The album charts the rise of underground punk and post-punk in the UK from 1977-81. This album is fully remastered and relicensed and includes five new tracks from 23 Skidoo, Notsensibles, Pretty Boy Floyd, The Astronauts and The Impossible Dreamers.

The album is a collection of seminal, classic, obscure and rare punk and post-punk singles from the likes of The Mekons, Johnny Moped, The Killjoys, The Rings and many more which all chart the rise of independent music and Do It Yourself culture that exploded in the wake of punk and during the years of Britain under Margaret Thatcher.

Following the original, digital only, release of Goat’s score for ‘The Gallows Pole’ TV series, we are now thrilled to announce an expanded, ltd edition vinyl version ‘The Gallows Pole’ is a three-part Element Pictures production, written and directed by Shane Meadows which was aired in the UK on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.

This new vinyl version of the ‘The Gallows Pole: Original Score’ differs from the previous digital release as it now only features the music which was specifically written for the series itself – it doesn’t include the three, previously released back catalogue tracks. Instead, this vinyl edition contains three ‘unused/unreleased’ tracks: ‘Goat Witch’, ‘Timeless Awareness’ and ‘Kampsång (Instrumental)’. These tracks have not, up-to-now, been heard by anyone apart from Shane Meadows himself. The themes and imagery of Benjamin Myers’ source novel are the perfect fit for Goat’s mystical, pagan aesthetic. The story, based in rural 18th century Yorkshire, tells a fictionalised, psychedelic tale based on the true story of David Hartley and the Cragg Vale Coiners, which became the biggest fraud in British history. Rather than 'writing to picture' in the traditional way, Goat approached the creative process differently, explaining: “In the beginning, we would get inspiration just through reading the book, trying to get a sense of its vibration and then translate that into music, with passages from the book as a springboard for the initial jams.”

Goat were already fans of Meadows’ work, in particular ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’ and the various iterations of ‘This Is England’, and understood the importance of music to him, noting that: “Music is a central part to everything Shane has created” and describing the opportunity as a “blessing” when they were approached about the project. Working on the score for ‘The Gallows Pole’ also provided an ongoing inspiration for Goat, resulting in the germs of music that formed the bands most recent album, the critically acclaimed ‘Medicine’.

‘The Gallows Pole: Original Score’ is ltd to only 3,000 copies worldwide – the package comes as a colour vinyl LP + 7” and is housed in a special gatefold sleeve.

Stones Throw Records has pressed an Apple Juice color variant to commemorate one of the label’s earliest release; Charizma’s 2003 hiphop classic Big Shots.

A lifetime has passed since the murder of Bay Area emcee Charles "Charizma" Hicks who passed in December of 1993 at the age of 20. Despite his short life, Charizma made an impression on everyone he encountered. Charizma's death deeply impacted his close friend and hip hop production partner Chris "Peanut Butter Wolf" Manak, who at the time stopped making music (and everything else) for several months after receiving the news. Ultimately, however, it was Charizma's murder that gave PB Wolf the impetus to carry on and get their music heard by the world – setting up his own record label to do so. In 1996, Wolf founded Stones Throw Records and put out the first release, a Charizma/PB Wolf 12" single called "My World Premiere."

With this posthumous release, hip-hop fans can only speculate what heights might have been reached if Charizma might have reached if he was still here today.

Originally created and released in a small edition in Japan back in 1987 by the mysterious musician/magician Shiho.

The Body is a Message of the Universe features floating shimmering synthesizer textures. It’s unique and extra ordinarily serene with shifting tone colors and spatial textures bringing the listener to a special magic place. It’s as beautiful as it’s captivating. There’s also a haunting edge to parts of the album sounding like what could originally have influenced David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti when they composed the soundtrack to the original Twin Peaks series.

This release also features a couple of special tracks originally composed and recorded by Shiho in the late 1980s for the Japanese Kanebo Beauty Research Laboratory.

Although Shiho Yabuki continued her career in Japan, both as a musician and magician and became a pioneer of healing music in Asia, for most western listeners it was like Shiho was one of those mysterious artists who puts out an album and then is never heard from again. This is unfortunate, and something Subliminal Sounds hope to rectify.

