This Issue: Michael Schulman at Slumberland Records
What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?
I think that it’s been the same for our bands as for many others - while there was still strong interest in the music it just wasn’t possible to tour and have that more personal, direct connection with the fans. For small bands and small labels it almost feels *more* important to have that, since we can’t always count on extensive press or radio support.
Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?
How did you personally get started in the music industry?
I’ve been a music fan for as long as I can remember and spent a lot of time during my pre-teen years exploring my parents’ pretty-decent record collection. When I hit my teens I got into punk then post-punk, DIY, indie labels etc and was WAY into record collecting. Early in my college years
I worked at my college radio station (WMUC, at the University of MD, College Park) and made weekly (sometimes daily!) trips to local record shops. This led to what I might consider my first industry job, working in a suburban MD record store called Vinyl Ink.
When and where did the label begin?
When I started at college (1983) there weren’t *that* many people who were into the kind of music that I was, and we all tended to find each other at the radio station, at gigs, at the local record shops. I had a particularly tight posse that I would hang out with, listen to records, go to shows, etc. We were into noise rock sort of stuff (Sonic Youth, Swans, Big Black, Head of David, The Birthday Party, etc) but also DIY/indie pop like Creation label, K, Flying Nun, Postcard and the like.
The Jesus & Mary Chain was a galvanizing influence because they kind of mashed all of that up, which was super exciting to us. After seeing the Mary Chain play in DC in November 1985 a few of us decided to make the jump from just listening to also making music. Most of us had no or very little experience, so we were making an awfully primitive racket. As time went on and our group of friends had coalesced into a few different groups (Whorl, Velocity Girl, Black Tambourine) and started playing shows, we wanted to document what we were doing, so one of us bought a 4-track cassette deck and we all started tinkering with making recordings.
With recordings in hand and being a bunch of vinyl-obsessed goofs, we thought it might be a giggle to make a single. Since what we were doing seemed too weird and primitive to take to other labels, and since some of us worked at stores and sort of knew how distribution worked, we figured we might as well do it ourselves. Slumberland’s first release was a 3 song compilation 7”, which came out in December 1989.
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
A lot of the original SLR crew were into comics and at the time there were some reprints of an early 1900s Sunday comic called Little Nemo In Slumberland coming out. It’s an amazing strip, and the weird psychedelic nature of it appealed. Slumberland Records it was.
How has the label changed since it started?
It’s been over 30 years so there’s been a LOT of change - moving to the west coast, going through periods of varied levels of activity, rolling with it when certain records have taken off well beyond our expectations. In some ways the biggest change came early - the decision to go outside our group of friends and start putting records out by other people. That move transitioned the label from being a vanity project to being more of a *real* label, and I’m still reckoning with that decision 30 years later!
Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. When we first started the label was a collective effort of that original group of friends that comprised the first batch of bands. We all pitched in to stuff records in sleeves, pack orders, etc. After a few years more and more of the work wound up in my hands – partially because I was willing to do it, and because the stock was at the house I lived in and also because some of the other folks were in a band that was becoming more popular and keeping them on the road touring. When I moved to California the label came with me, and since then it’s been a one-person show, spiced up by the occasional intern or record stuffing party with friends.
When we started the label we definitely focused on the DC-area bands that started the label and the small scene that grew up around/with them, like Lorelei, The Ropers, Lilys, etc.
After we moved to California we started working with Bay Area/Sacramento/north bay bands like Henry’s Dress, Rocketship, The Aislers Set and The Softies. In the last several years we’ve released a lot of records by Bay Area bands, like The Reds, Pinks & Purples, The Umbrellas, Kids On A Crime Spree, Artsick, Lunchbox and more. I’ve never thought of Slumberland as locals-only label but I do like working with bands that you can hang out with and go see play live a lot. It’s just fun that way!
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
I reckon that most people would think of Slumberland as an indiepop label, and while we certainly (and unashamedly!) have put out a lot of indiepop records, I’d like to think we cover a lot more territory than that, though all under the general banner of indie guitar pop/rock.
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?
I don’t think the goals have really changed all that much. I just want to release records that I like that fit into this ongoing narrative that we’ve developed. I don’t have any illusions about growing the label; my goal is to help bands get their music heard and whatever success follows that is sort of incidental.
What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?
I wouldn’t exactly call it wild, but we did do subway stations ads for Weekend’s Jinx ‘cause we got a great deal on them. I have no idea how effective they were but they sure looked cool!
Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs??
Just as we never stopped pressing vinyl, even in the dark days of the early and mid 00s, we also never stopped making CDs and will continue to do so as long as people want them. We have started making cassettes for some releases – it’s nice to have a format that we can economically make in small numbers and that doesn’t take a year to manufacture!
How would you describe the average fan of the label?
I think the typical SLR fan is an explorer, someone who does their own digging and doesn’t wait for the press to tell them what’s up. They’re fans of good songwriting and put more value on tunes than whether a band is cool or being talked about. And obviously they have exquisite taste!
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
That would have to be the advent and growth of digital music, from the early years of file sharing to the near-collapse of record retail to the brief bounce of digital sales and now to what might be the end-game of streaming. While I welcome the democratizing nature of digital music, its ubiquity does make it harder and harder to sell records, and I think in some ways trivializes the art itself, commodifying and devaluing it.
If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards?
I used to co-operate a side label that specialized in leftfield electronic/dance records, and if I started another side or sub-label it would probably also be in that area, and/or new jazz.

