articipants who spent hundreds of hours and sometimes thousands of dollars preparing for next week’s annual Cambridge Caribbean Carnival voiced frustration Friday that the threat of more gang violence prompted authorities to call off the festivities. “I’m really disappointed because we made a lot of preparations,” said Karen Sheperd, assistant manager of Rite Taste Jamaican Restaurant in Mattapan, one of the carnival’s scheduled vendors. “It’s normally good business. They’re punishing Cambridge for Boston’s problems.” Ulric Johnson of Tempo International Rhythm Section, a Dorchester steel band that was due to perform at the carnival, said police should have increased their presence at the event. In a statement on the festival’s website Friday, organizers said that based on the recommendation of Police Commissioner Branville G. Bard Jr., City Manager Louis A. DePasquale decided to cancel the Sept. 8 event. “For the past 26 years, the Cambridge Carnival has been an important cultural event for the City of Cambridge and the greater region,” the statement said. “However, there have been increasing safety concerns associated with this year’s event due in part to the gun violence that occurred last weekend in the immediate vicinity of Boston’s Caribbean Carnival Parade.” Two men were arrested on Aug. 24 after they exchanged gunfire in plain view of officers at Boston’s Caribbean parade, police said. “That is a major factor in the decision because these events are so close to one another and draw a similar audience,” said Jeremy Warnick, a Cambridge police spokesman.

VPRecords celebrates 40TH Anniversary Concert at Summerstage- New York Elephant Man, Junior Reid, Estelle and Raging Fyah Rocked Central Park ll five boroughs were represented at VP Records’ 40th anniversary concert at Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage. The 5,500-capacity crowd was treated to what is being called the best reggae concert of summer 2019, even generating a viral video of Elephant Man on popular blog The Shaderoom. “This event was about the fans who have supported VP Records through the years, purchasing and streaming the music. said company president Randy Chin. “Live shows are a vital link to Caribbean culture in the City and we’re very happy with the way this turned out.” The line-up for the event showcased the range and diversity of the label’s output over four decades. The Grammynominated Raging Fyah opened the show with their ‘roots rock’ influenced brand of reggae. R&B songstress Estelle followed with a spirited performance inspired by her recent Lovers Rock, release. She got the crowd into her act, inviting audience members to showcase their dance moves on stage and brought the house down, closing her set singing the smash hit, “American Boy.” Former Black Uhuru vocalist, Junior Reid, took the

THE CHIN FAMILY FOUNDERS OF VP RECORDS SummerStage audience to another level, running through a selection of reggae and Dancehall hits including his classic “One Blood.” Closing the show was VP veteran Elephant Man who demonstrated how he earned the moniker “Energy God,” with an up tempo dancehall set that pulled out all the stops. The energy among attendees was exuberant for this momentous occasion. The event was chronicled with a live painting by Japanese illustrator, Murasaki. With dynamic performances and the recently remodeled venue serving as his inspiration, the artist created a 5’ x 10’ sized canvas to commemorate the milestone event. The artwork will serve as inspiration for the upcoming VP Records compilation album, Strictly the Best Volume 60, slated for release November 22. Earlier this year, VP Records debuted a multi-media exhibit chronicling its sixty years in reggae music at Sangster International Airport in Jamaica. A condensed version of the exhibit was on display to educate concert goers on the origins of the company as Randy’s Record Mart in Kingston, Jamaica and the label’s vital role in the development of the reggae since its establishment in Jamaica, New York in the late 70’s. u VPRecords.com 9

long with Buju Banton and Sizzla, Capleton spearheaded dancehall’s return to reggae tradition, tackling Rastafarian spiritual themes and using classic roots reggae as a musical foundation. Capleton was born Clifton George Bailey III on April 13, 1967, in the rural town of Islington, in Jamaica’s St. Mary parish. Capleton’s namesake was a prominent local lawyer, and young Clifton earned that nickname as a verbally gifted youth with a similar talent for logical argument. He also loved music, counting both Bob Marley & the Wailers and dancehall DJ Papa San as early favorites, and sneaking into sound system shows at age 12. At 18, he moved to Kingston in hopes of starting a music career, and performed with several small sound systems before catching on with Stewart Brown’s African Star, a combination sound system and label with connections in both Jamaica and Toronto. Visiting the latter in 1989, Capleton shared a concert bill with the hugely popular Ninjaman, and impressed enough that he was offered the chance to record with major producer Philip “Fatis” Burrell upon his return to Jamaica. Capleton’s first single was the risqué “Bumbo Red,” which was banned from Jamaican radio for its sexually explicit lyrics, but became a huge word-of-mouth hit. He made a well-received appearance at the 1990 Reggae Sunsplash Festival, and issued a

