This Issue: Michael Schulman at Slumberland Records
What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?
I think that it’s been the same for our bands as for many others - while there was still strong interest in the music it just wasn’t possible to tour and have that more personal, direct connection with the fans. For small bands and small labels it almost feels *more* important to have that, since we can’t always count on extensive press or radio support.
Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?
How did you personally get started in the music industry?
I’ve been a music fan for as long as I can remember and spent a lot of time during my pre-teen years exploring my parents’ pretty-decent record collection. When I hit my teens I got into punk then post-punk, DIY, indie labels etc and was WAY into record collecting. Early in my college years
I worked at my college radio station (WMUC, at the University of MD, College Park) and made weekly (sometimes daily!) trips to local record shops. This led to what I might consider my first industry job, working in a suburban MD record store called Vinyl Ink.
When and where did the label begin?
When I started at college (1983) there weren’t *that* many people who were into the kind of music that I was, and we all tended to find each other at the radio station, at gigs, at the local record shops. I had a particularly tight posse that I would hang out with, listen to records, go to shows, etc. We were into noise rock sort of stuff (Sonic Youth, Swans, Big Black, Head of David, The Birthday Party, etc) but also DIY/indie pop like Creation label, K, Flying Nun, Postcard and the like.
The Jesus & Mary Chain was a galvanizing influence because they kind of mashed all of that up, which was super exciting to us. After seeing the Mary Chain play in DC in November 1985 a few of us decided to make the jump from just listening to also making music. Most of us had no or very little experience, so we were making an awfully primitive racket. As time went on and our group of friends had coalesced into a few different groups (Whorl, Velocity Girl, Black Tambourine) and started playing shows, we wanted to document what we were doing, so one of us bought a 4-track cassette deck and we all started tinkering with making recordings.
With recordings in hand and being a bunch of vinyl-obsessed goofs, we thought it might be a giggle to make a single. Since what we were doing seemed too weird and primitive to take to other labels, and since some of us worked at stores and sort of knew how distribution worked, we figured we might as well do it ourselves. Slumberland’s first release was a 3 song compilation 7”, which came out in December 1989.
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
A lot of the original SLR crew were into comics and at the time there were some reprints of an early 1900s Sunday comic called Little Nemo In Slumberland coming out. It’s an amazing strip, and the weird psychedelic nature of it appealed. Slumberland Records it was.
How has the label changed since it started?
It’s been over 30 years so there’s been a LOT of change - moving to the west coast, going through periods of varied levels of activity, rolling with it when certain records have taken off well beyond our expectations. In some ways the biggest change came early - the decision to go outside our group of friends and start putting records out by other people. That move transitioned the label from being a vanity project to being more of a *real* label, and I’m still reckoning with that decision 30 years later!
Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. When we first started the label was a collective effort of that original group of friends that comprised the first batch of bands. We all pitched in to stuff records in sleeves, pack orders, etc. After a few years more and more of the work wound up in my hands – partially because I was willing to do it, and because the stock was at the house I lived in and also because some of the other folks were in a band that was becoming more popular and keeping them on the road touring. When I moved to California the label came with me, and since then it’s been a one-person show, spiced up by the occasional intern or record stuffing party with friends.
When we started the label we definitely focused on the DC-area bands that started the label and the small scene that grew up around/with them, like Lorelei, The Ropers, Lilys, etc.
After we moved to California we started working with Bay Area/Sacramento/north bay bands like Henry’s Dress, Rocketship, The Aislers Set and The Softies. In the last several years we’ve released a lot of records by Bay Area bands, like The Reds, Pinks & Purples, The Umbrellas, Kids On A Crime Spree, Artsick, Lunchbox and more. I’ve never thought of Slumberland as locals-only label but I do like working with bands that you can hang out with and go see play live a lot. It’s just fun that way!
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
I reckon that most people would think of Slumberland as an indiepop label, and while we certainly (and unashamedly!) have put out a lot of indiepop records, I’d like to think we cover a lot more territory than that, though all under the general banner of indie guitar pop/rock.
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?
I don’t think the goals have really changed all that much. I just want to release records that I like that fit into this ongoing narrative that we’ve developed. I don’t have any illusions about growing the label; my goal is to help bands get their music heard and whatever success follows that is sort of incidental.
What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?
I wouldn’t exactly call it wild, but we did do subway stations ads for Weekend’s Jinx ‘cause we got a great deal on them. I have no idea how effective they were but they sure looked cool!
Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs??
Just as we never stopped pressing vinyl, even in the dark days of the early and mid 00s, we also never stopped making CDs and will continue to do so as long as people want them. We have started making cassettes for some releases – it’s nice to have a format that we can economically make in small numbers and that doesn’t take a year to manufacture!
How would you describe the average fan of the label?
I think the typical SLR fan is an explorer, someone who does their own digging and doesn’t wait for the press to tell them what’s up. They’re fans of good songwriting and put more value on tunes than whether a band is cool or being talked about. And obviously they have exquisite taste!
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
That would have to be the advent and growth of digital music, from the early years of file sharing to the near-collapse of record retail to the brief bounce of digital sales and now to what might be the end-game of streaming. While I welcome the democratizing nature of digital music, its ubiquity does make it harder and harder to sell records, and I think in some ways trivializes the art itself, commodifying and devaluing it.
If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards?
I used to co-operate a side label that specialized in leftfield electronic/dance records, and if I started another side or sub-label it would probably also be in that area, and/or new jazz.