Old Man Luedecke is the recording name of two-time JUNO award winning and Polaris Prize nominated singer-songwriter Chris Luedecke. With her third Gondwana album, ‘Constellation’, Manchester’s Caoilfhionn Rose has come of age as an artist, digging deep to find experimental new ways of expressing her wonder at nature’s beauty, her love of music in all its diversity, and her belief in the restorative powers that both afford in the troubled post-COVID world.

Vigorous, searching and ever-curious, Caoilfhionn (say ‘Keelin’) has found a voice at once ancient and modern, intrepidly exploring contemporary technology to transform traditional songcraft for the mid2020’s.

The ten tracks on ‘Constellation’ feel rooted in a knowledge of folk, jazz and all the twentieth century’s classic tunesmiths, and yet they seem to create a magical, otherworldly space of her own imagining, blending Caoilfhionn’s core piano with synths, and pitting a live rhythm section and saxophone embellishments against ambient samples and future-facing production techniques.

Confident, exploratory and often jaw-droppingly sublime, this incredible album properly announces Caoilfhionn Rose’s arrival as a fresh creative force for 2024.

Caoilfhionn has always pursued music with a fierce commitment. When a period of illness in her late teens caused a delay in starting a Music degree at Newcastle University she used the time constructively. She took a diploma in Music Production and Audio Engineering at Manchester MIDI School (Now School of Electronic Music), which leant heavily towards electronic music, imbuing her with a progressive outlook towards sound manipulation. Later studying music at university in Newcastle, she’d make sound experiments and field recordings, posting tracks online under the alias Audrey Daydreamer, and eventually an EP, under her own name. That was how I got involved with Gondwana,” she explains, “because Matthew [Halsall, label boss] heard the EP, and he came to see me play at a café called The Art of Tea, and asked if I’d like to record for Gondwana.”

‘Constellation’ features contributions from Halsall’s rhythm section, drummer Alan Taylor and bassist Gavin Barras, as well as Jordan Smart from Mammal Hands, whose supple sax exquisitely colours the fringes of most of its songs. Also guesting: John Ellis, former member of The Cinematic Orchestra, beatifically tinkling the ivories at the end of ‘Fall Into Place’, and producer Aaron Wood via a raft of ambient samples adding textured loveliness throughout ‘Rainfall’ “I love being open to collaboration,” Rose enthuses, “and the record’s a collage, knitting together all these influences, sounds and players, and just really going for it with the experimentation in the production.”

Constellation’ sees her broaden the range of her singing, from the pure natural expression of her earlier records, to using it more as an instrument, sometimes more as abstract sound than as conventional verbal delivery. “It’s all playful and experimental,” she summarizes, “seeing what we could come up with that’s imaginative.” And she has learnt to use “her artistic license just to let the words be as they are”, to write in a momentary, impressionistic, almost painterly way. One example was how the word ‘constellation’ just fell into her head – “like, out of the cosmos” – while recording that song, so in it went. It also seemed emblematic of many aspects of the album – the theme of connectedness, her little cluster of Gondwana family musicians, and a pervasive feel of stargazing awe in the music. It obviously made a fitting album title, too.

And so, Caoilfhionn Rose’s collage of differing influences and inspirations, players and processes, cohered into a miraculous and quietly powerful body of work, which stands as a testament to artistic adventure, to both improvisation and hard work, to trusting our connection to nature, other people and music itself. As such, ‘Constellation’ surely deserves to put her on a much bigger stage by the year’s end.

Bill MacKay and Drag City are delirious with pride to announce the discovery of a new territory: Locust Land, a record which seeks to reflect the nerve-shredding consciousness run amok in our world today — and somehow allay it with sound. Bill ’s music is a visceral crackling where it meets the air, and Locust Land can’t help but reflect its era more than any other in his discography.

