This Issue: Tim Putnam from Partisan Records
How did you personally get started in the music industry?
I was always drawn to music. I played music, but was never very good at it. So, those who can’t do, teach… and those who can’t teach work in the music industry.
When and where did the label begin?
We started it out of my apartment in Brooklyn, NY in 2006.
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
It comes from the Leonard Cohen song, The Partisan.
How has the label changed since it started?
We’ve added more people, and signed more bands, and though the ethos and mission of the label has evolved, the spirit has remained the same.
Is the label tied to a specific geographical area?
How is this reflected in your releases?
We have our main offices in Brooklyn and London, though we have people working / satellite offices in LA, Virginia, Berlin, etc… and teams globally throughout the world. So I wouldn’t say our releases are necessarily tied to a specific geographical area. Great music comes from all over, and so do our artists.
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
It is a mix.
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?
I never wanted to be the biggest label. I wanted us to
keep improving what we do, for the artists we do it for. I also wanted the label to be a place where people who share a passion for great art could work, grow, and pursue their own dreams. Ultimately, if I do my job right, I’ll put myself out of a job. I think those ambitions have just become more solidified over the years.
How would you describe the average fan of the label?
I wouldn’t because I think everyone is different given our roster, which is eclectic.
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
The emergence of digital / streaming.
If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards?
It would be called Party-san Records and we’d release music about partying and such.
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered?
As a safe harbor for humans before AI took over.

Originally released in 1995, Spanners is the second album from The Black Dog and their first for Warp Records. In 2017 it was selected by Pitchfork as one of ‘The 50 Best IDM Albums of All Time’. The reissue will be the first time the vinyl is available since its original pressing in 1995. After this release the original trio of Ed Handley, Andy Turner and Ken Downie went their separate ways - Handley and Turner formed Plaid, whilst Downie carried on with The Black Dog name, initially by himself, and latterly with the assistance of brothers Martin and Richard Dust.

MIKAELA DAVIS AND SOUTHERN STAR
STREET DATE: AUGUST 4, 2023
Five years since her debut album Delivery, Mikaela Davis has moved away from her hometown of Rochester, shared the stage with the likes of Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Christian McBride, Bon Iver, Lake Street Dive and Circles Around the Sun and entered a new decade. But it’s the ever-evolving relationships between her closest friends and bandmates that has propelled the Hudson Valley-based artist onto her latest album And Southern Star––a truly collaborative effort that ruminates on the choices we make, and the people we always come back to.
The band, made up of Davis (harp/vocals), Alex Coté (drums), Cian McCarthy (guitars/vocals), Shane McCarthy (bass/vocals) and Kurt Johnson (steel guitar), have been playing together for over a decade and it’s the first time they’ve appeared on a full length record together. Weaving 60s pop-soaked melodies, psychedelia and driving folk rock, And Southern Star picks apart the reflection we used to recognise, while trying to build a new one. It navigates the periphery of past selves, the coexistence of isolation and excitement in a new environment and the tension of growing away from what we thought we wanted, tackling it with a luscious, kaleidoscopic grace. “I finally feel like this album is more me than anything else that’s been released,” Davis says, adding that producing the album along with her four bandmates allowed them to carve out their own ideas, rather than someone else’s. It’s the band’s collective step into adulthood that has informed much of And Southern Star’s thematic landscape.
PANDA BEAR TOMBOY
OVERVIEW
Recorded at his studio in Lisbon, Tomboy sees Animal Collective member Panda Bear aka Noah Lennox stepping away from the sample-based parameters of his previous record, Person Pitch, and incorporating more guitar and synthesizer. The record, massive in its span of emotion, genre, and sound, is the welcome return of one of the most prolific and consistent audio pioneers in recent memory.
"Noah Lennox is one of the most brilliant minds in contemporary music, and this release only helps to solidify his position atop the music world."

"Lennox has re-focused on the most old-fashioned musical pursuit there is: songwriting. More than ever, Lennox is penning music that can be played on a Steinway as easily as a MacBook [and] has perfected the genre he helped create on Tomboy, while setting himself apart from it."

THE RUBINOOS THE RUBINOOS
WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE: NOVEMBER 25, 2022
The Rubinoos’ 1977 self-titled debut album is a power pop classic containing the hit “I Think We’re Alone Now,” as well as the anthemic “Rock And Roll Is Dead,” which in the context of the disco-era in which this album was released, was almost accurate. At the time of release, the influential New York Rocker declared the album, “The best pop album of the decade.” The band performed on American Bandstand and appeared on the covers of numerous teen magazines, all on the power of their debut album.
More recently, the song, “I Think We’re Alone Now” had a notable placement in the opening scene of the first episode of Sex Education’s third season on Netflix, introducing the group to a new generation of fans. This Yep Roc Records reissue marks the third release from The Rubinoos on Yep Roc Records.