10

series of popular — and often slack — singles for various producers, the biggest of which were “Number One Pon the Look Good Chart” and “Lotion Man.” The 1991 LP Capleton Gold gathered some of these early recordings, and he also appeared on several split albums, the most notable of which was 1992’s Double Trouble, shared with General Levy. By 1992, a distinct cultural consciousness was becoming apparent in Capleton’s work, starting with the landmark hit single “Alms House.” An album of the same name was issued in 1993, collecting further singles in the same vein like “Matie a Dead,” “Unnu No Hear,” and “Make Hay,” among others. During this era, Capleton was truly coming into his own; still recording prolifically in 1993, he scored several signature hits with “Everybody Needs Somebody,” “Cold Blooded Murderer,” and “Buggering.” Those tracks all appeared on the 1994 album Good So. By that point, Capleton’s conversion to Rastafarianism was complete and now dominated his music to a greater degree than ever before. His success also earned him a shot with an American major label, Def Jam, for which he debuted with the album Prophecy in 1995. Hip-hop remixes of “Tour” and “Wings in the Morning” (the latter of which featured a guest spot from Method Man) made Capleton a significant crossover success on the rap and dance singles charts, and Prophecy sold quite respectably in the U.S. Def Jam also issued the follow-up album, 1997’s I Testament, which continued in a similar vein: R&B accessibility fused with Rastafarian militancy. Capleton subsequently returned his focus to the Jamaican market, and although his music was now rootsier than ever, he began to temper his Rasta obsessions with more romantic lyrics. 1999’s One Mission gathered some of his work, but a better chronicle of his highly consistent output over 1999-2000 was More Fire, which contained all of his biggest hits of the period: the rootsy-sounding “Who Dem?,” the antiviolence anthem “Jah Jah City,” the female-positive “Good in Her Clothes.” 2002’s Still Blazin’ gathered much of his best work from the next two years. u VPRecords.com

BUNJI GARLIN

B

orn in Sangre Grande and raised in the Royal Chartered Borough of Arima, Trinidad, Ian Anthony Alvarez better known as Bunji Garlin, is a Trinidadian artist and international soca royalty. He is affectionately known as “de girls dem darlin” (although now married to Faye-Ann Lyons, a fellow performer) and also “fireman” for his famous chant of “Fire!” during his performances. Garlin says he got his stage name from the bungee cord, which is flexible and Garlin is a type of gun with powerful shots. In his own words: “…no matter what they send at me, I will always bounce back.” Both a composer and performer of soca and ragga soca, Garlin is a prolific lyricist who calls himself the Lyrics King, a title very few would dispute. Ragga is a blend of soca with dancehall music, a genre he adopted and made his own during his first years on the music scene. He also sings songs that blend soca with other genres such as reggae, R&B and chutney. As the leader of his band the Godfather’s Asylum, Garlin mentors and provides a nurturing environment for soca artists who are talented but have not found a way to break into the business. Garlin was educated at Arima Senior Comprehensive School, where he demonstrated his unique chanting skills whenever he had the opportunity. His debut in the music industry in 1998 came after Garlin made a name for himself performing at small venues and local events. He is the undisputed king of ragga soca, having won the “Ragga Soca Monarch” competition in both 2000 and 2001, the two years in which the competition was staged. Garlin won the Young King title in 2001, and captured the coveted title of International Soca Monarch in 2002, then reclaimed this title for three more years. Bunji Garlin performs both in his home country and abroad, where he spends the major part of the year after Carnival season ends in Trinidad. His performance reviews are usually glowing, as crowds always respond well to his high-energy performances, as well as his lyrical confidence and eloquence evidenced in his amazing ability to perform freestyle lyrics with an ease which most performers could only aspire to. Garlin has collaborated with many artists such as Iwer George, Denise Belfon, Shammi, Onika Bostick, Kerwin DuBois, Red Rat, Bounty Killer, Super Blue, Prophet Benjamin, Rita Jones, Ronnie Mcintosh, Fay-Ann Lyons, Shurwayne Winchester, Machel Montano, and Patrice Roberts. u VPRecords.com 14