It’s been five years since the release of Fountain Fire — but in the interim, Bill has barely stopped moving, collaborating with artists across the spectrum, including cellist Katinka Kleijn, banjo player Nathan Bowles and keyboardist Cooper Crain. He’s also contributed to recordings by Steve Gunn, Ryley Walker, Bill Callahan & Bonnie Prince Billy (Blind Date Party), and Black Duck (on their self-titled record featuring Douglas McCombs and Charles Rumback). Forget five years — how’d he even get Locust Land squeezed out of his temporal lobes?

Bill ’s sense of music as art is constantly modulating — lifting off from where it is found and naturally migrating to some other place. Sometimes, that’s elsewhere — others, it’s simply to be found deeper inside the starting point. And so, the action of moving on informs the landscape of Locust Land. This manifests in several different ways.

A restless energy and urgency is repeatedly felt — in the driving momentum of “Keeping in Time,” “Glow Drift,” and “When I Was Here” — while a dogged persistence radiates from the tone colors and percussion of “Oh, Pearl.” Mating a dirge-like desolation with sparkling guitars,“Radiator” adds darkness and depth. The sense of searching, displacement and longing in vocal tracks “Keeping in Time,” “Half of You,” and “When I Was Here” speak literally to the tumult of current vibrations.

Within the arrangements, there’s also departure from previous norms — in addition to the brilliant guitar work for which he is known, Bill plays a variety of keyboards, from piano to organ to synth, extending his music with the available voicings, while enriching the sound field without abandoning his signature brevity. For fans of his singing, and following in the recent tradition of Fountain Fire as well as his collaboration with Nathan Bowles, Keys, Locust Land expresses with an increased vocal presence — and heightened engagement, with Bill ’s words and melodies drawing us closer.

Also different: on his previous solo recordings, Bill played every sound. Here, he has invited other illustrious Chicagoans to join him: Sam Wagster ( The Father Costume, Mute Duo) plays bass on three songs, two of which feature the percussion playing of Mikel Patrick Avery (Natural Information Society, Jeff Parker, etc.). Additionally, Janet Beveridge Bean (Eleventh Dream Day, Freakwater) adds otherworldly vocal textures to the elegiac “Neil’s Field.” Whether played alone or with companions, this music projects the strength of a universal collective.

Even with a piece that might earlier have passed for blissful pastorale, Bill displays some declamatory motives. The reverie which opens the album, “Phantasmic Fairy,” embodies both transcendent and desperate moods, with Bill ’s ineffable slide guitar playing afloat, with organs and synths, in a dream state suffused with a sense of foreboding — a requiem, perhaps for the days of unencumbered bandwidth? On the other side of the album, the strength to continue to hope appears in the lifting melodicism/exoticism of the album-closing title track, leaving the listener with the sense of having achieved a hard-won space — a place of personal contemplation and dissent, one that everyone on the planet deserves to visit every single day on earth.

With cover art also by Bill MacKay (the third of his albums on Drag City to feature his work), Locust Land stands as a thoroughly personal statement from Bill to everyone everywhere.

Like a bolt echoing back from the blue, We Have Dozens of Titles restrikes the iron of Gastr del Sol , plunging the listener (that’s us!) back into the maelstrom of their all-too-brief (-but-ultimately-long-enough-to-change-everything-incisively) passage of 1993–1998 via an assembly of previously uncollected studio recordings and beautifully captured unreleased live material.

Gastr del Sol ’s music was of the transformative variety — or was it transfiguration they were up to? Or transmigration? Flux was key, to be sure. David Grubbs formed Gastr from the final lineup of Bastro ; on Gastr del Sol ’s debut, The Serpentine Similar, Grubbs , Bundy K. Brown and John McEntire downshifted from a thrashing electric outfit into a droning, acoustic-based one. Following this, the lineup shifted again, decisively — Brown and McEntire departed to focus on the project to be known as Tortoise, and Jim O’Rourke arrived, pairing with Grubbs to make a sequence of unpredictable leaps across genre and practical approach alike, over three LPs and a pair of EPs that threatened the passage of musical time as we knew it in the mid-90s.

