The King of Dancehall, Daddy U-Roy, Officially Crowned
D
addy U-Roy is one of the most well respected members of the Reggae and Dancehall community. He has been touted as the inspiration for so many stars of the industry. In an interview earlier this year with Red Ink Magazine, after performing in Miami, Shabba Ranks was quoted as naming Daddy U-Roy as the prime inspiration for his music career. That sentiment was immortalized on November 29th at the 10th anniversary of Reeewind in Queens, New York, when Shabba Ranks Delivered an actual crown to Daddy U-Roy, to officially endow him with the title “King of Dancehall.” This is just one more incredible title to add to his many others, including “The Originator,” “The Teacher,” and of course “the Godfather.” Now he is “The King.” There were many industry greats present at the event, including Shabba Ranks, Professor Nuts, Bushman, Rory Stone, King Stur Gav. And many others not present at the show, have since paid their respect, and announced their support of the title of the undisputed King of Dancehall and King of all Deejays. Chronixx, Spragga Benz, Beenie Man, and Jesse Royal are just a few that took to social media to support the declaration. But it seems that none would have a more incredible reaction to the ceremony than the presenter of the crown himself, Shabba Ranks. He had this incredible message to Daddy U-Roy, “You are the Godfather of music, The Father who set it. You are wi aspiration and inspiration and the greatest DJ of all time! We will never, ever, ever see or have another man to represent the music like you Daddy U-Roy. All I can say to God is to give you long life. I love you more than the music and salute you with life and the breath I have. God Bless you for being the foundation and letting music be the foundation in I&I criteria. U-Roy is the Picasso of our music and when he was creating that portrait, Shabba is there inna it. Salute!” These are heart felt words that will live with U-Roy for the rest of his life. Well said, Shabba, well said. Daddy U-Roy , was born Ewart Beckford, and hails from Jones Town, Saint Andrews Parish, Kingston, Jamaica. He has been performing for 58 years. The path started when he was a DJ for Dickie Wong’s sound system in 1961. From there his music and toasting style carried him far. In 1970 He was overheard toasting over a Duke Reid track at a dance, by singer John Holt. Holt raved to Reid about this relatively unknown talent, and Duke Reid asked to meet Ewart Beckford. That meeting led to the first two singles, “Wake the Town” and “Wear You to The Ball’ Both of these songs became instant hits in Jamaica, and established the beginning of the reputation for Beckford, Daddy U-Roy, to be known as one of the most popular toasters in Jamaica and later the world.
Fun Fact, the stage name U-Roy came from one of the younger family members being unable to pronounce the name Ewart, so (yoo-wurt) became U-Roy. Daddy U-Roy’s stardom continued to grow, and in 1978 he started his own sound system which he named Stur Gav after his sons. This sound system launched the careers of many great talents, including Ranking Joe, Charlie Chaplin and Josey Wales. But this new platform did not put a damper on U-Roy’s personal career, it catapulted it. He went on to produce many worldwide hits, and as his name grew, so did the world stage on which he performed. Daddy U-Roy was featured on the album True Love by Toots and the Maytals, which won the Grammy for best Reggae Album in 2004, and featured many non-reggae stars, including Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, Gwen Stefani, and many others. In 2007 Daddy U-Roy, Ewart Beckford, was awarded the highest award by the Jamaican government and given the Order of Distinction, for his contribution to music. With all of this, and a career that has yet to slow down, “King of Dancehall, Daddy U-Roy,” still remains humble. At his crowning ceremony, he was taken back by the outcry of support and respect. He was quoted, “I have to say, I have been in the industry for 58 years and just turned 78 a couple of months ago. I can’t even believe and know there is so much love and respect out there for me. People, I have to thank you and respect you because you respect me to the max.” King Daddy U-Roy, you are living legend and will be loved by generations to come. Much Respect. by Michael Devine u 4

once Carnival is a week-long celebration in the city of Ponce, that takes place the week before Ash Wednesday. The event is similar to Mardi Gras or Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. The vibrant Ponce Carnival dates back to 1858. Its biggest highlight is the mock funeral and the Burial of the Sardine. There is also an iconic parade of Vejigantes—characters wearing costumes and scary demon-like papiermâché masks. The symbols of the Ponce Carnival are Vejigantes, originating in centuries-old Caribbean, African, and Spanish customs and believes. They are named after "vejiga" ("bladder" in Spanish) because the demons are beating evil spirits away with the help of an inflated cow bladder. Beware that vejigantes often go after people on the streets, especially young women and children. Most of the carnival events occur in the historic downtown of Ponce, at the Plaza Las Delicias and the Casa Alcalde. Various parades and processions take place every day. The first one is the Parade of the Carnival King on Friday afternoon. The carnival closes with a Burial of the Sardine on Fat Tuesday night. There are also street parties everywhere with dancing, singing, and live music concerts. Ponce Carnival is Puerto Rico's biggest fiesta so visitors can expect huge crowds, loud music, and lots of drinking. Feb 21 – 25, 2020 Ponce, Puerto Rico

The Reggae Ambassadors
T
