folk outfit Tiddas, including some of the most poignant songs ever penned by Thomas - who in 1993 won the Song Of The Year ARIA for his timeless Oz rock classic ‘Father’s Day’ - with tracks like ‘Back In The Day’, ‘Lilac Trees’, ‘Seven Wonders’ and ‘Calling Me Home’ already up there with the finest moments of his nearly four-decade long career. Few artists seem to genuinely improve with the passing of time but on Where Only Memory Can Find You Mick Thomas is going from strength-tostrength, consolidating his already entrenched reputation as an iconic Australian artist.

—Miles Davis
Remastered by Bernie Grundman from the original tapes
Grammy Lifetime Acheivement Award winner, Clark Terry, remains one of the most revered and decorated artists in jazz history. A featured soloist in the bands of both Duke Ellington and Count Basie, Terry has also recorded with virtually every legend of the genre, including Ella Fitzgerald, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, and Oscar Peterson.
Terry’s incredible talent and temperment found him discovering and mentoring generations of future legends, from Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, and Herbie Hancock to Wynton Marsalis, Dianne Reeves, and 2023 Grammy-winner, Terri Lyne Carrington.
As a sideman and leader, Clark Terry is among the most recorded musicians in history, but most agree that Color Changes is his true masterpiece. The Shapiros -
Gone
By Fall: The Collected Works of The Shapiros
World of Echo LP WOE010LP 5055869549646
RIYL - Sarah Records, K Records, The Cat's Miaow, Black Tambourine, Slumberland. LP limited to 750 copies. World of Echo are pleased to announce the release of Gone By Fall – The Collected Works of The Shapiros, a 12-song compilation by a here today, gone tomorrow pop group formed by Pam Berry (Black Tambourine, The Pines, Glo -worm, Castaway Stones, Belmondo, etc.) and Bart Cummings (The Cat’s Miaow, Hydroplane, Bart & Friends, etc.), while the latter was in Washington, DC in 1994. Tapping into that city’s inspiring independent pop scene, looking for like-minded souls, Berry and Cummings were joined by Scooter, a.k.a. R. Scott Kelly (Veronica Lake, Belmondo, Sabine, etc.), and Trish Roy (Belmondo, Heartworms). The Shapiros may only have existed for a few weeks, during August 1994, but during that brief window of opportunity, the quartet recorded 12 gorgeous po p songs. 9 originals, each a model of concision and restraint, and 3 covers, which gift the listener some of the coordinates to the group’s sound, a meeting point of C86 and the Brill Building Sound: lovely versions of Beat Happening ’s “Cry For A Shadow”, 14 Iced Bears’ “Cut”, and The Shirelles’ “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”. The material was recorded over 3 days at Mulberry Lane, the basement studio of Archie Moore who, at the time of the sessions, was busy as one -fifth of Velocity Girl and released via timehonoured formats for independent pop: 2 7” singles, 1 split single with another Cummings project (Pencil Tin), and a few stray compilation appearances. The band in many ways was driven by Berry, who organised the release of The Shapiros ’ first 2 singles, through the Fantastic and Popfactory labels. This is unsurprising: as co -founder of the long-lasting Chickfactor fanzine, Berry was a significant and supportive presence in independent music in the USA. The songs on The Shapiros are perfectly formed; they’ve no need to say any more than what’s necessary, and this elegance of form lends them a timelessness that, for some, might seem outsize to the brevity of the project’s existence. But great things often happen in passing, capturing the sparks of a situation and the enthusiasms of new and unpredictable encounters. For Cummings, being in Washington was “the most fun I’d had in my life up to that point,” and he’s quick to point out the significance of what had happened in the city in recent times: it was a stronghold for creative independent pop music, with bands like Unrest, Velocity Girl, and Glo -worm, and thrilling pop singles being released at a fierce clip by labels like Teenbeat and the early Slumberland Records. The Shapiros ’ music is a particularly seductive kind of blissful pop. The reverberant chime of a guitar, the subtle sweep of brushes on drums, a gently pulsing bas s guitar, all perfectly played and placed, frame a beautifully unaffected voice, one that ’s understated without being detached. It’s music that understands how small gestures are often the most deeply affecting. And though it may speak quietly at times, it ’s strident and strong; clear and direct. They may have only recorded 12 songs and played 2 gigs (one supporting Lois and The Magnetic Fields, the other Nord Express), but what a body of work to leave behind – diminutive in the best possible way; every second of these twenty-five-or-so minutes of Shapiros magic counts, every moment matters. 