claire rousay’s music zeroes in on personal emotions and the minutiae of everyday life - voicemails, haptics, environmental recordings, stopwatches, whispers and conversations - exploding their significance. a softer focus is her breakout album: a pop-inflected collaboration with artist and ceramicist Dani Toral that quickly won praise from the New York Times, Pitchfork, The Wire and more.... and quickly sold out. At last, American Dreams presents its longawaited reissue. Don’t delay.

Recorded entirely in 2021, Perfect Worlds, the newest album by San Francisco's mysterious lo-fi pop legend Tony Jay, delivers an intimate record of thirteen dreamy, assured arrangements that further cements Tony Jay's status as a dejected crooner of the quotidian par excellence. Drawing inspiration from failed relationships, lack of sleep, a bicycle injury, and depression, Tony Jay (headed by Flowertown/Sad Eyed Beatniks member and SF scene mainstay Michael Ramos) pairs catchy melodies and hushed vocals with ethereal instrumental tracks.
Studded with instant classics, Tony Jay's new album encapsulates the isolation and loneliness of the past few years. "In a perfect world I'd find a place down in the basement," begins the title track, and the refrain repeats, "You just can't escape it." Interspersed with otherworldly instrumental tracks that call to mind a machine struggling to work underwater and whale mating calls combined with droning synth, horns, chimes, this album also provides space for listeners to make new worlds of their own. Our times may be inescapable, but we're fortunate to be able to wall ourselves in with fantasies of our own creation alongside "Perfect Worlds."

1994 brought their self-titled sixth album The Cult, sometimes also known as the “Black Sheep” album due to the cover image. Recorded again with Bob Rock, It is a very personal album with a lot of the narrative subject matter referring to Astbury’s younger years. Unlike their previous albums, this one revealed itself more slowly with each listen. This album is considered an overlooked and underrated gem and preceded their 1995 break-up.
The band reformed in 1999 and continues to tour and release albums, including their most recent, 2022’s Under The Midnight Sun.

