Jah9 he shift in Jah9’s world and story, began at an early age of 9 when she moved from her home in Falmouth, to live in the urban wilds of Kingston. Born Janine Cunningham, she later came to accept the childhood nickname Jah9. The powerhouse vocalist we have come to know and love, only emerged from her musical cocoon post initiation into the literary world through poetry. Her love for the written word helped her to channel some of the dynamic thoughts she began to have later on in her life, during her tenure at the University Of The West Indies. Here, she was able to nourish the growing consciousness instilled in her by her father the preacher and her mother, the social worker. She found kinship in the like minds of the Rastafari brethren she came to know during her time there, where she developed a keen reverence for Haile Selassie I. She became a staple in the underground poetry scene by 2009, where she also fell in love with the hypnotic sounds of dub in roots reggae music. She started to write songs to these instrumentals where she felt confident her words would have room for digestion, and they found eager encouragement. Her first demos were recorded with keyboardist Sheldon Bernard, and caught the attention of the legendary Beres Hammond who later helped to develop her recording technique. 9 recorded her first two singles with the help of Donovan Bennett of Don Corleon Records in 2010 to critical acclaim. She would later release her debut album titled “New Name” in 2013, produced by iconic selector Rory ‘Stone Love’ Gilligan, which spoke to the core of her philosophy as a human being and artist. There she was able to project the messages she unearth throughout her spiritual journey. “New Name” was voted album of the year by AchisReggae.com, warmly described as “the superb sum of its parts: a straight cultural roots album”. 9 has performed with her band, the Dub Treatment, on stages and music festivals all over the world since then and even incorporates her popular rhythm based experience called Yoga on Dub, to supplement. Her words are a reflection of her life and the ways she chooses to direct her energies. All her pursuits, whether music or otherwise, culminate into a levity, a mission to heal, nourish and grow through her powers as a woman, yogi, poet, artist and activist. In 2016 Jah9 released her follow up effort titled simply “9” which cemented her innovative Jazz on Dub style. 9 continues to push the boundaries of the world she was born in as she forges her path. The next steps in her journey are currently being curated for the staging of her next great body of music. by VPRecords u

GENERAL B

B

. David Parkes, 1972, Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. Parkes was raised in the notorious ghetto areas of Seaview, Waterhouse, Rose Lane and Waltham Park and was inspired by General Trees to chat in the dancehall. It was through his connection with Trees that he became known as General and later added the B as he was considered the baby of the sound who was distinguished by his "turbine whine". In 1994, General B joined forces with Ghost and Roundhead in the Monster Shack Crew. Although considered one of the crew, General B's songwriting skills enabled him to maintain a high profile individually with hit tunes such as, "God Heart" (a duet with Jason Sweetness), "Nicky", "Bad Inna New Clothes" and "Scream" (his biggest solo hit). In the late 90s, General B recorded on sessions in New York, USA, that resulted in the hip-hop release, "If Me Did Know". At the start of the millennium he recorded in sessions for the second Monster Shack Crew album and with Roundhead released "True Lover". A series of hits followed including dancehall favourites, "Shock Him Up", "Jump", "NVious", "Ah Me Dis" and "When We Roll". By the end of 2000, General B established his solo career with the hardcore ragga anthem, "The Business", and he is widely considered as the man who inspired younger DJs to serve their apprenticeship as a part of a crew. u 10

BOB ANDY Jamaican reggae vocalist dies at aged 75

B

ob Andy (born Keith Anderson) emerged as a solo star in 1966 with the smash hit "I've Got to Go Back Home", a song which has become a much-loved anthem for Jamaicans. He had served his singing and songwriting apprenticeship with the legendary vocal group the Paragons which he founded with Tyrone (Don) Evans and Howard Barrett, later joined by John Holt. The Paragons had several hits for producer Coxsone Dodd including the Number One "Love At Last", penned by Bob. As one of Studio One's leading lights, Bob worked closely with Jackie Mittoo on many of the label's seminal sounds. Besides writing songs for himself which have become reggae standards - "Feeling Soul", "My Time", "Going Home", and "Too Experienced", to name just a few - Bob contributed hits for many of the other artists there. In 1970, international recognition came when Bob and Marcia Griffiths recorded Nina Simone's "Young, Gifted and Black", which sold half a million copies in the UK and Europe, and still receives frequent airplay today. Bob & Marcia became household names, appearing on Top of the Pops and touring extensively. They had another UK Top Ten single and two albums for Trojan Records.

18

During the early 70s Bob continued his solo recordings; "You Don't Know" and "Life" are two songs from this time which hold a special place in the hearts of his British fans. After the duo split in 1974, Marcia became one of Bob Marley's IThrees, and Bob's singles "Fire Burning" and "Check It Out" struck a responsive chord with Jamaicans in the new social consciousness of the Manley era. In the middle seventies Bob joined the newly formed Soundtracs label in Jamaica as their A&R manager. He and Marcia reunited for the Kemar album, which remains the definitive Bob & Marcia album and has been released as Really Together on Bob's own label. Bob was one of the first Jamaican artists to establish his own publishing company, Andisongs, and served as one of the prime movers in the attempt to establish a Caribbean Copyright Organisation. 1978 saw the release of Bob's album Lots of Love and I, which amongst many excellent tracks contains the classics "Ghetto Stays in the Mind" and "Feel the Feeling." In the same year he traveled to Cuba to perform at the 11th World Festival of Youth and Students. Then began a five year absence from the music scene as Bob became increasingly involved in acting. He took lead roles in several theatre productions, and in 1979 starred in the Jamaican feature film Children of Babylon. In 1983 Bob was welcomed back to the reggae charts with a UK number one single, "Honey", followed by a Number One album, Friends. For these and subsequent releases he formed his own label, I-Anka, in Jamaica and the UK. During 1985 Bob toured California, appeared at the Youth Festival in Moscow, and headlined the first Japanese Reggae Sunsplash. The Retrospective album was released in 1986 (1987 on Heartbeat/Rounder Records in North America) to widespread critical acclaim. It provides a missing historical link between the Studio One masterpiece Bob Andy's Songbook and his more recent work.