On Patrol, originally released in 2010, is a double album in two parts, and the fourth full length album from SUN ARAW. An album for heavy-steamin’ late nights in the city, inter-dimensional back alleys, ghost cabs; it creeps and tunes in on a much darker, sparser, and more classically minded channel than its predecessors: dark and deep steam-vent ruminations on Phil Cohran , lenticular objects, and fried Hot 92.3 R&B slow-jams. A cold bug makes a real “live wire.”

OVERVIEW
Kassa Overall is a Grammy-nominated musician, emcee, singer, producer and drummer who melds avant-garde experimentation with hip-hop production techniques to tilt the nexus of jazz and rap in unmapped directions. On his Warp Records debut, ANIMALS, Kassa pushes his kaleidoscopic, subversive vision further. He layers Roland 808s against avant-garde drumming in the vein of his mentors Elvin Jones and Billy Hart, the latter of whom he studied with at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Virtuoso musos appear alongside rap poets, including Danny Brown, Wiki, Lil B, and Shabazz Palaces. Top-flight jazz improvisation weaves in and out of orchestral string arrangements by Jherek Bischoff. The album’s diverse, all-star roster of collaborators includes several of his close friends, like vocalists Nick Hakim, Laura Mvula, Francis and the Lights, and jazz stars like Theo Croker and Vijay Iyer.

“[Water From Your Eyes] holds your gaze long after the mystery fades, channeling a powerful sense of empathy to mesmerizing effect.” - Pitchfork
Life is horribly dark right now. And yet, it is not unfunny.
That’s the sentiment that animates Water From Your Eyes on their new album, and first for Matador, ‘Everyone’s Crushed.’ On the follow-up to the Brooklyn duo’s 2021 breakthrough, ‘Structure,’ Rachel Brown (they/them) and Nate Amos (he/ him) find silliness and fatalism dancing in a frantic lockstep, using heart palpitating rhythms and absurdist, deadpan lyrics to convey stories of personal and societal unease. Described by Brown as Water From Your Eyes’ most collaborative record ever – and, as such, a kind of reset for the pair, almost like a debut, despite technically being their sixth –it’s a swollen contusion of an album: experimental pop music that’s pretty and violent, raw and indelible.