Highly anticipated would be an understatement; since their inception Overmono have purposefully cultivated a fanbase that heralds them as one of the UK’s most original contemporary live electronic acts. Since then, Overmono have been named ‘Best Live Act’ at the prestigious DJ Mag Best of British Awards, taken their custom audio-visual live show to the most credible festivals across the globe, including Glastonbury, Movement Festival, Dekmantel, and produced innovative releases including their instalment of their ‘Fabric Presents’ DJ mix series and collaborations with Joy Orbison. OVERVIEW
James Ellis Ford (Simian Mobile Disco & The Last Shadow Puppets) has been hidden in plain sight for his entire two-decade-long career. The composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter has worked with some of the biggest names in music, from Arctic Monkeys to Depeche Mode via Foals, Gorillaz and Kylie Minogue, but has always dedicated himself to the success of these projects almost to the point of self-erasure.
He alone has crafted one of the most bewitching and persuasive albums of 2023. The ten tracks are as much homage to the tender and eccentric English pop music of Brian Eno and Robert Wyatt as it is love letter to his wife and son’s Palestinian roots. With The Hum, James Ellis Ford has finally come out of hiding.

Flowers At Your Feet, the debut solo album from Rahill, is available on olive green color 1LP with artworked insert. The album includes a collaboration with Beck.

After the pandemic hit, and the people of the world suddenly grew wary and suspicious of one another, Iguana Death Cult, one of Europe’s most exciting rock exports, became more than just a band to its members—it became therapy. “I think for the first ten times we went to jam,” says guitarist/vocalist Tobias Opschoor, speaking about the process of making the new album Echo Palace, “we just drank wine and talked about it, and just kept on talking for hours—and then were like, ‘OK, I have to go because I have to work tomorrow.’”
Taking place at frontman Jeroen Reek’s apartment in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, these gatherings slowly shifted from talking about this surreal chapter of their lives—the days of quiet streets and cramped buildings—to making music about it. “I was living in a really crappy, leaky, ready-for-demolition apartment,” explains Reek, “with just one heat source—like a really old-school, gas stove kind of thing.” Working on cold nights, they had to gather around that heater together—a cozy approach that ultimately got their creative flow going, fast.
Armed with the talents of Justin Boer on bass and Arjen van Opstal on drums, and tapping the keys work Jimmy de Kok for the first time on album, the band took their trademark melodic garage-rock style and expanded it out to make it vibier and looser, with each member contributing ideas to develop the sound palette in full. “We all get into this sort of blender and then everybody gives a little bit of a flavor to it,” says Opschoor.
The sounds they started to make tapped into the band’s acerbic bite established on their first two LPs, 2017’s The First Stirrings of Hideous Insect Life and 2019’s Nude Casino—albums that sometimes felt like Parquet Courts colliding with Super Furry Animals. (Paste described Nude Casino as evoking “the colorful mischief of nights out where even a humdrum accountant can feel like a Clint Eastwood desperado.”) Their explosive performances of these records turned them into a cult live act among psych fans, who have thrashed to the band everywhere from Amsterdam to Austin. (It was during a particularly bananas set at SXSW that the band won over Innovative Leisure.) But working on this new album, huddled together as the world split apart, everything began to flutter like Remain in Light.
Echo Palace may be the Iguana Death Cult music that’s most overtly about the strange cause and effect of groupthink, but the theme has been lurking there since the very beginning, when the band was first formed by childhood friends Reek and Opschoor over ten years ago. The name of Iguana Death Cult is a partial nod to Reek’s fascination with cults in general—and the “Iguana” part is a nod to Iggy Pop, whose first band was the Iguanas. Watching the pandemic paranoia and conspiracy theories steeping across their country, Reek wrote lyrics reflecting the scene in front of him: “Purple, veiny soccer mommies,” he sings in a deep, foreboding voice on the song “Echo Palace,” “Sharpening their guillotines.” It’s a cut so infectious that it betrays the density of its lyrics, which were adapted from a poem Reek wrote about the repercussions of “shutting yourself off from everyone outside of your own ideology.”
When it came time to record the full set, the band headed to PAF Studio in Rotterdam, and then had the self-produced album subsequently mixed by Joo-Joo Ashworth (Sasami, Dummy) at Studio 22 in Los Angeles and mastered by Dave
Cooley (Tame Impala, Yves Tumor). As the instruments swirl and trade solos on “I Just a Want House,” a funky millennial nihilist anthem, you can practically hear the growth of a group that’s been pushing itself further and further with every tour and every Belgian-stove fuelled jam session. The album is a big swing, stretching Iguana Death Cult beyond its garage rock origins and taking them to a new realm. It’s the type of project that warranted having legendary Dutch saxophonist Benjamin Herman stop by to add to the squall on tracks like “Oh No” and “Sensory Overload,” heady thrashers that morph into calculated freakouts; that warranted Reek and Opschoor knowing when screaming their guts out on tracks like “Pushermen,” and Boer and van Opstal knowing when to bring the rhythm section to a jazzy simmer on tracks like “Paper Straws.”
The end result of Echo Palace is an appropriately worldly album from a group breaking past the confines of its home country. That’s not to say that Iguana Death Cult aren’t proudly Dutch; the group takes from the trademark hard work ethic of their Rotterdam base and applies it to their approach with music. But it’s 2022, and we’re less defined by our borders than ever before. “When we play in other countries, for me that gives the same amount of pleasure—or even more—than when we play in the Netherlands,” says Opschoor.
“We’re not just little countries anymore, everything is global,” adds Reek, speaking about society at large—but he might as well be speaking about Iguana Death Cult itself. “We’re turning into a global thing.”
"Dutch band Iguana Death Cult's rip-roaring melodies are built to jettison far beyond their homebase of Rotterdam." - FADER
"Frenetic, intense sonic assaults, they turn psych punk into astonishingly concise three-dimensional documents." - CLASH
"Jangly, angular guitars fight for space in the track with a bobbing bassline holding it all in together...This jam would fit on your playlists with Parquet Courts, Ty Segall or Television and is a catchy starting point to get a feel for their well-executed blend of rock and roll fringe." - KCRW
"With a carousel of outlandish and frisky guitar tones, Iguana Death Cult curate something absurd and sportive, yet illuminating."- Paste