GRATEFUL DEAD: Dick’s Picks Vol. 1—Tampa Florida 12/19/73
(30th Anniversary 4-LP 180-Gram Limited & Hand-Numbered Vinyl Edition)
STREET DATE: AUGUST 4, 2023
The road to Dick’s Picks Vol. 1 began in 1985, when Grateful Dead archivist Dick Latvala sat bassist Phil Lesh down and virtually forced him to listen to some tapes from older shows. It still took Dick eight years to get the band to agree to release the first volume of Dick’s Picks, and the second one didn’t come till two years later…but Dick’s persistence paid off with a series of live recordings that revolutionized the way bands approach archival material. Now, on the 30th anniversary of its release and the 50th anniversary of the show itself, we at Real Gone Music are proud to reissue Dick’s Picks Vol. 1, remastered for vinyl by Jeffrey Norman from the original analog tapes for the first time ever (the previous LP release was taken from digital files). Right off the bat it’s easy to understand why Dick chose this show; the version of “Here Comes Sunshine” that leads off disc one is pretty much universally considered the best ever, a piece of seamless and gently swinging ensemble work featuring lyrical Jerry Garcia guitar leads that distills the essence of the band’s mythos and appeal. Throw in a great rendition of the rarely-performed “Nobody’s Fault but Mine” that leads into a stellar 16-minute jam that flirts with a full-fledged “The Other One” but dances spacily away, and a moving “Stella Blue” before the “Around and Around” finale and you have another legendary night—in fact, the LAST night—from a great year (1973) of touring….and, as such, the perfect way to begin the long strange trip that is the Dick’s Picks series. Our release actually includes some material (featuring the long-lost Phil Lesh bass solo) that was left off previous iterations of this show, and, with lacquer cutting by Clint Holley and Dave Polster at Well Made Music and pressing on 180-gram black vinyl by Gotta Groove Records, the sound on this 4-LP boxed set—which, again, comes straight from the original analog tapes for the first time—is simply sublime. Original graphics included… limited to 3000 hand-numbered copies!

COWBOY JUNKIES
(BLACK VINYL EDITION)
STREET DATE: AUGUST 4, 2023
Every Cowboy Junkies album is a sonic treat, full of gorgeous guitar tones from Michael Timmons, haunting vocals from Margo Timmins, and beautiful arrangements, and 1996’s Lay it Down is no exception. But there is one big difference between this album and its predecessors: it rocks! And pretty hard, too, particularly on the Crazy Horse-esque Canadian hit “A Common Disaster,” “Just Want to See,” and the Paisley Underground-style title track. The pared-down quartet line-up accounts for some of this tougher approach; but producer John Keane definitely shaped this album’s sound, lending these songs a palpable Athens, GA/R.E.M. vibe that transports the Junkies out of their customary Americana/alt-country territory into a more indie-rock feel. Lay It
Down is a mature album, tackling complex themes (“Come Calling [His Song]” and “Come Calling [Her Song]” tackle the onset of Alzheimer’s from the perspective of an afflicted elderly couple) with the confidence of a band at the peak of its powers. It’s longoverdue for a release on LP, and we at Real Gone Music are proud to present it on pristine black vinyl inside a jacket and printed inner sleeve with lyrics. A great listen.

Could it be you’re falling in love? With six Grammy Award nominations, eighteen Gold and Platinum albums, twenty top 40 Pop singles, and both Pop and R&B chart-toppers, The Spinners more than earned their place in pantheon of American popular song. Working with producer-arranger-conductor Thom Bell, the five-man group consisting of Philippé Wynne, Bobbie Smith, Henry Fambrough, Billy Henderson, and Pervis Jackson (and later, John Edwards) came to define the sound of smooth and sophisticated Philadelphia soul in the 1970s even as they paved the way for disco. With Bell’s singular arrangements and the unmistakable musicianship of MFSB supporting them, The Spinners delivered rich, textured harmonies on hit after hit including “I’ll Be Around,” “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love,” “One of a Kind (Love Affair),” “Sadie,” “The Rubberband Man,” and the No. 1 duet “Then Came You” with Dionne Warwick. From soul and pop to funk and dance, The Spinners transcended the tag of R&B to make a style all their own. On the eve of their long-awaited induction into the 2023 class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records are proud to celebrate The Spinners on The Complete Atlantic Singles: The Thom Bell Productions 1972-1979. This definitive 2-CD anthology presents every one of the quintet’s beloved A- and B-sides helmed by Thom Bell on Atlantic Records during that halcyon period–with each and every song in its original single version (7” only…we had to leave out the 12-inch version of “If You Wanna Do a Dance” for timing reasons). That’s a total of 43 mighty tracks on 2 CDs, more than half of which are unique edits, including 19 Pop hits and 22 R&B hits! Most of these are new to CD, and all are freshly remastered by Mike Milchner at SonicVision from new tape transfers. The Complete Atlantic Singles: The Thom Bell Productions 1972-1979 also includes a deluxe booklet with rare photos and memorabilia. The track-by-track liner notes from The Second Disc’s Joe Marchese draw on a new interview with the last surviving member of the classic Spinners lineup, Henry Fambrough, as well as an unpublished interview with the late Thom Bell (Marchese also contributes a heartfelt tribute to Bell, who was a good friend). The Spinners’ Complete Atlantic Singles is a “One of a Kind” collection for the ages…the pinnacle of sweet ‘70s soul!

LUNA: The Days of Our Nights
(Orange Swirl Vinyl Edition)
STREET DATE: AUGUST 4, 2023
Galaxie 500 co-founder Dean Wareham took his penchant for crafting sneakily hooky indie pop songs with gorgeously melodic, Television-esque guitar work into the ‘90s with his band Luna. The group made four critically-acclaimed albums for Elektra…but in 1999, the label dropped them on the eve of releasing The Days of Our Nights, leaving them without American distribution (the album was eventually released on the short-lived Jericho imprint). As a result, The Days of Our Nights has been hard to find over the years; in fact, this marks the first time it’s been available as a stand-alone vinyl release in the U.S. But it really is a lost gem in their catalog; as Wareham says “Sometimes all you remember is the pain of making a record, or the events swirling around its release, and it’s only years later you come to appreciate the songs. The Days of Our Nights sounds like classic Luna, and we still play a handful of these songs in our live set.”
Highlights include “Superfreaky Memories” (a hit for the band in Spain), “U.S. Out of My Pants!,” “Hello Little One” (written for Noah Baumbach’s film Mr Jealousy), and a beautiful, Velvets-y cover of “Sweet Child O’ Mine” complete with a breathtaking solo by guitarist Sean Eden. Our Real Gone reissue features an orange swirl pressing housed inside a jacket and inner sleeve featuring lyrics. Highly recommended!

