Colombian sounds such as Cumbia and Champeta along with Afro-Colombian rhythms, Mapale and Chande are integral to their sound, as are musical influences from Miami and the Caribbean islands including Reggae, Dancehall, Raggamufin, Dub, Hip-Hop, Rock and Funk; all of these influences have lead to a fusion that Kondrat has coined as "that island swing" "Grammy Nominated Locos Por Juana is a force to recon with, they have a seamless blend of rock and hiphop with Latin American rhythms and the Caribbean groove of reggae and ska...this combo is a match made in heaven"~RED INK Magazineu

R.I.P CHADWICK

BOSEMAN

ollywood and the world have lost another rising star this month. Chadwick Boseman, known for his iconic roles as Black Panther and Jackie Robinson, has lost his secret battle with Colon Cancer. The actor powered on through the illness and continued filming and doing public events up until several months ago. Boseman was 43. He is mourned by his family, and his enumerable fans. In this time of clashes between diverse cultures, he was an actor that portrayed a hero and created a bridge between communities on and off the stage. He was a charitable person that never said no to being a sponsor or celebrity guest at an event, especially if it was for the betterment of children. As a youth, he was chosen to to receive a tuition scholarship from Denzel Washington, who chose him without knowing him, and from that day forward he lived his life to Pay it Forward. He was a personal acquaintance of former President Barack Obama. @Barack Obama tweeted: “Chadwick came to the White House to work with kids when he was playing Jackie Robinson. You could tell right away that he was blessed. To be young, gifted, and Black; to use that power to give them heroes to look up to; to do it all while in pain – what a use of his years.” The iconic characters that he is most famous for were unique in that they were heroes to people regardless of ethnicity. Black Panther was a marvel hero that inspired African American communities with its portrayal of an incredible advanced African Society called Wakanda and its heroic leader and world hero the Black Panther. This hero inspired black youths to strive for greatness as much as it inspired white youths who admired the tech of the hero the same way they do Batman. Chadwick Boseman’s role of Jackie Robinson in “42” was equally iconic and inspirational. Playing to the dreams of all children who want to become professional athletes, but once again an extra inspiration to those of the black community because of Jackie Robinson being the first African American to be able to play in Major League Baseball. Chadwick Boseman, you were taken from this world entirely too soon, but you lived your life with pride and integrity, you inspired many people and will be remembered forever. The Black Panther rests….Wakanda Forever.~ By Michael Devine u

His current musical project began in the city of Bogotá, where he worked on his first album, IDA, which contains 14 songs. IDA has artistic contributions from important Venezuelan musicians, such as: Gustavo Casas, Ava Casas and Recordatorio, as well as the executive production of Rodrigo Gonsalves (Vinylversus, Arawato, Rodrigo Solo). His productions IDA and VUELTA have earned three (3) nominations for the Pepsi Music 2020 Awards. Also during the year 2020, he has promoted his short film HOEK’s DELTA in more than 70 festivals around the world, being recognized with several laurels. Jose has had the honor of participating in albums by artists such as Vinylversus, Recordatorio, Los Estadios del Alma and Ava Casas, among others. August 14, 2020, José Hoek released Cirrus, the second single in anticipation of Trémolo Park, his next album. After the warm reception of the previous single, Antenas y Palmeras, José Hoek presents Cirrus, one of the most representative tracks of the audiovisual concept that encompasses his next production, Trémolo Park. The song, written in April 2020, develops the hope of connecting with someone through the gesture of looking at the sky. "Cirrus is a quite varied track, which, through its sections, manages to change a feeling of nostalgia for one of hope." - the artist says. Cirrus has a video that was shot in Monterrey, Mexico, by a collective of audiovisual production companies under the direction of the Venezuelan filmmaker Luis Machín, as well as the executive production of Alberto Stangarone (Sunsplash, Todosantos)

and his agency Ochodias. During the first half of the year, José Hoek worked on his new album, Trémolo Park, which was recorded and performed entirely by the artist. Hoek emphasized the challenge of recording alone during quarantine times: “I had to perform all the elements on the album, including instruments such as bass and percussion, which are not usually in my day to day. A nice learning of patience and perseverance that this quarantine leaves me.” The album was mixed by Ricardo Martínez (Remoto Estudio, Caracas), who was his partner in the band Zaperoco Sound System and mastered by Dave McNair. The art direction of the album is in charge of Alberto Stangarone (Sunsplash, Todosantos) and his agency Ochodias. For its part, the album Trémolo Park will be published in the coming months, with a regional strategy designed by Criteria Entertainment from Los Angeles, California, as well as the distribution of Ditto Music u