A simple declaration of peace and reality shouldn’t ignite a movement, but when it does, it’s good to have a photographer around.
And so it was, in April of 1966, when three patrons of NYC’s Julius’ bar stated: “We are homosexuals. We are orderly, we intend to remain orderly, and we are asking for service." Today, the photo of this moment hangs on the wall of Julius’. Today, gay bars in NYC are not only legal, but plentiful, thanks to the artistic tradition of telling the truth about a time and a place.
Singer-songwriter Seán Barna, a viscerally outspoken queer artist and performer, is embedded in this tradition. With his second LP and Kill Rock Stars debut, Seán invites you to An Evening at Macri Park—a character study of the dimly-lit Brooklyn queer bar, Macri Park, and the creatures who thrive within its walls.
Seán was a semi-professional drummer by age fourteen and graduated with a degree in classical percussion at age twenty-two. Barna has since served as the drummer of Deaf West Theatre’s Los Angeles production of Spring Awakening and the national Broadway tour for The Producers. Living in Berlin in 2011, as a regular at an English-speaking open mic at the now-closed Neukölln bar, Lagari, Seán began to explore his voice as a songwriter.
Recorded at 1809 Studios in Macedon, NY, Seán would write late into the night as producer Dave Drago and his young children slept. Early in the morning, they would record the previous evening’s riches. Moving fast, the bar Macri Park became the center of a song cycle documenting giddiness, grief, history, and everything in-between. He enlisted friends, including Counting Crows’ Adam Duritz and David Immerglück, harpist and songwriter Mikaela Davis, Danielle Ponder, and Maria Taylor of Azure Rae, to bring this world to life.