This 1989 release from the German band Paradox was a full-fledged concept album, commemorating the 13th century Albigensian Crusade that sought to eliminate the heretical Cathar sect. And truly, no foe could withstand the twin guitar attack, soaring harmonies, and machine-like rhythm section of this band. Other like-minded members of this particular metal horde include Anthrax, Testament, and Exodus, but really, Heresy is a one-of-a-kind record, and a hard act to follow, as this was the last release from Paradox for eleven years. For its U.S. vinyl debut, we’ve pressed up a limited edition of 1000 copies in dark gray “inquisitor’s robe” vinyl, which comes in an album jacket with inner sleeve featuring lyrics. Thinking man’s thrash!

Words For The Dying
First time vinyl repress of a John Cale album or iginally released on the Opal label in 1989, produced by Br ian Eno
“Words For The Dying has at its hear t The Falklands Suite, Cale’s baroque if hear tfelt response to the Anglo-Argentinian War, which finds him setting the poems of his beloved Dylan Thomas to music When building songs around another’s words, the results often sound forced, but Cale does a magnificent job of compressing Thomas’s lyr icism into neat melodic phrases, themselves just components of a vast har monic mega-str ucture scored for the USSR’s Orchestra of Symphonic & Popular Music of Gostelradio. A project that could easily have collapsed under the weight of its own ambition is instead a late master piece, thanks to Cale’s deep-seated compositional genius, and unobtr usive but resonant production from Br ian Eno ” Kiran Sande

To say a lot has happened to Nathan Micay since the release of ‘Blue Spring’ four years ago is an understatement Since the Canada-native turned Berghain-regular made the short jump from Berlin to Copenhagen after the pandemic, he’s been hiding in a derelict studio complex to immerse himself in consecutive acclaimed soundtracks: multiple seasons of HBO/BBC award-winning drama ‘Industry’ , the upcoming post-Trump feature ‘Reality’ starring Sydney Sweeney, and the highly anticipated HBO Original Documentary 'Time Bomb Y2K’ His meteoric rise in the world of scoring has forced a break from the DJ circuit, but new tracks have debuted as VIPs through the sets of respected DJ peers Peach and Avalon Emerson, with clips from this album already closing-out festival stages to packed crowds Having sharpened his proverbial sword he returns with his most ambitious offering yet
‘To The God Named Dream’ takes inspiration from classic RPGs to present a haunted library record for the large language age No longer solely gearing his music for clubs has proven a revelation for Micay The result is a record equally at home in earphones as a PA From the title down to every detail of the artwork, ‘To The God Named Dream’ represents a cursed library record, possessed by an interdimensional intelligence ripping though the sleeve The vinyl art contains an original multiplayer board g

First released back in the fall of 1989, the In Order To Dance album was a compilation LP that pulled together tracks from a select band of electronic producers, pushing the boundaries of the house and electronic music that was in its infancy stage. Released on the R&S Records label, the IOTD series would become pivotal in the development of the electronic music scene at large
The world of music is a constant shape shifting, trend moving behemoth. Style may come and go (and come back around again), stars are made, stars can fall. But the ethos behind In Order To Dance remains the same as it ever has, with a fierce independent spirit, and a pledge to bring forward the next generation of young artists and their music. And so, here we arrive at a new collection, fresh for 2023, and just in time for the labels 40th anniversary year, and with the ardent A&R’ing of label founder Renaat Vandepapeliere, a selection of new tunes is assembled to reinforce the strength and power to be found within music.
Across thirteen tracks, a squad of refreshingly contemporary producers from around the globe are brought together under the In Order To Dance banner. Ushering the series into a new era, new variations on the electronic genre and fresh ideas are fused into a delightfully engaging collection of tracks. There’s deep breakbeats courtesy of UK producer Dharma, smooth and dubby live action from Saytek and complex bass heavy rhythms from Vromm. There’s esoteric electronics from Hyphen, epic piano driven deep house from Dino Lenny and swinging jazzy breaks from Nphonix & Matrika. Paul Roux’s melancholic ‘Bapteme’ unfurls waves of deft pianos and guitar swirls over taunt beats, and a driving electro tone is set on Acidulant’s contribution. Intoxicating rave tropes and hefty breaks come courtesy of Pascal Nuzzo and Adam Antine delivers a wall of sound anchored by shuffling, funky beats on ‘Sortavala’
And to accompany the new wave of In Order To Dance, a series of music videos have been produced. Acclaimed artists and video directors, including Alessandro Amaducci, Ben Marlowe and Gala Mirissa, have all stamped their digital artistic visions onto these stunning compositions, synching audio and visual for a multi -sensory experience!

