Historic Grammy Win for Koffee is Just the Beginning
N
ineteen year-old reggae/dancehall sensation Koffee just took the Grammy for Best Reggae Album of Year, winning out against legends like Third World and big names like Julian Marley. At just 19, Koffee has already set the stage for her career and is just getting started. This win wasn’t just big, it was historic… Koffee now has the esteem of being the Youngest Reggae Artist Ever and First Female Artist Ever to win grammy for Best Reggae Album. Quite the accomplishment. However the Koffee train has only just left the station. She is about to play her solo act on one of the biggest stages in the United States. She will be performing at Coachella in April, an event that is known as being host to only the best and most popular musical acts in the world each year. Considering this young star just began her career a few years ago, and had a mega hit single Toast in 2018, and now her first ever album, Rapture, won the Grammy, it is easy to say that this young Dancehall singer has entered the Reggae world with a bang. What’s next? We can only imagine, but we are certain it will be amazing. Congratulations on your historic Grammy win and may your future continue to shine just as brightly. ~ by Michael Devine u

CARPETFACE and Roots Reggae Veteran JIMI LYONS.
P
resenting B4theFall - the debut collab single from award-winning international Hip Hop artist / producer CARPETFACE and Roots Reggae Veteran JIMI LYONS
B4theFall is a direct reflection of this uncertain time of desperate societal decline, public outrage at widespread corruption and fear of imminent environmental catastrophe. B4theFall tells the story of how we got into the mess we're in, taking the listener on an emotive journey from the birth of humankind, through our subsequent corruption, greed and separation from nature, to the present-day injustice, hypocrisy and inequality built into our current social systems, with the final anthemic chorus-hook filled with the hope of survival, redemption and prosperity for future generations. In keeping with the environmental and social messages portrayed in the material, and the topical issues of pollution and climate-change being protested about so much worldwide over Autumn, this independent record and music video was entirely produced at “HEADSKILLZ SOUTHWEST ”- an off-grid studio, youth-support centre and community-hub based in SWUK, lovingly built from 100% upcycled materials salvaged from industrial waste destined for landfill. Their unique sound has best been described as “Soundsystem Pop” with strikingly simple and devastatingly powerful conscious chorus-hooks delivered in a refreshingly classic and soulful male duet style hardly seen from any UK act at all in recent decades. Add to this a bunch of eyebrow-raising cuttingedge musical production, fusing banging Hip Hop & Breaks, Funk & Soul, Dub, Dancehall, Lovers' Rock, Roots, Rub-a-Dub, Grime, Dubstep and Junglist vibes - all played in and dubbed out 100% by hand by CARPETFACE, interspersed with conscious Rap-and-Toast verses, and the resulting niche formula contains something for all ages. 8
The duo first knocked heads at UK's One Love Festival 2018 and have spent the last year writing, recording and blending their vibes. 2019 has seen them craft a bank of conscious and uplifting crossover material which has now begun to form into solid LP and EP formats, alongside a veritable arsenal of devastatingly catchy singles clearly destined for A-list radio play. B4TheFall is the first of many anthemic releases to hit the airwaves, and merely a taster of what's to come as CARPETFACE & JIMI LYONS make their indelible mark on British Pop during 2020 as one of the UK's most refreshing crossover musical acts. Available to download and stream on digital stores worldwide on NEWBIAS Records, with their thought-provoking, moving and highly topical music video out the same day via IGTV and YouTube.

PG!BISZFM s a young boy in Spanish Town, Jamaica discovering the music purveyed by his father and uncles in the heydays of dance hall in the 80s, little did Kirk Diamond know the massive imprint those pioneering sounds would one day have on his life work. Now, a rising reggae crossover star, with an artistic vision to connect across all backgrounds and genres. Diamond has quickly escalated to be a chart topping, award winning, live performer, singersongwriter-producer and music industry standout on the global music stage. Kirk migrated to Canada at the age of 10 and currently based in Ontario, Canada, Kirk Diamond and The Movement of Ahryel have gained significant respect and admiration as an up and coming reggae recording artist in the country and beyond. His sound built on the foundation of classic roots and pop music distinguishes him as a new school reggae heavyweight with staying power that audiences and critics find refreshing, gratifying and inspiring, just as the artist himself. In the Spring of 2017, Kirk released his debut EP Greater, “a story of my musical journey to this point with an optimistic look on what's next to come," said Diamond of the project. The EP’s eponymous song hit the #1 spot by the Fall, running 6 weeks consecutive with a total of 42 weeks on the chart. Greater would gift Diamond with his second Juno award nomination and his first Juno Award win for Reggae Recording of the Year in 2018, almost a full year after the song’s journey through the public sphere. KOBEBRYANT Legendary Basketball Player, Died at age 41 obe Bryant has been a household name for the last two decades. Just like Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neil, and LeBron James. This wasn’t by accident. He was one of the greatest Basketball players if not one of the greatest athletes of all time. He played for the Los Angeles Lakers for his entire career. Which shows one of the other traits Kobe was known for aside from his superior athleticism, and that is loyalty. Outside of basketball he was a loyal and devoted father, who always made time for his daughters. And even though he had A-list celebrity status, he still made time for mundane things, like school functions and coaching his daughter’s school basketball team. Kobe was tragically taken from the world and his family in a helicopter crash in the hills of Calabasas, CA on Sunday, January 26th 2020. Bryant was known to frequently travel by Helicopter because of the convenience and necessity with his busy schedule. This tragedy was unfortunately expanded as press got details from first responders and the world learned that not only was Kobe Bryant lost forever, but so was his 13 year old daughter, Gianna. Additionally one of Gianna’s basketball teammates and friend Alyssa Altobelli and her mother and father Keri and John were also on board and did not survive the crash. Friend and assistant coach to Kobe Bryant, Christina Mauser and Ara Zobayan, the helicopter pilot, were also declared dead at the crash site. This tragedy took 9 lives and devastated 4 families. Kobe Bean Bryant was most well-known for his incredible talent on the basketball court. He won five NBA Championships, was a two-time NBA Finals MVP, was 2008 NBA Most Valuable Player and was on the NBA All-Star Team 18 times and won two Olympic Gold medals as part of the US Team and he is ranked 4th place of all time in NBA scoring. He was clearly one of the greatest NBA players and athletes of all time. Bryant retired from the NBA at the end of the 20152016 season. continues on page 14