Nite Bjuti
Nite Bjuti
Nite Bjuti (pronounced night beauty) is a US-based, Afro-Caribbean, woman-led improvised experimental trio of vocalist Candice Hoyes, GRAMMY-nominated sound chemist Val Jeanty and bassist Mimi Jones - who weave together multiple strands of storytelling using voice, bass, electro percussion, turntables, Haitian drums, dance and visual projections.
The trio was formed in 2018 after Hoyes performed an Afrofuturism concert at Jazz at Lincoln Center where she is a lecturer, inviting Jeanty to play and collaborate. This performance revealed a powerful chemistry that l ed to extended studio improvisations and an invitation to Mimi Jones - a fellow Berklee professor with Jeanty.
All 11 tracks on this album are entirely improvised. "The sound is completely authentic and we're actually making it on the spot," explains Jean ty. The results from this purely improvisatory approach, along with the musicians' individual skills and contemplative methodology is an inimitable soundworld realised in a record rooted by Jones' and Jeanty's basslines and rhythms, with Hoyes' cerebral vo cal lines skilfully cutting through.Nite Bjuti is a captivating jazz record, honouring the traditions of musical improvisation and which is deeply respectful to the subjects and narratives it takes inspiration from - an important new entry to the jazz canon.

David Preston
Purple / Black Vol.1
When David Preston started composing for the project that became his first solo LP, he opened up some fascinating new perspectives, in contrast to his acclaimed work with high-octane fusioneers Preston/ Glasgow/Lowe he found himself drawn to simple forms, textures and moods - 'not going full tilt all the time'
To realize his vision, he assembled a cast of extraordinary musical explorers. Building on his relationship with six -string bassist Kevin Glasgow as a foundation, he chose multi-genre drummer Seb Rochford, equally at home playing with the avante- jazz of Polar Bear as he is with pop sensation Adele, and rounded the team off with front-rank composer, arranger, pianist and organist Kit Downes. All players whose approach could simultaneously encompass both simplicity and deep complexity, and match the freedom to improvise with a respect for the concision and directness of the song.
David took them into the studio and the band instantly gelled, diving into a mammoth session that yielded enough material for two full albums. Volume 1Purple / Black is the first offering - a coherent suite of song-form tunes whose direct, uncluttered melodicism conceals hidden depths that reveal themselves anew at each listen.

Kira Linn
Illusion
German baritone saxophonist and composer Kira Linn presents Illusion, alongside her six-piece band - the Linntett, the album moves in genres ranging from pop to jazz and indie to electro, neosoul and R&B, played by three saxophones (Linn on baritone, Nino Wenger on alto and Christoper Kunz on tenor) as well as Rhodes (Lukas Großmann), electric bass (Lukas Keller) and drums (Johannes Koch).
Linn's technique and training are rooted in more traditional big band and modern jazz styles, but she has also been influenced by the likes of Billie Eilish, Arlo Parks and Laura Mvula, making for an album with an exciting mix of styles. For the first time, she sings and has written her own lyrics. "I started to write songs and also I wanted to use my voice," she explains. "It's so different from playing notes because of course, it's so much more direct." Anger and powerlessness, but also strength, diversity and freedom are core concepts that run through the record, "the songs are all inspired by emotions and topics that came up during the pandemic," Linn says. These concepts are also represented visually in the design with bright, bold colors and a bandleader who takes on a new form in every picture.
Illusions is an album demonstrating the startling creativity of Linn who so competently uses her work to speak about social themes on her own terms and in her own distinctive way - a refreshing new record from a refreshing new voice on the scene.

Nino Wenger: alto saxophone, flute, alto flute
Christopher Kunz: tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone
Lukas Keller: electric bass