DON ANDRE on Andre, a dancehall artiste from the United Kingdom . Born Carlos Robinson and grew up in a humble home in the small district called Thirty-five Lane close to Waltham Park Road in the busy city of Kingston, Jamaica. Fate forever changed his destiny, as his mother, Arlene Bryan suddenly died 2 months after his birth. Don Andre's Aunt, Gloria later took on the responsibility of raising him. During his teens, his strong passion for music was known in his household, as he would pen his first lyrics. "Auntie Gloria" (as he affectionately calls her) motivated Don Andre to strengthen his composition skills and influenced him to continue his studies to Tertiary level. ENJAMBRE ormed around the talents of brothers Luis and Rafael Navejas, Mexico Citybased retro-rockers Enjambre released their debut album, Consuelo en Domingo, in 2005. After achieving some regional success, the siblings added their youngest brother Julian to the mix, along with longtime friends Ángel Sánchez and Javier Mejía, and released 2008's El Segundo Es Felino, resulting in a record deal with EMI. The group's critically acclaimed major-label debut, Daltónico, followed in 2010. In 2012, the band issued their hotly anticipated fourth studio long-player, Huéspedes del Orbe, followed in 2015 by the Phil Vinall-produced Proaño. Imperfecto Extrano, the group's sixth fulllength release, dropped in 2017. The Mexican band presents their latest single: “EL DERRUMBE” a reflection on moments of crisis, the gaps left by people and how we can turn pain into a starting point for rebirth from the ashes. It is often said that crisis, in spite of putting us in check, can also become an opportunity to move forward, despite the fact that there is much pain or a deep-seated void. Under this premise, Enjambre presents "El Derrumbe", a new healing song, not only for its followers, but for all music lovers. This piece, which has the characteristic sound style of the band (a perfect amalgamation between the nostalgia of the seventies ballad and the innovative edge of indie rock), evokes melancholy and reflection, emotions that give perfect context to the lyrics, which their first words raises the issue of touching bottom, trying to move forward, but not being able to move given the melancholy that settles in the heart. The chorus, sung with an emotion that can be felt just under the surface, speaks directly to a phantom interlocutor: a person or feeling that is gone and that is missed with all the heart, because when it existed, it made us feel complete.

F

14

To round out its conceptualization, "El Derrumbe" is accompanied by a music video where we see the members of the band walking through a pantheon located in Mexico, which is not only an ode to one of our most recognized traditions around the world, but also the perfect setting for the nostalgia that caresses this composition, highlighted by a color palette that gives it an antique vibe, that is, of something that has gone and only survives in the memory. Thanks to all its virtues, "El Derrumbe" aims to become a new classic in the band's catalog, and at the same time it is a hopeful and healing song for all those who have a scar in their heart. The Imagen Awards was founded by legendary television producer Norman Lear, who was acutely aware of the near absence of positive portrayals of Latinos in the entertainment industry and understood the importance of positive images. Lear met with the leaders of the National Conference for Community and Justice (formerly the National Conference of Christians and Jews, or NCCJ), a respected non-sectarian human relations organization committed to fighting prejudice and racial tensions. Out of this meeting emerged the Imagen Awards, a competition which recognizes and encourages the entertainment industry to portray the Latino community in a positive and accurate manner. Often referred to as the Latino Golden Globes by the Hollywood community, the Imagen Awards attract key entertainment leaders as well as celebrities. Past honorees and attendees have included Lin-Manuel Miranda, Rita Moreno, Guillermo Del Toro, Salma Hayek, John Leguizamo, Martin Sheen, Roberto Orci, Gina Rodriguez, Jenni Rivera, and former CBS Entertainment Chairman, Nina Tassler, among others. Nominations Announced for the 35th Annual Imagen Awards LOS ANGELES (August 5, 2020) – The Imagen Foundation President Helen Hernandez announced 114 nominees in 20 categories for this year’s 35th Annual Imagen Awards. The award show has expanded by adding three new categories: Best Director in Television, Best Music Composition for

