CVKV!CBOUPO uju Banton is unequivocally the greatest reggae artist to have ever commanded a microphone. The man born Mark Anthony Myrie is a living legend, world class deejay, breaker of records set by the honorable Robert Nesta Marley, revolutionary and ambassador of the Jamaican sound called “Dancehall.” Born in the Kingston slum of Salt Lane, he’s made a career of teaching music lovers how to love and be loved; how to cherish women; and how to march toward triumph in spite of setbacks; how to Bogle; how to live better. “Reggae music’s mission is to uplift, educate and eradicate negativity from the minds of the people globally,” says Banton. “I won’t let that change. Today, after nearly three decades of dominance, Buju is primed to pen his next chapter. The icon has recently aligned his own Gargamel Records with the house of another GOAT: Roc Nation. After an eightyear hiatus, he is set to continue teachingvia his eleventh studio album, Upside Down 2020. Aglobal audio experience sure to please his oldest fans and welcome in a new faithful. Before the sonic feast begins, Buju says grace, requesting forgiveness for all on “Lamb of God.” Despite the expected trials and tribulations inherited whenwearing a crown, beautiful standards like “Lovely State of Mind” and the sweet talker “Appreciated” reveal that Buju’s lion heart is as ruby red as ever. The vintage genius of “Good Time Girl” will bring worlds of all color and age closer. The peace rally that “Murderer” began in 1995 continues with thefirstsingle “Steppa,” offering a best-foot-forward alternative to the “Shotta.” The record’s cinematic video surpassed one

million YouTube views in less than a month. The secondsingle, “Trust,” produced by longtime Buju collaborator Dave Kelly (Bounty Killer, Beanie Man), aims to wakeup our digital-dependent society. The album’s equator is formed by its future singles.“Cherry Pie”and“Call Me” are as hot as Libya, andfeatures a fantastic performance from Pharrell Williams and British princess Stefflon Don, while “Memories” may be the boiling point. Buju’s pen is gorgeous as his lyrics wed perfectly with the incomparable vocals of John Legend. Banton refers to his life as a “rollercoaster” for which the poetic realism of his new album speaks directly. Additionally, the brilliant composition is a cry out to a younger generation so desensitized that it normalizes the unhealthy. “There was a mantra in Jamaica that went, We don’t kill champion, we raise them.” Buju Banton was raised by two hardworking parents as theyoungest of 16, which includes 15 sisters. His mother gave her chunky toddler with the insatiable appetite the nickname “Buju” (a breadfruit in Jamaica). Banton, which represented a fierce deejay, was added on later. By age 16, Buju was already recording his first song (“The Ruler”). His next underground hit, “Stamina Daddy,” would spark his career, initially becoming the title track of his 1992 debut album (the album was later repackaged and retitled Quick). Buju’s massive follow-up Mr. Mention, which revolutionized dancehall with classics “Batty Rider,” “Man Fe Dead,” and the early feminism of “Love Me Brownin” and “Love Black Woman,” dropped the same year allowing Banton to break Bob Marley’s record for #1 hits. BUGS BUNNY The Rascally Rabbit Turns 80

B

ugs Bunny aka The Rascally Rabbit aka The Stinker aka Wascally Wabbit has turned 80 on July 27th. Yep, he is one old bunny rabbit. He has entertained us, our children, our parents and our grandparents. I don’t think there is a more iconic name in all of Hollywood. I would wager that if you travelled to the farthest reaches of the planet and said the words Bugs Bunny or What’s Up Doc?, you would immediately see a smile and an expression of fondly remembering something Bugs did on screen. Bugs Bunny has been the image of America in propaganda cartoons during World War II, Vietnam and the Cold War. He has been an image of political influence being portrayed as every type of elected official possible from mayor to president; he has been a famous basketball star, playing side by side with Michael Jordan in Space Jam, and soon to relive that role with Lebron James in Space Jam 2. Over this 80 year spread Bugs Bunny has run the gambit, from being a symphony conductor, a politician, a baseball player, basketball player, football player, an astronaut, a martian, a hunter, a housewife, a husband, a dog and of course sometimes he even acts like a bunny. If we were to make up a game calling out different jobs, or social situations, I would be hard pressed to find one that Bugs Bunny did not portray over the years. Heck I have even seen Bugs wearing a mask during the Covid 19 pandemic in various memes and psa’s. Bugs Bunny is the definition of Jack of all trades, but he is a master of one… making people smile and laugh. The only thing Bugs Bunny is known for, more than being a classic entertainer, is his role as the ultimate trickster. He is the biggest trickster the looney toons universe has known. Whether it was shooting Daffy Ducks beak off, or knocking backwards with a hammer, or teasing a mad scientists’ monster, or out tinkering a gremlin, or confusing Marvin the Martian, or befuddling Elmer Fudd and Porky Pig, or even tormenting poor old Yosemite Sam. Now, don’t get me wrong, they all had it coming and none of the antics were unprovoked. But some were extreme, like tying a stick of dynamite in Yosemite Sam’s beard and pulling his hat down over his head while kicking him off of cliff. It is great to see that in a world where so much has been Cancelled and so much has been censored, that the pure