One of the Greatest Drummers of All Time….Lost his Battle With Cancer. eil Peart, world renowned drummer of Rush; lost his quiet battle with Brain Cancer on Tuesday, January 7th, 2020. Neil was never one to be in the limelight, and had always been a secretive person. But only his family, band mates and closest friends knew that he was battling a deadly form of Glioblastoma for the last three and a half years.
N
Peart was a rebellious teenager and grew up in Port Dalhousie a suburb in Toronto, Canada. He was known for being different. He permed his hair and wore a cape and purple boots while travelling on the city buses in Toronto. But differences aside, he was a savant when it came to drumming and creating music. Rush is a world renowned Canadian Rock Band, that has been on the stages and airwaves of the world since 1974, but it was Neil’s drum solos and Lyrics that he wrote for the songs that vaulted Rush into the history books as one of the most famous and influential rock bands of all time. Right up there with Hendrix, Van Halen and the Rolling Stones. Rush was known for its sci-fi and futuristic lyrics and those came from Neil’s interest in Ayn Rand. Neil Peart was part of Rush since their first year in the business. They had just released their first album, when he replaced the original drummer and became the Drummer and Lyricist for the Rush that we know and love. He joined singer-bassist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson and together they were Rush for the last 45 years. Songs like Tom Sawyer and The Spirit of Radio can be heard on any respectable Rock radio station every single day as part of their lineup. Neil Peart was shy and wary of the limelight and as a result, he is one rocker that you never saw in the tabloids during his 45 year career. Rather than party and hang with groupies, he would often be found on the tour bus, reading a stack of books. Towards the latter part of his career he stayed further from the spotlight, by following the Tour Bus on his motorcycle and leaving shortly after his performances to go home if close 18
by, or to the hotel of that night. He was just about living for his music, and wasn’t in it for fame and that sets him apart from what people knew of the rock stars in that era. He was just a guy doing something that he loved to do, something he was born to do. Neil Peart, the world has lost the beat and tempo that poured from your soul. You will be missed. ~ by Michael Devine u

Prime Ministers Celebrate the Impact of Jamaica's Culture on Japan with Mighty Crown
Japan's Prime Minister Shinzō Abe, Mighty Crown's Sami T, Jamaica's Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Masta Simon are pictured following a performance during his recent visit to Japan.
T
he internationally renowned Mighty Crown sound system has amassed quite the impressive list of accomplishments over the years. But their latest milestone is surely the most phenomenal of them all! Quite the honor, the "Far East Rulaz" were hand picked by Japan's Prime Minister Shinzō Abe to attend and perform at an exclusive, invite only dinner welcoming Jamaica's Prime Minister Andrew Michael Holness, ON, MP to Japan. Introduced to the visiting Holness as "The 1999 World Clash Champions" by Prime Minister Abe, the political leaders took no time to chat with Mighty Crown about their legacy and how much Jamaican music and culture has impacted their personal and professional lives. The popular sound system emphasized that Jamaica's beloved Reggae and Dancehall have left an indelible mark on Japan. As the first sound system/DJs to perform at Prime Minister Shinzō Abe's home, Mighty Crown had a lot to say about the opportunity. "It's such a big deal to be in the company of Japan and Jamaica's top political leaders. Our hard work really shines and comes full circle with this honor." "To have the Prime Ministers call the name Mighty Crown from their mouths and salute us was just crazy," Sami T adds.
Mighty Crown's Sami T greets Japan's Prime Minister Shinzō Abe and Jamaica's Prime Minister Andrew Holness during Holness' recent visit to Japan.
Much to their credit, Mighty Crown has made it their mission to unify Japan and Jamaica through music over the course of their long running career. Building a reputable sound system, business and brand on their love of Reggae and Dancehall music, Mighty Crown has continually promoted Jamaica's indigenous culture in Japan and through out the world. Their annual stadium show, themed concerts, sound clashes in conjunction with Irish and Chin, and events feature the best of the best of Jamaican artists and sounds. Mighty Crown culminated their attendance with an explosive set of Reggae and Dancehall music, playing selections from Bob Marley, Beres Hammond and Richie Stephens. And they musically introduced Prime Minister Abe to the "Crown Prince of Reggae" Dennis Brown. But it was when the "Far East Rulaz" dropped Koffee's anthem "Toast" that both Prime Ministers began dancing and proceeded to the DJ booth, which is how the group photo came about. The night's climactic moment genuinely demonstrated how music can transcend cultural boundaries. Prime Minister Holness’ visit to Japan commemorates a vibrant cultural exchange and mutual respect the two countries have for each other. Japan is set for a massive international presence, as they will host the 2020 Summer Olympics. by Irish and Chin u 21