20

Film and Television, and Best Music Supervision for Film and Television. The Imagen Awards will be presented virtually Thursday, September 24th, at 5:00 PM. “This year’s list of nominees is a far cry from four honorees 35 years ago,” said Hernandez. “The level of creativity and talent in our community is bountiful and is exemplified in this year’s list. The judges were challenged with the overwhelming increase of quality submissions for consideration. It’s clear that we are making some strides, but have a way to go to achieve significant equity and inclusion in the industry. Until then, Imagen is committed to be the means to elevate and profile Latinx talent in front of and behind the camera. Congratulations to this year’s nominees.” With a 55% increase in entries from last year’s show, The Imagen Foundation continues to be the beacon in the recognition of Latinx talent like no other award show in Hollywood to date. The many years of continuous effort to spotlight and celebrate diversity in the entertainment industry has positioned the Foundation as a leader in distinguishing actors, studios, executives, and many more for their exceptional performances and achievements in film and television. The Imagen Awards nominees are determined by an independent panel of entertainment industry executives and Latino community leaders. Evette Rahman Orlando Baker Finishes 9th in $100,000 “Final Table” Cooking Challenge ORLANDO,

Fla.,–– Two-time World Dessert Champion Evette Rahman is returning home to Orlando after competing in the finale of the world’s largest Food Sport event. The “Final Table: Indy” culinary throwdown was held in Indianapolis in August and filmed for a special one-hour TV show that will be released in October on the Cooking Channel. The event was hosted by the World Food Championships (WFC), Visit Indy, Ivy Tech Culinary Center and Culinary Crossroads. It featured ten Category Champions who had earned a seat during WFC’s Main Event last fall in Dallas. Rahman completed the tournament with a 9th place finish. In the “Final Table: Indy” first round, Rahman and the other champions were tasked with making a Pork and Parisian Gnocchi dish using Red Gold Tomatoes and pork cuts sourced from the National Pork Board. She and her husband completed the dish on time and presented it to a panel of local pork experts Chef James Murray from the National Pork Board. The judging panel used WFC’s propriety judging system, the E.A.T.™ Methodology (which stands for Execution, Appearance and Taste) to score each dish. Rahman’s pork dish titled “Sweet & Sour Pork, Sesame Green Beans and Tomato Gnocchi Soup” missed the next round’s cut-off by only 5 points. Her dish scored 87 (out of 100) after the panel of judges’ scores were combined and formulated on key weightings. While she did not continue on to Challenge Two, she still earned a $500 bonus on top of her $10,000 category win at WFC’s 2019 Main Event in Dallas. Only five of the Category Champions continued on to Challenge Two, which involved creating a delicate duck dish designed by Chef Greg Hardesty and using Maple Leaf Farms’ product. From there, three finalists were awarded a spot in the last challenge, which involved a creative interpretation of the iconic Indiana Sugar Cream Pie. WFC kept fans updated on results throughout the weekend event, up until the final challenge in which all parties involved were required to sign non-disclosure agreements. The “Final Table: Indy” national TV show will air on the Cooking Channel on October 3, 2020. At that time, the new World Food Champion will be revealed during the show’s final sequence. Until then, stay up-to-date on all culinary competition news,