hird World has been on the scene for 45 years, making them one of the longest lived Reggae Bands in history. Their unique blend of crossover music, blending genres of R&B, Funk, Pop, Rock, Dancehall, Rap, and of course their roots, Reggae, has made Third World one of the most well received Reggae groups on the international landscape. Their ability to seamlessly meld all of the different music styles in to something that everyone can enjoy is how they earned the title, The Reggae Ambassadors. Some of the legendary hits worthy of mention “Now That We Found Love,” “Try Jah Love,” “96 Degrees in the Shade,” “Feel a Little Better,” and “Forbidden Love.” Over the last 45 years, of course some members changed, due to changes in situation, life, and careers, however two members have been constant from the start. Co-founders of the group Stephen “Cat” Coore (Guitarist, Cellist, and vocalist) and Richard “Bassie” Daley (Bassist) have been the constant pillars of the group since inception. Throughout the years, one thing remained the same, the music and the sound that has earned them 9 Grammy Nominations, 6 for Best Reggae Album. One of those nominations is current for the 2020 Grammys airing on January 26th. Third World is nominated for Best Reggae Album for the new album More Work To Be Done which was a collaboration with and produced by long time family friend Damian Marley. Best of luck to this incredible group, a win would be well deserved. The collaboration with Damian was a long time coming. “Cat” Coore has been a long time friend of the Marley family. Some of Damian’s earliest memories are of Stephen and his dad hanging out and singing in his house and yard. Third World’s first big performances and their International debut was as an opening act for Bob Marley. So close were the families, that Stephen’s son Shiah grew up as best friends with Damian and is even the Bassist in Damian Marley’s own band. So the collaboration on More Work To Be Done was just the start and much more united work is planned for the future. Damian Marley is a four time Grammy Winner and Third World is a 9 Time Grammy Nominee. These superstars when asked about the collaboration, basically agree that the blend is like a match made in heaven. Taking the well known internationally loved sound of Third World, and blending it with lyrics and styling of Damian Marley, which appeals to the younger generation of listeners has in a sense revitalized Third World, and set them up to be around for another 45 years, in some way or another. Another way that Damian set the stage for Third World to reach a larger demographic is with other individual song collaborations and feature artists,
8
from the current charts, people like Chronixx, Busy Signal, Tessanne Chin (The Voice season 5 winner) and Pressure Busspipe have all collaborated on songs within the album. The album is incredible and more than worthy to win the Grammy they are nominated for this year, and shows just how well this long time relationship of families and musicians can work together to create something magical. Red Ink Magazine had the distinct pleasure of having a one on one interview with Third World band leader Stephen “Cat” Coore. Here is that interview… Red Ink: The name of your new album “More Work To Be Done” is the title of the album a hint of more things to come, related to you and the band just pushing hard and planning to bring out a lot more music or is it more of a political statement being that you come from a very political family? CC: “It’s both, really. We feel that there is more work to be done, particularly due to the fact that we are working with Damian Marley and that has been so successful that we would really like to do more work together with him and he is already pressing us to start working on new stuff.” “It has a Dual meaning, it is a double sharpened machete, because there is always room for improvement politically.” Continues on page 10…

Continued from page 8…Interview with Stephen ‘Cat’ Coore Red Ink: So you are up for your 9th Grammy nomination and 6th time for Best Reggae Album, how do you feel going in this time versus the competition? CC: “Well, you see the competition is all our close friends and all our very close allies, so I’m not so competitive in the long run. What I am is very humbled and very joyed by the fact that we were nominated and by the fact that we were nominated with such a good pack of nominees. So I am more looking at it from that angle, but clearly anyone who wins that category will be over the moon.” Red Ink: We already spoke about your Grammy nominated album, “More Work To Be Done” are there any other new albums or singles being worked on? CC: “As far as a new album, we have already started to work with Damian again, but I don’t want to say too much because we are all a team and I don’t know exactly where we are going yet. As for singles, the newest one is “You’re Not The Only One” Featuring Damian Marley, and the other single is “Loving you is Easy.” Another song that is getting a lot of attention is the one with Chronixx “Na, Na, Na.” Red Ink: You have performed all over the world for 45 years, do you have a favorite venue or a favorite country to perform in? CC: “I would say Red Rocks in Colorado and also the Hollywood Bowl are really great places to play. I wouldn’t say that I have a favorite country but I must say I am very partial to the Caribbean.“ 10
Red Ink: With regards to the message to your fans, do feel that their response has changed over the years when you do live shows or is it the same, you have been doing this a long time and the fans have changed over time? CC: “Well the community just wants you to communicate with them, and I feel this new record really communicates our message well to them. And Damian has really been a really key element in that because he is such a good communicator and he has brought that to us. We have a really great producer and not just producer but he is responsible for writing much of the material.” Red Ink: So do you think the fan response has improved and gone back to the way it was now that you have started working with Damian? CC:“Yes, I believe so.” Red Ink: You are doing some great stuff with Damian Marley right now, and just completed that album. If you had unlimited options and you could work with anyone from any genre of music, what would be your dream collaboration? CC: “I would love to do another collaboration with Stevie Wonder, I would love for him to produce another song for us and my favorite person to tour with was Carlos Santana, because he brought us out with him every night to do a reggae song during his sets, I don’t think I ever had so much fun in my career. Playing with him every night was very special to me, very special.” This concludes our interview. It was an absolute honor. Thank you Sir. by Michael Devine u

ROSARIO DRAGO
R
osario Drago is an Italian-American singer from
New York, who spent most of his childhood in Italy.