Bringing together ambient music, impressionism, sound poetry, and jazz, Dog Dreams is a rumination on the doublesidedness of trauma and love, on how one does not undercut the other, but are rather interlocked in an affective dialectic. Although its name comes from the literal translation of the Korean term “개꿈”—which could mean anything from fanciful daydreams to nightmarish terrors, but always alluding to the idea that they are nonsensical, unrealistic, or simply silly—Lucy Liyou’s sophomore album instead takes seriously these questions of why we dream what we dream, what slumber offers us that sober reality fails to, and which forgotten desires dare only emerge as our bodies go to rest.

Already a multi award-winning and established artist, with a growing global reputation, South African artist Bokani Dyer presents his newest record ‘Radio Secheba’ - due for release on digital, CD & 12” vinyl formats on 12th May 2023 via Brownswood Recordings.
This 15-track album continues Dyer’s creative journey of making rich and immersive music which places him amongst the new wave of South African jazz artists, including the likes of Siya Makuzeni and Nduduzo Makhathini.
‘Radio Sechaba’ provides an intimate view into South Africa’s multifaceted people - and an opportunity for global connection through music. The meaning behind ‘Sechaba’ in the album title is nation. The record hones into the related topics of nation-building and unity and this is no ordinary topic for Dyer, who was born into a Botswanan community in exile from apartheid. The title of this thought-provoking album echoes that of “Radio Freedom”the voice in exile of the African National Congress.

RP Boo's essential first album, 2013's ‘Legacy’ caused a storm of acclaim worldwide as people finally started to piece together his true place in Footwork and the powerful legacy of his work as an innovator. In parallel with productions, his always on-point DJ sets have lit up festivals and clubs worldwide and continue to do so to this day, notably leading to him being named one of the ‘100 World’s Best DJs’ in a recent book by DJ Mag.
Now ‘Legacy Vol.2’ continues his story. Featuring tracks created between 2002 and 2007, this is a wonderous selection of material, some known, some unknown. The album kicks off with the dark and epic ‘Eraser’ created in September 2007, during a time RP was going to underground Footwork club War Zone on the west side of Chicago. The track was inspired by, and created to fuel, the “taunting words of intimidation” between dancers.” And now it makes for one intense album opener.
Some cuts have simple sources – for example ‘Total Darkness’ from 2004 was inspired by, and made in tribute to the Footwork dance troupe of the same name. Some tracks are inspired by movies, for example ‘Heavy Heat’ was inspired by Full Metal Jacket and ‘Say Grace’ by ‘Colors.’

Side B:
Flo-Control
Under’D-Stat
Say Grace
Knock Out
Side C:

Side D:

Last Night
Some cuts are inspired by everyday life – take for example 2005's ‘Pop Machine’, which was inspired by the time he was working at Speedway Oil Change who had a temperamental soda/pop machine. One day, a customer put money in the machine and nothing came out, so he continued to press the button, and for some reason RP found this funny so he went over to the machine and started pressing the buttons himself and everyone he touched started saying “Work!.” Inspired once he was back home in his studio he made ‘Pop Machine’ in tribute to the defunct machinery. When he came back to work the next day and played the track for all this co-workers it blew their minds and they also laughed with at how creative RP could get using things from his everyday life as inspiration. ‘Pop Machine’ also illustrates how RP’s Footwork uses repetition and minimalism as fuel.
Looking back on the period in which these cuts were made RP Boo recalls “The Footwork scene was very scattered around. (There were) very few places to see Footworkers showcase their moves. Then around 2005, things stated to change when the War Zone created By Wala (Jerome Williams) on the West Side of Chicago gave a platform for the dancers to come and do what they do best. Then, Battle Grounds surfaced on the South Side of Chicago where you would hear the future of footwork tracks being played by DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn.”
Years later RP Boo is still inspired by Foot Work – the art of dancing and working for dancers. He continues to shake up clubs and isn’t afraid to get out from behind the decks and drop some Foot himself. We’ll let the man himself have the final word - “What inspires me to keep going is seeing the people having an awesome time moving on the dance floor, as well as playing music that is a recognizable part of my life. I’m one with it.”