F AY - A N N LY O N S

T

rinidadian-based singer and songwriter Fay Ann Lyons makes her VP Records debut with Break The World. The album is a cumulative body of work, one that brings together 15 years of original songwriting, versatile vocal range, and genre-defying production. The album features production work by the likes of Richie Beretta, Stadic Sound Productions, Keron “Sheriff Mumbles” Thomas, Dwain Antrobus, Kevin Marshall, and Draien Bailey. Break The World bridges Fay Ann’s roots in traditional soca music with the brand new songs that fuse diverse global sounds, all seamlessly brought together by Lyon’s songwriting throughout. The songs and sounds of the album hop across continents and genres as it unfolds. Opening the album is the title track, “Break The World,” a pop-leaning, girl power anthem over infectious synths. Ghana meets Trinidad on “Block De Road,” the Afro-Soca jam which features guest vocals from Stonebwoy. “Raze” starts out with delicate vocals over buzzing synths, and gives way to pulsing Caribbean drum rhythms. On “Catch Me,” Fay Ann fuses Electronic Dance Music and Soca at a neck-breaking pace. Fay Ann dabbles in Chutney Soca, Trinidad’s very own melange of Soca and Indian music, on “Din Ta Da.” Break The World also charts Fay Ann’s origins in soca music by bringing back classic songs like “All Over” from 2012, and “Heavy T Bumpa,” Fay Ann’s Groovy Soca Monarch and Carnival Road March Winning from 2009. Born November 5th, 1980 in the town of Point Fortin, Trinidad, Fay Ann is the second generation of a Caribbean music dynasty. She was born to Lynette Steele and Austin Lyons, better known by their stage names “Lady Gypsy” and “Superblue,” respectively. Raised primarily by her mother, Fay Ann was immersed in the island’s musical scene from an early age. She spent many nights hanging out backstage at the Calypso tents during the annual Carnival season, and was often babysat by other artists while her mother performed. Superblue, a seven-time winning Soca Monarch, was often the featured artist at concerts during the pre-Lenten festival of music, culture and reverie. Carnival proved to be the time of year that Fay Ann saw her father the most. It was his energetic “jump-and-wave style performances that had the strongest influence on Fay Ann, and ultimately influenced her decision to join the soca music industry. At the age of 21, Fay Ann made her first foray into music as the front woman of the band Invazion. From the very beginning of her career, Fay Ann always sought to carve out her own lane with attention-grabbing hits like “It’s My Turn Now” and “Focus.” Fay Ann quickly began to realize her

capabilities as more than a singer, and in 2003 she wrote “Display.” Fay Ann won the first of her many Carnival Road March titles for “Display.” As well, she received accolades as the New Songwriter and Female Songwriter of 2003 from the Copyright Organization of Trinidad and Tobago. Following her breakthrough year in 2003, Fay Ann returned to Trinidad’s annual Carnival competitions scene for back-toback years in 2008 and 2009. The latter year proved to be a record breaking one for Fay Ann. Riding the dual waves of the Groovy and Power hits “Heavy T Bumpa” and “Meet Superblue,” Fay Ann—at 9-months pregnant—performed in both competitions and won. This was the first and only time that a female cinched the Groovy Soca Monarch, Power Soca Monarch, as well as the People’s Choice Award. “Being pregnant, gaining weight and going on stage and performing was a testament to the fact that ppl like to listen to me as much as they like to look at me, says Fay Ann. “My performances weren’t as hyped as I would’ve had before. I was able to get the same response from the crowd by just using my voice than just my body. True fans are worth all of the accolades you give them.” Fay Ann and her husband Antonio Alvarez, a frequent collaborator and fellow Soca artist who performs under the name Bunji Garlin, welcomed their daughter, Syri, one week after Fay Ann’s landmark win. After winning five Carnival Road March and Soca Monarch titles, and numerous songwriting accolades, Fay Ann is finally ready to release her first full-length EP. Fay Ann considers the album a sort of forward thinking retrospective. “I decided to mix Break The World with songs from the past, present and future,” says Fay Ann. “There’s no vibe that I wanted to convey. Because I write every single thing that I sing, it was just a matter of picking what vibe I was in in that moment, and bringing them all together. It’s all Fay Ann.” While Fay Ann has been a household name in the Caribbean music market, she is ready to make her mark on the world scale. Break The World—with its globe-trotting sound—is just the album to take her there. u VPRecords.com 15