14

slapstick comedy of the Three Stooges, Wiley Coyote and Bugs Bunny has stood the test of time. I can’t imagine my childhood without the slapstick comedy of looney toons and I am grateful that they are still here today and going strong for my children to enjoy and hopefully, my children’s children. In this world where everything on TV is so real or realistic, whether it is trash TV reality shows, or fantasy made to look ultra-realistic like The Walking Dead, or medical dramas. The world needs things like Bugs Bunny’s antics that are so over the top and ridiculous, that there is no room for misinterpretation, anyone watching knows that it is simply pure unadulterated fun and entertainment. Thank you for the decades of entertainment, and dedication to providing laughter to everyone. Happy 80th Birthday Bugs Bunny and may you have 80 more. What’s Up Doc? By Michael Devine u

Charlie Daniels The Only Fiddler to Ever Beat the Devil Dies at 83

Of course you know I am talking about Charlie Daniels. One of the greatest fiddle players of all time and the legendary country music star whose most famous song, The Devil Went Down to Georgia was no. 1 on the billboards in 1979 and can still be heard in every American Bar and on many radio stations till this very day. Charlie Daniels lost his life on July 6th at the age of 83, when he suffered a severe stroke. A legend was truly lost that Monday morning. Charlie Daniels was best known for the aforementioned song, but was in no way a one hit wonder. His band called The Charlie Daniels Band had three top 10 hits, including Simple Man and Drinkin’ My Baby Good-Bye and of course The Devil Went Down to Georgia; a song that earned him a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance. Other wellknown songs included Long Haired Country Boy, The Legend of Wooley Swamp and I’ll Fly Away which earned him a Grammy nomination in 2005 for Best Country Instrumental Performance. Charlie Daniels had a sound that transcended generations and it wasn’t just his own works that the world enjoyed. He had many collaborations that many people never really think about, but enjoy none the less. He started his music career in the 1950’s. He was a talented fiddle and banjo player and a

18

guitarist. He formed a country music / rock band and began his journey. Along the way he worked with some of the other legendary artists of the time. He co-wrote It Hurts Me with Elvis Presley, He played instrumentals for Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, and he played the fiddle in acts for Hank Williams Jr. and the Marshall Tucker. In 1971 his first solo album was released and in 1973 his first big hit called Uneasy Rider hit the airwaves. Throughout the rest of the 70’s he did a lot of the mentioned collaborative works, and in 1979 he staked his place history with The Devil Went Down to Georgia. From there he toured with his own Charlie Daniels Band and also with the Marshall Tucker Band for the next four decades. In 2008 he was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry and in 2016 he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Up until the day of his death Charlie was active and in touch with fans he had a 2020 tour scheduled with the Marshall Tucker Band and every day he was active on twitter starting each day with a prayer to share with his fans and friends and then to speak whatever was on his mind including his support for America, our troops and our dedicated police officers. Charlie Daniels you have led a storied career, wrote some legendary songs and will live on forever in the airwaves. You will be missed, rest in peace. By Michael Devine u