We Have Dozens of Titles contains

nearly an hour of previously unreleased live recordings, alongside another near-hour of studio recordings culled from previously uncollected singles, EPs, and compilations. At long last, vinyl purchasers will hear the full range of “The Harp Factory on Lake Street,” “Dead Cats in a Foghorn,” “Quietly Approaching,” and “The Bells of St. Mary’s” for the first time EVER on vinyl — all of it, live and studio alike, lovingly mastered and remastered by Jim O’Rourke, and packaged in a three-LP box set with a wicked Roman Signer image on its removable lid, interior printing on the box bottom and inner sleeves for each LP with performance credits for all the songs.

As much as Gastr del Sol ’s albums showcase a group eminently at home in the studio, they were inclined to thoroughly reinvent their compositions in performance. While reviewing live tapes for this compilation, the studio versions of most things felt more and more definitive, with the exception of the live takes included here, which essay startling new qualities in pieces that have been in the public ear for several decades.

The majority of these live performances come from a miraculous find in the CBC archive — a broadcast-quality recording of Jim and David from the 1997 Festival Inter-

national de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville. This was the last time they performed together as Gastr del Sol , during which several still-gestating Camoufleur pieces were presented in radically different forms and Jim played organ on a track from David ’s first solo album, the concert-closing, band closing (and now album-closing) version of “Onion Orange.”

The studio recordings included were originally released by the Red Hot Organization, God Mountain, Table of the Elements, Sony Japan, Teenbeat and Drag City. Studios utilized in the making of the material were Idful Music Corporation, Kingsize Soundlab and steamroom. The extended company of players on these numbers includes Jeb Bishop, Bundy K. Brown , Steve Butters , Gene Coleman , Thymme Jones , Terri Kapsalis , John McEntire, Günter Müller, Bob Weston and Sue Wolf — a virtual “what’s who wha’?!?” of Chicago’s hothouse scene in those times.

We Have Dozens of Titles revisits the slow-burning incendiaries of Gastr del Sol , finding, once again and after so much time elapsed, another, further set of reinventions from a group who continues to change the way we hear music.

Jim Rafferty “I See Red”

Should the name Jim Rafferty sound a tad familiar, he is in fact the older brother of Gerry Rafferty, of “Baker Street” and “Stuck In The Middle with You” fame. As a songwriter, Jim had signed a solo deal with Decca in the late 70s. With Gerry in the producer’s chair, and a crack team of the several of the same musicians whom Gerry later recruited for his hit album City To City, Jim produced the album Don’t Talk Back, comprising the kind of sophisticated, melodic material typified, like his brother’s work, by strong emphasis on vocal harmonies the popular style at end of the 1970s.

Decca went out of business concurrent with their release of Jim’s arguably superior second album, Solid Logic, produced by Martin Levan . Times were changing across the music business, and Jim , always seeking new challenges, continued to write interesting, idiosyncratic material. He signed a selfpenned, nervy and minimalist new work “I See Red,” to Hit & Run publishing, which was picked up by Phil Collins

for Abba star Frida’s solo album. The song’s outsider narrative and implied reggae rhythm, made somewhat cartoonishly explicit in Frida ’s version, also found favor with a number of other artists, notably Clannad , whose album Magical Ring included their near identical version of “I See Red,” and gained chart placing in the UK. The same song was subsequently covered by brother Gerry on his Wing and A Prayer album.

The flip-side of Jim’s “I See Red” has its own cover history “Fear Strikes Out” first appeared on Ian Matthews’ 1984 LP, Shook. Matthews , a journeyman who’d once sung in Fairport Convention alongside Judy Dyble and Sandy Denny and later hit the charts several times as a solo act, roots his version firmly in Jim ’s ineffable arrangement, which makes sense bu t Jim’s version notches up the excitement brightly, showcasing sharp guitar and keyboard textures in the mix. And sounding more like a hit.

then-wife, American born singer songwriter Betsy Cook , to form The Urbane Planners , working out of Hugh ’s Buckinghamshire studio on smart pop singles, such as “Spirit of the Thing,” for release on Mays Records. These gained radio exposure in the UK, but failed to get the kind of promotion they deserved. possibly a little too smart for the charts at that point.