When Do We Get Paid is now available for the first time since its original release (nearly 50 years ago) with its original gold cover.
Hailed as “powerful” and “Gospel Trailblazers” by The Guardian Pop Matters in America gave it 9/10, while British music magazine Uncut gave it an 8/10, calling it “music you that deserves your attention.”
The three original members of the Staples Jr. Singers are still the core of the band.
They’re going on four generations — and play with their children and grandchildren.
Making a rare appearance, they’re slated to play select shows in Europe in the summer of 2023.
These shows will likely be one of the most emotional performances you will see all year.
Tracklist:
1. GET ON BOARD
2. I KNOW YOU’RE GOING TO MISS ME
3. I’M LOOKING FOR A MAN
4. I’M GOING TO A CITY
5. SOMEBODY SAVE ME
6. TROUBLE OF THE WORLD
When the Staples Jr. Singers, the littleknown family band from Aberdeen, Mississippi originally released their first and only full-length album, 1975’s When Do We Get Paid (Luaka Bop, 2022), they made a handful of copies themselves, which they sold at talent shows and to their neighbors on their front lawn. One of the most striking features of this record was the cover—prayers hands set against a gleaming, divine gold. We never saw a real album in the flesh when we made our version, and when we got the scans of the cover, the gold had washed out to white. So now, for the first time since its original release When Do We Get Paid will once more have a gold cover.
Who are the Staples Jr. Singers, and why do they share a name with that other gospel group you might have heard of, the ones who famously crossed over? The musical family behind the Jr. Singers, the Browns, were a part of a vanguard of gospel soul artists in the 1970s who broke
from tradition to testify with the groove. Excited audiences would flock to them after shows, telling them, “Y’all sound like the Staple Singers, y’all should call yourselves the little Staple Jr. Singers!” And so they did. When they wrote these songs — all of them stone cold soul — they were teenagers, and they had one question on their minds: When Do We Get Paid?
You don’t have to take our word for how great this record is. Take the Guardian’s instead, which calls it “powerful.” Or the Times’ (★★★★), which calls it “full of feeling,” or Popmatters’ (9/10) which says it’s “a recording of fragile beauty and turbulent groove.” Amen.
By the way, the original members of the Staples Jr. Singers are touring Europe in 2023. You won’t want to miss that show—it will be one of the most emotional things you’ll see all year. h

Emil Amos was originally commissioned by the legendary KPM music library to make this music for use in television and film. But after the executive overseeing their experimental wing exited the company, Emil brought Zone Black to Drag City and re-mixed it into a proper full-length album. While the record was originally inspired by old school 70’s television music, like the grim, descending riffs that took us to commercial as the running back strained in anguish for the ball in slo-mo, it became a genuine attempt to reach towards a new kind of library music.
Emil (Grails, OM and podcaster supreme) carves out a much more personal interpretation of what we think of as “music for television” with Zone Black. Taking classic, dark pieces that he grew up with as inspiration, like the “Lonely Man Theme” from the original Hulk TV series, he fantasized an alternate environment where composers were allowed to explore more extreme states of mind, while on much witchier drugs. . .fully separating library music from its outmoded commercial constraints. Imagine Brian Eno recording Another Green World equipped with Madlib’s gear and a much darker sense of humor. or Kafka creating The Castle with a Juno keyboard and sampler instead.
In the spirit of classic synth-based soundtracks like Firestarter or Midnight Express, the instruments narrate the experience. Urban landscapes in noirish chiaroscuro, fatal encounters unfurling beneath the persistent glow of riot lights, last-ditch meetings in pre-dawn discotheques. . .all evoked with synths, harpsichords and mellotrons drifting over drum machines and the arachnoid radiation of FX disappearing up into the darkness. Every track illuminates a different corridor of Emil’s brain, but A.E. Paterra and Steve Moore of ZOMBI periodically step in to contribute sax solos and drum beats to amp the coloration up.
Zone Black is a fully inhabitable world, its episodic narrative divided into an improbable balance between morbid, ambient anthems and insouciant hip-hop instrumentals. Emil hadn’t heard it done quite this way before, so he took it upon himself to make the sound real. And if you don’t hear it in the next, big horror feature (or in a new Zone Black game done up for Xbox, yeah!), it’ll make great mood music for tripping in the bathtub while dreaming of a new horizon of music to take drugs to. Listening to Emil Amos’ Zone Black evokes a variety of distorted, paranoid visions cue it up!

SEJA HERE
IS ONE I KNOW YOU KNOW STREET DATE AUGUST 4TH 2023
The third album from Seja Vogel is both a leap in production and an ode to analogue and the beloved synthesizers she has spent the last 20 years in dedication to. Recorded expertly in her home studio in Brisbane, it is a dense col lection of squelchy synths, drum machines and computer bongos overlaid with her signature mel lifluous vocals The songs on Here is One I Know You Know reflect the broad influence of an artist deeply in love with her instrument and an expansive appreciation for the breadth of synthetic music history coupled with a true talent for sparkling pop songwriting Sometimes in juxtaposition to the luminous melodic vocals, the album’s production swims freely from swirling, celestial dreampop to pulsating psychedelic, krautrock funk, to dark, almost menacing 80’s inspired soundscapes, al l transmitted through the prism of Seja’s personal, often humorous and ultimately delightful songcraft
Here is One I Know You Know is permeated by an overarching warmth To this end Seja says she aimed to use mostly hardware and very little software and embraced both working and wonky gear to make something unique and beautiful ly flawed She recorded the album herself in her home studio obviously singing and playing various and numerous synths on each track as wel l as playing guitars, bass, omnichord, rhodes piano, drum machines, programming, sequencing.
The album welcomes a few close friends playing real acoustic instruments, including Jen Boyce (Bal l Park Music) on bass, Stel la Mozgawa (Warpaint) on percussion, Fred Armisen (SNL, Portlandia) on octobans, Georgia Mooney (Al l Our Exes Live in Texas) on backing vocals, George Browning (Velociraptor) on drums and percussion, Nicole Perry on congas, Chris Farrer (the Quickening) on guitar solos, Conrad Greenleaf (Richard in Your Mind) on bass and Danny Widdicombe (the Wilson Pickers) on pedal steel. Hotmagnets was production assistant and noise merchant
It takes a nimble and accomplished songwriter to span and weave together the range of genre and spectrum of sound tackled on this album On Here Is One I Know You Know Seja has conjured up a world class synth pop feast for the senses