New from Strut, a fresh reissue of the classic debut album Try And Love from one of Nigeria’s most celebrated Afro-rock bands, Ofege.
Formed by guitarist Melvin Ukachi and bassist Paul Alade while young students at St Gregory’s school in Lagos, Ofege first found their feet borrowing instruments and supporting school band The Groove Makers. Discovering drummer M-ike Meme by chance at a school dance and adding Dapo Olumide on keys and Felix Inneh on rhythm guitar, they met EMI’s resident producer / A&R man, Odion Iruoje who promptly auditioned them. Sneaking them out of school to record their first sessions (Ofege literally means “breaking bounds”), Iruoje honed the band into a tighter unit and their debut album Try And Love was recorded at EMI’s Studios in 1972. “Odion was like a Sergeant Major, explains Ukachi “He drilled us for the whole day until we became tight.”
The album caught the imagination of a young Nigerian crowd fascinated by the new teen band and Ofege joined a fresh wave of homegrown artists coming through in the wake of Fela’s towering influence and other Afro-rock bands like Monomono, Ofo The Black Company and Blo (Blo’s Berkley Jones contributed wild guitar solos to this album and continued working with the band).
Try And Love mixed driving Afro-funk and rock tracks like the instrumental ‘Gbe Mi Lo’ and ‘Whizzy Llabo’ about a fellow student with hair like a wizard. Ukachi also contributed ballads including the title track and ‘It’s Not Easy’, most recently featured in TV series What We Do In The Shadows.

Trace is a masterclass in sound design. Alison Chesley’s formidable skill as a cellist and composer ground the compositions with rich organic sounds of cello and bow. Chesley and Thomas’s unique voices as composers remain discernable and present throughout the album, but Trace is a celebration of connection of collaboration with an acute sense of details and the power they convey. On Trace, the duo utilize timbre, tone and dynamics as essential tools in crafting stunning emotive narratives. Together, the duo wield sound with inquisitive aplomb, burrowing into each other’s sonic aesthetics and unearthing irrefutable beauty. Chesley is an unparalleled cellist and composer who has been making boundaryless music for nearly three decades under the moniker Helen Money. Markus Popp is endlessly curious and his music as Oval is delightfully inventive. Since pioneering albums in the 90s systemisch and 94diskont., Oval has continually excavated new spaces in electronic music, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape. New album Romantiq finds Popp delivering his most light and delicate tones to date. Like the plucking of harp strings, Popp’s organic and playful approach to sound is warm and bright. Oval continually, confounds with his ability to conjure such lithe, evocative sonics from software.
Romantiq evolved from an audio-visual collaboration with digital artist Robert Seidel for the grand opening of the German Romantic Museum, where a huge outdoor projection covered the museum building. Popp sought a more expansive definition of the romantic, conjuring flickering images that glitch, evolve and collapse in on one another – opulent neo-chamber music lit by the paradoxically heartwarming screen glow of social media flirtations. Popp crafted dozens of short vignettes that each sought to evoke a specific mood or emotion. Processed period instruments trace luxuriant spaces that shift from low-lit chambers to glistening palatial grandeur, glitching through past, present and future. Swelling atmospheres emerge like perfume, rich scents flooding the senses before evaporating on the breeze. Romantiq’s musical oxytocin is made from ancient instruments processed and edited by a modern electronic master with the utmost deftness and delicacy.