Malik B. One of the Original Members of The Roots Died at 47 Malik Abdul Baset, aka Malik B. died on July 29th at the young age of 47. No details of his death have been release yet. He was best known for his work with the group The Roots. The Root group was created in 1987 by Ahmir Thompson aka Questlove and Tariq Trotter aka Black Thought. But even though the band began in 1987 Malik is considered a founding member because the he joined in 1991 and the first album was released in 1993 called Organix. It was in 1991, when Malik B. met Questlove and Black Thought at Millersville University that The Roots was truly born. As matter of fact, when he first joined the group was called the “Square Roots” and later became known as The Roots when their first album dropped. Following the immediate success of Organix the group began touring and became a smash sensation all across Europe. Being a blend of Hip-hop, Rap, Jazz, and Reggae they were loved by all who heard them. Malik B. went on to create three more albums with The Roots; Do You Want More in 1995, Illdelph Halflife in 1996 and Things Fall Apart in 1999. A song from the last album Things Fall Apart called You Got Me earned the group their first Grammy in 2000. After his departure from the roots in 2000, Malik went on to release several solo productions including the EP Psychological in 2006 and two full albums titled Street Assault in 2005 and Unpredictable in 2015. During that time away, he still maintained strong “roots” with The Roots and returned as a featured artist on The Roots albums Game Theory in 2006 and Rising Down in 2008. Malik B.’s career was filled with success but he was never one for the spotlight and was known for being rather elusive, as far as the world was concerned. There were no headlines about Malik B. outside of his music. But one thing is certain he was adored by his fellow Roots members even after his departure. In a public statement Black Thought and Questlove had this to say upon learning of his death from family members. “It is with heavy hearts and tearful eyes that we regretfully inform you of the passing of our beloved brother and long time Roots member Malik Abdul Basit. May he be remembered for his devotion to Islam, his loving brotherhood, and his innovation as one of the most gifted MCs of all time. We ask that you please respect his family and extended family in our time of mourning such a great loss.” Black Thought later posted the following heartfelt message on Instagram. “We made a name and carved a lane together where there was none. We ressurected a city from the ashes, put it on our backs

and called it Illadelph. In friendly competition with you from day one, I always felt as if I possessed only a mere fraction of your true gift and potential. Your steel sharpened my steel as I watched you create cadences from the ether and set them free into the universe to become poetic law, making the English language your bitch. I always wanted to change you, to somehow sophisticate your outlook and make you see that there were far more options than the streets, only to realize that you and the streets were one... and there was no way to separate a man from his true self. My beloved brother M-illitant. I can only hope to have made you as proud as you made me. The world just lost a real one. May Allah pardon you, forgive your sins and grant you the highest level of paradise.” It is clear that Malik B. was much more than a star, an entertainer, a musician, an artist… he was a best friend, a motivator, a partner and a brother, and above all else he was a devout Muslim. May Allah bless you always and forever Malik Abdul Baset. You will be missed by all and remembered forever in the incredible musical works of art that you helped to create. #MalikB #TheLegendaryRootsCrew By Michael Devine u 19

Regis Philbin Iconic Morning Show Host died at age 88

The longtime host of the most famous Morning Show on TV has died. Regis Philbin lost his life on July 24th died of natural causes due to Coronary Artery Disease. I don’t think there is a household in America that does not know Regis Philbin, whether it is from his 23 years as host of The Morning Show and Live! or from his hosting of the first game show with a million dollar prize, Who Wants to be a Milliionaire. Born and raised in the Bronx in New York, part of what made Regis so famous and iconic was his sometimes abrasive New York way of speaking. Many talk show hosts try to hide their roots and sound like “joe average” or “mr. professioinal” but Regis always kept it real and talked from the cuff. Something that made him such a favorite in many hosueholds. After graduating High School he moved on to earn a sociology degree from Notre Dame and something many people know is that he was die hard Fighting Irish fan, every college football season this became apparent and was often worked into segments on aire whenever he could. Regis got his Television debut on a local talk show in San Diego in 1961 called The Regis Philbin Show then in 1967 he became a sidekick on the very successful Joey Bishop Show. Over the next several years he hosted many other regional talk shows including A.M. Los Angeles and Regis Philbin’s Saturday Night in St. Louis, but his big break came when he moved back to New York in 1983 to Host the nationally syndicated “The Morning Show” which he cohosted with Kathy Klee Gifford. The show was later renamed Live! with Regis and Kathy Lee. Later the co-host seat wne to Kelly Ripa and the show became Live! with Regis and Kelly. For 23 years he was the host of the most 20

popular morning show on television. During that time he also became the prime time host of Who Wants to be a Millionaire for its first 3 seasons, and he was also the host of the first season of the television phenomenon America’s Got Talent. Needless to say, Regis led an incredible career. He earned a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host in 2001 and 2011 and an Emmy for Outstanding Game Show Host. He earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003 and was given a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Daytime Emmy Awards in 2008. Regis was laid to rest in a private ceremony at the Notre Dame Campus, his alma mater. There has been an outpouring of love and support from fellow stars and fans from all over the world. His family posted publicly that anyone that would like to show their support is welcome to make donations to Regis Philbins two favorite charities. The New York City Food Bank at www.foodbanknyc.org and the Center for the Homeless in South Bend at www.cfh.net. Mr. Philbin will be dearly missed but also never forgotten. By Michael Devine u

Olivia de Havilland The Last Surviving Actress From The Golden Age of Cinema Has Died at 104 Olivia de Havilland was known for many things.