Jim continued to write, and returned to his earlier career as a graphic designer, then moved to Canterbury, where he found to his surprise that multi instrumentalist Geoffrey Richardson of Prog-Rock outfit Caravan lived right across the street. The two struck up an immediate musical friendship and began working on material together at Geoffrey ’s studio nearby.

And to the present, where the release of Jim’s relatively unheard version of his own “I See Red” now finally makes its splendidly remastered debut on Drag City. It’s a surprise and delight, not just for Jim, but for collectors of sublime pop songs all around the world.

In the Merry Month of May is the final studio recording of the late, great Tony Conrad, and the first duo release with Jennifer Walshe, one of Conrad’s most important collaborators in the final decade of his life. Befitting these two absurdly gifted hell-raisers, this is a wild, improvisatory flaying of song, with Walshe’s clarion voice at the heart of the enterprise. The sheer sonic force of opener “In the Merry Month of May” recalls the ecstatic charge of Conrad’s Slapping Pythagoras. Ramshackle, go-for-broke performances provide gist for your next twelve months of earworms. ( Walshe’s vocalisms and mantras born of mundanities will dog you; “Day of the Fair” gives “99 Bottles of Beer” a run for its money.) You want comparisons? Why? Conrad’s and Walshe’s prior work are about the only relevant reference points, and even then In the Merry Month of May is a one-of-a-kind concoction whipped up by two fearless and often peerless souls. It’s a joy to hear the two of them, with such manifest mutual regard and commitment to busting a gut.

According to Walshe, early in their collaboration Conrad related how they “first began working together after they ran from service as servants of King Pepy I at the end of Old Kingdom Egypt. They were subsequently monks in Carolingean Gaul during the period roughly 820 to 850, Venetian courtesans at Pope Eugene’s court during the mid 15th century, and prisoners on what was then Van Diemen’s Land in 1843, where Walshe tried to secure Conrad’s escape using ‘remote viewing’ techniques. The unfortunate outcome of the latter incident resulted in Conrad’s work as a stage magician in Australia in the 19th century, where in trying an audience riot, they both accidentally ingested leprosy vectors and subsequently lost three legs and two arms between them.”

We’ve been sitting on this one for a minute, waiting until we have everyone’s attention.

Tony Conrad (1940–2016) was a true polymath, a justifiably celebrated composer, artist, filmmaker, and writer whom the world will be catching up to for years to come. His musical work includes the pre-Velvet Underground (a group whose name was famously suggested by Conrad) group The Primitives, also featuring Lou Reed, John Cale, and Walter De Maria Conrad introduced just intonation into drone-based minimalism through his participation in the Theater of Eternal Music together with La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela, and John Cale. His first album was the 1972 Outside the Dream Syndicate, a collaboration with Faust, and Conrad’s music achieved wider visibility in the 1990s through releases of archival recordings and new works such as Slapping Pythagoras and Early Minimalism, Volume One. His films include The Flicker, Straight and Narrow, and Film Feedback, and Conrad was the subject of Tyler Hubby’s 2016 documentary feature Tony Conrad: Completely in the Present.

“The most original compositional voice to emerge from Ireland in the past 20 years” (The Irish Times) and “Wild girl of Darmstadt” (Frankfurter Rundschau), composer and performer Jennifer Walshe was born in Dublin, Ireland. Her music has been commissioned, broadcast and performed all over the world. Recent projects include TIME TIME TIME, an opera written in collaboration with the philosopher Timothy Morton, and THE SITE OF AN INVESTIGATION, a 30-minute epic for Walshe’s voice and orchestra, commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland A Late Anthology of Early Music Vol. 1: Ancient to Renaissance, her third solo album, was released on Tetbind in 2020. The album uses AI to rework canonical works from early Western music history. A Late Anthology was chosen as an album of the year in The Irish Times, The Wire, and The Quietus Walshe is currently professor of composition at the University of Oxford.