An expanded view of Tomek’s 1983 no wave punk funk celebration of the Fairlight CMI (Computer Musical Instrument), recorded in the home of Stones producer Jimmy Miller, from the freshly baked original tapes!
Funk is a key element of Lamprecht’s musical makeup and the common denominator on “Contract,” “Prelude,” and the previously unreleased “Kill” and “Things Will Come and Pass Like Magic.” “I was paying attention to it and learning from it quite a bit,” he says. “Part of my drumming on the record was a reference to the early funk stuff. I was totally into it.”
Punk funk was one of the most vital sounds of the early ‘80s NYC underground, exemplified by bands like Liquid Liquid, ESG, Bush Tetras, Defunkt, and Model Citizens offshoot The Dance.
After a deceptively spacey intro that could have fallen out the back window of Pink Floyd’s tour bus, opening track “Reminder” lays down a minimalist groove somewhere between the urban grit of NYC No Wave and the post-punk abjection of Joy Division. Lamprecht’s lyrics set out a series of contradictions as the atmosphere grows increasingly disorienting and nightmarish, as if a French New Wave film were slowly morphing into a sci-fi B movie.
The full-length version of “Jingle,” heard on this package for the first time, was represented only by an 18-second excerpt on the original record. A gloriously goofy, sample-happy sonic carnival including a barking dog, shouting, coughing, car horns, crashes, whistles, and more, it sounds like the Marx Brothers set loose at an Art of Noise session.
Recorded at RPM Studio by The man who oversaw classics like Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile on Main St. It was decked out with cutting-edge equipment, including the revolutionary Fairlight CMI (Computer Musical Instrument), one of the first samplers. It literally cost as much as a house at the time.
The original 1983 Tomek record contained only six tracks, two of them under a minute long. “I wanted it to be an album,” says Lamprecht, “but everything got compressed and it ended up being an EP.” Four decades later, the full fruits of those sessions are here at last. Lamprecht’s lifelong opposition to virtuosity may have kept him out of the conservatory, but it freed his mind to move in ways we’re only just now finding out about in full.

BLACK COUNTRY, NEW ROAD
LIVE AT BUSH HALL
Release Date: May 26th, 2023
Following the release of the band’s critically acclaimed “Live at Bush Hall” film, Black Country, New Road have announced a new live album featuring the set from their three sold out back-to-back shows at Bush Hall in December 2022. “Live at Bush Hall” is available on black LP via Ninja Tune.
In early 2022, Black Country, New Road released their UK #3 and Billboard #9 (Vinyl Albums) album “Ants From Up There” (their second Top 5 UK album debut in 12 months, following their A2IM Libera Award nominated “For the first time”), which was lauded by fans and critics alike, spending 6 weeks in the Top 10 of the NACC Top 200, gaining numerous 5* reviews and appearing on end of year lists across the globe, including being voted #1 by fans on r/indieheads, Rate Your Music and #3 by Pitchfork readers.
Fresh from the success of “Ants From Up There” and with a full touring schedule ahead of them in 2023, the now six-piece band decided to write an entire new set of material to perform. They played to swelling crowds at festivals, including triumphant performances at Primavera, Green Man and Fuji Rock, entering a new musical phase as they navigated and developed songs that were just weeks old. They also toured the US with black midi and headlined two shows at Bowery Ballroom in New York, the first of which sold out in under 5 minutes. Their US tour was covered Pitchfork, Stereogum, Paste, and more.
The band garnered widespread support for this new material across the board with Rolling Stone UK describing their Green Man set as "unmissable", and the Guardian going on to say that they were "greeted by something close to rapture." These performances have also attracted a profile from the New York Times, multiple glowing live reviews, and a nomination for Best Live Performer at the AIM Independent Music Awards last year.

OVERVIEW
One of the most important voices in British folk music, Shirley Collins returns with Archangel Hill Archangel Hill showcases another peerless collection of songs chosen by Collins, some from traditional sources but others from favourite writers of hers.
Produced by Ian Kearey - Shirley Collins’ musical director - the arrangements were shared between Collins, Kearey, Pip Barnes, as well as Dave Arthur and Pete Cooper, players from The Lodestar Band.
All of the songs on Archangel Hill were recorded last year except for “Hand And Heart”, which was taken from a live performance at the Sydney Opera House in 1980 and features an arrangement by Shirley’s beloved and talented sister Dolly Collins.
Since the release of Collins’ last album (Heart’s Ease, 2020), her first book America Over The Water has been republished.

ESUS ON THE MAINLINE is drawn from two 1971 concerts; April 14th, 1971 in Tacoma, Washington, and November 5th, 1971at the Gaslight In New York, which would prove to be the final recording of the Delta Blues legend. The bottleneck guitarist was 67 years old when these tracks were recorded and his passion and conviction seem to have strengthened with the years. At this point in McDowell’s career he had shifted to playing electric slide guitar. Accompanying McDowell’s gruff voice, the guitar often seems to finish the singer’s sentences for him; it’s like listening to an old married couple.