supernowhere - Skinless Takes A Flight
Info:
The majority of the nine slithery songs that comprise supernowhere’s Skinless Takes A Flight were originally cuts that didn’t make their debut Gestalt But after collectively moving across the country from Burlington, VT to Seattle, WA, the scrapped tracks transformed substantially into orid, at times entrancing compositions
The pulsating “Circles” opens the album with lilted re ections on empathy, breathing in midtempo syncopation with subdued guitar tip-toeing around melodic drumming supernowhere’s cast of Meredith Davey (bass, vocals), Kurt Pacing (guitar, vocals), and Matt Anderson (drums) share a collective ambition for maximum interplay and collaborative writing, materializing cleanly knotted compositions that evoke vivid dreamscapes and the profound epiphanies drawn from them (“The Hand”, “Ecdysis”) On upbeat “Dirty Tangle” Davey’s voice glides through Pacing’s angular arpeggiations, carving their own rhythmic lane with their distinctive, descanting singing style
Skinless Takes A Flight notably would not have come to fruition without the help of engineer Dylan Hanwright (mix Gulfer, mem Great Grandpa, I Kill Giants), whom the band met shortly after relocating to Seattle Hanwright offered up his practice space as a temporary rehearsal and writing space during the early pandemic, which in turn gave him intimate familiarity with the music, resulting in an album that was recorded as intimately as it was written Hanwright helped make the little moments shine too, as heard in the eeting vocal harmonies on "Augury", or the spiraling chaos in "Basement Window," a further testament to the collaborative, everyone’s-input-matters nature that characterizes supernowhere’s dizzying yet meditative sophomore record
For Fans of:
Mothers, Great Grandpa, Duster, Palm, orid indie rock, and other Topshelf artists: addy, bad heaven LTD, Boyscott, Crisman, Poppies, Really Big Pinecone, Special Explosion, Us and Us Only, Wished Bone
Selling Points:
• US college radio campaign through Pirate Promotions
• Press campaign handled by Will Osiecki
• Music videos for both singles in the campaign
• Mixed and engineered by Dylan Hanwright (mem Great Grandpa; mix Gulfer)
• LP includes printed dust sleeve, lyric sheet, two download cards, marketing sticker, and an OBI strip

solid red vinyl – exclusive to Redeye
Public Image Ltd. (PiL) announce their 11th studio album and first album in 8 years, End of World. The band began writing and recording End of World in 2018, during their 40th anniversary tour. After The Great Pause, the band regrouped in the studio and “there was just this massive explosion of ideas,” Lydon says. The result finds PiL set to release 13 of the best tracks they have ever written.
Earlier this year, PiL released Hawaii, the most personal piece of songwriting and accompanying artwork that John Lydon has ever shared. The song is a love letter to John's wife of nearly 5 decades, Nora, who is living with Alzheimer’s. A pensive, personal yet universal love song that has resonated with many since its release in January, the song sees John reflecting on their lifetime well spent and in particular one of their happiest moments together in Hawaii. Celebrating their 40-year anniversary in 2018, the band is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and influential bands of all time. PiL ’s music and vision has earned them 5 UK Top 20 singles and 5 UK Top 20 albums. With a shifting line-up and unique soundfusing rock, dance, folk, pop and dub – Lydon guided the band from their debut album First Issue in 1978 through to 1992’s That What Is Not, before a 17 year hiatus. Lydon reactivated PiL in 2009, touring extensively worldwide and releasing two critically acclaimed albums This is PiL in 2012 followed by their 10th studio album What The World Needs Now in 2015, which peaked at number 29 in the official UK album charts and picked up fantastic acclaim from both press and public.

bonnie prince billy keeping secrets will destroy you
DC890
Release Date: August 11, 2023
People, let’s us talk about an album. Bonnie Prince Billy has made a number of them, and heard a bunch more in his time of knowing. He’s found them hewn from moments, admired them as small and accountable the communication of music in emotion, release and catharsis; to edify, to entertain, in two sides and less than an hour. There’s room for albums in everyone’s home, and there’s a place for everyone to listen or space for just one person at a time, when privacy is needed.
Keeping Secrets Will Destroy You presents simply an album made as it was meant to be heard, in a room. The sound of people together a sound we’d so recently feared that we’d lost – playing, communing, strings and wood and keys and voices singing. In the starkness of space, the complexities of life and time are unfurled, then refurled again. As strings ebb and flow with voices and their words, careful hands unwrap the gift of paradox in its many forms and rewrap, for regifting. For giving to everyone.
Keeping Secrets Will Destroy You presents simply, and is sung along easily and happily with in time BUT
Is it family portrait or fairy tale? How does it think the world was made, and will end?
Get your head unstuck from beyond your
thighs and up your crack; find it out for yourself. This is an album. Its business is directing music and commentary your way. If you care about anything and you care to listen, you might like some things on this record. Like, for instance
Time: a killer, like its buddies, love, light, and sound.
Justice: everyone smiles to see it done.
Corporations: sing them down together, don’t let them divide.
Trees: as a way of seeing people (“Willow, Pine and Oak” ) and then, suddenly, as a nightmarish force of vengeance cast against mankind (“THE TREES OF HELL” ).
Family: an inexorable font of life and love and death; mothers, fathers and sons and daughters of all kinds, a gift that grows in all its forms.
Bananas: it is. It really is.
And ever so much more so. This record, you might could call it a bastard child of Master and Everyone and The Letting Go. You might say lots of things. But it you can’t say this ain’t a record that sings and dances, repeatedly, through moments of joy and ter-