2023 marks the twenty-eighth year of Suarasama; it is also the first year for this reissue of their 2013 masterpiece, Timeline.
Irwansyah Harahap and Rithaony Hutajulu , Ethnomusicology lecturers at University of Sumatera Utara, founded Suarasama in 1995 after graduating from the University of Washington Ethnomusicology program. Their music, as expressed on both Timeline and Fajar Di Atas Awan (first issued in 1998, reissued by Drag City in 2008) is hypnotic and joyful; progressing ancient North Sumatran music concepts while referencing the music of adjacent ethnic traditions. “Dukkha,” for example, was written combining Mandailing and Eastern European musical inspirations. Playing this song on African jembe, Indian sruti box and a European lute known as the mandolin, Suarasama instigate a musical synesthesia in the listener that may honestly earn and truly deserve the title of “world music.”
Throughout Timeline, this is largely due to Irwansyah Harahap’s master playing on a variety of stringed instruments including acoustic guitars, Malaysian gambus, mandolin, and an invention of his own design, the saz-guitar. Suarasama’s spirit and intention is further elevated by Rithaony Hutajulu’s vocals, as well as the skilled rhythm playing of Muhammad Amin and Horas Panjaitan, with additional percussion and singing from several others. The sound of Suarasama is the sound of people engaged in a deeply spiritual, constantly moving recital in open space.
Suarasama’s conception of Timeline was a multifaceted one from the start. It grew from the concept of hemiola , a metric rhythmic structure involving the juxtaposition of a 2-beat time signature upon 3-beat time within the same line. The song “Timeline” itself addresses the history of musical lutes around the world as a means of debuting their custom-made lute, the aforementioned saz-guitar. Finally and perhaps most significantly, a “timeline” charts the passage of time, and therefore references Suarasama’s musical path over the years of their existence.

This is especially significant since founder and leader Irwansyah Harahap passed away in 2021 at the age of 60. As difficult as this loss is for his family, friends and fans alike, the reissue of Timeline is seen as a celebration of the vitality and importance of his music career and journey. As a professor, he taught his students about the qualities of North Sumatran traditional music and their relationship to other traditional musics of the world; with the music of Suarasama , he demonstrated the same to listeners across the planet. He worked to preserve the music and the instruments as well, such as the traditional Sumatran taganing, a five-piece set of tuned drums, and hasapi, a lute of the Toba Batak people of North Sumatra. After Irwansyah ’s passing, Ritha’s daughter Niesya said that he had always wanted their music studio Rumah Musik Suarasama, in Simpang Selayang, Medan Tuntungan, North Sumatra, to be a center for music preservation. This dedication to the music was acknowledged in his lifetime through several awards and fellowships around the world, including a recognition from the Ministry of Culture and Education of Indonesia as the pioneer of the World Music genre in Indonesia.
Suarasama mourn the loss of their leader, Irwansyah Harahap, and grieve his passing. They intend to continue his legacy and spread his music to the world. As shall we – with the eternally resonant music of Timeline, crossing as many borders as possible, to bring Suarasama’s world music to all the people, everywhere.

SNIFFANY AND THE NITS
THE UNSCRATCHABLE ITCH
Limited edition khaki vinyl version
STREET DATE: 12 May 2023
"The UK's greatest and grossest new band" Creem “This album will end up being one of the best underground British punk LPs of the year" Steve Lamacq, 6 Music
Sniffany & The Nits are a deranged, genuinely troubling punk band from London featuring members of Joanna Gruesome, Ex -Void & The Tubs. A new limited edition khaki vinyl version of their 2022 debut album The Unscratchable Itch will be released on 17 March 2023. Via PRAH Recordings.
Drawing a through line between the British post -punk of The Fall and the new wave of insolent hardcore typified by bands like Lumpy & The Dumpers, The Nits have developed a knack for writing unhinged punk earworms.