She was an

activists for Actors rights, she had a sibling rift that made many headlines due to its secrecy, she had a dance card that was the envy of every housewife of the era, but most of all she was known as the Iconic co-star playing Scarlett O’Hara’s sister-in-law in Gone with the Wind and then starring and co-starring in countless incredible cinema pieces in the 30s and 40s. Her legendary beauty and incredible talent earned her many roles in the films that made the Golden Age of the Silver Screen so “Golden.” Gone With the Wind after all was the highest grossing movie to hit the cinema’s in all of history when inflation is taken into account. The film earned $393.4 million dollars in 1939, when adjusted for inflation that number is sitting at almost $3.8 billion. Olivia Mary de Havilland was born July 1st 1916 in Tokyo, to British parents. Eventually the family after much travelling around settled in Saratoga, California. Her acting debut came when she was working as a understudy for Gloria Stuart in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Hollywood Bowl. Ms. Stuart ultimately bowed out of the part and Olivia took over the role of Hermia and thus began her stage debut in the Shakespeare classic. This event led to her contract with Warner Bros. and the 1935 film version of the same play. That same year she co-starred with Errol Flynn in Captain Blood. The producers loved this pairing and went on to make eight more movies with these two in the starring roles as the perfect couple. In reality, they both fell for each other at various times during their career, but Flynn was known for doing childish pranks to get the attention of female stars, including one prank where he place a live snake in the panties of Oliva prior to a costume change on set. In various interviews over the year Ms. De Havilland was quoted as saying “that he was her first love but it never happened because she realized childish pranks should not be the bridge to any woman’s heart.” Olivia had to fight with Warner Bros. to be able to work in Gone With the Wind since it was being filmed with another production company. She eventually got the green light and did the film that became the highest grossing movie of all time, however when she got back to Warner Bros. she found that she was being cast in sub-par roles as punishment. At the time, actors didn’t have the clout that they have today. If an actor or actress turned down a role they would be given a suspension, which meant extra time would be added to their contract without any pay for that punishment time. Well she decided to buck the trend and turn down all of the bad roles, and started to do more work outside of the studio where she had some other hits like Hold Back the Dawn. When her contract was up, she was ready to leave Warner Bros. for brighter pastures but Mr. Warner called up all the suspension time and told her that the studio would own her contract for another 25 weeks due to suspension time for all of the roles that she turned down. At this point Olivia knew that if she caved she would get bad roles and no pay for that time but if she fought she had better win or her entire career would be over. She decided to fight. She filed a lawsuit in 1943 and won her legal fight and then went on to win the appeal. Ultimately her legal battle was turned into law that stated a contract could not be extended beyond its term without consent. This didn’t just help her to move on, but this

three year battle shifted the power that big studios of the era had enjoined for decades and gave the power to the celebrities and talent agents the way it is today in Hollywood. When asked about this lawsuit during a screen actors guild interview in 1994 she explained how she was more happy that the abuse of power was ended and especially happy that actors who had gone to fight in World War II would not have these suspension times added to their contracts, because believe it or not, the studios were suspending people that were defending our country in order to make some extra profits. Hollywood owes Olivia de Havilland a great debt of gratitude and I hope the big wigs like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp and all the other Hollywood A-listers that enjoy $100 million dollar paydays and the ability to cherry pick their roles understand that it was because of this woman’s actions that they have that right. I also hope they all had something nice to say or at least held a moment of silence out of respect for this Golden Age trailblazer. After the legal battle was over she went on to pursue her choice of roles at her choice of studios and went on to earn her first Oscar for the film To Each His Own. After this she had a number of cherry picked starring and co-starring roles including The Snake Pit and The Heiress, a film she won her second Oscar for Best Actress. This leads me to the sibling matters alluded to earlier. She had a famously strained relationship with her sister Joan Fontaine who was also an esteemed actress and a fellow Oscar winner. No one knows what the feud was truly about because they both took it to their grave, but even at award ceremonies they were unable to cordially give or accept any exchange of words to one another. At the 1947 Oscar win, backstage Ms. Fontaine was reported to try and congratulate her sister but she was brushed aside and blocked for the rest of the evening from having any contact with Olivia. The world may never know the truth about that. But something the world does know is that Olivia was the envy of every housewife on the planet, known to have dated some of the Golden Era’s most eligible bachelors. She was known to have the eye of Errol Flynn, she dated Howard Hughes, James Stewart and John Huston. From Actress to Activist to Playgirl Olivia de Havilland lived a life that was a true Hollywood Legend. Her death this July 2020 truly marks the end of an era. But remember legends never truly die, they just move aside for others to enter the spotlight. You made your mark on the world for 104 years but your memory will live on for eternity. Rest in peace Olivia. By Michael Devine u