ror and together. An album bold enough to roll in the fearsome waves of Makapu’u. Diluting, with ease of expression, the presence of toxic knowledge. Separating chaff from wheat, free of the unneeded gravity of psycho-emotional investment. Aching to do what needs to be done.
Keeping Secrets Will Destroy You was recorded in Louisville by Nick Roeder, featuring Sara Louise Callaway on violin, Kendall Carter on keys, Elisabeth Fuchsia on viola and violin, Dave Howard on mandolin, Drew Miller on saxophone and Dane Waters’ voice. The presence of so many local educators in the band (Sara Louise runs the Louisville Academy of Music, Kendall is the director of music at his Louisville church, Dave runs the Louisville Folk School and Dane is a music educator as well) lends not only to a flow of moments so fluidly encompassing a wide range of musics from classical to traditional Hawaiian and elsewhere, but perhaps even more importantly, to the sense of community, heredity and the triumph of inheritance that is the marrow and life blood of this music.
People and the world, so beautiful and terrible. So much to love and to not like. In the living, Keeping Secrets Will Destroy You enables Bonnie to let it all out, to let go again, and suggest to us all that we get while the getting is good.

“He seems to be building his own American songbook in the pursuit of a robust, whole song for the people.”
“[his] music generally plays around with ancient revered forms of folk and country music that most devotees treat with scholarly solemnity and yet some of his best songs are about getting a blowjob in public, or wishing a shark would eat you. Hailing from Los Angeles with an arsenal of songs as varied as the American landscape itself, PJ WESTERN creates music of contradictions. His tripped out pop-rock psychedelia evokes a haze of 60’s AM radio as heard emanating from someone else’s car window. HERE I GO, Western’s debut album, recorded during the lockdown we all endured, was written in dreams. In visions. Wild but refined, classic but modern. The album is a lot like the man who wrote it: complex, celebratory, grateful. Recorded in LA with the help of some of the finest musicians the city has to offer, HERE I GO offers a perspective of the city as heard through the ears of a precocious outsider – someone who may call the city home, but also can’t quite shake the suspicion he might not belong in the Hollywood Hills surrounding him.

It seems awhile ago, but it wasn’t –not in days and months...whatever time is. But in terms of phases –- we’ve been in and out of all kinds of bags since last summer, right? There’s the us before we heard the rest that 2022 had to offer, and then there’s us today. And coming on seven months later, fresh as it still is, “Hello, Hi” is disappearing in the rearview, like everything else that’s going down the road.
But July 2022, it was in the headlights, dead ahead. We weren’t there yet, we couldn’t know what it would mean, but we were excited to find out. And in L.A., with the release show at Teragram coming up, Ty and the Freedom Band were working and playing to get it together. There’d be a little acoustic set to open things up, which was something different, so a last minute show was drummed up, for Ty and Emmett to work it out in front of some people. And that kind of became the REAL record release show.
Word went out afternoon of the 21st
TRACKS
–- free show tonight in Highland Park –- YEAH! A crowd showed up that evening and crammed in among the vintage clothes to hear some music and share some times. And most of us missed it! But nobody missed it quite like your present scribe did –- I went down, stopped in, said hi –- my lady-friend bought a hat –- and then we split, regretfully, a previous engagement to attend.
What suckers we were! This show clearly ruled, just hearing the five songs included here. With the incredible feelings of the crowd and the spontaneous play in the songs we now know from the album almost miraculously captured to tape (by the capturer himself, Mike Kreibel) at FULL WARMTH, none of us can say we missed it at all anymore –- drop the needle and you’re there, at the launching of sounds that added to the evolution of the world we’ve been living in ever since!
So that’s the story -- “Hello, Hi”, goodbye

The album was a commercial success, reaching No. 25 on the Billboard chart and it remains a fan favorite and an important album in The Cult’s discography.

A Foray Of ‘60s Pop Singles!
Jon & Robin hit the national Top Twenty with the infectious “Do It Again a Little Bit Slower.” Their singles, ever whimsical and glib, encapsulate that mid-60s foot-tapping beat just before it went out of style.
In their strikingly ephemeral existence, Jon & Robin released two albums and over a dozen singles, hitting the national Top 20 once and scoring a couple of regional hits. Behind those innocuous statistics lies a story as bizarre—and ultimately, as tragic—as anything in the annals of popular music.
The recorded output of Jon & Robin is a fascinating aural keepsake of the unique circumstances surrounding its creation. It captures the sound of a unique moment in musical history, when mainstream pop collided with the emerging spirit of psychedelia - all to produce a manner of unlikely yet delightful oddities.

The creation myth behind Temptation weaves a tale of reinvention nearly as fantastic (in both meanings of the word) as that of its lead performer Chaino. The clatter of jungle birds, the chatter of frolicsome monkeys, and the gruff bellow of a majestic lion all conspire to challenge the woofer and tweeter of any listener’s hi-fi.
Since its initial very limited commercial release exclusively on stereophonic reel-to-reel tape circa 1960, this long-player has occasionally made cameo appearances in record shops throughout the years, trickling out in limited numbers in a variety of formats, each iteration under a novel title and a different label.
Temptation: The Exotic Sounds of Chaino is a hi-fi demonstration record of one bit of ironclad truth: the reason Chaino — who relocated to the ultimate exotic paradise in 1999 — is known as the self-styled “genius of African percussion” is that he merely anticipated that the rest of us admirers of his prodigious percussive prowess would soon enough bestow upon him those rightly deserved honors. This album’s long-overdue wider release should create many more such acolytes. And that’s no lie.