After graduating high school in 1994,
Rosario developed a passion for dance music, becoming a DJ before turning his talents to song-
writing. With an interest in Italian, Neopolitan, American and Latin dance music, Rosario released hit singles "Voglio a te" and "Baila Morena" in 2018 and 2019 respectively. Signed to SEAMUSICA in Italy and Iron Wings Productions of New York in the US, Rosario's latest single "El Bombonazo" is set to be an international hit. Rosario said: "I've always loved music, but in 1997 I took professional lessons so that I could become a Disc Jockey. With this under my belt, I began working in night clubs and local bars, which was originally just a hobby but eventually led me into the entertainment industry. However, it has not always been plain sailing for Rosario, who had to take a step back from the music world in 2011 due to health issues. Over the next six years, he began writing songs and developing his vocal talent, focusing his writing primarily on Italian, Neopolitan, American, and Latin dance music. After penning the singles "Voglio a te" and "Baila Morena", Rosario was signed up by Italian record label SEAMUSICA in 2018, followed by film and music company Iron Wings Productions of New York in 2019. Both "Voglio a te" and "Baila Morena" have received airtime on iHeartRadio, and today Rosario continues to write dance music. RED INK Magazine had the pleaseure of interviewing Rosario Drago. Red Ink: Who or what influenced you to get into music? RD: I fell in love with the way music brings people together. During my days as a DJ, my favorite part was seeing the crowd simply having a great time. To help people enjoy themselves and make memories always put a smile on my face. It wasn’t until recently that I realized my own creative abilities. My first song ‘Baila Morena’ being a success gave me the confidence and drive to produce more. Next was ‘El Bombonazo’ which made it on the radio and just .. wow .. the rush! I’ve been working hard on a full album that is really going to be something special. Red Ink: Do you write your own music? RD:Yes I do. This is something I am especially proud of .. all of the music I release to my fans is original. Red Ink: If given the chance to do a collaboration with someone, who would you choose to do it with? RD: Anyone who knows what it means to be a true artist .. I’m definitely hoping to do a lot of collaborations this upcoming year. If I had to pick someone it would be pitbull, I think we’d make an amazing party anthem together. Red Ink: What can fans expect from you in the coming new year? RD: A lot more music! We have some amazing projects in the works. My goal is to give people fun music they can listen to anytime, anywhere. All I can say is 2020 is looking to be one endless party! Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce crowned the fastest woman in the world The name Usain Bolt is well known as the fastest man alive. And everyone knows he hails from Jamaica. But there is another speedster hailing from Jamrock. The fastest woman alive, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. She just dominated in the Recent World Championships in Doha, Qatar, taking the Gold in both events she competed in. She also holds two Olympic Gold medals and over a dozen World Game Gold medals, throughout her incredible and consistent athletic career. And just a side note, this woman is not just an athlete with an incredible record, she is also a family woman, whom just two years ago gave birth to her son Zyon. So for anyone out there needing some additional motivation to keep their New Year resolutions, look no further than this incredible woman. She is raising a toddler and still found time to train and win multiple Gold medals.
Shelly has been winning Gold medals on the competitive stage since 2002, including two Olympic Gold Medals. And her recent World Championship Gold medals from Doha come with an added caveat. Just how fast is the Fastest woman alive? Well…. The silver medalist from Britain, Dina Asher Smith came in second to Shelly, and that second place finish was a British world record time, and yet, it still was not fast enough to best Shelly-Ann FraserPryce. I don’t know what is in the water in Jamaica, but they need to bottle that stuff and give Gatorade a run for their money. Congratulations to Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Jamaica and the world’s fastest woman, on another fantastic World Level competition, may your future hold many more gold medals. by Michael Devine u

Healthy Eating AT THE HEART OF THE MATTER by Fazia Khan Parmar
H
T RY O U R M E N U Bon Appetite
appy New Year my foodie fans! I would like to wish you all a wonderful and prosperous year with much happiness and success. This month I would like to present two recipes that will wrap you in cozy comfort as you warm your feet by the fire. Enjoy!