Healthy Eating AT THE HEART OF THE MATTER by Fazia Khan Parmar

T RY   O U R M E N U Bon Appetite

i again my favorite RED INK foodies! I’m really excited to share with you this month’s recipe because it is some serious eye candy. It is definitely true that you eat with your eyes first and in this dish, presentation is everything. On my last cruise, one of the most amazing things was the daily fruit carvings. I also love the idea of using the whole fruit in presentations such as this fun pineapple bowl. It lets your guests know not only what flavors to expect and eliminates the need to wash the platter when the party is over. When choosing your pineapple make sure you find one that looks fresh and the skin looks plump and you can smell a bright pine scent. Enjoy this amazing recipe and stay

Naya Rivera tragically died on July 8th.

She had rented a pontoon boat on Lake Piru to take her 4 year old son out for a day of social distancing fun on the water. Her and her son went in for a swim but only her son made it out. After the pontoon rental was overdue by a few hours the rental company contacted authorities. Ventura County Sheriffs found the boat afloat with the 4 year old asleep on the deck. The little boy told police that he and his mother had gone in for a swim and that she helped him back on board but then she disappeared under the surface and never came back up. Naya was best known for her long time role as Santana Lopez on Glee, she was in nearly every episode of the show from start to finish for its entire 6 year run. This beautiful, bright, young actress was taken in the midst of her prime and way before her time. IT is said that a day on the water meant to create happy memories for her and her family led instead to the tragic reality that water safety is so important. Our hearts go out to Naya Rivera’s son and the rest of her family, friends and fans. You were taken far too soon and we only got to see the tip of the iceberg of your career, but what we saw was aptly named Glee and will forever make people smile. By Michael Devine u 25

my Devan is most recognized for the designer womenswear label, NAVEDA, which first made its debut during New York Fashion Week and subsequently, at London Fashion Week. having an MBA in marketing + financial management, 10+ year career, and a fashion design degree from acclaimed Parsons—The New School, her world is consumed by fashion + styling. she currently lives, owns + operates her company in Philadelphia, is a fashion merchandising professor, fashion writer, blogger + Youtube-er, and works as a personal + editorial stylist. design + style are her life. RED INK Magazine had the pleasure of interviewing Amy Devan.

REDINK: At what age did you realize that you wanted to get into fashion? AD: As a child, since I believe the age of 4, I was always drawn to the arts and all things creative. I actually wanted to be an architect during my growing up years and all the way through high school -- I was intrigued by the concept of building something from concept to tangible fruition, all with a customer's needs and wants in mind. When I started undergrad, I instead went the business route thinking it would give me a solid foundation for my career (regardless of field) and that if the creative world was meant for me, that passion would lead my path eventually. I studied Marketing and Financial Management in college, and then went straight through to my MBA at the age of 21 in the same field. From there, I enjoyed an almost decade long career in marketing/business development/PR (amongst varying industries, fashion being one). Though I loved my job, something was

Photo by Anthony Murray missing and it was time to follow my passion for the arts. Fashion (and particularly illustrating, designing and styling) were very strong interests of mine since childhood --- and when the stars aligned later in life, it was really a natural transition for me. Though not my childhood dream of architecture, fashion spoke so strongly to me as it allowed me to challenge myself creatively, express myself artfully, construct tangible products, and connect with consumers. And so, I left my prior career to study design at Parsons and create a future for myself in fashion. The rest is history! Continues....on page 29