HAWKSMOOR Telepathic Heights
11th August 2023
This incredible new release follows a path along the electronic skyways first created by the German/Krautrock electronic pioneers of the 1970s such as Cluster, Ash Ra Tempel, Roedelius and Michael Rother.
Hawksmoor is James McKeown. He first created 'Hawksmoor’ five years ago as an imaginary hauntological soundtrack, inspired by the six Hawksmoor churches in London. Further releases have followed on Environmental Studies, the cassette-only label 'Spun Out of Control', Castles in Space and The Library of The Occult.
For his debut on Soul Jazz Records, Hawksmoor has created a fascinating blend of these two sensibilities – a love of German electronic music of the 1970s alongside the British retrofuturism and cultural memory bank aesthetic of hauntology - Ghost Box, Mount Vernon Arts Lab, Advisory Circle, Focus Group etc.
Using strictly modular synths (Moog Sub37), electronic drum rhythms, and guitars, Hawksmoor creates an electronic landscaped music world that is both new and old, immediately identifiable and yet utterly unique.

Keeping a band together, particularly among the mercurial community of jazz musicians, is no small feat. Other gigs beckon. Life outside of making art takes precedence. It’s a reality that makes the continued existence and progression of Portland quintet Blue Cranes feel so momentous. The ensemble — saxophonists Reed Wallsmith and Joe Cunningham, drummer Ji Tanzer, keyboardist Rebecca Sanborn, and bassist Jon Shaw — has been working together in a variety of formats since 2004, creating a solid body of work that has connected them to both the traditional sounds and the future-minded artists of their chosen genre.
A major shift for the band was to change the way they recorded My Only Secret . Created during the height of the quarantine, Blue Cranes altered their usual way of recording out of necessity, tracking each part separately and in duets across the studio window in Wallsmith’s basement. With some help from longtime cohorts Jason Powers and Todd Sickafoose, Wallsmith built the songs up using the individual components, usually adding Tanzer last in the process, because, he notes, “Ji is such an expressive player and is so in the moment, reacting to what’s happening. I felt like we’d lose all that otherwise.” Even with this temporal separation, says Cunningham, “it was like we were responding to each other. There was communication happening in the same space but at different times. And somehow it sounds like we’re playing live in the same room.”
What will always stay the same with Blue Cranes no matter how much they change as people, as players and as composers is the vibrant emotional core within the music they create. Each song on My Only Secret has a core memory attached to it, whether it is the birth of a child (“Sloan”), a parent’s comfort after the death of a beloved pet (“Rhododendron”), or the agony of the 2016 election results (“Forward”). They feel every moment of every song deeply, something which colors every note they play. “We’re a good emotional band,” says Cunningham. “We can go to that place.” The beauty of My Only Secret, like all of the work Blue Cranes has produced to date, is that they want anyone and everyone to join them.

Chock full of junk store percussion, is this to be considered inspired by call and response old time Gospel, or is it the Gospel for modern folk pop lovers? This inspired recording of strings, mandolin, drums, "whatever you can get your hands on" percussion, guitars, banjo, bass, organ, and open vocal harmonies, is deceptively loose-sound sounding on first listen. As the listener dives deeper into the record it becomes pretty apparent that this musical mongrel of a band is pretty precise, but feels like it was hewn from dirt of the land, and sounds ragged and burnt from a lifetime of tilling. The lyrics are slyly smart, artfully sinister, and built for audience participation... and while the rolling high end mandolin and banjo pluck their ways through countermelodies, there's that perfectly tattered jumble of percussion that sets the knee to bouncin' and the hands together to clap along. Find the lot of players in front of a crowd that is jubilantly singing along with the backing chorus, and you'll find the whiskey drinkers, beer swillers, the devoted Tom Waits fans who wish they could get as close to him as they can to this band. This record was incredibly fun to record.
Singer/guitartist, Ryan Sollee moved to Portland, OR in the fall of 2003 from Alaska with his band at the time The Born Losers, which played a mix of rock and roll and punk. Feeling inspired by the blues, county and gospel music he was listening to, Sollee formed The Builders And The Butchers with other eclectic and like-minded musicians he had met around Portland.
The Builders And The Butchers practiced a few times and played their first shows during the Halloween weekend of 2005. With little expectations, the band was surprised that after only a few shows people were singing along and responding passionately to their music. A lot of these first shows were played downtown outside of bars and clubs.
PRESS QUOTES
“The Builders and the Butchers initially turned heads with their immersive performance style—employing singing in the round sans mic, recruiting the crowd as back-up vocalists, traipsing off into the street in the middle of the closing song. But shorn of the theatrics, the band’s music easily holds its own. The record traces the course of a traditional Butchers set, from stripped-down crowd-grabbing opener “The Night, Pt. 1” to lovely sing-along gospel closer “Find Me in the Air.”
– WILLAMETTE WEEK (Best Local Albums of 2007)
“The original intention of the Builders and the Butchers was to make funeral music, but on the way to the cemetery something changed. Instead of heads hanging low and mournful elegies to the deceased, this local ensemble turned the funeral plot into a graveside party by way of the junkyard. Liberally grabbing from bluegrass, country, and punk—armed with just about any instrument they came across—this band has accidentally stumbled upon something incredible: a very distinctive and interactive way to create and present music.”