But it’s Sister Sniffany, and her singular lyrical and performance style, who elevates the band beyond the sum of their influences. Her lyrics inhabit the same world as her ‘macabre, visceral’ (It’s Nice That’) cartoons- a world of hidden humiliations, girl abjection, crumpled lager cans, clam chowder and lumpy, over-stuffed dollies. Over the course of The Unscratchable Itch, Sniffany ventriloqui ses a cast of pathetic, unbalanced characters: A secretarial administer tails her Casanova husband to a suburban swingers party: "I can smell him from here: a mix of vaseline, foot cream and Stella beer". A poor old grandmother's glasses fog up as she chastises her granddaughter: "You self -entitled selfish little twat! / Left me to die in a popcorn -walled flat! / Spotty little smelly little prick! / Making your poor grandmother sick!"
But these characters aren’t detached, impersonal creations. As Sniffany explains: “In Sniffany & The Nits I like to exorcise and exhibit the deeply shameful parts of myself that I see as the toxic aspects of my own femininity.” These are confessional songs about love addiction, jealousy, possession, self-loathing and “egg smashing-fury”. Though occasionally they are literally just about Sex & The City, red -pilled incels or grandmothers.
O Williams (Drums), Max ‘Wozza’ Warren (Bass) and Matt Green (Guitar) have been entrenched in the UK DIY scene for years, having played in the aforementioned bands, as well as countless others. Warren also runs the influential left-field label Gob Nation- a home for ‘egg punks’ across the country. As such, the band veer between atonal nowave guitar assault, straight-up hardcore, goth/anarcho or whatever takes their fancy, while remaining identifiably Nit -like. Always grounded by a pounding, pogo-ing rhythm section, The Nits provide the perfect backdrop for Sister Sniffany’s wild, relentless live performances.

Title: PREDATOR ROMANTIC
Label: APOLLON RECORDS
Genre: Slutwave / snuff pop
OVERVIEW
The absolutely legendary slutwave / snuff pop album from LA underground icon Actually Huizenga, for the first time on CD and Vinyl!
Described by Kaltblut Magazine as “something like a blend of 80s Madonna, Marilyn Manson, Annie Lennox and Wednesday Addams, all nicely rounded up into 13 tracks”, this album is a really unique blend of everything and more!
Predator Romantic (released digitally in 2015) was the 2nd and last Actually studio album, before she formed the more industrial band Patriarchy. It contains the songs from her two pretty outrageous films “Heavenly Sin” and “Viking Angel” – watch them if you dare ;)

Elephant Gym - Underwater
Info:
On Underwater, Elephant Gym’s second full-length, there was no single composer overseeing the record To the end of unlocking new sounds for themselves, each member took turns leading production and compositional roles during the creation of the album The result is an expansive cohesion of diverse songs which ow in and out of one another like water Vocal cameos by international collaborators provide another compelling dimension to the record, emboldening a group usually known for their instrumental compositions
The band explains that “Underwater is an idea about a kind of private, mysterious space ” It’s a place where one may go to ponder or concentrate, to clear one’s head, or to just blow off some steam in solitude So, too, is Underwater fundamentally about immersion: immersion in the chaos of feeling, living in the throes of being human-sized in the in nite expanse of existence Elephant Gym deftly weaves this universal concept into their signature sound without ever pulling you out of your personal space, leaving you to yourself underwater

"Elephant Gym’s math rock has the same spellbinding qualities as fractals or quantum mechanics No matter how knotty the time signature, their dazzling interplay of guitar, bass, and drums conveys a sense of wonder "
-Pitchfork
"The rhythms and time signatures are complex and constantly changing, their music is primarily instrumental, and everyone in the band absolutely plays the hell out of their instrument They’re adventurous with their structures and textures, and their most recent album, Underwater, dives into a world with constantly shifting borders, anchored by the band’s singular vision "

No Vacation - Phasing
Info:
Phasing is the latest collection of songs from the wavy-gravy dream-pop group No Vacation, comprised of ve tracks that laconically capture the band’s evolution and compositional acumen While some cuts took only a couple months to complete, others had years-long gestation periods, showing the band’s awareness that patience can be a powerful artistic tool The collaborative writing process on Phasing further demonstrates No Vacation’s growth, wherein each member made contributions outside of their primary instrument Emboldened by this experimentation, each title on Phasing features a distinct structural turn, either breaking up a song entirely in half, or deftly transitioning to an unexpected mood or phrase The result is an instrumentally dynamic, multigenre foray that calls on the sounds of shoegaze and 90s alternative rock, even boasting string arrangements which hearken back to the Romantic Era