John Rossiter (a.k.a. Young Jesus) had quit music to study permaculture and to work in landscapes and gardens. His last album, Shepherd Head, was too much time spent on the computer. Music had left John tired, jaded, and disconnected. Working with soil and plants gave him some life back. He said, “You know, when gardening, the right decision to make for the landscape is usually the one that is already happening. It just takes time to read what that is."

So, John left the orchard to meet Shahzad Ismaily (Feist, Lou Reed, Arooj Aftab) for lunch. They had connected via email over their mutual admiration of Milford Graves but had yet to meet in person. They instantly bonded, talking about improvisation, rhythm, the heart. On a lark, Shahzad invited John to New York. When John demurred, Shahzad cooked up a scheme to have John working in his garden in between sessions. Half ruse, half invitation. Shahzad The Trickster, leading them deeper into their strange journey.

They improvised whenever they were in the same town. John would work in Shahzad's garden in New York. Back at home in Los Angeles, John met with Alex Babbitt and Alex Lappin to plant fruit trees and build paths from broken concrete. After work, they'd sit at a piano and sing their hearts out.

Songs started to form, songs about shame and grief, love and redemption. They came fast, a song a day for two weeks. It was di erent from past albums, which felt like years of hammering out lyrics and ideas. This one came in the wake of a long illness, where tunes came in a rush, as if they were physical, as if the body couldn’t heal without them. An almost involuntary outpouring, overrunning his usual self - consciousness.

Rossiter had to sit and transcribe without judgment: let the ideas grow on their own. Shahzad was in LA one day when John sat down at the piano and played them for him. They decided to record them at Shahzad's Figure 8 Studios in Brooklyn – these songs would blossom into Young Jesus’ forthcoming album, The Fool

The crew grew naturally from there. Lappin and Babbitt joined them in New York. Phil Weinrobe (Adrianne Lenker, Lonnie Holley) engineered and helped produce the songs. Aaron Roche came and sang. As the week went on, everyone grew closer, talking through the deep darkness in some of these songs. Building trust and friendship. Healing a bit. Rossiter remembers recording the tune "Rich". How it started so uncomfortably. Too much shame, sadness. No connection between the musicians. But, slowly, people showed up. Lappin's great aunt and uncle. Uncle Jack asked John if he'd ever talked to a therapist and everyone burst out laughing. Shahzad's daughter. Everyone shared some food and laughed. By the end they were singing the nal line of the song - "back when I was a kid"together.

Rossiter and Lappin went back to LA to nish the songs. They guided each other in the same way they built those broken concrete paths in the garden - sometimes using a sledgehammer, sometimes using their bare hands. Shahzad and Daniel Littleton (of IDA) happened to be in LA, and they came together to do a couple takes of "Rabbit" with Pete Min at Lucy's Meat Market. It was deeply connected music and they left the session laughing. Phil Weinrobe and Phil Hartunian (Westerman, Florist) mixed the record, former Young Jesus drummer Kern Haug mastered it. Inner landscaping requires presence and bravery. It can get pretty dark and strange the deeper you walk into that jungle. And it’s from the absolute pits of that inner landscape that the truest music rises from. At the end of the last session, Rossiter and Lappin sat down and drew tarot cards. John drew The Fool.

Nightports is based on a simple but unbreakable rule of restriction: only sounds produced by the featured musician can be used. Nothing else. These sounds can be transformed, distorted, translated, processed and reprocessed, stretched, cut, ordered and reordered without limitation.

Dulcitone 1804 is the fourth collaborative album by musician-producers Adam Martin and Mark Slater to be released on The Leaf Label, following a trilogy of albums with Matthew Bourne (2018), The Comet Is Coming’s drummer Betamax (2020) and double bassist Tom Herbert (2022). Nightports are reunited with pianist and composer Matthew Bourne, this time exploring a rare 19th century keyboard instrument called a dulcitone.

The dulcitone produces sound when felt-covered hammers hit a series of tuning forks, causing them to vibrate - a precursor to the now iconic Fender Rhodes, which took the same concept but was designed for electric amplification. It was invented by Thomas Machell in Glasgow in around 1860 and produced in small quantities for about 40 years. Dulcitone 1804 was produced on instrument number 1804, and is believed to be the first album made entirely on the dulcitone.