Instructions: If you have time, sprinkle the short ribs with salt several hours ahead of time and let it sit in the refrigerator. This will ensure that the salt gets all the way to the center of the meat. If you don’t have time, just salt the meat before searing. Heat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Heat the bacon fat or vegetable oil over high heat in a large dutch oven or other heavy, oven-safe pot. Dry the short ribs well with paper towels and sear the meat on every side in the hot pan. Make sure to get a good, dark brown sear all over the short ribs. Remove the meat to a plate and lower the heat to low. Add the shallots, carrots, and garlic, along with a healthy pinch of salt, to the pot. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes, or until the shallots are translucent. Turn the heat back up to high and add the wine. Scrape up any browned bits at the bottom of the pot, then add the meat back to the pot, along with the bay leaves, rosemary, and thyme. Pour in the soy sauce and as much beef broth as necessary to just cover the short ribs. Put the lid on, bring to a boil on the stove, then carefully move the pot and its contents to the heated oven. Cook in the oven for 3-5 hours, adjusting the heat as necessary to maintain a steady simmer. The meat is ready when it falls off the bone. If you poke a fork into a piece of meat and try to pick it up, it should fall apart. Set a colander over a large bowl and pour the contents of the pot into the colander. Shake the colander a bit to release the last of the liquid, but do not press down on the contents. Set the colander and its contents aside (or refrigerate in an airtight container) while you reduce the sauce. Either chill the braising liquid or let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour, until the fat rises to the surface. Skim off as much fat as you can with a large spoon. If you have time, you can refrigerate the braising liquid overnight and remove the solidified fat in the morning. Once a majority of the fat has been removed from the braising liquid, return it to the pot and set it over medium-high heat. Boil the liquid until it reduced from a broth-like consistency to a thin sauce-like consistency. You should end up with 1 1/2-2 cups of sauce. Lower the heat to medium and add the meat and other contents of the colander to the pot with the sauce to warm up. Serve the ribs hot with some sauce ladled over with a starchy side of your choice, sprinkled with chives.
RECIPE: Braised short ribs Ingredients:
4 large, meaty short ribs (about 2 pounds) 2 tablespoons rendered bacon fat or vegetable oil 1 large shallot or 2 small shallots, minced 2 carrots, finely diced 2-3 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed 1/4 cup soy sauce 2 cups red wine 2 cups beef broth 2 bay leaves 2 2-inch sprigs rosemary 4 2-inch sprigs thyme salt and pepper to taste chives for garnish

- Get the scoop on fashion, see what’s in & what’s not. Are you in?
www.chicdezignz.com Among the many things that define a woman is her strength, yet this attribute is also one of the most understood qualities of any woman because outsiders are unable to neither see nor understand the hardship that created such a strong warrior. Historically, warriors have always been considered a brave or experienced soldier or fighter. The term maybe predated centuries ago however the essence of female warriors lives on currently. Suzanne “Sue” Nelson is a modern day warrior. My strength is a result of many conquered battles throughout her life; none more strenuous and challenging than her battle with breast cancer. Typically battles are fought between two opposing parties. However, when battling cancer the battle is against yourself. The sneak attack was subtle and disarming initially. While playing with my children I experienced a discomfort, the battle was starting. I had discovered a lump which then prompted me to make an appointment with my physician. Even after the professional examination my doctor did not believe the lump to be cancerous simply because a mammogram was performed several months prior. Despite the disbelief from both parties - the reality of the battle could not have been avoided. I had cancer. The battle had started. One of the main sources of strength during this process
was my religious faith. Amongst the many things I did once receiving the news was solicit prayers. The warrior within me needed to be awakened in order to fight this battle. Naturally, life experiences train you to be tough. However, the level of this fortitude isn’t necessarily actualized until you are put into a flight or fight situation. Breast cancer is definitely one of those situations. Amongst all of eureka effects of the experience was the understanding and awakening of the warrior within me and how strong I could really be. My recommendation to any breast cancer warrior would be to gain a support group of warriors fighting the same battle as you. In addition to that, don’t attempt to fight this battle blind. The more knowledge that you equip yourself with the more prepared for battle you will be. Finally, accept the situation and work to improve it. Hiding from a battle when it is in your front yard won’t help you win but most definitely help you lose. In an effort to confront the battle abruptly I made the decision to have a double mastectomy even being a stage one warrior with no evidence of spreading. Each warrior must make the decision that is best for them and their battle. I want all those battling breast cancer to know there is light at the end of the tunnel. Through faith and support I was able to come out of the tunnel victorious. I am a woman, I am a testimony, I am a survivor, I am a warrior. u By Linda Cocochynna Ford