10 000 Russos - Live In Berlin
Pressing Info: 180g black vinyl double LP, etched D-side, hand-numbered gatefold sleeve, limited to 500, download card included.. The record captures the band storming through their subterranean motorik psych-drone live at Berlin’s Astra Kulturhaus on October 16th 2021. Recorded whilst out on a European tour, ‘Live In Berlin’ finds 10 000 Russos performing their 2021 ‘Superinertia’ LP in full the album’s five songs expanded and taken to even more transfixing and hedonistic heights in a live setting. These shows were 10 000 Russos’ first with the new, more-electronic line-up and sound, with newly-recruited synth player Nils Meisel making his debut on the ‘Superinertia’ LP and completing the line-up alongside founding members João Pimenta (drums/vocals) and Pedro Pestana (guitar). Across the hour -long set, Pimenta’s deadpan sprechgesang vocal and machine-like percussion, Pestana cascading psych guitarloops and Meisel’s repetitive synth basslines all combine on a performance that will pull you into a trance at times and get you on your feet at others.

Golden Hours - Golden Hours
Pressing Info: 180g clear blue vinyl, printed inner-sleeve. Based between Brussels and Berlin, Golden Hours is comprised of past and present members of Gang Of Four, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Tricky, The Fuzztones and The Third Sound, to name just a few. A band with mileage and stories, they trade in rock ’n’roll missives that are at times dark, tense and hypnotic, at others sweaty, relentless and danceable. Made up of Hákon Adalsteinsson (Guitar/Vocals), Rodrigo Fuentealba Palavacino (Guitar), Tobias Humble (Drums/Vocals) and Wim Janssens (Bass/ Keys/Vocals), Golden Hours’ self-titled debut album is due for release March 31st 2023 on Fuzz Club Records. Wim says of the project and its incoming debut: “The musical backgrounds of each member are pretty broad but somehow when we come together there’s a pretty clear definition of what our music should sound like. There’s a beautiful friction between the noise we produce and the love for melody that seems to overtake at just the right moment. There never seems to be a lack of ideas when we come together. In silent agreement, every idea gets tried and will be further developed into a song or skipped in a heartbeat. No time is wasted. It all happens pretty automatically.” Track List: 1) Come And Find Me 2) Drone Club 3) The Forgotten One 4) Japan On My Mind 5) Run Man Run 6) Calling Me Home 7) Dead On 8) Not Enough 9) Keep On Dreamin'
Tape Runs Out – Floodhead
Trapped Animal LP TAR092V 5055869548397
Tape Runs Out's debut album, Floodhead On 180g , River Green Vinyl, with beautiful matt varnish artwork, strictly limited run of 350 ,. Floodhead is an exploratory sonic journey from the mind and soul of long-time band leader, Liam Goodrum-Bell (guitar, vocals). Tape Runs Out’s experimental sound comes in part from their excellent array of instrumentation - the band members bring violin (Clare Myerscough) and the hammered dulcimer (Ellie Winter), as well as bass (Takeshi Kanemoto) and drums (Laurence Moore). Recorded and produced by Liam and Dan Dawson (band’s guitarist) at Dan’s home studio over the course of a year, the album thrives off experimenting with different textures and sounds, with each song seeking to be its own microcosm of creativity, delivering its unique part within the whole. The painstaking detail and time spent by Liam and Dan between the initial recording session during the summers of 2021 and 2022 has resulted in an incredible production, and one that takes the listener through the Tape Runs Out universe.