The album came about almost by accident, when Martin and Slater were at Bourne’s studio working on another project and spotted a small, unassuming instrument against the wall. “As Matthew does with all instruments he plays, the first sounds he made with the dulcitone were immediately beautiful,” Martin explains. “Somewhere between a celeste and a piano, it has a clear, bell-like quality that’s evocative of a strange other world. Something old and distant.”

When Richard Thompson began writing songs for his latest album, Ship to Shore, the artist was instinctively drawn to his own musical roots, employing them in the service of fashioning a deep and diverse 12-track collection that pulls from various styles, genres and eras, but remains unmistakably Richard Thompson. “That might be our Magical Mystery Tour,” says Combustible Edison bassist Nick Cudahy of his band’s experience creating the Four Rooms soundtrack. When you consider that the process involved a whirlwind trip to Hollywood, quirky legends like Quentin Tarantino and Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh, and a film where Madonna commands a coven of witches and a drunken Bruce Willis recounts TV trivia wearing a women’s 1920s flapper-style headdress, Cudahy's assessment starts to make a lot of sense.

Influenced by ‘50s/’60s cocktail culture; the exotica of Martin Denny, Esquivel, and Les Baxter; the slinky film scores of Henry Mancini; and a passel of other mid-century thrift-store denizens, Combustible Edison’s music already seemed like the lost soundtrack to some early-’60s Hollywood farce. The only albums that it can be vaguely compared to is either the Velvet Underground or United States of America, both bands that, like Ars Nova, bucked against existing trends and the end of psychedelia, instead preferring to go their own unique way.

This is American progressive music, and takes the art of music making into a different genre, an alternative alleyway. The intelligence and musical nous that spans [this album] is really worth diving into and enjoying. It’s always great to get to hear albums like this, as it provides a counterpoint to the contemporary of the time and gives a real insight into the underground and alternative scene of that era. The beauty of being underground and away from the mainstream is that something that is not of its time ends up being timeless.

Crafted by the forward-thinking technological innovator and rocket scientist, Bill Sebastian, during the mid-1970s, the Outer Space Visual Communicator (OVC) stood as a groundbreaking invention. Instead of producing traditional sound, this keyboard-triggered "instrument" harnessed the power of light, casting mesmerising kaleidoscopic, multicoloured patterns onto a screen suspended above performers on stage. Ra first performed with the idiosyncratic fractal light projector in the late ‘70s and, in 1986, two grainy VHS tapes surfaced featuring Ra performing ‘Calling Planet Earth’ and ‘Sunset On The Nile’, both accompanied by the OVC’s radiantlightpainting.

“I was curious about the performances,” explains Irwin Chusid, administrator of the Sun Ra catalogue. “I couldn't locate these terrific versions and wondered from where they originated. I discovered that not only was Bill Sebastian alive but he was still in Boston developing advancediterationsoftheOVC,whichbythenincorporatedVirtualReality(VR)technology.”

Sebastian and Chusid embarked on the intricate task of assembling the session tapes sourced from Sebastian's archives. These recordings, which took place on August 25, 1986, at Mission Control studios in Westford, Massachusetts, were originally spontaneous and never intended for a formal album release. Although the tape transfers yielded remarkable material, the recordings remained in an unmixed state, prompting Chusid to collaborate with engineer Joe Lizzi. Together, they embarked on the journey of reconstructing each track with painstaking precision.

The end result is nothing short of a revelation, featuring exceptional performances by the Arkestra. This release unveils previously unheard renditions of Sun Ra classics such as 'Love In Outer Space,' 'El Is A Sound Of Joy,' and 'Calling Planet Earth.' Additionally, it offers a complete performance of 'Discipline 27-II,' making it a musical gem for fans and collectors alike.

The package features stills from the original OVC videos, extensive liner notes and a full interview with Bill Sebastian. The album is fully remastered from the original reel to reel tapes byJoeLizziandPeterBeckmann.