The original recording of Swervedriver’s debut 4 song EP, finally available for retail! Released by the band last year and only available directly to their fans via Bandcamp, the first pressing of Petroleum Spirit Daze sold out in a flash. We convinced the band that a repressing was in order, and this time it comes on a lovely gold vinyl. To give you a little backstory on this recording, let’s go to Adam Franklin
“It was an open secret in Oxford that local young whippersnappers Ride had been signed to Creation Records but that label was going to wait until January of 1990 to release their debut record. We decided to get our skates on and get a record deal and the clock was already counting down”
Heading into the studio in April of 1990, Swervedriver recorded their debut EP, the 4 songs that would become the “Son of Mustang Ford” EP, but Alan Magee wanted the band to re-record it in London so off they went. This original recording was then filed away for 30 years, only to be dug up by the band and have them discover that in fact this original recording was the perfect debut, the sound of a band just moments away from being discovered by the world.

GOAT - WORLD MUSIC
When the mysterious masked collective calling themselves Goat first emerged in 2012, armed with an incendiary debut album ‘World Music’ and a backstory for the ages – the band’s anonymous members hailing from the remote village of Korpilombo in northern Sweden, where inhabitants had for centuries been devoted to a form of voodoo introduced by a travelling witch doctor – there was, and there still isn’t, anyone else on earth quite like them.
Their mythology enticing, their music full of sinuous grooves and manic explosions of fuzz, Goat were outliers from the very beginning. ‘World Music’, received an avalanche of acclaim with critics, psych heads, outernational crate diggers etc, all left enraptured by its thunderous intensity, conjured from a singular mix of sounds from across the globe.
Now, exactly a decade later, Rocket Recordings and the band have decided to dust-off the original recordings of ‘World Music’ and pass them over to the capable hands of the team at the legendary Abbey Road Studios to remaster the tracks and make them shine like they have never before. The results are better than we could have hoped. New details within the tracks have been revealed and - most importantly - the fuzz is even more explosive than before. You hear every crackle of electricity as it flows through the pedals.
‘World Music’s famous die-cut sleeve has been updated too, the colours of the eye-popping pattern have been reversed from the original, making this package even more desirable.
The album is brimming with tracks now seen as ‘classic’ Goat live favourites. Tracks that have been wowing audiences all over the world; the afrobeat stomp of ‘Disco Fever’, the fuzz abuse of ‘Goathead’, the post-punk groove of ‘Let it Bleed’, the sing-along repetitive pop of ‘Run to your Mama’... From the first note to the last, ‘World Music’ oozes with a sonic confidence rarely seen on a debut album.
Over the last 10 years many bands have tried to recreate the addictive ingredients which make up Goat’s cosmic soup, but none have ever come close to getting the recipe right. What Goat have is unique. They have an unsurpassed level of authenticity and honesty that makes them stand head and shoulders above all their imitators. They’ve managed to create a sound unrestrained by genre boundaries. There literally is still no other band on earth that sounds quite like them.