The 18th installment of Saddle Creek’s Document series comes from experimental artist claire rousay. The two tracks, Sigh In My Ear and Your First Armadillo are the latest release from this Los Angeles based artist, adding to her extensive discography.
claire rousay’s music zeroes in on personal emotions and the minutiae of everyday life—voicemails, haptics, environmental recordings, stopwatches, whispers and conversations—layering them with electronics in patient, poetic arrangements and exploding their signi cance.
rousay’s collection of eld recordings are layered with broad strings, midi instruments, piano and vocals to create abstracted environments. Melancholic autotune and harmonized vocals featuring Helena Deland melt into the rst track, Sigh In My Ear . While Your First Armadillo enters like the sun rising over a hill on a summer day.
Listening to claire rousay’s collages of everyday life archives pertinent everyday experiences that weave our human experience together.

Acclaimed experimentalists Lawrence English (AUS) and Lea Bertucci (NYC) travel the world on Chthonic, a shape-shifting ambient collaboration. The pair have impressive resumes. In the last five years alone, English has collaborated with William Basinski, Loscii and Merzbow, and Bertucci has, over a decade-plus, released numerous wide-ranging, innovative releases and presented her music at prestigious museums around the world: MOMA, Walker Museum, ReWire, Unsound. Here they branch out into new approaches (trans-hemispheric collaboration) and instruments (Bertucci plays cello, flute, violin and lap steel). The results are deeply compelling and rooted in vastness of geological scale and time. It’s all here – the emotion, the scale, the density, the fear, the wonder, the dirt. Chthonic is for everyone, but if you’re a head, you already know this is a special release. Get in quick while there’s enough wax to go around.

Pressing Info: 180g double LP, splatter vinyl, hand-numbered gatefold sleeve, limited to 666 copies, artwork and remaster exclusive to Fuzz Club Bootlegs. Fuzz Club’s latest official King Gizzard And The Lizard bootleg, ‘Music To Eat Pond Scum And Die To’, is a double LP comprised of the third and fourth volumes of the band’s demos and rarities collections released as part of their official bootlegger series. With demos dating back over a decade, the 26-track double album includes early versions of tracks from ‘Gumboot Soup’ (2017), ‘Willoughby’s Beach’ (2011), ‘Omnium Gatherum’ (2022), ‘Flying Microtonal Banana’ (2017), ‘Infest The Rats’ Nest’ (2019), ‘K.G.’ (2020), ‘Murder Of The Universe’ (2017), ‘Fishing For Fishies’ (2019) and ‘Nonagon Infinity’ (2016). There are also a number of unfinished and unreleased cuts that never saw the light of day, ranging from the thrashing punk of ‘Uncolonise’ to instrumental krautrock jams like ‘German Rock ‘n’ Rolle’ and the Harmonia-channeling ‘Music To Eat Pond Scum To’, by way of cinematic, fantasy-like synth-scapes (‘Party Potential’, ‘Music To Die To’) that almost evoke retro videogame soundtracks. This bootleg is remastered by James Plotkin exclusively for Fuzz Club and arrives as a hand-numbered double LP with new and exclusive artwork by Elzo Durt.

The Bevis Frond - The Long Stuff
Blue Matter Records
2LP LOBE006LP 5055869550260
2CD LOBECD6 5055869550277
'The Long Stuff' was originally issued in 2002 as a CD-only limited edition of 110 copies for members of 'The Bevis Frond Online Community'. It comprised a select batch of lengthy, previously unissued tracks. Some of these were home demos featuring just Frond frontman Nick Saloman on all instruments and vocals. There was also an unused track recorded for the 1995 album ‘Superseeder’ featuring Ade Shaw on bass and Andy Ward on drums. Since then, ‘The Long Stuff ’ has never been re-issued in any format. It is therefore with great pleasure that Blue Matter are re-releasing it for the first time, and now as a vinyl double album and limited double CD. Due to certain circumstances, one of the original tracks could not be used, so that has been replaced by a different unheard demo called ‘Here’s a Little Love Song’. Also, we have added three further unissued tracks, another home demo called ‘Skyline Commander’, plus a leftover song from the sessions for the recently released ‘Little Eden’ album called ‘Yet Another’. Finally, we felt compelled to add a storming 24 minute live version of the classic track ‘Superseded’ recorded at Cardigan’s Doctor Sardonicus festival in 2019. So, to sum up, the first album of this double set features all bar one of the tracks that were previously on the original ‘Long Stuff ’ CD in 2002, while the second album entirely comprises previously unreleased material. The LP will be housed in a full colour sleeve, while the double CD comes in a double wallet. Hopefully, this will be a more than welcome addition to any self-respecting Frond fan’s collection. Available as double vinyl LP & double CD.

Available as LP on green vinyl and limited edition CD. All the albums Blue Matter have issued have given us a real buzz of excitement and inspired a high degree of missionary zeal. However, Eliza Skelton’s ‘The Lookerer’ has really upped the level. This wonderful piece of work serendipitously landed on our decks a few months ago, and we were taken aback by it ’s sheer beauty and haunting musicality. Eliza Skelton is a Brighton -based singer songwriter and accomplished multiinstrumentalist. She is no stranger to the studio having been involved with several bands and artists including Oddfellows Casino, The Desperate Ones, and many more. Now she has produced this magnificent, fully-fledged solo album of beautiful material complete with full band (wherever deemed necessary). Featuring gorgeous songs, great vocals and superb playing, ‘The Lookerer’ deserves to be spinning on turntables around the world. It is housed in a sleeve designed by Eliza, and comes on green vinyl.