Healthy Eating AT THE HEART OF THE MATTER by Fazia Khan Parmar

i again my favorite RED INK foodies! Ok, I’m not trying to rush winter or anything with my soup recipe but I feel like we all might need a little vegetable infused nourishment as many places are still struggling with COVID-19. One thing that is consistently mentioned is that those with a strong immune system seem to lessen the virus severity. To this end, eating a healthful diet full of fresh fruits and veggies can’t hurt, right? Like many of my recipes that I showcase, this soup is very versatile and can work with a variety of vegetables and leafy greens that you like or have on hand. While it is not very traditional in minestrone soup, I sometimes like to substitute baby bok choy for the baby spinach. You can also play around with the beans or lentils of your choice for the fiber kick in this recipe. Strong digestive systems are also linked to improved immunity. Please try out this recipe the next time you are seeking a warm and comforting meal that is full of healthful benefits. Enjoy!

Instructions: Heat oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add onion to pan; sauté 3 minutes or until softened. Add oregano and garlic; sauté 1 minute. Stir in squash, zucchini, carrot, and corn; sauté 5 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Remove from heat. Place 3 cups tomato and 1 can broth in a blender; process until smooth. Add tomato mixture to pan; return pan to heat. Stir in remaining 1 cup tomato and remaining 2 cans broth; bring mixture to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer 20 minutes. Add pasta and beans to pan; cook 10 minutes or until pasta is tender, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. Stir in spinach, salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Ladle soup into individual bowls; top with cheese. Garnish with coarsely ground black pepper, if desired.

RED INK had the pleasure of interviewing the designer herself. Here’s what she had to say. REDINK: How would you describe your beginnings of becoming a Designer? KR: My beginnings was an eye opener. It all started after seeing my daughter in her first fashion show, so I said to myself what these designers are doing I can do myself and have my daughter model my own designs. REDINK: What has been the main things that makes your Collection International? KR: My European and African Prints along with its many styles sand eye poppin colors makes my clothing line desirable for everyone. It doesn't matter where you're from. rable Fashion Show or Photo Shoot? KR: My first fashion show is the most memorable fashion show. There was so much energy and nerves at the same time. I remember being so excited and the models coming up to my station hoping they can walk the runway wearing my clothing line. It felt awsome. That was a great experience.

REDINK: How long have you been in the Fashion Industry? KR: I’ve been designing for about three years now. I started shortly after attending my daughter's first fashion show. Continues....on page 29

KD Rose La Diva REDINK: What would you tell a upcoming Designer about the Industry ? KR: It's a very exciting and edgy industry where you have to stay focus, creative and continue to persevere. Success my not come overnight, but continue to work hard and joy will come in the morning. REDINK: What are the changes that you seen over the years? KR: In the industry you definitely will see changes in fashion trends. My design in particular I have seen a growth in consumers wearing African Print like never before ranging from African Outfits, Head Wraps and Accessories. REDINK: Where do you get your inspiration from when you start designing? KR: When I am creating a piece I am imagining how models would look on the Runways and on the Red Carpet. So yes I am inspired by people and their love for fashion and wanting to look their best. REDINK: WWhere do you see yourself in the next 5 years? KR: Five years from now I want to be overseeing my own thriving boutique ready to expand into a flagship clothing store. REDINK: If you didn’t start in Fashion, what was your backup plan, if you had one? KR: If I wasn't designer clothes I would be styling hair in my own hair salon, in which I had and done prior to what I am doing now. Venus is the ruler of your Sun sign and therefore a powerful planet for you this month. As the month begins she is located (April 20 - May 20) alongside Saturn in your third house. Riddle Solution:

You may find the first days of September 2019 a bit like slogging through mud that’s up to your hips. Pluto, the ruler (Oct 23 - Nov 21) of Scorpio, and Mercury have just switched from retrograde to direct motion.

The Moon in fiery Aries provides motivation at the beginning of the Capricorn month and pulls us out of the disorienting effects of Mercury, Chiron, (Dec 22 - Jan 19) Uranus and Neptune retrograde. A lot of energy can be focused on relationship opportunity.

2

Saturn’s transit of your sixth house has you focusing a lot these days on your goals and life direction. Even though the last (Jan 20 - Feb 18) few weeks have made things as clear as mud, don’t sweat it.