About “Two Beasts”:
“For the uninitiated, “Two Beasts” is a comprehensive document of where SUMAC was in the late fall of 2020. The song hits on all the elements that make the band unique. Bowel-loosening low end? Check. Indecipherable time signature patterns? Yup. Long, empty pauses and repetitive structures? Yessir. Mammoth grooves? You betcha. “Two Beasts” is experimental metal at its finest, 18 minutes of left turns with enough rewarding pay-offs to make it worth a close listen. The band’s newfound love of negative space and jazz-inspired arrangements counterintuitively add an element of danger to the music. If big riffage is heavy music’s best friend and quiet moments its kryptonite, then SUMAC seem to operate under the adage keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.
One of SUMAC’s strengths, once again evident on “Two Beasts,” is their commitment to fidelity. SUMAC recordings sound good. It’s hard to imagine music this brutal being so pleasurable to listen to, and it’s a major differentiator between them and their peers. Once again recorded at The Unknown, an old, converted church in the sleepy Washington town of Anacortes, “Two Beasts” sounds live and meticulously produced at the same time. This is most likely a testament to the exquisite ability of the players and recording engineers involved; these are music lifers at the top of their game. Listening to “Two Beasts,” SUMAC is a band that can seemingly do anything.” - post-trash.com
About SUMAC:
SUMAC was formed in 2014 by the core trio of Aaron Turner (also of Old Man Gloom, ISIS, etc), Nick Yacyshyn (also of Baptists, Erosion, etc), and Brian Cook ( Botch, Russian Circles, etc). “The Deal” their debut album, was recorded in 2014 and released in 2015. SUMAC has subsequently released 3 more studio albums via Thrill Jockey Records, a 7” EP via Sub Pop, and 3 collaborative albums with Japanese avant icon Keiji Haino, also via Thrill Jockey. Though the members have continued activities with their other bands, SUMAC functions as a fully operational unit, touring and recording extensively in the 8 years since their inception. They are currently at work on a new album due for release in late 2023. SUMAC routinely invests in the recursive exercises of chaos and control.

NO EXPORT TO EUROPE/UK, JAPAN, AUSTRALIA/NZ; SEND III EVERYWHERE ELSE WITH TOTAL CONFIDENCE
In May of 1996, with a handful of releases under their belts, the kings of the insanity sound, then known simply as: The Champs, began recording their magnum octopus, III . This time their sights were set beyond the still diminutive cassette format and trained squarely on a gatefold double album the perfect medium for Total Music. Over the next year, in between touring up and down the west coast, the band molded the Kubrickian monolith known as III
In May of 1997, after lugging a console, tape machines, speakers and a smattering of outboard gear up three flights of stairs, the band mixed the album in the bedroom of a third floor apartment, directly overlooking the 280 freeway. The noise floor was such that all windows remained closed for the duration of the process.
Over the next six weeks they played wherever people thirsted for something compelling and different, something to rock out with their Bach out, in a word, well two words, Total Music . While on the road, the band also searched for a suitable record label willing to make the financial commitment a gatefold double album requires a tall order for a band virtually unknown outside of the west coast and the borough of Manhattan. Ultimately, the eclectic San Francisco label, Frenetic, took the plunge and generously emptied their modest
coffers to fund the manufacture of III , which was released under the legally distinct band name: C4AM95. In print, the name was easily decoded by use of the ubiquitous “devil horns” or “maloik”, with the index finger covering the awkward section of the 4 and the underrated pinkie finger covering the southern portion of the 9. This deliberate obfuscation shielded the band from increasingly ominous communications emanating from Nashville concerning the similarity in name to a certain band from the 1950’s.
After the release of III , The Champs continued to tour the US, embarking on (and completing) six tours before the turn of the millennium. It was at this point the powers that be at Drag City International realized they could sit on the sidelines no longer and committed to release the band’s aptly titled follow-up, IV (on which I was honored to guest, playing bass on the only Champs song ever to feature that instrument). However, one obstacle stood in the band’s way to global dissemination of Total Music : the seemingly benign moniker they had saddled themselves with so many years earlier. After much discussion and consultation with The Oracle, it was determined that adding the supplemental “Fucking” to The Champs name would clear up any confusion regarding another band of the same name from the

The band subsequently released four albums with Drag City, an EP with Thrill Jockey, and a collection of greatest hits on Matador. They contributed music to moving pictures (both television and film) and wrote music for video games, such as The Sims . They collaborated with French sensations Justice They toured the US, Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, and spread the totality of Total Musi c far and wide. Name dropped by luminaries such as Chloë Sevigny, they were often cited as inspiration by sources from Metallica to The Strokes to that guy from Guided by Voices The Fucking Champs left an indelible mark on the musical consciousness of the second to last and final millennia.
For this special 26th anniversary edition of III , the album was remastered by the band from the original master tapes, lacquers expertly cut by John Golden and artwork restored by forensic experts in Drag City’s employ. Long sought after on eBay, Discogs and the like, this will be the first time that this master stroke of musicality will be made widely available.
I hope you enjoy this timeless classic as much I have these past 25 years.