In Memory of Buck 1 -Gone too SoonCharly Black Associate Dancehall Artiste Buck 1 Shot Dead at age 29 Dancehall deejay Buck 1 of Charly Black‘s Team Unstoppable was shot and killed in Parry Town, Ocho Rios on Aug. 26, 2019. The story is still developing, but it seems 2 men were shot and killed during the incident. The other man has been identified as 35-year-old Kemar Thomas, also of Parry Town. Police believe that it might have been a case of mistaken identity or simply him being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Ochi Rios Police are currently investigating the shooting as a homicide. Buck 1, whose real name is Lancelot White, launched on to the scene as a contestant in the Magnum Kings and Queens Competition back in 2013, since then he has been well respected artist with a loyal following. One of Buck 1’s wellknown songs is his collaboration with Charly Black on “Attention Seeker” for Troyton’s Dancehall Bully rhythm. Just recently Buck 1 was promoting his new single, “Rise We A Rise.” There has been a significant outpouring of support for the late 29 year old from associates, friends and fans. Emcee Tamba from the Charly Black-led Team Unstoppable stated that Buck 1 was a good person. Tamba released a voice note to the public and said, “is a good youth to me, a mi team member right now mi a talk mi Inna tears a mi team member. Me and him never have nothing mi Neva see Buck 1 and nobody Inna argument, never see anybody and him Inna the community Inna argument. Mi Nuh know him as no bad person, Neva even see Buck 1 with a knife.” Tamba can be heard crying in the voice note which simply ends with, “right now the morning ya Nuh good.” It is quite apparent that The Team Unstoppable is in a state of shock and disbelief over the loss of their fellow member. A quick visit to the instagram @unstoppable_tamba will show a few tribute video posts made in memoriam to Buck 1. “Rise We a Rise” is very uplifting and empowering song. It has been picking up momentum and currently has three and half thousand views on Team Unstoppables’ YouTube page. The track was produced by Multi-talented Music and the video directed by Dameon Gayle for Warrior Musick Productions. Buck 1 is an artist who will be remembered and missed dearly. We at RED INK Magazine pass our deepest condolences on to the family, friends and fans of this young artist who was taken too soon.u 21

Swing into summer AT THE HEART OF THE MATTER by Fazia Khan Parmar

ou all know it’s the Fall season when all of the pumpkin spice flavored items of our favorite foods come out. There is definitely something heart warming about the warm spice flavors that compliments the crisper air and turning leaves. However, don’t let the spice outshine the good ol’ pumpkin that is packed with vitamin A and C. Even its humble seeds can be roasted into a satisfying snack. However, watch out for the added fat and calories that some of our fall favorite delights can bring. For example an iced café latte from Starbucks is 130 calories while an iced pumpkin spice latte is 250 c a l o r i e s . Fall is also a time to find and buy in-season veggies such as beets, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, eggplant, kale and pumpkin. These harder veggies are ideal candidates for soups, stews, and pan roasting. These preparations impart a soul satisfying flavor profile by concentrating the ingredients and bringing out the natural sweetness of the veggies. Roasting adds a gentle caramelization of the vegetables while allowing more of the nutrients to be retained. Lastly don’t forget to hydrate! Some of the drier and brisker weather can dry out your skin and hair. Keep that fresh and vibrant look by making sure your body has adequate water balance. It’s always a good think to keep a water bottle around areas where you spend the most time like your desk at work, bedside table, or couch. Don’t let the cooler weather and shorter hours of daylight ruin your heath routine. Embrace all that the cooler months have to offer. Until next month, stay healthy and enjoy this month’s recipe!

STYLE

- Get the scoop on fashion, see what’s in & what’s not. Are you in?

Meet Eustace Collens Jr. He is a Sag-AFTRA actor and a publish model. He started modeling when he was in J.H.S. thru out his years of college. Back then there was no social media for him to advance his career, it was word of mouth in the streets. People would talk about him and several up and coming underground models in the beauty parlors, barber shops, car wash and social gatherings. he made a name for himself but had to face reality and leave the industry to make real money, he became a responsible adult, raised a family and paid the bills. After a long hiatus he decided to re-enter the world of modeling at the age of 54 years young. When it comes to the runways, fashion industry, and men's magazine there is an untraceable presence of male models over a certain age and size because the fashion industry tends to cater to younger men. He felt that older men models and big and tall men were not being represented in the industry, so he started a movement in his area and social media to bring awareness to designers, magazines, promoters and advertising agencies to let them know that they are marketable and relevant in the fashion industry. Eustace is now signed with two agencies and is a Brand Ambassador for the Miguel Wilson Collection the number one Menswear in Atlanta. He is now being flown to different states to model for different designers to be in their fashion shows. Several videos of me walking in shows have gone viral, they have even gotten the attention of Gospel great BeBe Winans who saw one of my videos and said he taught that was him modeling and even post it

on his Instagram page to trick his fans. Eustace is making a little noise in the industry and now being noticed and is in demand by different designers to wear their clothing line. they see that I just don't wear the clothes, I help sell them. This only shows that there is a market for older models. FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS AND LET NO ONE PUT YOU IN A BOX. Follow me on Instagram @collensjr. facebook Eustace Collens Jr u By Linda Cocochynna Ford