In November 1987, Bob assumed the post of A&R and Promotions Director for Tuff Gong (the group of companies founded by Bob Marley). In this capacity he represented Tuff Gong Music at many industry functions in Jamaica and abroad. He produced artists such as Nadine Sutherland, Ernest Wilson and Tyrone Taylor, as well as new talent. Bob's stay at Tuff Gong provided him with many opportunities to express his life-long desire for higher standards in Jamaican music, both in its business operations and in the quality of its musical output. Freely, released on I-Anka in late 1988, comprised tracks recorded throughout the middle 80s. It received rave reviews and spent many months in the reggae charts. Assuming once again his role of Jamaican music pioneer, Bob spent six months in Australia in 1989, conducting workshops and playing with local musicians. On December 13th 1989, he joined other leading reggae artists at Gdansk Shipyard in Poland in an Anti-Apartheid concert sponsored by Solidarity to celebrate the progress of the world's liberation movements. During the 90s Continental Records, one of Brazil's largest record companies, issued a Bob Andy compilation album, and several of Bob's albums received Japanese releases. Bob recorded the album Hanging Tough for producer Willie Lindo at his Heavy Beat Studios in Miami. The set was released in 1997 on VP Records and included the inspirational singles "Love This Life" and "Die No More." Formal recognition of Bob’s musical contributions has flowed in from many sources during the last two decades. Rockers Magazine honoured Bob with a Lifetime Achievement Award in Kingston in 1989, as did the Canadian Reggae Music Awards in Toronto in 1991. Bob’s song “Fire Burning” received the JAMI Award for Song of the Year in 1991. In 1997 he was named as one of the music’s “Living Legends” at the Reggae/Soca Awards in

Miami and was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the 1999 Bob Marley Day Festival in Southern California. He received the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Jamaica in 2003. The 90s and the first decade of the new millennium have found Bob continuing to give stunning performances in Europe, Japan, Jamaica, Canada and the US. In addition to his solo performances he has taken part in a series of special reunion concerts with Marcia Griffiths. He has added new classics to his repertoire, such as the wellreceived singles “Zion”, “There Is A God” and “Ska Music (is Jah Music)”. In early 2005, Bob made his first journey to Africa. He performed at the Bob Marley 60th birthday concert in Addis Ababa to an audience of several hundred thousand, and also sang at the Ethiopian President’s Palace. During a visit to Shashemane in the weeks following he gave benefit concerts for the community. More recent compositions include two successful singles recorded by Bob for the Altafaan label: “Create Our History” with Luciano (2006), and “Almighty Dolla” (2007). Jamaica conferred its Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander (CD) on Keith ‘Bob Andy’ Anderson in October 2006 for his contributions to the development of reggae music. It has often been noted that the mark of a great artist is the continued production of notable works throughout his lifetime. A veritable explosion of cover versions of Bob’s songs and rhythms has already introduced a new generation of fans across the globe to his music. Bob’s audience will have much to savour as they become familiar with his latest compositions, which only serve to further enhance one of the most distinctive and distinguished bodies of work in Jamaica.u

KENNY ROGERS Legendary Singer, dead at 81

K

enny Rogers, legendary folk singer and country music sensation died peacefully of natural causes late on Friday, March 20th. He had ended his farewell tour a year ahead of schedule in 2017 due to failing health and he eventually succumbed to his condition this year, while under hospice care. Kenny Rogers is known throughout the world for many things, but most famous for his song and alter ego, The Gambler. Kenny Rogers began his career in the 1950’s. He started out with the group, The Scholars, who released the song “The Poor Little Doggie.” In the late 1950’s Roger’s released a few solo songs, including his first minor hit, “That Crazy Feeling.” Soon after Kenny joined Bobby Doyle in his jazz group, and later in 1966 he joined the folk band The New Christy Minstrels, where he played Double Bass, Bass Guitar and was a singer. Healthy Eating AT THE HEART OF THE MATTER by Fazia Khan Parmar

F

irst and foremost I hope that you and your families are well and staying healthy. As many of us are getting used to social distancing and spending more time at home, it gives way to more opportunities for home cooking. If you are like me, you own a slow cooker that tends to collect dust in some corner until a rare occasion to use it comes by. I personally have not yet gotten comfortable with the idea of leaving my slow cooker on all day while I’m out to work. I’ll more likely to use it on weekends where I’m generally home and can monitor the progress throughout the day. My recipe for you this month is a crock pot winner and sure to comfort everyone in the family. This meal will fill and warm the belly and is also very economical to stretch that dollar further. Enjoy and take care!

Instructions: 1. Scatter onion in the bottom of a large slow cooker then top with chicken. Season with oregano, salt, and pepper. 2. Pour over soup and broth then add thyme and bay leaf. Cover and cook on high until the chicken is cooked through, about 3 hours. 3. Discard thyme and bay leaf, then shred chicken with two forks. Stir in celery, carrots, peas, and garlic. Cut biscuits into small pieces, then stir into chicken mixture. Spoon liquid over any biscuits at the top. 4. Cook on high until vegetables are tender and biscuits are cooked through, stirring every 30 minutes, about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes more.