UNESSENTIAL OILS is the search for something authentic. Bits and pieces of Warren Spicer’s life — traumas and weaknesses, successes and breakthroughs, moments of clarity and enlightenment mixed with the mundane and menial. The weight of grief and anger imposed on the joy and ecstatic freedom of new life. “I wanted to expose truths and realities inside myself, and not create illusions and beautiful places in which to hide and conceal myself. It’s the opposite of escapism, it’s about the feeling of home and safety and welcoming people into my world,” explains Spicer.

Warren is widely known as the front-person for Montreal band Plants and Animals, as well as an award-winning producer, engineer and mixer. This is his first solo record, an opportunity to take all his collective experience and focus on a unique, singular vision.

Inspired by jazz, folk, Tropicália, Jorge Ben, Daniel Lanois, and Miles Davis, the idea for Unessential Oils’ music came to be while Warren was soaking in the bath. Open and flexible, it is in the spirit of Alabaster DePlume, Connan Mockasin, Hermanos Gutiérrez and Devendra Banhart . The result is an album that is somewhat like a jazz record in that it focuses on the musicians’ performances. Many of the songs are quite minimal in terms of songwriting, but the execution and the musicianship are at the heart of this album; they are adventurous with room for embellishment and improvisation.

Distants, at one point, were a Chicago band. Back in 2016, when the band started, the members were all based in the Windy City, but as the years passed life got more complicated. Today the band describes itself as having members who “live in various cities throughout the eastern Midwest,” with no specific home base.

The kinds of complications that prompted that shift feel like the same things that fuel Alex Angus’s songwriting on LP. Angus, who sings and plays guitar described the record as being about “loss/grief, ego, shit jobs, and self-awareness” and there’s a cathartic quality to songs like “Belly Up” and “Jolly Good.” But the record, which weaves between punk, emo and indie-rock, is anything but a downer. The opener “Great Lakes Paving Company” soars with dueling guitars from Angus and Mynor Gonzalez while backed by Steve Brewer on drums and Zach Leipham on bass. Distants' LP has a classic Midwestern quality of sounding shiny and bright and gruff and dark all at the same time.

After the release of the first three albums „In Memoriam“, „Nights Of Lust“ and „Miserere“ Jason Köhnen (Mansur / The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble / The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation) has created The Lovecraft Sextet’s first soundtrack to a yet to be created movie. The Horror Cosmic is a Lovecraftian cosmic horror short story which dives into the existential dread of the infinite nothingness. The album was composed as a soundtrack to accompany the illustrated short story and is an expanded step in the multidisciplinary aspect of the Lovecraft Sextet project. Therefore this release should be listened to as a soundtrack with compositions working to accentuate a specific mood to the specific chapters of the story. The Horror Cosmic will also be release as a very limited custom Hardcover illustrated short story book with a special vinyl color LP.

Make no mistake, Bersarin Quartett is an incredible release in the electronica world, but one that fans of many other genres will enjoy.

Short Biography:

Blood and Sun is dark folk written by Luke Tromiczak and performed by a rotating group of musicians from across the United States.

Formed in 2011, the group has received international praise for its dark, brooding, gothic songwriting. Blood and Sun thematically wrestles with personal tribulations and drive intertwined with metaphysical and pagan currents, delivering soaring and haunting melodies extolling the heroism and tragedy of life, its joyous excess and the vertigo of fate.

Although the music has an ancient sound, and nostalgia for the arcane, the band does not align itself with hateful rhetoric or ideologues and is not political in nature. Blood and Sun hopes for a world that is empowering to all of its listeners, where individuals of all backgrounds and identities are treated fairly, with respect, compassion and intrigue for our shared human condition. We strive for a re-sacralization of the world that adds to the mystery and awe in life. A world of meaning and purpose felt and shared.

In 2013, Tromiczak relocated from his hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota to Brooklyn, New York to pursue his MFA, and continues to write and perform as Blood and Sun across the United States, Canada, and Europe with an ever expanding cast of characters and longstanding friends.
